Under the initiative announced in the patriotic round about the Independence Day celebrations, the departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Veterans Affairs (VA) will develop a rigorous and systematic approach to review the deportations of hundreds of migrants who put their lives in the service of the United States.
E

T
he dictionary literally defines a "second chance" as an act of generosity: whoever gives it, extends a helping hand to someone who has failed in the first instance and offers them the hope of succeeding in a new attempt. The definition fits perfectly with President Joe Biden's new policy of offering support to foreign migrant veterans, who have served in the United States armed forces and who have been unjustly deported from the United States.
Those deported war veterans who are beneficiaries of the new Biden administration policy will be entitled to medical coverage, starting with vaccination against COVID, as well as benefits granted to other veterans. The support will be extended to their immediate families.
Hundreds of those war veterans are Mexican and close to us. Many live in shelters in border areas like Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez. Some had no choice but to leave their families in the United States and return to an emotionally distant country. They have survived thanks to the support of local organizations and now, from this moment on, the country that served with honor in multiple military conflicts. The United States began deporting foreign veterans in 1996. The law states that lawful permanent residents can be deported if they commit serious crimes. There is no special distinction whether or not they have served in the armed forces. While the law also opens the door to expedited naturalization for foreign-born U.S. soldiers, that roadmap was not a priority during the Trump era.
President Biden's administration pledged to create a resource center to assist these veterans and their immediate families with all matters related to immigration, remove barriers to naturalization for those who are eligible, review deportation policies and practices and to prevent future unjust deportations of current and former members of the foreign armed forces, as well as their families.
“We had already taken a long time to establish that no soldier who served this country with fidelity and loyalty should be subjected to the shame of being deported. Service in uniform should have earned them citizenship for life!", reacted the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).

In the veteran’s community the news was greeted with cautious optimism, with a mixture of hope and skepticism. After all, many of them were expelled from a country for which they put their lives at risk. It is now up to the federal government to expeditiously and transparently implement a fair and generous policy that makes us all proud. For more information visit www.laredhispana.com.

CAL GRANT ESTÁ DESACTUALIZADO Y NECESITA UNA REVISIÓN PARA OBTENER RESULTADOS EQUITATIVOS
E

ICHMOND, Va. - COVID-19 turned daily life upside down and, for many, the stress led to troublesome eating habits and body-image problems. An American Psychological Association report found more than 60% of adults experienced weight gain or weight loss during the pandemic. Connie Sobczak, a bodyimage expert, co-founder of the nonprofit The Body Positive and author of the book "Embody," said the pandemic confirmed just how harmful stress is to the human body. While making changes in eating and exercise habits, she said folks need to take a gentle approach with themselves and be less judgmental. "It's really important to be kind and gentle with our bodies," she said, "and recognize and honor that they helped us survive, when so many people didn't." She recommended not going on a diet because it will likely backfire. Instead, she suggested slowly making changes to increase movement in your daily life - and then start eating more nutritious foods.
The pandemic also forced many people to sit in front of screens all day, whether online learning or telecommuting, further disrupting exercise and eating routines. While some overate during the lockdown, said Dr. Donna O'Shea, chief medical officer for population health at United Healthcare, others developed eating disorders, especially teens. "We see both ends of the spectrum," she said. "People who had excess snacking, but we also see that in others, the same kind of stress caused them to not eat, and to really put their health at risk." O'Shea said summer weather might inspire folks to get back outdoors. While getting back into shape, she noted it's important to focus on proper nutrition, getting enough sleep - and daily exercise, such as walking. "Walking has a host of health benefits," she said. "It can help us maintain a healthier weight, it can help ward off depression, prevent or manage chronic conditions - and really, just help that stress in the middle of the day." United Healthcare is offering a free online program to motivate people to make health a priority this summer; it's online at UHCStepUp.com.

ICHMOND, Va.

AARP SURVEY: MAJORITY OF OLDER AMERICANS CONCERNED ABOUT AFFORDING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS Vast majorities want Congress to act on pricing this year

AARP
ASHINGTON—A new AARP survey released on July 8th shows that more than half (58%) of adults 50 and older are concerned they will not be able to afford prescription drugs over the next few years for themselves or their families. Three in four (77%) reported they take prescription medications on a regular basis, and one-fifth said they chose not to fill a doctor’s prescription in the last two years. Cost was the most common reason given for not filling a prescription. When asked if they agreed that drug prices could be lowered without harming innovation of new medicines, about 80% strongly or somewhat agreed. “It’s clear that Americans are sick and tired of paying the highest prices in the world for their prescription drugs,” said Nancy LeaMond, AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer. “Medications don’t work if you cannot afford to take them. Congress and the President must act now to lower unfair drug prices and make sure all Americans can afford the medications they need.” AARP’s survey also asked participants their opinions on policy changes that could lower the cost of prescription drugs. Respondents overwhelmingly agree that it is important for the president and Congress to solve the problem this year, especially among Black and Hispanic participants (80% and 77%, respectively). Support for various policy proposals is very high across
party lines, including: • Allowing Medicare to negotiate with drug companies for lower prices (87% favored). • Putting a cap on out-of-pocket costs that older adults pay for their prescription drugs under Medicare Part D (78% favored). • Preventing drug companies from charging more for drugs in the U.S. than they do elsewhere (77% favored). • Closing loopholes that allow drug companies to charge higher prices for copycats or minor improvements (74% favored). • Penalizing drug companies that raise their prices faster than inflation (71% favored). AARP Public Policy Institute’s most recent Rx Price Watch report showed that retail prices for 260 widely used brand name prescription drugs increased more than twice as fast as general inflation in 2020 during the pandemic, rising 2.9% compared to an inflation rate of 1.3%. The average annual cost for one brand name medication used on a regular basis was over $6,600, more than $1,500 higher than in 2015. AARP’s national survey included 1,605 registered voters age 50 and older and was conducted by phone from June 1 13, 2021.
La encuesta nacional de AARP incluyó a 1,605 votantes registrados de 50 años o más y se llevó a cabo por teléfono entre el 1.º y el 13 de junio del 2021. tate-funding efforts to shelter unhoused residents in converted motels could be a gamechanger for Motel Drive, an area of Fresno that city leaders say has long been overrun by drugs, human trafficking, and prostitution. Local city leaders say Project Homekey has been a success in Fresno, providing shelter for about 1,500 people over the past 18 months. Not only have the funds helped shelter the city’s unhoused residents, but they also provided the opportunity to invest in the transformation of Motel Drive, said Councilmember Miguel Arias in an interview with The Bee. “I’ve always had a plan since 2019 to clean up this whole corridor, but we’ve never had the resources,” said Arias, who in May of 2019 initiated an ordinance to require inspection of the neglected motels. “Then, the pandemic hit, and we found ourselves with no shelter beds,” said Arias, adding that Fresno historically only had 10 beds a year to shelter the city’s unhoused population. That’s when the city decided to use a majority of the $35 million in Project Homekey funds to acquire four motels along Motel Drive, a stretch of motels on Parkway Drive along Highway 99 that city leaders have described as hotbeds for prostitution, drug, and sex trafficking. Federal CARES Act funds have also enabled the city to acquire and convert additional motels on Motel Drive for shelter and affordable housing. “Project Homekey has been a saving grace for this city,” said Arias. Without Homekey, Arias said, the city “wouldn’t have made a dent,” sheltering unhoused residents during the pandemic. Housing advocacy groups that have long criticized the city’s sheltering efforts agree that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Project Homekey has been a success in Fresno but said the program remains too small and said local leaders need to do more to address homelessness and affordable housing in Fresno. Project Homekey sites at capacity in Fresno The Fresno Housing Authority owns and manages four of the five Homekey sites, sheltering about 507 people as of this week. About 55 adults this week were living at Golden State Triage Center (formerly Parkside Inn), 135 adults at Sun Lodge (formerly Days Inn), and 83 adults at Journey Home (formerly Welcome Inn). About 100 adults and 134 children were staying in the transitional housing center, Step Up On 99 (formerly Motel 99), and the city has applied for another $3 million to finish the conversion of the complex, which will include more park space for the residents. Each community has 24-hour on-site security, laundry facilities, community rooms, and private offices for on-site staff and residents to hold meetings. Case managers and social workers support residents that need mental health and drug rehabilitation services, and Fresno Unified educators provide homeless student services. Swimming pools have been converted into dog parks for residents with pets. The fifth Homekey project is located at The Crossroads Village shelter on Blackstone Avenue, managed by RH Community Builders, and is home to 165 households.

On Thursday, the Travel Inn opened 33 of its 57 units for emergency shelter under the management of RH Community Builders. The remaining 24 units will be available on Aug. 1, confirmed Arias. The Valley Inn, which is currently undergoing renovations, will be available on Aug. 1 with approximately 80 units. Arias confirmed that negotiations are underway for the city to acquire two more motels on Motel Drive. Arias said, eventually, he hopes to see the city take over all of the motels on Motel Drive to convert them into affordable housing that will look “like any other apartment complex” that are part of the neighboring residential community. But the choice to place all of the Homekey sites along Motel Drive has drawn criticism from local homeless advocates. Critics are concerned about the decision to place families in an area plagued with drugs and sex trafficking. Arias said he shares those concerns for residents’ safety and well-being and is aware of the illicit activity at the neighboring motels. He pointed out that the location of the family shelter, Step Up On 99, was intentionally secluded from the other motel locations.
To help keep the area safe, Arias said that the city recently approved $250,000 for the police department to beef up patrols at night in the Motel Drive area.
Affordable housing problems plaguing Fresno, rest of state
While local leaders laud the city’s Project Homekey as a success, they acknowledge that the city needs to do more to support families and individuals experiencing homelessness.
“The success [of Project Homekey] feels good, but we know we still have a lot of work to do,” said Doreen Eley, assistant director of Special Programs at Fresno Housing Authority, in an email to The Bee.
Patience Milrod, executive director of Central California Legal Services, said she applauds the city’s efforts to use state and federal dollars to “keep lowincome renters housed, and to find homes for the un-housed.”
But, Milrod said, it’s not enough.
She said Fresno is “long overdue” for “coherent, citywide policies that incentivize and support affordable housing.” She also said that an affordable housing strategy must “involve investment of the city’s own resources long into the foreseeable future.”
As a next step, the city will convert the renovated motels into affordable housing and operate the sites for the next five years. Due to the lack of affordable housing for residents, there’s no limit on the amount of time people can stay at the Homekey sites.
According to a recent 2021 Affordable Housing Needs Report, more than 36,000 low-income households are without affordable housing in Fresno County. This affordable housing shortage comes at a time that Fresno home prices are at an all-time high. In Fresno County, the median price of a single-family home in May 2021 was $361,500, an increase of more than 22% compared to May 2020.
Both Arias and the Fresno Housing Authority confirmed that the available Project Homekey shelters at or near 100% capacity.
“A bigger need than anything else quite frankly is affordable housing,” said Eley. “Not just for the homeless, for everyone.”

Primero: ¿Debería retirarse a Gavin Newsom?

IT’S A DATE: NEWSOM RECALL ELECTION SET FOR SEPT. 14

statement. Candidates have until July 16 to finalize their decision to run in the recall. In 2003, 135 people ran to replace Davis. But now there’s a new requirement that could narrow the field: candidates must submit five years of tax returns.
alifornia voters will decide on Sept. 14 whether to throw Gov. Gavin Newsom out of office, making him the second governor in state history — and just the fourth nationwide — to face a recall. The announcement today from Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis comes after weeks of procedural wrangling by Democratic lawmakers and state officials to speed up the process for choosing a recall election date. Their apparent calculation is that the Democratic governor has better odds of defeating the GOP-backed recall if an election is held sooner rather than later. “I believe we have chosen a fair and reasonable date for this election to take place,” Kounalakis said in a statement. “It has always been my intention to choose an election date that gives election officials and the public ample time to ensure a smooth election with broad participation.” Newsom’s public approval has been rising as the state rebounds from the coronavirus pandemic, and he’s already amassed a hefty war chest to fight the recall. Holding the election on Sept. 14 protects the governor from being leveraged by special interests and fellow Democrats during most of the critical bill-signing period that ends Oct. 10. Delaying a vote until later in the fall would give his opponents more time to mobilize — and raises the possibility that voters could sour on Newsom if conditions in the state worsen due to the pandemic, wildfire season or other unforeseen calamities. Though the recall effort — led by conservative activists critical of Newsom’s opposition to the death penalty and California’s high taxes, widespread homelessness and immigrant-friendly policies — began before the pandemic hit, it gained support as the virus surged and Newsom imposed strict lockdowns to contain it. He was widely blasted as a hypocrite when reports surfaced in November that a maskless Newsom had attended a lobbyist friend’s birthday party at the ritzy French Laundry restaurant, even as he told Californians to mask up and avoid socializing. Only about 55,000 voters had signed recall petitions at the time of dinner. A judge gave proponents more time to
“It’s going to be like climbing a mountain. collect signatures due to the pandemic. And by the deadline in April, some 1.7 million voters signed the recall petition, more than enough to trigger the recall. But the state law governing recall elections lays out a lengthy process between gathering signatures and holding a vote. To speed things up, the Democratic-controlled Legislature on Monday passed a bill allowing lawmakers to skip a 30-day financial review of election costs if they’ve already set money aside in the budget to pay for a recall — and Newsom signed it into law within hours. The new state budget they passed includes $250 million to pay for putting on the election. “Politicians play partisan games. It’s all about retaining power,” GOP businessman John Cox, who lost to Newsom in 2018 and is challenging him again, said during a morning campaign stop in Sacramento. “I think people will see what’s going on. And it’ll backfire.” Newsom immediately vowed to defeat the recall and continued the theme he’s been hammering for months — that the recall is a power grab led by “Trump Republicans” who refuse to accept the outcome when they lose elections. “On September 14, Californians will have the chance to defend our state and reject this Republican power grab once and for all,” said a statement from Newsom’s campaign manager Juan Rodriguez. The Republican Party in California has diminished dramatically since 2003, when voters threw Democratic Gov. Gray Davis out of office in a GOP-
backed recall and replaced him with Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. Voters haven’t elected a Republican for statewide office since Schwarzenegger’s reelection in 2006. And Republicans hold so few seats in the Legislature — about one-fourth — that they don’t have the power to influence policy or budget decisions. But a recall creates an opportunity for Republicans, because the rules are different from an ordinary election. A recall ballot contains two questions. First: Should Gavin Newsom be recalled? And second: If he is recalled, who should replace him? If more than 50% of voters say “yes” to the first question, the person who gets the most votes on the second question wins — even if they have less than a majority. That’s because there’s no limit to how many people can run in the recall. Already, 55 people have filed a statement of intention to run, including former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, former Sacramento-area U.S. Rep. Doug Ose and reality TV personality Caitlyn Jenner — all Republicans. Conservative talk show host Larry Elder also is considering a run, Politico reported. Faulconer has tried to appeal to voters across the political spectrum by highlighting his work with a Democratic city council as San Diego mayor. “This movement is powered by Californians from every community – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. I am ready to lead this recall and begin the California Comeback to clean up our streets, cut taxes on the middle class, and reopen our schools,” he said in a
Voters will be sent a ballot in the mail beginning on Aug. 16. Everyone will be able to mail in their ballot, but options for returning it in person will vary by county. Local election officials had raised alarms about the rapid timeline, saying they couldn’t pull it off any sooner than Sept. 14. Even then, some are still concerned they may have a hard time getting the special paper and envelopes required and securing locations for voters to cast ballots. “It’s a good thing that we at least have a date now so we can at least focus on those items,” said Donna Johnston, the registrar of voters in Sutter County and president of the statewide association of election officials. “It’s going to be like climbing a mountain. And of course once we get to the top and carry off a successful election the view will be nice.” Not surprisingly, Republicans are very fired up about the recall, with a recent poll showing 75% are highly interested in it. But only 36% of Democrats said the same, which means Newsom’s challenge in the next two-and-a-half months will be to motivate them to vote. “The risks of a low turnout, the risks of an uninformed electorate, could be catastrophic for our state,” Democratic Assemblymember David Chiu said during a call with reporters the day after the election date was announced, in which Democratic party leaders vowed to unite against the recall. “It’s just so important that all of us work hard to educate every corner, every city, every county, every small community in California on what is at stake.” CalMatters reporters Sameea Kamal and Manuela Tobias contributed to this report.

ANTA ANA, Calif. -- Sites tied to Latino history and culture are underrepresented on the list of historic places, according to a new report from the Hispanic Access Foundation.
The study, called "Place, Story and Culture," identifies seven sites it said deserve more recognition and protection, including three in California. Norma Chairez Hartell, a cultural anthropologist and the report's co-author, said although the Antiquities Act has been in place for more than 100 years, only a handful of federally recognized sites celebrate women or non-white communities.

"We have less than 8% of sites on the National Register that are associated with minoritized populations," Chairez Hartell noted. "There's obviously something there that needs to be reframed." The sites chosen in California include Friendship Park, a spot at the U.S./Mexico border near San Diego where families can see relatives on the other side of the fence; and Chepa's Park in the Logan Barrio area of Santa Ana, which was originally created to stop a proposed freeway offramp from bulldozing the neighborhood.
it’s restaurant week!
"We want to increase the range of stories that are told," Edberg explained. "And these are places that are treasured by communities that should be protected for generations to come."
Dr. Manuel Galaviz, assistant professor of anthropology at Cal State Fullerton and the report's co-author, said the park played an important part in the fight for better schools and social justice in the predominantly Latino community.
Shanna Edberg, director of conservation programs for the Hispanic Access Foundation, said historic places shouldn't just be tied to government leaders or celebrities, but should celebrate the struggles and victories of everyday people.
The report also recommends greater recognition for Hazard Park in Boyle Heights.
"Hazard Park was central to the 1968 student walkouts in East Los Angeles," Galaviz recounted. "And those student walkouts were instrumental in creating a more equitable learning environment for Mexican American students."

EATTLE -- A deadly heat wave in the Northwest is laying bare the link between climate change and the rights of workers. Summer Stinson, executive director of the Seattle-based nonprofit Economic Opportunity Institute, said people were advised to stay inside and out of the heat as temperatures rose, but that wasn't an option for everyone. "So much of what the city or the state recommended for staying inside did not contemplate people either being unhoused or needing to work outside during the heat," Stinson asserted. Seattle, which reached a record high in June, did open cooling centers across the city. But in the Pacific Northwest, the heat was blamed for hundreds of deaths. Stinson noted even for folks who work inside like restaurants workers, closing the workplace due to heat comes with a catch: if they aren't working, they also aren't getting paid. She pointed out many of the workers who have been on the front lines of the fight against the pandemic also are on the front lines of climate change. Stinson contended both issues expose a widening gulf in society. "There just becomes a bigger and bigger divide of the haves and the have-nots," Stinson observed. "And we absolutely need to remember that we are a collective, that we share this earth, and that we are all in this together."
Stinson added solutions for climate change also will help workers. "Protecting workers is absolutely necessary, but without systemic change to actually address our climate crisis and try to reverse some of the damage to our planet, all we are doing is basically putting a band-aid on a gaping hole and wound that we have given our planet," Stinson concluded.

HOW DO YOU SAY "GERRYMANDERING" IN SPANISH?

¿CÓMO SE DICE “GERRYMANDERING” EN ESPAÑOL?
ENGLISH

Pilar Marrero Ethnic Media Services
here are terms that are hard to translate and concepts that are foreign, even if you can find a word in another language to say them. If not, just ask Miguel Rivera, from the Texas Civil Rights Project.
One day, Rivera tried to explain to his parents what he does for a living. His formal title is "redistricting expert" for the organization. That title itself is hard to translate: What average person really knows what that's all about? Many wouldn't know how to explain it in English or Spanish or any other language. "When I talked about this with my parents, I realized how disconnected they were from this process," Rivera said. "We are in Texas. If we want to activate the Latino community to participate in an issue that is vital to their well-being, we have to agree on the terms we use to explain it." The truth is that many people don't even know what it means in English. What is this all about? Every ten years, after the decennial census, all levels of government – federal, state and local--redraw the political boundaries for each jurisdiction that elects representatives in a process called redistricting. Depending on where you live, you will be part of one district or another, and that will determine what candidates you get to vote for to represent you: congress people, state legislators, county supervisors, city councilmembers, school board members, etc. If you are in the same district with others who have similar interests, then your issues will be addressed. If you are not, they won´t. It sounds simple enough, but it is a process that can define what communities get government attention and what ones do not over a ten-year term. Let's say it's as important a process as voting in elections, and much less understood. As in elections, it is also necessary to participate in order to defend the resources and voices of underserved communities over the next decade. There are terms that experts agree on: Redistricting and Gerrymandering are the most important. These are a constant headache for journalists in Spanish-language media and for experts and activists like Rivera, who knows how important these concepts are for the political power and well-being of the Latino community in Texas and the rest of the country. How to translate these words into other languages so that they can be understood by other communities in the United States? The first challenge for Rivera, he explained, was to translate the basic concept of redistricting. In Spanish, the word redistricting is “redistribución” -- but it's not very helpful in explaining we're talking about here.

"In order to run an effective campaign that explains to Latino communities in Texas why they need to participate in this redistricting process, we have to agree on the words we will use," Rivera said. Organizations such as La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) in Texas have been using "redesign” which seems simpler than "redistricting." Then comes an even more "curious" word: Gerrymandering. "Gerrymandering," which some want to “Hispanicize” by changing the pronunciation to something sounds like “jerrymanderin," is manipulating election lines to include or exclude certain groups within a district or to divide certain communities that have common interests, or share the same ethnicity or race, to prevent them from having the power to elect a representative. This is what sometimes makes an electoral district so oddly shaped and includes under the same representative wealthy communities in Santa Monica, California with poor areas of South Los Angeles, to give an example. The problem is that the word "Gerrymandering," invented in English to explain this concept, does not exist in other languages, Rivera said. "We ended up agreeing that “manipulation of districts” is the best we have, although I think the meaning is not as strong as it should be to reflect how harmful that practice is," he said. "They basically gerrymander district lines to ensure that certain politicians preserve their seats, or certain parties, and almost always the ones who lose are the racial minority communities." The problem is not just with the Spanish language. "It also happens with Asian languages," Rivera added. "We work with other organizations in the Chinese community, and it has been very difficult to translate these terms and concepts in Mandarin." It's work that needs to be done, Rivera says. He calls it "language justice."

Q&A: BEHIND THE “BLACK WIDOW”
Director of Photography Gabriel Beristain Leads Us Behind the Lens of Marvel’s Newest Spectacle
Arturo Hilario El Observador
rector of Photography on “Black Widow” and those other responsibilities that come with having a larger authority on what happens with the films look overall?
“Black Widow” continues the story of one of the most captivating and wholly human superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this newest comic turned action-adventure film, Scarlett Johansson shines as she returns as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, needing to deal with her murky past once and for all.
Before I was doing additional photography in that modality that Marvel discovered once they became a studio. Because I did Marvel films before, I did the "Blade" films, but they were not part of the Marvel Studio Universe. So now that Marvel discovered that when they finished the film [and] presented to groups of people to gather information on what that audience wanted to get and more than that, I call it part of "the collective dream", the collective dream that Marvel wanted to see in order to decide what to do, what they need to see and feel.
Although this adventure takes place right after the events of “Captain America: Civil War” and before the last Avengers film, this film is actually the first to kickoff Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), essentially leaving behind what happened with “Avengers: Endgame” and refreshing us for a new world with different stakes. Along the adventure to close the haunting chapter of her past as a morally dubious spy, Romanoff is joined by past colleagues, who are also an unconventional family unit, composed of Yelena (Florence Pugh), Alexei/The Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Melina (Rachel Weisz). This “family unit” is tasked with bringing down an old enemy that threatens the future of the world Romanoff has fought to preserve the last eleven years on screen. Recently I had the opportunity to chat with Gabriel Beristain, a Mexican cinematographer who worked as the Director of Photography (DP) for “Black Widow” and has had a history of working on films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and well as some from outside it. From working on the Marvel Comics character of Blade as Director of Photography alongside Guillermo del Toro in “Blade II” and later “Blade: Trinity”, to working on the first MCU film “Iron Man”, Beristain has managed to help give these larger-than-life stories a look that exemplifies the spectacle but also relies on catching the quieter moments and the more grounded interactions. According to him, it makes for a much more “human” blockbuster.

the character, so the photography and the style of this film, that's why it's slightly different, in response to that reality. We are dealing with a very powerful emotional film, within the great spectacle of Marvel. And as you mentioned, there already exists a framework for the visual style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and you've worked on other films within it before. With that in mind, what is the experience of now being the Di-
And that's the reason why Marvel films are very powerful. Because they speak to the collective dream. So, what I did is I tried to, yes, respect the style created by the director and the director of photography that did the first film [Iron Man], but when we went to do additional photography, that additional photography was responding to the needs of an audience that they had been presenting the film to, meaning the collective dream. So, my photography, even though had to respect that technical stuff and perhaps artistic, has to also create a language that was going to match those respective expectations from the audience. So, I have to be very, very respectful and at the same time very innovative. So, when I had the opportunity to create my own style, it was very interesting. And I hope I'm creating something that is not

With “Black Widow” Beristain took the reins of main cinematographer duties and as the DP, had the opportunity to craft the look of the film itself alongside Director Cate Shortland.
In the following interview Beristain brings to us the perspective of a cinematographer by giving insight into what happens in the background of shooting one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, and how he tries to use, “emotions to lead the film, not spectacle.”
Clases a Distancia con Horarios Flexibles
To start off, could you talk a little bit about what the visual identity and the visual language of “Black Widow” is and how you and your team landed on that look? Well, the Marvel Universe has a language that has been very clear, and people really enjoy it. However, "Black Widow" is like the character itself. Black Widow is the most human of all the superheroes. She doesn't have supernatural powers. She's really the product of training and suffering as character. So that makes her very, very special as a superhero and also Scarlett is a very wonderful actress. So, with those elements there on that character, what we are trying to do is we are trying to create a language slightly different of the language of most Marvel films without sacrificing the spectacle, on the contrary. So, the big difference here is that we are mainly using the emotions to lead the film, not the spectacle. The spectacle is there, and it's wonderful - people will go to the cinema and say, “what an incredible piece of visual effects, of fights,” it's absolutely fantastic, truly, spectacular. But within that spectacularity you will also have the emotions of

betraying the Marvel Universe, but that is evolving the Marvel universe and bringing something else to that, not only the spectacle, but also to work with the emotions of the character and create that visual universe in the same way that the comics used to do it. When you used to open a comic and see a very powerful image it spoke more than a thousand words. Could you speak on how you worked with the Director Cate Shortland, to find the right balance and tone of the human moments and the more fantastic elements for "Black Widow"? What the most important thing was trust. Jokingly I said, "I'm the hand of the queen, I protect the queen." And not that you needed to be protected. But the Marvel universe is powerful. I mean, the visual effects are very, very strong. And the stunts were very important and the fight arrangements and the choreography and the different units and the second unit and aerial unit and all those units. But what Kate and I hoped very often was, "let's make sure that nothing of that is going to be more powerful than our story." So those where the conversations that Kate and I constantly had and that was the trust because at the beginning, Kate was very cagey, "I'm not sure whether this man is a Marvel guy. I mean, he's been working with Marvel for so many films, surely he's a Marvel guy." Kate realized that even though I had worked for Marvel, I was not paid by Marvel, I was not part of Marvel. I mean I was a freelance cinematographer who was a director in my own right, and that I also had always worked for the idea of the vision of my directors, because that's the way that I would expect a DP to work for me, work for my vision. When Kate trusted that was going to happen, we both marched together hand by hand, actually making sure that the emotions of the story that she wanted to tell were always leading the spectacle. Not diminishing the spectacle, on the contrary, that's why the spectacle is so important there. But it's there in the service of the emotions, it's not only a beautiful, powerful visual effects image, it has a function that serves the story. And that's what makes the film very special. Thanks so much Gabriel. Now for my last question, could speak on any memorable or favorite scene that you set up for this film? Well, I think the most important thing for me, as I said, when you see the film, you see that there are scenes that are incredible. The rescue of David Harbour from the prison in Siberia is a phenomenal, spectacular scene. And the last scene is a spectacular scene, absolutely. But perhaps the most beautiful moment there is when you have two phenomenal actresses, Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, sitting in a little coffee shop in Budapest and talking face to face, heart to heart, the two sisters talking to each other. That moment of this phenomenal performance, phenomenal, powerful character dialogue, is what makes the film so valuable because you know that this extraordinary little scene, not only is that a master class in performance that really reaches the emotions of the audience and will make you think. Also, what it will do is it will perfectly match the full spectacle of the film. And that is really what’s the most interesting thing for me that I have done in "Black Widow". “Black Widow” is now in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access.
