Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR It’s been over 30 years since the U.S. Congress made a comprehensive assessment of the IRS taxation process.

President Trump (who never has allowed his personal IRS 1040 submittals get public scrutiny) and his Administration have not revealed any taxation policy objectives.

Comprehensive income taxation is now being addressed because Republican Congress members do not want to face their home congressional district constituents with nothing accomplished during its 2017 congressional session...EXCEPT A FAILURE TO GOVERN THIS AMERICAN NATION IN A MANNER THAT EQUITABLY DISTRIBUTES THE ABUNDANT WEALTH CREATED BY WE, THE PEOPLE. We, who are the 'GRUNTS' of this economic system reliably doing the heavy lifting, need to become informed to enable making decisions in our own best interest during the coming 2018 Midterm Election when our votes can be the 'silver bullets' which end up (s)electing new elected representatives. Next year, it would be advisable for us GRUNTS to not elect any candidate who has accepted campaign funds from any source which requires being beholden to the special interest source of that DARK MONEY. 'We, The People' must understand that we have the power to re-align and reorient our leaders especially when they have forgotten who is the boss... eventually it is 'We, The People'. When our democratic processes are crushed beneath the heels of aspiring oligarchs or ground up in the gears of industry and commerce.

'We, The People' must insist on traveling the high road using ideals already embedded

in the U.S. Constitution and its Amendments. To worldly powers whose days are numbered, 'We, The People' must defiantly cry out: “You may be BIG and BAD and SCARY, but 'WE THE PEOPLE' see through you clearly despite the many distractions created by your ‘false-facts’.

This commentary is not about what is being proposed by the Ryan-McConnell Tax Reform proposal presented to the House. This Ryan-McConnell proposal does nothing to help working folks to move towards a living wage. It does increase standard deductions for dependents; but it removes the Student Loan Paid Interest deduction along with all qualified medical care deductions and mortgage interest deductions; State Income and Sales tax deductions; etc. In addition, the attacks on the Obamacare (2010 Affordable Care Act) continue along with a proposed $1.8 Trillion reduction targeting Medicare and Medicaid along with the reductions in all programs dealing with human welfare needs.

What is succinctly presented here is WHAT IS NOT ON THE TABLE: Since Donald Trump, as a candidate, never allowed public scrutiny of his personal IRS 1040 submittals, how are we to determine that his presidency is not benefitting his personal income as well as improving the incomes of relatives (nepotism) and the income of Trump Enterprises, a business empire with holdings in many nations?

Let's consider three equity issues not 'on the table' during this effort to accomplish income tax reform. 1) Since the U.S. Supreme Court decreed that “Corporations are individuals who speak by spending their money, let's ensure that these “corporate individuals” benefit from these same tax reform proposals which will be applied to us GRUNTS. Why the fear of tax rates applied fairly upon all of Us GRUNTS. NO

DOUBLE STANDARDS IN TAXATION ARE ACCEPTABLE! 2) Let's also ensure that every Corporate Welfare item is fully reassessed objectively.

All businesses need to pay some amount of taxes on profits reported. Eliminate all tax loopholes which permit some corporations to pay no taxes at all. After all is said and done, these businesses exploit the natural resources located within this nation as well as use its infrastructural services to conduct its commerce. This nation's infrastructural elements are capital investments needing to be remodeled and upgraded with current revenues without additions to the existing national debt.

While many social and community welfare programs are being targeted for massive program support reductions, the one category not being scrutinized is CORPORATE WELFARE which has many forms. All corporate subsidies, tax credits, waivers, accelerated depreciation expense write-offs, etc. These all need to become subject to public scrutiny and objective assessment with no exceptions. A sunset schedule must be applied to each one which is continued.

An example: After the 1930's dust bowl storms, the concept of 'agricultural fallow land banks' was developed and administered by the Dept. of Agriculture.

Farmland owners were paid annual allowances to not till their farmland for two reasons: 1) create artificial food commodity shortages which would raise market pricing; and 2) ensure that participating farm landowner had an income when no crops were planted. Recently, this fallow land bank policy had unexpected consequences: A farmland owner of farmland being land-banked would not lease that land to a sharecropper because of being paid an annual allowance by the government. The sharecrop-

per wanted to plant rice on land suitable for growing that crop which, had it been planted and harvested, could have been exported to East Asian nations dealing with crop shortages causing famines due to rice crop failures.

Today, bulk rice shipped to North Korea would do more good than Trump's 'fire and fury' saber rattling.

This first Ryan-McConnell disclosure of their approach to comprehensive IRS Income tax reform is most significant. Why? Released tax reform proposals reveal corporate tax rates will be reduced from 35% down to 20%. There is nothing for those of us who are GRUNTS. For the ultra-wealthy and corporations, there are tax proposals which amount to legalized transfer of wealth (i.e., legal exchange of wealth without a quid pro quo, the essence of business).

Let's imagine reduction of business taxes down from 35% in steps of 5% for rates at 30%; 25% and 20%. Several American firms conducting multi-national global commerce have not brought their profits home, but rather, have them deposited in off-shore banks. Let's negotiate a quid pro quo process (you do this; we will allow or give that).

Since we have a CEO expert on the art of the deal, let's have this nation benefit from that expertise which allegedly made President Trump a non-validated billionaire (remember Trump has not allowed public scrutiny of his personal taxes).

Taxpayers have an obligation to make an annual report of their worldwide income, whether earned domestically or offshore using an IRS Form 8938. This 8938 Form is for an annual disclosure of specified foreign financial assets as required by the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) which was enacted by the 2010 U.S. Congress to prevent U.S. taxpayers from hiding their wealth overseas. FATCA has

significant tax consequences for those U.S. taxpayers who have previously undisclosed foreign bank accounts.

A second report for offshore bank accounts is the 'Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts'. The FBAR rules require taxpayers to disclose on this annual report whether they have a financial interest in, or signature or other authority over, foreign bank accounts, etc. The IRS may impose substantial civil and criminal penalties for failing to do so.

'We. The People' need to know what 'corporate individuals' are getting because the same taxation rules must apply to all Americans ensuring parity and equity.

Let's ensure that all individuals, both human and corporate, are applying the same rules with honesty and integrity. After all, this proposed COMPREHENSIVE IRS TAX REFORM IS ALL ABOUT OUR MONEY BECOMING THEIRS. Tax revenues are used to underwrite services provided by government agencies more effectively and efficiently than the private sector. Full transparency will ensure that we all are paying our fair share of taxes to enable our government agencies to be capable of delivering public services to constituents...both individuals and businesses.

This is only proper and fair.

'Small Government' desired by conservatives simply is unreasonable. Small government enable any scofflaw to do things without accountability and responsibility...an outcome of objective regulations, monitoring, and establishment of reasonable standards. The Trump Administration has already provided all Americans with a good view of what damage can be done by a very few. Let's accomplish what is possible with a new IRS Comprehensive Tax Reform 2017.

POLICYMAKERS CANNOT IGNORE THE OVERREPRESENTATION OF BLACK STUDENTS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION While national figures show overrepresentation by race for particular types of disabilities, these disparities can be far greater within school districts. Nationally, black children are twice as likely as all other racial and ethnic groups to be identified with emotional disturbance. In one state, however, over one-quarter of school districts had identified black students at rates at least 3 times higher than all other racial and ethnic groups combined.

This means that special education disparities are a community-level problem. Accordingly, IDEA requires states to identify “significant disproportionality” within school districts, which, in turn, must address the disparity.

In their recent study featured in Education Week, Morgan, Farkas, Hillemeier, and Maczuga got it wrong in arguing that more black children should be identified with educational disabilities and challenging federal policies meant to address overrepresentation by race in special education.

To be clear, black children ages 6 to 21 are already 40 percent more likelyto be identified with disabilities than their peers. While some communities may improperly deny special education services to children of color, we also believe that encouraging policymakers to overlook overrepresentation by race in special education impedes urgently needed action to address education inequality.

State education departments are working this fall to identify school districts with “significant disproportionality,” including racial and ethnic disparities in disability identification, as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its regulations. This is a critical moment for communities to reexamine how general and special education systems support children of color, with attention to early intervention, inequities in quality of education, and bias in identification procedures.

Given this study’s potential to disrupt such initiatives, we offer three clarifications regarding special education disparities and the work needed to address them.

IDEA is designed to address the overrepresentation of children of color in special education and, separately, the overidentification of education disabilities.

“Overrepresentation” here refers to circumstances in which a racial or ethnic group has greater representation in

special education than in the general population. This must be distinguished from “overidentification,” which involves any situation where a child is inappropriately identified with a disability and placed in special education. In their study, Morgan et al. interpret IDEA to address only racial and ethnic disparities caused by overidentification.

However, IDEA contains separate provisions to address disparities within school districts: one addresses “disproportionate representation” in special education resulting from the improper identification of disabilities, and a second addresses “significant disproportionality” regardless of whether identification procedures are appropriate. In other words, IDEA compels educators to appropriately identify each individual child with a disability, even if the result is disparity, but also mandates that school communities address the causes of racial and ethnic disparity within special education systems.

The second mandate is an acknowledgement of the sobering reality that too many children of color in special education do not receive the support they need and, in too many places, face barriers to education access.

Despite IDEA’s critical supports and legal safeguards, children of color with disabilities are disproportionately suspended and placed in segregated education settings. Further, the very data the authors analyzed—the National Assessment of Educational Progress—shows stubbornly low reading proficiency among children of color with disabilities. For example, the percentage of black children with disabilities at or above proficiency in reading rose from 1 percent to only 4 percent from 2002 to 2015.* Efforts to understand racial and ethnic disparities in special education must include an examination of school- and district-level influences.

The Morgan et al. study is not designed to inform this critical work. With its emphasis on individual student characteristics and use of statistical techniques to remove the influence of school-to-school differences from the analysis, the study cannot help federal lawmakers examine the utility of current law or assist school districts in working to help schools address disparity.

Our search for the causes of education disparities cannot devolve to a search for deficits among children of color.

To set the foundation for their study, the authors argue that children of color, who experience disproportionately higher rates of poverty, are at increased risk of disabilities because of their higher rates of exposure to various risk factors (e.g., low birthweight, lead exposure). This argument closely echoes a theory of compromised human development (TCHD) in seeking to translate environmental and systemic inequities experienced by children of color

into individual traits.

The following scenario illustrates why this is a problem: a low-income child of color struggles academically, in a poorly resourced district without preschool services, in a school with a high percentage of first- and secondyear teachers. (The scenario, sadly, is true for too many children of color across our nation.)

Is the child in need of intervention because of her income status, or is the school system in need?

After reading Morgan et al., or any work that espouses TCHD, anyone might point fingers at the child. We assert that, while the child in this scenario may or may not need assistance, the school system always will. Education policymakers, practitioners, and researchers have a dual responsibility to create environments in which a student’s individual needs are met, and to root out education inequity.

Each community is different; wherever children of color are underidentified as children with disabilities, steps should be taken to address the gap. However, education officials, educators, and parents deserve our support and applause as they carefully deliberate how to address the overrepresentation of children of color in special education. TOP THREE RISKIEST SCAMS FOR MILITARY FAMILIES AND VETERANS Unfortunately, aspects of a service member’s job often make them more vulnerable to scams. Perhaps most importantly, they have a guaranteed and steady income that scammers would love to have access to. They are also frequently deployed and move around often, which makes staying on top of red flags in bills and credit reports more difficult.

Additionally, new service members are often young and financially inexperienced, and these qualities may attract scammers.

Despite the stereotype of the elderly scam victim, millennials are actually the most likely to lose money to scams.

Service members and their families make many sacrifices for their country. However, there’s one sacrifice they don’t expect: being a target for scammers. As Veterans Day approaches, your Better Business Bureau (BBB) urges service members to keep an eye out for scams.

Individuals who self-identified as being active-duty military personnel, veterans or military spouses represented 8.5% of reports to BBB Scam Tracker in 2016. These individuals may be more susceptible when exposed to a scam, with 21.0% reporting losses, compared to 18.6% of non-military individuals. More striking is the median loss of $350, nearly 35% higher than the nonmilitary median loss of $260.

The BBB Risk Index (bbb.org/riskreport) measures risk by exposure (how likely you are to be targeted), susceptibility (your odds of losing money when exposed), and

monetary loss (if you do lose money, how big the losses will be).

According to the BBB Risk Index, these are the top three riskiest scams for military families and veterans.

1) Fake check/money order. In this con, you’ll be paid with a legitimate-looking check, only to have it bounce later on! Fake check scams frequently involve an overpayment, where the check amount is “accidentally” far more than the amount agreed to. Then, you’re asked to wire back the difference. Funds will be available soon after depositing a check, but forgeries can take weeks to be discovered.

2) Travel/vacations. Scammers attempt to trick vacationers out of their money by advertising too-good-to-be-true properties that either aren’t actually for rent, don’t exist, or don’t look like the pictures. Vacationers are told they need to act now to reserve the property and are lured in to paying a large deposit. Watch out for timeshare resale cons as well - don’t pay an upfront fee to a “reselling agent”. If you’re asked to wire money or pay with a prepaid card, watch out! 3) Tax Collection. Fraudsters call you pretending to be from the IRS and claim you

owe back taxes. They threaten arrest and use other scare tactics to trick you out of your money. In another version, scammers claim they are issuing tax refunds and will ask you for personal information under the guise of transferring a refund. This information can later be used for identity theft. Even if the call originates from DC, watch out – scammers can spoof caller IDs. If you’re worried that you do owe taxes, check at irs.gov. Never wire money, pay with a prepaid debit card, pay with gift cards, or pay anyone other than the US Treasury for taxes. Read more about the tax scam at bbb.org/taxscam.

Dele un nuevo giro a las cenas familiares favoritas incorporando ingredientes inesperados como las uvas de California. Cambie a una forma diferente de pastas, salsas o quesos para crear un nuevo plato. Deje de comer carne o hágase vegetariano una noche a la semana y materialice una nueva opción de cena. • 1/2 cucharada de cúrcuma • 1 cucharada de vinagre de vino blanco • 1/2 cucharadita de sal kosher • 1/2 cucharadita pimienta recién molida • 1 taza de uvas de California rojas o negras cortadas en mitades • 2 cucharadas pepitas tostadas, saladas y picadas

Elaboración Caliente el horno a 400F. Aplaste las batatas con un tenedor, colóquelas en una bandeja cubierta de papel de aluminio, y hornee por espacio de 1 hora o hasta que estén blandas.

También puede envolverlas en una toalla de papel húmeda y cocinarlas en el horno microondas durante 8 a 10 minutos o hasta que estén blandas.

Mientras se hacen las batatas, caliente el aceite en una sartén grande a fuego medioalto. Añada la cebolla, y cocine hasta que esté blanda y ligeramente dorada, durante unos 8 minutos. Vierta y revuelva la cúrcuma, vinagre, sal y pimienta y cocine durante otros 2 minutos. Vierta las uvas y revuelva, apagando el fuego.

Cuando las batatas estén listas, corte el cuarto superior de cada una, y ablande el interior con un tenedor. Añada la mezcla de cebollas, las pepitas, el cilantro y la menta, y espolvoréele el queso feta. Sirva.

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH Wonderful Pistachios Roughly two in three adults are considered to be overweight or obese. More than 29 million Americans are living with diabetes, while 86 million (that’s 1 out of 3 adults) have prediabetes. And every year about 735,000 American adults have a heart attack. These are all unfortunate stats! Luckily, you can do something about it.

There is no one diet that fits all, but there is something you can do to help keep your heart healthy and find your healthy weight while eating right with diabetes: Eat deliciously and eat nutritiously.

Wonderful Pistachios and a registered dietitian nutritionist developed simple tips on how you and your family can eat right and improve your health:

3. Boost whole grain intake: It can help increase fiber intake, which may help to fill you up. For example, try a whole grain that’s new to you, like farro, freekeh, quinoa, or sourghum. You can serve it just like rice, but it’ll have a pleasantly nuttier taste and texture.

4. Enjoy just-right amounts of “good” fat: The USDA recommends consuming less than 10% of daily calories from saturated (“bad”) fats. Try this: Choose nutrient-dense foods that also have good fats, like Wonderful Pistachios (nearly 90-percent of their fats are the good-for-you unsaturated type), extra-virgin olive oil, and avocado. For instance, sprinkle pistachios onto salads; drizzle steamed veggies with olive oil; spread mashed avocado into sandwiches.

SAN FRANCISCO -- California is losing a venerable independent news agency that leaves as its legacy a stronger, more diverse news landscape.

Close said the whole enterprise has been funded by donors and foundations, but they got overextended in recent years because they tended to keep projects going even after the funding ran out.

New America Media announced it will be closing its doors on November 30.

The nonprof it started in 1970 in San Francisco as Pacif ic News Service.

The name may not be familiar, but its articles became a staple for hundreds of newspapers around the country.

Executive Director Sandy Close said its writers broke many major stories about the war in Vietnam.

"It was among the f irst to provide eyewitness accounts on the impact of the air war and Agent Orange, fragging - when GIs turned on their

own leaders - and we had the last American reporter in Cambodia after the fall," Close said.

In the 1980s, the organization became New America Media and

launched a number of publications designed to amplify the voices of lowincome youth - some from behind bars - to combat the myth of the super-predator. Many of those are

"We've completed a lot of projects and we're now exploring opportunities to continue some key projects under other auspices."

Some of the projects that the organization hopes to continue concern issues such as immigrant rights, the 2020 census and the future of watersheds in California.

San Jose Based Nonprofit Helps Guide and Counsel Families of Homicide Victims

and community, his mother, Elsa Lopez, did more than grieve for her youngest son.

She began to ask questions about her son’s death. Among the ‘who’ and ‘why’, there was a personally pressing question, when would this dark time have closure.

“A lot of news and media started saying ‘It’s gang related’ and started painting a picture of my son, and for me that was not fair, it was not true.

My son was a father, he left behind a 3-year-old little boy, Anthony was a good son. I didn’t see him like the media was picturing him so I we fought for them to take it out of the media, they did, finding out from Homicide, that it wasn’t gang related.”

After a lot of lost leads and uncertain theories, Lopez pushed herself to follow up on Anthony’s case with all her efforts.

“I decided that, you might have silenced my son, but you did not silence me. And I became his voice,” says Lopez.

On February 13, 2013, 17-year old San Jose High School student Anthony Santa Cruz Sr. was on his way to a convenience store to grab some chips before eventually going to football practice.

Instead he ended up staggering home. When he arrived, he collapsed, succumbing to a knife injury sustained after being involved in an altercation with two unknown individuals. He never made it to practice.

It was San Jose’s 5th homicide of the year, and to this day his case remains unsolved.

She and her partner, Charles Najar, began the healing process through tireless pursuit of justice, and along the way, began aiding others in similar situations.

Again, my son was just walking down the street and his life ended, and the next day I’m calling the cemeteries, the morgue.”

In their 4th year, the organization provides grief counseling and overarching services that entail all forms of support to families who lose someone to gang and street violence.

Both Najar and Lopez have years of experience in the medical and counseling fields. Najar, now retired, has 22 years of mental health counseling work under his belt, mostly working with youth.

Lopez continues to work a day job, at Gardner Mental Health.

From contacting funeral homes, having family counseling sessions and workshops to arranging community vigils, the organization’s goal is to make the death of a family member as comforting as possible by handling the details and providing services which are necessary during the loss of a loved one. Equally important is equipping the network of people related to a victim of homicide with the knowledge to endure and understand the court systems and police investigation process.

The First Case

This led to the creation of their nonprofit, From the Streets to the Grave "A Mother's Voice" (FSTG), which takes the name from the outcome of many of the fatalities the organization deals with, street crimes and in general violence on the street.

Najar says the first-hand experience of uncertainty and grief is what helped spur the idea of helping other’s in this state. Anthony’s loss was in a way the first case for the creation of FSTG. Their own experience would ultimately guide them to go beyond their own grief.

Lopez says the name came from the fate of Anthony. “It’s all street violence that happens.

“One of the things that we experienced was that people were coming, relatives, friends, city Continued on Pg 10

workers, non-profits, the Chief of Police at the time, Chief Esquivel, we appreciated the visits.

They filled up this little place to try to support a grieving mom, they shared their condolences, but, they had to move on. We then were left with the questions, ‘what do we do? What happens now?’”

The big question for Lopez and Najar was, where they would go from this incident.

“It’s difficult to talk about. All of the sudden people are gone and that’s understandable. We realized what happens to the parents who lose a loved one in this type of situation, or any type of situation for that matter? DUI, an accident, so on.”

It was the uncertainly of Anthony’s case that propelled the couple to go out and find answers, and at the same time find that they were able to help others in more and more ways.

What Gets Done After four years, FSTG has created a process that works to deliver efficient and humanizing advocacy for families of victims.

The process usually works as follows: Lopez and Najar hear of a homicide through their networks, or social media. They follow up after 24 hours with the family of the victim to make first contact and begin the process which provides multiple services, depending on the family. The services also extend to the community, with vigils, and extended family and friend counseling.

Najar breaks down the initial point of contact for FSTG. “[We] get to the family to provide immediate grief and stress management services. We’re faith based but we are not locked into any particular religion, some families don’t necessarily want that. What we’re here to do is try to help [through] these first few hours, first few days. Listen more than anything, then connect them to services.”

Lopez’s first and foremost does her work for the community. “For me my mission was to help the families. I started noticing after my son’s passing, there were many families in our community being affected. It’s [in] our community that our children are at risk.”

Her own experience formed the foundation of what FSTG would become, both that knowledge before and after the death of Anthony. As a child, she and her sister had to translate for her mother, a native of Mexico, in many aspects of daily life.

“My mom [only] spoke Spanish so we would be her translators. So, I’ve learned and, developed that skill. A lot of mother’s that we’ve worked with don’t speak English. So, they wouldn’t know to call the coroners, they wouldn’t know to call the hospitals. This is new to them, during the shock that their child was killed.”

Trust is a large component of the programs that FSTG offers. “A lot of mothers, especially this last year with the immigration laws, they don’t want to call detectives. They don’t want to let officers in their house, they don’t want to let anyone in, so they call me,” says Lopez.

She will occasionally go with mothers to court and speak on their behalf, and sees the trust component as a crucial step in what direction to help a family.

EL OBSERVADOR | www.el-observador.com “For me it was important to go into their house, meet with the mom, meet with the father, let the father get to know me. It was important to build a trusting, caring relationship with the parents in order for them to allow me to go into their home.”

One of the most important aspects of the organization is to advocate and teach. Lopez has learned through her own efforts and experience to be the voice of the lost family member, and teaches this to any parent she interacts with.

“No one has the right to take anyone’s life but you as parents have the right to find out, where they’re at, what happened to them, who did this to them, and you have the right to go to court and speak up for your kids, it doesn’t matter what situation you’re in, those are your children.

That’s my most important thing, to teach them to stand up for their children to continue to be their voice.”

Processing A large part of their work with FSTG involves connecting with various members of the victims’ lives. These connections include chats, serious counseling and getting in touch with various services outside of FSTG. There is a ‘Homies Group’ within their organization that Najar says is specifically for the network of friends of victims, a lot of times they are gang members or connected with that lifestyle.

“We offer that service because we understand that the focus is on the parents, and the immediate family. So, then what happens to those 50 - 100 guys standing out there at the perimeter of the candle lite vigil? The ones drinking, smoking weed, honoring their friend and honoring the family, themselves grieving for their friend? Who works with them, where do they go? Where are they two weeks from now? We offer counseling in Grief and stress management and connect them with community agencies such as New Hope for Youth, Firehouse and other non-profit agencies that can direct them to positive programs."

Najar adds that in his experience, in days and weeks out when the memorial gatherings cease and people go onto their version of normalcy, that dark thoughts manifest and drug and alcohol use intensifies. This is also where the friends begin to get antsy about looking for culpability for a friends’ murder in the streets.

That is why we cannot ignore them, it’s time for our community to identify the fact that they are “hurting,” and anger that may lead to retaliation is only an action away.”

Lopez adds that during vigils there is a lot of people and a lot of emotions running. “Especially when it’s a well-known gang, you know there's going be hot heads out there so we will call New Hope for Youth Intervention, Firehouse and, the City of San Jose’s Outreach workers. They start connecting with them, right there and then at the candlelight. We need and use the nonprofits to come out who do outreach for these young men and women.”

Lopez says our agency focuses on grief counseling and stress management, not only for the short time, but, we provide these services for their journey through the path of Grief, we see their loved ones as people, not statistics or blurbs.

“We don’t think about the political stuff, what the news media says or the community says, we see them as our children, and that’s very important in our group. We sit as mother’s United, not as colors Divided.”

Najar adds that in the near future Anthony’s older sister will be starting a group for sister’s that will be allowing her to gather and talk with the sister’s and female cousins of victims.

“Losing her youngest brother, she feels like she’s at a point now where she could sit with girls and talk about the loss of their brother[s] or their cousins etc.”

Vigils Another aspect that’s been crucial to the networking and support systems in these cases is the community marches against violence and vigils. To date, since the first vigil for Anthony in 2013, FSTG has organized over 80 vigils per year. These are held all across San Jose and routinely get up into the 100’s of attendees.

There is a large yearly vigil which takes place at San Jose’s City Hall. Members of City government are present or invited, and it is the organization’s largest gathering of the year.

Their fourth vigil will be held this Saturday November 11th at City Hall.

Najar says that reaching out to gang members and those affiliated helps ease tensions after homicides. In some instances, they reach out to local nonprofits to provide additional support and services for those gathered at the vigils as well.

“We start involving the friends, to let them know they are part of the family. It makes them realize that the retaliation that’s in their head, it gives them a couple days to think about it. That’s what our purpose is. To take that retaliation, try to bury it out of their minds, and let them know that right now that’s not important, the most

Najar says, “We’ve had that experience. It’s difficult to measure but we see it on the street, we’re well connected to the street. We grew up in San Jose.”

Future of FSTG Lopez and Najar ask a very sobering question.

Had they been in a situation where Anthony’s murder was resolved quickly, would they have still had the idea to form FSTG? “We’ve gotten tips, random calls with bad information. For the first couple years we were thinking, ‘this might be it’ and it’s not happening,” says Najar.

He says that Lopez was the first one to come to the realization that if they had gotten the closure of Anthony’s murder being solved, they don’t know whether they would have been doing what they do now.

“What happens to all these families that we work with? God is holding this thing open, regardless of what happens. That’s what the goal is, to continue.”

Lopez, the original mother behind “A Mother’s Voice”, says she will not stop what she set out to do.

“I will continue to help families, I will continue to work in the community and be the voice for my son, be the voice for other mothers that don’t know what to do, don’t know how to speak up.

My goal is to motivate those mothers.”

The FSTG board members are all trained in grief counseling and stress management, and besides its Board, includes over 25 volunteers with background in Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol and gang experience. As Najar says, the groups give friends and acquaintances a safe and trusted space and “opportunity to get that stuff out, to process some of that grief.”

Lopez runs a group for parents in East Side San Jose every other Thursday called “Un día a la vez”, (One day at a time). The majority of the attendees are women, and Lopez says that it’s unfortunate that the death of a child, a loved one, brings them together, but, it is helpful, the group provides them an opportunity for them to come together, share their loss and to support

Q&A with JACOB HEIMER: Working on Beautiful - The Carole King Musical

Arturo Hilario El Observador Jacob Heimer is an actor and performer whose most recently been working on the tour of the upcoming Broadway San Jose production of Beautiful—The Carole King Musical.

With previous work in musicals such as Soul Doctor, and television shows like Chuck and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, he has had an eclectic background with acting and music.

In “Beautiful” the story of the legendary songwriter, author and performer Carole King is examined with all of her most captivating songs throughout. In addition, the story focuses on her contemporaries that worked in the same thriving New York songwriting scene that began in the late 50’s and continued beyond.

Heimer plays Barry Mann, who was intertwined in King’s life and also wrote some of the most captivating music along with his wife Cynthia Weil.

In the following Q&A, Heimer answers some of our questions on the upcoming production, coming to the Center for the Performing Arts November 14th- 19th.

How did you get started in the performing arts?

My parents noticed that I was really… how should I put this, I had a lot of energy when I was younger, and I really loved music so it really started as singing around the house a whole lot. Then I saw my first musical when I was 7 or 8 and I fell completely head over heels. It was a high school production of Jesus Christ Superstar and the guy that was playing Judas just rocked my world. I realized that was exactly what I wanted to do. I went to college for acting, not musical theater, I wasn’t sure if I’d do musicals

again but Music has always been with me in my life. I was in a band in high school and college that really stuck with me and kinda led me to this show. It’s kind of a nice, perfect combination of the rock world and beautiful theater.

In Beautiful - The Carole King Musical you play Barry Mann. Who is he, and how does he fit into this production?

He’s really the music half of the songwriting powerhouse that is Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. Barry worked at the Alden Building which is referred to in this show as 1650 Broadway, because it was the address. There were songs that were being turned everyday these songwriters are writing hundreds of songs, pumping out, trying to sell them to groups like The Shirelles and the Drifters. Carole worked at 1650 Broadway as a songwriter with her husband Gerry Goffin So, a lot of people, one of the thrills of this show is that in the first act we get to see these songs that we don’t associate with Carole King, songs like “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”, “Some Kind of Wonderful” and “Taking Care of My Baby”. She wrote “The LocoMotion” while she was at this building; “Change”, all these gorgeous songs that we don’t associate with tapestry. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil Worked in the same building so they became fast friends and fierce competitors. Carole has said they were the only people that really understood “our crazy life”, which was just trying to get a number one hit every day. So, they vacationed together because apparently if they vacationed together they wouldn’t have a chance to make a hit song while the other people were gone.

They became lifelong friends.

Anything in particular that you like about playing Barry Mann?

He’s amazing to play every night, he’s full of neurosis and frustrations and he’s a genius songwriter. He wrote so many

incredible songs with Cynthia and for all his neurosis and bitterness he also has a huge heart, he’s a very sweet guy, he really wants to marry this woman who he’s writing all these songs with. And I think they’re really the love story of the show. I got to meet the real Barry Mann two days ago, which was a real trip. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil Came to our show in Fresno and they were so sweet and I was so happy that he was such an openhearted guy in person because that’s what I got from the script but it was nice to see how much they still love each other now.

Very sweet together. I got to talk to him about how I covered one of his songs in high school with my horrible high school band, his music has been with me a long time. That’s a little off the topic I know. It was a real thrill seeing them in the flesh, but I’m happy to report we’re the same height, so I feel that bit of casting was really accurate.

Do you have a specific favorite moment of the production, whether it be form the show or the making of?

Honestly, one of my favorite things in the show is being offstage in the wings, and watching The Drifters perform. They kill me every night. One of the songs Carole King and Gerry Goffin Wrote was “Up on the Roof ”, numbers you don’t necessarily associate with them.

But to watch The Drifters every night nail that number right before I come in with Cynthia to put down the number because we don’t understand how their writing all these amazing songs, it’s just breathtaking watching these performers.

Me personally in the show, there’s a scene with Cynthia where I’m at my wits end and I’m very frustrated by a song she wants to put more work into that I think is kind of a horrible idea. And it ends up being “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” which of course turns out to be the most played song of the decade. So, I (As Barry) think it’s too boring, I sit down and make

fun of the song, and the next second you see The Righteous Brothers step out and nail the song. I love those moments. And honestly just getting to be onstage and share scenes with Sarah Goeke, who’s my Cynthia, it’s great every night.

Why should people go check out Beautiful—The Carole King Musical when it comes to San Jose?

There are a lot of themes that speak to me personally in Carole’s journey. I think overall, it’s a really nuanced view of everything one has to fight for in their life. Carole is fighting for love and a relationship and her music and her career and those things are relatable to any audience and on top of that you have one of the best songwriters of all time turning out these hits I think audiences sometimes forget they know and people go crazy for these songs I mean every night that “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” comes on the audience loses their minds.

Her songs speak to all generations. Not just the 70’s tapestry generation, we had a nine-year-old outside the theater the other week who specifically said, ‘yeah but when you and Carole sang “You’ve Got a Friend” I just started crying’. She said, ‘it really resonated with me’. You could tell that she was truly moved by the show. So, there are people of all generations who just really connect with Carole King’s music and the story of a woman who is in kind of a man’s business as well. One of the characters when we’re in the early 60’s is really surprised that she’s a composer because she’s a girl, and girls aren’t supposed to be composers. And she really took the world by storm with her music and her life story. I think that’s what this show does.

Is the iPhone X Worth $999 (64GB) or $1,149 (256GB)?

The Most Expensive iPhones Ever

Yes. You check your phone 120–150 times each day. You live your life on your phone. You never let anyone else hold your phone when you show them pictures you’ve taken. You sleep next to your phone. You take it to the rest room with you.

It is your primary means of communication and your connection to your community. If you can afford it, there is no reason not to have a 256GB iPhone X. If money is an object, you should consider a 256GB iPhone 8 Plus instead of a 64GB iPhone X. Storage matters. Some would argue that the Face ID feature of the iPhone X is a window into the world of Augmented Reality and enhanced game play, so there is a good reason save $150 and get the 64GB iPhone X. This is a personal choice, but consider your use case before making your purchase.

For all practical purposes, the iPhone X is $1,149 plus $199 for AppleCare, plus sales tax, plus the activation fee from your carrier, plus a case, so you’re looking at approximately $1,500 ready to use in your hand (before you purchase a voice/data plan from your preferred carrier).

What you’re about to read is going to sound like a love letter to Apple. So, just to level set, I stand by my assertion that “Imitation Is Not Innovation.” Apple’s high-end smartphone offerings are now feature-competitive with high-end Android devices. If you’re an iOS person, this review will make you joyful. If you’re an Android person, you are going to wonder what all the fuss is about. With that in mind, here are my thoughts about Apple’s new iPhone X. The Awesome You can one-hand the iPhone X. The screen is slightly bigger than the screen on the iPhone 7 Plus, but Apple took .28″ off the width of the X. This is a very big deal. One-handing a phone with a 5.8″ screen is awesome!

The Combo Button (Off, Siri, & Apple Pay). Press once to turn off your screen, press and hold to have a chat with Siri, double press to Apple Pay. You can say, “Hey Siri” at any time (no button needed), but if you want to press and hold the button, Siri will listen. How do you actually turn your iPhone X off? Press the combo button and either the volume up or volume down simultaneously. To hard reset your iPhone X, press the up volume button quickly, then the down volume button quickly, then hold the combo button until you see the Apple logo on the screen. These are all slightly annoying, but not big enough changes to care about.

Other Stuff

Face Recognition. It works. In fact, it works more reliably than the TouchID button on my iPhone 7 Plus, which was susceptible to residue from salty snacks and moisture from holding the accompanying adult frosty beverage containers. When it doesn’t work, you just tap your PIN or password (if you’re smart enough to set a long, evil, inconvenient one like you should) and your phone will open.

The Rear-Facing Camera. The quality of images made with an iPhone X are practically indistinguishable from that of images taken with an iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone X is slightly better in low light conditions due to the f/2.4 telephoto lens). Both lenses feature OIS (optical image stabilization), which reduces blurry images and makes for smoother-looking videos. iPhones take great pictures. The iPhone X is no exception.

Portrait Mode on the Front-Facing Camera. This is a nice to have, not a need to have. Single selfies are OK in portrait mode (depending on the length of your arms, you might not get your whole face in focus). Group

The Bottom Line The somewhat insane process of procuring this particular iPhone transformed me from an intense fanboy into an apathetic grownup. I had no preconceived notions or feelings as I unboxed my iPhone X, which was great, because in all honesty, the iPhone X delighted me at every turn. Well done, Apple.

It does change what you see – you will have to decide if you like it.

The Notch. Yep, it’s there. It’s big. It’s obtrusive.

It’s ugly. You will not notice it after a while.

Actually, you will always notice it; it just won’t bother you as much after a while.

No Headphone Jack. I’ve been pretty vocal about losing this feature. Now, with wireless charging, it is less of an issue. But I still carry four sets of headphones: AirPods, Lightning Headphones (from Apple) to use when the AirPods run out of power, Etymotic ER4 to listen to music, and Etymotic hf3 to use when I need to chat on my MacBook Pro. And I still have my Belkin lightning dongle so I can use a

No Home Button. It took me about an hour to get used to the new swipe patterns. The control panel is now a swipe down from the top right. You swipe down from the top left to see notifications. Swiping up opens the device and closes apps. You can swipe along the bottom of the device to switch between open apps. It’s new, it’s different, and it works – the new swipe patterns quickly become habits. I don’t miss the Home button, and you won’t either.

There are several ways to reduce the pain of this price. You can pay a low monthly fee by signing up for Apple’s “new phone every year” plan. I did this and was very, very sorry I did. According to Apple, all of the inconvenience and latenight grief I experienced (when I attempted to upgrade to the iPhone X) was because Apple could not connect to Citizen Bank to complete my “new phone every year” upgrade. Wireless Charging. Love it! Yes. Your Samsung wireless charger will work. Even the old ones.

The New

Animoji. I was sure that I was too old and too jaded to appreciate the new Animoji feature.

I’m not. It’s really fun and oddly useful. But more important, the technology will empower all kinds of real-time animation opportunities.

Clearly, this is just the beginning.

It’s hard to justify spending $999 on a 64GB iPhone X (unless you never take pictures or videos and don’t have a large collection that you like to keep with you). If you take pictures or videos or if you have a sizable existing photo collection, you will need the 256GB storage capacity.
