Lo mínimo que merecen es un acto elemental de justicia y reciprocidad. espite the risk of COVID-19 infection, hundreds of thousands put on sandals, put on bathing suits, applied sunscreen and hit the beaches to celebrate Labor Day, the long holiday that marks the end of the summer. In agricultural fields, some 3 million agricultural workers spend these days very differently. In California, where temperatures have exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit in recent weeks, entire families of farm workers continue their tireless work in the blazing sun to harvest the fresh fruits and vegetables that we have on our table. Worse still, Ameri-
"Agricultural workers continue to work without having the necessary equipment to protect themselves," says Teresa Romero, the leader of the Union of Campesinos or United Farm Workers. "The masks that we have been distributing are to protect against COVID-19, but not from the poor quality that exists in the air from the fires." Although specific guidelines have been issued to protect agricultural workers, they are not being fully implemented in all agricultural fields. The peasants have a phrase that sums up their working conditions before and during the pandemic: "The laws on the books ... are not the laws in the fields." The reality is that, in the wake of the pandemic, the federal government for the first time recognizes agricultural workers as essential workers, but at the same time has excluded those who are undocumented from receiving any federal benefits. This has been the case with the financial rescue packages approved by the federal Congress. Even those workers who are citizens or legal residents, whose spouse is undocumented, or those undocumented with US children have been excluded. "It was a great injustice," says Daniel Garza, president of The Libre Initiative and a descendant of a family of agricultural workers, referring to US citizens who did not receive the federal support check simply because their partner did not have legal status in the States United.

The Federal Congress has the responsibility to redress that injustice immediately. The Senate returned to session this week after its summer recess. On the table is the version of the rescue bill which is approved in the House of Representatives and includes support for those anonymous heroes of the pandemic. a devoción a Santa Dympna cuenta con muchos siglos de existencia.

UU.

tienen. “Estamos luchando para que el departamento de desarrollo cambie sus políticas de uso de espacios públicos y el gobierno apoye a organizaciones comunitarias para que más familias puedan ser agricultoras”, anotó López. 54 millones con hambre La situación de San Antonio es el microcosmos de un panorama que es muy pálido a nivel país. Según las encuestas semanales de la Oficina del Censo (analizadas por el Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Hamilton), en las dos primeras semanas de agosto, alrededor de 14 millones de niños no estaban recibiendo los alimentos que necesitan. Esta cifra equivale a los menores que viven en una sexta parte de los hogares estadounidenses y es cinco veces más alta que antes de la pandemia. Y según el modelo económico de Feeding America, una organización sin fines de lucro que tiene una red nacional de más de 200 bancos de alimentos, 54 millones de personas, incluidos 18 millones de niños y niñas, van a experimentar inseguridad alimentaria en 2020. La cifra durante la Gran Depresión de 1929 fue de 60 millones. “Desde mediados de marzo hemos visto que sube la escasez de alimentos en todo el país”, dijo Ami L. McReynolds, directora de equidad y programas de Feeding America, organización que ya asistía a 37 millones de personas antes del COVID, en 60,000 puntos de distribución en todo Estados Unidos. “El costo de vida continúa incrementándose y la gente se queda sin alimentos porque sus ingresos cubren lo básico que es vivienda, comida y transporte. Pero los gastos alimenticios son flexibles;

HUNGER IN TIMES OF THE PANDEMIC: 14 MILLION CHILDREN IN THE US DO NOT GET TO EAT THE FOOD THEY NEED
The number is five times higher than before the coronavirus crisis. And at the recent Democratic and Republican conventions, no one spoke of the hunger that plagues 54 million people in the country, a number that is close to the levels of the Great Depression.

ties have created alliances with grassroots organizations to understand cultural preferences regarding food and reduce barriers of trust regarding access.
W
hen Jovanna López realized that the food received by immigrants, blacks, and indigenous people who stood in long queues at food banks in San Antonio, Texas, was out of date or rotten, she set out to work so that these communities could access fresh fruits and vegetables. Even more so when organic markets were dominated by producers who only targeted a bourgeois public with astronomical prices’ and who also rejected food stamps as payment. So, in 2015, this food promoter co-founded People 's Nite Market, a night market where access to nutritious food replaced spoiled avocados and salads that were handed out in food donations. "The situation before COVID-19 was already difficult," Lopez said during a press conference organized by Ethnic Media Services. "But when the pandemic started, all this poverty and hunger rose and people with disabilities, or without access to transportation to go anywhere, or even with immunological problems, had to stop eating." An 85-year-old neighbor was feeding herself with bread for weeks because no one could visit her due to social distancing, until López's organization brought her a box of rice and beans. Since the beginning of June thanks to a $600,000 grant from the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), People's Nite Market has been able to feed 150,000 families in the area, including the undocumented, with the weekly distribution of 5,000 boxes of products such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, and rice. According to López, the San Antonio housing authority decided to cancel the shipment of food as soon as COVID started and people were trying to help each other, especially those who had immunological problems or were under 60, since the aid for young populations are scarce. "I spoke to many activists and we had residents start their own community web to access whatever resources they might need." As an urban farmer, López works with García Street Urban Farm, a four-hectare farm in western San Antonio that allows people to grow their own food. But this model, although successful, requires an initial investment of $20,000 that many do not have. "We are fighting for the development department to change its policies for the use of public spaces and the government to
“We know that fear prevents access to food, it is a concern. We want the communities to feel comfortable and safe coming to these centers.” McReynolds says that while they are supported by a network of nearly two million volunteers and even the National Guard that helps maintain health protocols dictated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they continue looking for allies. Federal aid Feeding America, for example, provides only one-ninth of what federal programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as Food Stamps) and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) do. But in new relief packages to address the coronavirus pandemic, resources for these programs run the risk of being cut or underfunded.

support community organizations so that more families can be farmers," said López. 54 million hungry The situation in San Antonio is the microcosm of a panorama that is very dire at the country level. According to weekly Census Bureau surveys (analyzed by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Hamilton), in the first two weeks of August about 14 million children were not getting the food they need. This number is equivalent to minors living in one sixth of American households and is five times higher than before the pandemic. And according to the economic model of Feeding America, a nonprofit organization that has a national network of more than 200 food banks, 54 million people, including 18 million children, will experience food insecurity in 2020. The figure during the Great Depression of 1929 was 60 million. “Since mid-March, we've seen food shortages rise across the country,” said Ami L. McReynolds, director of equity and programs for Feeding America, an organization that already served 37 million people before COVID, by 60,000 points. distribution throughout the United States. “The cost of living continues to rise and people are left without food because their income covers the basics of housing, food
and transportation. But food expenses are flexible; it's the first thing they cut when there are problems with resources at home,” added McReynolds. Indigenous, black and immigrant communities suffer 2.5 times more hunger than white people, and are more affected by unemployment, which is already close to 11%. These households can cover a maximum of US $ 400 in emergencies, they have less access to transportation to get to food distribution points, and due to discriminatory practices they are not owners so they live in neighborhoods with less infrastructure and access. Not to mention that they have been the hardest hit by COVID-19. “There is a 60% increase in our services during the pandemic. Many individuals that come today to our food centers have themselves been former volunteers or donors to the banks. They are some of our most recent clients,” McReynolds said. His organization has mutated to new distribution models such as grocery deliveries and home canning, to reduce contact with people, especially older adults of whom an estimated 5.5 million are starving. There are also technological applications through which people can order food online at nearby supermarkets, to reduce queues at satellite distribution sites. And many banks that work specifically with Latino communi-
"Both Republicans and Democrats want to pass some assistance, but the problem is that they want it to be a third of what was approved in the House of Representatives," said the Reverend David Beckmann, president of the Bread for the World Institute. "Making cuts to programs like SNAP in schools, even while they are closed, is going to be devastating for a lot of people." Beckmann also recalled that this federal assistance is not available to undocumented people. Even for resident immigrants, the current administration's change to public charge law makes them reluctant to ask for help for fear of affecting their future immigration regularization process. That is why other measures such as immigration and labor reform are urgently needed because to end hunger, "it is not enough just to give people food, but to make people able to earn that food." The expert said however that the absence of the issue in the Democratic and Republican conventions reflects the impact of the consultants who have asked politicians not to use the word poverty in the richest country in the world. "The (Joe) Biden program would give us a better option to create a healthier economy and reduce poverty," Beckmann said of the Democratic candidate's platform. "We can end hunger in eight years if we want to," he concluded.

ull-time, hybrid and supplemental distance learning have become a fundamental part of education. This isn't just a big adjustment for students; parents and teachers face new challenges as well. Whether you are trying to meaningfully connect with students over Zoom, or stay engaged at home, navigating the difficulties of distance learning causes stress levels to increase for everyone. To keep kids focused on their studies, weary educators and parents are turning to a surprising practice: Kundalini Yoga. Kundalini Yoga postures and breathing practices combined with meditation and mindfulness exercises are helping students handle the challenge of remote learning, easing the pressure put on teachers and parents. How yoga helps students Recent research underscores yoga's benefits for young learners, demonstrating that the practice of yoga is an effective form of social and emotional learning. In one study, a team of researchers including Dr. Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, a Harvard Medical School researcher and director of research for the Kundalini Research Institute, evaluated students who participated in the Kundalini Yoga-based Y.O.G.A. for Youth program. The results confirmed that students who practiced yoga reported feeling less stressed, more resilient and experienced more positive emotions. "With yoga practice, students start developing the ability to regulate their stress and emotions and develop increased awareness of their mind and body," says Khalsa. "This leads to improved functioning and coping overall, thereby preventing the risk factors for impaired mood, behavior and health." These skills are always important but are particularly critical for students dealing with dramatic changes to their learning structure.
Consejo 2: sé alegre y diviértete
Photo Credit: BPT poses and look forward to these yoga breaks. Tip 2: Be lighthearted and have fun Students - especially younger children - will have a more enjoyable time with their yoga practice if you keep it centered on fun. Be creative by selecting poses based on your kids' favorite animals. Tell stories as you change positions. Integrate games and fun mental visuals into your practice; pretend to take a trip around the world, under the sea or to a far-off imaginary place as you move through poses. Kids' yoga isn't just about yoga, it's about having fun and being yourself. Tip 3: Teach breathing awareness Just like adults, when children are nervous, stressed, excited or energetic, their breath quickens to a shorter, faster pace. If you help students become aware of their breath, they can better manage their emotional state. This is done by teaching effective breathing practices. Try using long, deep breaths - a relaxed, slow approach to breathing that involves more movement of the abdomen. This has a direct impact on the autonomic nervous system, which helps kids stay calm and more able to cope with stress. Tip 4: Use meditations and mantras Mantras, words or phrases that are repeated in a chanting man-
Photo Credit: BPT ner, are a wonderful way to help kids center themselves. It is soothing during transition periods in particular. Common mantras include "I am," "peace," or "calm," but any phrase or sound will work. Ideally a mantra should reflect the state that you want to be in rather than the one you are in now. Meditations are also great in addressing problems and frustrations that can impact students. For example, when a student feels nervous, they can close their eyes, place their hand on their belly and breathe slowly, feeling the stomach increase and decrease while imagining a balloon gracefully floating on the breeze. Tip 5: Bring in the pros You don't have to be a yoga expert to teach students yoga basics. However, if you feel uncomfortable or just want some guidance, there are many books and videos about instructing yoga to children. You can even play yoga videos for kids so everyone can participate together. Remember that distance learning is a challenge for parents and teachers as much as students. By following these tips and Kundalini yoga techniques yourself, you'll be better equipped to help children thrive whether they are in the classroom or studying remotely. a educación a distancia a tiempo completo, híbrida y complementaria se ha convertido en una parte fundamental de la educación.
Kundalini Yoga helps build concentration too, along with improving coordination, balance, strength and flexibility. Every student can benefit from incorporating yoga into their school day. To support parents and teachers, here are some tips to get students started.
Tip 1: Start small and make it routine While a 60-minute yoga class is standard for adults, children don't have the focus or stamina to practice for that long. Try starting with 5- to 10-minute sessions. Set times to do this during the school day, for example, once mid-morning and right after lunch to refocus. Start with gentle breathing and then move through a few easy poses. Forget perfection and encourage kids to try. Soon they'll learn their favorite
ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- September is National Preparedness Month, so this week LGBTQ+ groups released an open letter and launching a big social media campaign to get the community to plan ahead in case of wildfire, earthquake, floods or other emergencies. Beatriz Valenzuela, communications manager for Equality California, said everyone needs to have a plan should they lose cell service or power during an emergency. "We will agree to meet at this certain place," Valenzuela said. "If you have children in school, who will be picking up the kids? It's all these things that will be so important when it comes to being prepared for a disaster." Everyone is encouraged to sign up for real-time alerts from your county emergency management agency or fire department. You should also prepare a "go bag" with paper copies of your ID and health-insurance card, a cell phone charger and extra batteries, printed photos of family members and pets in case someone goes missing, cash in small bills, a paper map, extra medications, a flashlight and a portable radio. Aisha Charves, is program coordinator for the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County, which is part of LISTOS California, which means "ready" in Spanish, an initiative of the governor's office and the Legislature. "It's important to reach out to the LGBTQ+
community because this is the community that is often marginalized, or forgotten about," Charves said. "Some of our members are seniors who might not be connected to their family. There's a lot of youth who are unhoused and in the foster-care system." Valenzuela said people also should prepare to shelter in place, with a stay box that has nonperishable food, flashlights, trash bags with zip ties and three gallons of water per person. "This is important because you will be drinking this water, you may have to wash with this water and you may have to cook with this water," Valenzuela said.

It's also a good idea to print out a list of your friends and relatives' names, numbers and addresses, so you can help them out in a pinch.

Visita My2020Census.gov o llame 844-468-2020
