Crowdfunding transforms the rapidness of relief efforts to Oklahoma Anyone with an Internet connection can now easily create a fundraising campaign through sites such as Facebook, Fundly, and Twitter. Fundly is a Mountain View-based company that specializes in being a platform for others to crowdfund through their social networks and family. This has been a big help in getting nearly instant funds for the relief aid in lieu of the Oklahoma tornado that has caused extensive damage. One piece of advice for those wanting to donate is to make sure they are supporting legitimate charity campaigns. WAR MUST END; TRANSITION Disneyland ahora más mágico TO WORLD PEACE

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

An unusual unexpected proposal was made by President Obama last week. “it is time to end this war on terrorism which cannot go on forever into the future.” This statement came after the President clearly said that America cannot abandon the people of the MidEast. Nonetheless, with the planned drawdown of American military forces scheduled to be accomplished by 2014, the President, as America’s Commander in Chief (CIC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), saw fit to tell the nation that it was time to plan ahead for a time when this nation would not be ‘at war’. The current special authority to commit American military forces, which was approved by the U.S. Congress back in 2001, would no longer be necessary. Therefore it is time to think about the future ‘war-powers’ of the CIC/CEO. This is the same war-power authority used by former President G. W. Bush to go to war against terrorism, supported by the U.S. Congress. In the entire history of America, President Obama is the first CIC/CEO to ask the nation and the U.S. Congress to consider the modification of his existing war-powers. This request was entirely misunderstood by Congress’s leaders who tend to resolve international issues with the use of American military power. It was President Theodore Roosevelt who said, “Speak softly but carry a big stick.” There was no suggestion that current plans for American military forces and their

deployment would change. The recent Pentagon budget cuts did not reduce effective military power, because what was curtailed was the continued development of weapons systems which are not useful against today’s international terrorism. Predictably, Republican leaders immediately took issue with this call to redefine the future authority and responsibility of the CIC. The U.S. Constitution grants the authority to go to war to the U.S. Congress. Today it is possible for an American CIC/CEO to go to war first and then ask Congress to support whatever was undertaken. The redefinition will very likely downsize what is now authorized. Now why would certain leaders react the way they did? Certain state economies contain a very large number of Pentagon contracts for goods and services. Elected officials are involved who support the current ‘militaryindustrial complex’ about which President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned America (January 17, 1961). These state economies would not be as robust as they are today should the ‘war on terrorism’ come to an end. The conduct of any war effort is very wasteful of resources which could be used to improve the global human condition. If our leaders are concerned about their current local economies, they must study Public Law 472, THE MARSHALL PLAN. As the war-torn nations of Europe faced famine and economic crisis in the wake of World War II, the United States proposed to rebuild in the interest of political stability and a healthy world economy. On June 5, 1947, in a commencement address at Harvard University, Secretary of State George C. Marshall first called for American assistance in restoring the economic infrastructure

of Europe. Western Europe responded favorably, and the Truman administration proposed the legislation. The resulting Economic Cooperation Act of 1948 restored European agricultural and industrial productivity, prevented famine and political chaos, and earned General Marshall a Nobel Peace Prize. Let America become the ‘ENABLER OF WORLD WIDE PEACE’ by pledging assistance to under-developed nations for whom the U.S.A. will underwrite the establishment of needed infrastructural systems. The building of school buildings, research laboratories, airports, roads, bridges, harbors, dams, electrical, communications and potable water delivery systems throughout the world will require an enomous logistical and manufacturing effort ,which will put almost everyone to work, both here and abroad. Those who oppose this effort will be predictable. It is those who currently have power, influence and are fearful of change. However, change we must, because if we do not agree to change, despite our fears and anxieties, we will stay locked in the present predicaments. The nature of war has changed. Today we have ideological conflicts, not wars between groups. For 12 years America has been fighting an ideological conflict with military might. It is time to end this traditional war on terrorism and initiate transitions using global police forces defined by diplomatic agreements, effective intellignece information, and international support. Perhaps the strong desire and hope for World Peace will enable effective actions against poverty, human trafficing, substance abuse, and violence in all its forms throughout the world. All economies and societies could benefit.

Si nunca has estado en Disneyland probablemente no eres californiano. No te arrepentirás.

Teresa Alvarado deserves support As someone who has known Teresa for many years, I am excited to see her running to fill the District 2 seat on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Teresa has a lifetime of experience in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. She has followed on the footsteps of her mother, Blanca Alvarado, as a community leader. That’s why, when I

Funding for Library Services Due to Expire Library Joint Powers Authority of Santa Clara County Places Continuation Measure on August 2013 Ballot to Maintain Existing Library Services

Santa Clara County CALIFORNIA On Tuesday May 28th, Joint Powers Authority Board (JPA) of the Santa Clara County Library District unanimously approved placing a special tax measure on an August 2013 mailed ballot that would continue existing library funding at current rates to help maintain and protect local library services and programs. “We know how important local libraries are to each of our communities,” said President Ken Yeager, County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. “Without these funds, our libraries would not be able to buy needed books and up-to-date research materials and would have to cut programs for children and seniors.” If adopted by voters, the Measure provides funds to continue to help local libraries to buy books and research materials; maintain library hours and services; keep qualified librarians; continue summer student reading programs; and, among other services, provide an award-winning bookmobile program to bring books to seniors, the

disabled and others.“Every library operated under the Santa Clara County Library JPA benefits from this funding,” said Supervisor Joe Simitian. “The Measure requires that every dollar from these revenues raised within a city is returned for the benefit and operation of the local library in that city.”

Without this Measure, local libraries will be forced to implement significant cuts to programs and services, including reducing or eliminating library programs for children and seniors; purchasing fewer books and databases; and closing libraries for an additional day to day-and-ahalf each week.

Taxpayer funding for local libraries has been in place for the past twenty years, and is due to expire. The Measure simply continues this funding to maintain and protect local library services, without increasing existing taxes.

“The public library offers so many things to so many people,” said Nancy Howe, County Librarian. “It gives children and adults the opportunity to learn and the freedom to dream without limits.”

In particular, the Measure impacts the more than 100,000 school age and preschool children who attend Santa Clara County Library District programs each year. “With school libraries often open only a few days per week, our public libraries are now even more important than ever for our children’s education,” said Los Altos resident Cindy Hill. “Kids rely on the up-to-date research materials to complete their school assignments and summer reading programs to keep them engaged and learning while school is out of session.”

“Funding for the Library District is subject to strict fiscal scrutiny,” said Gilbert Wong, Chair, JPA Board. “Revenue provided by this Measure would have the same stringent fiscal protections.” The Library District funding is subject to the library district’s annual, independent financial audits and public review of expenditures. Ballots will be mailed to registered voters starting July 29th and must be returned by August 27, 2013.

Board of Education Approves Groundbreaking Teacher Contract San Jose CALIFORNIA On May 23, the San Jose Unified Board of Education approved a revolutionary teacher contract that will provide teachers with multiple career paths, introduce a revamped evaluation process and give school sites increased flexibility to create learning and work environments to enhance student achievement. The new contract is the result of nearly 18 months of collaboration between San José Unified and the San José Teachers Association. Elements that have been negotiated between the parties are transformational, not only for the state of California but also nationally. District teachers gave the contract a ringing endorsement. An impressive 76% of San José Teachers Association members participated in the vote; 72% voted to approve the contract.

Under the new contract, two new roles will be created for teachers, giving them an opportunity to grow professionally without leaving the classroom. The Model Teacher and Master Teacher Leader roles will draw on educators’ experience and expertise to achieve specific outcomes aimed at improving student achievement. “Creating the Model Teacher and Master Teacher Leader roles gives us every opportunity to recognize and compensate the leadership and excellence already a part of our education community,” says Jennifer Thomas, San José Teachers Association President. “We will have a mechanism to empower educators to contribute more meaningfully by creating opportunities to share what makes them great every day.” The contract overhauls the evaluation process, making it significantly more transparent, and includes specific feedback and meaningful

discourse with the ultimate aim of helping teachers grow professionally. A Teacher Quality Panel will be created to oversee the evaluation work. “The new evaluation system will help ensure a balance of power and accountability that is unprecedented,” according to Thomas. “The teacher co-chair of the Teacher Quality Panel will be a Master Teacher Leader.” The new contract is a crucial piece of San Jose Unified’s five-year strategic plan, Opportunity21. The strategic plan is designed to eliminate the opportunity gap and provide every student with the finest 21st century education. “An important piece of the contract is school site flexibility,” according to Superintendent Vincent Matthews. “We want schools to be innovative and build an environment that will support student achievement. This contract gives them that empowerment.”

Majorities Favor Brown’s School Funding Plan SAN FRANCISCO Most Californians support Governor Jerry Brown’s revised budget proposal, and they overwhelmingly favor his spending plan for public schools. These are among the key findings of a statewide survey released today by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), with funding from The James Irvine Foundation. When read a brief description of the overall budget proposal, solid majorities of Californians (61%) and likely voters (60%) favor the plan, which includes increased spending for K–12 education and modest increases to higher education, health and human services, and correc-

tions. The governor’s plan would also reduce state debt and maintain a $1.1 billion reserve—a potential focus of debate, as some Democratic legislators look to restore funding to social services. When asked about the tradeoff, a majority of Californians (55%) prefer paying down debt and building a reserve to restoring some funding for social service programs (39%). Likely voters are twice as likely to prefer reducing the debt (62%) to restoring funding to social services (32%). The governor’s education funding plan allocates $1 million to help schools prepare for implementation of the math and English standards called the Common

Core State Standards in 2014. Asked about this component of the plan, 73 percent of Californians express support. A key feature of Brown’s school funding plan would give each K–12 school district more money than in 2011–12 and allocate additional funding to districts with more English Learners and lower-income students. In the survey, 77 percent of Californians support this idea. “Strong majorities favor the governor’s cautious approach to the budget,” says Mark Baldassare, PPIC president and CEO. “And they overwhelmingly support his ideas for school financing.”

County Board supplements Head Start funding

San Jose CALIFORNIA The Santa Clara County Board of Education on Wednesday agreed to significantly lessen the impact of federal sequestration cuts on the Head Start program, by allocating to it a total of about $1.27 million in general fund revenues and other funding relief. Without the allocation, which will take place over a two-year span, the program was facing a 5.27 percent reduction in funding, which equates to about $1.17 million. The Santa Clara County Office of Education receives federal funds to provide Head Start services to more than 2,000 preschool-age chil-

dren in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. Head Start centers–which offer comprehensive preschool program designed to meet the needs of children and their families–are located in most cities in the two-county area, including San Jose, Santa Clara, Campbell, Mountain View, Milpitas, Gilroy, and Hollister. The SCCOE is also the Early Head Start grantee in Santa Clara County. This program enrolls eligible infants and toddlers and provides services in collaboration with SJB, CalSAFE (teenage mothers) and Parkway Child Development Programs. “The Board is very supportive of our award-winning Head Start program and believes it is crucial to continue

serving our families and children through the budgetary crisis in education,” said Board President Grace Mah. “This investment in Head Start by the Board is fundamental to SJ/SV2020 and closing the achievement gap in Santa Clara County.” SJ/SV2020 is the collaborative effort by the SCCOE, the City of San José, educators, business leaders and community organizations to eliminate the achievement gap by the year 2020. The action by the board enables the Head Start program to reduce planned layoffs of teachers and support staff, and mitigates the reduction of days of operation for Head Start centers.

Should you ‘Freeze’ Your Credit Reports? Jason Alderman PRACTICAL MONEY Although the odds of having your identity stolen remain quite low, anyone who’s ever had their bank or credit card account compromised knows what a pain it can be to unravel the mess. Many victims don’t realize anything’s wrong until they apply for a new account and find their credit has been trashed; or, they start getting calls from collection agencies regarding unfamiliar accounts. More and more people have begun blocking access to information in their credit reports, even if there hasn’t yet been any fraudulent activity, by instituting a “security freeze.” A credit security freeze is where you instruct the three major credit bureaus to disallow new creditors from viewing your credit report and score. Because most businesses won’t lend without first checking your report, a freeze can deter identity thieves.

Before going to the trouble and expense of doing a credit freeze, however, learn how the process works and be aware of several possible inconveniences: First, determine if you really need a credit freeze. Fraudulent billing charges don’t necessarily indicate identity theft. Verify by reviewing your credit reports. You can order one free report annually from the three major bureaus through the AnnualCreditReport.com; otherwise you’ll pay a small fee. To freeze your credit reports, you must individually contact each credit bureau. You’ll need to supply your name, address, birth date, Social Security number and other personal information. Filing requirements and fees vary based on your state of residence (commonly $5 to $10). People over age 65 sometimes receive a discount and if you are an identity theft victim, credit freezes are free – you’ll need to provide supporting paperwork.

Once implemented, you’ll receive a unique personal identification number (PIN) from each credit bureau. Store these PINs securely because you’ll need them to temporarily lift a credit freeze and then reinstate it – usually for a fee. Although freezes can help block the creation of new credit accounts, they can’t prevent an identity thief from making charges to existing accounts. Government agencies have access for collecting child support payments or taxes, to investigate Medicaid fraud, or in response to court or administrative orders, subpoenas or search warrants. You can temporarily lift a credit freeze either for a specific period of time, or for a specific party – say, a potential landlord or employer. Always monitor your credit reports to spot errors or fraudulent activity. To take security a step further, consider placing a credit freeze.

San Jose ranks tenth on annual ‘fit cities’ list Report designed to assist with community-level efforts to improve health and fitness

INDIANAPOLIS San Jose ranked tenth in the American College of Sport Medicine’s (ACSM) American Fitness Index (AFI), which measures the health and community fitness status of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. Similar to an annual physical or wellness exam, the sixth annual report evaluates the preventive health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, health care access and community resources and policies that encourage healthy and fit lifestyles. Included in the report’s latest edition are benchmarks for each data indicator to highlight areas that need improvement. The metropolitan statistical area (MSA) of San JoseSunnyvale-Santa Clara scored 66.4 (out of 100 possible points) in the 2013 report, up two spots from last year. In 2012, the metro area ranked 12th with a score of 62.2. Min-

neapolis-St. Paul achieved a high score of 76.4 to capture the top ranking for the third consecutive year. San Jose ranked fifth on personal health indicators related to health behaviors, chronic health conditions and health care access. The area ranked 24th on community/ environmental indicators associated to the built environment, recreational facilities, park-related expenditures, physical education requirements and primary health care providers. “We have issued the American Fitness Index each year since 2008 to help health advocates and community leaders improve the quality of life in their hometowns,” said Walter Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM, chair of the AFI Advisory Board. “As urban areas attract more and more residents, it’s imperative for cities to create a built environment, fund amenities and form policies that get residents active and encourage healthy

lifestyles.” To assist with measurement and to provide a baseline measure of health and fitness status, ACSM worked with the Indiana University School of Family Medicine and a panel of 26 health and physical activity experts on the methodology of the AFI data report. Researchers analyzed the data gleaned from U.S. Census data, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), The Trust for the Public Land City Park Facts and other existing research data in order to give a scientific, accurate snapshot of the health and fitness status at a metropolitan level. For a complete list of San Jose’s areas of excellence and improvement priorities, plus a breakdown of the components that helped make up its score, please visit the AFI website at AmericanFitnessIndex.org and download the metro area report.

Teen Parents Recognized for Service to Community Redwood City CALIFORNIA Thirteen local teen parents were recognized for their leadership and service as part of Teen Talk Sexuality Education’s highly regarded sexual health education programs for middle and high school students. The teens, all part of Teen Talk’s Teen Parent Panel, were recognized on May 23 at a reception at the San Mateo Credit Union in Redwood City. Teen Talk’s Teen Parent Panel is a popular and impactful component of the organization’s two-week comprehensive sexuality education curriculum. In partnership with the Teenagae Pregnancy and Parenting Program (TAPP) at Redwood High School, Teen Talk recruits, trains and hires pregnant and parenting teenagers to answer students’ questions on the realities of teen parenthood. The Teen Parent Panel comes at the end of the two-week program and gives students an opportunity to hear firsthand about the panelists’ sexual health decisions and their experiences as teen parents. During the 2012-2013 school year, the Teen Parent Panel has provided their interactive presentations for more than 3,000 students at 20 middle

and high schools (including at Menlo-Atherton, Sequoia, Woodside, and Carlmont High Schools) in San Mateo County. Surveys from students who have seen the Teen Parent Panel found that: ∫89% were more likely to wait to have sex ∫95% were more likely to use birth control when they decide to have sex ∫93% were more likely to avoid teen parenthood “The Teen Parent Panel is a cornerstone of our middle and high school programs,” said Abigail Karlin-Resnick, Teen Talk’s Executive Director. “It is inspiring to hear the honesty and introspection with which our panelists approach their past decisions

and their passion for helping other teens learn from their experiences.” This year, the reception program featured a screening of two student documentaries created about members of the Teen Parent Panel. Menlo-Atherton High School seniors, Erendira Parra and Nimsi Garcia, members of a school filmmaking program, New Voices for Youth, collaborated with Teen Talk to create digital documentaries on the challenges and joys of teen parenting. The documentaries were originally screened at the YTH Live 2013 national conference, where the student filmmakers and members of the Teen Parent Panel moderated a panel discussion focusing on the realities of teen parenthood, in contrast to the media portrayal in shows like MTV’s “Teen Mom”.

AMERICAN COUNSELING ASSOCIATION Virtually every teenager will have his or her moody moments. Parents may find their teenage child withdrawn, difficult to talk to, or even openly hostile. It can be frustrating for parents and sometimes indicates a real problem. It isn’t difficult to understand why the typical teenager years can be difficult. For both teenagers and parents those years from 13 to 19 can sometimes seem out of control. There are the ongoing pressures of school work, the normal conflicts of adolescent social life, the physical changes brought on by puberty, and the ever present anxieties of our times, from school violence to terrorism threats. While most teens are able to handle such pressures with only occasional bouts of anxiety and moodiness, there are times when teens may find themselves overwhelmed by what is happening to them. That may result in a few days of your teen being more moody, irritable and withdrawn, or it may turn into a serious issue known as clinical depression.

Clinical depression can be difficult to recognize in a teen. While adult depression is usually seen as sadness, teens tend to “mask” what they’re feeling. Instead of seeming sad, they may seem constantly bored, irritable and uncommunicative. They may engage in risky behavior and withdraw from activities that they once enjoyed. While it takes a professional counselor or other mental health professional to diagnose clinical depression, there are signs that parents can look for: a prolonged sad, empty or anxious mood; trouble concentrating; eating and sleeping problems; decreased energy; or excessive feelings of guilt and worthlessness. When several of these symptoms are present for more than a few days, it’s time for a parent to pay attention and

take action. A starting point is simply encouraging your teen to share feelings and thoughts. Your job is to listen without being judgmental while acknowledging the reality of what your teen is feeling. Most importantly, take any references, threats or attempts at self-hurt seriously. Teen suicides are this nation’s third leading cause of death for young people. If what you’re hearing sounds serious, and if you’ve been seeing signs of depression for some time, seek out professional help. It might be your teen’s school counselor or an outside professional counselor specializing in adolescent and family issues. The right help can do much get your teenager back on track and fully enjoying his or her adolescence.

Veronica Taylor Ramirez SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR Mickey Mouse, along with a cast of Disney characters and more than 50 singers and dancers, premiered the live show, “Mickey and the Magical Map,” this past Saturday May 25 in the newly renovated Fantasyland Theatre in Disneyland. Mickey returns in his role as Yen Sid’s mischievous sorcerer’s apprentice. Yen Sid directs his mapmakers to paint a map that is able to go to any place imaginable. Mickey soon discovers the powers of the map, and takes the audience on a journey where they experience performances from a mixture of Disney films. More than 900 auditioned to become a part of

the mapmakers, the singing and dancing ensemble in the production. The cast has spent more than 40 days of rehearsal for the show. These performances are enhanced by the newly remodeled Fantasyland Theatre that features new lighting, audio and benches to seat more than 1,8000 guests. The map used in the production has almost 1 million pixels and more than 35,000 squares inches of LED screen surface. The theatre merges the ideal classic live outdoor theatre performances with technology. This musical will the be first new production since “Snow White” which last ran in 2006. “Each new show we create is a chance to push storytelling in a new direction,” said Michael Jung, Theatrical Development Executive for

Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment. “At Disney, we love the challenge of continuously looking at our classic tales and most recent stories to see how we can bring live entertainment and excitement to today’s audiences.” With a 22 minute run-time, the show includes six Disney productions numbers as well the original song for the musical, “Journey to Imagination.” The production numbers are featured from more recent Disney movies of the past decade or so with performances by King Louie from the “The Jungle Book” (“I Wan’na Be Like You)”, Pocahontas (“Just Around the Riverbend”), Mulan (“Reflection”), Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from “Tangled,” (“I See The Light”), Princess Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog” (“Dig a Little Deeper”), Sebastian from “The Little Mermaid” (“Under the Sea”) as well as “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” from “Lilo and Stitch.” The show, produced by Ray Colble with writing by Caroyln Gardner, is set for five daily performances this summer, along with performances set to run during the fall.

Artist to Entrepreneur Event Ignites Blaze

The San Francisco Film Society, having recently wrapped its inaugural A2E (Artist to Entrepreneur) programs at the 56th San Francisco International Film Festival, today announced several exciting and unexpected outcomes from the weekend of stimulating presentations and networking events. A2E— the Film Society’s signature program, bringing leading companies in the tech sphere together with independent filmmakers to discover new sustainable models for getting films made, seen and appreciated in the current digital landscape—has inspired participants to make serious groundbreaking commitments to the program’s 12 filmmakers. A2E tech companies, such as presenting sponsor Vimeo as well as Gravitas, Kickstarter, SnagFilms and more, have

pledged their ongoing support of participating filmmakers in the form of discounts, premium services, unique marketing and promotional opportunities, private consultations and case studies, clearly demonstrating the success of the Film Society’s pilot program. In an impressive show of cooperation, all platforms agreed to work together in such a way that none of their offers would require exclusivity, or in any way limit filmmakers’ involvement with other participants. Additionally, A2E direct distribution consultants, including Peter Broderick, Paola Freccero, Dylan Marchetti, Steven Raphael, Jon Reiss, Shaady Salehi, Marc Schiller and Ruth Vitale, have pledged to make themselves available for private consultation with all A2E filmmakers. “I’ve never been to a more in-

Housing Project Turned into Art Exhibit

PHOTO: Brighter than Blight. The Oakland Housing Authority, California Housing Initiative and Desley Brooks have partnered with East Oakland Artist, Ise Lyfe, to turn an abandoned housing project in to an Art Exhibit. The complex formerly known as Greenside was one of the worst housing complexes in the city.

Nine years ago Council Member Brooks got the Housing Authority to shut the complex down. It has sat vacant for all these years. The Hous-

ing Authority agreed to host the art exhibit prior to having the buildings demolished.

“When I was growing up I didn’t have words in my mouth like “poverty”, “injustice”, “racism”, “under privileged” or “prison industrial complex”. spiring industry event,” said Ted Hope, executive director of the San Francisco Film Society. “The feeling in the room during these sessions was electrifying. It really speaks to the fact that A2E is fulfilling a serious need in the indie film community that our pilot program was able to motivate these cutting-edge companies to action in such a palpable way. I’ve heard it said that only 100 people or so saw the Velvet Underground or the Sex Pistols play for the first time— yet those bands formed and went on to change the world. We had 12 platforms, 12 filmmaking teams and eight consultants, and all committed to work together to build a better infrastructure for indie film. The shift won’t happen overnight, but something started in that room. Indie film has changed its game, if not its name.” never called ourselves “at risk” or “youth of color”. We called ourselves by our names. We have names...
Nonetheless, we were growing up and developing upward in a deliberate cloud of poverty and injustice pressing us back down towards the ground. Still, we rose to the occasion of life and enjoyed the same fruits of the human experience as the less targeted and preyed upon mass of society. We were, and are, Brighter Than Blight.

I chose to blend colors materials and photographs that speak to the phenomenon of thriving. The repurposed materials and condemned housing site itself are all canvases to place this commentary on. More than I’m concerned with evoking any specific emotions (though I hope to), I’ve created this piece with the aim of giving the viewer no escape. That is the feeling for those growing up in blighted living conditions. Both the hard times and allure of the beauty that comes from struggle are inescapable. Ignoring the root causes of blight or the greatness achieved by those in spite of it are both social crimes.”

Water to Paper, Paint to Sky: The Art of Tyrus Wong At age 102, Wong is the oldest living Chinese-American Artist

San Francisco CALIFORNIA From August 15, 2013 to February 3, 2014, The Walt Disney Family Museum will present the exhibition ‘Water to Paper, Paint to Sky: The Art of Tyrus Wong.’ Organized by Michal Labrie, the museum’s director of collections, the exhibition will focus on the life and work of Chinese-American artist Tyrus Wong—a celebrated painter, muralist, kite maker, lithographer, Hollywood sketch artist, calligrapher, ceramicist, and Disney Legend. At age 102, Wong is still a practicing artist today. This retrospective features more than 150 works including paintings, sculptures, works on paper, painted scarves, kites, and more. Although he never met Walt Disney, it was the ethereal beauty of Wong’s Eastern influenced paintings that caught Walt’s eye and became the inspiration for the animated feature Bambi, which changed the way animation art was presented, and continues to be an inspiration to contemporary artists. Overcoming adversity, poverty, and racial discrimination, Wong used his pas-

sion and interpretation of the bold art of the Sung dynasty, and his experience working as a Depression- era muralist, California watercolorist, and film production illustrator, to become one of the bohemian artists whose creativity and drive helped shape the cultural, artistic life of Los Angeles during the 1930s and 40s. In 1938, Wong took a job at the Walt Disney Studios as an inbetweener, one who goes through the tedious process of making “in-between” drawings that filled out the movement of the characters between the animators’ key drawings. He recalled “At the end of the day, I thought my eyes were going to pop out,” as he flipped through countless drawings of Mickey Mouse and stared at the light in the drawing board. When he heard that Disney’s next feature-length film was going to be Bambi, he saw an opportunity to present his work. Wong read Felix Salten’s Bambi and “thought the story was very, very nice—the feeling—you could almost smell the pine,” and made sample sketches creating the lush mountain and forest settings,

inspired by Sung dynasty landscape paintings. He had a different approach and one that had never been seen before in an animated film. He explained, “I tried to keep it very, very simple and create the atmosphere, the feeling of the forest.” Tom Codrick, the film’s art director, was impressed with his sensitive style, which was vastly different from the more ornate style of Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which preceded it. Tyrus’s Chineseinspired sketches and paintings set the look and tone for Bambi, and were some of the most strikingly beautiful art ever produced at the Walt Disney Studios. In 2001, Wong was named a Disney Legend, and his work continues to inspire and influence the leading animators of today. The exhibition also includes paintings, hand painted ceramics and silk scarves, original greeting cards, works on paper, and his latest work including handmade and handpainted kites, which range in size from six inches to 100 feet.

The New Office Attire

EL OBSERVADOR | www.el-observador.com

This Summer: Stay in Shape without a Gym Membership (STATEPOINT) It’s not as easy to hide under layers of clothing during the summer. You’ll want to look your best in those shorts, tshirts and bathing suits; as such, staying in shape is key. Many lifestyle experts say you have more than enough space for a makeshift gym inside your home or apartment, no matter how small it is. And during the warmer months of the year, you can also make great use of your home’s outdoor spaces.

Juan Carlos Miranda SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR Suits are cool, classy and sharp. Everyone from the big CEOs, Presidents and high ranking executives wear them to look professional and command authority. However, with all the new internet companies popping up everywhere and all surging young, new talent , these young entrepreneurs are redefining the office attire and are giving the suit a more relax and cool feel. Dark colored suits were always considered a more serious attire for the office, commanding respect and defining roles. Nowadays young professionals are adding their own flavor to the mix and putting their own spin to the classic suit. A light colored suit adds a more mellow feel to the already exaggerated professional etiquette. Choosing to go with a two piece, light colored suit adds light to the work environment and makes every professional look serious without seeming uptight. Forget the boring patterns. You can either be successful wearing patterns or not at all, depending on your shape. So ditch the patterns and go for solid colors and a well tailored suit that will complement your shape. You know what else you should ditch? The uncomfortable dress shirt. You are already fulfilling your ‘look professional’ duty by wearing a suit, plus there are no written rules about having to wear a collar shirt everyday at work. So for those days that you don’t feel like ironing that shirt then throw on your favorite tee and head on over to work. How cool are your new work shoes? Very. Tennis shoes are no longer gym bound, you can pair them with your cool suit and reach a new level of swag and still look professional. That’s what being young and daring is all about, having fun. Now, what do you think of the new work attire?

FASHION & BEAUTY

“Not everyone can designate an entire room of their apartment, condo or home to exercise; but as long as you have some floor space, you can get a great full-body workout,” says Wendy Froehlich of Homes.com, one of the nation’s top online real estate listing and lifestyle resources. Whether you live in a mansion or efficiency, you can stay fit with these great moves: • Get Zen with yoga: All you need is a yoga mat and

13

a little floor space to practice yoga; a quiet and relaxing way to wind down, stay flexible and gain strength. Try the poses on your back deck, balcony porch or even your living room. Likewise, Pilates moves can be done on a yoga mat as well. • Easy Equipment: Get toned with free weights, exercise bands, ankle weights and stability balls. You can do your reps right in front of the television. And the beauty of this inexpensive equipment is that it doesn’t take up much space inside your home or apartment when you aren’t using it. • Flat Abs: For minimal movement with maximum impact, try bicycle crunches. You’ll target your core -- specifically your obliques -- without disturbing the neighbors. • Push it with a plank: Simply push off your mat as though you’re doing a push up and rest on your elbows and toes. Keep your back flat

PHOTO SOURCE: (c) Stockbyte. and maintain the pose for two sets of two minutes. It’s a challenging but rewarding fitness move that provides a full body workout and especially targets your core. • Classic moves: Some of the best moves require no equipment whatsoever. Pushups, crunches, squats and floor lunges are all classic fitness moves that will help you tone and tighten in your very own home. • Pull ups: A pull-up bar is simple to install in any doorway, so even those in temporary home rentals can target their biceps and back muscles with a few sets each day.

• Every day activity: Make simple lifestyle changes to burn extra calories throughout the day. If you live in a multi-story building, become a more active apartment dweller and take the stairs. Did you know that you can burn about 300 calories per hour of housework? Get a great workout while vigorously cleaning your apartment once a week. Drop the excuses! No matter your budget or space limitations, you can look great this summer by designing a workout routine for your home.

How Miss America Stays Chic (NAPS) You don’t have to be Mallory Hagan to look like Miss America—or, at any rate, to dress like her. Hagan’s favorite designer, Joseph Ribkoff, has a new collection of dresses and coordinated sportswear that features stylish dresses for every occasion, from the boardroom to the garden party, from casual to more formal, with a simple change of accessories. Highlights include wraps draped to shapely perfection, retro-style sheaths and carefree tunics. Even if you don’t travel as much as Miss America, you can enjoy travel-smart coordinated separates in easy-to-care-for fabrications. They’re colorful and comfortable, for the woman on the go. Breezy sheer tops flow over casually cropped and classic trousers, while a selection of lightweight jackets finishes off a look for effortless style. Graphic black and white join brilliant, multicolor graphic and floral prints as well as bright solids of dazzling electric blue, ambitious orange and provocative pink. The aim of each piece: It fits, it’s figure flattering and it’s fashionable.

Tips for getting the most out of your smartphone camera (BPT) Today, the majority of adults have a mobile phone, and we’re using it for far more things than simply making phone calls. According to a 2012 report from The Pew Research Center’s Internet-& American Life Project, of the 85 percent of American adults who own a cellphone, 85 percent use their cellphones to take photos. Smartphone cameras are quickly replacing basic digital cameras for snapping photos on the go. Capturing a memorable moment is easy with your cellphone at your side, but if you aren’t sure what you’re doing, you may end up with fuzzy, dark or distorted pictures. To help you get the most out of your smartphone’s camera capabilities, Stephen Sneeden, Xperia product marketing manager, offers some expert tips: Tip No. 1: Get to know your device Most new smartphone cameras offer multiple camera functions, effects, settings and options. It’s important to learn what’s available on your phone so you don’t miss a beat. Visit the manufacturer’s website or check out tutorial videos on YouTube - many phone makers now make these available to consumers for free.

Tip No. 2: Know when to use certain functions - and when to turn them off While your smartphone camera may have a flash, zoom and other features, sometimes those functions won’t be optimum for the conditions in which you’re shooting. For example, turning off the flash may help prevent glare, bright spots and red-eye in certain situations. Zooming may cause an image to degrade or blur; you may want to shoot the entire image and then use editing software to crop it for the portion of the image you want to focus on. Tip No. 3: Consider an upgrade Technology is ever-evolving, and smartphone cameras are constantly being improved. If you’ve had your phone for a while and aren’t happy with the photos it takes, it may be time for an upgrade. When shopping, analyze key camera elements like megapixel count, sensor quality, user interface and ease of use. Most smartphones have 8 megapixel, primary cameras. Tip No. 4: Make the most of HD technology High resolution capabilities are a significant advantage for smartphone videogra-

phers. Look for cameras that offer Full HD recording. This function gives you the ability to capture details that translate well on larger HD screens like that of a TV. Tip No. 5: Download free photo apps Enhance your phone’s photo capabilities with some of today’s best photo apps that cost absolutely nothing. The award-winning application Snapseed (iOS, Android) allows you to adjust saturation, color levels, brightness, contrast as well as edit and enhance styling with a variety of filters. Quickly crop, edit and fix flaws with Adobe’s Photoshop Express (iOS, Android). Of course, social media junkies love Instagram (Android, iOS) because it’s a snap to share photos across social networks like Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. Tip No 6: Don’t forget photo basics The principles of good picture-taking remain the same, no matter what kind of camera you use. That means it’s important to keep the lens clean, carefully frame the shot, fill the frame with your subject, make sure the image is in focus, pay attention to lighting, and - when photographing kids and pets - get on the same level as your subject.
