HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IS HERE by preventing British troops and military supplies from being placed along the Atlantic seaboard, especially in Florida.

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

T

he idea for National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, was proposed as a way to promote, recognize and place in context the rich history, vibrant diverse inclusive culture and many contributions of Hispanic-Latino Americans. These people, their Spanish language plus indigenous languages (Aztec, Mixtec, Toltec, Mayan, etc., and their cultural values and related ancestral practices happened in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. (Source: Wikipedia). During this period from September 15 to October 15th each year since 1968, the many contributions of HispanicLatinos(as) were highlighted to give credit to those from whom efforts and insights originated. Many do not realize that Mexico was sympathetic and supportive of the American Revolution which resulted in its independence as a new nation. In fact, General George Washington's troops received their pay because Mexican gold arrived in time to pay the troops just before the battle which defeated the British army. In addition, during the Civil War (1862-64), Mexico's Navy blockaded British ships there-

Hispanic Heritage Month begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12. Hispanic Heritage Months Activities include parties, dances, and speeches. At schools, Hispanic-Latino students may be asked to tell their classmates about their family's history and recent experiences. This is the perfect chance to celebrate the contributions of Hispanic-Latino Americans. We all need to learn about Hispanic history and culture in general because the entire South-Western region of America (some 500,000 square miles) were formerly part of the Mexican nation. There are a lot of materials out there we never get to know when only WASP teachers plan the historical curriculum of our schools! IT IS TIME WE, THE LATINO PEOPLE SPEAK UP! It is up to each Latino to learn about their family's journey from Spain, Mexico, or any other Latino nation. That journey currently ends here in this community. As a youth I constantly heard during recesses or lunch periods about the

family journey from Europe or elsewhere. It is time each of us makes the effort to talk to our own parents, just ask them to tell you ‘How did our family end up here?' In the case of my Morales family, my father, Toribio Morales, of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico was involved in the 1910 Civil Revolution and was advised to leave that community before he was killed by opponents. So, he migrated north and ended up in Gary, Indiana where I was born and raised. My brother Frank still has my Dad's pistol (a sixgun with a six-inch barrel). These family history anecdotes are valuable because they illustrate that we Latino folks have been actively involved in the struggle to achieve democratic governance and the personal freedoms we all take for granted. It is this history which our current president, Mr. Donald J. Trump, simply is totally ignorant and uninformed about. So, as the current U.S. President, he is moving funds from 127 programs to enable him to build a wall which restricts our access to this nation. As a WASPish supremacist whose superiority complex warps his ability to see Latinos and their historical and cultural significance in the formation of America's former Wild West. Trump is unable to see and take note of Latinos as an important segment of the American citizenry. It is up to us to stand up and insist on having our Federal Government continue to deliver those services our taxes underwrite: School

lunches; health care; social services; a fair and equitable justice system; and access to education and employment which pays a living wage. All these programs did not exist some 100 years ago, they were defined, developed, and sustained by We, The People!

This is the same struggle (la lucha) which we Latinos have fought for. It is our community which had 60 Congressional Medal of Honor awardees for actions and bravery above and beyond expectations. And we must understand that in the American Democracy, continuing vigilance and monitoring is required because a few new immigrants, usually from Northern Europe, try to find ways to limit our access to vote; to opportunity, and to education. We must constantly push back because We Belong Here! That is the main message of Hispanic Heritage Month. We must remind those who want to limit our access and opportunity, that WE BELONG HERE! WE HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AND FOLLOW THE SAME LAWS AND IDEALS WHICH BEGIN WITH THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. In America, we residents must be committed to sustaining and maintaining the ideals of equal treatment under the laws

By speaking up, voting, and being dignified, respectful residents and citizens, we can demonstrate what democracy is all about. The current Trump Administration certainly is not doing that, and in fact its efforts to build that wall will create a monument to their arrogant stupidity and non-inclusion of our people, their language, and their culture. BE PROUD, BE FAIR, TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM TREAT YOU. Dignity and respect are earned at home with practice and humility. Enjoy this year's annual Hispanic Heritage Month, and understand that our Latinos earned it, merit it, and deserve that much if not more. Despite changing climates which are denied by Trump Administration, we are patriots who continue to serve, support and sustain this American Democracy. WE BELONG HERE! THIS IS OUR HOME!

Our people have paid the price with sweat, blood and tears. That is something which Mr. Trump cannot claim for his lawyers engineered five draft deferments; he has never served in any public office nor in the military service of this land. So, We, The Latinos must have the resolve to limit him to just one term by voting our minds this coming March 2020 election.

ith each school year, parents dust off the annual checklists that help them organize their needs as their children return to the classroom. This school season, make sure that one of the most important priorities on your to-do list is to make sure your children have health insurance. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, studies have shown that children who have medical coverage miss fewer classes and perform better in school than those without insurance. With adequate medical coverage, children can receive vaccinations, medical and eye exams, dental consultations and preventive care they may need to participate fully in school and continue to participate in both the classroom and during activities extracurricular Health coverage can also be beneficial when a child is sick or injured. In fact, millions of children and adolescents already qualify for free or low-cost medical coverage, including dental coverage, through Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). These programs can help those who qualify to get the benefits they need to excel in the classroom. To help ensure that their children pass grade, parents must first do their homework in terms of health coverage. To make sure you have evaluated your coverage options, consider these questions and answers about health care coverage: What do Medicaid and CHIP cover? Medicaid and CHIP offer comprehensive coverage throughout the country for children and adolescents who qualify. This includes routine checkups, doctor visits, prescriptions and immunizations, dental and vision care, and emergency services, all at low cost or no cost to you or your family. How can I find out if my child is eligible? In most states, children and adolescents up to 19 years of age are eligible to enroll. Depending on their income, many families qualify for free or low-cost medical coverage. Once enrolled, how long is my child eligible to receive coverage? Children and teens can stay covered for as long as they qualify. You will have to renew your coverage once a year. How can I sign up?

For more information, call 1-877-KIDS-NOW (1-877-543-7669). When can I request registration? Since there is no special open enrollment period for Medicaid or CHIP, you can enroll at any time. on cada año escolar, los padres desempolvan las listas de verificación anuales que les ayudan a organizar sus necesidades a medida que sus hijos vuelven a las salas de clases.

ack-to-school season can be cluttered between afterschool activities, weekend sports and evening homework – as well as making dinner each night. Creating a master meal plan with quick, simple and nutritious meals is an easy way to take control of your family’s hectic schedule. Start by stocking the pantry with staple ingredients that amp up the nutrition and flavor of your family favorites.

Cover pork chops in egg mixture then transfer to bowl with pecan mixture to coat all sides. Repeat with remaining pork chops. Place three pork chops in air fryer basket. Cook pork chops 6 minutes, flip, then cook additional 6 minutes. Set aside on plate.

Pizza with Pecan-Herb Topping: Repeat with remaining chicken. Place chicken on center rack and bake 20 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. To make Buttermilk Ranch Dip: In small bowl, whisk buttermilk, mayonnaise, sour cream, parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, dried dill and salt until smooth. Serve pecan-crusted chicken tenders warm paired with Buttermilk Ranch Dip.

For example, American Pecans are a nutritious ingredient to have on-hand – among the highest in “good” monounsaturated fats and packed with plant protein, fiber and essential minerals – and “The Original Supernut” is versatile enough for breakfast, lunchboxes, dinners and on-the-go snacking. Adding one bag to your weekly grocery list provides a canvas for exploring new dishes that are both nutritious and delicious.

Repeat with remaining pork chops.

In fact, according to the Food and Drug Administration, scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1 1/2 ounces per day of most nuts, such as pecans, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. One serving (28 grams) of pecans contains 18 grams of unsaturated fat and only 2 grams of saturated fat.

medium boneless pork chops, trimmed of fat

Heat air fryer to 400 F. In medium bowl, mix pecans, arrowroot starch, Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon sea salt.

Cook time: 40 minutes

Heat oven to 425 F. In food processor, pulse pecans until fine as breadcrumbs. In shallow bowl, mix pecans with panko, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and 1 teaspoon salt. In separate shallow bowl, whisk eggs until smooth. In third shallow bowl, add flour. Lightly season chicken tenders with salt and pepper, to taste. Working with one chicken tender at a time, dip in eggs, flour then pecan mixture. Be sure to press pecan mixture into chicken to be sure it is completely coated. Set chicken on baking sheet lined with cooling rack or parchment paper.

Heat oven to 400 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly flour clean surface. Using rolling pin, roll out pizza dough to 1/8-inch thick and transfer to prepared baking sheet. Gently pierce dough with fork to prevent air pockets. Bake crust 10-15 minutes, or until lightly golden in color. In food processor, pulse pecans, parsley and garlic powder until mixture becomes coarse crumbs. Transfer to bowl and stir in Parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes (if desired), salt and pepper. Set aside. Using spoon, evenly spread pizza sauce over crust. Top with mozzarella cheese, red pepper slices and onion slices. Sprinkle 1/3 cup pecan mixture evenly over pizza. Transfer pizza to oven and bake 10-15 minutes, or until crust is crispy and cheese is melted. Serve with remaining pecan-herb mixture. Notes: If dough instructions differ from recipe, use package instructions. Additional topping options include: pepperoni, olives, ham, bacon and roasted veggies. Leftover pecan-herb topping can be used for pasta and salads.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. - Groups that advocate for seniors are urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign a bill that is designed to lower the cost of prescription drugs. Assembly Bill 824 would deter drug companies from making so-called pay for delay deals in which generic companies agree to keep their product off the market. Blanca Castro, advocacy director with AARP California, said these arrangements result in higher drug prices that can push low-income seniors to take desperate measures. "They either don't take the drugs the way they're prescribed, because they want them to last; or they have to choose between buying food or buying prescription drugs," Castro said. The pharmaceutical companies claim these agreements actually expedite entry of generics onto the market. But Castro says that argument is unproven. The first-in-the-nation bill would give the state Attorney General more resources to pursue this type of case. Castro said it makes them easier to prosecute by putting the onus on the drug companies to prove the deals aren't unfair to the consumer. "It shifts the burden of proof on the pharmaceutical company," she said.

"Right now the attorney general must prove that the settlements are anticompetitive." Consumer groups are working with supporters in Congress to try to ban the practice of pay-for-delay deals entirely.

ENVER – The corn is high and the collards full and dark green at Sun Valley Grow Farm, but the star attraction at Friday's food stand are hot peppers needed for many African and Asian recipes.

Sun Valley, just southwest of Denver's business district, is the poorest census tract in Colorado. It's also one of the most diverse, a place many immigrant and refugee families call home. The urban farm is part of a larger redevelopment effort by the Denver Housing Authority, which will create additional mixedincome housing units, a much-needed upgrade from the 60-year-old public housing complex, and retail space.

Brien Darby, urban food programs manager at the Denver Botanic Gardens, says the oneacre farm isn't just providing access to healthy produce with a much higher nutrient density than food shipped cross country. "It's really more about empowerment, and allowing for food to be grown in a community where maybe in the past that was prohibited,” she states. “And we want to make sure that people know that this is a space where you can grow food that is ethnically important to you."

This is the first year Sun Valley neighbors in Denver have been able to share in the harvest of kale, beans, carrots, cucumbers and more.

Darby says the farm itself is open to all residents, and many have gotten their hands dirty planting through to harvest. The redevelopment plans also include making healthy foods accessible year-round by establishing a neighborhood-operated grocery store.

"But they're also doing as much job creation and job training as possible,” she points out. “So one of the long-term goals of the Sun Valley Grow Farm is that we will be able to turn over the management of it to somebody in the neighborhood." Community members can enroll in beginner farmer classes at the Denver Botanic Gardens' Colorado State University Extension. Darby says the farm will be the classroom, where residents can grow foods not always offered on supermarket shelves as they hone their skills.

Q&A: YVETTE MONREAL AND THE CURIOUS CASE OF A CARING RAMBO Actress Yvette Monreal gives us insight into working on “Rambo: Last Blood”, and how it reveals the most human version of action warrior John Rambo ever seen

A

Arturo Hilario El Observador

told that he's just not a good guy, but I refuse to believe that because - I thought I had good memories of him, and Rambo is there to remind me that he's just not a good guy. “You shouldn't go, you should wait until you're older and can actually process the answers that he might give then.”

thriving action franchise was started with “First Blood” in 1982, and since then Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo character has traveled the world dispensing justice and revenge. Now, 2019 brings “Rambo: Last Blood”, following the PTSD stricken Vietnam veteran as he must once again take up arms in his final mission, even after creating a home and allowing himself to be part of a family.

This is the one thing that is kind of like pulling at me, so I decide to go. Thank you, Yvette. So, since this is an action movie, it's Rambo after all, I was wondering what it was like working on set like this? How was it like with the stunt work. Did you have to do any of that?

Yvette Monreal is a rising face in Hollywood, with credits beginning in 2013 in TV shows like “The Fosters”, to recently being cast as superheroine Stargirl, in D.C. comics new show of the same name. Her role of Gabriela in “Rambo: Last Blood” is her most high profile to date.

Yeah. So, I mean I did actually perform one stunt on the movie, but I don't think it made it in the movie. But yeah there's a stunt team on there and they taught us the stunts right before we did it and it was it was fun. I usually like to do my own stunts.

Recently Monreal had some time to talk about her experience working on a tried and true action film that also has, as she puts it, “a lot of heart”.

I also wanted to know what it was like working with Adriana Barraza and Sylvester Stallone?

In the following interview, Monreal explains her journey playing Rambo’s niece, her stunt work, binging Stallone movies and his memorable advice to her on set. Hi Yvette, thanks for the time. First off, I was wondering what your background with the Rambo movie franchise was. When did you first hear about it, and had you seen the movies prior to working on this film? Well I first heard about it when I got the audition. I actually didn't know that the Rambo franchise existed to be honest. And I felt really dumb about it because my parents, my family, my friends, they were like, "It's Rambo! Like how could you not know that." And I felt really dumb, but I think it was just because I was more into watching Nickelodeon and just you know, little girls' show. But yeah when I auditioned for it, I realized that it was a big deal. And when I finally got it, it was like a dream come true because it changed my life basically. And since then have you gone back and checked those movies out? Yeah for sure. I watched all the Rambo movies, I watched the Rocky movies - I had heard of Rocky but I never watched the movies, and so I just went on a Sylvester Stallone binge. Yeah, and that guy in those movies was your coworker. Yes, he's my co-worker! Sylvester Stallone. Oh, that guy? Yeah! That’s so great. Now what the story is in “Rambo: Last Blood” from your perspective? Of course, this movie this is the first time people got to see Rambo with a family and with my character Gabriela. She's 17 and her mom dies at seven years old and my dad leaves Mexico for reasons I know nothing of. And so when I'm 17 I want to venture off into college but before doing so, I have this conversation with my Uncle John and I tell him that I found my father, and that I want to see him and I want to get answers face to face. [Uncle John] says no, "You know you should wait until you're a little older and you can understand better." He tells me how he's just not a good guy and I just refuse to believe it. So that's when I go to Mexico and that's where I get everyone in trouble. I get kidnapped and that leads Rambo having to save me and I ruin a lot of things. You know this is the first time he found peace. Then with my curiosity it kind of shifted things immensely. Looking at your character of Gabriela, how do you think that character, and how did you help bring that humanity, family, and that peaceful side out of John Rambo? Well my character she has a good head on her shoulders. She's very well-mannered. She's never gone out of her way to make life hard for Rambo or her grandmother. I'm a good kid but the only thing that I need to continue on and to just live my life without looking back is those answers and the truth from my father and why he left. And so that's the only thing that is kind of basically holding me back and feeling fulfilled, I guess. So, Rambo comes to me when I'm when I'm 10 years

Yvette Monreal plays the niece of John Rambo, who is kidnapped, prompting Rambo to step back into his old ways in “Rambo: Last Blood”. Photo Credit: Lionsgate old and he becomes my stepfather figure. You know he could be he becomes that father figure for me so I'm the first family that Rambo has. You know that [in] the previous Rambo movies you see him in war and fighting it, but you'd never see him get close to a family the way he does in this movie. I think that's what's so identifiable with the Rambo character and what everyone else can identify with because you want to protect your own, you want to make sure your family's safe. You want to make sure

that what you've created is in a good place and that's where I go against what he's basically said to me all my life and I go to Mexico and I kind of shift things around. Yet also on Gabriela's end it's a pursuit of family that even pushes her to go into the danger that lies in finding her father, right? Yeah for sure I'm going to my biological father and I want to know these questions - I want to know why he left and why he never came back. And I'm being

It was it was really great working with the both of them. They really made me feel secure in my choices and working on set with them. I mean naturally I got a little nervous because they'd been in this game for so long. They've been you know they have so many titles under their belt and I thought about that but once they got on set and it was go time they made me feel very comfortable. You know we have the family dynamic that is very natural. Adriana Barraza is she so sweet and so loving and she is naturally nurturing. So, she made me feel so comfortable and [with] Sylvester Stallone you know like there's a good balance. He means business he knows what he wants from the scenes and what he wants from you as an acting partner, so you know there's a good balance there and it couldn't have worked out better. I think you know sometimes people get casted and it doesn't work out. But here the dynamic was just great. And we all got along we worked together, and it was beautiful. With this more family-centered approach in “Rambo: Last Blood”, do you think that audiences could also spread to include viewers that don't normally watch action films? Oh definitely. I think so because it's not only an action movie it has a lot of heart in it and I feel like people can identify with Rambo in this movie because it's something that you know, if you had a family if you had anyone knew was going to go after the thing that you loved the most, the thing that you've come home to and like created that relationship with, I feel like naturally your instinct is to go berserk and just try to find whoever hurt the people that you love. So yeah, I think that's very identifiable with the audience. I think in one way or the other like people can relate to this because naturally I think as humans we just want to protect the people that we love the most and have a lot of that and it does have a lot of action and fights and everything. So, just be ready for that. Very entertaining. Thanks again Yvette, for your time. For my last question, is there anything you would like to share with us in terms of any surprising things you took away from working on the movie, a story or memory? Sure. A cool memory was when I was on the horses with Sylvester Stallone, my horse was scared of his horse. I think his horse was a stallion, so it just ran off and I started going full speed and I was scared because there's a bunch of holes in the field. I felt like maybe I would fall but then I ended up just embracing the moment and I was just like, "This is never going to happen again, so I'm just going to enjoy it." Yeah so, we had to do the scenes [afterwards] with people actually holding our horses because mine was so intimidated by his. Also, another thing that Sylvester Stallone told me, an advice that he gave me, was that if you're working 14- or 16-hour days, to always give it your best. Give it your all. The movies are always going to be there, and you can't go back and redo it once it's out. Even if you're tired you just give it 100 percent because it will always be there, you can't redo a performance. You can see Yvette Monreal in “Rambo: Last Blood” in theaters now.

"Studies have shown that folks that do use e-cigarettes have been known to use traditional tobacco products as well, and it can turn into a lifelong addiction," he points out. Whitmer said candy or fruit flavored vape liquid is marketed specifically to children, so the state will forbid the use of terms such as "clean," "safe" or "healthy" in vape ads, and step up enforcement of existing rules against vape ads on billboards. The Vapor Technology Association opposes the move, saying it will spur a black market and hurt small businesses. Recently, there have been a spate of news reports of teens with severe lung damage linked to vaping. The Michigan Legislature passed bills in June to make it illegal to sell vaping products to minors. But Schepers faults lawmakers for not going further.

"They had the opportunity to define these as tobacco, which would provide comprehensive protections for everyone,” he points out. “They failed to do that." The ban took effect Wednesday September 18, and lasts for six months, at which point it can be renewed. EARTHTALK Q&A: FIRES ON THE AMAZON

Dear EarthTalk: What are the ramifications of these horrendous fires taking place now in the Amazon Rainforest? What can be done to stop the madness? -- Jane W., Waterbury, CT

Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss Earth Talk

the Nature Conservancy, another leading nonprofit working on the ground in the Amazon and elsewhere to protect tropical rainforests. “There is already a considerable amount of land in the Amazon to increase production of food without deforestation.” The Nature Conservancy sees smarter use of land across the Amazon that’s already been converted to agriculture as one key way to stem the tide of rainforest loss and ultimately global warming.

F

ire isn’t new to the Amazon rainforest of South America, but it has certainly reached epic proportions this year. Some 26,000 different fires are now burning continuously throughout the region. Many of these blazes have been set intentionally by ranchers and farmers trying to (illegally) clear and use more and more land for raising cattle and crops. These so-called “slash-and-burn” tactics reduce wildlife habitat and biodiversity accordingly while releasing massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, only adding to our climate woes. Meanwhile, indigenous groups who depend on the rainforest for subsistence teeter on the brink of survival in the face of shrinking habitat. Unfortunately, putting out most of these existing fires isn’t feasible; they’ll have to run their course. Environmentalists agree what we can do is prevent more land from burning in the future as one way of protecting the intact tropical rainforest that remains throughout the Amazon. But how? For starters, by working on the ground in partnership with local indigenous communities on making their forests sustainable through tourism and responsible use without resorting to clearing/burning the land. One of the leaders in this new breed of rainforest activism is Niyanta Spelman and her group

Research shows that replacing or retrofitting dirty old diesel school buses can reduce the pollution inhaled by students significantly and can even lead to better health and higher standardized test scores. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Rainforest Partnership, which currently has four different projects underway with the Achuar, Chipaota and Colibri indigenous communities of Peru and the Sani Isla community of Ecuador. “When managed sustainably, ecotourism in the rainforest can help protect biodiverse ecosystems, provide reliable income to forest communities, and educate travelers about the importance of conservation,” says Spelman, who

launched Rainforest Partnership in 2007 and has built it into one of the most impactful groups working in the region. Meanwhile, other groups are focusing on converting farmers and ranchers over to more sustainable crops and practices. “Although the fires were set to clear space to occupy the land, a lot Classified of the area is not used productively Job Fair El Obs - PRINT.pdf or is used mainly for land speculation,” reports

As for what people can do, being more thoughtful about the foods we eat is a big step in the right direction. That hamburger meat you are eating might well come from cattle on a burned-over pasture in a former slice of the Amazon rainforest. That’ll give you pause when you are thinking about what to put in the shopping cart at the grocery store and what to order off of a restaurant menu. The shocking truth is that 80 percent of tropical rainforest destruction across the Amazon is fueled by beef production. So eating a more plant-based diet is a great way to help protect what’s left of the world’s tropical rainforests. NBA super-star LeBron James did not hide his stance on the bill as he tweeted, "College athletes can responsibly get paid for what they do and the billions they create."

alifornia Senate passed Senate Bill 206 on September 11th which will allow students to make money based on their name and likeness.

James did not attend a college university as he was drafted into the NBA after graduating from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

“I see it as a step in the right direction,” said senior San Jose State University women's soccer defender, Kristen Amarikwa.“One of the frustrating things I noticed while being here is not being able to advertise yourself or use your skills and what you achieved to put your name out there without violating some NCAA rules.”

Assistant Coach at SJSU women’s soccer, Tina Estrada, believes that the incentive could be a distraction but also believes that athletes should be able to perform regardless of distractions. “I think there is always distractions for players, this would be another added distraction. At the end of the day, what every coach hopes for is whatever distractions every athlete has outside of soccer, they just manage it in the proper way.”

California Assembly unanimously, 72-0, voted to pass SB 206 that allowed California Senate to vote in favor of SB 206, 31-4 according to the LA Times. Governor Gavin Newsom has 30 days from September 11th to sign or veto the bill. If a decision has not been made after 30 days, the bill will become a part of the law. If SB 206 is approved, the law will come into effect January 1st, 2023. Yet opponents, like the National Collegiate Athletic Association, sent a warning letter to Gov. Newsom two days after the bill was passed through Senate. “SB 206 doesn't force colleges to pay; it simply opens the door for athletes to earn money just like any other student, whether it's monetizing YouTube videos, teaching swim lessons or accepting sponsorship,” said State Senator, Nancy Skinner in a statement the same day. The NCAA's board of governors sent the warning in a letter (posted on their own website) the following Wednesday, urging the state to reconsider, "this

harmful and, we believe, unconstitutional bill.” On the other hand, sophomore Football Defensive End Cade Hall says, “I do not agree that it is unconstitutional. I think that amateur athletes do have the right to make money off their own name through outside avenues; if other people take an interest in that athlete, then I think they should be able to take advantage.” SB 206 was introduced by state Sens. Nancy Skinner and Steven Bradford. The NCAA said it opposes the bill as it would create an imbalance within the sport. to compete in NCAA competitions, the governors said. NCAA President Mark Emmert and 21 other members of the organization’s board of governors signed the letter. “I do not feel like it is an unfair advantage. I think that schools are going to recruit how they are going to recruit and [athletes] are going to make their decisions regardless if there is a law in place saying they are going to make money,” said Sophomore Football Defensive End, Cade Hall.

San Jose State University gave female athletes $10,171 in sports related student aid according to collegefactual.com. “This sport, especially in women’s sports, this would help us get more recognition,” said Amarikwa. “I think the [recognition] has improved but there is always room for improvement.” NCAA also included in their letter to Newsom; “Right now, nearly half a million student-athletes in all 50 states compete under the same rules. This bill would remove that essential element of fairness and equal treatment that forms the bedrock of college sports.”
