Chávez's march from Delano, California to Sacramento to make visible the demands of Mexican and Filipino agricultural workers. During that time, the African American reverend was preparing the March of the Poor to Washington in coordination with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

D

Por fortuna tenemos el legado de King y Chávez para mostrarnos el camino para reclamar justicia y dignidad: de manera firme y apasionada pero pacífica. wo years before he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, the African-American leader of the civil rights struggle, the Rev. Martin Luther King sent a telegram to the advocate for farmworker rights, Mexican-American César Chavez. "As brothers in the fight for equality, I extend my hand of camaraderie and goodwill ... Our separate struggles are really one: a fight for freedom, dignity, and humanity ... We are together with you in spirit and in the determination that our dreams of a better tomorrow will materialize.” King wrote the message touched by

This week, fifty-four years after that telegram, a group of young Latinos marched in front of the municipal building in El Paso, Texas, to demand justice for the murder of George Floyd, but also for the death of the mentally ill Hispanic Erik Salas, Sánchez, killed by the police at his home in 2015. His message was clear: "Justice for George, Justice for Erik, Justice for All." Ten years after the death of Martin Luther King, inspired by the pacifist spirit of the African American leader, César Chávez said that few have experienced the satisfaction of dedicating a life to the fight for justice through non-violent means. "MLK was one of his unique servers and we learned many lessons from him that have guided us," he wrote. The solidarity relationship between Chávez and King has been documented in a showcase of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the American capital. A short distance from the museum, on 16th Street in Washington DC that leads to the White House, there is a gigantic mural on the asphalt with the legend in yellow letters "Black Lives Matter". There is no doubt that King and Chávez's egalitarian dreams have registered tortuously slow progress. It is true that the United States elected and re-elected its first African-American president and that the protests over the death of George Floyd are overwhelmingly white. But the uneven impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its health and economic consequences among African-Americans and Latinos, and the disproportionate number of both minorities who are victims of excessive use of force and imprisonment, confirm that we are joined by serious challenges. That requires inclusive, urgent, and substantive legal reforms. But it is not enough. It requires a cultural shift in racial sensitivity that begins in every home, in every classroom, and in the entertainment industry. MLK shared the idea that the arc of the moral universe is huge but always leans toward justice. It is true. Only sometimes you do have to give it some help because that inclination has been slow and hasty. Fortunately, we have the legacy of King and Chávez to show us the way to demand justice and dignity: in a firm and passionate, but peaceful way. For more information visit www.laredhispana.com.

n uncertain times, there is one source of comfort we can all agree upon, and it is the unconditional love provided by our beloved four-legged friends. Pets are family and are there for us when we need it most. And when tragedy strikes a family member, whether through a natural disaster, domestic abuse, a health problem or job loss, we do everything we can to help. Bringing animals out of crisis and into care and strengthening the bond between humans and animals is at the heart of everything RedRover does. Through emergency sheltering, disaster relief services, financial assistance and humane education programs, we are able to unite our community of pet lovers to help make the world a better and safer place for pets and their people. No matter the crisis, people and their pets can stay together whenever possible, or be reunited when separation is unavoidable. In the current time of economic and social uncertainty, there are a variety of programs that can help people and pets who are struggling, including: Urgent veterinary care grants The RedRover Relief program offers financial assistance and resources to pet owners struggling with economic hardship when pets are facing life-threatening emergencies. These grants are intended to fill a small gap in funding that is keeping an animal from receiving urgent veterinary care. In addition to financial support, case managers are there to provide emotional support and guidance throughout the application process. Domestic violence assistance program As few as 10% of domestic violence shelters in the U.S. allow pets onsite. And reports show that nearly half of domestic violence victims won't leave their abusers if they can't bring their pet with them. RedRover and Purina have partnered to create the Purple Leash Project to help expand pet-friendly domestic violence shelters across the United States. Purple Leash Project grants, an extension of RedRover's Safe Housing program, enable

shelters to build on-site housing for pets. Adding pet-friendly spaces to domestic violence shelters can save the lives of people and their pets - and allow them to begin their healing process together. Recognizing there is no one-size-fits-all solution to help domestic violence survivors and their pets, there are additional types of grants for shelters to house pets offsite or partner with organizations like pet shelters to care for pets while a domestic violence survivor is in shelter. Survivors can apply for direct support through the Safe Escape program, which provides up to 90 days of pet boarding to individuals leaving abuse. COVID boarding grants The new "Emergency Boarding" grant program helps animals who need temporary boarding while their owners are ill due to the COVID-19 virus. This grant will cover the cost of up to two (2) weeks of boarding while a pet owner is hospitalized, or if the pet owner is recovering at home and unable to care for their pet or place him or her with a friend or neighbor. Resources Beyond providing grants and support, RedRover has also assembled a list of COVID-19 emergency resources for pets and people with links to: * Pet food and equine resources to connect pet owners to pet food pantries and hay donations; * Other financial assistance programs such as low- and no-cost spay and neuter, as well as transportation services and foster resources; * Resources for parents looking for engaging, at-home activities to do with their children, as well as educators who are looking for resources to use with their remote students; * Emergency planning for pets including the COVID-19 Preparedness for Pets PDF, RedRover Pet Disaster Preparedness tips and an Emergency Pet Caregiving Agreement. With so many struggling right now, these resources will help keep your family safe during the pandemic, and beyond.

IERRE, S.D.

IERRE, S.D. -- The killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis has amplified calls for white people to openly discuss systemic racism. Those calls include adults having talks with schoolage children. Protesters demanding racial justice say providing children with a better understanding of the history behind racial inequalities can help to eliminate such problems in the future. Mary McCorkle, president of the South Dakota Edu-

cation Association, says she thinks both parents and teachers can play a role in sparking conversations. She says classrooms provide a good setting since many students are curious about the news they are exposed to. "Students are, again, depending upon their age, are very much aware of what's going on or if they're younger students, they may have questions," she points out. McCorkle says it's important to let students lead the conversations, and for teachers and parents to follow up with questions. And she says the situation also creates opportuni-

ties for school districts to enhance their curriculum to have a more accurate portrayal of the nation's history when it comes to systemic racism. McCorkle says she hopes the awareness will also lead to the hiring of more educators of color, which she says can help students from diverse backgrounds feel more connected in the classroom. "How do we begin to help grow the number of educators of color so that students they see, they see themselves reflected in the world around them?" she states. According to federal data, South Dakota is among the 30 states that have a shortage of bilingual teachers. McCorkle says this issue is a top priority for her organization as a way to help shape a more robust learning environment in classrooms across the state.

JUNE -DEC SAN PEDRO S UARE

orking to survive is a reality for most Californians, especially those of us supporting young children or aging parents. And with that, it's unavoidable that at some point we'll need time off work to care for a family member in need. Yet, as evidenced by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many Californians don't have access to vital programs that help balance the evolving responsibilities of career and caregiving. One policy that is particularly critical - in times of crisis, and not - is Paid Family Leave. Not only can a paid leave policy protect families who need to care for a seriously ill family member, it can give working parents the opportunity to bond with their newborn child. And researchers across the world agree: Bonding time with a parent gives a newborn baby their best chance at good health and future success. Use of Paid Family Leave is even associated with higher rates of breastfeeding and reduced rates of infant mortality. Of 41 developed nations, the United States is the only country that doesn't provide universal paid leave. Recognizing that parent-child bonding is a developmental imperative, other developed nations offer workers an average of six months of job-protected leave upon the birth or adoption of a new child. As first in the nation, California enacted a Paid Family Leave policy of its own in 2004. The insurance program, paid entirely by employees through their automatic payroll deductions, provides workers with 60 or 70% of their regular wages for up to six

weeks. To their surprise, many California employers - who again, do not contribute a cent to the program - have benefited greatly from Paid Family Leave. Use of the program has improved employee morale and productivity, reduced staff turnover and promoted business growth. Unfortunately, the full potential of California's children, employees and employers is largely untapped. Far too many families have been forced to choose between their career and caregiving. In 2017, only half of eligible mothers and one-quarter of eligible fathers took Paid Family Leave. That's because the 15-year-old policy framework leaves an overwhelming portion of the population behind. Without explicit job protection, many workers are too afraid to use Paid Family Leave for fear of losing their job or being demoted when they return. In addition, many families would be unable to pay for basic needs with a 30 or 40% pay cut. As the fifth largest economy in the world, California can certainly afford to better protect families and invest in the future of our children by improving Paid Family Leave. To make this urgent need a reality, a growing number of organizations have joined a statewide "Strong Leave for Strong Families" campaign. The new campaign works to mobilize Californians to ensure their voices are heard around proposals that arise during California's budget and legislative process. The simple request of campaign members? A Paid Family Leave program that serves all Californians.

n just five days, Sumita Batra, CEO of Ziba Beauty, went from planning the opening of her 14th beauty salon in Southern California to laying off her whole team of more than 100 employees so they could apply for unemployment benefits. “For me it’s been like losing a member of my family,” said Batra in a news conference organized by Ethnic Media Services, in which experts discussed the state of small businesses, most of which founded by minorities and highly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We offer an intimate and personal service. I can’t remove your eyebrow hair without touching you,” Batra explained referring to eyebrow threading, a technique that originated in India and that Ziba Beauty pioneered in the United States. “I’m not comfortable risking the health of my team or that of my clients. I’ve decided not to reopen the stores, at the risk of losing the 33-year-old brand that my mother and I built with our own hands,” added Batra. Her mother, who is over 70, now suffers from arthritis. Ziba Beauty closed all its stores on March 13, leaving 45,000 clients without service. Since then Batra has had to pay salaries, vacation back pay and late rents from her own pocket. After many calls and paperwork, Batra was able to access the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which offers loans from federal government stimulus funds. But only 12 per cent of Afro-American and Latino businesses and 25 per cent of AsianAmerican businesses, have been able to access the PPP, approved by Congress in April in a $350 billion stimulus package. Although the aim of the program was to help small businesses with fewer than 500 employees to survive the pandemic, the funds ran out in just two weeks as hotel chains, restaurants and even big businesses with risk capital benefited from the money. “It wasn’t a fair fight,” said Charles Phillips, philanthropist and a Class A director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FED). “All the money went to the big banks.” Phillips explained that small businesses don’t have relationships with banking giants like JP Morgan or Bank of America, which have the oiled machinery to automatically fill out applications, receive government money and satisfy their big clients. For micro-enterprises, PPP loans must be

by unscrupulous agents, who asked them for money in return for filling out the applications. In addition, the PPP stipulates that 75% of the loan must be used to cover paychecks and there are companies whose operating costs are much higher than the salaries.

“The application process is more complicated and now the Fed is providing more guidance and the CDFI are learning the rules,” said Philips.

“Collateral warrantees or tax returns are not necessary now. It’s been easier in the second round,” said Philips. “But we still have reasons to worry. We need more economic stimuli, and there are more people acknowledging that, both in the House as

Sixty billion dollars of that were set aside to be distributed by smaller banks with less than $50 billion in assets. That has allowed 324 CDFIs to participate this time and to reduce loan amounts from an average of $260,000 to $115,000, which leads to access by small businesses to the money. Other barriers, explained Philips, are, for example, that more than 90% of AfroAmerican-owned businesses do not produce documentation such as W2 or 1099 forms or they just cannot afford the luxury of requesting loans that they will not be able to repay later. Even within the Latino community, people have already been swindled

well as in the Senate.” In the last few weeks, Congress approved four bipartisan laws, two of them aimed additional funds to the PPP for a total of $300 billion, according to Representative Ted Lieu, of California’s 33rd Congressional District. “We (the democrats) fought hard so that the second round of funding would be accessible to businesses with less than 20 employees,” said Lieu, whose immigrant parents started a business with no idea of what a loan or a chamber of commerce were or how the government worked. “The challenge is that the CDFIs and the

In addition to the problems minorities face in accessing these loans, historically, businesses founded by women only obtain 2% of risk capital funds. Shelly Collins Kapoor, founding partner of Shatter Fund, a fund that invests in the initial stage of companies founded by women entrepreneurs, shared the number as she warned of what could happen in a post-COVID era. “In a survey we took among our clients, we found that a third had to lay off their employees and more than half had no access to capital and had to close down their businesses,” said Kapoor, who is also a member of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s entrepreneur task force. Around 12.3 million businesses across the country are woman-owned. They employ nine million people and generate $1.7 trillion in income. “If women continue expanding their businesses, we have the chance to increase our GDP by $500 billion,” said Collins. The businesswoman warned that the pandemic cannot let what happened in World War II to happen again: “women roll up their sleeves during a crisis and when it passes, her work is forgotten,” she said referring to the number of women who are essential workers. In the last month, Batra of Ziba Beauty has had to reinvent her business and now offers a line of “essential COVID kits” that include KN95 face masks, hand disinfectant, alcohol wipes, toilet paper and gloves that were part of the inventory in her salons. “I had no idea of how to do online business or how to manage inventory. I didn’t even know what a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) was,” Batra said. Today her sales do not make up even 10% of her previous income, but she is sure that if aesthetic services of her kind return very soon, they will only contribute to the spread of COVID-19. “I’ve discovered how by using existing technology for medical sterilization, I can keep my salons sterile, but what I don’t know is how to keep clients sterile so they don’t bring the virus to the salon,” said Batra. “When I discover that, then I might become a millionaire, because that’s the question we’re all asking ourselves,” she concluded.

EALDSBURG, Calif.

n short, not so good. Global Forest Watch, a project of the non-profit World Resources Institute (WRI) which uses satellite data to track global forest loss, found that the world lost some 3.8 million hectares of tropical primary forest (defined as forests of native trees undisturbed by human activities) in 2019—equivalent to one soccer field every six seconds and an area about the size of Switzerland in total. One particularly nasty side effect of all this forest loss is the release of more than two billion tons of carbon dioxide, the leading greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere as the trees came down in 2019. (To put that into context, this is more emissions than caused by all of the vehicles on the road in the United States during the same 12-month stretch.) The tropical primary forest loss in 2019 is the third highest amount in recorded history, behind only 2016 and 2017. While deforestation is an issue everywhere, it is particularly problematic in the tropics where the majority of the world’s biodiversity lives. Another leading conservation group, WWF, points out that some 17 percent of the forest across the Amazon has been cut down over the last 50 years, mostly to make room for cattle ranching— so we can enjoy our steaks and burgers. The group warns that if nothing is done to stop it, some of the world’s most iconic and biologically diverse forest landscapes could be lost to deforestation, including primary habitat for iconic wildlife species like orangutans, tigers and elephants. “The hot spots are located in the Amazon, the Atlantic Forest and Gran Chaco, Borneo, the Cerrado, Choco-Darien, the Congo Basin, East Africa, Eastern Australia, Greater Mekong, New Guinea, and Sumatra.” reports WWF. “Up to 420 million acres of forest could be lost between 2010 and 2030 in

these ‘deforestation fronts’ if current trends continue.” Brazil suffered the largest total primary forest loss of all in 2019, with deforestation for agriculture and other new land uses increasing rapidly through that country’s vast stretches of Amazon rainforest. Meanwhile, neighboring Bolivia experienced the largest surge in primary tropical forest loss, where rampaging wildfires, most likely set intentionally to clear land for farming, reduced 80 percent more tree cover than in previous years. On the bright side, Global Forest Watch reports that primary forest loss was reduced significantly in Indonesia, where a recently imposed government moratorium on clearing land for palm oil plantations—along with beefed up enforcement—has reduced annual forest loss to levels not seen for 15 years (before the palm oil craze swept the region). Primary tropical forest loss was also down some 50 percent in both Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire. What’s the solution? Frances Seymour of WRI tells The New York Times that she’d like to see the international community address the problem through economic incentives that encourage forest protection. She adds that governments should focus on preventing forest burning, increasing monitoring and enforcement to stop encroachment while providing the poor with alternatives to forest exploitation. n resumen, no tan bueno.

venues in the capital says. "Are local tourists going to save the season? No, but they will cushion and reduce expenses and we hope to be able to balance the results by the end of the year," says Noureddine Beyrakdar, CEO of the Carlton, a hotel founded in 1926 and located on the central avenue of Habib Bourguiba.

The 82-room art deco hotel, which has had only three clients in its first 24 hours, has barely stopped during the lockdown, after becoming home to healthcare workers and then getting everything in place for its reopening.

"Aside from social distance measures and in-depth disinfection of knobs and little else, all other (hygiene requirements) were already followed. The difficult thing is to train staff who are not accustomed to certain reflexes with customers to avoid the contact expected of hospitality, which is a social environment. Now it has become almost cold," he adds.

unisia - Spurred by its inclusion in the top post-Covid-19 era destinations in Forbes magazine, Tunisia has embarked on a plan to transform and promote a sector that is key to its fragile economy which has been mired in a stubborn crisis since 2015.

Despite the Government's efforts, Beyrakdar believes that tourism, which represents at least 14 percent of the country's GDP with some 400,000 direct and indirect jobs, is not valued fairly when compared to the agricultural or industrial sectors.

Bolstered by the fact the coronavirus outbreak is deemed under control - according to official date there have been 49 deaths and 1,087 infections to date - the government has launched the Tunisia Prepared and Safe campaign to attract tourists after many have avoided the country following a chain of terrorist attacks that five years ago killed 72 people, 60 of them foreign tourists.

After a strict three month-lockdown, hotels, restaurants, and museums reopened doors at 50 percent capacity and amid strict hygiene and safety measures, on Thursday. Borders are expected to open by 27 June, although a lack of information over whether travelers will have to quarantine upon arrival has deterred many companies from setting their hopes too high for the summer season with many convinced this will be a year of national tourism. Lofti Hamadi, head of the Roof top bar and restaurant at the Hotel Dar El Jeld, in the heart of the Medina, says returning to work will not result in profits but an attempt to cover the losses incurred and guarantee the salary of its nearly 40 employees. The manager is concerned that the opening of borders is premature: "perhaps we will save the season and return to confinement later." "Local tourism has always been a missed opportunity, despite the fact that Tunisians are big consumers and lovers of good food. The strategy needs to be redirected. It is better to have cash registers full of dinars than empty currency safes," the businessman with more than a decade’s experience in running trendy

"We sell leisure and during this crisis, people hold onto their money because they think it is not the time, they have other priorities," says Neji Ben Sadok, owner of the Goa Private Beach restaurant and nightclub. Ben Sadok, like most hoteliers, thinks the time has come to shift from an all-inclusive mass tourism model that has dominated the sector so far. "We need tourists who do not stay in hotels, where they are offered everything and where they are told that if they leave, they are not safe. Sometimes you ask them what they know about the country and they have only seen the airport, the highway, and the hotel," the businessman, who is not optimistic, complains. Last year, the sector managed to stay afloat with nine million visitors and $ 18.6 billion in foreign exchange revenue. The Tunisian government seems intent on diversifying beyond beach and spa breaks by boosting tourism to alternative destinations such as the southern desert - which straddles 30 percent of Tunisian land- or the 2,000 archaeological sites. For the moment though, it has proven difficult for these destinations to compete with nearly 1,200 kilometers of coastline.
