Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: • lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. • treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. • improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: • have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. • have a heart condition • have liver problems • have kidney problems • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” • are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: • other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem • water pills (also called “diuretics”) • potassium supplements • a salt substitute • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? • Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. • For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. • If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child. • For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. • DIOVAN can be taken with or without food.

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. • If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Lie down, if you feel faint or dizzy. Call your doctor right away. Kidney problems. Kidney problems may get worse in people that already have kidney disease. Some people will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. Call your doctor if you get swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, or unexplained weight gain. If you have heart failure, your doctor should check your kidney function before prescribing DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood pressure include: • headache • flu symptoms • stomach (abdominal pain) • dizziness • tiredness Side effects were generally mild and brief. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with heart failure include: • dizziness • joint and back pain • low blood pressure • tiredness • diarrhea • high blood potassium Common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people after a heart attack which caused them to stop taking the drug include: • low blood pressure • cough • high blood creatinine (decreased kidney function) • rash Tell your doctor if you get any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of DIOVAN. For a complete list, ask your doctor or pharmacist. How do I store DIOVAN? • Store DIOVAN tablets at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15°C-30°C). • Keep DIOVAN tablets in a closed container in a dry place. • Store bottles of DIOVAN suspension at room temperature less than 86°F (30°C) for up to 30 days, or refrigerate between 35°F-46°F (2°C-8°C) for up to 75 days. • Keep DIOVAN and all medicines out of the reach of children. General information about DIOVAN Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Do not use DIOVAN for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give DIOVAN to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them. This leaflet summarizes the most important information about DIOVAN. If you would like more information, talk with your doctor. You can ask your doctor or pharmacist for information about DIOVAN that is written for health professionals. For more information about DIOVAN, ask your pharmacist or doctor, visit www.DIOVAN.com on the Internet, or call 1-866-404-6361. What are the ingredients in DIOVAN? Active ingredient: valsartan Inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, iron oxides (yellow, black and/or red), magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol 8000, and titanium dioxide

Plan Ahead, Get to the Airport Early — And More Parking Now Available SAN JOSE, CA

As the busy holiday travel season approaches, Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) advises travelers to be prepared for takeoff: plan ahead, know the rules for security, and be at your terminal early. The airport reminds holiday travelers that they should get to their terminal at least 90 minutes before their flight so they have plenty of time to clear security, find their gate, and try one of the restaurants in the new airport. “Since last Thanksgiving we’ve made major changes to our parking facilities that might surprise our travelers who haven’t been here recently,” said Vicki Day, SJC director of customer services. “We’re opened several new parking lots that provide greater convenience for passengers, especially at our new Terminal B, and we closed our former long-term lot on the far side of the airport.” SJC expects activity to be about the same as last year’s Thanksgiving travel period. SJC flights are usually very full already, and most will have about 90 percent of their seats filled on the busiest days. Holi-

day travel now starts the Friday before Thanksgiving, November 18, and the busiest travel day is expected to be the Sunday following the holiday, November 27, as people return home. “Our busiest travel days of the year actually are in August when business and vacation travel are both at their peaks in Silicon Valley,” said Day. “The day before Thanksgiving is busy, of course, but the single-day peak just is not as big as it used to be since holiday travel now spreads over nearly two weeks.” She noted that during the holidays the airport sees many travelers who aren’t as familiar with the rules and procedures for air travel and security, which can slow things down. “It’s really important for travelers to check TSA’s website at www.tsa.gov to get current information about security requirements.” She said that holiday travelers often have questions about bringing food with them, and recommends they check TSA guidelines at www.tsa.gov/travelers/ a i r t r av e l/ h ol i d ay. s ht m .

• A new parking lot right next to Terminal B (Hourly Lot 5) provides very convenient short-term parking for the new terminal, also $2 per 30 minutes with a $30 daily maximum. • Two new daily lots also opened in June near Terminal B. Daily Lot 4 and Daily Lot 6 offer parking at flat rate of $22 per day. Shuttles provide direct service to the terminals from Daily Lot 6. • SJC’s free Cell Phone Waiting Area is conveniently located near the airport for drivers waiting to pick up passengers. • Accessible spaces for vehicles with a disability placard are inside the Terminal A garage and Terminal B garage. SJC AND TSA HOLIDAY TRAVEL TIPS: TSA’s “3-1-1 program” is a simple way to remember security rules now in effect at airports. By following these guidelines ahead of time, passengers can help make the security screening process much faster and easier for everyone. • 3-ounce or smaller containers of liquid or gel are permitted. More than three ounces must be packed in checked baggage. • 1-quart clear plastic, zip-top bags for holding 3-ounce or smaller containers. • 1 bag per traveler is allowed. Be sure to take the bag out of your carry-on and place it in a plastic tub for inspection by TSA. • Beverages and other items purchased by passengers after going through the security checkpoint are allowed on the plane. Beverages purchased prior to passing through security will not be permitted through the checkpoint. • Especially during the holiday season, passengers should bring only unwrapped gifts. Wrapped items may have to be unwrapped and inspected, causing delays and inconvenience. • Avoid wearing metal in clothing.

Retomando el Sueño Americano Patty Diaz, Directora Ejecutiva Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN)

With Poverty Comes Hunger and Malnutrition

Hector Curriel hcurrie1777@yahoo.com

Hilbert Morales, EL OBSERVADOR Hmorales@el-observador.com

The latest information supports the conclusion that many more now live in poverty. An income of $22,000 or less is the national standard for being impoverished. This is too low for Silicon Valley where estimates of $80,000 per year annual income *are required for a family of four to have a life style above the subsistence level. For the past 40 years, public policy has enabled a capitalistic system which has resulted in one percent of the population becoming very rich and influential. This is also the outcome of the focus on the creation and accumulaion of wealth by corporate executives who were raised during the post-World War II era of great prosperity and high employment levels. Today, U.S. Census data reveals that more people and their kids are living in poverty. With poverty comes hunger and malnutition because the hungry will consume high caloric food which is low in essential nutrients (vitamins and essential amino acids). There is a focus on obesity and the onset of type two diabetes. Latinos have a high incidence of these two. Note that public policy debates do not include programs which assist the unemployed to earn the basic needs of human existence. These needs are food, shelter, health care, access to medical care, access to education and training which permits employment that pays a living wage. It is not surprising that many people in America are now living in poverty. A study, supported by the Lucille Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, collected data from the past seven years. That informa-

tion reveals that one in four African-American kids live in poverty; one in three Latino kids live in poverty, while only one in ten White kids live in poverty. This is an outcome of income disparity in our current domestic economy. Who in the U.S. Congress is addressing this matter? Locally, school lunch programs are provided to kids who live in poverty. Congress needs to continue and expand the Food Stamp program administered by the Department of Agriculture. The U.S. Congress must adopt corrective policy measures which enable the middle class to again become the world’s economic consumer engine. The very rich and influential (top 1%) will not ,and do not ,let money ‘trickle down’ so public policy must become focused on the creationof jobs and improvement of the national infrastructure. It shall require a mixture of public and private engagement. Meanwhile, community organizations such as the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties and the Alameda County Community Food Bank, are doing much to provide food to local food kitchens and community centers. As we approach the holiday season of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Year’s Day 2011, these organizations are in need of donations of both money and canned foods. On Saturday, November 19th, members of the Kiwanis Club will seek food contributions. The Boy Scouts of America will collect canned foods. One supermaket chain (Safeway Stores) will have assembled a bag of non-perishable groceries which can be bought for $10 and immediately de-

posited in the food barrels provided by the food banks. Yesterday, Comunidad del Valle (Damian Trujillo, producer) devoted the entire program to the need to provide food for the hungry. Charity begin at home in one’s neighborhood. Today one in three Latino kids in Silicon Valley (San Jose) live in poverty and experience hunger. Pancho Guevarra, Executive Director, Sacred Heart Community Center, reminds all that the hungry form long lines all year around at that location. Unemployment exceeds the 9% national level in local Latino communities. One in six adults in Alameda County are getting food from their local food bank. In addition 21,000 kids are supplied food weekly. 8,000 volunteers are needed to help distribute the food. A $1 donation provides food for five meals. “The working poor are those most in need (one in seven) because their wages simply do not meet the needs of their family”,stated David Cox, St. Joseph’s Family Center, Gilroy, “Hunger is everywhere and exists all year around”. Sandra Cardenas said, “One in ten individuals in San Mateo and Santa Clara County receive food from Second Harvest Food Bank. Since the recession began, SHFB is servicng 50% more individuals”. To do your part, at the minimum donate at least $10 to either Second Harvest Food Bank (www.SHFB. org) or to Alameda County Community Food Bank (www.ACCFB.org) today. And both organizations need volunteers all year around, but especially now.

Tax deadline looms for charitable contributions

your charitable contributions:

Practical Money Matters

Confirm the organization’s tax-exempt status. Charitable auction purchases and donations. If you buy an item at a charitable auction, you’re only allowed to claim a deduction for the amount you pay that’s above its fair market value, so be sure to get documentation from the organization (e.g., a catalog showing a good-faith estimate).

Each year, roughly onethird of American households itemize deductions on their federal income taxes. For example, by December 31 you must pay for any uninsured medical expenses, state and local income and property taxes, and unreimbursed employee expenses you want to deduct from your 2011 taxes. You also need to decide how much to contribute to charitable organizations and either charge your credit. Here are a few issues to keep in mind when choosing how you’ll make – and report –

IRA distributions. For many, one of our tax code’s downfalls is that unless you itemize deductions you cannot reap tax advantages from your charitable contributions. Although the RMD contribution itself isn’t tax-deductible,

the amount won’t be included in your adjusted gross income (AGI), thereby providing several potential tax benefits: • A lower AGI could reduce taxes on your Social Security benefits. • It could make you eligible for tax breaks that are tied to AGI. • The contribution will lower your overall IRA balance, which in turn reduces the size of future mandatory distributions. Choose wisely. Before making a donation or volunteering your time, make sure the nonprofit organization is well-run.
