C

In 2016, experts anticipated that Donald Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric would detonate a record number of Latinos eager to defeat him. While it is true that Latino participation figures increased compared to 2012, in the end they did not make much difference in those states that defined the election. In any event, Trump won 28% of Latino support, a figure that was even slightly higher than the Latino vote for Republican Mitt Romney four years earlier. If an issue has the potential to become the hallmark of the 2020 electoral process, it is undoubtedly the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath of unemployment, at a time when half of the Latino community has reported layoffs or pay cuts Eleven weeks before the elections, 70% of Latinos disapprove of the presidential handling of the health crisis, which represents an increase over the 56% that existed in May, according to a new poll by Latino Decisions / Unidos US. As we get closer to the home stretch toward the election, Latinos seem to be more excited to vote. 69% of the Latinos interviewed said they were sure they would vote on November 3, an increase of seven percentage points over May. If enthusiasm materializes, Latinos could be decisive in eight battleground states where the proportion of Hispanics eligible to vote in 2020 is greater than the margin of victory in 2016: Arizona, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, Nevada, and New Mexico. In at least 4 of those states, Joe Biden leads Trump. If we assume as correct the estimate that up to 18 million eligible Latinos have not yet registered, It makes sense that the desire of numerous organizations such as Poder Latinx, Mi LULAC, Mi Familia Vota, Voto Latino and others that this key group of eligible voters be registered, verified in registration and vote, preferably in advance and by mail. Technology is helping. In the campaign of La Red Hispana you only need to send a text message with the word VOTAMOS to 52886 to start the registration or verification process for free.

INNEAPOLIS -- A new study reinforces data that show minority groups are disproportionately affected by the spread of the coronavirus. The latest research looked at hospitalization rates in 12 states, including Minnesota. The study was led by Professor Pinar KaracaMandic at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. She said in the states that were examined, Black residents were hospitalized for COVID-19 at rates well above their share of the population.
She said because the rate of testing doesn't tell the whole story when it comes to overall infections, hospitalizations are a more reliable way to identify racial gaps. "It does provide us a more objective view of the impact and the severity of the disease," KaracaMandic said. "We're also able to figure out are there differences in people who are experiencing this disease in a severe way that they also show up in the hospitals." In Minnesota, the study found Black residents made up nearly 25% of hospitalizations, while only accounting for around 7% of the state's popula-

tion. Researchers say they found similar results for Latinx and Native American residents in most of the states that were part of the study. White residents were hospitalized at a lower rate relative to their share of the population. The researchers say a more complete racial background of COVID-19 hospitalization cases is hard to come by in many parts of the country. And Karaca-Mandic said their findings underscore the need for other states to provide this information. "To fully understand the picture and to design effective solutions - and again, these solutions will need to vary by different states - we need this kind of data from all 50 states," she said. The study doesn't offer a contributing factor for the higher rates for these racial groups. But KaracaMandic and others suspect health care access issues and underlying health conditions play a significant role. Researchers have also noted that people of color are disproportionately represented in the service industry, jobs which can carry an increased risk of exposure to the virus.

A new study from the Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality finds students at four-year colleges pay two-and-a-half times more for living expenses than they do for tuition, and those at two-year colleges pay four times as much. Brendan Williams, senior director of knowledge at 'uAspire,' a nonprofit organization that focuses on college affordability, said many schools are doing what they can to help. "Colleges are opening up food pantries on campus, finding ways to subsidize housing," Williams said. "They're reducing those book costs. They're subsidizing transportation. There's a lot of things that colleges are doing to try and help with these indirect expenses." The research found older students are much more likely to be married and have children to support. So, since they often have to work while going to school, it takes them longer to complete college, and they accumulate more debt in the process. Williams noted the cost-of-attendance estimates typically found on college websites can be off by between $2,000 and $6,000 a year for older students. "So, I think there needs to be a reexamination of cost of attendance, and really thinking of the best way to apply it to what students look like today," Williams said. He added many older students also don't

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

AAA
ALNUT CREEK, Calif. – AAA Northern California wants to help drivers outsmart life by unveiling the most common reasons members are running into trouble on the road.
A review of data from AAA Northern California’s emergency roadside assistance and AAA Auto Repair Centers reveals battery issues are plaguing drivers across the state. In May and June of 2020, AAA Northern California saw a 34% increase in roadside assistance calls for battery service compared to the same time in 2019. That's equal to about 28,000 more calls in 2020. AAA Auto Repair Centers across the west have also seen battery services increase 23 percent since stay-at home orders were enacted. All other calls for service including flat tires, vehicle lockouts and tows declined compared to last year. “Many vehicles have sat idle in driveways and garages since directives to stay at home were enacted,” said Sergio Avila, spokesperson for AAA Northern California. “As drivers get behind the wheel, we’re seeing the impact of that idling.” The coronavirus pandemic has also caused drivers to forego routine vehicle maintenance. AAA Auto Repair Center data reveals a 17 percent drop in vehicle maintenance services since mid March. Vehicles typically associated with work, like trucks and SUVs, have been especially impacted by the stop-and-go of the economy. AAA Auto Repair facilities have seen repair services for these types of vehicles dramatically rise. Protect your ride before a break down To keep motorists moving, AAA Northern California is sharing five pieces of roadside wisdom that can help drivers stay safe on the road: • Drive your vehicle at least once a week for at least 30 minutes. This will help keep your battery charged. Take a longer route that you normally would when running errands to let your vehicle run more. • If you’ve postponed routine maintenance, make sure to have your vehicle inspected at a AAA Auto Repair Center or a trusted mechanic. • Check your tire pressure. Tires should be checked when your vehicle has not been driven recently. Low tire pressure can lead to blow outs, can affect handling and braking of a vehicle. • Check your fluids. Your engine, brakes, transmission, radiator, and power steering all need to have optimal fluid levels to function properly.
Proper fluid levels are essential for keeping your vehicle running smoothly. • Have a breakdown plan. If faced with a vehicle emergency, safely steer your car off the roadway. Turn on the emergency flashers to alert other drivers. Once in a safe location, request assistance from a road service provider. Under most circumstances, it is safest to remain buckled in your vehicle until help arrives. “Vehicles of all ages are susceptible to roadside trouble. Minimize your risk by being prepared and having a roadside assistance provider,” Avila said.

For California avocados, the sunny season symbolizes how delicious each moment can be, thanks to the bountiful availability of the fruit at their season’s peak. The California Avocado Commission (CAC) partnered with Chef Mike Fagnoni, Co-Owner and Executive Chef at Hawks Provisions and Public House in Sacramento, CA to develop an undeniable summertime recipe. In doing so, Chef Mike combined one of New England’s iconic and classic creations, along with the Golden State’s favorite, heart-healthy superfood to create the ultimate California Avocado and Lobster Roll. “I always prioritize the freshest and most local ingredients,” said Chef Mike Fagnoni. “By marrying sweet, Maine lobster with creamy California avocados and grassy dill, I was able to create an easy but unforgettably delicious dish that can be served at any occasion.” To fully take advantage of the summer’s produce offerings, be sure to include California avocados in all your seasonal dishes. Thanks to its “nutrient boosting” qualities, California avocados helps increase the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients like vitamins A, D, K and E. l verano significa algo diferente para todos. An emergency rule-making petition has been sent to the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security. It requests a nationwide inventory, increased production and prioritized distribution of respirators, gloves, gowns and other equipment needed to protect workers from COVID-19. Micki Siegel de Hernandez is deputy director of health and safety with Communications Workers of America, which represents health-care workers. She said six months into the pandemic, there still are critical shortages. "This is well past when the DPA should have been used, making sure companies are able to produce the equipment needed and get it to the right places," de Hernandez said. P
utting satellites up into the ionosphere—the layer of our atmosphere extending from 50-600 miles above the surface where a high concentration of ions and free electrons facilitate the reflection of radio waves—isn’t anything new. The Soviets beat us to the punch when they launched the first satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, but these days there are over 9,000 satellites overhead, the majority from U.S. companies and government agencies. But with Elon Musk’s SpaceX poised to launch tens of thousands of new ones in the next few years, many people wonder whether putting all this technology overhead is such a good idea. One concern is that all this hardware eventually breaks down and shed parts. Peter Greenstreet of the Institute of Physics reports that this so-called “space junk” orbits at some 7.5 kilometers per second—so fast that even the tiniest pieces create a potential hazard for space stations and other manmade or natural objects making the same rounds. Greenstreet adds that space junk falling to Earth’s surface is less of a concern, given that most of it breaks down into tiny pieces due to the heat and friction encountered upon entry to our atmosphere and thus stands little to no chance of hurting any people or property below. Another environmental issue with satellite proliferation is so-called “sky pollution.” By reflecting the light of the sun, satellites cause streaks of light across the sky where astronomers would prefer darkness for peering into the heavens and where everyday people will be robbed of their own views of a dark sky. But despite these drawbacks, there are plenty of good reasons to like satellites if you care about the environment. “From the International Space Station (ISS) to hundreds of
other observational satellites, remote sensing allows for climate and environmental monitoring,” reports Daisy Gill on Earth.org. “These imaging satellites are an incredible source of data for climate change research, enabling us to see the global changes on the planet that are happening more frequently, and with data freely available for anyone to view and use.” Examples include tracking changing oceanic temperatures, currents and sea level. Satellites are also key to understanding global and local precipitation and flooding patterns, how wildfires start and spread, the distribution of wildlife populations, and other indicators of environmental health. Satellites are also useful as early warning systems for natural disasters and extreme weather events. If we can figure out ways to clean up space junk, we can use satellites with less guilt. NASA’s e.DeOrbit project is focusing on seeking out and removing satellite debris in the upper reaches of the ionosphere. Meanwhile, the European Space Agency is hard at work on its own “capture mechanisms” to pick up space debris such as nets, harpoons robotic arms and tentacles.

A

Ramón Rodríguez y Ariana Greenblatt interpretan a padre e hija en la película nueva de Disney "The One and Only Ivan". Photo Credit: Walt Disney Pictures sumen de la historia en “The One and Only Ivan”?
¿Por qué recomendarías ver la película “The One and Only Ivan”?

Rodriguez plays George, an employee at the mall who helps the owner Mack (played by Bryan Cranston) with the circus and is caught in the middle of this big change within the animals. His physical costars are Bryan Cranston and Ariana Greenblatt, who plays his daughter Julia. Along with the physical actors, “The One and Only Ivan” has the voice talents of Sam Rockwell as the lead gorilla Ivan, and Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito and Helen Mirren. The following is a conversation with Rodriguez on the ins and outs of working on a film that involved shooting everyday inside a mall with performers acting in place of CGI animals, as well as what the film means in the time of COVID. To start off, could you give me a brief idea of the story in "The One and Only Ivan"? The story is based on a book by Katherine Applegate with the same title, which is based on real events. And, you know, it follows a gorilla that’s named Ivan that lives in a mall in the circus and is part of the circus. And it basically follows sort of his story as he's the star of the show of the main event at the circus, and how throughout the journey of the film, he ends up basically sort of questioning his story and where he's from and discovering. He has a journey of self-discovery and to keep a promise
Ramon Rodriguez stars as George in the Disney film “The One and Only Ivan”. Photo Credit: Walt Disney Pictures to an elephant in the show, he sort of promises that he's going to help protect a baby elephant. And in this whole journey, he learns who he really is and where he's from. He learns his history. And so, the beautiful message is a story about selfdiscovery and art and friendship and hope. But it's something I think that all of us can relate to right now in terms of feeling like we're captive and taking the time to sort of look within.
You have been part of many iconic drama shows and exciting films in your career. How was it different working on a film like this children’s adaptation, and with such diverse cast? I mean, you know, what was really special about it was obviously just the overall mesELO_3-34x4-75.pdf 1 sage. And, you know, this movie has that Disney magic
where it just makes you feel good inside. It's heartwarming. And I have to say the process of making it was incredible. We had a wonderful cast and we all kind of lived in this circus during the whole filming. We shot this whole thing in a mall and we lived in this mall. [It’s] kind of one of the most inter8/7/2020 4:00:36 PM esting [things] because I went to the same place every day
Can you tell me a bit about your character of George? George is an everyday, hardworking guy, who works at the circus along with Mack. [George] is incredibly loyal to [him], he runs everything from taking care of the animals to cleaning, to helping run the show. All the meanwhile, he has a daughter that he brings to work with him, and he has a sick wife at home. You know, he's someone that I feel like is very much just a humble kind of guy that's holding things together, that's doing the best he can to provide for his family to support Mack. And he's been with Mack for a long time, and, you know, he's not someone that's sort of calling for attention, but I feel like he's somebody that a lot relies on, the job needs him and his family needs him. And he's, I think, like a moral sort of compass where at the end of the film he's kind of forced to make a tough decision and what I loved about him particularly is that he's a positive role model for his daughter, and I think in that moment when she asks him to make the tough choice, he does the right thing.

for work. So, I kind of developed a routine, like George, of going to the circus and going to work and showing up there. So that aspect was really interesting. But the overall vibe is so positive and playful and creative. Part of that I think is, (Director) Thea Sharrock has a wonderful sensibility and wanted to really make sure that the tones and themes and messages of this movie were executed. But, you know, Bryan would come in with his creative energy and enthusiasm and ideas and we would talk about scenes. Arianna would come in with just that childlike magic and wonder and hope and optimism of her own energy. And it was just a wonderful vibe. It was, you know, really creative. And we all just hung out, you know, like they would yell, cut, and then we would just hang around and start talking. We played a lot of games with Arianna, like I Spy and all kinds of fun stuff. Arianna and I developed our own little fun handshake. And it was like a family, you know, really was like a special little family that was shooting in this mall that was in London in Pinewood Studios. It was bizarre, but really, really special. So, in terms of the filming with the CGI, how was that like compared to the work you did in "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", what was the difference there for you? Yeah, what was really great was, you know, like you said, I've done it where we have nothing there. You know, it's just a green screen. I've also done it where there is like a pole and a tennis ball and you have to act against the pole,
Also, with Ruby, the baby elephant, there's another wonderful stunt performer would climb into the small baby green elephant suit and he would start behaving and walking around like a baby elephant. After a while, you just sort of were like, "yeah, that's the baby elephant." You didn't even question it and it became so real that when they would yell "cut" and the person playing Ruby would stand up, it would freak us out, like “wait a minute, why is this elephant getting up on its hind legs?" You know, it was a really great to have people playing those characters that we could act off of and react to. Thanks Ramon, for your time. Now my final question. I was wondering why you would recommend "The One and Only Ivan"? I would recommend this, especially right now. I think when we first made this film, we were not going to know the situation that we're all living in today, which is [being] in quarantine for the most part, and we have to stay in our homes. And ironically, I think that really resonates and parallels a lot of what this story is about which is Ivan, who is in the circus and slowly discovers his history and where he's supposed to be. I think part of that this is what this country and what a lot of people who are home are going through, sort of being introspective and reflecting and spending time with family, maybe even growing and evolving. So, I think the message of this film [is] a beautiful, positive one, and I think we can all use some of that right now. But it also has some really deep messages that I think resonate more so now just because of what we're all dealing with. “The One and Only Ivan” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on August 21, 2020.
