ore than 66 million voters had already cast their ballots at the time of writing this column, one week before the November 3 elections. This equates to nearly 20 million more votes than were cast early during the 2016 election.

If the goal was simply to break records, the goal has been achieved. In 2016, around 138 million electoral ballots were deposited before and during election day throughout the country. Early votes would thus be Para más información visita www.lar- reaching almost half of that total, and it is not yet the day of the elecedhispana.com

Each of the 66 million people who have already sent their vote by mail or braved the long lines to vote in person, did so for their candidates or their favorite causes: health, the economy, racial justice, immigration reform or the fight against climate change. But perhaps there is a higher reason that transcends political trends, religious affiliations, economic status, or racial or ethnic origin: that, amid the greatest public health crisis of our lives, it is simply immoral to be a mere bystander. But the unprecedented level of enthusiasm this year is accompanied by a mixed sense of anxiety and outrage, especially among minorities of color, at the perception of deliberate attempts to suppress the vote. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced that it succeeded in defusing 26 legal efforts to suppress or marginalize minority voting in 20 states and Puerto Rico. In some states they sought to eliminate or limit universal voting by mail, in others there were attempts to purge the electoral roll or to reduce the number of ballot boxes to a minimum.

Yet blatant attempts to suppress the vote appear, so far, to be backfiring: Many voters of color responded to the possibility of harassment or intimidation at the polls on November 3, voting early or by mail. Hence the historical figures for early voting participation.

With 32 million men and women of Latino descent eligible to vote during the current election cycle, we do not know precisely how many have done so or how many plan to do so, although there has been a notable increase in the participation of Latinas and youth.

GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM: STAYING HOME AND STAYING HEALTHY - NEW SUPPORT FOR CALIFORNIA TENANTS

A

s November approaches, millions of Americans are preparing for the most consequential election of our lifetimes. So much is at stake, and I encourage all Californians who can to cast a ballot to take this opportunity to shape the future of our country. But it’s also a time of dread for people who are having a hard time financially. The first of the month is approaching, and rent is coming due. If you are struggling to make rent and worried about eviction, know that you are not alone. In the Capitol, we are working hard to help you keep a roof over your head, and there are new resources and protections available to you right now. Tackling the housing crisis in California has been a priority for me since my first days in office. Access to safe and affordable housing is a cornerstone of the California Dream, one that must stay in reach of all Californians. For decades, the high cost of housing in California has been making it harder for families to get by, much less get ahead. Last year, we took action to help more Californians stay in their homes by enacting the strongest renter protections anywhere in the nation. But the COVID-19 pandemic presented us with even more challenges. Millions of Californians are potentially facing eviction this fall due to the impact of COVID-19—because they’ve lost jobs or hours, gotten sick or faced new costs like childcare. An eviction or foreclosure is always devastating, but it takes on a new danger amid a pandemic, when having a place to stay home and stay safe is so important.

If your landlord gives you a notice to “pay or quit” – saying you have a certain amount of time to pay the rent you owe, or you have to move out – but you can’t pay the full amount because you were affected by COVID, you can fill out a document and give it to your landlord.

It is called the Tenant Distress Form, and you can find it on our new HousingIsKey.ca.gov website. It is available in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Sign it and don’t delay. You must give your landlord this document within 15 days after you receive the “pay or quit” notice to be protected from eviction. You still owe the past rent, but if you cannot pay full rent because of COVID, you can’t get evicted for any rental debt that accrued between March and August of this year. And so long as you further pay at least 25 percent of the rent due between September of this year and January of next year, then you cannot be evicted for unpaid rent for that period, either. While this bill will give tenants some room to breathe, it is not permanent. As of now, the protection for evictions lasts only until February 1, 2021. That’s why we’ve been continuing to advocate for action from the federal government to help protect renters. We have made remarkable progress in helping more Californians keep a roof over their heads during this emergency, but even a state as large and influential as ours cannot tackle a national crisis on our own. We continue to ask the federal government to help us protect renters and homeowners, as well as other important steps like extending unemployment

We have also asked for support for state and local governments that are battling COVID-19 and facing difficult choices about their budgets. Without federal support for renters and homeowners, anyone out of a job, behind on their housing payments or struggling with medical bills will potentially face the prospect of losing their home. That’s not right, it’s not fair and it’s not good for our economy or communities. Investing in our renters can make a big difference around the country. It would help stabilize the housing market, help America recover from the devastating economic impacts of the pandemic and keep people in their homes. No matter what happens in this election or in D.C., California will keep doing everything in our power to help everyone stay safe, healthy and housed during this crisis – because all Californians deserve a place to call home. medida que se acerca noviembre, millones de estadounidenses se están preparando para la elección más importante de nuestras vidas.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us, it has not affected all of us equally. The impacts of COVID on lives and livelihoods have had disproportionate impacts on our diverse communities. Census data from July 2020 showed that, of all California renters who had fallen behind on rent, three-quarters were Latino or Black.

In partnership with the Legislature, we passed a bill to help people who had fallen behind on rent if they were impacted economically by COVID.

So if you owe rent from March 2020 through today because you were affected by COVID – if you lost your job, got sick or had your hours cut – you are protected from being evicted if you can take a few simple steps.

old and flu season, combined with an ongoing pandemic, is motivating many Americans to do everything possible to support immune health. Fortunately, simple lifestyle habits, like a healthy diet, can make a big difference in strengthening the body's defense system. But what foods are best - and why? When it comes to immune-boosting foods, most people immediately turn to orange juice for a quick fix of vitamin C. "While it is true that citrus fruit helps support the immune system, there are many other foods that offer an impressive profile of nutrients believed to maintain strong immunity," says registered dietitian Sheri Kasper. Here are three surprising, dietitian-recommended foods that can help ward off illness this cold and flu season. 1. Farmed salmon Farmed salmon offers outstanding nutrition that can help protect against everything from heart disease to depression. Specifically, farmed salmon supports the immune system thanks to two key nutrients that are uncommon in many other foods: vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. While vitamin D is often connected to bone health, emerging research out of Boston University suggests that it may also be vital to proper immune function. Few foods are naturally high in vitamin D, but a serving of farmed salmon offers nearly one-third of daily recommended needs. Omega-3 fatty acids, abundantly found in farmed salmon, are highly anti-inflammatory and support the immune system by reducing chronic inflammation. Kasper recommends choosing farmed salmon from Chile because it is sustainably raised, high in omega-3 fats and does not contain antibiotics or mercury.

Look for yogurt labeled as containing "Live and Active Cultures" and steer clear of yogurt that contains a lot of added sugar. Try plain yogurt and sweeten by adding fresh fruit and a small drizzle of honey. 3. Red bell peppers Red bell peppers are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support the immune system. One example is vitamin C, which encourages the production of the white blood cells that are responsible for defending the body against pathogens. Red bell peppers contain almost three times more vitamin C than oranges. They are also loaded with vitamin A and the antioxidant betacarotene, which can be converted to vitamin A in the body, when needed. Vitamin A is important in maintaining the natural mucus barriers located in the eyes, gut and other parts of the body. These barriers are designed to trap bacteria and are essential to optimal immunity. Be sure to choose red peppers because they have significantly more vitamin A, vitamin C and beta-carotene compared to green bell peppers. While a healthy diet cannot prevent seasonal colds, the flu or other viral illnesses, a combination of the right foods, plenty of sleep, regular exercise and a balanced lifestyle will arm your body's defenses and may help minimize the length and severity of illness

2. Yogurt Yogurt and other fermented foods contain healthy bacteria called probiotics. Probiotics are well-known for supporting digestive or "gut" health by preventing overgrowth of bad bacteria. But maintaining a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut is also believed to boost the immune system. "Most people do not realize that about 70 percent of your body's immune system is in your gut," says Kasper. In addition to containing probiotics, yogurt is also one of the few foods that is almost always fortified with vitamin D, which offers additional immune support.

The book posits soft skills like critical thinking, self-discipline and the ability to work in teams are crucial to a worker's success, now more than ever. Su Jin Jez, executive director of the nonprofit policy research group California Competes, said colleges and companies need to offer more paid internships so lower-income people can afford to take part. "And some of that is about workplace learning and apprenticeships, and creating that close connection between the practical, on-the-job skills and the application of learning," Jez stated.

ave Cortese is a lifelong resident of Santa Clara County and has been involved in public service work for nearly 30 years. With deep roots in the area, Cortese and his family have long been part of the fabric of San Jose’s evolution over the years.

I’d like us to take a page from a grassroots organizing playbook that recommends using written materials in many languages, posters, advertising in local publications, texting, phone calls and “boots on the ground” to make sure all our families know how to protect themselves and their children so they can stay healthy when they perform such essential tasks as buying groceries or picking up prescriptions

Now though, Cortese hopes to take his public service to the next level. This election season the current President of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is running for District 15 of the California State Senate, with one of the main reasons being, according to him, “the opportunity to expand my capacity to help people from the 2 million people in Santa Clara County to the 40 million people in the State of California.”

In recent years, Former Governor Jerry Brown referred to immigrants as an “economic engine that has helped propel” the California economy to make it one of the world’s strongest. With this in mind, how do you view California’s immigrant population as such an asset to the California economy in the coming years?

Taking a closer look Cortese’s accomplishments in helping his constituents, it’s evident he has long been a proponent of social progress and civil rights. These accomplishments include changes related to city transportation and pedestrian safety, helping sponsor an anti-Human Trafficking task force, and most recently writing a successful proposal to make Juneteenth a county holiday starting in 2021. Cortese’s past work in social issues also deserves highlighting, including working with the UFW (United Farm Workers) and raising awareness of farmworkers’ struggles, to working directly with Dolores Huerta to organize a children’s march on immigration, and fighting and successfully suing Donald Trump’s Administration on immigrants right to due process. Currently his extensive endorsements range from individuals like Dolores Huerta, Representative Ro Khanna, former Representative Mike Honda and Secretary of State Alex Padilla, to groups like the California Democratic Party, various local and state-wide teacher associations, unions and climate change organizations. The following is a recent Q&A with Cortese regarding his Senate race, his legacy in San Jose, and what issues he would want to challenge if he were to win. What are your factors or motivations to run for State Senate? What prompted you to pursue it? I learned long ago that the only reason to be in the business of public service is to help people. I have had the good fortune to be able to help many people through my role as an elected official over the years, whether it‘s individual constituents who call the office with a problem or policies or programs who help groups of people like immigrant families, challenged youth, veterans, or people without homes. I would like the opportunity to expand my capacity to help people from the 2 million people in Santa Clara County to the 40 million people in the State of California. You come from a civic background that has deep roots in San Jose. How would you rate your political legacy here in San Jose? I have lived in San Jose my entire life and have raised my family here. My first job was picking prunes and apricots side-by-side migrant farm workers in the orchards in East San Jose. I started walking precincts for my father, former Santa Clara County Supervisor and Assemblymember Dominic Cortese when I was 11 years old. In addition to my career in public service, I have been active in Rotary, my church, and supporting countless organizations such as Little League, YMCA, East Side Heroes, and others. This is my home, and I hope that my legacy will be that I did everything I could to make our community stronger, safer, and more equitable for all its members. How was your work in this City and Santa

Photo Credit: Courtesy of Dave Cortese Clara County prepared you for what a role in the Senate would entail? What do you feel you could bring to the State Senate based on your experience in politics in this region? With 27 years of experience in public service on a school board, city council and county board of supervisors, I have gained experience in public education, public safety, social services, healthcare, land use planning and much more. Beyond that, I have gained experience in bringing our community together to address some of our most seemingly intractable problems such as gun violence and homelessness. My diverse connections span racial, cultural, socio-economic, age, gender, and faith communities. My wide breadth of experience and my ability to build coalitions of support are what set me apart from my opponents. What are your main goals or issues to tackle if you were nominated to the State Senate? The main issues I’m looking forward to tackling in the State Senate are housing/homelessness, education, COVID-19 relief & recovery and climate change. Housing, homelessness, and climate change are some of the biggest issues in not only California but the entire country, how would you address these working in the State Senate? ● Housing ○ As a senator I would introduce legislation that focuses on incentives for housing production including tax credits and financing incentives. In 2016, I co-chaired the Measure A bond campaign which raised nearly a billion dollars to provide affordable housing for some of our most vulnerable residents in Santa Clara County. That money has been leveraged 3:1 against private, municipal and non-profit housing investment. We have already jumpstarted 22 affordable housing projects since the measure passed just three years ago. This approach should be replicated in all 58 counties across the state. In addition, the state has the power to issue tax credits and deferments for the development of property much like what is done in other areas of commerce such as agriculture. The combination of these types of financial incentives would have an extraordinary positive impact on housing production.

● Homelessness ○ Solutions to homelessness have been a priority while serving on the San Jose City Council and Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. When I chaired the Board four of my first nine years in office, I initiated the creation of a housing task force with representatives from business, labor, city and county offices and many experts on housing and homelessness. The panel included members of the homeless community who helped make decisions and generate ideas which led to Measure A being placed on the ballot. The task force also brought forward recommendations for additional short-term, interim housing options. We shouldn’t be waiting; people are dying and it’s not acceptable. I will fight for significant increases in funding in these areas as a state senator just as I have as a county supervisor. ● Climate change ○ Climate scientists are telling us that we have just 12 years before we do irreparable damage to our global environment. We need aggressive and immediate actions to turn this around, shifting our dependency on fossil fuels to renewable sources. We need to build our resilience to Climate Change through a decarbonization strategy. To do this, we must work with Community Choice Aggregations to 1) procure decarbonized energy supply and 2) ensure grid integration. I support full carbon restoration through viable solutions that will remove excess CO2 and bring back atmospheric concentration to healthy preindustrial revolution levels by 2050. This requires returning atmospheric CO2 to safe levels of less than 300 parts per million (ppm). COVID-19 statistics have shown that Latinos are more adversely affected by the coronavirus. With a California population of an estimated 16-17 Million and as a Legislator who has represented many Latino constituents for years, what ideas will you take to the State Capital on how state funding resources can be used in helping protect Latino households from this deadly virus, which will likely be with us for the next few years ? The coronavirus outbreak laid bare the disproportionate number of people of color getting COVID-19, the lack of health care for them, and the limited access to devices and Internet con-

California’s immigrant population is the driving force of our state and a major reason our state has the world’s 5th-largest economy. Santa Clara County was the first governmental body in the nation to sue President Trump over his very first Executive Order, (Sanctuary Cities takeaways), a legal action I took responsibility for as President of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. When we won the nationwide injunction protecting all cities and counties in America; it felt very gratifying. Later, I debated Tucker Carlson on national TV (Fox), emphasizing the narrative that the constitution is on our side of the issue... Our community is much safer and healthier when, regardless of immigration status, the health needs of all our residents are addressed, when our children are educated, and when people feel free to speak with law enforcement about criminal activity in their neighborhoods. As I’ve done throughout my career, I will continue to work for the rights of immigrants at the state level. How would you motivate people who may not feel as part of the government process to go out and vote and get involved in their community? Voting is our voice, especially locally. I can completely understand why people may feel like their voice or vote doesn’t count, but change starts from the bottom up, not the top down. Attending local town or city council meetings or Board of Supervisors meetings and making public comments can have a big effect. As an elected official, it’s incredibly important for me to hear from constituents and engage in two-way communication. Every voice matters when it comes to building a more equitable, fair and just community. And finally, from now until November 3rd, why should people check your name on the ballot? My family has deep roots in this county. My grandfather immigrated here in 1910 to work in the orchards -- he gave us opportunity and hope. He taught me to value the same kind of hard work starting as a boy in the fields. Over the decades, as a small business owner and then a school board member, city councilmember, and county supervisor, I've seen many things change. Some change has been good, but some has been challenging. I'm running for State Senate because I know we can do better. Santa Clara County is a special place -- it's our home. It’s been a privilege to have had the support of our community as an elected official for the past 27 years, and I hope, once again, I’ll be entrusted with that privilege.

os Angeles - Anya Taylor-Joy must have something special to make half of Hollywood sigh for her. She triumphed with "The Witch" (2015) and "Split" (2016), will be "Furiosa" in the prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015), and now debuts on Netflix with "The Queen's Gambit", but on the road to stardom also faced necessary challenges.

"I think (to be an actress) I sacrificed having a normal adolescence. But, in essence, I do not regret any of that: this was the life path that I was destined to have," she assured EFE. With a very peculiar family tree (she has Spanish and English blood from her mother and Scottish and Argentine from her father), Taylor-Joy brings us "The Queen's Gambit" which is now streaming on Netflix. The limited series is about a young woman who becomes a chess prodigy in the 1960s. Accompanied by Marielle Heller, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Harry Melling, the Latina shines in this wonderful screenplay by Scott Frank (creator of "Godless" and scriptwriter of "Logan", both from 2017) that combines a classic tone and a fine setting, with reflections on mental health, feminism, family trauma and addictions. I didn't know much about chess before doing "The Queen's Gambit." What do you think about chess after this series? I had always been vaguely fascinated with chess in the sense that it seemed seductive to me, but I feel very fortunate to have been invited to enter this magical and secret world. And I have had amazing teachers. Bruce Pandolfini (famous player and coach who was portrayed in the 1993 film "Searching for Bobby Fischer") is like a chess god and is genuinely the kindest and most understanding person. The email he sent me after watching the series is something I will keep forever. He is simply a beautiful soul.

ally. But it's fascinating because, as a performer, I really enjoyed conveying her story through her looks and the way she interacts with other people: This is Beth after she likes a guy for the first time, this is Beth after seeing an Audrey Hepburn tape for the first time ... it was wonderful growing up with her. Beth is also the only woman in a man's world. How does this series talk about feminism and discrimination against women in sport? What's beautiful about Beth is that she is so far removed from society that she doesn't really understand why people talk about her gender instead of her skills as a player. Having the opportunity to play this person at that specific time felt very liberating and I really enjoyed it. We soon see that Beth does not accept defeats very well ... Oh no. She doesn't like to lose too much (smiles). And you? How did you learn to accept disappointments in your career?

When we meet Beth, your character, she is involved in traumas and problems, but she finds something in chess.

I don't know why my brain works like this, but I've been very lucky that when I learn lessons, I tend to really learn them.

I think that Beth, unfortunately, life has taught her that people always end up disappointing you. She's used to being dumped; she's learned that she can't really trust other people.

The first time I was rejected, at my first audition, I cried a lot, I was sobbing, I was very upset. But at the end of that it was like, “I won't react like that anymore.”

I think that a big part of the seduction of chess is that, if you learn its rules, you can understand how someone is going to react and have moves for it. She responds well to having rules, knowing what to do, and she finds a sense of security in that.

To survive in this world, I had to understand that if you are destined to play a role, you will, and it will happen. And if you don't get the role it's because it wasn't for you: you wish them the best and you just disconnect and don't beat yourself up with it.

Then her fascination grows, but she begins to feel uncomfortable when human beings do not react like chess pieces. I think that's where she gets into trouble ...

In a gambit, a player sacrifices a piece to have a better position on the board. What have you sacrificed to become the actress you are now?

She seems very confident playing chess, but she is not so confident off the board. How do you learn to survive in a real world without the rules of chess?

Mmm ... I think I sacrificed having a normal adolescence, a normal youth. But, in essence, I do not regret any of that: this was the life path I was destined to take. I was never very good at “normal”.

Beth is forced to grow very quickly, perhaps not necessarily at the rate she would have if she had not started playing chess profession-

I am very grateful to have a path that fits with my sensibility.

Y he tenido maestros increíbles.

¿Y usted?

A

Victoria Infante

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- With only five days to go, the rush is on to get ballots in, and voting-rights groups have a few tips on making your vote count. A few weeks ago, the state mailed ballots to all registered voters.

Jonathan Mehta Stein, executive director for California Common Cause, said there's still time to mail it back.

"In California, a ballot can get to an elections office up to 17 days after Election Day and still be counted," Stein explained. "So just because you're close to Election Day, doesn't mean you have to abandon USPS as an option. You just have to make sure that your ballot is postmarked by Election Day."

You also can turn in the ballot at an official dropbox. Find the locations on the website for your county election board and for the Secretary of State. And, of course, you can vote in person, at one of the many early-vote centers open this weekend. On Election Day itself, you can drop off your absentee ballot or vote in person, even if you left your vote-by-mail ballot at home. Also, a new law allows you to register and vote on Election Day at any polling place. However, Stein noted it could take a while before we know the

"California takes days and weeks to count votes," Stein observed. "And that is a feature, not a bug. That is a sign that elections officials are doing everything they can to count every eligible vote. It is not a sign of fraud or malfeasance."

The biggest mistake people make is forgetting to sign the outside of the envelope. If there is a problem with your ballot, you'll get a letter and can then fix it at the elections office.

In addition, you can sign up for ballot tracking at Wheresmyballot.sos.ca.gov, and get a text message, should any issues arise.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.
