the vaccine will be ready - coincidentally - around the November 3 elections, despite the fact that none of the biomedical projects in the United States have completed the clinical testing phase.

Es urgente por lo tanto una masiva campaña de concientización pública sobre la importancia vital y la seguridad de la vacunación, como un elemento esencial y una de las grandes esperanzas para atajar los contagios, las muertes, el sufrimiento… y regresar a la normalidad que todos anhelamos. ith more than 6 million COVID-19 infections and more than 183,000 deaths in the United States, which place the country as the most affected in the world, a vaccine is seen by large portions of society as a source of hope to contain the virus , reduce mortality and accelerate the return to a productive normality that allows a recovery of employment, income, prosperity and even emotional balance. Unfortunately, the vaccine is being manipulated for political-electoral purposes. President Donald Trump has assured that he is optimistic that

Although promising biomedical efforts in other countries, such as projects in Mexico and Argentina, point in the direction of the possible availability of a vaccine against COVID-19 for next year, the reality is that they have not been approved either and their possible potential impact on a large scale is unknown. But even assuming that the vaccine is available by the first semester of next year, worrying data has emerged that African-American and Latino minorities would be reluctant to take the vaccine, despite the fact that it has clear therapeutic benefits, either to avoid contagion, or to avoid extreme symptoms. Among the Latino community, only 37% of Hispanics will get the vaccine once it is available, another 37% are unsure and 23% are convinced they will not, according to a survey by The Associated Press-NORC released in May. The numbers are even more daunting for the African-American community: only 25% would get the vaccine and 40% would not for any reason. Even though the figures are better among non-Hispanic whites, since 56% would take the vaccine, compared to 16% who would not, it is clear that the issue of vaccination can become a bigger problem for public health unless large segments of the US population can be made aware that getting vaccinated is in their personal benefit and in the benefit of all. Incredibly, the issue of vaccination against COVID-19 has certain ideological features, since it is more likely that people who identify as Democrats get the vaccine, with 62%, compared to those who identify as Republican, with 43%. In a singular way, only 31% of those who define themselves as independent will take the vaccine. The figures are striking because there is an overwhelming proportion of the United States population, almost 80%, that considers the vaccine as an important factor for the reopening of productive activities and businesses. Therefore, a massive public awareness campaign about the vital importance and safety of vaccination is urgent, as an essential element and one of the great hopes to stop contagions, deaths, suffering; and return to the normality that we all long for. 'SILENT MIDDLE' URGED TO STAND UP AFTER PORTLAND SHOOTING

ORTLAND, Ore. -- A fatal shooting in Portland over the weekend has left tensions high across the country.

The shooting took place on Saturday after a proTrump caravan rolled through the city. The man shot was wearing a shirt and hat identifying the far-right group Patriot Prayer. Eric Ward is executive director of the Western States Center, which follows extremist groups in the West and is headquartered in Portland. He said our institutions have been unable to respond adequately to the recent violence at protests. "All of these deaths and injuries are preventable. They are unnecessary," Ward said. "They are symptomatic of the failure of civil society and democratic structures to rise above the bias and confusion of 'both-siderism.'" Ward said the Portland Police Department's re-

sponse to months-long protests since the killing of George Floyd in May has exacerbated the situation. Portland police still are investigating Saturday's shooting. Ward recalled the outrage in the wake of the Charlottesville rally in 2017, which was organized by far-right groups and where one protester was killed. "In just the last week, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and here in Portland, Oregon, Charlottesville happened again. But the nation seems less outraged. And that, to me, is dangerous," he said. Ward doesn't believe people care less about this violence than they did after Charlottesville. But he said people who are situated in the political center can't turn their backs on this moment. "It's time for the silent middle in this city to stand up," he said. "We can no longer just blame paramilitaries or protesters on the streets." Ward said city officials need to rein in Portland police and make it clear that Portland won't be used as a battleground for far-right extremists.

ORTLAND, Ore.

CAN A COLLEGE COURSE TEACH STUDENTS TO ‘UNLEARN’ RACISM? Jennifer Cross TheConversation.com Broadcast version by Lily Bohlke

One semester is all it takes to learn to become aware of your own thoughts and to actively choose to change your judgments and build a new capacity for empathy. When we endeavor to deeply understand other people's experiences, we also build the capacity and will for new actions. Like all things, it takes practice to make it a habit.

Public News Service

ORT COLLINS, Colo. -Many Americans are asking how they can be more sensitive to members of different racial groups, a desire fueling sales of books like "How to be an Anti-racist," and the presence of "Hate has no home here" signs in front yards. But how to achieve that goal is anything but clear. I am Jeni Cross, a sociologist at Colorado State University, and I've found an effective approach in my course Social Production of Reality. Can a college course unteach racism? Many of my students tell me it can. They say my course improves their tolerance toward others, allows them to put themselves in another person's shoes and makes them more willing to take action to end discrimination and inequality. Twenty years ago, I started asking this question on my final exam: "What is one thing you've learned from this class that you'll remember long after this class is over?" Year after year, about 25% of the class says something like, "I have learned to be more tolerant of people who are different from me." When this first started happening, I was surprised. I never once mention the word tolerance in class, nor is increasing tolerance a learning objective. When I asked for more

detail, every student detailed how the class increased awareness of their own thoughts, how they their increased effort to suspend judgment and made new efforts to listen and understand the viewpoint and experiences of others. Many also described taking new actions based on seeing their own privilege more clearly. One student said, "I will remember that some people's reality is different and not the same as mine. I learned a lot about others culturally and maybe a glimpse of what it's like to be a minority or 'different' in some way. That has helped me to be more compassionate." I used a survey to compare how students' attitudes changed in a variety of social science classes - not just my own. I found that student attitudes about their political ideology, empathy and race changed very little after most classes. My course stood out because attitudes related to both race and empathy improved substantially.

So what sets my course apart? I believe it is the focus on teaching students to be aware of their own thoughts and judgments and how those thoughts shape their actions. What does the course say about race? Rather than focus on race, the class explores theories which emphasize the social nature of reality. One example is the Thomas Theorem, which states that when people define a situation as real, then it is real in its consequences. Take baseball. Fans may argue with the umpire's call, but we agree to give the umpire authority and so the scoreboard and history books record that call, thus making it reality. Believing that there will be a toilet paper shortage can create one if enough people believe it, even when the supply of toilet paper hasn't changed. Race, like baseball and toilet paper shortages, becomes real because of how we see it, define it and then act toward each other based on those

meanings. Sociologists Michael Omi and Howard Winant wrote, "Race is not something rooted in nature... but it is not an illusion. While it may not be real in a biological sense, race is indeed real as a social category with definite social consequences." Race is created not from our biology, but from the ways in which we understand ourselves, interact with others and build our society. Why does 'race' feel so real? We are constantly reinforcing the idea of race and our individual identities. While our racial identities cannot be identified by genetic uniqueness, we have taught ourselves to see race in our skin color, facial features, hair texture and culture. Race then becomes socially and culturally real, with some really unjust consequences. Blacks are 3-5 times more likely to be arrested for possession of marijuana than whites. Black women are three times more likely to die

in a pregnancy-related death than white women. These facts are real, and they are produced not by biology but by social relationships, health and environmental inequalities, policies and institutional practices that treat Black men and women differently than white men and women. We are faced with a paradox. As long as we see and label race, we then act as though it is a meaningful difference, which ultimately produces unequal consequences. In contrast, if we act as though we don't see race or claim color blindness, then we are denying that race is a vital social category in our culture which shapes all our lives. Sociologist Eduardo Bonilla Silva argued that developing empathy with others is one of the prerequisites for redefining the racial order. While the students in my class call it tolerance, their descriptions are better named empathy. How can one semester matter?

All semester I tell the students, "In every moment, every interaction, you have a choice, a choice to repeat the scripts you were taught and reinforce our current social rules and experiences, or to choose a new path and create a new reality." Does the color of the instructor matter? Teaching about race and racism brings challenges for all instructors regardless of their own race. What's more, it is problematic to leave this challenging work only to instructors of color, who are a minority in American higher education. Building trust and being vulnerable, telling stories of my own mistakes and growth, makes it possible for a white woman like me to talk about race in ways that help white students not feel defensive and allow students of color to feel safe. I can't say I've always been perfect, but my students have been brave enough to teach me and learn with me to build our capacity for empathy and action. OS ANGELES - The Parkinson's Foundation, an organization that works to enrich the lives of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) by improving the care they receive and promoting research in the search for a cure, announced this week its fifth annual conference in Spanish that will take place virtually on the Zoom platform. The conference will focus on providing the Spanish-speaking community with information related to the treatment and management of this disease. This program, run by a leading team of physicians and activists, is especially designed for Hispanics and Spanishspeaking people living with Parkinson's disease, their caregivers, their families, and the health care community at large. "Forward: Sailing the Parkinson's Sea" will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2020, 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. PT. This year, the conference will be broadcast live via the internet using the Zoom video calling application.

The event is completely free and open to the public. Those who wish to participate must register by visiting www. Parkinson.org/Conference or by calling the bilingual helpline at 1-800-4PD-INFO (473-4636). All sessions and activi-

ties will be carried out in Spanish. "Although Parkinson's is more prevalent in Hispanics than in any other ethnic group in the United States, studies confirm that many Hispanics receive less attention when it comes to accessing necessary information about Parkinson's treatment and care," said Dr. Fernando Cubillos, general director of research programs at the Parkinson's Foundation, adding that “as part of our mission to decisively address this problem, we are hosting this conference to better serve and empower Latinos living with PD. through specialized care, education and support efforts focused on the patient and the community." The conference will cover topics requested by the community, including how to prepare for the future, how to make medical decisions, and how the family can provide better care. The conference will also have a panel discussion, question and answer sessions, dance demonstrations, and exercises.

rom the get-go, Donald Trump has been no friend to the environment, and he has used the highest office in the land to gut environmental protections and conservation initiatives—and open up natural resources to the highest bidders—at every opportunity. That the public hasn’t heard much about this is most likely due to the fact that Donald Trump has given the media so much else to worry about, leaving environmental coverage more of an afterthought in the constantly evolving “breaking news” cycle. Even before he took office in 2016, Trump had declared global warming a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese to hurt our economy, and vowed to overturn Obama’s huge win to curb U.S. emissions, the Clean Power Plan. Trump also threatened to pull the U.S. out of the landmark (but voluntary) Paris climate accord. When he became President, he made good on those promises, horrific as that may have been to environmentalists who had worked a lifetime to achieve the goals thrown asunder. But Trump wasn’t done there. He then got busy loosening regulations on everything from toxic air pollution to methane flares to fuel economy standards to wildlife protections. Criminal prosecutions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are at a 30-year low thanks to lack of inspiration from above. Trump, once and always a developer lest we forget, has also worked to weaken the Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act as well as to downsize two recently designated national monuments (Bear’s Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante). He also went against the better judgement of his joint chiefs in December 2017 and took climate change off of the list of national security threats, despite that fact that extreme weather events pose a bigger risk to the American people than terrorism. More recently, under the radar compared to higher-profile scandals, the Trump administration finalized rollbacks to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) that speeds up permitting for federal projects like pipelines, highways and power plants. Long gone are the onerous and time-consuming permitting procedures that used to dog unscrupulous developers and protect key wildlife habitat. And in July 2020, the Trump administration started moving forward quietly with petroleum exploration in the sacrosanct Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which environmentalists have been trying to protect from drilling since it was established by Jimmy Carter executive order in 1980. “All told, the Trump administration’s environmental rollbacks could significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions and lead to thousands of extra deaths from poor air quality each year,” said The New York Times.

LAZ ALONSO AND THE DRAMA OF SUPERHEROES One of the Stars of “The Boys” Touches on What It’s Like to Work on a Gritty Fantasy Show That at Times Mirrors the Social Unrest of Real Life

I

Arturo Hilario El Observador

have to come back to The Boys. I mean, he had a good family, he had his wife, he had his kid. He was doing something that made him happy. Why would he risk all that to come back to this, to living in [and] hiding in and out of crazy hideouts out, stealing cars, using beat up cars to get around in?

f you have never seen Amazon Prime Video original “The Boys”, it is quite an experience. Drawing it’s story from the comic of the same name, this gory, hilarious and drama infused adventure follows a group of unwilling mercenaries called “The Boys”, who must take on the literal “powers that be” of a group of mostly deranged celebrity superheroes (referred to as “Supes”) which takes the idea of DC Comic’s Super Friends or Marvel’s Avengers and flips it on its head.

In episode four, you start to hear a little bit about why mother's milk is part of The Boys. He starts to reveal what happened in his past that made him even consider risking everything, including his family, to do what he's doing. Jumping off that, where do you find the inspiration for Mother's Milk? Does it come from any other media or personal experience, or is it just trying to capture what is written on the page as a character?

The Boys are made up of Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara). They are led by Butcher (Karl Urban). Season 1 of the show was heavily praised for its outlandishness and special effects as much as for its grounded emotional moments and human drama. Season 2 is arriving on Amazon Prime Video this Friday, September 4. Recently I had the opportunity to chat with Cuban-American actor Laz Alonso who appears in the show as the conscious of The Boys, Mother’s Milk. We got to go over what it’s like working on a superhero show of this type, what his character’s motivations are this season and how his character dealt with social justice situations that mirror the real world unrest that has been accelerated in these past months. To start off, I was wondering if you could set up the dynamic between the characters at the beginning of this season of “The Boys”, since season one ended in a dramatic and wild fashion. So basically, in the beginning of season two, you know, we're kind of we're not happy about how Butcher (the leader of The Boys) left us high and dry. You know, we all came together because he put us together. And there's a certain level of trust that we all have for each other. You know, we are a family. And I think thematically, that's one of the main things that you learn about season two is, is how important the issue of family is to The Boys and to our mission being successful. There's a trust there that you rely on when really, nothing else is a constant on the show. There's so much crazy stuff that happens from episode to episode, the only thing that stays constant is how we look out for each other. And [Butcher] broke that. So, in episode one, season two, you pick up on Butcher coming back to The Boys and having to regain that trust that he lost. Also, we're kind of discombobulated. We're no longer on the trail after the suits, we're kind of hiding out and trying to figure out what we're going to do next. How do you feel about the fact that Butcher is gone, and you guys have that animosity towards him, but now you're kind of having a similar type of relationship with Huey and there's this push and pull there? Huey now, he's all in. Huey has accepted that he's one of The Boys, whereas before it used to freak him out. Now he's actually enjoying being a freedom fighter, so to speak. In season one of the first things that Mother's Milk did was to warn Huey about how this job can really get the most of you. You have to be careful because, you know, when you're fighting against these super human beings, there's

Laz Alonso plays anti-hero Mother's Milk in Amazon's "The Boys". Photo Credit: Amazon Studios

a certain high that you get from it that can end up turning you just as evil as them. Another thing that Mother’s Milk has his hands full with is that while Butcher basically brought Mother's Milk on to the team to be his conscience to keep him from going over the edge, Mother's Milk also has to control Huey and make sure that he doesn't turn into another Butcher because now he'd have to be the conscience of both guys. If you think about it, they have a lot in common.

I mean, both these guys have lost their significant other in one way or another to one of the suits. The love of their life has been stripped from them. And so, they're both on the revenge finding mission. And what Mother’s Milk is trying to do is not let Huey end up going down the same dark path that Butcher did. At the same time, you are worried about your character's own family? Oh, yeah, absolutely. Because, you know, it's interesting, you know, Mother's Milk really didn't

You know, I do a little bit of both. There were parts of mother's milk this season that were very reflective of what's going on in our country right now. And so in those moments, you know, he spoke from the heart, you know, from what a lot of the stuff that you're seeing happen with the protests and everything, you'll see that he spoke from a very human experience as a black character on that show. But it's very much in line with the character still because some of the stuff that you're going to see happen in season two are eerily similar to some of the stuff that's happening in real life. So, mother's milk would naturally respond that way, being as though he's a black man in a world where there are beings that can kill humans and do things without being punished. And if you were a superhero where no one can tell you what you can or cannot do, how would you behave? You know what I'm saying? This show definitely has got the superhero part to it, but it is a drama in itself as well, so I was wondering what do you like best about working on this show, what is the appealing part to you as an actor and as a fan? You know, what I like most about working on the show is that on one hand we get to play, make-believe and be kids all over again. I mean, working on a superhero show at the end of the day is still a treat. I mean, you're still being a child and using your imagination to imagine what's happening, people and things flying, because ultimately, we don't see what you see when we shoot it. We only see what we imagine that it looks like. We have an amazing special effects team that tells us, "okay, this is what happened. This is what that looks like and this is what it's going to look like when this happens." And then we try our best to match their description to what we imagine it'll look like when it turns out. And luckily, we try not to overact just in case it ends up not being as big as what we thought it was going to look like. Thanks Laz! Now my last question was, why would you recommend folks check out season 2 of "The Boys" and if they haven't seen it yet, start catching up for this new season? Well, I recommend it because this show is bloody. It's action-packed. It tells a really cool story. You got great characters that are really screwed up in the head. And it's funny, you know, I mean, you get a little bit of everything. You laugh, you get mad, you see some cool stuff. And it's just all wrapped up in one. You get a little bit of everything in our show.

PARASOMNIAS: QUÉ LAS PROVOCA Y CÓMO TRATARLAS

L

Your written response must be in proper legal form if you want the court to hear your case. There may be a court form that you can use for your response. You can find these court forms and more information at the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo. ca.gov/selfhelp), your county law library, or the courthouse nearest you. If you cannot pay the filing fee, ask the court clerk for a fee waiver form. If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case by default, and your wages, money, and property may be taken without further warning from the court. There are other legal requirements. You may want to call an attorney right away. If you do not know an attorney, you may want to call an attorney referral service. If you cannot afford an attorney, you may be eligible for free legal services from a nonprofit legal services program. You can locate these nonprofit groups at the California Legal Services Web site (www. lawhelpcalifornia.org), the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo.ca.gov/ selfhelp), or by contacting your local court or county bar association. NOTE: The court has a statutory lien for waived fees and costs on any settlement or arbitration award of $10,000 or more in a civil case. The court’s lien must be paid before the court will dismiss the case.

EDWOOD CITY, CA – Isabel Perez and her husband each lost two jobs in San Francisco restaurants due to the COVID19 pandemic. They owe three months of rent and, if the moratorium on evictions ending on Aug. 30 in San Mateo County is not extended, they will be left on the streets along with their tenyear-old son. About 6,900 people in the wealthy enclave along the San Francisco Peninsula are in danger of losing their homes at the end of this month. On Aug. 21, approximately 100 people, including tenants and activists, demonstrated in the courtyard of San Mateo Center, located in Redwood City, to ask San Mateo County supervisors for an extension to the moratorium on evictions. Nazanin Salehi, a staff attorney for the Housing Program at Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto, said people of color are disproportionately facing eviction in San Mateo County. More than 4,100 households with children are facing eviction, she said, adding that kids will also lose their schools once evicted as San Mateo County schools are primarily engaged in distance learning during the pandemic. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the county is $2,700. “People are looking at $10-$20,000 in rental debt,” she said. Salehi and local rent activists are advocating for a model in which San Mateo County pays up to 75 percent of a tenant’s debt directly to the landlord, to avoid eviction. On Aug. 4, at their last official meeting, San Mateo County supervisors denied an extension to the current moratorium on evictions that began on March 25 and ends on August 30 of this year. “Our supervisors have decided that it is more important for homeowners to continue to earn money and evict workers from their homes than for families to remain in safe homes,” said Jason Tarricone, housing program director for East Palo Alto Community Legal Services, one of the organizers of the protest. Across the state of California, approximately four million people will be in danger of losing their homes on Sept. 2, when a state moratorium, issued by the California Judicial Council April 6, is lifted. The Judicial Council stated earlier this month that it will not extend the moratorium, and expects the state Legislature to take action. But the timeline for action is short: the Legislature adjourns on Aug. 31. AB 1436, which has been winding its way through the state Assembly, would offer relief from eviction to the state’s renters. According to the provisions of the bill, landlords can use several methods to extract owed rent from their tenants, but cannot evict them. AB 1436 encourages landlords and tenants to work out a system for past-due rent, without charges for late fees. It also mandates the removal of negative consequences, such as notice of eviction appearing on a tenant’s credit report.

Photo Credit: Ethnic Media Services of AB 1436, said the bill is stuck in the Senate Rules Committee, a placeholder as tenant advocates and landlords make their case for a better version of the bill. “Landlords vehemently oppose the bill. Tenants would like to see it go further,” said Kwart, expressing optimism that a version of the bill will pass before the Legislature adjourns. It’s pretty clear that something needs to get done. We told people to stay home, and businesses to close down. Millions of people lost their jobs and cannot pay rent through no fault of their own.” “The consequence of evicting so many people will have a profound impact,” said Kwart, citing an alarming increase in the number of homeless people, the increased spread of COVID, and an overall dampening of the California economy. “This could be catastrophic to our state,” she said. “What we are experiencing is serious, very unfair and worrying,” said Adriana Guzman, a San Mateo County activist, in an interview with EMS. According to Guzman, the denial of supervisors to extend the moratorium is causing some landlords to put pressure on tenants. “Yesterday I got a call from a desperate elderly woman because her landlord is harassing her so much that he told her to pay him now or leave, but the landlord is acting inappropriately because the moratorium is still in place.” Guzmán says that while she was on the phone with the woman who had been harassed by her landlord, she felt bad because of the high level of stress she was feeling, and her husband had to take her to the doctor in an emergency. “Many people like this family are going through unnecessary stress. Those most affected by the upcoming eviction crisis are the elderly and children, as they are the most vulnerable. That’s why we’re asking supervisors to rethink how supporting families is in the best interest of the entire county.”

“We are facing a momentous societal shift. We need to put the brakes on this now,” she said.

“The Supervisors have the power to stop these evictions and save people’s homes,” said Gabriel Manrique, a member of El Comité y Luna. “They must extend the moratorium through the end of the state of the state of emergency, pass a policy to make tenants´ COVID -19 rent debt non-evictable debt, and allocate more funding to rental assistance for tenants and mortgage relief for small landlords.”
