DO NOT DROP OUT OF SCHOOL; ACQUIRING KNOW-HOW IS VERY IMPORTANT Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR
S
ummer's end is being indicated by this Labor Day weekend and by school's beginning their annual academic training schedule. Youth under age 18 are required to be enrolled in some education and training process, usually at a publicschool system (district). A general theme needs to be stated: The reality is that elementary, middle and high school education processes really are the beginning of an individual's capability to learn from their own life's journey and experience. What is very essential is to learn to communicate effectively along with the acquisition of a system of logic which enables decisions to be made. Much of what a child learns about what is right (or wrong) happens in the home which is why a child with only a single parent ends up being disadvantaged. The example provided by fathers (the male) and mothers (female) are gender oriented. Thus, a child raised by one parent, usually the mother, does not experience the many examples of human male behavior which traditionally focusses upon being the principal provider for the family unit. This family unit is the building block seen in all cultures and societies. Couples who married and begat children have a responsibility to do everything to stay together as a family
unit for the sake of the children and their educational up-bringing. It is this family unit, which is ethically, morally and legally responsible for their children. After all, education of any child begins at home and is traditionally initiated by the mother who teaches a child its initial language skills when nursing. Communication and relationship skills are very important because both influence an individual's ability and capacity to learn a vocabulary. What a child learns at home from parents is a basic social vocabulary which is used to enable interpersonal relationships. The most important thing to learn is the capability and ability to “know when you do not know coupled with an ability to ask questions addressed to someone who becomes your mentor. While schools focus on teaching socialization skills, reading, writing and mathematics, the motivational forces which push or drive an individual's learning is usually enabled by the parental training skills. It is very important to never squash a child's curiosity and to always enhance a child's safety and security. Today, many electronic devices exist which enable the education process especially by providing easy access to the current state of the art knowledge and information which is archived in public libraries. Business mogul Andrew Carnegie was very instrumental in the establishment of a public library in each community. By making knowledge very accessible, the American society became highly informed which
enabled its skilled labor capacity along with its ability and capability to be creative and innovative. It takes knowledge to enable those efforts which resolve current issues. While everyone is uniquely endowed with his/her own potential, its development depends upon learning the basics: Reading, writing and mathematics. I would add one more: Learn the vocabulary pertinent to your personal interests. Especially learn basic communication skills, business's ethical practices; and the management of your cash flow (financial management). The management of the resources available to you for your personal development and use is very essential. No impoverished individual today needs to feel limited to being able to become informed and educated. However, the first steps are to determine what you want to do with your future life, and do not be afraid to try becoming a professional in any field. One essential is to learn the learner's vocabulary for that field first because that enables one to begin the conversation with experts or to acquire the knowledge by reading and attending courses. I am very proud of my brother Michael, a high school graduate, who became a self-taught expert about firebricks. These are special bricks used to line furnaces which produce and handle motel metals at temperatures exceeding 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. These refractory bricks enable basic metal industry, especially the steel industry. Mike, a brick-
layer, a laborer, became an expert known to the steel industry whose management would call him out of retirement to come look at this situation when university degreed consultants could not resolve an issue. Mike was self-taught in refractory brickworks; smelting of metals, and the industrial processes involved - and he usually resolved the issues he was asked to look at as a consultant. But then, Mike had become a multi-disciplinary expert who knew not only his refractory knowledge, but also smelting processes; and those processes used by metal producing industries, Mike had become a multi-disciplinary steel production expert who learned to do more than just lay those refractory brickworks. Mike's proudest moment was when he was asked to be a consultant at a steel mill located in Monterey, Mexico. And he did resolve their problem which had been looked at by metallurgists and engineers who had book-learning', but no applied experiences. I bring Mike's acquired expertise up, because many impoverished individuals can find work at the bottom of the career ladder, just like Mike. But, when each employee begins to observe and ask questions about the knowledgebase being used, then, over time, you may develop a knowledge base which is very valuable and useful. Ant it enables you to earn your keep. This Labor Day Holiday may be used by you to resolve to learn more about the work you do in the current employment you have. Production processes;
supply systems; retail systems; etc. all are based upon past experiences which are proven productive and effective. Many of these cannot be demonstrated in the classroom or described effectively in textbooks. It takes a hands-on approach to learn (ang be willing to share your knowledge with colleagues who reciprocate the know-how information sharing process. This is what gives American skilled labor it's superiority. Never just go through the motions of doing the work on your job. That work may teach you more than you learned in school. Understand that this process is an example of learning from life for life's living enhancement. My recommendation is for youth to stay in school because your job is to learn how to learn from your life's experiences, and you will have those experiences. Learn to use knowledge's facts and paradigms. Be willing to take reasonable risks to learn what field is for you and know that as you mature with experiences you will expand and change, but never lose your integrity nor curiosity. Do enjoy your Labor Day Holiday. I hope you commit to learning from your own life's experiences. Understand that your basic education will provide you with the skills needed so stay in school to learn those skills very well. Finally, it is in school where you will make friends and associate with colleagues who will provide you with references and referrals essential to being successful. Success requires an ability to form and be part of productive relationships. Enjoy your Labor Day Holiday!

Carne mexicana. Translation by Oscar Arteta for Ethnic Media Services.

HOW HATE REACHES A TIPPING POINT: MEXICANS ON THE MENU lose his knife and get tossed off the third tier. The initial victim would pick up the dropped knife and start stabbing one of his attackers. In the melee, the second attacker would get throttled by that chair and also go to the hospital. The third knife wielding attacker would eventually get stabbed bad and learn hard the lesson how it ain’t no fun when the rabbits got the gun. A week later the Spirit of Chaos dialed up the mayhem and moved next door. A prisoner in JUnit would be stabbed 32 times. After multiple surgeries he’d survive, lose a kidney, a finger, and 150 pounds. Barely dodged being killed. Of course, you know where this story is going. Next door. The Dark Spirit drifted.

ou’d see this phenomenon in prison. A guy in H-Unit would get beat down real bad with a heavy weight belt and get sent to the hospital with eye damage and missing teeth. A couple weeks later a guy in I-Unit would get attacked by three prisoners with knives on the third floor but the victim’s boyfriend would run up there with a metal folding chair and turn the tide. One guy would get smacked in the head with a chair,
Like Evil was born in that first burst of improvised weight belt violence and grew legs and moved next door. Then it grew emboldened with the second clash of men and blades, grew desire for more blood in the next unit, and finally grew so powerful it picked up speed. To K-Unit. Within a week a prisoner would be slaughtered in his bed. Dead Eye told me a guard told him the dead man’s eyeballs were resting on his cheeks. We all saw it coming. Talked about it. Like something malevolent was moving through the buildings and we all hoped it wouldn’t pick us to land on. But we all felt it’s inevitability. Trained as we were to know how insecurity lurks in every heart and can turn any boy into a lethal missile if directed at
someone with the right velocity. We knew the fear was building and so the temperature was rising so the violence would get more baroque. And swifter.
reached a tipping point so they’re gonna continue to point the tip of their gun at us until the nation fights through another civil war and a bunch of us are dead and the survivors simply get tired of all the killing.
I’ve many times experienced this sort of Violent Tipping Point. I started robbing one bank at a time. I continued robbing one bank at a time, but with greater frequency. Then one day I robbed two banks in one day. Eventually I robbed a bank then the one right next door, before I got to my car, with the police on the way. I suppose that time I robbed four banks in one day was inevitable.
Like in prison, after the K-Unit murder, tensions subsided in the prison for a while. Everyone took a long collective breath. Except the dead guy. No more breathing for him. Fortunately, for him, only the dead know the end of strife and civil war. Sorry to say, but in this country the dye has been cast. It’s useless for sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism if wolves and lions got a whole other opinion on the matter. And the white supremacists with three hundred million guns in this country do. So, no lion will be lying near a lamb anytime soon. Unless by lamb you mean lamb carnitas tacos. Then yeah, that’s what’s on the menu. Mexican meat.
At some point early in every Revolution or Civil Wars in history they all reached a tipping point where they just had to happen. No turning back. No such thing as a reverse birth. The clock had been wound so there was nothing to do but wait to watch it strike. The Reformation tried to happen for a couple hundred years before it finally broke out with Luther. The conditions were set. So, the alarm rang.

The physics of rage, the propulsion of the chaos it unleashes, takes a long time to burn itself out once unleashed. Societies break down in terrible bloody ways and the mayhem becomes fuckin gothic. Then the neighbors that survive come back home and repair shit. Till the next great falling down. Think Rwanda. Or the Bosnian War. Things fall apart. The center cannot hold. Ashes to ashes. We all fall down. I believe we’ve reached a tipping point in this country. The fragility of the white male ego has

shley Diaz excels on the soccer field at San Jose’s Luis Valdez Leadership Academy, but off the field she struggles with anxiety. “It’s really bad there,” she said, referring to how she felt playing for her school.
Although she was captain on her team and a top player, the rising junior felt unsupported by her coach. If she failed to follow specific plays during a game, she wouldn’t get playing time on the field. She said her mental health suffered as a result. “My support system was food, but I could rely on some of my teammates,” she said. Student athletes like Diaz are pillars of many high schools. They often are under enormous pressure to be star students and athletes, yet they are vulnerable to mental health issues. In California, 30% of adolescents are at risk for depression, according to the 2019 Kids Count Profile released June 17 by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. In addition, 20% of teenagers suffer from mental health issues, according to TeenMentalHealth.org, a nonprofit that works to improve the mental health of young people. Diaz said she understands that it can be difficult to be a student athlete, but when she comes to practice, she wants to do what she loves. She’s not the only student athlete to feel this way. The problem continues in college. Thirty percent of female athletes and 18% of male athletes in Division I schools suffer from depression symptoms, according to a 2016 study by researchers at Drexel University and Kean University who surveyed 465 athletes. Francisco Martinez, who plays soccer for Santa Clara Sporting Club, also struggles with depression. During his junior year at Luis Valdez Leadership Academy, he had a difficult time balancing school, work, his social life and competitive and school soccer. Although Martinez felt alone, he could rely on his club coach for support. “Soccer is the way I cope with things, and when things conflict with soccer, I’m kind of in a difficult situation.” he said. It’s even harder when coaches don’t understand or aren’t available to help their athletes. David Jacobson, who was a longtime marketing communications leader with the Positive Coaching Alliance, said trust between coaches and students is important. “If you say that you’re there for the athlete – be there,” said Jacobson, who coached youth basketball, softball and baseball teams on the Peninsula for 14 years. “If you show that you aren’t there for them, they won’t come to you when they need help.” Jacobson, who went on to found the Bay Areabased InkFlow Communications, said it can be hard for some athletes to accept that they need help. Coaches just have to be prepared to help when the students are ready.

Shelsy Perez, a volleyball player from Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School, said she is one of the lucky ones because she was able to get help for her anxiety. “I didn’t feel like I would be able to finish my work. We had games, practice and homework, and I procrastinated a lot,” Perez said. “I felt like I wanted to give up.” When her coaches and teachers noticed that she was no longer showing her bubbly personality, they approached her with the idea of going to a counselor. “I was reluctant to get help,” Perez said. “I denied it because I didn’t think I needed it.” Perez thinks the fairly small size of her high school worked to her advantage. “I think it’s ignored a lot like in big public schools,” she said. “It’s [mental health] definitely a problem, and it’s one of those things that’s kept in silence,” Martinez said.

CRUISING IN COLORFUL LOWRIDERS, DENVER CHICANOS CELEBRATE THEIR CULTURE ENGLISH

enver - As they have done every week for the past half-century, Chicano and Mexican families parade down a busy boulevard on Denver's west side each Sunday afternoon to show off the workmanship and colors of their customized lowrider cars in celebration of their culture and traditions. But this Sunday, unlike previous ones, the parade had a special status since it was the first time the state capital of Colorado officially recognized this custom as "A Cruise down Fedz Day." Down Federal Boulevard, that is. This is a day of "family, love and art," the basis of the display of these showy, close-to-theground cars with sophisticated hydraulic systems. "We work hard all week long," Javier Hernandez told EFE about why their tough daily labor deserves the rest, relaxation and fun of these Sunday lowrider cruises. Hernandez, a construction worker, acknowledges that this cruise, often at very slow speeds with music turned up as loud as possible and even with loudspeakers blasting out popular old songs like "La Cucaracha," might sometimes make residents along Denver's north-south Federal Boulevard feel like pulling their hair out.

But Mexicans and Chicanos were not always able to cruise down Federal Boulevard as freely as they do now. In the 1980s and '90s the drivers were often arrested by police who considered them street gang roughnecks. Though it took time, the steps taken by local groups were successful and since 2012 even got Denver police to join in the cruises with their own lowrider constructed by Hispanic students at a local school.

D
A Cruise down Fedz Day".
However, the demographic changes over the past 10 years on Denver's west side, with a population almost exclusively Hispanic, and the significant increase of traffic on Federal Boulevard, have affected in recent years both the volume of participation and the time the cruise lasts, which has been reduced to a few hours.
Furthermore, after the recent mass murder in El Paso, Texas, and with a view to the growing hostility toward Hispanics and other minorities, many participants prefer not to drive around waving big Mexican flags like they used to.
Ben Chavez, a community leader, is one of the organizers of "A Cruise down Fedz Day." One of his goals, he said, is "to invite all the neighbors to get talking with each other," which has had good results in the past.
Not in vain, because among the participants there is an enormous diversity that goes way beyond Mexicans and Chicanos. In fact, one of the most popular lowrider clubs, the Lowriding Zoot Suiters, includes a good number of African Americans and Filipinos.
"For Chicanos, lowriding is a way of life expressed through cars, style and art," said Lucille Rivera, executive director of Denver's Chicano Humanities and Arts Council (CHAC). In fact, the new exhibition at the CHAC Gallery, which opens Sept. 6, will be "Lowrider

Culture" and will focus on the "beauty of everything to do with lowrider cars," Rivera said.

ORTLAND, Ore. – As students head back to school, a visit to the doctor could be just what they need to start the year off right.

Pediatrician Katherine Clarke at Southern Oregon Pediatrics in Medford said the transition provides an opportunity to schedule annual exams or wellness visits for kids. Clarke said she sees wellness visits as "the jackpot of exams" because doctors can offer tips for the school year – such as how to deal with stress – and even catch something that could be affecting a child's health. "It's really astounding the number of times you uncover that there's been a day-to-day issue with something that wasn't ever big enough to warrant making a doctor's appointment," she said, "but its impacts on how a person's feeling or their activity level could be present every single day of the week." Wellness visits are covered for members of Jackson Care Connect and CareOregon. The coordinated care organizations also offer a gift card to teens as an incentive to come in for their annual checkup. Jennifer Vines, deputy health officer at the Multnomah County Health Department, said there are simple ways for students to stay healthy. She said parents should teach as well as model for their kids, covering coughs and sneezes, washing their hands before eating and staying home if they're sick. She cited other basic tenets for staying healthy as well. "It's getting enough sleep at night, it's getting regular physical activity, it's eating a healthy diet that has plenty of fruits and vegetables and lots of different kinds of food in it," she said. "So certainly, those all contribute to wellness and may help stave off some colds

ORTLAND, Ore.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. - Patients and health care advocates rallied on the State Capitol steps Thursday August 29 in favor of Assembly Bill 824, which combats so-called pay-for-delay deals, in which pharmaceutical companies pay generic drug makers to keep their products off the market. The first-in-the nation bill has to pass the state Senate Appropriations Committee by Friday in order to get a full vote this session. Assemblymember Jim Wood of Santa Rosa, who authored the bill, says generics introduce competition and help drive prices down for consumers. "If you can keep people on the brand name drug for longer, it costs your insurance company more money, your premiums are higher," he points out. "It costs all of us more money, and that needs to change." The bill would step up enforcement of laws against these types of deals, and place the burden of proof on the drug companies to prove they aren't making payments for anticompetitive purposes. Pharmaceutical companies argue this law would open up the floodgates for expensive consumer lawsuits, which could drive prices up.
A decade ago, the Federal Trade Commission asked Congress to limit pay-for-delay deals among drug companies, but lawmakers have not done so. Photo Credit: Unsplash The Federal Trade Commission says Americans pay at least $3.5 billion more a year for brand name drugs because generic companies take money to sit on their new products rather than release them. Wood says the drug companies' claim that this bill would actually slow the arrival of generic drugs doesn't hold water. "We hear from the drug companies that many of these agreements get the drugs to market sooner and they are not anti-competitive," he states. "And so I've asked, you know, 'Show me.' And no one's been able to do that." California Attorney General Xavier Becerra recently settled four lawsuits amounting to $70 million against drug companies over pay-fordelay practices.

epending on how deeply you want to go into environmental studies, there are many colleges that could meet your green-minded learning needs. A great place to begin research is the Princeton Review’s annual “Guide to 399 Green Colleges.” The 9th annual version was released late last year and ranked the College of the Atlantic (COA) in Bar Harbor, Maine as the nation’s greenest institution of higher learning. Completing the Top 15, in rank order: SUNY Syracuse, University of Vermont (UVM), Dickinson College, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Colorado State, Pitzer, Cornell, Randolph College, Stanford, UC Davis, Seattle University, Santa Clara University, American University and Goucher College. In general, colleges made the top of the list if sustainability factored prominently in their academic offerings, campus policies, initiatives, activities and career preparation for students. Princeton Review tallied data from survey responses submitted by administrators at 648 different colleges during the 2017-2018 school year. Several of the survey questions drill down on the given school’s sustainability-related policies, practices and programs, weighting 25+ data points to create a “Green Rating” score on a scale of 60 to 99 for each college surveyed, with 399 colleges qualifying as “green” with overall scores of 80+. It’s no surprise that COA, established in 1969 as the first American college to focus primarily on the relationship between humans and the environment, has topped the list for three years running. With only 350 students and 35 faculty members, small classes and focused learning are the norm at COA, which has been churning out environmental leaders for five decades. It became the first carbon-neutral college in 2007 and plans to be completely rid of fossil fuels on campus by 2030.

FEDERAL COURT RULING CHANGES HOW WE ELECT THE PRESIDENT ESPAÑOL

seven electors who went against their party's wishes in 2016.
"But I can assure you in 2020, both parties are going to be super diligent at nominating only presidential electors that they absolutely know will support the party's nominee".

Critics of winner-take-all laws argue that it's unfair to require electors to respect majority rule, especially when a candidate loses by a very thin margin in a given state and then forfeits all of that state's electoral votes. Koza says the case is likely to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
A new court ruling increases the likelihood that the 2020 presidential election could hinge on a single vote in the Electoral College.

acramento, CA - A new court ruling says states cannot penalize a delegate to the Electoral College for voting against the popular vote from that state. Comments from John Koza, chair of National Popular Vote. It just got a bit more likely - that the next election will be decided by a single vote in the Electoral College - in the wake of a federal court decision this week. A federal judge in the 9th circuit decided that states cannot replace or punish a so-called "faithless elector" even if it's one of 30 states, such as California, that requires delegates to support the candidate who got the most votes in that state. John Koza from the group National Popular Vote - says there were
He adds that President Donald Trump's re-election could easily come down to a single elector - because two states he won last time, Pennsylvania and Michigan, are now trending blue, and if nothing else changed, he would be at exactly 270 votes - the number needed to win in the Electoral College and be re-elected. "And one elector from either party, if they voted for someone else, that would deny Trump the majority in the Electoral College" Koza's group promotes the Interstate National Popular Vote Compact - where dozens of states have committed their delegates to whomever wins the national popular vote. The idea is to avoid the situation where a presidential candidate wins more votes overall but loses in the Electoral College, which has happened twice in the past 15 years. President George W. Bush won in 2000 despite losing by more than half a million in the popular vote. In 2016, Trump won despite earning 3 million fewer votes overall.
