as elecciones del 3 de noviembre ya empezaron y ningún grupo racial o étnico de los Estados Unidos tiene mejores razones para participar, como nunca, que la comunidad latina. Ningún grupo está siendo devastado de manera tan desproporcionada por la pandemia del COVID-19 que nosotros. De acuerdo con los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), más del 30% de los nuevos contagios donde se conoce el origen étnico, corresponden a latinos, a pesar de que somos el 18% de la población. los hispanos enfrentamos un doble muro para acceder o solicitar beneficios por desempleo, y existe una desaceleración económica en sectores que emplean altas proporciones de hispanos, como la industria de la hospitalidad. Es una tormenta perfecta agravada por la discriminación, las injusticias raciales o por políticas como la temible Regla de la Carga Pública, que ha creado temor entre los latinos más vulnerables a recibir beneficios cuando más lo necesitan, así como por la injustificable decisión del Congreso de marginar a millones de familias que tienen un miembro indocumentado, de los beneficios urgentes de los paquetes de rescate económico. La gran interrogante es si estas razones son suficientes para motivar a los votantes latinos a participar en 2020. Acaso ninguna organización de defensa de los latinos tiene más experiencia para responder esa pregunta que UnidosUS. En un lapso de 10 años, ha logrado registrar a más de 700,000 personas elegibles para votar y, porque sabe cuánto está en juego, lanzó este año una de sus ambiciosas campañas de movilización de votantes llamada “Adelante 2020”. Clarissa Martínez, la vicepresidenta adjunta de UnidosUS, me dijo que si se mantienen las tendencias, hasta 15 millones de latinos podrían participar en el proceso 2020, una cifra récord, pero también que no existe impedimento por el cual esa cifra no pueda ascender a 30 millones, si consideramos que en este momento hay 32 millones de latinos elegibles para votar. “En nuestra comunidad, aún cuando algunos no estén muy motivados por un candidato u otro, una de las motivaciones más poderosas hemos sido nosotros mismos. Millones de votantes Latinos han ido a las urnas en elecciones pasadas para elevar la voz de nuestra comunidad y seguir incrementando nuestra influencia electoral. he November 3rd elections have already started and no racial or ethnic group in the United States has a better reason to participate than the Latino community. No group is being so disproportionately devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic than we are. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 30% of new infections where ethnic origin is known correspond to Latinos, even though we are 18% of the population. And the reason is that we do the riskiest but most necessary essential jobs. No group has a lower proportion of access to health than the Latino community, a phenomenon that has more serious implications during the pandemic. Millions of Latino adults and children benefited
Hispanics face a double wall to access or apply for unemployment benefits, and there is an economic slowdown in sectors that employ high proportions of Hispanics, such as the hospitality industry. It is a perfect storm compounded by discrimination, racial injustices, or policies like the fearsome Public Charge Rule, which has created fear among Latinos more vulnerable to receiving benefits when they need it most, as well as by the unjustifiable decision of Congress to marginalize millions of families who have an undocumented member, from the urgent benefits of economic rescue packages. The big question is whether these reasons are enough to motivate Latino voters to participate in 2020. Perhaps no Latino advocacy organization has more experience answering that question than UnidosUS. In a span of 10 years, it has managed to register more than 700,000 people eligible to vote and, because it knows how much is at stake, this year launched one of its ambitious voter mobilization campaigns called “Adelante 2020”. Clarissa Martínez, the deputy vice president of UnidosUS, told me that if the trends continue, up to 15 million Latinos could participate in the 2020 process, a record number, but also that there is no impediment by which that number cannot rise to 30 million, if we consider that at this moment there are 32 million Latinos eligible to vote. “In our community, even when some are not very motivated by one candidate or another, one of the most powerful motivations has been ourselves. Millions of Latino voters have gone to the polls in past elections to raise the voice of our community and continue to increase our electoral influence. And that voice is sorely needed in these moments, when Hispanics have shown that we are essential workers, helping the country move forward. And we are going to show that we are also essential voters for the same reasons: for family, community, and country," said Clarissa. We have plenty of reasons to vote or, if we are not eligible, to encourage family, friends, and colleagues to do so. But our footprint goes through the requirement to register to vote and there is little time left. In some states, the deadline expires one month before November 3, so do so now and participate. Other groups are doing the same. Getting involved has never been easier by mail, early, or on Election Day. JAZZ, MUROS Y “ABLANDANDO CORAZONES”
El folklor mexicano del Son Jarocho se encuentra con el maestro del Jazz afro-latino Arturo O´Farrill en el documental “Fandango at the Wall”

ectó de manera personal, estar viajando y conocer a todas esas personas de diferentes partes del mundo y ver que existe esa unidad a través de la música?
l Son Jarocho es la música tradicional del área tropical del estado mexicano de Veracruz. Se trata de una fusión de tradiciones indígenas, africanas y españolas de 300 años de antigüedad que se convierte en un sonido diverso y único que todavía se escucha mucho en la región.
Kabir: Bueno, para mí esto es una historia muy personal porque soy hijo de inmigrantes de la India. Mis padres vinieron con muy poco dinero hace muchas, muchas lunas desde la India a América. Así que estoy muy cercano a la experiencia del inmigrante americano, de haber crecido en un hogar dónde todo el mundo fue bienvenido a quedarse y a pasar tiempo con nosotros.
El documental musical “Fandango at the Wall” se enfoca en éste género musical y se pensaba estrenar mundialmente en el Cinequest Film Festival en el centro de San José en Marzo de este año. Un par de días antes du su primera proyección al mundo (que sería complementada con Músicos en vivo de Son Jarocho en el cine), la pandemia COVID-19 empezó a propagarse en Estados Unidos y en el mundo. Si hay algo bueno que reportar desde entonces, es el hecho de que “Fandango at the Wall” fue adquirido por HBO, por lo que ahora tiene su lugar en el canal y en su plataforma de streaming “HBO Max.” Tuve la oportunidad de hablar con los directores encargados de la película en Marzo, lo que sigue en éste escrito es nuestra conversación acera de la maravillosa y diversa historia de la música, del espíritu humano que logra superar los límites físicos, y cómo esta aventura ayudó a los directores y a los involucrados, a crear una comunidad que se extiende globalmente. El director Varda Bar-Kar y el productor ganador de Grammy Kabir Sehgal inicialmente tuvieron la idea de viajar al festival de música “Fandango Fronterizo”, un evento anual que se celebra desde el 2008, para grabar a los músicos y al público que se reúne en ambos lados del muro fronterizo a tocar Son Jarocho. Después de hablar con el fundador del evento, Jorge Francisco Castillo, fueron convencidos de grabar un proyecto con un propósito todavía más grande: Irían a las selvas y comunidades del Veracruz rural para conocer a los maestros del Son Jarocho, y los reclutarían para colaborar no solamente en el muro fronterizo que se encuentra en el Océano Pacífico sino también a la Ciudad de Nueva York para tocar junto a una orquesta de Jazz Afro-Latino dirigido por el fundador y director ganador de Grammy Arturo O´Farrill. Gracias Kabir y Varda por tomarse el tiempo de hablar sobre su película. Para empezar, me gustaría saber un poco de su historia y ¿Cómo ésta los llevó a trabajar en “Fandango at the Wall”? Varda: Bueno, antes de esto, yo había dirigido y escrito varios guiones que aún no han sido producidos. También escribí, dirigí y produje un largometraje documental llamado “Big Voice” que fue recogido por Netflix, es un documental musical acerca de un director de coro de una secundaria. Ésa fue mi primera experiencia haciendo un documental musical. Antes de esto, había hecho documentales cortos y había dirigido un largometraje documental llamado “A Million Spokes” que trata acerca del recorrido de bicicleta más largo del mundo que toma lugar en Iowa, y atraviesa todo el estado. Entonces, sí tengo mucha experiencia y como que todo se conjuntó. En esta película me sentí mucho más seguro con mi conocimiento acerca de la estructura y también con mi método de hacer una película documental, que en mi opinión es muy único, ya que me gusta crear una historia y ver a cada una de las personas en la película como un personaje y la manera en que los llegamos a conocer. Mi meta con “Big Voice” y también con “Fandango at the Wall” [fue] crear una experiencia de sumersión para el público, para que no se sintieran separados. Sienten como si estuvieran adentro viviéndolo con todos. Esto para mí es lo máximo – cuando realmente estás adentro de la película, básicamente, como miembro de la audiencia. Kabir: Yo he sido músico y productor durante mucho tiempo, alrededor de 15 años, y Arturo

(O´Farrill) y yo nos conocimos cuando estaba en la universidad y él fue invitado a dirigir a nuestro ensamble de Jazz. Hemos trabajado juntos en probablemente cuatro o cinco álbumes, produciendo cinco, y entonces en el 2016 estábamos cenando e intentando pensar en ideas para nuestro próximo proyecto. Él se había encontrado con un artículo sobre Jorge Francisco Castillo y su festival fronterizo. Bueno, éste definitivamente tendría que ser nuestro próximo proyecto. Entonces, nuestro pensamiento inmediato fue crear un álbum de Jazz alrededor de esto. Esta es una muy buena historia. Parece una experiencia muy visual y tenemos mucho patrimonio cultural compartido entre Estados Unidos y México. Y al mismo tiempo me acordé de qué es lo que estaba pasando. En el 2016 se llevó a cabo una elección en la cual México estaba invocado. Entonces, Arturo hizo un álbum. Y yo le dije, bueno, déjame escribir un libro sobre la historia de México y América, y lo hice. En el 2018, solo un par de semanas antes de que fuéramos al muro fronterizo, tuvimos la sensación de que debíamos convertir esto en una película. Entonces buscamos y por suerte encontramos a Varda y todo se conjuntó dentro de semanas y empezamos a grabar en el muro. Así que esto básicamente es una continuación del trabajo que hemos hecho Arturo y yo, usando música para servir como partidario musical. También nos dimos cuenta de que no son solamente los políticos y los diplomáticos los que crean la política exterior. Es artista y activista. No podemos sentarnos a esperar a que nuestros gobiernos creen las políticas. Nosotros como personas deberíamos hacer intercambios de individuo a individuo, intercambio de persona a persona para crear el mundo que deseamos ver. Así que este proyecto se trata de crear una experiencia multimedia a través de la película, de la música, de la literatura. La gente de América son familias, amigos, primos, parientes. Entonces, esta fue nuestra visión que queríamos lograr. Y esperamos lograrlo con este proyecto. ¿Por qué sentiste que era importante no solamente contar la historia de la conexión entre música, migraciones y comunidad, pero específicamente para los músicos de Son Jarocho? Kabir: Históricamente, piensas en cómo la música Jazz fue realmente una visión del futuro en el que gente negra y blanca tocaron juntos en los 1930´s y 40´s. De hecho, la música fue muy avanzada para nuestros tiempos, en América ni siquiera se había eliminado la segregación, y nosotros ya teníamos un podio musical integrado. Lo mismo pasó aquí. Estábamos usando la música jazz para integrar a México en un tipo de música americana. Y otra vez, la música es algo avanzada para nuestros tiempos. Nuestro gobierno está diciendo una cosa, que debemos construir los muros, pero nosotros estamos usando la música como fuerza de integración.
Así que para mí, las fronteras siempre han sido líneas imaginarias. Y las decisiones acerca de quién pertenece aquí, fueron tomadas por hombres. Realmente no puedes contener el espíritu humano. Es lo que la música logra tan bien. En cuanto te conectes a través de la música, no hay fronteras. Y particularmente en este caso, tenemos Son Jarocho y un cantante de Broadway. Tenemos músicos del Medio Oriente en este proyecto.
Todo fue muy orgánico, y decidimos que si lo vamos a hacer, queremos juntar la música Son Jarocho con un grupo grande de jazz. Y esas tradiciones normalmente no armonizan, pero decidimos juntarlos.
Todos somos de lugares distintos, pero vamos en la misma dirección con este proyecto. Por lo tanto, presentarnos en el muro fue un momento muy emocional, especialmente porque nos impactó que el poder de la música es capaz de erradicar fronteras y unirnos.
A lo largo de la película puedes ver tomas que cortan hacia la representación del espacio sinfónico. Estos son arreglos hechos específicamente para este proyecto que amplifica una canción en particular. Entonces la visión básicamente fue derrumbar los muros entre éstas tradiciones musicales.
Así que esta es mi historia y cómo me identifico con la experiencia migratoria, y porqué quería llevar a cabo este proyecto. Me siento bendecido de contar con los demás colaboradores. Digo, Arturo nació en México, él es inmigrante. Y Varda, esta historia de migración es muy cercana a ella.
Varda: Jorge was very instrumental. Kabir connected me with Jorge and Jorge talked about who would be in the film and Kabir and Jorge talked about it as well. Jorge wanted to make sure that the people he picked were, highly accomplished in son jarocho, well respected and also were very accomplished in the different instruments that they played.
Varda: Sí, yo nací en Inglaterra y mi mamá es sudafricana. Mi papá es rumano. Y muy poco después de que yo naciera, mi familia se mudó a Israel. Después viví en Inglaterra y también en Estados Unidos. Así que si alguien me pregunta de dónde soy, de hecho ni siquiera tengo una respuesta.
Varda: Jorge fue muy instrumental. Kabir me conectó con Jorge y me habló acerca de quién iba a estar en la película; Kabir y Jorge también hablaron de eso. Jorge quería estar seguro de que la gente que escogiera, fuera muy dotada en el Son Jarocho, muy respetada y experimentada con los diferentes instrumentos que tocaban. Entonces, él escogió a los artistas que le dieron la sensación de entender la gran visión del proyecto, la posibilidad de compartir la filosofía y la manera de ser, la vida y cultura del Son Jarocho con el mundo. Y entonces, cuando él y yo hablamos específicamente de los personajes, queríamos que las personas fueran muy diferentes entre sí. Yo quería que los personajes fueran distintos, y que cada quien tuviera sus maneras y puntos de vista contrastantes para que así sobresalieran. Y también quería contar con algunas mujeres. Esto también significó viajar. Algunas de esas personas viven en áreas muy remotas, así que teníamos que asegurarnos de que podíamos visitar a todos, a pesar de las distancias muy largas, como viste en la película. A veces tuvimos que manejar seis horas en una calle sin pavimentar para llegar con una persona y luego otras nueve horas para llegar con otra persona, y los viajes siempre fueron terrestres. Así fue como él seleccionó a la gente. Las relaciones fueron también muy interesantes y bonitas. Como había mencionado antes, fue una experiencia de sumersión en la cual llegamos a conocer a la gente, aprendimos acerca de ellos y logramos que nos abrieran las puertas a sus casas. Adonde quiera que fuéramos, siempre fue así. Estaban tan abiertos y hospitalarios porque es como parte de su tradición, lo que es una de las principales diferencias entre nuestras culturas – aquí estamos más desconfiados. Allá te hacen sentir como si formaras parte de la familia. Realmente te sientes amado. También me preguntaba, ¿Cómo esto los af-
Soy realmente una persona del mundo. Siento que éste proyecto me dio un regalo, porque realmente amo la diversidad. Me encantan todos los diferentes tipos de personas. Entiendo que a donde quiera que uno vaya, existe una humanidad compartida. Y también mi aprecio por la cultura y el arte es muy profundo. Creo que el arte siempre me ha dado una sensación de pertenencia, a través de la expresión y a través de realizar cosas es como yo encuentro mi lugar en el mundo. Siempre lo he hecho así, desde una edad muy temprana. Así que me puedo identificar mucho con esta historia, con la historia del inmigrante, la migración y de su papel de enriquecimiento en vez de cerrar las puertas. De hecho es algo para celebrar y para pensar en cómo podemos convivir, qué podemos aportar a la gente que huye de la violencia, de las drogas y de regímenes opresivos y de guerra, en vez de decir “quédense afuera.” ¿Qué es lo que esperas que la gente se lleve de “Fandango at the Wall”? Varda: Creo que en el fondo me gustaría que el público sintiera alegría al ver la película. Que amaran la experiencia y que formen parte de este viaje. La audiencia va reforzar la sensación de amor por nuestro vecino México, su gente y la idea de conocer, experimentar y aprender acerca de culturas nuevas y tener esa sensación de asombro y aventura por nuestro mundo a través de la música y la cultura. Idealmente, si podemos tener un miembro de la audiencia que tenga un miedo profundo a México y a los Mexicanos, un miedo profundo a los migrantes y a “otros” y que apoye la idea de aislar a su país construyendo muros, si podemos tener un miembro de la audiencia que se acerque a la película con ésta perspectiva, y después de verla, su corazón se ablanda y se hace un poco más abierto, más receptivo de otros y de culturas diferentes, esto significaría un sueño hecho realidad en los términos de esta película, básicamente ablandando y abriendo corazones y mentes.

The Mexican folk of son jarocho meets Afro Latin Jazz master Arturo O'Farrill in documentary “Fandango at the Wall”

S
on jarocho is a traditional folk music from the tropical area of the Mexican state of Veracruz. A 300-year-old fusion of indigenous, African, and Spanish traditions into a diverse and unique sound which is still going strong in the region. The music documentary “Fandango at the Wall” focuses on this music and was initially supposed to have its world premiere at Cinequest Film Festival in downtown San Jose in March of this year. Mere days before its first screening to the world, (which would be complete with actual son jarocho musicians at the theater) the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread into the US and across the world. If there is any good to report since then, it’s that “Fandango at the Wall” was acquired by HBO, and now has a home on the channel and its streaming platform, “HBO Max”. I had the opportunity to speak to the filmmakers behind the film in March, and what follows in this write up is the conversation about the wonderful and diverse story of music and human spirit overcoming physical borders, and how this adventure helped the filmmakers and their subjects create a community that extends globally. Director Varda Bar-Kar and Grammy-winning producer Kabir Sehgal originally had the idea to travel to the music festival “Fandango Fronterizo”, a yearly event since 2008, and film the musicians and audiences who gather on both sides of the border wall to perform son jarocho music. After talking to the founder of the event, Jorge Francisco Castillo, they were led down to film a project with a greater purpose: Going into the rural Veracruz jungles and communities and meeting the masters of san jarocho, and recruiting them to collaborate not only at the border wall that meets the Pacific Ocean, but also to New York City to play alongside an Afro Latin Jazz orchestra led by the founder and Grammy-winning conductor Arturo O'Farrill.

In this film I felt much more confident in my understanding of structure and also my approach to documentary filmmaking, which I think is unique in that I really like to create a story and to see each of the people in the film as a character in that story and how we get to know them. My goal with "Big Voice" and also "Fandango at the Wall" [was] to create an immersive experience for the audience so they don't feel separate. They feel like they're in it and they're going through it with everybody. Truly that to me is the ultimate - is when you're actually inside the film, basically, as an audience member.

And some of these people live in very remote areas, so we also had to make sure that we could get to all of them, even though it was very long distances, as you saw in the film. We literally sometimes would have to go like six hours on a dirt road to get to someone and then another nine hours to get to someone else, because it was always a road trip. So those are the ways that he selected the people. Kabir: I've been a musician and a producer for a long time now, some fifteen years and Arturo (O'Farrill) and I actually met when I was in university, and he was a guest, leading our jazz ensemble. And we've worked on probably four or five albums together, producing five albums, and so in 2016 he and I were having dinner and we were trying to think of ideas for our next project. And he had come across this article about Jorge Francisco Castillo and his border festival. Well, we should definitely make a project out of it.

So, our immediate go-to was to create a jazz album around it. This is a great story. This seems like a very visual experience and there's a lot of shared heritage in the United States and Mexico. And at the same time, remember what was happening. We had an election going on in 2016 where Mexico was invoked.
So that was the vision we set out to achieve. And hopefully we do that with this project.
So then Arturo would make an album. And I was like, well, let me write a book on the history of Mexico and America, which I did. In 2018, just a few weeks before we were going to go to the border wall, we felt like we should probably turn this into a film. So, we reached out and luckily found Varda and everything kind of came together within weeks and we started filming at the wall. So, this is sort of a continuation of the work Arturo and I've been doing using music to serve as music advocacy. And realizing that it's not
It's artist and activist. And we can't sit around, wait for our governments to create policies. We as people should do individual to individual exchanges, person to person exchanges to sort of create the world we want to see. So, this project is all about creating a multimedia experience through film, through the music, through the literature. The people of the Americas are families and friends and cousins, relatives.
Why did you feel that it was important not only to tell the story of the connection between music, migrations, and community, but specifically for the son jarocho musicians? Kabir: Historically, you think about [how] jazz music was really a vision of the future where black and white people played together in the 1930s and 40s. In fact, that music was ahead of our times, America was not even integrated, and we had an integrated bandstand. Same thing here. We were using jazz music to integrate Mexico into sort of American music. And again, music is sort of ahead of our times. Our government is saying one thing that, we should build the walls, but we're using music as this integrating force.
Everything was very organic, and we decided that, if we're gonna do this. We want to bring together son jarocho music and a big band jazz band. And those traditions usually don't go together, but we decided to put them together. You see throughout the film there's all these shots throughout the movie that cut to the symphony space portrayal. Those are arrangements made specifically for this project that amplify a particular song. So that was the vision was, to sort of tear down walls between musical traditions. Varda: Jorge was very instrumental. Kabir connected me with Jorge and Jorge talked about who would be in the film and Kabir and Jorge talked about it as well. Jorge wanted to make sure that the people he picked were, highly accomplished in son jarocho, well respected and also were very accomplished in the different instruments that they played. And so, he selected these artists who he felt would see the big vision of it, the possibility of sharing the philosophy and the way of being and the life, the culture of son jarocho with the world. And then when he and I spoke specifically about the characters, we wanted people to be very different from each other. I wanted the characters to be distinct and for each of them to have very distinct ways and points of view so that they would stand out. And I
And then also, it was kind of interesting and nice to see [the] relationships. As I mentioned before, it has had this immersive experience where we get to meet people and learn about them and have them opening up their homes to us. Everyone we went, it was really like that. They literally were so open and so welcoming because that's sort of in their tradition, that's one of the distinctions between our cultures - here we're more suspicious. There they make you feel like you're part of the family. You literally feel loved. And I was wondering how that affected you guys personally, traveling around and meeting all these people from different parts of the world and seeing that there is that unity through music. Kabir: Well, this for me is a very personal story for me because I'm the son of Indian immigrants. My parents came with very little money many, many moons ago from India to America. So, I'm very close to the American immigrant experience, having grown up in a household where everyone was welcome to stay and be with us. So, to me, borders have always been sort of imaginary lines usually. And they're man made decisions on who belongs where. Really, you can't contain the human spirit. That's what music does so well. It's like once you connect through music, there are no borders. And particularly in this case, we have Son jarocho, we have a Broadway singer. We have musicians from the Middle East on this project.
We're all from different places, but we're all going in the same direction on this project. And so, it was a very emotional time performing at the wall, especially because it sort of struck us that power music is sort of erasing borders [and] bringing us together. So that's my story and how I relate to the immigrant experience, why I really wanted to make this project happen. And I've been blessed with other collaborators. I mean Arturo was born in Mexico, he's an immigrant. And Varda, this story of immigration is close to her. Varda: Yeah, I was I was born in England and my mother is South African. My father is Romanian. And very soon after I was born, our family moved to Israel. And then I lived in England and I lived in the United States. So, when someone asks me where I'm from, I don't even have an answer, actually. I'm truly a person of the globe. I feel this has given me a gift, it's a true gift because I really do love diversity. I love all the different types of people and all. I understand that no matter where you go, there's a shared humanity. And it’s also really elevated my appreciation for culture and art. I think I’ve always found my belonging through art, through expressions through making things is how I find my place in the world. I always did that from a very, very young age. So, I very much relate to this story, to the story of the immigrant and of migration and of the role of it as an enrichment rather than something to shut out. It's actually something to embrace, and to figure out how can we live together. What can we provide to people who are fleeing drug violence and oppressive regimes and war, rather than saying, "keep out.” What do you hope that people take from "Fandango at the Wall"? Varda: I think in the most fundamental way I would like audiences to feel joy watching the film. And to love the experience of watching the film and being part of this journey. Either people will be reinforced in their feeling of their love for our neighbor Mexico and for the people of Mexico and for the idea of meeting and experiencing other cultures and learning about new cultures and having that sense of wonder and adventure, of our world through music and culture.
Thank you Kabir and Varda for taking the time to talk about your film. To start off I wanted to know a bit about your background and how this led to working on “Fandango at the Wall”? Varda: Well, prior to this, I had directed and written several scripted screenplays that have not yet been produced. I also wrote, directed, and produced a feature documentary called "Big Voice" that was picked up by Netflix, which is a music documentary about a high school choir director.
Ideally if we can even have one audience member who has a deep fear of Mexico and Mexicans and a deep fear of the migrants and "others" and want to support the idea of isolating this country and building walls, if we have one audience member who comes into the audience with that perspective, sees this and the heart softens and opens a bit, , they become a little bit more open, little bit more receptive to others and different cultures, that would be a dream come true in terms of the film, softening and opening hearts and minds, basically.
That was my first experience making a music documentary. Prior to that, I'd done short documentaries and I had directed a feature documentary called "A Million Spokes", about the longest, largest bike tour in the world that takes place in Iowa, that crosses the whole state of Iowa. On Wednesday he amended that to "stand down," but the group, which has been involved in violent confrontations at anti-racism rallies, welcomed the shout-out. Melvin Medina, public policy and advocacy director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut said the president's initial comments were extremely divisive. "Donald Trump, he's touting the line of law and order," Medina said. "And I think he has weaponized the rhetoric around law and order to be targeted against a movement that values Black lives." The Proud Boys posted ecstatic responses on social media and began raising money off it by selling T-shirts emblazoned with the president's
The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, said Proud Boys do have a presence in the Nutmeg State. Medina noted last year a police officer in East Hampton retired early and resigned from the Proud Boys after it was revealed that he was a dues-paying member of the group. "His reasoning for leaving the Proud Boys membership was because he believed that the Proud Boys would be attacked by the left wing, and not recognizing that actually the Proud Boys espouse an ideology that is harmful and hateful," Medina added. A 2001 report on extremism in Connecticut found a small presence of other extremist groups, including the Klan, The World Church of the Creator, The Council of Conservative Citizens and the National Alliance.

t’s true that climate change is already affecting tree distribution and forest cover in the United States (as well as everywhere), but only time will tell which tree species are most successful at adapting and whether we will lose significant amounts of forest cover overall. “A walk in the woods or a stroll on a tree-lined street could be a very different experience just a few decades from now,” says U.S. Forest Service researcher Stephanie Worley Firley. “Higher temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and longer growing seasons predicted for the future could require that some tree species will have to move—or be moved—into new areas where habitat will be more suitable.” She adds that some tree species may be able to stay in place by adapting to new conditions, but many others are unlikely to be able to adapt and “may succumb to the pressures of climate change.” One example of an iconic tree species that is already suffering from the effects of climate change is the Quaking Aspen, the most widely distributed tree species in North America. To day the tree is still common in higher elevation regions of Colorado and Utah as well as throughout the rest of the American West, but that might change in the coming decades. Researchers have been tracking the decline of aspens in Colorado for at least 20 years at the hands of climate change and related stressors. Given their shallow root systems, aspens are particularly sensitive to drought; warmer, drier weather overall as a result of global warming means more drought and more trouble for the trees moving for-
ward. Researchers worry that aspens may be gone from the southern (and driest) band of its range within decades, and foresee drastic declines in the tree’s overall distribution as temperatures inch up, drought pervades and forest fires rage throughout the region. Another iconic tree that has already been hit hard by global warming is the Sugar maple, famous as the source of Vermont maple syrup. Warmer winters have already shortened the syrup “tapping” season by more than 10% and if the trend continues there won’t be enough winter to sustain the $200 million/year Vermont maple syrup industry. Some other tree species on the ropes thanks to climate change include Balsam fir, Black ash, Paper birch, White pine, Tamarack and Red spruce. Researchers from the North Carolina-based Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center are using forest inventory and analysis data from the U.S. Forest Service to compare where tree species occur presently with a wider range of where they could move or expand given rising temperatures and other changing landscape conditions. By looking at how landscape, weather and temperature conditions will change over the next three decades based on a conservative model of climate change, the researchers can start to project where the most suitable conditions for different types of trees might occur across the country by 2050. This kind of knowledge can help land managers prepare for the changes coming and can help planners map out forward-looking, climate-friendly zoning patterns. La 22 ofrece a la comunidad latina “la oportunidad de decidir cuándo dónde y cómo trabajamos”, dijo Cruz al enfatizar que esa flexibilidad es especialmente importante para familias latinas que niños y adolescentes que necesitan atención. El presidente de la Cámara de Comercio Negra en California, Jay King, explicó que en vísperas del Día del Trabajo, o Labor Day, miles de afroamericanos californianos se encuentran desempleados en un índice de 14.6 por ciento, de acuerdo con la Oficina de Investigaciones Económicas. En el país la pandemia ha impactado al 40 por ciento de los negocios negros, agregó, “así que los empleos como conducir se han convertido en esenciales para la gente de color que quedó sin empleo”. King explicó que ahora uno de cada diez conductores es negro, y sin la Proposición 22 muchos perderán su trabajo. Rubén Guerra, de la Asociación de Negocios Latinos de California, coincidió en que conducir se ha convertido en la única alternativa para personas que durante la pandemia han perdido su trabajo. Dijo que su servicio como conductores “ya era esencial antes y lo es durante la pandemia, y es crítico que salvemos el trabajo esencial de conducir”. Algunos de los dirigentes, quienes participaron en una conferencia virtual este jueves, criticaron que decenas de miles de empleos de conductores estén en riesgo por decisiones de políticos que han estado equivocados. l señor Guadalupe Ramos acude tres veces por semana a un centro de diálisis en Hisperia desde hace tres años para recibir tratamiento y asegura que nunca ha visto que en ese centro se requiera de un médico que permanezca en el lugar permanentemente. “Lo que yo he visto es que los tres técnicos y las enfermeras son muy profesionales; ellos hacen todo el trabajo”, dijo el señor Ramos en plática por teléfono. De acuerdo con cálculos del señor Ramos, él habría acudido al centro de diálisis unas 468 ocasiones a lo largo de tres años sin que en sus diálisis intervenga algún médico. “En promedio, una vez por semana se presenta al centro mi médico frenólogo para revisar los resultados de mis análisis de sangre y darme recomendaciones, o decirme que haga cambios en cantidad de medicamento o en alimentación si lo ha considerado necesario”, dijo. “Eso ha sido todo lo que se ha necesitado del doctor desde que comencé con los diálisis”, explicó. El tema de la presencia del médico en el centro de diálisis es importante para el señor Ramos al entrevistarlo con relación a la Proposición 23 que será llevada a los electores en las boletas en noviembre.
A su parecer, esa proposición tiene una visión irrealista sobre una presunta necesidad de contar con médicos de planta. “Mucho me temo que van a haber centros de diálisis que cierren porque no encuentran doctores de planta, y los que sí encuentren médicos, van a estar saturados, por hacer el trabajo de los que tengan que cerrar”, manifestó. Pero el señor Ramos observó otro problema adicional, pues “si cierran unos centros por falta de médicos, los que continúen operando seguramente nos van a cobrar más caro a los pacientes, porque de nosotros tendrán que sacar para pagar doctores”. Su temor es que en centros saturados y caros, el servicio ya no pueda ser tan profesional como el que ha recibido estos tres años. “Para mí, que voy a diálisis tres veces por semana, la 23 es una proposición hasta peligrosa porque yo necesito esos tres diálisis semanales para sobrevivir; es preocupante. Creo que no fue una proposición bien pensada”, comentó el señor Guadalupe Ramos.

OPEN SPACE AUTHORITY URBAN GRANT PROGRAM AWARDS OVER $200,000 IN MEASURE Q FUNDS TO LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS $1M in funding is available in the 2020 cycle. The latest awardees are recipients of the Small Grant awards, the first subset of grantees to be chosen in this cycle. an Jose, CA - The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority’s Board of Directors has awarded $206,324 in Measure Q grant funding to five nonprofits and a school district as part of the Small Grants category for the 2020 cycle of the Urban Grant Program. The Urban grants fund a variety of programming, including environmental education on the topics of food and agriculture, as well as environmental stewardship, with the goal of providing access to nature within the urban areas. This latest grant round increases the total number of Urban grants awarded by the Authority since 1999 to 64, amounting to over $12.5M in grant funding that the Authority has provided to community organizations to connect people to nature in the urban areas. Creating opportunities for urban communities to interact with nature and participate in environmental education programming has been a high priority for the Authority, and the grant program is one method for achieving this goal. Measure Q, overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2014, is one source of funding for the Urban Grant Program, increasing the Authority’s ability to provide greater investment in nature and better serve the communities it represents. Measure Q also funded Understanding Our Community, a two-part study to help the Authority fully understand the demographics and nature-based needs of residents in its jurisdiction. These projects work towards the Authority’s larger goal to help urban communities overcome barriers of accessing nature, and to make this access as equitable as possible. “This Urban Grant Program helps us diversify our work,” said Megan Dreger, Grants Administrator for the Open Space Authority. “We do a great job in supporting the areas uninhabited by humans, which is so important, and the Urban Grant Program helps further our mission and connect people to nature near home. We want to protect nature, and we want to bring nature to people, too.” The Urban Grant Program, launched in 2016, is divided into Small and Large Grants to help provide a variety of opportunities for worthy community-based projects to be supported. One Small Grant recipient is Environmental Volunteers, a nonprofit with the goal of creating opportunities for environmental education, stewardship, and leadership. “We are so grateful for the Open Space Authority’s grant to power nature access and science education for thousands of kids,” said Diana Garcia, a Board Member for Environmental Volunteers. “We will be using our award from the Urban Grant Program to help fund new nature programs and resources for Santa Clara Valley Schools. This funding will help us give youth in the community the opportunity to learn about the natural world.” Another recipient of the grant awards is Sacred Heart Community Service for their program, La Mesa Verde. This program, connecting urban gardeners and community members in San Jose, works to create leaders in food justice. “We are working to provide equitable access to healthy food in San Jose and cultivate leaders in this mission,” said Roberto Gil, a Director at La Mesa Verde. “And the funding from this grant will help us achieve this goal.” The importance of the Urban Grant Program has been underscored by the difficulties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant funding has allowed many of these programs to continue providing environmental education and supporting staff throughout these difficult times. “We are so proud to be making direct investments in local communities and connecting all people to nature,” said Andrea Mackenzie, the General Manager of the Authority. “Through the Urban Grant Program, we’ve brought nature to many urban communities across the jurisdiction that lacked it, by greening neighborhoods, seeding community gardens, teaching families to grow their own food, creating parks, and connecting children and families to nature through environmental education programs.” The Authority looks forward to the positive impact the 2020 grantees will make in their communities over the coming year. "So, you know, when we compare the 50% students of color to 20% teachers of color, it's important to emphasize that we don't just want teachers of color for students of color, but really a diverse teacher workforce for all of our students," Carver-Thomas said. Virginia's student population is almost 50% nonwhite, but only 21% of the state's teachers are Black or Brown, according to a Virginia Department of Education report. The bill before Congress asks for $40 million to launch the program. It's been about a year since it was introduced in the U.S. House. Carver-Thomas emphasized the timeliness of increasing the number of teachers of color in the nation, and said there's data to show, for instance,
