MASS SHOOTING AT GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAL REQUIRES OUR ACTIONS

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

O

n Sunday, July 28, 2019 a 'mass shooting event' happened at the 41st Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival. That gunman had evaded security checks at the entry by entering through an opening cut into the chain linked fence. Once inside the Gilroy Garlic Festival, that 19-year-old gunman opened fire, wounding 12 individuals and murdering three. Police onsite responded by immediately killing the gunman who had been armed with a high-performance military rifle. All involved very likely have some level of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which may need some future mental or behavioral health services and attention. This sort of event is not unexpected because for decades, the National Rifle Association has acted as the principal lobbyist for the firearms industry. Founded during 1871, the NRA at first promoted gun safety education and hunting sports. Also promoted was marksman-

ship. NRA became transformed into a arms manufacturing lobbyist which promoted the sale of firearms to civilians while defend the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It reads as follows: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Our community lost three young people: Abuela (grandmother) Romero, who recently retired from Social Services Agency, mourned the loss of her six-yearold grandson. The Salazar family mourns the loss of a teenage daughter. A recent 25-year-old college graduate was killed; and twelve injured individuals remain traumatized. Family members and friends had left their East San Jose homes for an enjoyable Sunday afternoon and instead experienced an unspeakable mass shooting and the loss of their loved ones. On Monday, Whoopi Goldberg moderated the TV Program “The View” which informed its viewers that during the first 210 days of 2019, the United States had experienced 290 mass shootings. America is the only nation with that many mass shootings happening in its own communities. The NRA has promoted for decades the sale of guns successfully. Today in our nation there exist more guns than residents. It is time for constituents to have the U.S. Congress adopt laws which classify weapons into two class-

es: 1) hand weaponry (sidearms, rifles, shotguns) which fulfill the First Amendment right to bear arms. And 2) military weapons which include all high-performance weapons such as AK-15 which were designed for use by combat infantry to provide superior firepower. Civilians do not need the performance capability of these military weapons. If sold to civilians, these military grade weapons need to be licensed; the owner needs to have a gun ownership permit following a comprehensive personal background check (which preferably needs to be repeated on a 10-year cycle). In addition, the U.S. Congress needs to review all laws which NRA lobbyists promoted, and which became ‘laws of the land’. The first one which needs to be revoked is the legislation NRA promoted some years ago which prevent the reporting of 'gun violence resulting in a killing' to a central federal agency, such as the Department of Justice or FBI. This law prevents the collection of a national database relating to gun-violence which would be useful in crafting appropriate specific legislation. Gunowners keep citing their rights to own and bear arms. The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution reads as follows: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Keep in mind that during the 1700's, only handguns

and rifles existed; the militia was really the local citizens who were called to duty to defend their community so each of them had the responsibility to own and have a weapon of their choice. Today, the NRA and gunowners seem to ignore the words 'regulated militia' and 'people'. The right to own and bear arms was determined by the 'people' of a community, not by individuals. Recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings support this interpretation which permits communities to regulate gun sales and ownership. Our nation needs to take stock of guns and gun ownership/ commerce. Military high-performance weaponry does not need to be in the hands of civilians, but rather in the control of lawenforcement agencies and the military. Too many suicides and killings happen because too many guns already exist in our homes and communities. America has the highest level of gun violence in its communities when compared to other nations. Japan with a population exceeding 100 million residents experienced less than a total of 20-gun killings per year! In addition, American citizens need to learn about American foreign aid which really facilitates the sale of weapons. Many of the weapons used today in the Mid-East are guns and rifles funded and provided as military aid. Many of those weapons end up being used against our own

troops. The NRA is a very effective gun commerce lobbyist which uses its influence on the U.S. Congress very effectively. To thwart proposed gun legislation, NRA needs only to influence with its campaign contributions only enough legislators to ensure that no majority vote ever happens. That is a practice of many corporations today. The outcome is that corporate special interests end up having more legislative influence than “We, The People”, and that is very wrong and undercuts democratic ideals. There is more to gun violence and its prevention than meets the eye today. Now that a mass shooting has happened in our community, We, The People need to be motivated enough to insist that guns and gun ownership be regulated using permits and licenses. Each of us needs to speak up with our opinions to our local elected officials at the local, state and federal levels. To remain silent and mute is to be complicit in letting gun violence not be mitigated in some appropriate manner. I recommend beginning with 'talking to each other' and conveying our concerns to our local elected officials. We, The People have the responsibility to begin the regulation process. Plan to speak up and deliver your values and concerns about gun violence and gun safety which does not have to be as prevalent in our community as it currently is.

EL DISPARO MASIVO EN EL FESTIVAL DE AJO GILROY REQUIERE NUESTRAS ACCIONES

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

E

ANGRY AUNTS, GRANDMAS IN TEXAS TÍAS ENOJADAS, ABUELAS EN TEXAS RUSH TO AID STRANDED IMMIGRANTS AYUDAN A INMIGRANTES VARADOS

hoenix, Arizona - Anger over the iron-fisted immigration policies of the United States brought together a group of women in Texas who never knew each other before but wanted to do something for the immigrants stranded at the border. Today, a year later, the women are still helping and have received a prize for their work. The "Angry Aunts & Grandmas of the Rio Grande Valley" spend their free time providing food and comfort for families whose migration was blocked at the US-Mexican border. A sponsor donates the economic support they need. Immigrants once crossed the border without a care about risking their lives, but "now their needs have changed and I've seen the discouragement in their faces when they observe hundreds of their fellow migrants returning after being denied political asylum and deported," Elisa Filippone, one of the members of the group, told EFE. The Angry Aunts & Grandmas refuse to be discouraged, however, and in early June received the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, which took them by surprise but also inspired them to keep up the good work. "We didn't know each other before - the news informed us about the immigrants stranded outside the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge and at the bus stations. Some women equipped us with ice chests and we went to help them. That's how our support group got started," Filippone said.

Photo Credit: Pixabay When she saw more people coming to aid immigrants at the bus station, she decided to move on to the border bridges, where immigrants established camps on the Mexican side and where there was a "small Central American community."

The summer heat didn't stop Filippone, who every week visits those makeshift camps.

"They had to set up camp alongside the bridges because the shelters were full to capacity. We took them tarps, blankets, tents, and even so, the authorities twice dismantled their camps, during which they lost heaters, fans and other belongings," she recalled.

For several days we didn't know where the immigrants were, she added, because they scattered out of fear. Now there are only several dozen left by the bridge at Brownsville.

"I take them non-perishable food, though what they most need right now is legal counseling. They're very uninformed," she said.

They took up their posts at bus stations, truck stops, detention centers and elsewhere along the border for at least three days at a time to help the migrants with their bus tickets, inform them about travel across the United States and sometimes gave them $40 to use on the trip.

Some went to bridges on the border with food and prepared meals, hygiene products, clothes, air mattresses, medicines and condoms.

Filippone started helping the immigrants left stranded in the local bus station, whose employees called her when they needed her. "I became the manager of that area," she said proudly.

"Later more volunteers showed up, because the number of immigrants was growing. We got to the point where we saw 350 people a day. That was when the city of Brownsville intervened with shelters for migrants during the crisis," she said.

Q& A: THE MISUNDE RSTOOD WITCH OF “WICKE D” Actress Mariand Torres Takes Us Under the (Emerald) Skin of the Wicked Witch of the West

Arturo Hilario El Observador

“The Wizard of Oz”. It's about these two women who seem a certain way to us and we sort of learn about how they became who we know them as. And it explores the idea of what is good and what is wicked and how we perceive that.

P

remiering on June 10, 2003, “Wicked” became a Broadway sensation that took an alternate view of a character from the Land of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West, and changed her perception in the cultural zeitgeist from then forth.

It touches a lot on politics and what it takes to become the popular and well-liked social figure, and the [other] one might not be so [popular] but is the one that's actually fighting for good and fighting for what's right. Elphaba is the wicked witch, but she really isn't. She's just a misunderstood girl who is judged based on what she looks like.

Her actual name, Elphaba, strips away some of that evil associated with her from the L. Frank Baum book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, and the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz”. In those versions, Elphaba is the perennial villain, who is only vanquished when Dorothy splashes her with a bucket of water, as she shrinks down into the floor she cries out, “I’m melting! Oh, what a world, what a world.” In the show “Wicked” the world of Oz is seen years before the girl from Kansas lands, with Elphaba being a young, smart and extraordinary girl who is misunderstood by the world. Her story is one of unlikely friendship, social commentary and a journey which leads to her eventual moniker of being the “wicked” one in Oz. Recently I had the opportunity to talk to Elphaba herself, or rather the actor playing the role. Actress Mariand Torres plays the emeraldskinned witch on the North American tour of the show, which arrives in San Jose August 14. After pursuing musical theater in college, Torres moved to New York City and although her dream role of Elphaba eluded her over the years, she was eventually offered a standby role for the New York City production, and in time was offered the main role on the touring production. So, without further ado, in her own words Torres talks about her experience with acting, the ins and outs of “Wicked”, and of course the role of Elphaba, a witch who was misunderstood. Thank you for taking time to talk about “Wicked” Mariand. Of course. My pleasure. To start off I wanted to know a little bit more about you. Could you tell me about how you began your journey into acting, and what your inspiration for getting into the arts was? Well I started in high school. Honestly, I was a really shy kid, so I didn't really know that I was particularly good at singing. I knew I liked music and I liked singing along to the radio, and my family would always be like, "You have a really good voice!" And I kind of ignored it. Then in high school I was at this private Catholic school, I grew up in Miami Florida, and I didn't really fit in. [So] I wanted a way to make friends and I thought getting involved in some sort of extracurricular activity would be helpful. So I tried out for the choir in high school and got into the choir and basically my choir teacher started giving me a little extra attention and giving me solos and kind of helped me develop this like very raw talent that I had, that I didn't really know I had. From there I started learning more about musical theater and stuff like that, and then when it came time to apply for colleges one of my friends in the choir, it's actually like ridiculous how little thought I put into it, was like, "I'm auditioning for a musical theater program at the University of Miami," and my words were, "What is that?" And she said, "You know like 'RENT'." I was like, "Well that sounds cool!" So, I auditioned for a musical theater program at the University of Miami and got in, and somehow my mother was supportive of this even though I had never shown an interest in musical theater. And I went to college for it and moved to New York. And

People see her as different and she's strong and she fights for what she believes in. And I think people [fear] that in the show, but also in real life; people are intimidated by strong people who don't care what other people think about them. So, I think there are a lot of really great messages in the show. For kids and for adults. To add on, it's a social commentary then.

In “Wicked” Mariand Torres plays the title role of Elphaba, better known to people as the Wicked Witch of the West. Photo Credit: Broadway San Jose here we are. Awesome. So, in terms of your experience living and working in New York where does "Wicked" take place chronologically in your career? I moved to New York almost 14 years ago and I had seen "Wicked" towards the end of my time in college, I saw the original cast. I saw it with one of my friends and he was like, "You can do that," and I was like, "I don't know, that seems so hard." But then I moved to New York and you know it did sort of become this dream, like a dream role. I auditioned for "Wicked" for five years in New York on and off. Every time there was an opening in one of the companies, the team would bring me in, and I would audition, and then I wouldn't get it and I don't think I was ready. So, then I did end up getting it in 2010. I joined the first national tour actually for two years. So, I did it then for two years and then had a five-year break. I left the first national tour and you know sort of was like, "OK you know I did it, I played Elphaba. Bucket list, checked.” I did a bunch of other things and had a lot of other experiences and five years later, it just sort of came up again and I was asked if I'd be interested in being the standby for Elphaba on Broadway. I joined the Broadway company and I did that for a year and a half. And then the opportunity to play the role full time came up on the tour. And here we are. Thank you. Going back a little bit, you mentioned you had seen "Wicked" in college. What was your previous history with the lore of "Wizard of Oz", and anything related to it? I hadn't read the book when I saw the musical for the first time, but I did read the book before I joined the first company of "Wicked". So, I read the book a while ago and I had definitely seen "The Wizard of Oz" and was a fan. I saw it as a kid and was also a little scared of it. So, I definitely knew the movie and I saw the musical [with] the original cast. I saw it a few months into it opening, so it was kind of amazing because I really didn't know what to expect, it was a brand-new show. It hadn't been running for 15 years. There weren't YouTube videos of the show out there. It was jaw dropping when I first saw it, just completely astounded by it. As for the role that you play of Elphaba, how

was that experience of playing it as a standby role and then transitioning over to doing it full time? Was it easier because you were already familiar with it, or was it still a lot of work for you? I'm sure it's still a lot of work either way. It's definitely still a lot of work but I do think everybody should understudy at some point in their career. I think it's just a great learning experience. Being a standby is a whole other challenge in itself because you're not in the show every night. You're literally 'standing by'. You're just there every night in case you're needed, and it I learned, what was amazing is being a standby you're just always observing. I always took the time to observe all the women that I stood by for, so I learned a lot and I asked a lot of questions. It's [also] different - in a way it's easier to do the show eight times a week full time because you build the stamina for it. It’s a muscle that you're exercising every day. It doesn't feel like such a big deal every time you do it because as a standby you can go weeks, months without doing the role and it's a huge undertaking. So then suddenly, you haven't done it, you haven't stepped on a stage in a while and then there you are in front of 3000 people taking on this gigantic responsibility. So, you know they both bring their own challenges. I'm more tired physically than I was when I was a standby, and there's a certain level of discipline that I have. I don't really have the energy to really like go out with the cast very often after the show or do a lot of social things and I just have to really take care of my body and my voice. And I was doing that as a standby. But you know it didn't feel as big because even if I was a little tired and I had to do the show maybe once or twice, I was fine. But there is something about knowing I have eight shows ahead of me for the week. So, I have to really take care of myself. But I think that having been a standby made this job a lot easier. I knew what the pacing entailed, there was a lot about the role that I already knew. Now could you talk about the story itself and how your character, Elphaba, fits into it? Yes. So Wicked is the story of the two witches of Oz, Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, as she's known as the Wicked Witch, and their relationship. I like to say it offers a different perspective from the story you think you know of

Oh absolutely. It absolutely is a social commentary. It's crazy that the show's been running for 15 years and it's still relevant. And I would say it's more relevant than ever right now. What would you say is one thing that you love about the show, whether it be the process involved, or your character? I mean I just really love this character. She's complicated and she's strong. I think playing as a strong woman on stage, it's empowering. I think the character is a great role model for little girls and for women. The show is also just magical. It's the quintessential Broadway spectacle. It has all of the elements you want when you want to see a big Broadway musical. But I think the most important thing about it is that it has heart, and it has a story that you really care about, it's not just fluff. There are characters you really, really care about. And like I said before there are messages that are important, and I think the show has a very strong message and there's a reason why we tell the story and I think it's important. Is there any particular scene that you like to be part of, or one point that is your favorite in "Wicked"? You know that changes often. I really like all my scenes with Glinda, our Glinda is Erin Mackey and she's actually a friend of mine in real life and we were friends before we did this together. Just being on stage with her is great. We have a really good give and take relationship and I really enjoy acting with her but I also love the song "No Good Deed" in Act 2, it's Elphaba's big Act 2 number, and it's the moment you sort of see her switch and decide, “OK you know you want to call me ‘wicked’ then fine. I'm the Wicked Witch of the West.” It's a really cool moment. Well thank you so much Mariand. Is there anything that you'd like to add in terms of how you feel about the show, what you hope people get out of it, or anything else? I mean I think we touched on this but I think the biggest thing I hope people get out of it is the lesson [to] never to judge a book by its cover, and you know people are always going through their own thing and I think being kind and understanding towards one another despite our differences is a really big thing that I think the show teaches. Not to be fooled by appearances. It's not so black and white. There's always a lot of gray area and a lot to learn about people, if we just dig a little deeper. “Wicked” comes to The San Jose Center for the Performing Arts from August 14 – September 8, 2019. 6 COSAS QUE DEBES SABER 6 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW SOBRE LAS VACUNAS ABOUT VACCINATIONS contra el sarampión, las paperas y la rubéola (MMR) es de 12 a 15 meses de edad.

Photo Credit: Pixabay 6. Hasn’t the U.S. eradicated the major diseases that require vaccines? One of the country’s greatest public health success stories is the remarkable decrease in infectious diseases as the result of vaccines. Unfortunately, that success has led some parents to stop vaccinating their children against diseases like measles, meningitis, polio and diphtheria. However, these diseases still exist, and can still debilitate and kill. If people stop getting vaccinated, diseases that were once considered eradicated could reemerge -- which is what’s been happening with measles outbreaks across the U.S. More information can be found at cdc.gov/vaccines. Want to keep your family healthy and your community safe? Be sure to check your immunization status and stay up to date with vaccines.

s misinformation continues to spread about vaccines, medical experts are reminding parents and the general public that vaccinations save lives. “Overwhelming scientific evidence shows that vaccines are among the most effective, safest interventions to prevent illness and protect public health,” says Dr. Patrice A. Harris, president of American Medical Association (AMA). To help dispel misconceptions about vaccinations, the AMA is offering answers to six commonly asked questions. 1. Are vaccines safe? Yes, vaccines prevent individual illness and protect the health of the public. Currently, the U.S. has the safest vaccine supply in its history, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The most common side effects are typically very mild, such as pain or swelling at the injection site. 2. Is it true that if everyone else is vaccinated, my family doesn’t need to be? No. Vaccines not only protect the child or adult who receive them, but also the health of their communities. Some people cannot be vaccinated -- including very young children, cancer patients and those who are immunosuppressed. When immunization rates are high, people in these categories are protected because they’re less likely to be exposed to the disease. As evident from recent measles outbreaks in several states, when individuals aren’t immunized as a matter of personal preference or misinformation, they put themselves and others at risk of disease. 3. What vaccinations do my children need? Children should be vaccinated according to the recommended schedule of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which is designed to protect young children before they’re likely to be exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases and when they’re most vulnerable to serious infections. For the latest recommended childhood vaccination schedule, visit cdc. gov/vaccines/schedules. 4. I don’t want my children to get vaccine-preventable diseases. What’s the earliest age they can be vaccinated? Children can receive their first flu vaccine starting at 6 months old. The recommended age for the first dose of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is 12 to 15 months of age. If you live in a community experiencing an outbreak, or if you travel internationally, your baby may be vaccinated as early as 6 months of age. Talk to your pediatrician for additional information about when early vaccination may be appropriate. 5. I’m an adult, do I need to get vaccinated? Yes, adults need vaccines too. Sometimes immunity from childhood vaccines can wear off over time. Adults may also need vaccinations because of their age, job, travel and health conditions. Talk with your doctor to determine which vaccines you need and visit www2a.cdc.gov/nip/adultimmsched for an online assessment tool.

EARTHTALK Q&A: "GLAMPING" CHARLA CON LA TIERRA: "GLAMPING" Dear EarthTalk: I was never keen on tent camping, but I hear that the new “glamping” trend takes some of the discomfort out of spending the night in nature. Where are some “glamping” hotspots across the United States? - Jon Rubinstein, Albany, NY

hile traditional campgrounds are great, they don’t always feel like an escape to nature, especially given the dog-eat-dog aspect of scoring a site and the fact that you’ll be living right next to your neighbors. And while the price may be right — you can score a tent site in most state parks for less than $30/night — maybe you’d be willing to pay more for privacy and some creature comforts? If you’re one of the millions of Americans yearning for more outdoors time but don’t want to deal with campgrounds, “glamping” (short for “glamorous camping”) might be just your speed. Indeed, glamping is one of the hottest trends in the hospitality sector these days and several travel start-ups have risen to this challenge. To wit, Roam Beyond tows eco-friendly, solar-powered, off-grid camping trailers (made in the USA by its sister company Homegrown Trailers) onto various sites in or near different iconic natural areas around the West. Their first two sites are in Washington State (on the Pacific coast and in the Cascade foothills) but the company has new sites in the works at Yellowstone, Joshua Tree, Sedona, Moab, Zion and the Grand Canyon. Meanwhile, California-based AutoCamp offers guests the opportunity to spend the night in a tricked-out customized Airstream camping trailer in Yosemite, Sonoma or Santa Barbara. While AutoCamp originally sourced and rehabbed older trailers, now it works in partnership with Airstream in the production of hundreds of new customized ones. The company recently raised $115 million in venture capital to expand to several new locations in California and on the East Coast. New York City isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you think glamping, but Collective Retreats is trying to change all of that with its new platform-tent resort there on Governors Island. Yes, you’ll be sleeping in a tent, but inside you’ll have all the amenities you’d expect at a five-star hotel, including plush beds with high thread count linens, bathrooms with luxury amenities, and chefprepared “farm-to-table” meals. You can also indulge in the Collective Retreats experience at their other properties in Upstate New York’s Hudson Valley on a working organic farm as well as in the Texas Hill Country and at Yellowstone and Vail. Yet another option is Under Canvas, which operates safari-style canvas tent resorts in eight locations across the country including the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Moab, Glacier, Zion, Mt. Rushmore, Tucson and the Great Smokies. You’ll hardly be roughing it in one of Under Canvas’ tents given the in-suite bathrooms, king size beds, daily housekeeping and wood-burning stoves. Of course, these start-ups didn’t invent glamping, and there are still many ways to glamp at one-off resorts and sites across the country. In fact, a quick search for glamping spots in the United States

on GlampingHub.com turns up 20,000 listings. And many state parks and private campgrounds are devoting more space to yurts, tipis and even overnight lodging made from refurbished shipping containers.

Conservation groups have been marking Earth Overshoot Day for about 10 years, and their "move the date" campaign aims to convince governments to use fewer resources so the overshoot date moves later and later until supply and demand are once again in balance. uando Cristina y Jerry Alarcón obtuvieron protección temporal contra la deportación, los espíritus de la pareja indocumentada se dispararon.

hen Cristina and Jerry Alarcon won temporary protection from deportation, the spirits of the undocumented couple soared. Then came President Donald Trump. Today, they keep a portfolio stuffed with personal documents in a drawer, ready to grab quickly if and when they are arrested and deported.

“Our stress is not going to change anything as far as what Donald Trump or the Congress wants to do,” Jerry Alarcon, 28, said in English as he sat on the steps of his front house on a scorching hot day in San Jose.

UU.

Their gold-and-teal plastic portfolio had all the important documents for themselves and their kids, such as passports and Social Security numbers and the children’s U.S. birth certificates. The married couple is protected from deportation by the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program, or DACA, established by former President Barack Obama in August 2012. Obama wanted to shield undocumented immigrants who arrived at a young age, arguing that innocent children should not be punished for decisions made by their parents. Jerry Alarcon was 9 when he arrived from El Salvador. Cristina Alarcon was 2 when she came from Mexico. Seven years after DACA began, the Alarcons, like many of about 799,000 DACA recipients, have become DACA parents with U.S.- born children. The future of many people’s legal status is in question because of changing politics. Trump in 2017 promised to end DACA but so far nothing has been officially set. He’s made a plea to the U.S. Supreme Court about his authority to end the program, but it might take until June 2020 for the court to decide. Under Trump, these DACA parents now find themselves facing tough questions: If they’re deported, what should they do with their children? Return to their homelands and raise their kids in what for them will be a foreign land? Or leave the children here to live with relatives and rarely see them? The Alarcons admit they are somewhat scared that at any moment the law will change and they’ll be gone, leaving their two children, ages 4 and 1, with relatives here. However, they’ve decided to leave on their own if Trump is reelected. “We feel like we could survive anywhere else,” Cristina Alarcon said in perfect, unaccented English. “We’re busting our asses here to live life, we’re going to bust our asses in any other country to live life whether it’s in Mexico or El Salvador.” Living day by day, the Alarcons are focused on working and giving their children the best life and education they can possibly have in California. But if they had to flee, the Alarcons think the kids are young enough to adapt in Mexico. President Trump has outlined a new immigration policy that would base immigration

Both of their children were born in the U.S., making them American citizens. Photo Credit: Paulo Orozco, Mosaic Journalism to the United States based on merit and skill, not on family reunification. Current undocumented immigrants would still be subject to deportation. In a tweet this week, Trump said immigration enforcement agents will begin deporting large numbers of undocumented people. “They will be removed as fast as they come in.”

inmigrantes indocumentados actuales aún estarían sujetos a deportación.

Merle Kahn, an immigration attorney in San Jose, often advises undocumented clients on arranging guardianship of their kids, setting plans for their properties and more legal issues.

“What I am seeing is that the Trump administration is not necessarily deporting more people, but they are terrifying them,” Kahn said. “They are threatening mass detentions. They are not giving people enough time to present their cases in immigration court.”

Data from the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, show that roughly a halfmillion U.S citizen children have at least one parent possibly subject to deportation. Another DACA couple who must deal with the question of leaving or taking their U.S.-born children with them are Pablo Vasquez and his wife. Coming from Jalisco, Mexico, the couple lives in Gilroy with their three young children. Vasquez credits DACA for allowing him to get a job as an air-conditioning mechanic, obtain health benefits and buy a house. “DACA 100% changed my life,” he said in Spanish.

Vasquez admitted he’s not prepared for deportation. His parents here do not have immigration papers, so leaving the children with them isn’t an option for him. He says he might sell his house in order to have something to live off of in Mexico and would take his Americanborn kids with him.

“I wouldn’t be able to leave them with other people,” Vasquez said. “My heart would break.”
