Official notification from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) states that students with J-1 and M-1 visas who are enrolled in schools that operate entirely online may not remain in the United States. Likewise, the State Department will not issue visas to students interested in those schools that are processing from outside the United States for the next school semester. If educational institutions offer a hybrid model - a mix of in-person classes and online classes - foreign students will only be allowed to take more than one class, or three credit hours, online. ICE warned that those students who do not abide by the new regulations may face immigration consequences, including the start of the process of removal from the country. At least 8% of a grouping of 1,000 US universities monitored by The Chronicle of Higher Education plans to offer only online classes, 65% will offer in-person classes and 23% will have the option of a hybrid model, so that ICE's action may affect tens of thousands of young people. In all cases, students must continue paying their school fees if they wish to obtain an official certificate. But if a high percentage choose to drop out of education at a U.S. institution, a massive stampede could affect the sustainability of many U.S. universities. etting proper nutrition can be challenging for everyone, but especially as we age for a variety of reasons, including changing tastes, physical or dental conditions, and lack of access to healthy foods. “It’s critical that people of all ages get proper nutrition, but especially seniors, and particularly now with the spread of COVID-19 in the United States,” says Dr. Gina Conflitti, chief medical officer with Cigna’s Medicare Advantage business, which offers Medicare plans in 18 states and the District of Columbia. “Good nutrition helps older adults stay active and vital, and can help them stave off or better manage chronic conditions.” Cigna provides the following nutrition tips: • Make healthy choices. Add plenty of fruits and vegetables to your plate for colorful, nutrient-rich, fiber-filled meals. Add flavor with spices and herbs instead of salt. Stay hydrated with plenty of water. Even light exercise can stimulate appetite and strengthen bones and muscles. • Consult your doctor. If your appetite is changing or you’re losing weight, talk to your primary care physician. There could be an underlying reason for these changes. For instance, your medication might be affecting your appetite. Or maybe you’re dealing with depression. Your doctor can work with you to identify possible causes. • Adapt to changing tastes. There are a number of ways to change your eating habits to improve your nutrition, from eating more frequent, smaller meals to trying new foods and cooking styles. One-third of hospital patients are malnourished at admission and poor nutrition increases their risk of having to return to the hospital after being released. Some older adults with limited resources may qualify for assistance with food purchases through programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). If you aren’t eligible for this type of assistance, you can still find ways to save on food bills, including asking for senior discounts, using coupons, having a store discount card and buying store brands. This is the case of Teresa Interiano, caregiver of On Lok Lifeways, with more than 24 years of experience caring for the most fragile adults. Creo que una de las cosas interesantes para nosotros fue que pudimos entablar una relación con él durante el período de más de dos años que trabajamos en el documental. Ya te imaginarás que nuestro “Big Bird” pasó a ser nuestra tía o tío fabuloso. Además estuvimos con él al final de su vida que es una cosa extraordinaria porque somos las personas que tuvimos el privilegio de pasar dos años con él.

e acuerdo muy bien que crecí viendo el programa de noticias en español “Primer Impacto” con mi familia y el silencio que predominaba en el cuarto cuando pasaban al segmento diario con Walter Mercado, el astrólogo místico y psíquico quien vestía con capas elaboradas e inculcaba esperanza y amor a sus palabras cuando hablaba con el público alrededor del mundo. La carrera de más de 50 años de Mercado se apaciguó, cuando desapareció del aire en el 2006. ¿Por qué? Bueno, si a uno le interesa, es suficiente investigar un poco y vigilar las noticias sobre celebridades hispanohablantes para descubrir que un impedimento legal con su director – en quién confiaba plenamente - terminó destruyendo su carrera. Tardaría años en recuperar la propiedad de su identidad e incluso de su propio nombre. Pero yo, como muchas otras personas, a mediados de los 2000 simplemente seguimos con nuestra vida y los recuerdos de este hombre se instalaron en la memoria de largo plazo de nuestras mentes. Para el nuevo documental de Netflix “Mucho Mucho Amor: La Leyenda de Walter Mercado”, los directores Cristina Costantini, Kareem Tabsch y Alex Fumero – fans millenials de Mercado – hicieron una crónica de la trayectoria asombrosa de su vida; desde su niñez en un Puerto Rico rural, hasta aparecer en el televisor de millones de espectadores quienes lo admiraban y anhelaban un pedazo de positividad del astrólogo con sus capas incrustadas de joyas. Hasta el día de su muerte en noviembre del 2019, Mercado vivió una vida tranquila en Puerto Rico, rodeado de sus seres queridos. Aun así, tenía muchas ganas de regresar frente a sus fans. La producción “Mucho Mucho Amor: La Leyenda de Walter Mercado” lo pondrá de regreso frente a sus fans que lo amaban y se presentará con aquellos que aún no conocen a este ícono andrógino, a través de sus propias palabras y de las palabras de la gente que lo conocía mejor. En la siguiente entrevista, los directores nos contarán sus experiencias y sus intentos para capturar la esencia y lo maravilloso que era Walter Mercado, así como la relación que tuvieron con él al final de su vida. “Mucho Mucho Amor: La Leyenda de Walter Mercado ya se puede ver en Netflix. Quisiera empezar preguntando ¿Qué fue lo que les motivó a ustedes tres para que se juntaran e hicieran una película? ¿De dónde sacaron la inspiración para enfocarse en Walter Mercado? Alex Fumero: Todos crecimos viendo a Walter con nuestros abuelos quienes nos hacían callar enérgicamente cuando Walter

Cuando empezaron a trabajar en esto ¿Cuál era la perspectiva de intentar contar su historia y de averiguar dónde se encontraba desde que salió del aire? ¿Cómo afectó su muerte la historia general que intentaron contar?

apareció en la televisión. Así nos dejó una impresión duradera. Después cuando crecimos, nos dimos cuenta de que se trataba de un héroe excepcional en el mundo latino, ya sabes, por su identidad y su variabilidad de género antes de que esto se volviera popular. Cuando conocí a Kareem, lo primero que hablamos fue de Walter, y Kareem me contó que iría a una venta de bienes dónde Walter había puesto en venta algunas de sus capas, a lo que comenté: “Alguien debería hacer un documental sobre él.” Entonces él dijo: “Bueno, por eso voy a ir. O sea, voy a ir a comprar capas pero también voy a ver si puedo conocer a alguien de su familia.” Y cuando él y yo acordamos una hora para hablar sobre quién había conocido, Cristina me habló media hora antes de esa llamada y me dijo: “Hey, me dijeron que estás obsesionada con Walter Mercado. Quiero hacer una película sobre él.” Ella y yo éramos colegas de trabajo en Fusion, así que le dije, “esto es muy raro pero sabes, tengo esa llamada en 30 minutos… al mejor deberíamos hacerlo juntos los tres.” Y todo lo demás es historia. Me preguntaba si en algún momento ¿Walter admitió o declaró que él estaba consciente de su estatus como héroe o ícono positivo de la comunidad LGBTQ? Kareem: Sí, yo creo que el sí estaba consciente de la influencia que tenía en la comunidad Queer. Especialmente en los eventos en Miami hay un público LGBTQ muy grande que habló con él y que le dijo cuánto lo amaban y que lo veían como una inspiración muy grande. Así que definitivamente estaba consciente de ello. Walter conocía su alcance. No necesariamente hablaba de sí mismo en el sentido de que era una influencia y un pionero para la gente, pero sí estaba consciente de ello. ¿Cómo se sintió presentarles la idea de hacer este documental a Walter Mercado

y a su familia? Cristina: Bueno, después de que Kareem contactara a la familia de Walter, programamos una llamada y nos pusimos muy nerviosos porque ya sabes, para nosotros es un ícono. Crecimos con él y lo adoramos. De hecho, habíamos practicado cada posible resultado y cada posible pregunta que nos pudiera hacer. De verdad nos preparamos muy bien y la primera pregunta que nos hizo fue ¡Cuál era nuestro signo astrológico! No sé por qué no habíamos pensado en eso, pero fue la entrevista de trabajo más divertida de nuestras vidas. Yo soy Libra, Kareem es Libra, y Alex es Sagitario. A Walter le gustó la respuesta y nos dijo que estaba interesado. Ha sido un proceso de aprendizaje para todos. Creo que dijo que sí al documental pero no entendió muy bien de qué se trataba. Él quería planear todo pero un documental no funciona de esa manera. Me acuerdo que decía: “¡Y acción!” cuando ya habíamos grabado durante 20 minutos. Trabajar con él fue una experiencia muy agradable. Nos divertimos mucho con él, creo que nos reíamos todos los días, muy fuerte. Le encantaba hacer reír a la gente. De verdad fue un privilegio. Kareem: Sí, tú sabes, Walter era ése ícono de nuestra niñez que aparecía en televisión todos los días, así que sólo parecía existir en la caja ¿sabes? Así que si lo conoces por primera vez y lo ves en persona, es esa figura extraordinaria que estuvo en tu vida desde que tienes memoria. Entonces, llegar a conocerlo fue interesante porque, otra vez, él es icónico. Es como un mago, se siente de otro mundo. Pero luego te das cuenta que es una persona normal y que no es terriblemente diferente al personaje que ves en la tele, cuando las luces se apagan - sigue siendo algo eufórico, maravilloso y más grande que la vida.

Cristina: Yo creo que queríamos preservar el legado de este ícono. De verdad creo que significa mucho para el mundo Latino y nadie había contado su historia. Supongo que todos estuvimos en shock al no encontrar una historia de ese personaje tan extraordinario. Es un personaje increíble y todos estuvimos algo sorprendidos. Creo que la representación de nuestra cultura en la televisión es muy aburrida. Muchas veces tiene que ver con narcotraficantes y algunas veces es la representación de, ya sabes, historias de migración. Pero él logra agregar una tonalidad y complejidad a la historia de la experiencia Latina y creo que queríamos producir otro tipo de contenido que relatara nuestra historia al mundo. En un inicio, la historia que queríamos contar era como una celebración, una investigación de esta persona. Pero cuando empezamos a grabar con él, su salud empezó a deteriorar, así que la historia que estábamos haciendo, pasó de ser una historia de un regreso a un canto del cisne. Los últimos años de la vida de alguien que tiene que enfrentar las realidades de un cuerpo envejeciendo, lo que todos tendremos que enfrentar; lo que significa prepararte para el final de tu vida. Supongo que éstas son las preguntas que explora la película pero que al principio no sabíamos que las iba a explorar. Ahora mi última pregunta: ¿Qué esperas que se lleven los espectadores después de ver “Mucho Mucho Amor: La Leyenda de Walter Mercado”? Kareem: Supongo que esperamos que la gente vea la película y se dé cuenta de que no importa si crees en la astrología o en los horóscopos. Que no importa si crees en una religión o en ninguna. Finalmente, el mensaje de Walter fue uno de amor y paz, sin importar tus creencias religiosas o tu origen. Lo más importante es vivir tu vida con todo el amor del mundo hacia los demás, hacia todos, y hacía ti. También esperamos que el mensaje que él compartió en la televisión durante más de 50 años, se haga presente en nuestra película y que la gente se vaya con la idea de que la clave para una vida más feliz y más larga es vivirla llena de amor.

ASTROLOGER OF LOVE: A STORY OF WALTER MERCADO Behind the scenes with filmmakers of new documentary chronicling the last years of the Latinx & LGBTQ icon who looked beyond the stars

I think he said yes to the documentary, didn't quite understand what the documentary was. He like wanted to plan the whole thing, which is not really how a documentary works, I remember he would go, "And action!" and we would have been filming for 20 minutes already.

rowing up I distinctly remember watching Spanish news program “Primer Impacto” with my family, and a silence falling across the room when the show moved onto the daily segment with Walter Mercado, the mystical astrologer and psychic who wore elaborate capes and instilled hope and love into his words as he spoke to audiences around the world.

But he was just so lovely to work with. He was so much fun and so funny, and I think we laughed every day, very hard. He loved making people laugh. It was a real privilege. Kareem: Yeah, I mean, you know, Walter was just kind of this childhood icon that was on the television every day, and so he kind of just like existed in the box, you know. So, when you first meet him and see him in person, he's this larger than life figure who's been in your life as long as you can remember it.

Mercado’s 50+ year career quieted down after he vanished off the airwaves in 2006. Why? Well if one cared enough, a bit of research and keeping tabs on Spanish language celebrity news would find that a legal hang up with his once trusted manager destroyed his career - it would take years to regain ownership of his own identity and his very name.

And so, getting to know him was interesting because, again, he's iconic. He's like a magician, he feels like otherworldly. And then you realize that he's a normal person and he's not that terribly different from the character you see on TV when the lights are off - he's still kind of over the top and wonderful and larger than life.

But I like many in the mid 2000’s went on with our lives with the memory of this man drifting into the long-term storage of our minds. For Netflix’s new documentary “Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado”, filmmakers Cristina Costantini, Kareem Tabsch and Alex Fumero, millennial fans of Mercado, chronicle the amazing trajectory his life took; from being a rural boy in Puerto Rico to being in view of millions of adoring fans hankering for a piece of positivity from the astronomer with the jewel encrusted capes. Up until his death in November of 2019, Mercado lived a quiet life in Puerto Rico, surrounded by his loved ones. Even so, he yearned to be back in front of his fans. “Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado” will put him back in front of those fans that loved him and introduce him to those that are new to this androgynous icon, through his own words and of those who knew him best. The following is the filmmakers recounting their journey in trying to capture the essence and marvel that was Walter Mercado, and the relationships they formed with him at the end of his life.

Photo Credit: Netflix them how much he meant to them and what an inspiration he was. So, he was he was well aware of it. Walter kind of knew his reach. He didn't necessarily talk about himself always in that sense of being such an influence and a pioneer on people, but he definitely was aware of it. What was it like trying to pitch the idea of this documentary to Walter Mercado and his family? Cristina: Well, after Kareem got in touch with Walter's family, we set up a call and we were very ner-

vous for the call because, you know, he's an icon for us. We grew up with him, we adore him. And so, we had practiced kind of every possible outcome and every possible question he might ask us. We prepared really hard, and the first question he asked us was what our astrological signs were! I don't know why we didn't see it coming, but it was the funniest job interview we've ever had. I'm a Libra, Kareem is a Libra, and Alex is a Sagittarius, and [Walter] ended up liking that answer, and basically said that he was interested on the call. It was it was a real learning process for everybody.

“Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado” is now streaming. I wanted to start off by asking what prompted the three of you to come together and make this film? Where did that inspiration to focus on Walter Mercado come from? Alex Fumero: We all grew up watching Walter with our grandparents, who would, you know, hush us vehemently whenever Walter would come on the TV. And so, it kind of left this lasting impression. And then as we got older, we sort of realized, like, what an unlikely hero he is in the Latin world, you know, because of his identity and his gender fluidity before that was a thing. And when I met Kareem for the first time, the first thing we talked about was Walter and Kareem was going to an estate sale where Walter was selling some of his capes, and I said, "someone should do a documentary on him." And he said, "well, yeah, that's why I'm going. I mean, I'm going to buy capes, but I'm also going to see if I can meet someone from the family." And when he and I set time to talk about who he had met, half an hour before that call, Christina called me and said, "hey, I heard you're obsessed with Walter Mercado. I want to make a movie about him." She and I had been colleagues at Fusion prior to that, and so I said, "this is weird. But, you know, I have this call in 30 minutes…maybe we should all do this together." And the rest is history. I was wondering if Walter ever outright acknowledged or stated that he was aware of this status as a hero or positive icon in the LGBTQ community? Kareem: Yeah, I think he was definitely aware of the influence he had on the queer community. In the events in Miami in particular, there's a large LGBTQ presence that actually spoke with him and told

I think one of the interesting things for us is that we were able to build a relationship with him during that period, the 2+ years that we worked on the documentary. He went from being, you know, kind of like "our Big Bird", to being like our fabulous aunt or uncle. And we were with him at the very end of his life, which is, remarkable as people that had that privilege of [spending] two years with him. When you first started working on this, what was the angle of trying to tell his story and figure out where Walter had been since he went off the air? After he passed away how did it affect the overall story you were trying to tell? Cristina: You know, I think we really wanted to preserve the legacy of this icon. I think he means a lot to the Latino world and nobody had told the story. I think we were all kind of shocked that history was not there because he's such a larger than life character. He is an amazing character arc, and we were all kind of shocked. I think the depiction of our culture on television is very boring. Oftentimes, it has to do with drug dealers and sometimes it's the depiction of, you know, immigration stories. But he really adds nuance and complexity to the story of the Latino experience, and I think we wanted to have another kind of depiction of our stories out there. But initially the story we wanted to tell was a kind of celebration, an exploration of this person. And as we started filming with him, his health started to decline so the story that we were making came from being maybe a comeback story to more of a swan song. The last years of someone's life, someone coping with the realities of a body aging like we all will have to cope with; what it means to prepare for the end of your life. I think those are all questions that the film kind of explored that we didn't know it was going explore from the beginning. Now my last question, what do you hope viewers take away after watching “Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado”? Kareem: I think that we hope that people will come to this film and realize it doesn't matter whether you believe in astrology or horoscopes or not, it doesn't matter if you believe in one religion or any religion at all. Walter's message ultimately was one of love and peace, regardless what your faith was, regardless of your background. The most important thing was to lead your life and live your life with as much love as possible for your fellow person, for everyone, really, and for yourself. And so in that you hope that that message that he shared for over 50 years on television comes across in our film and that people walk away realizing that, you know, the keys to a happy and longer life is living it full of love.

CÓMO SAN MATEO LOGRÓ SER LA HISTORIA DE ÉXITO DEL CENSO NÚMERO UNO DE CALIFORNIA

"Nuestra organización ha estado sirviendo al área durante 45 años. Esta es una comunidad apasionada, a veces dividida en ciertos temas, pero el censo se ha convertido en un tema en común. Para nosotros, el mensaje de que el censo es la manera en que se van a hacer escuchar ha funcionado, además, la comunidad es competitiva: querían ganarle a San Carlos."

l condado de San Mateo ha logrado la mayor tasa de autorespuesta del censo en California gracias a su trabajo con organizaciones locales que conocen muy bien a sus comunidades y al crear mensajes específicamente para esas comunidades. Ese gran trabajo y esfuerzo fue llevado a cabo por mensajeros de confianza y "sobre el terreno", en todo el condado, y fueron financiados por más de $1.3 millones de dólares con dinero del estado y del condado, según dijeron los funcionarios el 30 de junio, durante una teleconferencia organizada por Ethnic Media Services. El condado de San Mateo ha alcanzado un 72.8% de autorespuesta en el censo de 2020, más alto que el promedio del estado: 62.9%, y el de la nación: 61.8%. Rita Mancera, directora ejecutiva de Puente de la Costa Sur en Pescadero, dijo que su comunidad fue muy mal contada durante el censo de 2010, y dijo que "ninguna plataforma funciona por sí sola" para llegar a todos. "El censo de 2010 contó 2,019 residentes en nuestra comunidad, pero sabíamos que habíamos atendido al menos a 1,600 personas, por lo que calculamos que teníamos entre 5,000 y 6,000 residentes, la mayoría de los cuales no habían sido contados", dijo Mancera. Ella estima que aproximadamente sólo el 33% de la comunidad fue contada en 2010. En lo que va de año, la tasa de respuesta de Pescadero es del 46.1%. "Y fue muy difícil llegar a lograr eso", añade. Otro ejemplo de cómo una comunidad motivada, que trabaja con una organización local de confianza, puede superar las expectativas, como también sucedió en Pacifica, una ciudad en la que la tasa de autorespuesta ha sido mayor que la de San Carlos, una ciudad vecina y más próspera. "Hemos aprovechado la confianza que tienen en nosotros", dijo Anita Rees, directora ejecutiva de Pacifica Resource Center.

"En nuestra comunidad, para muchas personas este es un concepto nuevo, y tienen la equivocada idea de que esto es similar a una elección en la que tienes que ser ciudadano para participar, pero ese no es el caso", dijo Li. Li dice que en sus actividades de promoción han utilizado We Chat, una plataforma de redes de comunicación social muy popular en Asia, y mensajes dirigidos a los residentes permanentes e incluso a aquellas personas con visas temporales. "No soy ciudadana, pero voy a parques y bibliotecas, uso el transporte público y mi hija va a ir a las escuelas públicas, y todos estos servicios serán impactados por el censo del 2020 para los próximos 10 años", dijo. "Nos aseguramos de que la gente lo sepa". an Mateo County has achieved the highest census self-response rate in California by working with local organizations that know their communities intimately and by targeting messages to them.

“The 2010 census counted 2,019 residents in our community, but we knew we served at least 1,600 individuals, so our estimate is that we had between 5,000 and 6,000 residents, most of whom had been missed,” Mancera said. She estimates that only about 33% of the community was counted in 2010. So far this year, Pescadero’s response rate is 46.1%. “And it was very hard to get there,” she adds.

Those efforts by trusted, countywide, “on-theground” messengers were funded by more than $1.3 million from state and county monies, officials said during a June 30 conference call hosted by Ethnic Media Services. San Mateo County has reached a 72.8% self-response in the 2020 census, higher than the state’s 62.9% average and the nation´s 61.8%. This means that almost three out of four county residents already have filled out the population questionnaire, well ahead of the start of door-todoor visits by census enumerators, which are slated to start in mid-July for some U.S. locations and in August for the rest of the nation.

Many immigrant residents have trust issues because of their experience in their home countries, Mancera says. But the organization has used its relationship with those communities and families to get them to participate in the census.

“We distribute help to about 200 households every Thursday, urging them to use phones to respond to the census,” she explained. “We hired one person to call about 250 families that had received school supplies from us last year, so we could assist them in answering the census over the phone. There is also a lot of informal communication going on.”

San Mateo County, located in the Bay Area on the San Francisco Peninsula between the cities of San Francisco and Palo Alto, is composed of dissimilar communities, and the high self-response number varies greatly. Some cities in the county, like Pescadero and East Palo Alto, are way behind in the count, according to local groups.

An example of how a motivated community working with a trusted local organization can surpass expectations also occurred in Pacifica, a city where the self-response rate has been higher than that of neighboring, more affluent San Carlos.

Megan Gosh, census management analyst of the San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs, said the county began working on the project to boost census responses back in January 2018.

“We leverage the trust they have in us,” said Anita Rees, executive director of Pacifica Resource Center. “Our organization has been serving the area for 45 years. This is a passionate community, often divided on issues, but the census has become common ground. For us, the message that the census is their voice being heard has worked, and also the community is competitive — they wanted to beat out San Carlos.”

“We had plenty of challenges: 13 of 20 cities in San Mateo have a combination of hard-to-count census tracks, as well as unincorporated areas all over the county,” she said. Hard-to-count groups include renters, noncitizen residents with limited English proficiency and children under 5 years old, she added. California itself is a hard-to-count state. The county’s lack of affordable housing means many addresses are not known to the Census Bureau because they are tied to “nontraditional” housing units, such as converted garages and recreational vehicles. In other cases, people living in rural areas would not get the letters or questionnaires because the bureau will not deliver them to post office boxes, which most rural residents rely on.

“We worked with city planners and local organizations to canvass areas with those nontraditional units and add their addresses to the master list of the census,” Gosh said.

Outreach to the Asian community has been highly targeted, said Nina Li, outreach coordinator for San Mateo County. More than 30% of the population of the county is Asian. Chinese, Tagalog and Hindi are the most spoken non-English languages, aside from Spanish.

That county project was able to add 2,000 addresses to the census master files. Using a conservative two persons per household, those additions would have resulted in $4 million per year for the county because population counts are tied to distribution of federal and state resources. They also are used to create electoral districts that are meant to ensure political representation of all communities. Undercounts tend to shortchange that representation.

“For many in our community, this is a new concept, and they have the misconception that this is similar to an election where you have to be a citizen to participate, which is not the case,” Lee said. Li says their outreach efforts have used We Chat, a social media platform popular in Asia, and targeted messages to permanent residents and even temporary visa holders. “I am not a citizen, but I go to parks and libraries, I use public transportation, and my daughter is going to go to public schools, all services impacted by the 2020 census for the next 10 years,” she said. “We make sure people know that.”

Gosh and other county and community leaders described the more than two-year effort to get up-close, personal knowledge of those communities and what makes them tick, sometimes having to correct course and tailor messages to convince residents to participate in the census.

Lisa Tealer, executive director of the Bay Area Community Health Advisory Council, said African Americans, Latinos and others in East Palo Alto respond to the idea of regaining the power of “being counted,” a phrase that historically has had negative connotations because the census was used to discriminate against some communities in the past.

“For example, we received word that Daly City renters were hesitant to take the census due to lack of trust in sharing their information,” explained Melissa Vergara, a census specialist with San Mateo County. “So we created a targeted door hanger that spoke specifically about confidentiality laws for the census.” Other areas are receiving “hyper-targeted” messages through social media campaigns and internet ads by zip code, videos and bus shelter billboards. Also helping was outreach through faith congregations and in different languages, depending on local ethnic composition.

Immigration status has been key to reach the diverse Asian populations, aside from language, said Li, who like many in her community is a non-citizen legal permanent resident who is experiencing her first decennial census.

“We now claim it as power, we want to be counted because we helped build this country,” Tealer said. Similarly, the Pacific Islander community residents respond to the idea that the census is a way to ensure resources for the new generations, said Talavoy Aumavae, leader in the San Mateo County Pacific Islander Complete Count Committee. ashington, DC - A federal judge ruled this week that owners of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) must halt operations while the government conducts a comprehensive analysis to examine the risk DAPL poses to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. The court decision gave the tribe a hard-fought victory, which has been involved in a fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline since 2016 and was unveiled nationwide.

The ruling ordering the closure of DAPL indicates the last word of a decision reached on March 25 by the same judge. That ruling determined that the US Army Corps of Engineers had violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and ignored the devastating consequences of a possible oil spill when I ratified its construction permit in 2016. The court ordered the Corps to reexamine the risks of the pipeline and prepare a full environmental impact statement but left open the question of whether operations of the pipeline would be halted as a legal remedy pending further information. After carefully analyzing the seriousness of the government's legal violations and the possible impacts on the Tribe and other third parties, today's decision concluded that it was necessary to close the pipeline. The closure will remain in place until there is a full environmental review, which typically takes several years, in addition to the issuance of new permits. It may be up to a new administration to make the final decisions on them. "Today is a historic day for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the many people who have supported us in fighting that pipeline," said Mike Faith, President of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. “This pipeline should never have been built here. The Quakes’ objective is to raise and donate $740,000, promote volunteerism and increase overall awareness of this growing problem. We are uniting as a club to fight against hunger.” As unemployment figures continue to balloon in California, the reliance on food banks and other forms of government aid are at an all-time high. CalFresh, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), has seen applications surge more than 250% since the onset of COVID-19. Farm workers in California produce one-third of the nation’s vegetables and two-thirds of the fruits and nuts. However, these essential yet impoverished men and women responsible for feeding America are often not eligible for COVIDrelated financial assistance. Four out of every five students in the Alum Rock Union School District qualify for free or reduced lunches, but these resources have been strained and are being propped up by sporadic contributions and volunteers. The Earthquakes’ aforementioned donation, in tandem with local volunteers, helped feed the 12,000 students in the district. The Quakes are leaving no stone unturned in their fight against food insecurity and are extending their efforts club wide. Below is a full description of the club’s contributions to fighting hunger in the South Bay. a Virgen del Pilar, patrona de España y de toda la hispanidad, “Es la primera y la más antigua aparición de la Virgen María”, esta advocación ha sido marcada por la controversia pues la Virgen apareció aún estando en vida. Allá por el año 40 de nuestra era, el Apóstol Santiago se encontraba predicando en la región que ahora comprende España, específicamente en Zaragoza, a orillas del río Ebro. En aquel sitio Santiago apóstol, predicaba de día y de noche; entonces en la madrugada del 2 de enero, él y sus acompañantes, escucharon voces angelicales que cantaban "Ave Maria, gratia plena". De pronto, vieron aparecer como iluminada por el sol, a la Santa Virgen María, de pie sobre un pilar de mármol. La Virgen les dijo que construyeran allí una iglesia en cuyo altar estaría el pilar en el cual ella posó de pie y, que éste, permanecería en el mismo sitio, hasta el final de los tiempos. La iglesia fue construida prontamente, aún así, la controversial aparición ha sido defendida por unos y refutada por otros. La Virgen del Pilar es una de las advocaciones marianas que cuenta con el mayor número de milagros realizados, ya en el siglo XV se escribía un libro de milagros atribuidos a ella. Entre los millares de milagros, uno de los más difundidos, es “El milagro de Calanda", que data del año 1640. La historia se trata de un hombre que quedó mutilado, después que le amputaron una pierna, debido a un grave problema de salud. Era un creyente en la Virgen del Pilar, rezaba periódicamente con mucha fe y le pedía aquel milagro que resultaba inimaginable. Tiempo más tarde, el hombre soñó que visitaba la

basílica de la Virgen, y que la pierna sanada volvía a su sitio. A los pocos días, asimismo sucedió. Dejándolo perplejo a él y a todos a su alrededor. Se dice que miles de personas fueron testigos de aquel maravilloso milagro, que conmovió a toda Europa; por tal motivo en la pared de la basílica de la Virgen del Pilar, existe un cuadro recordando aquel portentoso milagro. Fue el Papa Clemente XII quien señaló la fecha del 12 de octubre para la festividad de la Virgen del Pilar, fecha que coincide con la celebración del descubrimiento de América. Peticiones: A la Virgen del Pilar, se le pide su intercesión ante aquellas circunstancias que parecen imposibles de resolverse, casos de enfermedades prolongadas o incurables, desunión familiar, también asiste en situaciones legales y procura alivio a padecimientos emocionales. Es muy amorosa la Santa Madre de Dios. Se acude a ella con toda fe. ¡Bendita Virgen María, gracia plena! Oración ¡Oh dulce Virgen del Pilar! Reina, Señora y Madre nuestra. España, junto a todas las naciones hispanas, reconocen con entera devoción, alegría y gratitud, tu constante y bendita protección celestial, y esperan seguir contando con ella en todo momento. Danos pues gran Señora, de tu amado hijo, la fortaleza en la fe, seguridad en la divina esperanza y constancia en nuestro amor a Dios.
