a Raza Historical Society of Silicon Valley was organized as an IRS Section 501(c)(3) non-profit by Fernando Zazueta, esq., Ramon J. Martinez, Ph.D., and Joseph Karl Soltero with purpose of collection of family artifacts, records, and personal diaries which establish the Hispanic-Latino historical presence in Silicon Valley today.
This house is the home of the La Raza Historical Society of Santa Clara Valley, which now gives the local Hispanic-Latino community a place to go to view historical artifacts from 2:00 to 4:00 PM each Sunday when Ramon J. Martinez and his colleagues are there to be the staff which explains their displays (and guards their archives).
From 1941 to 1981 publisher Humberto Garcia (who had a printing business) supported and published El Excentrico. This publication documents the historical events plus identifies those community members who were involved in those days of yore.
Recently, Elena Robles said to me: “Our Hispanic-Latino historical presence in Santa Clara Valley does not exist because no one in our community has researched it, documented it nor written about it from our own perspective. What exists in various history books was written by White historians who left us out. But then, we have left ourselves out of the records used by historians, reporters, and journalists when writing about this community. Hispanic-Latinos have been here for at least 200 years or more. Our kids do not learn our historical heritage because schools no longer teach civics and history.”
Just recently, all the photographs taken during 1941 to 1981 by Richard Diaz, the “Photographer of the Stats was received by La Raza Historical Society as a gift. There are many photos (all are 8.5 inches x 11 inches in size. Many photos have annotations which identify the event and those persons in the photo.

However, there are many photos who present individuals whose identity needs to be established. So, plan on visiting the HispanicLatino House located in San Jose History Park to see these photos. And if you can identify an individual in those photos do tell Ramon and his colleagues. These unidentified individuals undoubtedly are your abuelos (grandparents) or other relations and friends of your family. While I was there, two youthful Latinas visited and identified their tios (uncles) much to the delight of Ramon and his colleagues. It is
One photo really tells us today a lot about the inclusion and exclusion of our community. A photo which contained three individuals, the one in the center was Humberto Garcia I, the other two individuals in this photo were Ma. Bessie and Leonard McKay, a local print shop owner & operator who used that photo in his San Jose History Book. McKay identified the two AngloSaxons in that photo, but that Mexican was never included in that photo's caption. Consuelo Rodriguez commented, “I guess we Mexicans must be spirits which are invisible'”. We are not invisible at all. It is just that Hispanic-Latinos need to be more assertive about being identified and included when appropriate. If we do not insist on that much, then we become invisible individuals who do not get recognized for the efforts and contributions made in the past and now, in the present. After

amount to about 30% of the population of Santa Clara County. And many in our community can trace their family living here for several generations. Through hearsay, I am informed that Pancho Villa's wife was raised in San Jose, CA. Hispanic-Latinos have an extensive history in Santa Clara Valley along with those Native American tribes which resided here because of its mild weather, ample drinking water, and bountiful food (fowl, fish, and edible vegetation). Note that the Chiechi House was placed in the San Jose History Park because it represented a particular architectural style and could be built with local materials by local labor (Mexican and Native American skilled carpenters and stone masons). Joseph Karl Soltero wrote: The house was built for the John and Jane Campbell family in 1876 and purchased by Michael Chiechi in 1911. It was originally located in Willow Glen, on Northrup Ave and moved to History SJ park. The house was donated to History SJ by Grace Chiechi, the last surviving daughter in 1973 It has been managed by The La Raza Historical society since September 2018.' To summarize, La Raza Historical Society of Silicon Valley has become the highly visible Hispanic-Latino element. It is appropriate that this organization receive the Hispanic-Latino community support. Plan to make a contribution because it takes money to establish, sustain,
and maintain its displays of the documented contributions of the Hispanic-Latino community to the evolutionary development of Silicon Valley. Our Hispanic-Latino millennial youth need to know and understand that our community has been cultivating the soil with its knowledge of botany and agriculture, which still feeds this community. And a few HispanicLatinos, such as Raymundo Gil, developed cybernetic elements which opened up cloud computing. Unlike the WASPs, Hispanic-Latinos do not selfpromote their contributions to the evolutionary development of Silicon Valley. Next time you eat a meal, remember that potatoes came from Bolivia & Peru; maize (corn), tobacco, and yams came from the Americas; Cocaine from Columbia; and many drugs from the Amazon basin. The indigent curanderos (medicine men) and brujas (witches) had knowledge of local herbs and medicines from plants (e.g., cocaine). Learn enough to claim your rightful indigenous heritage. Fortunately, Humberto Garcia documented our community's efforts in his El Excentrico weekly publication. A complete archival edition is now located at the Chiechi House, SJ History Park, which is open to the public every Sunday, 1 to 4 PM. Plan to make a visit; then decide to make a supportive donation.

However, the current rule gives migratory agents the discretion to determine whether there are "convincing facts and circumstances" to decide the future of critically ill children and their families. For Democratic legislators and activists, an institutional guarantee is required that these children - totaling around 900 throughout the country - will not be deported.
Under that criterion, the House of Representatives oversight committee put under the magnifying glass one more of the Trump administration's controversial immigration policies: the deportation of critically ill children and their families. On August 7, 420 minors and their parents were notified by the Office of Immigration and Citizenship (USCIS) that they should leave the country or be deported, after the Trump administration decided to suspend the deferred exit process for all people, except immigrants in the armed forces or dreamers.

TAMALES, MOLE, BREAD AND DRINKS FILL THE DAY OF THE DEAD OFFERINGS IN MEXICO

érida, Mexico - Tamales, atole, mole, bread, fruits, sweets and drinks will make up many of the offerings that will be assembled by Mexicans in their homes to celebrate the feast of the Day of the Dead, November 1 and 2, to remember what their deceased loved ones feasted on and enjoyed in life. The varied Mexican cuisine on display has dishes for practically any occasion. In the state of Yucatan for example, where this past Sunday the Hanal Pixán (the Mayans version of Day of the Dead) festivities began, the stand out cuisine is the mucbipollo a three pound tamale which is cooked in an earthen oven and that is prepared with corn dough, and filled with chicken, pork meat and beans, all wrapped in banana leaves. The preparation of this ancient food is far from simple. You have to mold the dough, cook the “kool”, a broth dipped in a reddish pigment of achiote, and put all the ingredients into the dough. "A single person could not [make] the mucbipollos because it is a very laborious work," explained Silvia Paredes, a traditional cook of this dish, who participated in the festival held in Merida, the Yucatecan capital. The preparation of this special tamale is a ritual that lasts between four and five hours, because you also have to make a hole in the ground and cook it with wood. The mucbipollo, which has an ancestral history, is deposited in the offerings dedicated to the dead because it is believed they can enjoy this food when they return to the world of the living during the Day of the Dead. "It is a pre-Hispanic tradition of all the Maya. We have followed it from generation to generation," said Paredes, who said the term mucbipollo means "chicken buried in the ground." In addition to Yucatan, in the rest of Mexico, tradition dictates that the living "invite" the dead to return and for this they offer dishes, snacks and products that their loved ones enjoyed in life. From the typical calaveritas (small skulls) made of sugar, amaranth or chocolate, and the
traditional Mexican mole, ( a sauce made with chiles and spices), to the pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and various sweets in Mexico, the dead are indulged and entertained by relatives and friends. Many specialists in gastronomy in Mexico say that the things that cannot be missing in an offering are the traditional pumpkin, papaya, tejocote or sweet potato candy, and the pan de muerto. The sweets are of pre-Hispanic origin and it is common to find it in public markets and street markets, known as “tianguis”. The fruits are cooked in clay casseroles with a syrup that is made with brown sugar. In the case of bread, always round and of different sizes, it is made from a dough - which is left to ferment for more than 24 hours - based on egg, flour, butter, sugar and the unique touch that gives the zest of Orange. Other meals or dishes in Mexico on the Day of the Dead are traditional tamales, another food of indigenous Mesoamerican origin, which is usually prepared (much like the mucbipollos) with dough and is filled with meat, vegetables, sauces or fruits. These are usually accompanied with atole, a thick, corn and masa based hot beverage. In the states of Yucatán, Puebla, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Tabasco, State of Mexico and Chiapas, the Day of the Dead is an indigenous holiday which is designated by Unesco as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. As shown is the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the southern state of Oaxaca, where a type of offering called the Xandu’ is celebrated. In this, the dead are worshiped in two ways according to the taste of families, using the traditional altars or hanging a bow with banana or cane pennants adorned with flowers, fruits and breads and on the ground, a packed duffel bag is placed featuring all kinds of dishes, sweets and drinks. In addition to food, water, fruits and sweets used in the popular and ancestral Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead, it is common to see cigarettes and drinks such as tequila or mezcal and products or objects that those ancestors and loved ones imbibed on and generally enjoyed in life on display.

illennials are no strangers to watching numbers. Lives today are affected by a vast number of online and social media statistics -- likes, followers, scores and ratings. However, a new survey suggests that despite the time and attention this generation devotes to social media, they are more focused on the importance of a very different number: their credit scores. The new survey from Experian was conducted to see how those ages 23 to 38 rank their credit scores in importance relative to other numbers in their lives, including the number of followers they have on social media. While the survey found that online and social media numbers command millennials’ constant attention (19 percent say it’s an obsession), 49 percent of those surveyed believe a credit score impacts their life the most. Fifty-nine percent worry about their credit score and 52 percent would be disappointed if their score went down. The numbers reflect their concern. In the past five years, members of this generation have seen their average FICO Score grow by 21 points, increasing from 647 in the second quarter of 2014 to 668 in the same quarter of 2019, according to Experian data. This is the largest increase of any generation for the same time period and shows that millennials are working to establish and build their credit. Though concerns over some scores and their online presence are causing a touch of anxiety -51 percent of millennials surveyed feel bad when their numbers go down, they can easily access help to improve their credit scores, say experts. “Proud scorekeeping millennials often have low credit scores due to short credit histories, but there are steps they can take to better manage their scores,” says Rod Griffin, director of public education for Experian. Paying credit card bills on time and only making purchases that you know you can afford to pay back are effective steps you can take to gradually improve your credit score. But in the age of immediate results, you may want to check out tools with the potential to increase your credit more quickly – even immediately. For example, the free online resource Experian Boost allows consumers to add positive payment history from
utility and cell phone payments to their Experian credit reports, which can possibly improve one’s FICO Score in real-time. To learn more about credit and finance topics, visit experian.com/education. “Ultimately, a good credit score has a greater lifelong impact than social media likes and followers and putting emphasis on monitoring this score will set you up for a successful financial future,” says Griffin.

lectric vehicles (EVs) have been around about as long as cars themselves. In fact, primitive EVs were the dominant form of automotive transportation at the dawn of the auto age in Europe and the U.S. in the late 19th century. It wasn’t until the 1920s—when the U.S. road system was starting to be built out and cheap oil was available from newly tapped Texas oil fields—that internal combustion cars began to take over as the predominant vehicles across the United States. And we never looked back. Until recently, that is. Nowadays, EVs (Teslas, Leafs, Bolts, etc.) are indeed everywhere. Analysts estimate the EVs will be cheaper to buy than internal combustion cars as soon as 2022. Beyond that, it’s probably only a matter of two decades before EVs represent the majority of cars, light trucks and SUVs plying American roads. In 2018, EVs made up only about two percent of total U.S. new car sales, but that figure represents an astonishing 70 percent growth from the year prior. Moving forward, analysts expect around 13 percent annual compound growth in the EV sector for the foreseeable future. Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a research arm of the New York-based media company, expects sales of passenger EVs to overtake conventional internal combustionbased vehicles by 2038 (with EV sales topping 50 million a year as compared to conventional vehicle sales of 47 million by then). After that, EVs, with their lower ongoing fuel and maintenance costs, will continue taking over more and more of the market every year, calling the very future of the internal combustion engine passenger car into question. As technologies mature (allowing for better battery storage and extended driving range) and manufacturers ramp up production and prices come down accordingly, consumers will begin to look exclusively at EVs when shopping for new cars. Indeed, a recent survey of 2,000 adults living in either California or the Northeast Tristate Area (NY, NJ, CT) by consulting firm West Monroe Partners
It looks like we might have to wait some two decades for electric vehicles (EVs) to displace internal combustion cars as the kings of the American road. Photo Credit: Pexels found that the majority (59 percent) of respondents think their next vehicle will be an electric car. Not surprisingly, the survey found that Gen Zers (those born after 1996) are especially inclined toward EVs. That said, only 16 percent of respondents are driving around in EVs today, and concerns including short battery life and lack of charging stations (limiting the vehicles’ range), as well as high up-front purchase costs, are still holding many of us back from taking the allelectric plunge. But the writing is on the wall for gas guzzling passenger cars as we overcome these short-term hurdles. With about 15 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions emanating from the tailpipes of our internal combustion cars and light trucks, and gasoline becoming more and more expensive, the inevitable switchover to EVs—despite efforts by the Trump administration to reduce national fuel efficiency standards and bolster the ailing oil industry—is going to be a win-win for consumers and the planet. 2038 can’t come too soon! os vehículos eléctricos (VE) han existido casi tanto tiempo como los propios automóviles.
¡2038 no puede venir demasiado pronto! equipment, be it luggage, skis or snowboards. Many vehicles require a roof rack to transport these items ... and, according to the latest Hankook Gauge Index Survey, 40% of drivers have one. Of that, 52% of drivers leave the rack on at all times, as opposed to only keeping the roof rack on when transporting the items it carries. However, it's better for fuel efficiency to remove the rack unless there's a use for it, so save some money at the pump by only having the roof rack on your car when you need it.

The survey revealed that more than half (55%) of drivers will get behind the wheel for longer than 50 miles if they're heading to a music festival or concert. That goes to show that people are driven to travel for experiences and that for many, live music is a key ingredient for a fun vacation. Music can also help keep the attitude in the car upbeat, no matter what hour of the trip it is. For the ultimate road trip, drivers should curate a variety of playlists ahead of time for every mood and be sure to switch through them before sliding the car into drive - or hand it off to the passenger and let them play DJ. Don't: Let the gas light turn on Hankook found nearly half of drivers (49%) noted that filling up the gas tank is their number one checklist item before any long road trip. They're keen to save money at the same time. In fact, the Gauge revealed that most Americans (80%) will drive up to 10 miles out of their way to save money on a tank of gas ... and one in 10 (11%) will drive over 21 miles, which can get risky when that fuel light comes on. While every vehicle varies on how far it has left after the light goes on, it is wise to avoid it altogether and plan your rest stops accordingly. Speaking of rest stops, gas station convenience stores are called that for a reason - they do make for easy pit stops along the highway - but not everyone opts for convenience when deciding where to pull over. The price of gas is the number one influencing factor for drivers determining where to stop for gas on a long road trip (41%). The convenience factor comes in second as 36% say the most convenient location is the biggest determining factor on where they will fill up. Do: Check your tires

Hankook found that two-thirds of Americans consider checking their tires - either the pressure or the tread depth - as one of the most important to-dos before heading out on any long trip. Consider checking the tread depth a few days in advance, to allow for ample time to swing by the local tire shop for any necessary repairs, rotations or replacements. For those who do need to switch out the tires, it's important to consider the destination and driving habits before making the purchase. un diferente sonido.

PROGRESS ON INSURING CALIFORNIA CHILDREN GRINDS TO A HALT immigration status. "California had taken multiple proactive steps to expand coverage," she points out. "But we aren't making a dent in the number of uninsured kids in California, despite the fact that the economy has been strong." The report says the number of uninsured children increased by 400,000 nationwide between 2016 and 2018. The authors blame the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act as well as President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant policies, which have led many parents to drop their children from government programs.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. - For the second year in a row, the percentage of uninsured children has stagnated in the Golden State and is going up nationwide, according to a new report.
Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, says the loss of coverage hurt Latino children the most, but several other groups also saw decreases in coverage. "White children also had a significant loss of coverage," she points out. "Young children, under age six - and that's really troubling.
Researchers from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families found that 3.1% of children in California - about 300,000 children - have no health insurance.
"And we're also seeing families who are just right above the poverty lines, with incomes around $30,000 a year, those working poor families losing coverage."
Mayra Alvarez, executive director of The Children's Partnership in Los Angeles, says California should be doing better, considering the state increased premium subsidies and extended MediCal to everyone younger than 26 regardless of
Nationwide, the rate of uninsured children went from 4.7% in 2016 to 5.2% in 2018 - leaving a total of 4 million American children uninsured.
