A VIEW ON VETERAN'S DAY 2019 FROM A VETERAN

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

T

he United Veteran's Council of Santa Clara County has organized the parade and related festivities which will happen on Monday, November 11, 2019. The Reviewing Stand will be located facing Cesar Chavez Plaza. The parade will begin shortly after 10:30 AM. This parade is reputed to be one of the largest in America. SJ Mayor Sam Liccardo and SJ City Council members plus members of the Board of Supervisors, and various other leaders of this community will be at the viewing stand. Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces (and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I which was supposed to be “the war which ended all wars.” “Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.” “Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service.[3]

There is another military holiday, Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. remembrance that also occurs in May, which honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.” (Source: Wikipedia)

This Veteran's Day Holiday is meant to honor the military service of men and women who defended this nation with their service. In the Guadalupe and Toribio Morales family had 12 children of which 9 were boys, FIVE (5) of the nine brothers served in this nation's military. Brother Seville Morales was a master mechanic who kept General Patton's tanks well-tuned up during WWII. His supply battalion did its best to keep all tanks operating very well and fully supplied with the appropriate munitions. During a family get-together, Seville told all of us of the time he extended the available gasoline supply by adding French wine (18% alcohol) to stretch available gasoline supplies. Brother Andrew was with a 4.5-inch Mortar Battalion which landed in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno and Anzio. At Anzio, his was the only mortar unit that was not destroyed. Andrew had located his mortar unit 300 yards in front of the infantry picket line. Said Andrew, I knew that the krauts were very logical, they would never consider looking for my group where I placed it some 30 yards in front of the infantry. Andrew experienced over 240 days of front-line combat duty. I myself served 36 months from August 1946 to August 1949 as a medical-Surgical technician assigned to the 155th Station Hospital, Yokohama, Japan. My service included being an assistant during surgery, dealing with the surgical instrument table, and learned applied sterile surgical techniques. During my hospital assignments, I attended over 30 live birthing’s, as the

hospital provided hospital care to military families in the TokyoYokohama area.

Brother Guadalupe (Lupe) could never tell anyone what he did and where he was assigned. Some 40 years after being discharged, Lupe finally told me that he was a member of a cryptographic unit located at the Pentagon. That unit's job was to crack any and all secret communications codes used by the enemy. Brother Ralph served during Korea in the U.S. Air Force guarding military air landing strips and planes parked there. He endured the very severe blustery and very cold winter weather. Our family was very fortunate in that five brothers served and all five returned home physically intact. In those days, combat fatigue was a term used to describe what is now termed PTSD (post-traumatic stress syndrome). Brother Andrew had the worst case of PTSD. On reflection, this American nation has become the Global Military Police Force of this world since WW II. Right after WW II which was declared ended by the U.S. Congress on December 30, 1946, we have had military skirmishes in Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq, and so it continues today in the Mid-East. Many of the soldiers are under age 30. Many use their service to take advantage of education programs. That is how I was able to earn my B.Sc. Degree in Chemistry. Today, our community's youth, especially those from impoverished low-income families may still use military service to obtain a college education'. All five of the Morales family brothers did just that. It was Seville and Andrew who told me to pick an M.O.S. (military occupational specialty) which translates easily into the civilian job marketplace. Capitalistic corporations do not employ riflemen or those who know how

to fire mortars. Seville’s expertise as a mechanic enabled him to become a master mechanic for a MAC Truck dealership located in Lake County, Indiana.

The local clinics and hospitals would not recognize my army hospital service at all. So, I augmented by G.I. Education support by being a cafeteria busboy at Indian University. Today, I support the election of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren who propose that college education be free. I personally would feel better if, for every month of military service, one month of college or vocational training would be funded in full today. In general, for each month of community service, a month of college or vocational training would be earned. I prefer a hand-up type of development program over a hand-out type of program because nothing is free, somebody underwrites the program costs. Becoming a knowledge worker requires one's full investment and commitment. Half-hearted efforts invariably do not make it But let me be explicit; Today's youth need to learn some vocation very well. WELL ENOUGH TO BECOME A KNOWLEDGE WORKER! And it is best to become very well informed in more than one specialty field of know-how (knowledge). Be willing to try any field especially when you are still youthful. The objective is to become a life-long veteran of the learning process. I have never stopped learning something new each day. Things change; with maturity comes perspectives and insights not thought of during prior youthful innocent times. Veteran's Day is a time to tap the experience and know-how of a veteran. Knowledge needs to be shared by experienced mentors.

This American democracy will survive the assaults of self-serving leaders such as Mr. Trump who really is an enemy of “We, The People” who are individuals of color. His white supremacy ideology undermines the concept that each of us will receive equal access to opportunity and the protection by the Law of this land. The Trump Administration is all about taking full advantage while in office. The consequence is that We, The People end up enduring what wrongful ideology is proposed (as propaganda). We, The People must defend the ideals already embodied in the U.S. Constitution because they are being undermined and desecrated by actions of the current administration. We, The People must become fully committed to defending the U.S. Constitution as the Law of this land. Let us all commit to becoming “conflict veterans” who were successful repelling many of Trump's wrongful projections of American ideals and sense of what is fair to each and every one of us. Each of us is daily being provided the opportunity to push back the many Trumpisms being forced upon our communities. This is a domestic civil war wherein what is an American ideal is being denigrated by Trump and his colleagues. We must honor and pay our respects to prior veterans who successfully fought and defeated Nazism and Fascism. Both ideologies contained white supremacist features. We, The People must prevail against those White Supremacists who do not support democracy with their daily racist practices. Too many of our brothers and sisters served in the U.S. Military to protect and defend American democratic ideals. We cannot allow any domestic racist leader to prevail here at home. Decide to push back when appropriate.

ORTLAND, Ore. – Connections are becoming clearer between good oral health and treating high blood

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and one way folks can better manage the disease is by seeing a dentist. Dr. Lisa Bozzetti is the dental director at the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center in Hillsboro, originally founded to serve Oregon's migrant farm worker population in Yamhill and Washington counties. She says dental health and diabetes don't have a causal relationship, but they're on a twoway street – looking after one improves the other. "Patients who present with diabetes do tend to have a much higher incidence of periodontal disease,” she points out. “And there is some research to support that when you address the periodontal disease with cleanings – whether they be deep cleanings or just regular maintenance cleanings – that they do have an effect on stabilizing blood sugars." Bozzetti adds the incidence of gum disease is two to three times higher for patients with diabetes. Alexa Jett, oral health integration manager for CareOregon, describes the relationship between the two as a cycle, where high blood sugar increases inflammation throughout the body, causing more gum inflammation and insulin resistance. That's why her organization is working to integrate dental care, which is covered for patients on Oregon's Medicaid plan, into primary care settings.

"Oral health is part of routine diabetes care, just like it would be seeing your doctor for your blood sugar check or an eye exam, or a foot exam," Jett explains. Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center is one place where CareOregon is pioneering work to more deeply connect oral health and primary care.

ORTLAND, Ore.

Bozzetti says the center is in the process of integrating the two.

"We actually are embedding dental hygienists in some of our primary care clinics,” she states. “And one of our ideas was to embed a dental hygienist in a primary care clinic that had a large percentage of diabetic patients."

THE "JOKER STAIRS" THE NEW AND CONTROVERSIAL NEW YORK ATTRACTION ENGLISH

N

"Son unas escaleras sucias que he visto durante toda mi vida, no entiendo por qué ahora son tan importantes. Me da igual que vengan los turistas, pero es que aquí no hay nada", dice a Efe la neoyorquina Giselle frente a los escalones.

ew York - Not even the irritating drizzle of a New York autumn has been able to detract from the new tourist attraction of the Big Apple: the narrow and steep stairs of the Bronx in which the popular Batman villain Joker, portrayed most recently by Joaquin Phoenix in “Joker”, dances down in the final act.

Hundreds of tourists travel every day to the newly popularized neighborhood of northern Manhattan to pose on the steps, to the stupefaction of the residents of the area, who describe the location as "dirty" and "ugly". "They are dirty stairs that I have seen throughout my life, I do not understand why they are so important now. I don't care if tourists come, but there is nothing here," New Yorker Giselle tells EFE in front of the steps. But for two Swedish families, the Kolmodin and the Sellen, this description could not be more misguided: "We have stopped going to the Empire State to see this," they say about their week-long trip to New York. And it’s because of actor Joaquin Phoenix and his particular acting method in the now iconic scene which has been chiseled in the memory of these spectators that they are even visiting: a particular dance, not necessarily finely tuned choreography, while he descends the Bronx staircase dressed in a red jacket suit and clown makeup at the end of the 1970’s set film. That is why, for days, the staircase, located between two residential buildings in the modest Highbridge neighborhood and very close to the legendary Yankee Stadium, has received countless visitors who unholster their mobile phones to show that they have been in this new place of entertainment worship. Many of the neighbors are happy: "This is a positive thing. They only come to take pictures and record stairs," says Manuel Diaz, owner of a small neighborhood supermarket that borders the 92 steps. The owner says that the number of customers has increased: "The lottery has touched me a bit," he smiles, but admits that there are residents of the area who have shown their discontent over the presence of tourists. Some have received them with a shower of eggs, as shown by images that have circulated through social media in recent days, and others with a cascade of paint thrown from the tall residential buildings that flank the stairs. "Several times they have thrown objects from above: empty bottles, paint. Last Friday a girl came to visit and record a scene and white paint was thrown from above," says Díaz. This is one of the reasons why some of the residents of the area begin to demand that security be increased with a police presence, "as is done in any other place where tourists are concentrated." "Now that the Bronx is safer than a few years ago, there are more people who want to come, so authorities should keep in mind that this area of New York, and not just Manhattan, is also attractive to visitors," reasons Julissa Polanco, a resident in the neighborhood for two decades. And although Marina Juárez, who visited the

"It must be complicated. They will be trying to make their lives and here are the tourists fooling around and posing in a thousand ways on the stairs," she says. "I understand that it is annoying, but this is part of what is New York, where there is little room and everyone is tighter," adds Juárez.

“MISS SAIGON”: LOVE IN SACRIFICE Performer Garrick Macatangay gives us a look at the Vietnam War love story coming to San Jose

Arturo Hilario El Observador

And so, it's not always consistent, but, you know, I have been in productions. Now I'm so excited to be part of this production of course.

he Broadway production of “Miss Saigon” is an epic story that weaves together the themes of love, hope and desperation in the face of harsh odds during the Vietnam War.

Speaking of the current production, could you give me an idea, in your words, what "Miss Saigon" is about?

T

Well it's a story that takes place during the Vietnam War. Long story short, it's about a young Vietnamese woman or even girl, she was 17 years old at the start of the show, who meets an American G.I. and they fall in love. So, there's like a romance that builds quickly amidst all this war and tragedy that's going on. And, without giving too much away, the story is really about their love. But it's also about a lot of hope in times of trouble and tragedy and the stigma that you refute for love, and it could be for your partner, for your home or your country. I'm an immigrant child, so it's really, in my opinion, a story about that.

The basic synopsis revolves around a 17-year old Vietnamese girl named Kim who is forced to work at a bar in Saigon, where she eventually meets and falls in love with an American G.I. named Chris. As Saigon falls, they are separated and Kim spends years trying to find Chris, who unbeknownst to him, has a son with Kim. Originally the show premiered in 1989 and became a revival in 2014, which added an upgraded, show stopping stage design and soaring musical performances which highlight this story set during the fall of Saigon in the end times of the Vietnam War. One of the performers involved with this show is Fremont native Garrick Macatangay, who recently had some time to speak about the “Miss Saigon” and its ins and outs. Macatangay originally simply enjoyed dancing throughout his life as a hobby and intended to follow through with his college career of Biology and health until the dancing bug happened to come back into his life. This ultimately led him into the world of the stage. In the following interview he gives us an insight into his own journey and his perspective on “Miss Saigon”, which comes to the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts November 12 - 17, 2019. Hey Chris, to start off I wanted to know how you got started in the performing arts? What was that moment where you were you realized you wanted to do this as a career? Well it's kind of an interesting journey. I didn't know too much about pursuing the arts as a profession. I graduated from Berkeley with a bio major and education minor [but] I think all my life I was just dancing and performing and my family, we loved to sing, and we loved to dance, and we'd have like just family parties. So that was like our outlet for performing. And so, it was just always there even formed some dance groups with like my cousins and with some friends. So, it's just like part of my life.

Thank you. And for this show you are part of the ensemble. How is that like? Garrick Macatangay is part of the talented cast of “Miss Saigon”, performing at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts from November 12 - 17, 2019. Photo Credit: Broadway San Jose.

Well I did a couple of music courses in high school, but one of the first jobs I booked in L.A. was the musical called "Flower Drum Song", and it was playing somewhere in Orange County, at Fullerton Civic Light Opera. It was like my first job [and] my contract was non-equity, and so you receive a certain stipend, which almost just covered transportation initially. But it was basically my introduction to musical theater, [and] pursuing that professionally.

´ ESTAN ´ UN ACOMPAÑANTE Y TU INVITADOS AL PREESTRENO DE

´ EL MIERCOLES 13 DE NOVIEMBRE

But I just never thought about pursuing it professionally. And so then, like after I'd graduated college that I met a teacher who was teaching over in San Francisco and just to beat the commute or avoid the commute back to Fremont, I would take class in the city. So, then that's how she let me know about like the dance industry in Los Angeles. That was kind of like my first introduction to pursuing it professionally. I got an open call audition for a dance agency and was accepted, but at the time, I was still living in the Bay Area. So, I let them know, "Oh, I'm not from here but you know, obviously, I'd be so happy [to] join the agency." So, they're like, "Let us know when you're in L.A. and then we can get started." So about six months later, I moved to L.A. and then I started performing and touring like more of the commercial dance industry before getting into theater. So, it's not like an initial pursuit, it was just like one of those things that obviously I'd love to do but it was kind of like a roundabout way of getting there. When you first started off, then how did you get from professional dancing to working in theater productions?

So that was like my first real job in theater. Then after that, I booked another equity production, a national tour of a musical called "Bombay Dreams". Then I kind of pursued other musical theater productions. I wasn't familiar with the theater as well in L.A., it's more film and TV, and New York tends to be more theater. So again, it's lone of the things that just happened by chance and then it kind of followed that path [that] led to a lot of other opportunities.

Well it's fun, our company is great. I play several characters. I'm like a bar hustler and I'm a communist soldier. In Act II I play a "lover boy". So, it'll make sense if you are able to watch the production. So just various roles that help tell the story. And I'm part of an ensemble with amazing leads and amazing cast members who are just so strong and so talented. We really have a great time on stage. Do you have a specific moment from the show, either as an audience member or performer, that's your favorite? That's an interesting one. There's a couple I enjoy, "The American Dream", just because it's a dance number and I guess because I'm a dancer first I like the movement of things. But the guy that plays our Engineer [role], his name is Red Concepción. He's just phenomenal. All of the leads are phenomenal. But when I see him kind of carry the show and then at the end of the whole production, he is singing this whole number that kind of satirizes American culture. He is just a beast out there and it's amazing to watch. And so, he kind of opens that number and me and the other dancers are just waiting in the wings for our entrance and so like I'm able to watch just him do his thing. I'm always captivated by the performances of our cast members. That one in particular always just impresses me every night. Like, I just don't understand how they can do it every night just so powerfully and so amazing. I really love that scene. We have such a beautiful, amazing set. So, like, there's this scene that's always kind of like dropping for a lot of audience members. So, yeah, just like so many like so much like different textures to the style like acrobats. And so, they bring another element. We have like some soft moments. So, it's like a really, really kind of like a nice, diverse array of things. Oh, thank you. And onto my last question, for people that are not familiar with “Miss Saigon”, why would you recommend it? 100% I recommend them to watch this story. You know, it's a really beautiful and dramatic story told through music and dance. We have a superb an amazing cast, so strong, so talented. It's not your typical happy go lucky theater experience, but it's one that I think resonates for a lot of people who want to believe in love and hope amidst any kind of struggle.

EARTHTALK Q&A: FACTORY BUTTE CONTROVERSY Dear EarthTalk: What is the controversy over the Factory Butte landmark in Utah that has environmental groups filing lawsuits? -- M. Jensen, Taos, NM

Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk

T

he kerfuffle over Factory Butte, a 6,300-foot peak in Wayne County, Utah about 25 miles east of Capitol Reef National Park, stems from the on-again, off-again nature of federal rules about whether OffRoad Vehicles (ORVs) should be allowed to roam the 5,400 acres of wild desert surrounding it. Named by white settlers in the mid-19th century who thought its almost-architectural stature resembled a Provo, Utah woolen mill, Factory Butte is the latest flashpoint in a long timeline of disputes over what constitutes fair and proper use of federally managed desert wildlands in Utah and across the Southwest. Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bear’s Ears have been in the news lately given efforts by the Trump administration to ease restrictions on development, but Factory Butte has remained out of the spotlight since a George W. Bush-era ruling to close it to ORVs given potential risks to fragile desert soils and endangered species. But in May 2019, after some 12 years of protection, Trump’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) opened up the desert around Factory Butte to ORVs once again despite protests. “The agency’s decision ensures that one of Utah’s most recognizable landscapes will be defaced and damaged for years to come,” reports the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA), a Salt Lake City-based conservation group leading the fight to keep ORVs out of fragile desert wildlands. “Contrary to popular myth, these tracks don’t simply disappear after the next rain!” “Faced with public pressure and well-documented damage to the natural resource values of the areas around Factory Butte, the BLM disallowed ORV use in the area in 2006,” reports the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a leading environmental non-profit working with SUWA in suing the BLM over the move in hopes of getting it overturned. “BLM indicated in its environmental impact analysis that the area around Factory Butte should remain permanently closed to unrestricted cross-country travel.” Furthermore, environmental advocates are incensed as to how BLM re-opened the Factory Butte desert to ORVs—that is, without any new environmental reviews of feasibility, and in secrecy without soliciting or considering public comments. “By failing to update earlier environmental analyses, the BLM violat-

ed the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) when it failed to, at the very least, conduct a supplemental environmental analysis to account for the significant changes that have occurred in the Factory Butte area over the past decade, including the significant changes being wrought by the climate crisis,” says NRDC. This violation of NEPA is a central tenet of the lawsuit the two non-profits are jointly filing against the Trump administra-

tion for opening up the area to ORVs once again. “Unrestricted ORV use in this area is simply incompatible with its fragility. Those who hope to appreciate its awe-inspiring beauty would instead confront a vast web of tire ruts carved into the desert,” adds NRDC. “And the area faces a potential loss of its highly vulnerable desert species. We hope our lawsuit once again demonstrates these facts and brings renewed protection of this iconic western landscape.”
