he racial and ethnic picture unveiled by the 2020 Census clearly reflects the demographic trends of recent decades: The color of the United States is becoming less white and more brownish-white. Both the absolute number and the proportion of non-Hispanic whites are declining, while people of Latino origin accounted for about half of the population growth: the almost 62.1 million Hispanics are now 18.7% of the country's population.
The statistics can also have a political reading: the one that will sway these new generations is the party that knows how to speak in the language of these young people, most of whom were born in the United States and live in a bilingual and bicultural space, although English is their dominant language.

Arturo Vargas, the director of NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials), is right when he states that the United States, “cannot address challenges such as poverty, poor health care, or lack of access to quality education without personalized approaches that improve opportunities and well-being for women, Latino families and children.” That is, within the priorities of the massive 3.5 trillion-dollar social infrastructure package that Congress is currently examining, social spending for youth in general, and Latino youth in particular should be seen as the seed of a longterm investment for the strength of the nation.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission took over the map-making duties from the Legislature after the 2010 census - so this is their second go around.

And so we may see significant shifts in the way the lines are, purely based on those demographic changes." In the past, lawmakers tended to draw districts that protected incumbents and diluted the voting power of communities of color by packing them into one district or spreading them out into multiple districts. Now nonprofits such as All On The Line are prepping community groups to speak out - with a prog ram called Redistricting U - which held its most recent online class August 17th. The Citizen's Redistricting Commission already has started taking public testimony and has many hearings coming up. The schedule is online at Wedrawthelinesca.org.

Feng encouraged everyday citizens to get involved in the process. "You do not need to be an expert at redistricting," said Feng. "If you can say, 'Here's where we're at, here are the issues that we care about,' that is what the commission needs to hear."

new COVID-19 variant — named lambda — has arrived in California.
The emerging lambda variant has been popping up in the news as it spreads rapidly throughout South America. In California, at least 152 cases have been reported, the first as early as September 2020, according to state public health officials. Experts say lambda could be more infectious and resistant to vaccines than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus. But there is no evidence, at least so far, that it’s as infectious as the delta variant that now dominates California. So do Californians need to worry about this new variant? Not just yet, infectious disease specialists say. Here’s what you need to know about lambda. What is the lambda variant? The lambda variant — also known as “C.37” — was first reported in Peru a year ago and it’s now spreading across South America, according to the World Health Organization. Researchers say its unique new gene deletions and mutations signal that lambda may be more infectious than the original “wild type” coronavirus and may be potentially resistant to current vaccines, although more studies are needed. Because of those new genetic markers, the WHO in mid-June declared lambda a “variant of interest.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not yet done the same, in part because so few cases have been reported nationwide. The delta variant dominating U.S. COVID-19 cases is considered a “variant of concern” by both WHO and CDC, in part because it’s much more infectious than the original virus. Why am I hearing about lambda now? Lambda sparked headlines this summer after the WHO noted its rapid spread in South American countries, including Peru, Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil. It’s since been detected in 29 countries, according to the WHO, including Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Yes and yes. Since September 2020, the lambda variant has accounted for 152 genetically sequenced COVID-19 cases in California, according to the state Department of Public Health. The first case was found in September, with another 10 in March, 88 in April, 43 in May, eight in June and, most recently, two cases in July. The state agency declined to identify the counties where the cases occurred. Commercial and government laboratories test for variants by sequencing the genome of the coronavirus that caused a particular COVID-19 case and looking for mutations and changes in the virus’ characteristic spike protein. Still, not every COVID-19 case is genetically sequenced to determine whether it was caused by a variant, so the number of lambdacaused cases could be higher. Nationwide only about 15 of every 1,000 cases are sequenced. At least 1,311 sequenced lambda cases have been reported in at least 40 states since the start of the pandemic, with 18 cases identified in the past four weeks, according to the public virus genetic sequence database GISAID. Just one-tenth of 1 percent of the cases that are genetically sequenced involve lambda, according to GISAID. How does the lambda variant compare to other known variants? Scientists believe lambda is less infectious than the delta variant but more infectious than the original “wild-type” virus – at least in laboratory tests. But they don’t yet know how lambda’s different genetic profile will affect community transmission, severity of symptoms or vaccine resistance around the world. Some early clues are emerging. The Chilean researchers tested lambda against antibodies from health care workers who received the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine, finding that the vaccine failed to work as well as it did with the original virus. Also, New York University researchers tested lambda against the vaccines authorized in the

United States and found that the Johnson and Johnson one-dose vaccine was less effective against it and the delta variant compared to the Pfizer and Moderna twodose vaccines. Again, these are studies in test tubes that have not been peer reviewed, scientists caution. Just because vaccines appear less effective when pitted against lambda in a test tube doesn’t mean they won’t protect against severe illness, said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a University of California, San Francisco infectious disease specialist. Nearly all hospitalizations and deaths in California and nationwide have occurred in unvaccinated people. Do I need to worry? Not for now, Chin-Hong said. Lambda has been around for months, yet it hasn’t gained a foothold in California and other states so that should be reassuring, he said. So far the delta variant has definitively crowded out other variants nationwide. It now accounts for at least 86% of California’s sequenced COVID-19 cases and more than 94% of U.S. cases. “Delta’s aggressive all over the world and lambda hasn’t really taken off,” Chin-Hong said. “At the end of the day, it’s survival of the fittest.” CalMatters COVID-19 coverage, translation and distribution is supported by generous grants from the Blue Shield of California Foundation, the Penner Family Foundation and the California Health Care Foundation.

COULD LATINO VOTERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN WHETHER NEWSOM SURVIVES CALIFORNIA’S RECALL ELECTION?

“We believe in pluralism,” the governor said, as he warned volunteers that a Republican could win the race if Democrats don’t turn out and vote.
“The majority of my students weren’t even aware that they were about to receive ballots in the mail,” she said. “Some folks don’t even know what a recall is.”
“We celebrate diversity. And we reject people that want to microchip immigrants. How dare they talk about people like that?”
Most of Soria’s students, like most of the constituents she represents on the Fresno City Council, are Latino — a group that could help decide the outcome of the recall election. Latinos are the largest ethnic group in California at 39% of the population, and a growing share of the electorate at about 28% of registered voters. The group has been disproportionately sickened and hurt financially by the coronavirus pandemic that upended California’s political landscape and fueled the drive to recall Newsom. Democrats who want to keep Newsom in office and Republicans trying to oust him are all vying for Latinos’ votes in the Sept. 14 election. The bigger question, however, could be how many Latinos vote at all. So far, Soria hasn’t seen either side make much of an impact in her community. “If I’m thinking of folks in the neighborhoods that I represent, for Latinos, there’s not a lot of talk about (the recall),” Soria said. “People are kind of disconnected from it.” Newsom’s supporters are trying to turn around that lack of awareness and enthusiasm. The reason the recall is now polling as a close race — with 47% of the most likely voters saying they want to oust him, and 50% saying they want to keep him — boils down to the difference between who is registered to vote in California and who is likely to vote in the recall. If Democrats turn out as they do in regular elections, Newsom will probably survive. But 2 million voters signed the petition to remove him, and they’re the foundation of an energized anti-Newsom movement. Even though California is overwhelmingly a blue state with a multiracial electorate, researchers at UC Berkeley and UCLA found that conservatives and white voters are likely to dominate in the recall, while voters of color are less likely to cast ballots in the off-season election. “California Latinos are still reliably a predictable Democratic constituency,” said Mike Madrid, a GOP political consultant with expertise in Latino voting patterns. “The challenge is: What is turnout going to be? That is really the question for Gavin Newsom at this point.” Sitting it out Sofia Limon of Los Angeles illustrates Newsom’s challenge. The 25-year-old shoe store manager is a Democrat who says she voted for Newsom in 2018. She hasn’t been crazy about his job performance — he hasn’t done enough on climate change or homelessness, in her opinion — but she thinks the recall is pointless. So Limon may just sit out this election. “Considering how the candidates are shaping up, I’m not quite sure how I’m going to vote, or if I vote at all,” she said. “The candidates that are currently on the table, none of them are people that I personally would want to vote for. I don’t want any of them to win — not that I like Gavin Newsom either. So I’m still not quite sure what I’m going to do.” Nearly two-thirds of Latinos voted for Newsom when he was elected governor in 2018, and surveys this spring showed that most Latinos want to keep Newsom in office. But a recent poll by Emerson College found Hispanics are the only ethnic group with

aftermath, and the campaign is going to have to share with them what they’ve done,” Villaraigosa told CalMatters.
The first ad that GOP candidate Kevin Faulconer launched in his bid to replace Newsom featured the former San Diego mayor introducing himself in Spanish and telling voters that the recall is “la mejor oportunidad” to fix what’s wrong in California. A new radio ad this week by a committee backing the recall reminds voters in Spanish that “Newsom closed our local schools while sending his own children to an exclusive private school that stayed open.”
Still, Latinos who are more politically engaged are more likely to vote Democratic and see the recall as a partisan attack that could lead to a Republican winning the governor’s office and advancing policies that are harmful to immigrant communities, said Manuel Pastor, a sociology professor and director of the Equity Research Institute at the University of Southern California.

An episode earlier this summer featured El Cajon City Council member Phil Ortiz saying why he thinks Latinos should vote for the recall. “The question I ask my Latino neighbors is, ‘Has your life gotten better in the past two to four years?’” Ortiz said. “And the answer is no. Black and brown people are being pushed into poverty, permanently.”

And that could lead to apathy or anger during the recall. “This is Newsom’s race: Whether or not frustration with the last year is outpaced by some political education.”
The COVID factor

The lopsided impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic could also determine how many Latino voters abandon Newsom. Latinos have suffered disproportionately high rates of infection and death, compared with other ethnic groups in California. While Latinos make up 39% of the state’s population, they comprise 55% of COVID cases and 46% of deaths from the virus, according to the California Department of Public Health. And yet Latinos have received just 29% of California’s vaccine doses so far.
The governor has been trying to prove what he’s done for constituents with frequent public events around the state. At a health clinic in Fresno last month, he signed a bill expanding Medi-Cal health insurance to cover undocumented immigrants age 50 and older — a top priority of the Legislature’s Latino Caucus.
Many Latinos also took a financial hit from business shutdowns during the pandemic. Nearly two-thirds of California Latinos lost employment income last year, according to a report by the California Latino Economic Institute. It says that last fall, 43% of Latinos reported difficulty paying their household expenses. “It’s a community that’s been the hardest hit,” said Antonio Villaraigosa, the former mayor of Los Angeles who ran against Newsom in the 2018 primary. He said he disagreed with some of Newsom’s decisions during the pandemic, including school closures that dragged on for more than a year in most parts of the state, and restrictions on church services that were eventually overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. But Villaraigosa said he opposes the recall and wants Newsom to stay in office. “People are struggling with the pandemic and its

He does himself a real disservice by not acknowledging that.” Appealing to Latinos Christian Arana, a vice president of the Latino Community Foundation, said both sides in the recall fight should engage Latino Californians as a bloc of voters that is both large and diverse. Older Latinos might respond to conservative messages or Spanish-language television ads, while younger Latinos are likely native English speakers, many of whom voted for Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont for president. “We have been a community that has been living in a society that has been celebrating us as essential but treating us like dirt.” -CHRISTIAN ARANA, A VICE PRESIDENT OF THE LATINO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION California’s 8 million Latino voters, he points out, amount to more people than there are in the state of Arizona. “That’s a huge demonstration of the immense power the Latino vote has in any election in the state of California,” Arana said. “We have been a community that has been living in a society that has been celebrating us as essential but treating us like dirt. If you’re going to ask me to vote in this recall election, well what’s in it for me? Both sides of these campaigns need to hammer that point and really mobilize this community.” Arana was surprised that Newsom’s campaign chose to launch an anti-recall ad featuring Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who came in a distant third in California’s presidential primary last year. It was Sanders — dubbed “Tio Bernie” in some Latino communities — who won here, in large part by exciting voters including Limon, the shoe store manager in Los Angeles. “Latinos really love him here. He really speaks to the younger generation,” Limon said, recalling the energy she felt at a Sanders rally last year. Would a California campaign stop by Sanders to back Newsom persuade her to vote against the recall? Limon couldn’t say for certain, but acknowledged that “it might have some sway on how I see things.”

he United States population is more diverse than ever and increasingly urban, according to new data collected in the 2020 Census. But overall population growth in the country has slowed, newly released Census Bureau data show. The Census Bureau released on Aug. 12 the first trove of narrowly focused information gathered in the 2020 Census. It will immediately be put to use in the redistricting process whereby states and local political jurisdictions re-draw political boundaries to create districts of equal populations for upcoming elections. The information will also be used in countless other ways over the next decade, for instance, to decide where new schools or hospitals are needed, or roads, or where it might profit a business to set up shop. “The U.S. population is much more multiracial and more racially and ethnically diverse than what we measured in the past,” said Nicholas Jones, Census Bureau director and senior advisor of race and ethnic research and outreach. Of the 331,449,281 people enumerated in the 10-question census form last year, 204.3 million identified themselves or other household members as white. There were another 31.1 million identified as mixedrace -- white and something else – and 2.7 million described as mixed race in a combination that did not include white. The 204.3 million ‘white alone’ population is 8.6% less than it was the last time everyone was counted, in 2010. The census questionnaire data on ethnicity parsed the population into the following racial categories: White, Asian, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Some Other Race. There was a separate question asking if the responding household members were Hispanic or Latino. Once those questions were answered, respondents could further describe themselves by tribe or other origins within those six initial categories. Being Hispanic or Latino is a matter of ethnicity, according to the census, not race. Sixty-two million people in North America identified as being of Hispanic or Latino origin, a 23% increase, and then chose a racial identification in a separate question. That growth was greater than any other population’s except Asians, up 36%, to 24.6 million, including those with mixed-race identifications. Black Americans, including mixed-race, now number 46.9 million, according to the Census Bureau, American Indian or Native Alaskans are 9.7 million, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander 1.6 million. Those choosing “some other race” alone or in combination were 15.1% nationwide, led by New Mexico at 32%, California at 31.6%, and Texas at 28.3%. Nationwide, 10.2% claimed “two or more races,” led by Hawaii, with more than 25% so identifying, followed by New Mexico at 19.9% There are 22.7 million more people in the United States now than there were when the last decennial census was taken, in 2010, enumerators found. But that population growth of 22.7 million is the smallest gain in the once-every-10-years count since 1990, and the smallest gain percentagewise since 1930. Most of that growth occurred in already-populous counties, the Census Bureau reports. If a county had less than 50,000 residents, it lost population. Counties of 50,000 to 99,999 people gained an average of 4.1% more; counties of more than 100,000 people grew by 9.1%. The top 10 most-populous cities remained unchanged, with New York at the top of the list, followed by Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas and San Jose. The only change was that now-5th place Phoenix and 6th-place Philadelphia changed places. All of them grew larger, as did metro areas in general (8.7%), while the more rural areas declined by 2.8%. Census Bureau statisticians compiled a “diversity index” that measured the likelihood that two randomly chosen people would be of different ethnicities. Overall, in the United States, that likelihood is 61.1%, up from 54.9% in 2010. In Texas, Nevada, California, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Hawaii and the District of Columbia, the percentage exceeded 65%.

hen the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered schools, the grades and mental health of millions of students declined. Several of the leading Republican challengers in the upcoming recall election of Gov. Gavin Newsom see this crisis as an opportunity.
In the past year, Democratic lawmakers supported legislation that would restrict charter school enrollment and funding, especially for virtual charter schools. In 2019, Newsom signed into law a controversial bill that would allow school districts to consider the fiscal impact of approving a charter school. Both were condemned by charter school advocates.
“It’s not unfairness, it’s life,” Elder said. “People who have more resources will always have more opportunities.”
“That is an inherent conflict of interest,” said Kiley.
Some charter schools have had success working with high-needs students, even closing the achievement gap for Black and Latino students.

Conservative talk show host Elder — who is running on the most radical school-choice platform of the four — said if elected he would declare a state of emergency for California’s public schools and fire the state’s 15,000 “worst” teachers. The California Teachers Association on Wednesday reported a $1.8 million donation to the anti-recall campaign, the fourth largest contribution so far in support of Newsom. The American Federation of Teachers, the national union, has given $250,000. While the candidates paint a clear picture of what their education system should look like, many aren’t ready to give up on the traditional public school system. Despite the state spending more money than ever to education, some experts say public schools remain underfunded. With the Newsom administration’s historic spending, they say, California is on its way to seeing what the current system can really do for students. With this year’s budget, Newsom continued his commitment to early childhood education, including funding to achieve universal transitional kindergarten by 2025. He also increased funding for schools in low-income communities as well as for special education. “For a long time, California ranked at the bottom of perpupil funding relative to other states,” said Julie Marsh, an education professor at the University of Southern California. “I don’t think we’re ready to throw in the towel yet.” Newsom recall: The Republican vision The major Republican candidates all say that under Newsom, California’s public school system failed students during the pandemic. They say K-12 education in California is controlled by special interests, primarily teachers unions, who supported extending the school closures. Throughout California, private and charter schools began offering in-person instruction while most public schools remained in virtual learning. Some parents flocked to these schools to get their kids inside a classroom and in front of a teacher. The Republican candidates say the charter and private schools that took their chances on reopening should be rewarded for their success. “We need to empower the parents to evaluate schools,” said Ose, a former California member of Congress running in the recall election. “I think parents right now are beat down by a system that pats them on their heads and dismisses their concerns.” For Ose, Kiley and Cox, who also ran unsuccessfully in 2018, empowering parents means having the state money follow the student, whether they go to a traditional public school, a public charter school or a private school.

The Republican candidates say that a few bad actors have tarnished the reputation of charter schools and that others throughout the state have made significant progress in closing the achievement gap for Black and Latino students. And if a charter school doesn’t deliver, the candidates told CalMatters, the state will hold it accountable — but they expect parents will, too. “If a charter school is not performing, you shut them down. Parents vote with their feet by going there,” said Ose. “That’s how charter schools succeed. The ultimate consumer is the parent.” A complicated reality Voting with your feet, however, isn’t so easy for all families: Charter schools aren’t required to provide transportation for all students. Parents who can’t drive their kids to school don’t have the option of exploring beyond their neighborhood schools. “It is a privilege to be able to vote with your feet because it means you have modes of transportation,” said Liz Guillen, an attorney at Public Advocates, a law firm that has advocated for charter school regulations. It also goes beyond material resources. Parents in affluent neighborhoods are often better equipped to explore the options for their children’s education.

Perhaps most importantly, their independence from the bureaucracy of school districts allows them to be nimble. They can decide their own curricula, offer internships for students and bring in experts to teach students. Ted Lempert, president of Children Now, a research and advocacy organization based in Oakland, says charters were initially designed to be hubs for educational innovation. “To me, the great thing about charters, the good ones, is that they don’t just educate students, they can help improve the whole system,” he said. “If some schools are doing a really great job, what can you learn from that and apply to all schools?” Charter schools in California were able to experiment with programs like project based learning and dual-language immersion, which have more recently become more prevalent in traditional public schools. Charters, Lempert said, became more polarized during the Trump presidency with the extreme approach of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, a staunch advocate for charter and private schools.
“It also means you’re savvy and educated or experienced enough to understand the system,” said Guillen. “We’re not all on the same page when it comes to navigating the public school system.”
“I can see charters having a positive impact on all public schools,” Lempert said. “It’s so politicized. DeVos messed things up for everyone.”

“There’s no reason we could not be achieving vastly superior outcomes,” said Kiley. “Before we pump even more money into the system, we need to make reforms.” While the billions of dollars the state gives to public schools sounds like a lot, per-pupil spending in California was among the lowest in the country, according to a 2018 study by Policy Analysis for California Education. But experts say with this year’s record-breaking $123.9 billion K-12 education budget, Newsom is taking steps toward adequately funding and fully realizing the potential of both charter and traditional schools. Per-pupil spending will go from about $10,000 to $14,000. This puts California closer to the mid-tier among per-pupil spending by states, but the amount is still much lower than states like New York and New Jersey, which spend over $20,000 per student. “We made great strides and significant investments this year,” Lempert said. “Newsom deserves some credit for that.” Candidate Cox said he would prefer not to cut the education budget while in the same breath saying he would try to cut school administrative spending. Other candidates said California’s education system focuses too much on the adults on campus. “I think we’ve gotten away from public schools being an education program and focused on it being a public jobs program, and that’s a mistake,” said Ose. But Marsh, the USC professor, said more adults are exactly what California’s public schools need. Compared to other states, California public schools lack nurses, counselors and social workers. “We have far fewer adults in our schools. We ranked at the bottom of all states,” said Marsh. “The adult-child ratio was at the bottom in every category.” Experts and left-leaning advocates agree with the Republican candidates, however, that parents should be able to decide where their kids go to school, and that successful charter schools do have a place in the future of California public education. But that doesn’t mean charter and private schools should replace the system. “You want parents to have some choice within the district,” Lempert said. “But ideally, every neighborhood school would be really strong. That shouldn’t be a dream.”

On the other side of the world, low-wage workers—many of them young girls— are crushed under the hammer of “fast fashion” (the mass production of cheap, poor quality, disposable clothing), laboring without safety protections or adequate rights. Fast fashion’s impacts on both the environment and human rights are evident, and slow fashion may just be the only solution to a greener future. First off, fast fashion revolves around the concept of speeding up production time while minimizing costs, which prompts producers to use the cheapest textiles and toxic textile dyes. Perhaps one of the most popular textiles, polyester is derived from fossil fuels and sheds microfibers that can end up in oceans. Another common material is cotton, which requires extensive quantities of water, pesticides and labor to produce. More important, fast fashion is constantly changing clothing trends—most consumers fall into this ploy and discard garments once they are out of trend. As a result, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in 2018 11.3 million tons of textiles ended up in landfills and 3.2 million tons were incinerated—releasing high amounts of greenhouse gases.

UGENE, Ore. - Pell Grants are a lifeline for many students attending college, but the federal aid covers far less than it used to. That's why student groups, colleges and universities are urging Congress to pass a measure to double the amount allotted to students. The maximum Pell Grant for this academic year is about $6,500. Jim Brooks, director of student financial aid and scholarships at the University of Oregon, said many have criticized the grants for not keeping up with the cost of college. "If you think about $13,000 in cost of attendance, that would have a big impact on students everywhere," he said. "So personally, as someone who's been a Pell recipient and has worked with lots of students at more than one institution who are Pell eligible, I think doubling Pell would be incredible." In the past, a Pell Grant covered as much as threequarters of the cost of attending a public university. Today, it covers less than a third. About 90% of Pell Grants go to families with incomes of less than $50,000. More than $290 million in Pell Grants came to Oregon in the last disbursement. Nearly 7 million students, or about 40%, are Pell Grant recipients, but they're still more likely to graduate with debt than other students. Brooks said folks are always concerned about the cost of college, and the pandemic has deepened those concerns. "We have certainly seen more families who've been financially impacted by the pandemic, in one way or the other," he said, "whether it's a parent losing income or a parent being laid off for a while, losing
their job completely because a business is closing." Brooks said he sees Pell Grants as foundational - for families, and for students' future success. "This is money they're going to have that they can use for educational costs and they aren't going to have to repay it," he said. "So, they reap the benefits of their education; that basically opens up job markets for them and it opens things up that they wouldn't have if they were not able to earn a college degree." The University of Oregon also has a program called Pathway Oregon, which helps Pell Grant-eligible students pay tuition and other fees through a combination of federal, state and university funds. Nearly 1,200 organizations, including 900 colleges and universities, signed a letter to Congress in March urging members to double the maximum Pell Grant amount. s most working American parents and students prepare to return to in-person work and school, after a year plus of remote work and virtual learning, it begs the question for parents: How prepared are you to handle not only back to school, but also back to after school? The impact felt from COVID-19 - whether it was a change in family dynamics of a parent or caretaker's health, employment status or housing situation - were profound. This past year, youth were faced with limited peer and leader interactions due to virtual schooling, restricted extracurricular opportunities and minimal socialization. According to a survey conducted by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 75% of parents report that after-school time actually causes as much or more stress than in-school time. On top of that, layer the emotional impact of COVID-19 and it makes for a nerve-wracking start to the school year. As we look to return to in-person learning, it's imperative that we understand the social and emotional development associated with the 20212022 school year. Boys & Girls Clubs of America, an expert in youth development, is determined to send kids and teens back to school better than ever and offers these tips to help take the stress out of back-to-school season for parents this year. Emphasize the importance of emotional development Thanks to a multi-year partnership with Kohl's, Boys & Girls Clubs of America is implementing programming at Clubs nationwide to promote and empower social and emotional development. After a stressful school day, kids and teens need mentors and trusted adults they can turn to in order to feel supported and better learn to cope with any challenges that may have come up during the day. Working parents aren't always readily available right after school to talk to their child, so utilizing affordable after-school programs can alleviate stress for parents, knowing their child is with trained, trusted adults and mentors. Create a safe space Each day 11 million children and teens leave school with no place to go, increasing their risk of being unsupervised, unguided and unsafe in communities across the country, according to a 2014 Afterschool Alliance study. And, since juvenile crime escalates during the hours of 3-7 p.m. according to the U.S. Department of Justice, parents have cause for concern about how their children spend their time during these critical hours. Parents can stay focused at work and have peace of mind that their kids are safe and on a path to success when they know their child has arrangements for supervised, after-school care with trustworthy adult leaders.
Get active, get healthy Increased screen time, more snacking and fewer outdoor activities among kids and teens became prevalent during the pandemic. In 2017-2018, obesity affected 14.4 million children and adolescents between the ages of two to 19 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fast forward to 2021 and pediatricians aren't yet clear on how the pandemic has influenced the prevalence of obesity among kids. However, many note they've seen an increase in body mass index (BMI) among children. Physical activity and nutrition education are paramount now more than ever. After-school time offers the chance for young people to take part in sports and fitness activities that not only burn off pent-up energy but allow youth to build their self-esteem, reduce anxiety and learn good sportsmanship. Also, having kids help with snack or dinner preparation not only offers an extra hand in the kitchen but also teaches healthy cooking and eating habits. Plan for consistent homework time The pandemic-related learning loss is a huge stress for many parents. As parents and their children prepare to catch up after a year of virtual learning, keeping up with homework is a priority. According to Boys & Girls Clubs of America's survey, nearly 60% of parents find it difficult to ensure their children are on a path to a successful school year. By making and sticking to a plan for how and when to tackle homework each day, parents and kids can make the most of after-school time. Whether it's at home with support from a parent or guardian, at a tutoring facility or at a community organization with academic programming, such as a local Boys & Girls Club, setting aside a specific time and place for homework will avoid headaches for parents and children alike. Focus on safe socializing After more than a year of virtual learning, children and teens are itching to be with their friends again. Alternatively, some may also have some social anxiety when it comes to larger group settings. Either way, after-school time provides an opportunity for youth to interact with friends, build relationships, reengage with peer relationships and work on their social skills. Ensure your kids and teens have a balanced after-school routine that consists of time spent working on academics and time with friends. Boys & Girls Clubs of America developed these tips based on the successful programs offered at their 4,700+ Clubs nationwide and supported by national partners like Kohl's. However, any parent or caregiver looking to help their kids during the transition from virtual to in-person learning is encouraged to use these insights as a guide for a successful back-to-school season.

ada vez con más frecuencia, se escucha de personas alrededor del mundo, las cuales están experimentando durante el sueño constantes pesadillas. Si se navega en Internet, se encontrarán millares de testimonios de personas que sueñan con monstruos que atacan a la humanidad. Lo más curioso del tema es que estas pesadillas están siendo experimentadas por millares de personas alrededor del mundo. Las pesadillas suelen acontecer en tiempos difíciles. Soñamos con Arquetipos, figuras universales comunes para la humanidad. No causa asombro que esto esté ocurriendo en los precisos momentos de tanta crisis mundial. Tormentas, tornados, huracanas, terremotos, inundaciones e incendios forestales agobian al planeta. Y lastimosamente, estos fenómenos naturales serán más recurrentes y más intensos. Llama mucho la atención las pesadillas referente a dos Asteroides que pudieran acercarse peligrosamente a la Tierra. Existe toda clase de profecías respecto al tema. Nostradamus, Bava Vanga, Edgar Cayce, San Malaquías y otros clarividentes afamados, hicieron mención de lo que podría ocurrir en esta década. Coinciden entonces las predicas de pastores, las

lecturas de clarividente y las visiones que reciben los espiritualistas. Dos rocas del espacio pueden llegar a la Tierra. Incluso existen videntes que se han atrevido a revelar la información de dónde se estrellarán. La mayoría de los que han recibido estos mensajes, visiones y sueños; afirman que un asteroide pasará muy cerca de la Tierra, pero no le cusará hará daño, sin embargo; el segundo asteroide podría hacer impacto en el “Triángulo de las Bermudas."
Desde las predicciones Bíblicas hasta las premoniciones de videntes actuales, todos coinciden en lo mismo. “Estamos llegando al final de una era, el ser humano, los animales y el planeta entero, atravesará por un proceso de evolución”. Situación que ya ha ocurrido con anterioridad. Por ello se está dando una epidemia de sueños que le revelan al soñador, los sucesos que están pronto a ocurrir. “El Año 2032” Otro año de la rata según el horóscopo chino; dicho de paso, año que trae consigo los augurios más funestos, otro año como el 2020 por ejemplo. Las pesadillas suelen ocurrirle a todas las personas. A unas con mayor frecuencia que a otras, dependiendo las circunstancias que se estén viviendo. Una manera de prevenirlas es haciendo oración, rezar plegarias, leer salmos y desear el bien antes de dormir. Las acciones caritativas, los gestos de bondad, la generosidad, la gentileza y la amabilidad, también son factores que influyen a la hora de tener sueños más gratificantes. Ahora bien, si tiene una pesadilla constante y en la misma siente desesperación, el sueño puede presagiar que se vivirá un peligro de algún tipo. El consejo es tener precaución y mucho cuidado. Si ha tenido pesadillas con seres irreales con apariencia de reptil, créame, no está sólo en esto. Hay que hacer una evaluación personal y observar nuestras fallas, siempre hay un margen para mejorar y ser mejores con el mundo que nos rodea. Lo que ha de suceder en el futuro, eso solamente el Todopoderoso lo sabe a ciencia cierta. Aunque se están recibiendo mensajes que dan una pauta de lo que ha de acontecer. Seamos más nobles y generosos, es eso lo que este mundo necesita.

tienen ninguna validez científica. La vacuna NO causa infertilidad. La vacuna NO contiene microchips. La vacuna NO te inyecta el virus del COVID. Todos estos son mitos erróneos y falsos, e incluso dañinos, porque evitan que las personas se vacunen y acaben protegiéndose totalmente.

espués de un año y medio de pandemia y cuarentena, todos tenemos ganas de hacer otra vez lo que más extrañamos, en especial reunirnos con nuestros seres queridos. Pero aún no podemos abandonar lo que hemos aprendido durante todo este tiempo de cuarentena y aislamiento: que la salud es una responsabilidad colectiva.
Las vacunas contra el COVID son la medicina exacta que llevamos tanto tiempo buscando para volver a un estilo de vida más normal. Las vacunas son seguras y efectivas y reducen significativamente las posibilidades de contraer y de propagar el virus, especialmente a familiares y amigos. Se han hecho muchos estudios clínicos rigurosos, examinando la eficacia de estas vacunas y la comunidad científica a nivel mundial ha sido muy clara en su mensaje: las vacunas salvan vidas.
Desafortunadamente, los hispanos seguimos rezagados en las cifras de vacunación y, ahora más que nunca, debemos continuar llevando un importante mensaje: tenemos que vacunarnos y tenemos que hacerlo hoy. Sabemos que los latinos tenemos probabilidades más altas de contraer el virus y de ser hospitalizados como resultado de la enfermedad, en particular porque estamos sobre representados en el importante sector de trabajadores esenciales, arriesgando nuestras vidas todos los días. Entendemos también que, en las comunidades hispanas, existen barreras de acceso, tiempo y lenguaje en relación con las vacunas disponibles. Pero igual que tenemos muchas barreras, hoy en día, también hay muchas opciones de ayuda. Las vacunas ya están disponibles en infinidad de lugares, con acceso más fácil para todos, y completamente gratuitas a todo el mundo por igual.

Aparte de estar luchando contra una pandemia de un virus letal, también estamos luchando contra una campaña de desinformación. Por mi propia experiencia hablando con mis pacientes, sé que muchos creen que los mitos en torno a las vacunas son verdaderos y no se fían de que las vacunas sean seguras. Mitos que la vacuna causa la infertilidad, que la vacuna contiene un microchip, que la vacuna nos infecta con el virus del COVID, por ejemplo. Por eso es tan importante reiterar que esos mitos no son verdad ni
Muchos de mis pacientes me dicen que piensan que las vacunas no son seguras por que se han desarrollado rápidamente. Eso es otra falsedad. El mundo entero se vio atacado por una pandemia de salud, pero también se vio sufriendo de una crisis social y económica. Como respuesta a esto, en pocos meses, todos los recursos de muchos gobiernos a nivel mundial se movilizaron inmediatamente para buscar una vacuna lo antes posible. Se priorizo esta vacuna por encima de todo lo demás, y fueron muchas las manos expertas, incluidos las manos de latinas y latinos como nosotros las que ayudaron a probar, evaluar y a agilizar el proceso de aprobación.
Los efectos secundarios más comunes de las vacunas suelen ser leves e incluyen dolor en la zona de inyección en el brazo, fatiga, fiebre, dolor de cabeza, síntomas típicos de una gripe, pero que duran por muy poco tiempo. Tengo pacientes que han sobrevivido al COVID y me dicen que prefieren tener estos efectos secundarios durante semanas en comparación con lo que sufrieron con el COVID cuando estaban enfermos. Los efectos secundarios son mínimos y temporales. No se pueden comparar con los síntomas que produce la enfermedad en sí.
