TRAITS WHICH DEFINE RACISM

he word RACISM is being used today very openly by many individuals. In the past, one used it amongst close friends. Racism is closely characterized by bias, prejudice, and bigotry. America, as a nation, is committed to the ideal that each individual merits due process which results in equal treatment under the laws of this land. This is an ideal which has not been fully achieved because of racism practiced by those who have authority, influence and power. Today, one such racist individual is an elected official, namely President, Donald J. Trump, a Republican now being supported by his Republican colleagues in the U.S. Congress. Many indicators point to President Trump being a racist: Note that the President's Advisory Council is entirely WASP (White, Anglo-Saxon Men) with the exception of two individuals - a woman who favors charter schools over public schools, and an African American neurosurgeon who now heads HUD (Housing & Urban Development). His own words and behavior reveal many traits which characterize racism. When a presidential candidate during 2015/2016, his trumpery (inept and foolishness) was revealed when he said, “Mexicans are criminals; rapists; narco-traffickers; and not Mexico's best.” When announcing his presidential candidacy, Trump did not use the term “illegal Mexicans”. It is Trump's verbal pattern to end pejorative statements with saying

something “good”. Trump never told the American people that Mexicans are the “largest group of legal immigrants and new citizens”. He did admit that, “Some Mexicans are good people.” In my view, it is Trump's personal values and standards which are in full display through the executive orders guiding the Border Patrol's handling and treatment of Central Americans seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexican border. Children were separated from their parents; traditional practices were modified to require anyone wanting to enter America legally to wait in Mexico until their personal case came up before the immigrant courts (which were severely understaffed). Detention Centers were built by the private sector', which permitted the Trump Administration to give lucrative contracts to “Friends of Trump”. Some Border Patrol actions reported by mainstream media rival what Nazi Germany did to the European Jewish people. Many TV news reports displayed the actions being taken to discourage brownskinned Mexican, Central and South Americans from becoming new immigrants to America.

In my view, many Trump Administration policies did not conform to constitutional American ideals which treat all people with respect and dignity. Is Donald J. Trump a racist? You decide after considering the following documented events which displayed the aggressive pejorative values which Trump practices routinely: After visiting El Paso, whose mayor asked him not to come, but he did anyway, “He screamed at his aides to begin producing proof in El Paso that people were happy to see him.” (source: Daily Kos Recommended; 08.14.2019). He realized that those Mexican American citizens (and Mexican Nationals) which he routinely insulted with

demeaning terms were able to be civil and unimpressed with his leadership style.

Someone needs to tell Trump that the entire South-Western America (500,000 square miles: California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma) was all once national Mexican territory. (Note: the Mexican American War was initiated with falsehoods presented to the U.S. Congress by President Polk, 1844) Despite Mexico not being an impediment to a United States of America from sea to shining sea under its Manifest Destiny Policy, illwill has been manifested towards Mexico and Mexicans. Prominent American leaders who lie or lied about Mexico and Mexicans to steal Mexican real estate, to exploit Mexicans, to subjugate them into legal and political serfdom have been around since President James Polk lied to Congress charging Mexican troops attacked Americans on U.S. territory to today’s President Trump. The lie is the weapon used against Mexicans and all people of color. The racist, who may be a German neo-Nazi or Jew also exhibits bias and prejudice against Jews from the Ukraine and Russia and Sephardic (Mediterranean) Jews who practice their own form of Judaism. Of course, a racist must manifest dislike and disapproval of the Jewish State of Israel. This is Trump's one exception since he befriended Israel's leader Netanyahu. Despite confrontations between Americans and Muslim North Africans dating back over 200 years, Americans have not had extensive interaction with worldwide Muslims until WWII. Yet, Trump wanted to ban immigration from Muslim nations despite the fact that the Muslims that attacked the New York Trade Center on 09.11.2001 were not immigrants.

They were 19 Arab terrorists.

The exception was several years of war between American troops that took over the Philippines from Spain in 1900 and native Moros, Filipino Muslims. The general rule of racist attitudes by Americans has always been based upon religion, color-of-skin, national origin and/or ethnicity. With Mexico and Mexicans, California real estate has been the foundation of overt war, racist acts and outright lying. Mexicans have one ingredient that Eastern and Southern Europeans don’t have in their ethnic mix. Most Mexicans (60%), like this writer, are blessed with being part of the “Cosmic Race,” or “La Raza Cosmica. “La Raza Cosmica” is a mixture of American Indian and European genetics (mostly Spanish). Mix in Roman Catholicism and an Indian portrayal of Mary, Mother of God, i.e. as its native Our Lady of Guadalupe as the patron saint of Mexico, then it is no wonder that the traditional 1840’s Know-Nothing Protestant racist is reborn in the persona of President Donald J. Trump as a biased, bigoted, prejudiced racist. As stated, my qualifications to define a racist are needed as to who can define racists and racism. I label President Trump a racist; here’s why: There are very few Blacks and Latinos in his company which reflect many personal choices already made. Donald Trump hired illegal Polish workers to work on the Trump Tower. Not a single local Blacks or Latino. Donald Trump and his father were sued by the Nixon/Ford Department of Justice for discrimination against Blacks and Puerto Ricans in Cincinnati and New York City housing. The Trumps settlement was in the millions of dollars. In his announcement for President,

Trump declared that Mexico was not sending its “best” to the U.S. Mexico was sending “criminals, rapists and drug dealers,” but that “some” were “nice people.” He never mentioned illegal aliens in those announcements. He proposed building a “great wall” along the U.S.-Mexican border to keep people from entering the U.S. from Mexico and “Mexico will pay” for it.” He immediately labeled the successful trade agreement in U.S. history (NAFTA: North America Free Trade Agreement between Canada, Mexico and America) as a Mexican rip-off of the U.S.A. That is a lie! Trump criticized a federal judge in San Diego who sentenced Mexican cartel leaders to prison, of not being fair in a case of alleged Trump fraud. He claimed the judge could not be fair because the judge was Mexican. The judge is an American citizen. From Trumps campaign startup in 2015, Trump said an “invasion” of “animals; thugs; criminals; and murderers were all from Mexico and Central America. No Norwegians, Swedes or Germans. Trump’s entire history reflects a total dislike of people that don’t look like him. In summary, Trump is a model racist possessing all their essential traits. President Donald J. Trump's behavior and actions define all racist traits. Just look at his political appointments. With almost 40 million Mexican Americans in this nation, why couldn’t President Trump find a single man or woman having Mexican heritage to appoint to a highly visible office as a model of public service. NOT ONE isn’t acceptable. REMEMBER NOT TO VOTE FOR TRUMP'S RE-ELECTION. Reasonable presidents such as Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43 found dozens of highly qualified Latinos to appoint; Trump and his Republican colleagues could not find ONE. Not one! INCREDIBLE!

rlet Miranda Torres and one of her running teammates came up with a cheer to motivate each other during their races.

“Pain is temporary, pride is forever.” That motto would come to define Torres a firstgeneration American student, who lives with her mother and two brothers. Her father was deported when she was 8 years old, and for a majority of her life she was raised by a single parent. She also looks after her younger brother who has behavioral problems. Dealing with the challenges in her family is difficult work, so running has been her outlet for stress since the fourth grade, running for both cross country and track over the years. This outlet also proved effective in high school whenever keeping up with her intense amount of schoolwork was difficult. Working hard on being a good student is a challenge and having that release kept her head clear. Her identity as a runner wasn’t limited to the track. She also helped her mother pick up and make deliveries for Doordash to pay the bills. But being an avid runner since a young age proved to be a double-edged sword. She came blazing into her freshman year at James Lick High School with a 6-minute, 17-second mile time, but then she injured one of her quadricep muscles. Sophomore year, she came running back, only to get tendinitis in one of her legs. Still, she pulled through, staying on top of her competition. She made it to the Central Coast Section (CCS) Finals, the race that would determine if she could compete in the state championships but finished just one place outside of qualifying. However, she never let situations like these keep her down. “For me, it’s not about winning. For me, it’s all about times and improving,” she said. “I’d rather get third place and a faster time instead of first place and a slower time.” In her junior year during her cross-country season, she inexplicably slowed down. Suddenly, she couldn’t run as much as she used to and fell behind. That was when Torres discovered that she had iron-deficiency anemia, which seriously decreased her stamina. “It got to a point where I wanted to stop running,” Torres said. Torres also faced difficulties in class. The anemia, which left her lightheaded, made it hard for her to focus. However, with work, Arlet was able to maintain high grades. Even during this crisis, she never stayed away from her responsibilities of being a co-captain to her teammates. But she said doubts started to cloud her mind: “Do they care?” she used to wonder. Her coach and her teammates encouraged her but being slower put her through the wringer mentally. “I know it’s not being a nobody, but that’s how it felt,”

she said. “I know it’s a cliché, but you never know what you have until it’s gone.” Falling behind gave her a new perspective. She doubled down on her philosophy of constant improvement after that year. She powered through her senior year, coming back as one of the fastest runners at James Lick. She became team captain for both her cross-country and track teams. She made it to CCS finals, but once again was one place away from getting into the state competition. And not only did she regain her old speed, as a senior she posted a peak mile time of 5 minutes, 38 seconds, shaving more than 30 seconds off her top freshman-year performance. After all her hard work in track and cross-country, Torres came out of high school with a total of 37 medals, 34 of which came from sports. But her favorite medal is number 37, which she received for being named valedictorian of her graduating class. Torres now has a full-ride scholarship to UC Berkeley, where she plans to major in computer science. Torres said she’ll keep running in college, whether for the university or a club team. She routinely brings to mind some encouraging words her coach told her as she fought through adversity. “You have to finish your race with a smile, no matter what the outcome.”

"El dolor es temporal, el orgullo para siempre." Ese lema llegaría a definir a Torres como una estudiante estadounidense de primera generación, que vive con su madre y sus dos hermanos. Su padre fue deportado cuando ella tenía 8 años, y durante la mayor parte de su vida fue criada por un padre soltero. También cuida a su hermano menor que tiene problemas de conducta. Enfrentarse a los desafíos en su familia es un trabajo difícil, por lo que correr ha sido su salida del estrés desde el cuarto grado, correr tanto a campo traviesa como a lo largo de los años. Esta salida también resultó efectiva en la escuela secundaria cuando era difícil mantenerse al día con su intensa cantidad de trabajo escolar. Trabajar duro para ser un buen estudiante es un desafío y tener esa liberación le mantuvo la cabeza despejada. Su identidad como corredora no se limitaba a la pista. También ayudó a su madre con el quehacer, cosas como hacer entregas Doordash para pagar las cuentas. Pero ser un ávido corredor desde joven demostró ser un arma de doble filo. Llegó a su primer año en la James Lick High School con un tiempo de 6 minutos y 17 segundos, pero luego se lastimó uno de sus músculos cuádriceps.

En el segundo año, regresó corriendo, solo para tener tendinitis en una de sus piernas. Aun así, ella logró salir, manteniéndose en la cima de su competencia. Llegó a las Finales de la Sección Costa Central (CCS), la carrera que determinaría si podía competir en los campeonatos estatales, pero terminó solo un lugar fuera de la calificación. Sin embargo, nunca dejó que situaciones como estas la mantuvieran deprimida. "Para mí, no se trata de ganar. Para mí, todo se trata de tiempos y mejoras ", dijo. "Prefiero obtener el tercer lugar y un tiempo más rápido en lugar del primer lugar y un tiempo más lento". En su tercer año durante su temporada de esquí de fondo, inexplicablemente disminuyó la velocidad. De repente, no pudo correr tanto como solía hacerlo y se quedó atrás. Fue entonces cuando Torres descubrió que tenía anemia por deficiencia de hierro, lo que disminuyó gravemente su resistencia. "Llegó a un punto en el que quería dejar de correr", dijo Torres. Torres también enfrentó dificultades en clase. La anemia, que la dejó aturdida, le dificultaba concentrarse. Sin embargo, con el trabajo, Arlet pudo mantener altas calificaciones. Incluso durante esta crisis, nunca se mantuvo al margen de sus responsabilidades de ser co-capitana de sus compañeros de equipo. Su entrenador y sus compañeros de equipo la alentaron, pero ser más lenta la hizo pasar por alto mentalmente. "Sé que no es ser nadie, pero así es como se sentía", dijo. "Sé que es un cliché, pero nunca sabes lo que tienes hasta que se va". Retrasarse le dio una nueva perspectiva. Ella duplicó su filosofía de mejora constante después de ese año. Ella avanzó durante su último año, volviendo como una de las corredoras más rápidas en James Lick. Se convirtió en la capitana del equipo tanto para su equipo de campo como para pista. Llegó a las finales de CCS, pero una vez más estaba a un lugar de entrar en la competencia estatal. Y no solo recuperó su velocidad anterior, como estudiante de último año, registró un tiempo máximo de 5 minutos, 38 segundos, lo que afeitó más de 30 segundos de su mejor desempeño en el primer año. Después de todo su arduo trabajo en atletismo y campo traviesa, Torres salió de la escuela secundaria con un total de 37 medallas, 34 de las cuales provenían de deportes. Pero su medalla favorita es la número 37, que recibió por ser nombrada mejor estudiante de su clase de graduación. Torres ahora tiene una beca completa para ir a UC Berkeley, donde planea especializarse en informática. Torres dijo que seguirá corriendo en la universidad, ya sea para la universidad o para un equipo del club. Rutinariamente recuerda algunas palabras alentadoras que su entrenador le dijo mientras luchaba contra la adversidad. "Tienes que terminar tu carrera con una sonrisa, sin importar el resultado".

IOUX FALLS, S.D. — In the past decade, Americans ages 60 and older have increased the time they spend on computers, tablets, phones or watching T.V. by nearly 30 minutes per day. And that means the Baby Boomer generation and those older spend more than half of their daily leisure time in front of screens. That screen time also breaks down along gender lines, according to lead study author Gretchen Livingston, a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center. She said that's because women perform extra household chores and run more errands. "When we look at men ages 60 or older, they're spending more time on a daily basis on screens than women,” Livingston said. “So they're spending about four hours and 45 minutes on screens, whereas for women it's closer to four hours." Livingston noted that extra 30 minutes per day of screen time may not sound like a lot, but it goes hand-in-hand with how much time older adults spend sitting, which is associated with obesity, diabetes and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Data shows that during retirement transition, most Americans increase the time they spend sitting from four-and-a-half to six hours per day. Roughly 10,000 boomers every day celebrate their 65th birthdays, and three-quarters say they're internet users. Livingston said the amount of time those 60 and older devote to various screens is likely related to how much time they spend alone. About 87,000 low-income children who receive WIC benefits in the Golden State qualify for Medi-Cal but are not signed up. Karen Farley, executive director of the California WIC Association, said the eligibility requirements for both programs are the same, so there's no reason people should spend so many hours filling out extra forms.

"As soon as the child gets into health care, the better," Golden-Testa said, "because then we can get them the care that they need and identify any problems - should they arise - early, that could help them in the lifelong pursuit of health." Assembly Bill 526 would get the ball rolling on express-lane eligibility in the enrollment process. The federal government would fund most of the system interoperability changes at a 90/10 split. The state has already agreed to cover any extra children who enroll.

But even these alternatives may be less desirable than leaving ocean water alone and focusing instead on conservation and recycling of existing fresh water supplies. The non-profit Pacific Institute reports that stepping up conservation and efficiency measures already in place in water-wise regions like California could reduce annual water use in urban areas by as much as 57 percent. Meanwhile, recycling (and treating) freshwater and making a bigger effort to capture stormwater run-off could produce enough drinking water to quench Los Angeles’ thirst two times over.

A fitting allegory for our modern age. Indeed, we’re in that same boat today given that salty oceans cover 70 percent of the Earth’s surface while freshwater becomes increasingly scarcer due to human overpopulation and climate change. Globally some 700 million people lack access to clean water while droughts are the norm in many regions. Stepping up desalination—that is, filtering salt out of seawater to make it potable— seems like an obvious solution. But the two most common techniques, reverse osmosis, pushing seawater through membranes to separate the salt; and distillation, boiling seawater and collecting the resulting salt-free water vapor, both require costly amounts of energy and infrastructure. They also create a lot of potentially toxic “brine” as waste that can kill crops and other vegetation and render groundwater too saline to drink, not to mention negatively alter the chemistry of the ocean. Currently the world’s 18,000+ desalination plants pump 140 billion liters of

Ngai Yin Yip and his team of environmental engineers at Columbia University think their alternative method—“temperature swing solvent extraction” (TSSE)—can fix the problems of leftover brine, in turn making the desalination process cleaner and more efficient. TSSE uses a solvent that reacts to inexpensive low-grade heat to extract freshwater as efficiently as RO or distillation at

a fraction of the cost. Another promising alternative as pioneered by Penn State engineer Bruce Logan and colleagues is called battery electrode deionization (BDI), in which salty water is routed into channels with electrodes designed to capture salt ions and divert freshwater and salt accordingly. BDI is still in the R&D phase, but researchers hope it can eventually become a useful alternative to reverse osmosis or distillation.

Given the magnitude of the problem, we need to embrace all forms of increasing our supplies of freshwater, whether they involve old-school methods like recycling or newfangled approaches like technology-enabled desalination. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE10 AND NOTE10+

amsung just announced the Galaxy Note10 and Note10+, available for pre-order at 12:01amET on August 8 and hitting stores on August 23. I got my hands on them earlier this week, and they are… awesome!! Here’s everything you need to know about Samsung’s newest phones. OVERVIEW Samsung took a page out of Apple’s playbook and is now offering the Galaxy Note in two sizes: the Galaxy Note10+ (6.8” screen) and the Galaxy Note10 (6.3” screen). (For comparison’s sake, the iPhone Xs has a 5.8” screen, and the iPhone Xs Max has a 6.5” screen.) Both feel great, though the 6.8” may be a bit of a stretch for those with smaller hands. Samsung crafted every element of the Note10 to be “sleek, slim, and distractionfree,” and is targeting “next-gen achievers” and those with flexible work schedules (a number Samsung pegs at about 105 million people in the U.S.). The bad news up front: at long last, Samsung has axed headphone jack. You had a good run, buddy, but now you’re officially the way of the dodo. DISPLAY The screen on both devices is beautiful. Both phones have a nearly bezel-less Cinematic Infinity Display. The frontfacing camera is in-display (and centered for design balance and aesthetics). Both screens feature Dynamic AMOLED with HDR10+ certification and Dynamic Tone Mapping. PRODUCTIVITY Samsung redesigned the S-Pen (now with beveled edges) to make it an even more useful handwriting tool. Handwriting-to-text conversion (supporting 62 languages, including English) makes life after meetings way easier, and you quickly can format, share, or export your notes (to Word, PDF, plain text, or an image) in just a few taps.

The S-Pen also offers quick controls for zooming, editing, and taking pictures. “Air” actions are a new gesture language to offer more control in apps and games. This was one of my favorite things to try in person! The Note10 is still DeX compatible and uses a standard USB. (An HDMI cable is not required.) You can seamlessly drag and drop files between your phone and Mac or PC. You can also enable “Link to Windows” via Quick Panel to connect to your Windows 10 PC with a single click to see notifications, send/receive messages, review photos, and more. Even better: there’s no software to install. CREATIVITY Samsung improved the Note’s camera once again. “Live Focus Video” offers depth-of-field adjustments (to easily blur a background and keep focus on your subject), while the “Zoom-In Mic” helps isolate the sound you care about, while minimizing background disruptions. Can’t seem to capture still video? “Super Steady” can stabilize your footage — and can now be used in Hyperlapse mode. After you capture your video, Samsung is making it easy for you to edit your video right on your device with native video editing, aided by the S Pen. If you want more power and control, Adobe Rush3 (optimized for the Note) offers a deep suite of editing tools. Gamers and vloggers, take note: the Note10 now features a Screen Recorder feature so that you can capture what’s on your screen, add reactions, and annotate with the S Pen. Creators can flex their creative muscles via AR Doodle, where the S Pen lets you personalized photos, as well as with 3D Scanner, which uses the phone’s DepthVision camera to scan an object and create an instant 3D rendering of it. It’s super cool. GAMING Sixty percent of smartphone owners play games on their phone, and Samsung wanted to cater to this crowd. The Note10

features the world’s slimmest vapor chamber cooling system, which keeps your device cool while giving it the power it needs to deliver high-end graphics. An AI-based “Game Booster” monitors what you’re playing and tweaks your device for optimal performance and battery life. You’ll still eat through your phone’s battery if you game for a while, but you’ll likely get more playtime on the Note10 than most other phones. BATTERY Tired of having your smartphone die on you? A 30-minute charge will power the Galaxy Note10+ all day (as long as you use the 45W charger, sold separately). You can also get up to 100 percent battery in under an hour. The Note10 once again features Wireless PowerShare, meaning you can wirelessly charge any QI-enabled device via your phone. OPTIONS AND AVAILABILITY You can pre-order the Note10 starting Thursday, August 8 at 12:01amET. The Galaxy Note10+ will be available in Aura Blue (at Best Buy and Samsung. com), as well as in Aura Glow, White, and Black. There’s a 5G option available through Verizon Wireless for a limited time on August 23. AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile will launch at a later date.
