A WOMEN'S RIGHT TO DECIDE

R

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

ecently state legislatures have passed legislation which prohibit abortion once a fetal heartbeat becomes evident. These state legislative bodies and the state governors who sign off on legislation passed, which established that abortion-prohibiting as the public policy of the state having jurisdiction, are all male elected official dominated. In one state, that legislature had three women as elected officials. All three women chose not to speak up during the brief deliberation debates. I know of no hearings, no input by medical experts in the fields of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob-Gyn); and no posting of these proposed public policy for a 30-day “review and comments” period by professionals or residents. Were women provided an opportunity to voice their perspectives and concerns? CA's Attorney General Xavier Becerra wrote, “Going after abortion rights. Blocking access to birth control (products and services). Attempts (continue) to dismantle the entire Affordable Care Act (2010 ObamaCare)... These conservative attacks threaten access to health care for millions. And while California leads the fight in standing up to these assaults, we (Californians) can’t let Big Pharma sneak by for their role in blocking access to (affordable) healthcare, too.” (Source: Xavier Becerra, Email 05.27.2019) As a former military surgicalmedical technician, I attended some 300 live births and

personally witnessed the human birthing process in a military hospital which provided health care services to the military, their families and Foreign Affairs personnel, and others as authorized during the Occupation of Japan (1946-'49). Later, in my life's journey, I married Ruth Palmisano and we had three children (two girls and a boy). Finally, my professional career included two medical schools and three major medical centers. Let me be direct: Male elected officials must not be allowed to limit a woman's right to decide or choose any action or nonaction which involves human reproduction except for making public policy which impacts their own vas deferens, testicles and penis. Too many males are simply sperm donors who do not fully participate as a father and supportive partner to his wife and children. Men need to take into account that when a woman decides to have a family, she commits her entire being, body and soul, to getting pregnant; experiencing a 9-month gestation process which ideally should contain prenatal and postnatal care; and following the birthing experiences, remains committed to nurturing her child for the next 18 years. During all this, it would be very good for the mother (woman) to have the full support of her partner because she will need respite relief periods, support and companionship, all provided with respect and a dignified caring loving commitment. Idealogues who think they can direct and control human reproductive activities and processes are simply and totally wrong. They have over-reached their jurisdiction into intimate marriage and family areas which

involve community, culture and religious beliefs (mine is Christian). I am aware that each nation has population officials who are rightly concerned about birth rates which maintain that nation's population or allow it to grow or shrink. Their concern is about that nation's skilled labor pool and its impact upon its domestic economy. Those nations which permit immigrants to become residents and citizens experience the most healthy and creative populations because inbreeding results in the expression of too many limiting biological issues. Cultures which accept and allow some mixed racial/cultural marriages, experience what geneticists term hybrid vigor. It is NOT a good practice to limit human relationships. This is why incest and rape are taboo in many societies. (As exemplified by certain royal families). In-breeding results in the expression of several recessive genes, lung cystic fibrosis is an example. Today, the entire human genome has been established using the basic DNA technology established by Dr. Arthur Kornber, M.D., Nobel Prize 1959. Legislative bodies (U.S. Congress and all State legislatures) would be well advised to deal with establishment of a comprehensive health care service system which is available to all residents and which includes both female and male reproduction services and research. Instead of limiting resources such as curtailment of Planned Parenthood budgets (only 3% of all their funds are expended supporting abortion issues), encourage women to practice life styles which include balanced nutrition, exercise, an employment vocation or profession, religious, community, and public policy

involvement & activities.

control, etc.)

It is very important to provide for community safety and security. Let's eliminate gun violence and domestic violence which kills many women. Provide funding for safe havens from domestic violence. Most important is to provide homes, child care programs, and education (pre-K to 12th grade) and beyond.

Where possible, an unwanted child could be put up for adoption as many couples are childless and want to adopt a child as their own.

It is simply not right to craft laws which make abortions a criminal activity resulting in the loss of licenses, clinics, mental and behavioral counseling services, etc. Since women, as mothers, need to be supported and provided access to respites from being fully responsible, these issues require governance and resources. After all, in our Judeo-Christian value system, human life is price-less - and what is also very essential is the human relationships which a child needs to experience and learn. All of these issues require some level of expertise which is organized and transferred through an appropriate education process incorporated into community programs. Parents need to be taught parenting skills; the head of household needs to have vocational skills enabling the earning of a living income. The raising of a child in a family setting may be an ideal which needs more attention and supportive services. In the past, the prohibition of abortions have resulted in an underground unmonitored service system which is unaffordable to many women. Today, many have forgotten the extent of human suffering (death of pregnant women; suicides; lack of delivery of services and expertise needed in a licensed clinic that practices infection

If laws are needed, take the essential steps to permit religious and cultural input by all. Let existing standards continue to exist, especially Roe vs Wade already adjudicated years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court. I favor the inclusion and involvement of women in crafting those laws which deal with families, human reproduction, and health care. Women have a different perspective and scope of experience which needs to be tapped when dealing with issues that involve their female bodies. Since 1920, women have been full citizens with their right to vote. It is essential that the silent majority and all women use their voting power to elect more progressive elected officials who will enact legislation which enables and empowers rather than dominates and controls. It is possible to stop ideologues who want to dominate and control by voting for elected officials who are progressive women who will speak up and push back those wrongful approaches to human reproduction. One thing is certain: Women's issues and their perspectives must be listened to and included if we want the general status of any community to improve. Trust a woman to make the right decisions especially when it comes to dealing with issues impacting her own body. Remember: It is the female of the species who produces the next generation. A woman's right to decide and choose must be respected, allowed, and supported. When mothers are happy and content, life is good.

he job market is rapidly changing, thanks to new and emerging technologies. As a result, job training has become highly specialized, even at the high school level. While young people living in urban and suburban communities often benefit from on-site access to the specialized education that they will need for future career success, those living in rural areas must sometimes rely on distance education to get the same training, as smaller rural schools can’t always realistically offer a wide range of specialized coursework. With this in mind, a recent report from NTCA– The Rural Broadband Association, highlights the need for high-speed Internet access in every community nationwide to meet the demands of tomorrow’s job market. With two job categories poised for demand, middle-skill and STEM jobs, experts say that reliable rural broadband access will help ensure that there are enough trained workers available to fill the next generation of American jobs, while also helping to expand job opportunities for a greater number of young people. Rural broadband providers continue to play a vital role. By leveraging their networks and working closely with local educational institutions, they are providing fiber connectivity and

broadband to schools in harder-to-reach locations. As a result of these initiatives, a greater number of communities and schools can offer specialized coursework, career guidance and more to their students, helping to build local career opportunities and strengthen local economies. Those who have directly benefitted from rural broadband echo this sentiment. “High-speed internet service in my rural area allowed me to participate more fully in high school and gave me the chance to explore more opportunities after graduation. I am so grateful for the access it provided me, I am now actually working at a broadband company myself and plan to study business management and marketing at school,” says Devin Bryant, a young adult living and working in Abbeville, S.C. “Good service allows me to stay in my rural area near family and friends and still pursue the job opportunities I want.” With an effort already underway by NTCA to build smart and connected rural communities, experts say you can expect to see expanded educational opportunities and strengthened local economies nationwide. To learn more about these efforts, visit ntca.org. Access to reliable broadband is vital for today’s young people in their search for education and job training.

CARTAS “NO-MATCH”: CIENTOS DE INMIGRANTES NO-MATCH LETTERS: HUNDREDS OF IMMIGRANTS PIERDEN EMPLEOS BAJO LA PRESIÓN DE TRUMP LOSE JOBS UNDER PRESSURE FROM TRUMP

hoenix - Hundreds of immigrant laborers nationwide who can't prove they are in the United States legally are being forced to quit their jobs after their employers receive what are known as no-match letters from the Social Security Administration (SSA). No-match letters are sent out when the SSA detects discrepancies between its records and the information provided by employees on their W-2 tax forms. In some cases, however, the discrepancies are due to administrative or date-entry errors. The SSA announced earlier this year that it would resume the practice of sending no-match letters to employers after a seven-year hiatus. Out of fear of being hit with federal sanctions, employers receiving the letters have chosen to do a "cleanup" of their labor forces. "These measures put employers in an alarming situation, since they depend on a workforce of thousands of immigrants to keep their businesses operative at a time of high employment," immigration activist and analyst Carmen Cornejo told EFE

This year President Donald Trump's administration has been sending more than 570,000 no-match letters to companies all over the country, The New York Times reported. Cornejo said she often receives calls from workers asking for advice on the dismissals, which they consider "unjustified." She said that those letters are causing companies a bout of anxiety, principally those in the hotel, agriculture and construction industries, the sectors most affected by the measure. Critics say the reactivation of the letters is part of the hard line of the Republican administration's immigration policies. "This has been completely planned - the government's actions are deliberate and are on the rise. This is not just business as usual, but the government is demanding an ever greater number of cases," Cornejo said.

"Nobody wants problems with the federal government - I only wanted to know what my responsibilities were. You can't just go ahead and fire people, you first have to give them the chance to prove they are working here legally," the businessman told EFE. Sofia Andrade lived through all those problems when she worked at a company that prepared salads. She said her boss suddenly told a group of them that they had four days to prove they were here legally and so keep their jobs. "They told us at a meeting about a message they got from immigration - the boss said they asked him for a list of names of all the workers together with their Social Security (numbers)," Andrade told EFE. "Close to 40 of us had to quit our jobs," she said. Now, she added, she has to work in a carpentry shop with a pay of $11 per hour under "very tough" conditions. "The work is very hard, the boss is abusive because at times we work 13-hour days and don't get paid for all the extra time...but I have to put up with it because I don't have my papers," Andrade said.

isits to the doctor can be very productive with a little preparation work before the appointment, experts say.

"For some people, visits to the doctor can be discouraging or even frightening, but there are steps you can take beforehand to improve the experience, encourage communication and therefore improve health outcomes," says Barbara L. McAneny. , MD, President of the American Medical Association (AMA). "By being open and honest with your doctor and by asking questions, you can play a key role in preventing the progression of chronic diseases and in how to set a healthier course."

4. Get analysis. Ask your doctor about the necessary health screens based on your age, gender, and other risk factors, including your family history. Healthfinder.gov is a good resource for finding recommended preventive services. 5. Find out what your risk is and act. Talk with your doctor about the risk of type 2 diabetes. Before the consultation, you can take a free self-screening test online at DoIHavePrediabetes.org to find out if you have prediabetes. During the visit, the doctor will have to confirm a diagnosis of prediabetes and can help you develop an individualized plan to prevent it from progressing to type 2 diabetes. 6. Get vaccinated. Talk to your doctor about the importance of vaccination. Many vaccinations require reinforcements after a while. Be sure you are up to date on your vaccinations.

Here are eight ways to get more out of your next doctor visit:

7. Get help. Tell your doctor if you have been feeling bad and think you might be suffering from depression.

1. Know your history. A family health history can help your doctor and other health professionals identify if you are at increased risk for certain diseases and disorders. With this information, they can make informed decisions for your care, from recommending specific treatments or diagnoses to helping you plan for lifestyle changes that will help you stay well. Before your next visit, gather as much information as you can to share it with your doctor.

8. Know your numbers. Track your health data such as your height, weight, body mass index and blood pressure in order to share the trends with your doctor and act if necessary. Visit LowerYourHBP. org to find out your blood pressure numbers and the risks of uncontrolled high blood pressure, also known as "hypertension," which alter your life, and find a list of questions to ask your doctor to control your blood pressure

exico City - As people approach a three-story building on Mexico City's west side, words are heard that come from other latitudes: men and women in the typical dress of Islamic countries speak in foreign tongues, people greet each other with the words "Salaam-alaikum" (Peace be unto you, in Arabic). Anyone of any religion is welcome at the Muslim Community Educational Center, where they may take part in the different Islamic activities. Inside the building, the impression of being whisked away to the Middle East is complete when the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer with the phrase "Allahu-akbar" (God is great), after which the imam gives his sermon, first in Arabic and then in Spanish In Mexico, a small but active Muslim community has carved out a niche where their unity may be protected in a country where its members are a minority, a microcosm of the Islamic world that reflects the diversity of its members origins.

the atmosphere of Ramadan in non-Islamic countries is nothing like in Muslim nations," he said. "So we have tried, as founders, to create the environment of our native lands that we miss so much," Louahabi added. He said that Muslims started bringing food and getting together to break their fasts, and gradually the word spread. "Then the embassies heard what was happening that they started bringing food as well," he said. The more they emulated the atmosphere of their native lands, the less they missed them, according to the sheik. That feeling is obvious at the Educational Center, a place of worship founded in 2001 by immigrants, which also gives classes in integration and subjects related to Islam. During the daily prayers at the center, the faithful follow the imam's sermon attentively, united in their faith despite their diverse origins.

While the Statistics Institute has just 3,760 Muslims on record in the country based on the 2010 census, the community's own estimates indicate there are some 12,000, according to Sheik Said Louahabi, head of the Educational Center in the capital's Polanco district.

"The nature of the mosque we have at the Educational Center reflects the origins of people from Africa, Europe and Asia. We have Muslims from Indonesia, Malaysia, Albania, France, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt and Palestine. We have Muslims from everywhere," Moussa Youssef, a member of the center, told EFE recently.

"When I got here in 1994 there were 88 of us, including the diplomats. The truth is we've grown incredibly," the sheik of Moroccan origin told EFE.

He noted that there are also local Muslims among the 2,000 to 3,000 faithful who attend the center. "The great majority are Mexicans," he said.

He said that Muslim immigrants have created a world where they can practice their faith almost as if they were in their countries of origin.

For Youssef, a native of Egypt, Mexico is a favorable land for practicing Islam, thanks to certain cultural similarities and the religious tolerance of the Latin American nation.

This can be observed particularly during Ramadan, the ninth month on the Islamic calendar (and which this year lasts from May 5 to June 4), when Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during the day and break their fast at nightfall. "The significance of Ramadan for Muslims is above all to comply with this, one of the five pillars of Islam," the sheik said. He added that the other four are the profession of faith, daily prayers, charity toward the poor, and the pilgrimage to Mecca. According to Louahabi, when he came to Mexico the Muslims missed the way they practiced their religion in the lands of their birth. "We found work, thanks be to God, and we found physical, bodily happiness. But we did not find spiritual happiness because

Sheik Louahabi said that all Muslims in Mexico try to be united under the concept that there is but one God and Muhammad is his prophet. But he acknowledged that sects exist "for their own interests." "That is why we are not perfectly united," he said. For that reason, when he gives a sermon he tells the faithful that if anyone asks them to what religion they belong, they must simply answer: Islam. "But if they are asked, 'Are you Shiite? Are you Sunni? Are you Ibadi?' I tell them to answer, "I am Muslim,' because the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) said 'You are called Muslims.' We all follow the same path, the religion of the prophet Muhammad," he said.

"Encontramos

trabajo,

gracias

a

Dios,

y

In San José, the overall homeless count was 6,172, which is an increase of 1,822 over 2017. “Despite our collective efforts to house more than 6,900 homeless neighbors in the last three years, for every person we bring in from the cold, the economy pushes three more out the door,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo.

anta Clara County, Calif. – The County of Santa Clara and City of San José announced this month its preliminary results of the biennial homeless census covering the County’s 15 cities and unincorporated areas. The count, conducted over two days in January 2019, found the number of homeless adults increased significantly over the past two years, resulting in an increase in the region’s overall homeless population. Together, the County and City have housed approximately 4,000 formerly homeless families and individuals since 2017. Despite these efforts, the number of newly homeless

residents continues to outpace the capacity of County and City systems to place people in stable housing. Nearly three new people are seeking assistance from the County for each person who exits homelessness. “The reasons for homelessness are many and varied,” said Joe Simitian, President of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. “The high cost and shortage of housing are making a bad problem worse. Combining our efforts to prevent homelessness and create supportive housing with 2016 Measure A – Affordable Housing Bond – funds will continue to be an essential strategy in addressing homelessness. So far, the County has committed $234 million of Measure A

“We must double down on homelessness prevention and, in turn, alleviate the human misery and greater public cost following an eviction notice. It’s also time to end the reign of the NIMBY in Silicon Valley. We all have a shared responsibility to address this crisis — every city and every neighborhood. That means we must house homeless neighbors here, not the proverbial ‘somewhere else’.” In Santa Clara County, the 2019 census found the number of homeless family members was 921, down from 1075 in 2017. The number of homeless veterans was 653, down slightly from 660 in 2017. The census found the number of homeless family members in San José was 313, down from 340 in 2017. The number of homeless veterans was 476, up slightly from 468 in 2017. To address the rise of homelessness, the County and City are focused on building deeply affordable housing. The County has prioritized development of housing for residents experiencing homelessness and

households making less than 30 percent of Area Median Income. The San José City Council recently approved allocating 45 percent of the City’s investments in permanent affordable housing for extremely-low-income residents. The 2019 census found the numbers also increased for chronically homeless and the unsheltered population. • Countywide, the number of chronically homeless was 2,470, an increase of 373 over 2017. The percentage of homeless county residents who were unsheltered was 82 percent, up from 74 percent in 2017. And the number of unaccompanied youth and young adults was 1,876. While this figure was down from 2017, the decline was due in part to a change in methodology for counting young people. • In San José, the number of people considered chronically homeless was 1,579, an increase of 374 over 2017. The percentage of homeless residents who were unsheltered was 83 percent, up from 74 percent in 2017. And the number of unaccompanied youth and young adults was 1,391. This was down from 2017. However, as with the County, the decline was due to a change in methodology. “Now is the time to redouble our efforts to solve this crisis,” said Jennifer Loving, Chief Executive Officer of Destination: Home. “The solutions are right here in front of us - we just need to mobilize the collective will and resources to scale our proven strategies and meet the enormous need in our community. Bottom line: homelessness is solvable.”

an Anselmo, CA For centuries, goats have been the best allies of humanity in preventing wildfires, and now California is counting on them to help ward off the enormous, destructive blazes that every summer seem to get worse. After the devastating Tubbs Fire that in 2017 took 22 lives and laid waste to a large part of the wine-growing regions of Napa and Sonoma, their neighbors in Marin County north of San Francisco decided to get to the root of the problem so nothing like that would ever happen near where they lived, which is when they brought in the goats. Since then, 1,200 goats have fed every springtime on the steep mountainsides of Marin County with a very clear mission - to create a 200-hectare (490-acre) firebreak some 20km (12mi) long. "We call them four-legged firefighters, we really do. They are contributing greatly to the safety of the community, they are contributing to reducing climate change over time. They are extremely popular here in the community," Todd Lando, a retired firefighter and executive coordinator of FIRESafe MARIN, told EFE. Though this is an ancient method that is still practiced in many parts of the world, such as the Mediterranean, Africa and Latin America, the grazing of goats to

"clean" woodlands of weeds and prevent fires has scarcely ever occurred in the United States, so Marin County has to bring in goatherds from abroad. Lando said they had analyzed alternatives for creating a large firebreak free of combustible vegetation in a way that would be effective and not prohibitively expensive. The transport and maintenance of more than 1,000 head of livestock in a mostly residential area is no easy task and required the cooperation of multiple entities including the Fire Department, ranches, a private school and filmmaker George Lucas, who has an estate here. Lando also noted the benefits goats bring to the environment and for meeting the objectives California has set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,

for in case these animals are not used, motorized machinery would be required to do the same job. "They are quiet, they're very easy on the land. And what we find is, the following year the areas that have been grazed grow back even more beautifully, with more wildflowers and greener lush vegetation than what we saw before. So, they really have an aesthetic benefit to the community and a safety benefit," he said. FIRESafe MARIN uses computer-devised models to determine where fires are most likely to start, which way the flames are likely to spread once they break out, and which human communities will be affected, information that is used to decide where to send the goats to clear the land.

orest therapy uses immersion in nature to help soothe frayed nerves and restore a sense of mental well-being — and has even been shown to boost our immune systems and help us recover faster from physical maladies. The modern forest therapy movement is rooted in the Shinrin-yoku “forest bathing” practice developed in Japan in the 1980s that has since become a central part of preventative health care and healing in Japanese medicine. “There are an infinite number of healing activities that can be incorporated into a walk in a forest or any other natural area,” reports the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs (ANFT), which trains students to become certified forest therapists. “An activity is likely to be healing when it makes room for listening, for quiet and accepting presence, and for inquiry through all eight of the sensory modes we possess.” Practitioners insist that forest therapy is rooted in science, citing dozens of research papers documenting the healing powers of something as simple as a stroll in the woods. According to ANFT, forest bathing seems to significantly mitigate the root cause of a multitude of ailments: stress. Given the role of stress in everything from headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis and other health problems, forest therapy could be an important part of staying or getting healthy. “Levels of the stress hormone cortisol

decreased in test subjects after a walk in the forest, when compared with a control group of subjects who engaged in walks within a laboratory setting,” adds ANFT. “Forest bathing catalyzes increased parasympathetic nervous system activity which prompts rest, conserves energy, and slows down the heart rate while increasing intestinal and gland activity.” The research bears out the theory: the average concentration of salivary cortisol — a stress hormone — in people who gazed out at forest scenery for 20 minutes was 13.4 percent lower than those in urban settings. Meanwhile, leisurely forest walks were measurably

better than urban walks at reducing cortisol levels and sympathetic nerve activity and decreasing blood pressure and heart rate. Meanwhile, other research shows we are better at creative problem-solving after time spent in the wilderness. Additionally, nature immersion has been linked to an increase in immunity boosting “killer T” cells, which the body uses to stave off infections and even possibly to fight the growth of cancer cells. While anyone can take a hike through the woods and indulge in their own form of forest bathing, going with a guide can make the experience that much more meaningful. ACTOR AND MUSICIAN MYSTIC INSCHO FROM MUSICAL “SCHOOL OF ROCK” TALKS ABOUT HIS INSPIRATIONS, AND WHY KIDS WILL LOVE THE SHOW BASED ON THE 2003 JACK BLACK FILM

Mystic Inscho (Right) plays the guitar as Zack in “School of Rock”.

W

Arturo Hilario El Observador

hen Jack Black’s music-heavy film “School of Rock” was released, Mystic Inscho was negative six years old. That’s not actually how time and age works, but it is impressive to see that the nine-year-old is channeling rock star antics in his performances both on and off the theater stage. Multi-instrumental, fluent in mandarin, (Inscho is half Chinese), Inscho has been on stage since the age of four. In the show Inscho plays Zack, one of the lead child characters who plays the guitar. The musical, like the film, revolves around a slacker musician turned music teacher at a prestigious school - by lying to get the job. At Horace Green Prep, Dewey Finn (Jack Black in the film) teaches his students to essentially break out of their molds and become a rag tag band. Inscho recently answered some questions relating to his experiences and thoughts on the musical that has been described as one that portrays how music empowers children and adults. Hi Mystic, I wanted to start off by learning a bit about yourself. What inspired you to get into acting and playing music? Well I started playing piano when I was about five years old, and then I wanted to do more, so then I started dancing and then my mom, she wanted me to do more too so then I felt inspired to do other stuff, so she got me a mini guitar and then I didn’t particularly like it but then she sent me into a lesson and I played more. Then I got to really enjoy playing it [and] got a real look into it. Then I started playing drums and guitar, and here I am. Do you prefer playing any one instrument? Are you more fond of guitars? I like all of them. My favorite would be guitar, but I love all of them. Could you tell me a little bit about what sort of music you compose? What sort of things are you writing about?

I write stuff about the tour, about different cities. I haven’t been doing that for a while, but I want to get back to it. So, I write stuff about travel days, I write about shows, how enthusiastic audiences are, all kinds of stuff. When you became part of “School of Rock”, had you heard of it beforehand? Had you watched the movie it’s based on? No I hadn’t watched the movie before but I [had] heard it was a movie, I heard it was a play, when I got the audition call I watched the Broadway version of it and it seemed really cool so I sent in a tape. After I got it, on a flight, since the planes have screens, I watched [the movie]. So, I watched the movie about halfway through the tour. Do you think there’s a lot of differences you notice from the movie and the play? There’s different music, there’s new songs, and there’s different people and [they] have different personalities so it changes up the show a lot. Could you talk about your character of Zack in the show? What does he do and what is he like? So, he is a boy whose very shutout by his dad because his dad is always working on his phone, calling people, telling them to do stuff, and his dad never has time for him. So, his dad sends him to Horace Green and he really feels left out. [But] when Dewey comes in, Dewey teaches [Zack] to really get out of his shell and stand up to his dad, and he just really rocks out in the end. What is it like being on a stage in front of a large audience, acting and playing guitar? If there was one word to describe it, I would describe it as fun, because I’ve been doing theater for half of my life and I’ve really enjoyed it. [Also] I’ve never gotten anything this big, so I was scared at first but then I kind of got used to it after five shows and then I started to like it. And it’s just fantastic. Would you say you have a favorite moment in the show? The moment would be [the songs] “You’re in the Band” or “Teacher’s Pet”. I

like “Teacher’s Pet” because I get a solo in the end and it’s where they all play their instruments and show their parents they can play. [I like] “You’re in the Band” because it’s when they first learn that they can play their instruments and each kid has this sort of solo you could call it, even the ensemble, like Dewey says, “Who wants to be the roadie?” and someone says, “Me!” It’s just every kid gets their spotlight for a second. When you’re preparing to go on stage what is your day like when it comes to practicing and getting ready for the shows? So this is like my daily schedule most of the time: I’ll wake up in the morning, have breakfast, sometimes I go to school, I eat dinner or lunch, I come back, practice guitar, play some games or watch some TV, and then I just get ready for the show and there’s not a lot of time to explore stuff, but sometimes we have off days and some time to explore the city. And do you have a favorite city you’ve traveled to on this tour? It’s probably Ottawa, in Canada because we were finally out of the United States and we get to explore new cultures and stuff. What do you like best about traveling and performing? There’s a lot of things but my favorite is going around and exploring new cities. It’s fun so I see local attractions like the zoo, [or] like in Seattle we got to see the Space Needle. Also, in our free time, I get to hang out with the other kids and play with them and chat, and that’s fun. And now my last question - if you wanted to recommend “School of Rock” how would you do so? I would recommend it as good for kids, good for adults, good for everyone. Especially good for kids because it teaches them to get out of the show and if they want to do something, just go do it. Don't be afraid of it, just go for it. Photo Credit: Evan Zimmerman/ Murphy Made
