SOMEONE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT R ACISM! Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

uring a conversation about the American racist society which has been encouraged by President Donald Trump and his colleagues, Dr. Ramon J. Martinez, Ph.D., told me that Blanca Alvarado, retired elected official (32 years as SJ City Council member plus member of Board of Supervisors, County of Santa Clara), had said, “Somebody (Hispanic) needs to do or say something that RACISM!”, I could not agree more. However, I recommend that Latinos begin to talk to each other, especially a trusted friend, about their personal experiences with the racism which impacted them at various times during their life's journey. We have all had several experiences with racism resulting from prejudice and bigotry. And what are the situations each of us must begin to speak up about? There are several situations which each of us must acknowledge our feelings, disappointment, and anger when experiencing being the target of some individual's racist bigotry and prejudice. One incident I recall was when an administrator told me verbally that it was a “waste of taxes” to allow me to attend the local community college. I acknowledged his statement with my own, which was, “When I want your opinion, I will ask you for it.

Until then, as the administrative individual who must process my documents, please do your job fairly because you are not the one who decides who gets to attend any school or obtain further training.” In my assessment, the Trump Administration has demonstrated its racism with the treatment of families who sought entry into this nation at its Mexican American border. Individuals and families did not receive the asylum being sought. There were insufficient number of immigration processing personnel in those immigration courts, many judges are required. The placement of children and their families in 'camps' which were of inadequate capacity and staffed with personnel not properly trained added to the inability to process individuals or families with some level of respect and dignity. Much of that is the result of management personnel whose personal values are those of ‘being a white supremacist' to begin with. President Trump needs to recall that his family immigrated here; his current wife is an immigrant who receives special attention because of her looks and being a mother to the President’s son. Here in Silicon Valley, very profitable firms such as Google and Facebook are staffed by employees who are all White AngloSaxon persons (WASPS), usually of the male gender. Why doesn't Google and Facebook advertise employment opportunities in local ethnic bilingual newspapers?

Or schedule career fairs at local schools whose students are mostly persons of color? Our community is quite diverse. The local employers need to take those extra efforts to include diversity, and to communicate to local educators the needed information and skills which are being used. Have you ever noticed how certain 'expert panelists' on TV programs are all white-haired men? Until more women and persons of color are admitted to training experiences and employment, there will be no skilled, trained pool from which to choose the best and brightest. Too often, friends of friends get the best available jobs with the outcome that WASPS end up in the best positions. One mitigative approach is to plan a ‘mentorship effort’ which introduces women and persons of color to new career path. The unions need to publish ads in local ethnic publications - ads which inform millennial youth when paid apprenticeships are available and provide information regarding preparatory training and skills required. Racism has an economic aspect. In the past the best jobs available became known to friends and associates first. It was when the Department of Labor required public posting of available vacancies that individuals who were members of marginalized communities, began to become informed about the many op-

portunities which exist. Access to such opportunities takes the acknowledgement and approval of the executive level of any organization. Those who have authority and influence must make a special effort to inform those marginalized communities and then be open to inclusive diversity in the pool of trainees. The objective is to have a labor force become fairly representative of the resident population. And if it is not, then to undertake a program which informs unrepresented communities about the desire to become more diverse. I was asked to serve in the 'Minority Admission Committee, Stanford' during 1966 because at that time the Stanford faculty Senate adopted a policy to admit more women and more diverse individuals to that elitist university. I was a biochemist who came into my staff position when the entire research group I belong to was brought to Stanford by the Principle Investigator Arthur Kornberg whose research focus was on nucleotides. I recall when one high-level university administrator asked me who had hired me, and added, “We do not hire Mexicans here at Stanford.” Being nimble-witted, I introduced this prejudiced bigoted racist to Professor Kornberg. Arthur informed that individual that I was a member of his research staff and had been for 3 prior years. “You, sir, should not project your views on Hilbert. He is an American born citizen with birthright

privileges whose immigrant parents were from Mexico. He has never been to Mexico in his life and moreover, he has 3 years of military service. He is an American despite what you project upon him.” Arthur was very upset with that racist individual. Blanca Alvarado’s statement, “Someone has to do something about that” is being answered by many diverse individuals (such as me) who have acquired the training and expertise to become 'knowledge workers'. Too often, racist individuals fail to recognize the potential in individuals of color with the result that our economy and society fail to benefit from their professional insights and service. My parents told me as a child: “Do not allow others to define who you are or can become. Look for a way to get there.” I bring this up because our youth need to be assertive enough to challenge the psychic barriers which exist in others who are racist and who try to impose their image of who we are and can be upon us. Do not let them do that. To Blanca Alvarado, I say, “Many of us are 'doing something about that racism’ by development of our full potential, which amazes many.” We simply must not let others determine who we are and who we become. Even when it surprises you, and them. For there to be equal access to opportunity each of us needs to ‘go for it' when it’s appropriate. Success and becoming 'well-off' is very satisfying especially when you realize that many are 'doing something about it’.

Como es lógico, una mayoría de los residentes legales es de ascendencia hispana y de estos la mayoría son mexicanos, alrededor de 3.3 millones. Es decir, uno de cada cuatro residentes permanentes son nacidos en México, seguidos por nacionales de China, Filipinas e India. Del total de residentes legales mexicanos, 2.7 millones podrían naturalizarse hoy mismo, equivalentes al 30% de todos los residentes elegibles a hacerse ciudadanos, según estadísticas del Departamento de Seguridad Interna (DHS). Las razones por las que los mexicanos demoramos más que otros grupos en naturalizarnos son variadas: parece que

ACTOR RON BOHMER AND THE ‘UNDENIABLE UNIQUENESS’ OF “THE BOOK OF MORMON” A Musical Unlike Most Returns to San Jose from July 16-21

So, you have a few roles in “The Book of Mormon”. Could you tell me a bit about these different roles you play? The great thing about the way the show is designed is that the story focuses essentially on two young boys who are on their mission to Uganda and a young Ugandan girl that they meet, and it's basically how the events of the show changed their lives. But then there's a large cast of characters around them, and except for those three people everyone else plays multiple roles.

“The Book of Mormon” is coming back to San Jose with all its hilarity and subversive musical numbers. If you haven’t heard of the show, a quick refresher on the nine-time Tony Award winning Broadway musical goes like this: Two Mormon missionaries travel to Uganda to try and teach the residents about Mormonism, while the locals of the town are more concerned with more pressing issues like famine, warlords and the AIDS epidemic. Also, it’s a comedy, although it doesn’t sound like one based on the description I’ve given. Another interesting thing is it is written by “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and includes musical lyrics by Robert Lopez, composer of such hits as “Let it Go” from “Frozen” and Pixar’s emotional ballad, “Remember Me” from “Coco”. Quite the different audience from “The Book of Mormon” and “South Park”, but it’s also a talented and acclaimed roster fleshing out this story, nonetheless. Recently we had the opportunity to speak to Ron Bohmer, a veteran stage actor who has

been with the tour of “Book of Mormon” since around 2012. In the following we get to hear about his experiences with acting, what he thinks after all this time about “The Book of Mormon”, and why it’s nice to visit San Jose. Hi Ron, thanks for the interview. To start off I just wanted to know a little bit about yourself. I just wanted to know how you got started in the performing arts. How'd you get to where you are now and the inspira-

tion to get into it? Yeah, I mean I've basically been doing this in one form or another since I was a kid. I started taking dance classes when I was six years old and I was lucky enough to go to a performing arts school in Cincinnati Ohio which is my hometown. I went to college in St. Lewis at Webster University. And as it turns out my youngest daughter is also an actress as well and she also went to Webster University there. So, it's become kind of a family affair there. I moved to New York in the 90s my first Broadway show was a revival of Fiddler on the roof with Topol who was the actor who played Tevye in the film. And things just started going from there. I've done a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber, right up to playing the Phantom in “The Phantom of The Opera”. It's been a wonderful career; I've been lucky enough to spend almost 30 years now on Broadway and national tour stages.

Through the way Elder Price's mind works, who’s essentially the lead character, he sort of sees all the adults as the same person. So, I play his father, I play Joseph Smith the founder of the, Mormon religion, I play Jesus Christ, [and] I play the president of the Mormon Church. The nice mechanism of all of it is that every time you see an adult Mormon it's like, ‘That kind of looks like his [Elder Price’s] dad’. It’s a pretty incredible show in that regard. I think it's an amazing for people who think, ‘Oh I don't like Broadway’, or ‘I don't like musicals’. It completely converts them because it's such an interesting doorway in through the writers of “South Park” who have such a strange and wonderful view of the world. Their humor is just undeniable in its uniqueness. You know it also brings singing and musical numbers to people in a way that they've never quite seen them before. I just think it's a great doorway into musical theater and people end up really loving it. It's amazing to me how many people come back again and again. Given all that praise, could you tell me if you by any chance have a favorite song in this show or a moment whether it's you acting in it or something that you as an audience member really enjoy? Well my favorite number to do in this show,

my favorite song to do this show is the song that's called "All-American Prophet" basically because I play Joseph Smith on the show and that's the most fun I have all night with this wonderful sort of, almost mini sort of version of Les Misérables where we kind of do this short operatic version of Joseph Smith's alive. And it's kind of tongue in cheek but also taken pretty seriously, and yet just undeniably funny and through the arc of that I get to show Joseph Smith's life from his discovery of the golden plates on which the Book of Mormon was founded all the way up to his death and his death is, I hope, quite funny. So, we have a good time with that as well. So going back to what you were saying about how this is a good introduction to Broadway for people who might not know about this production or what it's all about, how would you present an invitation to "Book of Mormon", and say, ‘This is a good night out’? Well I think that the first thing people have to be prepared for with "Book of Mormon" is that there are some shocking elements to it. There's some strong language, there are words used in the show that a lot of people have sworn they'd never use in their lifetime. The great thing about the show is everything is based in fact and in reality. None of it is made up. It is a story about what happens when, if your goal is to bring people to faith and they have literally no faith, what happens when you figure out how to make that faith more about their lives, and it's actually applicable. Through the course of that some ridiculous and hysterical

Now, one of my last questions. Your acting career has spanned 30 years, so what would you say is something that keeps you coming back on stage? What is that gets you up to get on stage and continue doing these performances?

So, for me it's that constant quest for the most unmasked truthful behavior that one can show. Thank you very much for that insight. Finally, is there anything else you’d like to add about this production that you’d like people to know about?

I think I have been in the show every time it's played San Jose, so this will be my fourth trip, I think. I’ve always loved being in that region. It's a wonderful theater there I love that building. I very clearly can see in my mind the approach to it and the downtown area as well and we always have such a great time there. I've never been with a show that's had the kind of longevity that can return again and again through a town like this. I just think it's a delight to get to share this with your San Jose audience, those who were there for the first time and those who are coming back again. Programas en el estado de Washington destacan lo académico y otras destrezas, como las sociales y emocionales. HARLESTON, W.Va. - En toda América, la población en las cárceles locales y regionales se ha triplicado en los últimos 40 años.

Y una nueva investigación sugiere que, en los últimos 20 años, el crecimiento se compone esencialmente de personas que no han sido condenadas por nada. La Iniciativa de Política de Prisión examinó el Departamento de Justicia de los Estados Unidos y los datos del censo pasado desde la década de 1980 hasta 2016. And new research suggests that over the last 20 years that growth is essentially made up of people who haven't been convicted of anything. The Prison Policy Initiative examined U.S. Justice Department and past census data from the 1980s through 2016. Wanda Bertram, a communications strategist at the Prison Policy Initiative, says the research and advocacy group found pre-trial detention is a major factor, as many detainees either can't afford their bail or judges won't release them on personal recognizance. "The pre-trial population, which is much bigger than it was 10 or 20 years ago, is primarily what's driving crowding in local jails,” she states. “These are people that have not yet been convicted of a crime, but are being held before their trial." Bertram says many people with addictions or mental illness end up in jails simply because the community lacks other good options. She says that, and mass arrests tied to a tough on crime approach, have created an expensive problem

for local governments. Supporters of what's known as broken windows policing, which focuses on small crimes, argue it serves as a deterrent and has driven crime rates down.

In part to deal with overcrowded jails, West Virginia has worked on reducing the root causes of incarceration, especially substance abuse. Bertram says that's a smarter approach. She says the kind of things that help keep people out of the criminal justice system – family support, a job, substance abuse or mental health treatment – are all interrupted when someone is locked up.

"Taking people that are already suffering from a lack of services and doubling down on their pain,” she points out. “For the most part, people that are released pretrial do show up for court. And when they don't show up, it's because of the same reason that, you know, you might miss the bus, your boss kept you late, you couldn't get time off work, you had a child care issue come up, you just forgot." Bertram adds some local jurisdictions have seen promising results by doing away with cash bail – instead, releasing folks ahead of their trial and following up with reminders and the like. She says most people would rather stay out of trouble.

San Alejo vivió alrededor del siglo V, era hijo de un senador romano. A la edad de veinte años comprendió que su vida rodeada de pompa y riquezas era un peligro para su espíritu. Para servir a Dios en la mayor humildad, se fue de Roma a Edesa, disfrazado de mendigo. En Siria vivió por más de diecisiete años dedicándose a la oración y a la penitencia. Vivía de la caridad para ayudar a otros a encontrar el camino del Señor. Cuando se descubrió que era hijo de una familia ilustre de Roma, San Alejo temió que le rindieran honores y regresó a Roma, a casa de su padre donde vivió por años de incógnito, como un sirviente más, durmiendo debajo de una escalera por varios años. Un día enfermó, y ya agonizante, les reveló a sus

padres que era su hijo y que había escogido vivir aquella vida por penitencia y para servir al cielo. Sus padres le abrazaron llorando y le procuraron una muerte en santa paz. Cuando el obispo se enteró del caso, mandó exhumar el cadáver, pero no se encontraron más que los harapos del hombre de Dios y ningún cadáver. La fama del suceso se extendió rápidamente por toda la región. Peticiones: se le pide para alejar todo lo malo, especialmente brujería, fantasmas, alcoholismo, drogadicción, malas amistades y malas compañías. STATUS QUO/PROCEDURAL POSTURE 1. Petitioner, Michael Capone (hereinafter “Father”) and I dated for a few years and were never married. We have one minor child together, Anthony Louis Capone, (DOB 06/12/18). We separated shortly after Anthony was born in July, we both filed Petitions to Establish Parentage. I also filed a DVTRO on July 16, 2018 which was granted and has been in effect ever since. 2. At the initial hearing on my DVTRO on August 10, 2018, Father was provided with supervised visitation 2 times per week for up to 2 hours. Father never exercised any visitation. 3. After numerous violations of the DVTRO, Father was arrested and was in custody from sometime in October 2018 until approximately April 19, 2019. To my knowledge, he pled guilty to the charges involved with the restraining order case and a 5-year criminal protective order was issued with me as the protected party. It has been 10 months since Father has seen our son. 4. On April30, 2019, trial on my DVRO request was held. Father failed to attend despite having been present when trial was set, and I was granted 5-year Restraining Order. Our son is a protected party and, due to Father’s history, no visitation is currently ordered. II. REQUESTED ORDERS:

1. I am requesting to change our son’s name from Anthony Louis Capone to Anthony Louis Chu. 2. I am requesting permanent sole legal and sole physical custody with no visitation to Father. III. SIGNIFICANCE OF SURNAME 1. When our son was born, I had concerns about not including my surname in our son’s legal name. I felt pressured by Father to use the name Capone and to use Father’s middle name, Louis. Given Father’s history of anger and abusive behavior, I did not feel as though I had a say. 2. Now that Father and I are no longer together and his actions over the past 10 months demonstrate that he is mot committed to providing for our son or having a relationship with him, I would like our son’s name to include my surname so that he more closely identifies with me and the bond we have created. 3. While my hope is that Father can better himself and be a Father figure to our son, that is simply not the case, and I believe my son’s strong bond with me should be reflected in his name. Given that our son is solely in my care, I would like him to grow up sharing my name as well. Further, I believe keeping Anthony’s middle name the same as Father’s middle name continues to keep that bond with Father if at some point down the road, the Father-son relationship can be repaired and the two of them can be reunified. IV. PERMANENT CUSTODY AND VISITATION SHOULD BE ORDERED. 1. Our son will be one year old in June. Father has not seen our son since he was less that 1 month old. It is due to Father’s own actions that he was in jail for many months. At the DVRO hearing on April 30, 2019, I was granted temporary sole legal and sole physical custody of our son and no visitation was granted to Father. The Court made a Family Code section 3044 finding and Father was ordered to participate in Parenting without Violence class (or 52 week batterers intervention program if ordered as a condition of his Criminal case). Father has a lot of work to do to be able to reconnect with our very young son. I would like to be able to move on with my life and be able to obtain a parentage Judgment with long term orders. I don not have the money to keep fighting with him in Court over many years. 2. I am requesting permanent sole legal and sole physical custody of our minor child. I am also requesting no visitation for Father until he can show a change in circumstance such that implementing visitation would be appropriate. V. CONCLUSION Based on the above, I respectfully request that the Court grant my request to change our son’s surname to Anthony Louise Chu and a permanent order on custody/visitation so that I can finalize this aspect of my case. My name is Silvia Velasquez Salguero. I am the mother of Ivan Salazar Velasquez and if called to court and were sworn under oath, I would testify to the truth of the facts obtained in this declaration. I make all statements based on my personal knowledge and belief. I am a citizen from Guatemala and married the respondent in this case, Angel Salazar Martinez in the year 2000, though we started our relationship in 1996 and had our first child in 1997. I was a victim if domestic violence during that relationship and I separated from my child’s father and went to live my mother briefly when my youngest son as on a few months old. I then decided to move to the United States and left my two sons with my mother. Eventually my mother became ill and could not care for the child, so he was sent to live with his father, Mr. Salazar Martinez. I provided financial support for both of my sons during all the years that I have been apart from them and called them almost everyday. Mr. Salazar Martinez has gone on to have several relationships and had several children with other women. Due to the difficulty of raising and supporting so many children, especially young me who could easily be recruited by dangerous gangs, he decided to send my sons to live with me in the United States. I did not agree on my child coming because it was very dangerous, but he sent him anyway. In early September 2016, respondent paid a smuggler to guide my son to the United States. He was not accompanied by any close family members. The child was placed in grave harm on a long journey to the United States. My child was detained by immigration at the border and eventually released to my care. Since he has been here, he has been healthy, and going to school regularly without fear of being harmed by gangmembers. His father kept in touch initially, but since September 2018 he has not been in contact. My eldest son was detained by immigration in July 2018 and by the time he was returned to Guatemala in October 2018, he learned his father had left to the United States. My eldest son spoke to his grandmother and the only information she provided is that he is living somewhere near San Francisco California. I believe that he doesn’t want his mother to tell us where he is staying because he is afraid that I will ask him for financial support now that he is here. Since his father has not reached out to him to visit or provide support, and because Guatemala is such a dangerous place to live in at this time, it is in the best interest of my child that he be placed under my legal and physical custody at this time. Niños en Crisis Algo verdaderamente atroz está sucediendo en nuestra frontera del sur. Algo que no solo afecta a los valores estadounidenses, sino también a los valores humanos. Y se está haciendo en nuestro nombre. ¿En quiénes nos hemos convertido cuando nuestro propio gobierno no solo separa a los niños pequeños de sus padres y guardianes, sino que los obliga a entornos masificados, insalubres y peligrosos? Los bebés y niños pequeños no deben ser llevados de una instalación a otra. Los niños aterrorizados no deben estar sujetos a condiciones que sean gravemente inhumanas. A medida que surgen los detalles, nos sentimos conmocionados, enojados y totalmente desconsolados. Pero la acción es el mejor antídoto.
