2

tered in her life. In 1960 she was rejected as assistant to the Supreme Court magistrate Felix Frankfurter for a simple reason: she was a woman.

José López Zamorano La Red Hispana “It's about time,” Ruth Bader Ginsburg responded when asked about the #MeToo movement during one of her lucid and generous public talks at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018. “For a long time, women were silent, thinking that they couldn't do anything about it, but now the law is on the side of women, or men, who are harassed - and that is a good thing.” While studying for her undergraduate degree at the prestigious Cornell University, where she graduated first in her class, Ruth Bader had been bullied when a professor offered her good grades in exchange for sexual favors.

How then to honor the legacy of a fighter who fought against discrimination, against adversity, against cancer, against injustice and never gave up? Already on her deathbed, she fought her last battle: One of her last wishes was not to be replaced until the arrival of a new president.

But in perspective, the ideas that Ruth Bader Ginsburg defended as the second woman to reach the Supreme Court seem to be more in tune with the sentiment of the American public than those of her conservative colleagues. She was a champion for the rights of women, migrants, the LGBT community and the mentally ill.

In 2016, she participated in the majority opinion of the court in a case that helped dismantle a Texas law that placed restrictions on clinics that offered abortion services. Three years after the case, she told The New York Times that, "the bottom line is that the government has no right to make that decision for a woman."

The lifelong friendship between one of the sharpest liberal minds and one of the cleverest conservative minds continues to fascinate new generations. ACRAMENTO, Calif. – September 22 was National Voter Registration Day, and goodgovernment groups say it's more important than ever. Millions of citizens have not yet registered. So Jonathan Mehta Stein, executive director at California Common Cause, is working to spread the word: Every vote counts. "For a lot of low-propensity voters, limited Englishspeaking voters, young voters and first-time voters, they don't even realize that voter registration is the first step to voting," Mehta Stein said. "And so National Voter Registration Day is an opportunity to draw everyone's attention to the need to register to vote." It only takes a few minutes to register at registertovote. ca.gov, or you can register and vote on the same day at any polling place or vote center in the state. This year, California became the first state to send mail-in ballots -- and not just ballot request forms -- to every registered voter, so people can vote from home without worrying about being exposed to COVID-19. Mehta Stein said voters need to follow the direc-

tions on the ballot carefully. "Hundreds of thousands of voters have problems with their vote-by-mail ballots every single election cycle, because they've failed to sign the ballot envelope or their signature on their ballot envelope doesn't match the signature that’s on file, or they've simply turned it in too late," he said. President Donald Trump has railed against sending ballots to all registered voters, claiming it raises the risk of voter fraud. However, in the five states that do so - actual cases of fraud have been infinitesimal. All ballots are tracked with bar codes and go through extensive verification with signaturematching technology. Mehta Stein noted there has been no partisan advantage to vote-by-mail in past elections. "Study after study has shown that if you increase access to vote by mail it benefits voters by expanding access to the ballot, but it does not have a benefit for Democrats or Republicans," he said. In-person voting locations will vary by county, so it's important to check your county registrar of voters' website. Fifteen of the state's counties, including Los Angeles and Orange counties, have switched to a system of regional vote

centers that are larger and open for 4 days before the election. The other counties retain the traditional neighborhood polling places that are open on Election Day only. Support for this reporting was provided by The Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York brindó apoyo para este informe.

ONCORD, N.H.

T

he County of Santa Clara became the first in the State to designate Juneteenth a paid County holiday with a unanimous vote for Supervisor Dave Cortese’s proposal at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday September 22. Starting June 19, 2021, Juneteenth will be a paid holiday for County employees to recognize the end of slavery in the U.S., 30 months and 19 days after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. It was not until June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. “Designating Juneteenth as a holiday in Santa Clara County is especially significant in the wake of protests over systemic racism here and across the nation,” Supervisor Cortese said. “This historic vote recognizes the legacy of injustice to people of color and the work that still remains to ensure that freedom exists for all.” On August 21, the Board voted to allocate $2.3 million to be put into a reserve to fund declaring Juneteenth as a County holiday. Tuesday’s final vote makes the holiday official. The vote was preceded by speakers who supported Supervisor Cortese’s proposal. Supervisors also received many letters and voices of support from the community before the Board of Supervisors meeting.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Before the pandemic, one in five children in California lived with hunger. Now, it's one in four, so the media company Discovery, Inc. is partnering with nonprofits to feed millions of kids and make sure their basic needs are met. Alexa Verveer, executive vice president of public policy, corporate and government affairs for Discovery, Inc., said the company's media platforms, which include HGTV, TLC, the Food Network and ID, reach 25% of American women on any given night. "We're able to galvanize the power of our reach and the fact that we have passionate audiences in order to truly make an impact on important issues," Verveer said. She added the channels will coordinate with business partners to raise money for the groups Save the Children and Share Our Strength, and publicize opportunities to contribute, volun-

They're also pushing Congress to extend the pandemic Electronic Balance Transfer program that provided income-eligible families with money on cards to be used in grocery stores. Will Dittmar, state director in California and Washington for Save the Children, works with Discovery's RISE program, which stands for 'Reducing Inequality and Supporting Empowerment.' They help meet families' basic needs in low-income rural parts of Fresno and Tulare Counties, in the Morongo Valley and the Palmdale/ Lancaster area. "That's what we do at Save the Children is needs assessment," Dittmar said. "And then, immediately pivoting to find the resources to meet those needs; everything from direct cash resources for families to grants to schools to make sure they can continue their feeding programs in the summer." He said RISE has spent millions on emergency food boxes, and supports educational programs for 9,500 kids at 26 rural schools in the Golden State.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Smithsonian Institution in Washington is working to recruit a new generation of Latino docents and curators, so they can help tell their community's stories. The museum will open its new Molina Family Latino Gallery next year.

In 2008, Lumina Foundation set a goal that 60% of Americans of all age groups will hold a certificate, a degree or high-quality credential by 2025. The foundation tracks post-high-school attainment through its

Smithsonian Latino Center executive director Eduardo Diaz said he recruits interns where he knows he can find a high percentage of Latino art history majors: at the Vincent Price Museum at East Los Angeles College.

Support for this reporting was provided by Lumina Foundation.

"We know that the majority of Latinos and Latinas who are enrolled in post-secondary education are enrolled at community colleges, not four-year institutions," he said. The Smithsonian's outreach is part of a larger effort to narrow the education gap after high school for Latinos in the United States. Right now, only 27% of Latinos ages 25 to 54 have earned a credential, an associate's degree or higher, compared with 51.3% of Americans overall. Latinos make up 13% of the U.S. population -- and one in four school children. Paola Santana, strategy officer for state policy at the nonprofit Lumina Foundation, said its success is crucial to the country's progress, which means encouraging career training and education beyond high school. "Those attainment gaps really have to be eradicated in order for us to reach our goals of racial justice and equity," she said. Lumina Foundation funds projects around the country to remove roadblocks to students' potential -- including supports such as child care and transportation. Other programs seek out Latino students and connect them to jobs or higher-ed opportunities.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

Amber Garrison Duncan, Lumina's strategy director, said a supportive campus culture and strong counseling programs are key.
