LET’S IMPROVE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

Innovate Public Schools, an advocacy CBO supported by Community Foundation Silicon Valley, used the CA Department of Education data base for a report entitled “Broken Promises: The Children Left Behind in Silicon Valley Schools”. The report was written by Joanne Jacobs (M.A., Communications), with Matt Hammer (Director, PACT, San Jose, CA) and Linda Murray, Ph.D. (former Superintendent, COE). This report focused on San Mateo and Santa Clara County elementary and middle schools. This data base shows that both ‘high’ as well as ‘low’ performance schools were not preparing Latino students to continue their individual education journey at CSU/UC campuses. Many commentaries followed in mainstream media focused primarily on “what should/could public schools do?” Succinctly stated, Latino were not performing as well as Anglo and Asian American students based on the API (academic performance index) scores and proficiency in algebra 1 (a proven indicator of future training success). Mitigation efforts were addressed by school officials and others. The recent emphasis on “Core Curriculum” will receive more attention. Public schools, from pre-K to 8th grade need to focus upon teaching students the basic skills needed by all. These are ‘reading, writing, and arithmetic’ along with communication and relationship skills. Many vocations can be acquired through internships, apprenticeships, and

‘job shadowing’. Today, it is simply not in the best interest of society and its commerce to emphasize all students be prepared to go to college. The education system needs to prepare each student to develop his/her highest potential as an individual who can perform ‘normally’ in society and its commerce. A broad spectrum of intellectual and academic ability variances exists in any student cohort. Let each individual achieve what is possible given their individuality, social, cultural and economic circumstances. Education systems need to develop evaluation and assessment programs which assist students and their parents to objectively plan a future. Today, sufficient skilled professionals in counseling programs do not exist in many school districts because of budget constraints. The goal of Public Education Systems must be to provide a high quality ‘education for millions’. Charter and private schools have their place, but do not address the challenge of ‘education for millions’. Vouchers may be used to engage parents, but they need to learn to effectively use them. In order to have a high quality education system a requirement is to include all: government (local, state and federal), parents, school administrators & teacher’s associations (PTA’s), the public and those who represent commerce. But at no time should commercial needs for skilled technical and professional STEM employees ‘take over’ the resources and mission of a public education system. Society, government, the economy and culture play a role. The individual’s ambition, personal passion and drive all play a role. Many Latino students drop out of school simply because they need to work to augment the family income. This is especially true of low-income families whose wage earners

are lucky to earn $10 per hour ($20,800 per year). These families live in poverty; their children know that and respond accordingly. Why work that hard for excellent grades when my parents cannot afford my college degree aspirations? Many factors involved in education need to be considered collectively with today’s needs and perspectives in mind. Let’s remind ourselves what some of these factors are: 1) Could fewer school districts in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties achieve the desired future outcomes? Why have 54 school districts? Reduced administrative costs could be directed towards classroom instruction. 2) Commercial interests must provide revenues to support the training of scientists, engineers, technologists, mathematicians (STEM) needed by their enterprises and other professionals needed (medical, biological and agricultural). Those businesses which practice tax avoidance (50% of Fortune 500 firms) are part of the ‘lack of resources’ school districts now experience. 3) Proposition 13 must be re-evaluated because many firms avoid paying property taxes which support public school districts. 4) If KIPP school methods are as effective as demonstrated by the current data base, what does it take for public schools to adapt their ‘best practices’? Think of “Broken Promises: The Children left Behind in Silicon Valley Schools” as a starting point to address reforming California’s public schools in a manner that deals with issues such as ‘The Digital Gap’, income disparities’, real property assessment disparities, and accumulation of wealth while retaining the spirit of curiosity, creativity, imagination, insight and innovation which are at the heart of Silicon Valley. Let’s do what is possible to re-establish California’s schools as the envy of the world.

Occupying Gezi Park Aylin Bulutoglu SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR

Istanbul is one of the most populous cites in the world. I like city life but sometimes it is really overwhelming. Born and raised in Istanbul, I remember getting away from human traffic by visiting Gezi Park located in Taksim Square. It was definitely one of my favorite parks in Istanbul where you have a chance to escape from city crowds and be alone with nature. Last week, I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard on the news that the government is planning to convert one of the few remaining parks into military barracks and a shopping mall. Of course, just like me, many Turkish citizens got worried over the government’s decision to demolish Gezi Park. On May 28, 2013, a small group of people gathered at Istanbul’s Gezi Park. It initially started as a peaceful environmental sit-in, but police

violence against protestors triggered nationwide antigovernment demonstrations against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It has been only a week, but over 2,000 people were detained, many were injured, and two people have been killed, as gas and water cannons have been excessively used against people protesting. Erdogan was elected prime minister in 2002 as a leader of Islamic-rooted Justice and Development party. Erdogan defines himself as a democratic leader, but his actions and comments shows that he is far from being a democrat. “We will raise a religious generation,” Erdogan stated at a meeting last year in Ankara. Lately, the government passed legislation banning the advertisement of alcoholic beverages and their sale from 10:00pm to 6:00am. Also, the government banned kissing in public. Obviously, Erdogan’s government tries limiting citizens’ freedom by imposing strict Islamic laws.

Turkey is one of the few secular and democratic Muslim countries. I graduated high school in Turkey and I remember one of the first things I learned at school was that the Turkish constitution forbids the religious laws from dominating government. Gezi Park protest demonstrates that many Turkish citizens want government to obey the constitution and separate state and religion. Even though I live miles away from my home city, I try to follow the news in Turkey. I have seen many protests take place in Turkey, but Gezi Park is the most significant one. I have never seen my people that angry and frustrated before. Also, it is amazing to see how people from different backgrounds all come together and aim for only one thing: Democracy! I hope Erdogan realizes Turkey is a true democratic country and he can’t change it. Turkish citizens will not tolerate anti democratic rules and regulations.

Youth Camp Helps Empower Through Strengthening Self Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR International Youth Fellowship is an international nonprofit Christian organization that works with the youth to empower and reinforce the core values of the camp that deal with embracing and facing the challenges which come their way. Nancy Gonzales is a coordinator for the San Jose branch that is located on Curtner Ave. She reinforced the idea of the camps purpose by detailing some key features of the organization. Nancy recounts that change within yourself, and surroundings after facing challenges feel different. The IYF is designed to help children who have been exposed to alcohol, drugs and abuse. One of the core values of the organization is teach the children, regardless of circumstance, to take on their daily

challenges, some more daunting than others. Nonetheless Nancy references her own growth with the IYF as a stepping stone into being able to articulate in front of large crowds more efficiently and being sure about her own self within the larger context of the world. Nancy points out that the “one thing we do believe is to be able to be a leader in this world now that America is so diverse. Every culture is different in their traditions and the way they perceive the world. ” To her learning about the different nuances of a culture helps you understand where they come from. In the larger scale, this internationally regarded organization is built upon the idea of ensuring that the youth is not left behind. That their empowerment and will is positive regardless of their upbringing. They bring their culture and learn about how it is just as important as every

other one. This marks the IYF’s 3rd year having the camp in the United States while other countries have had it instated years earlier. Its initial offering was at UCLA for the 2010 inauguration. Since then there has been mayors, athletes and various other guest speakers who speak on the struggles they had to endure and the ways they weaved through the pressures of life and gained a foothold into their present positions. The adoption of an American based version of the program allows one of the most diverse countries in the world to create stronger, and more confident individuals in a time where policy does not always reflect the educational sector of the nation.

Credit Access for Stay-at-Home Spouses and Partners Expanded Jason Alderman PRACTICAL MONEY One of the pitfalls of Congress passing complicated, sweeping legislation is that sometimes provisions designed to protect one group unexpectedly create hardships for others. That’s what happened with 2009’s Credit Card Accountability Responsibility Disclosure (CARD) Act, which was hailed as legislation that would protect consumers from misleading credit practices. Among other things, the CARD Act requires that people under 21 must have an adult co-signer in order to open a credit account unless they can prove their ability to repay their account balance. This provision was designed to prevent young adults from assuming more debt than they can afford and then being unable to pay it off, thereby ruining their credit

standing. Then, in 2011 the Federal Reserve finalized rules around the CARD Act’s “ability to pay” provision. It stated that credit card issuers generally could only consider an applicant’s independent income or assets before issuing a new card or increasing a credit limit, not his or her access to the household’s overall income. An unintended consequence soon emerged: As a result of the ability-to-pay rule, many spouses or partners over age 21, who don’t work outside the home, suddenly found they were unable to open separate credit accounts in their own name, regardless of whether or not they had access to their working spouse/ partner’s income. Establishing one’s own credit history is crucial to gaining favorable interest rates and

all applicants, regardless of marital status.)

access to credit, especially when non-working spouses get divorced or their spouse dies unexpectedly. Thus many consumers (and their Congressional representatives) were upset. Their displeasure reached the ears of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Fast forward to October 2012, when the CFPB released a proposal that was expected to ease credit rules for stay-at-home spouses or partners. After six months of

public review, the CFPB issued a formal amendment to the ability-to-pay rule that essentially says credit card applicants who are at least 21 can factor in a third party’s income or assets when applying for credit card accounts if there’s a reasonable expectation they’ll be able to access those funds to make payments. (This includes income of a spouse or partner, although the rule applies to

Speaking of unintended consequences, however, remember that even though having at least one credit card or loan in your own name can help you build a strong credit history, it’s important to carefully manage all credit accounts on which you’re named – whether as an individual, cosigner or authorized user – to prevent damage to your credit score. Having a poor credit score can cost a small fortune over a lifetime. You’ll pay higher rates and have a harder time qualifying for mortgages, car loans and credit cards. To maintain – or improve – your credit score: Always pay all bills on time.

Never exceed credit limits. Try to keep your credit utilization ratio (the percentage of available credit you’re using) below 30 percent. Don’t automatically close older, unused accounts; 15 percent of your score is based on credit history. Each time you open a new account there’s a slight impact on your score, so avoid doing so in the months before a major purchase like a home or car. Bottom line: Make sure you have credit in your own name, in case you ever need to open a new account based on your own credit history. Just make sure you don’t overextend yourself or mismanage credit you currently have.

Groundbreaking Analysis Finds Marijuana Arrests Comprise Nearly Half of All Drug Arrests NEW YORK Black people are 3.7 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people despite comparable usage rates, according to a report released by the American Civil Liberties Union. The report also found that marijuana possession arrests now make up nearly half of all drug arrests, with police making over 7 million marijuana possession arrests between 2001 and 2010. “The War on Marijuana in Black and White: Billions of Dollars Wasted on Racially Biased Arrests” is the first-ever report to examine nationwide state and county marijuana arrest data by race. “The war on marijuana has disproportionately been a war

on people of color,” said Ezekiel Edwards, director of the ACLU Criminal Law Reform Project and one of the primary authors of the report. “State and local governments have aggressively enforced marijuana laws selectively against Black people and communities, needlessly ensnaring hundreds of thousands of people in the criminal justice system at tremendous human and financial cost.” The findings show that while there were pronounced racial disparities in marijuana arrests 10 years ago, they have grown significantly worse. In counties with the worst disparities, Blacks were as much as 30 times more likely to be arrested. The racial disparities exist in all regions of the U.S., as well as in both large

and small counties, cities and rural areas, and in both high- and low-income communities. Disparities are also consistently high whether Blacks make up a small or a large percentage of a county’s overall population. Despite the fact that a majority of Americans now support marijuana legalization, states spent an estimated $3.61 billion enforcing marijuana possession laws in 2010 alone. New York and California combined spent over $1 billion. Even though many police departments across the country have made enforcement a priority for the past decade, the aggressive enforcement of marijuana laws has failed to eradicate or even diminish the use of marijuana.

”The purpose of the exhibit is to tell the story, and plight, of the California grizzly bear which was atop the region’s ecosystem with a population of 20,000 when the first European settlers arrived in the late 1700s. Over the next 150 years, the California grizzly was killed to extinction by 1920. Californians both feared and respected the grizzly as exemplified in folklore, advertising and myths,” said Ken Middlebrook, curator at History San Jose.

Osvaldo Castillo EL OBSERVADOR The grizzly bear has had a special place in the history of California. It is on the state flag and even has theme park

rides named after it. Bear In Mind – The Story of the California Grizzly, is an exhibit that chronicles the history of the grizzly bear’s impact on the state of California and its people.

The animal was highly regarded to be included as a prominent symbol on the state flag. Visitors should leave with a better understanding of and appreciation for this magnificent animal and perhaps, may have a renewed outlook toward other native species, such as the California condor, that are on the brink of extinction. Exhibit Envoy provided the majority of the content for this travelling exhibit in partnership with The Bancroft Library, University of

“The aggressive policing of marijuana is time-consuming, costly, racially biased, and doesn’t work,” said Edwards. “These arrests have a significant detrimental impact on people’s lives, as well as on the communities in which they live. When people are arrested for possessing even tiny amounts of marijuana, they can be disqualified from public housing or student financial aid, lose or find it more difficult to obtain employment, lose custody of their child, or be deported.” The ACLU calls for states to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana, which it says would eliminate the unfair raciallyand community-targeted selective enforcement of marijuana laws. In addition, at a time when states are facing

Local items from History San Jose’s extensive collection are used to supplement the exhibit, including bear paw fragments that were excavated from the former Market Street Chinatown site in downtown San Jose. The exhibit is broken into four areas: Loss of the Griz-

budget shortfalls, taxing and regulating would allow them to save millions of dollars currently spent on enforcement while raising millions more in revenue – money that can be invested in community and public health programs, including drug treatment. If legalization is not possible, the ACLU recommends either depenalizing marijuana possession by removing all civil and criminal penalties or decriminalizing low-level marijuana possession, so that it becomes a civil offense. Finally, if decriminalization is not possible, the ACLU suggests deprioritizing police and prosecutorial enforcement of marijuana possession laws.

law enforcement to reform policing practices, including ending racial profiling as well as unconstitutional stops, frisks, and searches. It also recommends reforming state and federal funding streams and their performance measures that can incentivize police to make low-level drug arrests.

The tax-payer funded project is expected to open in 2015. The 3-story facility will include an urgent care center for both adults and children, as well as pediatric, OBGYN, behavioral health, and family medicine primary care services. SCVMC has been at the forefront of a growing national movement to implement medical homes, as evidence suggests they can improve patient health, reduce the risk of hospitalization and make more efficient use of resources. While the new health center is being built, the County is contracting with community partner Gardner Family Health Network to operate a temporary health center in the Mediplex Building, which is part of the old San Jose Medical Center property purchased by the County in 2010.

A call to restart San Jose’s affordable housing program Cinthia Rodriguez EL OBSERVADOR

we need to act further in a very aggressive way,” said Poncho Guevara, executive director, Sacred Heart. “If people don’t have a place to stay how are they going to work towards a better life for themselves, for their families, and for our community as a whole.”

Community organizations held a press conference demanding that the City Council take action on adopting a residential impact fee on developers to help pay for affordable housing in the city with America’s most expensive rental market. Impact fees are one-time charges applied to new development. They are also a form of land-use regulation designed to assure that communities maintain adequate levels of public facilities in the face of growth. Many cities in the Bay Area have adopted housing impact fees. Affordable housing supporters including Working Partnerships USA, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Sacred Heart Community Service, the Housing Trust of Silicon Valley are asking San Jose to do the same. The coalition is asking the city to do a study to see if new residential development like the new high rises or those new $3,000 apartments can be assessed a fee to help pay for affordable housing. To them, the

housing impact fees are an important way to rebuild affordable housing. “The abrupt demise of Redevelopment Agencies has devastated the ability to find affordable housing,” said Larry Stone, housing developer and county assessor. “San Jose has always been a leader in support of affordable housing and it needs to remain that leader.” Stone explained how the redevelopment agency was a critical component to funding affordable housing in San Jose and throughout California. He fully supports the impact fee because it is the right thing to do for the community. “This is a disaster that continues to roll in our community and we can’t deny the fact that

Like Guevara, Regina Moreno believes stability goes hand in hand with housing. Moreno is a single parent, raising three children with two part time jobs. She is living at her mother’s house and is on multiple waiting lists for low-income housing. She is struggling to find a rental unit because she doesn’t make enough, since most places she has applied for requires you to make the triple amount of the rent. The low-income housing units ask for too many requirements, making it harder for her to get accepted. She’d really like a safe and decent area with good schools. “I am one of those people that just wants a better living. I work everyday. I’m not on any social services. I’m just working hard,” said Regina Moreno, who’s been on the Section 8 waitlist for eight years.

American Idiot: A portrait of the Broken Dreams of Youth Richard Rivas SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR

Tuesday, June 4th, was the opening night at the Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose for “American Idiot”, a thrilling musical that screams and emotionally kicks you in a good way, a musical based on the popular pop-punk album by Green Day. Now pop on Broadway wouldn’t be surprising, but how about punk on Broadway? Definitely, and with lots of it. The music is aggressive and bold with its in-yourface attitude, not to mention loud. The moment the curtain rises you’re already pulled in and introduced to Johnny (played by Bay Area native Alex Nee) shouting “I don’t wanna be an American Idiot!” with its signature guitar riff playing. Like the album, this tale is set in the “recent past” when the Bush Administration was ‘high and mighty’. “Either you are

with us, or with the terrorists.” George Bush’s voice echoes as the banter of news broadcasts, political satire, and 7-Elevens flicker on the various screens scattered all over the set; Designed by the brilliant Christine Jones, this simple setup morphs and alters from a stoners basement to a bus taking them away from suburbia to a messy city apartment then a military hospital. As the main protagonists are introduced, Johnny is joined by Will and Tunny, and the trio is a bunch of drinking, smoking at-homebums in suburbia dreaming of a bigger, better life. It gives nothing away to say their stories, taking place with the track-for-track listing of the original album (plus a few mixtures of songs), that take them on disparate paths, filled with tragedy and pain. The trio decide that enough is enough and that they should start living their lives the way that they want to. Johnny gets them their tickets out of there, but as soon

oin; and Tunny is a soldier fighting in the war in Iraq. Soon after their conflicts start intensifying when Will’s girlfriend leaves him, taking the baby with her; Tunny gets injured on the battlefield; and Johnny goes through a breakdown. The plot and emotional impact of “American Idiot” makes you think about society and what we see in our daily lives, presenting realistic situations that are entirely possible through the eyes of three twentysomething year olds in both the grace and the awkwardness of energy-generating young peoples.

Alex Nee (Johnny) and Trent Saunders (St. Jimmy) in “American Idiot” (Photo by John Daughtry).

as they’re at the door, we come into contact with the first conflict. Will, who was supposed to come along, is forced to stay home when he discovers that his girlfriend is pregnant. Lost, alone, and nowhere close to ready for the responsibilities of being a father, he slips into the couch, drink in one hand and dope

in the other, as his branch sets off. Johnny and Tunny set off for the city, only to find out that it turns out to be just a bigger version of the place they were so eager to leave behind. The boys discover that while a unruly and bad tempered 21stcentury America may not

offer any easy paths to happiness, the deeper problem is that they have no idea of how to believe in themselves. After frustrating attempts to pull briefs-clad Tunny out of bed, Johnny stomps out of the apartment, guitar in hand, and sets out for the city streets, vaguely longing for love and achievement in life, introducing the second conflict. He eventually hooks up with a girl, but falls more powerfully under the spell of a gothic drug pusher, St. Jimmy, manifested from his desperate need for a “friend”. The third conflict finally comes up as Tunny mostly just stays in bed, remote in hand, and falls into the overall idealistic of the “American Idiot” with a pageant of propaganda about military heroism on the television, set to the song “Favorite Son.” By the time the song’s over, he’s already enlisted and shipped off to Iraq; And there, our second and third branch trails off. Months fly by and Will’s child is born; Johnny is living with the girl of his dreams, only to be pulled back and forth by St. Jimmy and her-

All in all, the music is thrilling: charged with urgency, rhythms that sometimes morph and evolve midsong, move from in-your-face to ‘back it up a second’, befitting the tone of each song. Even if you are unfamiliar with Green Day’s music, you are likely to walk away from this show humming one of the guitar riffs or choruses. But the emotional charge that the show generates is as memorable as the music. It jolts you right back into the dizzying roller coaster of young adulthood, capturing a piercing intensity that even a few of the older members in the audience had to leave for a few moments. Yes, there are some four-letter words, alcohol and drug use, but it’s appropriate ‘within the context of the show’. I did find the characters super engaging. The standby screens that start in the beginning, varying, but sending the same message and cry for help, “PLEASE HOLD ON”. Overall the musical “American Idiot” is dead on portraying that moment in life when everything seems possible, and nothing seems worth doing, or maybe it’s the other way around.

Fads that Should’ve Never…

What Women Want— In A Swimsuit

(NAPS)

Women, it seems, would rather be heard than seen…in a swimsuit, that is. In fact, according to a recent survey of women, conducted on behalf of Lands’ End, more women (66 percent) would be selfconscious appearing in public in a swimsuit than they would be giving a speech. The survey also found what women do like about a swimsuit: Ninety-eight percent said proper fit is essential. Women confess to feeling “exposed” when wearing a swimsuit in a crowd, but the survey also found that only 20 percent are concerned about the opinion of the general public.

Here are a few of the ideas women have about what to wear for sunning and swimming: Juan Carlos Miranda SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR We all have our own style, the things that we know we look best in, those things that make us look hot and secure about ourselves and boost our confidence level up a couple notches. I mean, we have only been living with ourselves for so long. Shouldn’t we already know what we look good in?--heck, who am I kidding? Regardless, if we know what we look good in or not, there are certain trends that should have never come into style. However some idiot thought it’d be a great idea to bring regular folks--like you and I--some stupid styles just to, I strongly believe, laugh at ourselves for wanting to look good in them (seriously, you should really reconsider wearing those skinny jeans!). Since we don’t all posses the same body type or shape not all trends look as hot or cool on all of us, and that’s okay. However, we should really pay attention to the looks that really flatter our shape and enhance our assets and rid the ones that don’t.

Here are the looks I believe do not flatter anyone regardless of their shape. Afterall, there are styles that should have never come to be. Cropped Pants. Unless you want to look like Pee-wee Herman those pants should belong nowhere near you. They are unflattering and ridiculous to say the least. Saggy Pants. Pants below your butt have no place anywhere, unless you’re trying to let everyone know you’re available for...well, I think you get the picture. Booty Shorts. I’m usually all for showing your toned gams, however unless those toned gams come with a toned booty. I’d really hate for you to make a fool of yourself. Booty shorts only look good on girls with perky bootys. Anything other than that, well, let’s just say you’re fooling yourself. Uggs. These are the only type of shoes that have ever made me first think “WTF were they thinking?” Seriously, you might think they are cute and comfortable but unless you want to look like Sasquatch’s cousin then you

really have it wrong honey. Flip Flops. Now, let’s get something straight. I’m all in for the comfort and ease flip flops have to offer, but I’m very, very against anyone wearing them just about everywhere they go. I mean, WTF do people think when wearing these at a restaurant or movie theater? There is a time and place where to wear these and those are not in public places, people. Skinny Jeans. Okay, so this one it’s kind of iffy. I really like skinny jeans and the illusion they offer. However depending on your shape they can either look totally cool or totally not, so I’d say this; ditch the skinny jeans if you are a girl with a wide torso and smaller frame below, or if you’re a big girl with thick legs, they are just not flattering. So next time you want to try the latest fad in fashion I want you to do one thing and one thing only. Think about yourself and your..not your well being, but what looks good on you because when you feel good in what you’re wearing, you exude happiness, confidence and style.

On Blu-Ray & DVD Universal City, California Jason Bateman (Horrible Bosses) and Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) lead an all-star cast in this hilarious blockbuster hit. Unlimited funds have allowed Diana (McCarthy) to live it up on the outskirts of Orlando. There’s only one glitch: she’s financing her shopping sprees with an ID stolen from Sandy Patterson (Bateman), an accounts rep who lives halfway across the U.S. With only one week to hunt down the con artist before his world implodes, the real Sandy Patterson is forced to extreme measures to clear his name.

In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—becomes legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It’s one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin’s (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide.

The Internship

But, gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group of the nation’s most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of re-invention.

Graba “El Buki” a dúo con Celedón “Y ahora te vas” en género vallenato Absolute Beginners Records 5/5 Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR The recurring folksy themes in Soledad Velez’s Wild Fishing (Absolute Beginners Records) settles the deepest emotions eluding us in our modern world filled with synthesizers, gridlock traffic and apps that beep and instantly inform us of everything and anything. The title itself treads away from “new age” fishing, no large expensive boat, no GPS tracking device or radar to help find trout. Wild Fishing is organic pop indie folk. Mouthful, but its a type of music that is too edgy to be just folk, yet too intertwined into the sense of nature and personal feeling to be just pop.

The best part is that although this may seem like a low-fi project from a sleepy town on the east coast of the United States, it’s actually a Spain-based young woman who’s originally from Chile. Her label’s bio describes her as “the lover that Nick Cave always desired so that he could give up the world in favor of her company. Her lyrics go no further than that which she repeats as an exorcism with her heart in her hand. They aren’t necessary. What she has to say isn’t as much in her words as in how she expresses them.”

by the fact that she both writes and plays guitar for this album, fitting into the shoe of the classic “singer-songwriter” but only in the title. There are tracks that set a mood likened to looking up at the sky when it’s light grey and you’re glad you have a cozy sweater on. There’s also tracks that invigorate the ears into thinking you’re in a 2 person concert in her living room, perhaps lucky enough to have a cup of coffee or tea while bobbing your head to the more melodically energetic tunes like “Hug Me”, which is reminiscent of a Velvet Underground song.

On Wild Fishing she sounds like she’s traversed all sense of emotion and worldly views. This is made more so evident

These soundscapes routinely divide their time between allegorical treks through the woods and serene, soft-spoken truths while sitting on the couch. Velez’s lyrics provide a trail for the music to follow, not the other way around. “Black Light in the Forest” is teeming with influences of folk, blues, country and the vocalization of Feist and Janis Joplin combined. Her accent is nearly present, but adds a touch of international spirit which never makes you feel like you’re in your own backyard exploring, but does make you comfortable exploring the most alien of woods.
