¿ESTADO DE NEGACIÓN O BOICOT?
STATE OF DENIAL OR BOYCOTT?
ESPAÑOL
ENGLISH
José López Zamorano La Red Hispana
E

T
he dictionary defines a psychological state of “denial” as a chemical mechanism of the body to adjust to disturbing situations: a form of psychological protection consisting of rejecting the truth and creating a mental pause to gradually assimilate it. The Mayo Clinic maintains that denial may be a good thing at first, but if it persists it has a "dark side”.
It has happened to all of us: when a very close loved one dies, immediately the spring of disbelief jumps. Gradually and progressively, we accept reality and look for mechanisms to reach a state of emotional stability Para más información visita www.lar- and mental peace. edhispana.com. During last week’s election on No-
vember 3, more than 76 million Americans voted for Democrat Joe Biden and more than 71 million people voted for President Donald Trump. They became the most voted presidential candidates in the country's history. The photograph of the electoral result is that of a country split in half. But what could initially be seen as a logical state of temporary denial of reality, is giving way to a volatile experiment in social unrest driven by baseless accusations or evidence of an alleged massive electoral fraud against the president, which would have subverted the popular will. It is possible that many of the president's supporters who have taken to the streets to protest believe in the veracity of videos that have gone viral of alleged electoral irregularities, although none have been proven. And it is legitimate for the losing party to resort to legal mechanisms to try to achieve recounts. But the Trump administration's decision to boycott the transition process through the refusal of the General Services Administration (GSA) to acknowledge the outcome of the elections, and the attitude of prominent Republican leaders and senators to question the outcome is equivalent to throwing gasoline on fire in a country with 330 million guns in circulation. Experts agree that the president's chances of success are virtually nonexistent since he would have to document specific cases of fraud, with first and last names, and accumulate a sufficient number of evidence that mathematically makes it possible to reverse the result in the disputed states of the country. It has been leaked to the media that some members of the presidential family have tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade the president to recognize reality. In contrast, Republicans began raising money for the legal battle and there is even talk of mass events, even though the COVID pandemic is in full swing. If the president or the Republicans have evidence of fraud, let them present it, as there are institutional mechanisms to vent it. But if they don't, they must assume their historical responsibility to recognize the popular will and safeguard the credibility of the democratic institutions of the United States, which have cost blood, sweat and tears. eggie, que ahora tiene 5 años, estuvo expuesto a las metanfetaminas en el útero y, después de que él nació, su madre biológica no pudo cuidarlo.

raditionally, the holiday season is a time to gather with family and friends to reminiscence and celebrate all that has happened throughout the year. But with an ongoing pandemic, many are left looking for new and unique ways to enjoy those time-honored traditions in a way that keeps everyone safe and healthy. So while things will likely look different than we are accustomed to, that doesn't mean you and your loved ones have to miss out on those most important and cherished traditions. Instead, consider trying these tips and tricks for safe, socially distant holiday fun. Host safely If you plan to host, there are a number of precautions you can take to keep guests safe. If possible, take your gatherings outside where you can increase physical distance and airflow. Choose outdoor activities, such as a bonfire or an active game. If you live in a colder climate, bring out the hats, coats and gloves - and try using a patio or porch heater to warm up. To limit travel, it is best to only invite people from your local area and limit the number of attendees. Provide information to guests about your local safety guidelines and take steps to prevent spread by providing masks and hand sanitizer. Get help from the experts With everything to consider this year, there is nothing better than receiving a helping hand in the kitchen - especially one that can be delivered right to your doorstep. For example, Boston Market has fully prepared, precooked holiday meal spreads, as well as a la carte sides and desserts that can be delivered to your home, preordered or picked up at any location nationwide. This helpful solution is also perfect for those taking extra precautions during this unusual holiday season. Go virtual Since you may not be able to see family and friends in-person, consider spending time with your loved ones from afar by using one of the many apps and programs that allow them to gather virtually. To keep the conversation flowing, prepare a list of fun topics, questions to ask or games to play while you are digitally celebrating the season together. Shop conveniently

y apreciadas.

VOTANTES DE COLOR RESTAURARON LA DEMOCRACIA EN AMÉRICA EN LAS ELECCIONES PRESIDENCIALES DE 2020 SUNITA SOHRABJI y PILAR MARRERO Ethnic Media Services
cano.

VOTERS OF COLOR RESTORED DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA IN 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
I
SUNITA SOHRABJI and PILAR MARRERO Ethnic Media Services
Brennan Center for Justice, said that a summer of protests for racial justice along with the disproportionate numbers from COVID-19 and record levels of unemployment in black communities, galvanized Black voter turnout in record numbers to remove Donald Trump from office.
n a country that is polarized and hurt by COVID-19 and a divisive leadership, a massive turnout of voters resulted in a close election where Democrat Joe Biden was pushed across the finish line by large majorities of voters of color.
“That explains why we're seeing Atlanta change Michigan, Philadelphia change Pennsylvania, Milwaukee change Wisconsin, and Detroit change Michigan,” he said. “That’s the enthusiasm and power of the Black vote.”
On Saturday, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were the projected winners of the 2020 elections, relegating Donald Trump to a one term, even as he refused to concede, and his lawyers tried legal maneuvers to argue electoral fraud. The Democratic presidential ticket reached that goal mainly because communities of color rejected the Trump Administration by large margins, explained experts who discussed the numbers, the history, and the motivations of electoral choices by communities of color in the United States in a briefing with ethnic media. Election eve surveys and exit polling confirmed that the majority of white voters voted for President Donald Trump, but that Asian Americans, Latinx, and Black voters turned out in record numbers to oust the incumbent, and to propel the first woman of color into the White House. According to the American Election Eve Poll by Latino Decisions, 56% of whites voted for Trump. A CNN exit poll found a similar number, 57% of whites voting for the President. But voters of color were a different story. According to the LD poll, 70% of Latinos, 89% of Blacks, 68% of Asians and 60% of American Indians voted for Biden. “I want to thank people of color and communities of color for saving our democracy,” said Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice at the Nov. 6 briefing organized by Ethnic Media Services. “Speaking as a white man, I come from a community that voted in the majority for Donald Trump. And if it were not for the African American, Latinx, and Asian American Pacific Islander Community, we would not be celebrating the victory that we're celebrating today,” said Sharry. It was a very close election, a cliffhanger that lasted from Tuesday November 3rd until Saturday morning, November 7th, when the official numbers made it clear that Biden-Harris had clinched the 270 electoral college votes needed. That polarization and the states in which the Biden advantage played out made it clear that lopsided democratic votes by people of color had an outsize role in the results. Stephen Nuño-Perez, a senior analyst at Latino Decisions, whose firm conducted an election eve poll of ethnic voters in key battleground states, said that “it's extremely difficult to win an election when you have mobilized minorities and Latinos in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Albuquerque”. Latinx voters were critical in flipping Arizona blue, said Nuno Perez of Latino Decisions, pointing to counties such as Maricopa, Pima, and Yuma, which all have significant Latino populations.

Latinx voters also made their presence known in Florida, handing Biden victories in MiamiDade, Tampa Bay, Orlando, and Broward County. In Miami, Cuban Americans threw their support behind Trump. Nuño warned about taking some outliers, like the Cuban vote in Miami-Dade and a couple of counties near the border in Texas where
Trump did much better with Latinos, to project that into the larger narrative. “Yes, Latinos are not a monolith, and yes, they are a monolith, they do respond to certain types of messaging and at the national level, seventy percent of Latinos voted for Biden. That’s a clear pattern”, he said. Theodore Johnson, a senior fellow at the

Overall Black voters were pragmatic, Johnson noted, pointing to South Carolina where they opted for Joe Biden over Kamala Harris or Corey Booker. “They picked the candidate they thought had the best chance of winning over white voters.” Johnson attributed the small increase in Black males voting for Trump to those Black Republicans who had opted to vote for the first Black president in 2008 and 2012 and who were now returning to the Republican Party. Asian Americans turned out in significant numbers for the 2020 election, said John C. Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice/ AAJC. Some 300,000 were first-time voters. Exit polls plus pre-election polls showed there was much more enthusiasm to vote, Yang noted. Between 65%-70% of AAPI voters supported Biden, with 30 percent voting for Trump, consistent with voting patterns in 2012 and 2016. While one-third of Asian Americans live in the 10 battleground states, and it would be easy to attribute the margin of victory in Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania to the AAPI vote. But Yang said it was the common values that brought Black, Latinx, Native and Asian Americans together that provided the margin of victory for Biden in those states. Yang recalled June 16, 2015, when Trump rode down an escalator at Trump Towers to announce his bid for the White House. “That was a defining moment for me and changed my career path. When he talked about illegal aliens being rapists and gangsters and criminals, he was talking about me because I was at one point an undocumented immigrant.” Mark Trahant, editor of Indian Country Today, discussed the impact of the Native American vote, indicating that a large number of Native Americans ran for elected office and that next year’s Congress will have a caucus with three Republicans and three Democrats. “This will give a bipartisan spin on Native issues,” he said. Native Americans were also elected to state Legislatures including Arizona and Kansas. Sharry, of America´s voice, said that the massive vote by minorities was also a rejection of Trump´s flagstone issue: xenophobia and racism. “An American public was forced by Donald Trump and his extremism to choose, and they chose to come down on the side of refugees and immigrants. This is a statement of what a multiracial majority in America said through this election. They said ‘we want to be a welcoming country. We don't like Trump’s separation of families.’”

Taking the 2021 Trailblazer AWD RS up high to the mountains and down low by the oceanside

Arturo Hilario El Observador
ecently I took the 2021 Trailblazer on two distinct adventures: a breezy, one hour drive up the Northern California coast to pick fall pumpkins alongside the oceanside community of Half Moon Bay, as well as a day trip out to the six thousand foot elevation of South Lake Tahoe amongst the giant Sierra Nevada Mountains. I must say, fun was had. In both situations, as well as the in-between moments of driving to the grocery store or taking a drive around the block to see a Halloween decorated neighborhood, the Trailblazer held its own, never did I think or feel the vehicle would lose power or struggle, it was always a smooth ride, and perfect for all conditions I threw at it. The specific model I was able to try out was the 2021 Trailblazer AWD RS, a 9-speed automatic transmission which leaves no room for sluggishness as it zips from city streets to climbing the scenic Sierra Mountains. The outside of the car is sharp and modern looking, and was fitted with the RS specials: such as a black accents and trim, 18” high gloss black aluminum wheels, as well as the best part of it in my opinion, the Oasis Blue color of the SUV (which can be had on non-RS models as well). A bright, but not too intense blue, it caught many eyes. Even in the picturesque peaks of a visitor center parking lot up in the mountains of Lake Tahoe, someone took their eyes off the vista for a second to admire and comment on the color and distinct lines of the car. Besides the color and accent trim of the RS, the base architecture of the Trailblazer is pretty fierce and fun for a compact SUV. In my opinion, as other SUV manufacturers create more boxy profiles, which can look good, I am very impressed with the direction of the Trailblazer’s profile. Even to me, the grill and front itself looks almost like another Chevy great, the Camaro. When your pint-sized SUV looks and feels like a speed machine, it’s a great thing to drive around. And although the footprint of the Trailblazer is small, measuring 173.50 in in length and 71.20 inches wide, it is “design magic” how the space is used. Although you won’t be carrying the touring kit for the Rolling Stones in the back, the ratio of space for passenger comfort and storage is particularly good.

Pumpkins and Peaks For my trip to Half Moon Bay California, the intent was to pick up some fresh fall pumpkins, for Halloween and general fall presentation outside my home - and for eating. Although I did not make any jack-o-lanterns this year my partner was able to make a delicious Butternut squash soup with some of our haul. And our “Halloween” pumpkin display outside still serves the purpose of bringing fall feelings to our sunny California neighborhood even as of writing. Half Moon Bay is a pretty simple ride and getting to the pumpkin patch we parked on a dirt parking spot which was no match for an all-wheeldrive Trailblazer. On the other hand, out by the Nevada Stateline when we traversed Lake Tahoe for the day, the 2021 Trailblazer performed superbly amongst the curves and constant changes in elevation and grade. Being up high in the mountains and watching out for passing lanes and traffic in general was made much easier with the Chevrolet features such as the lane change alerts and Infotainment 3 Plus, which kept our podcasts, music, and Google Maps handy. The dual-pane, panoramic sunroof gave fantastic views of the mountains around us and although it let in plenty of light, we were glad they have a nice tint to them. At the top of the road, high above Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay, we stopped at a parking lot for the Vikingsholm House State Park. Vikingsholm is a 38-room castle which sits at the bottom of the Sierra Mountains, at the lakeside of Emerald Bay. Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight finished construction on this Scandinavian inspired summer home in 1929 and enjoyed 15 summers of it throughout her life. While the Trailblazer enjoyed the sights of the parking lot, my partner and I zigzagged down the mountain to the castle and admired the views of the lake from up close. At the end of our excursion, we hiked back up to the peak, and enjoyed a relaxing journey back home in the Trailblazer. The heated seat warmers were our friends. The 2021 Trailblazer AWD RS was a great vehicle for running errands and going on Fall adventures. I think it would do just fine in any season.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Big box retailer Target has announced it will eliminate toxic chemicals from its receipts by the end of the year.
The company will stop using bisphenol S and bisphenol A, which are what give a shiny coating to thermal paper, used for many airline tickets and receipts from stores and ATMs.
Leah Segedie, a consumer watchdog with the website Mamavation.com, said the move will make millions of Americans safer.
"A lot of health impacts have been linked to bisphenol, like diabetes, weight gain, asthma, infertility, hyperactivity in children, and lots of cancers like breast cancer and prostate cancer," Segedie outlined. Mamavation gathered 51,000 signatures to petition Target to make the change. CVS, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Best Buy also have stopped using the chemicals, known as BPA and BPS, which are known to be endocrine disruptors. BPA has received a lot of negative attention in recent years, yet it is still very common, embedded in food and beverage cans, polycarbonate plastic, children's toys and garden hoses.

However, Segedie noted multiple new studies warn BPS is also hazardous, especially because the powder rubs off and can be easily absorbed through the skin.
ACRAMENTO, Calif.

"If you're a woman or if you're a child, your exposure level is actually higher because your skin is thinner than a man's," Segedie explained. "So men's exposure would be lower."

EATTLE -- The Trump campaign is challenging the results of the election in court, but so far is coming up short in proving allegations of voter fraud. President Donald Trump has lawsuits in a handful of states. In Pennsylvania, his campaign won a small victory in state court, ruling that officials must segregate a small number of mail-in ballots in case the secretary of state's extended deadline to receive them is found unconstitutional. But Lisa Manheim, an associate professor at the University of Washington School of Law, said she's seen no evidence of fraud that could change the election outcome.

"Voter fraud is a serious allegation, and it needs to be backed up with actual evidence," she said. "And it's that evidence that we are just not seeing any degree of, in an amount that could possibly overturn the result of the election."
Manheim noted that even if the extended deadline in Pennsylvania is ruled unconstitutional, the court wouldn't decide to overturn the outcome of the vote. Instead, it would adjust the count by the number of ballots identified in the lawsuit. President-elect Joe Biden's lead is more than 45,000 votes in the Keystone State.
This week, U.S. Attorney General William Barr authorized the Department of Justice to investigate voter-fraud claims. Manheim said Barr can do that under the law, as long as the DOJ investigates credible allegations.
"If DOJ goes further than that," she said, "the question becomes not only a legal one, but a question of what message the Department of Justice is sending."
In his role as president, Manheim said, Trump is mostly a bystander when it comes to legal challenges to election results.
"The law gives a sitting president essentially no legal role to play at all in the resolution of an election," she said. "As a candidate, a sitting president is able to file lawsuits -- but that's true of any candidate."

ARTFORD, Conn. -- Members of the National Task Force on Election Crises are speaking out about President Donald Trump's refusal to concede the election, saying it could have major repercussions if it continues.

The head of the General Services Administration is holding up almost $10 million for the Biden/Harris transition. Kate Shaw, a professor at the Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York, said she expects the voter fraud lawsuits launched by the Trump campaign to fail. "It is very difficult for me to see the GSA administrator defensively continuing to decline to make this determination," she said, "which does, I think, very much hinder the transition team." All federal agencies have briefing books and a transition team in place, but it is unclear if they will be allowed to cooperate with Biden staffers before the lawsuits are resolved. Vanita Gupta, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said she sees Trump's tweets as part of a disinformation campaign to sow distrust. "It can make it more difficult in the future to have buy-in on a common agenda," she said, "and in this moment of a global pandemic, that could actually risk American lives." Just before the election, Trump issued an executive order making it easier to fire civil servants without cause. The effects of methamphetamines on infants in the womb run a wide spectrum, from mild learning problems to significant impairment of brain function. These infants may be born premature, have low birth weight or suffer withdrawals causing jitteriness, irritability, and poor feeding. In addition, methaddicted mothers often have poor health and may use other substances such as marijuana, tobacco, alcohol, and cocaine. All of these can have negative effects on the infant’s development, as well as the mother’s ability to parent. ChrisAnna Mink is a pediatrician who practices in South Los Angeles. Researchers have shown that children who were meth-exposed in utero have difficulties with their brain’s executive function, which is the central command for organizing thoughts, planning, and learning. These children also have an increased risk of disruptive behaviors and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses, when compared to non-exposed peers. Some of these problems don’t become obvious until the cognitive and behavioral demands of a classroom. By spring, Reggie’s behavior was spiraling out of control and his preschool teachers couldn’t cope with him. The Huangs took him out of that school but didn’t know where to turn.
I recommended Children’s Institute Inc, as did some other friends with an adopted child who had also been exposed to drugs. I was familiar with the Institute’s therapeutic preschool called Day Treatment Intensive, DTI. Over the past 12 years, I have referred many children with behavioral difficulties due to drug exposure, abuse, neglect, and other psychological traumas. DTI “looks like a regular preschool,” said Nicole Fauscette, a licensed family therapist and supervisor of the program, but it offers real-time, individual therapy. First, DTI focuses on mental health, in a supportive and developmentally appropriate preschool setting. The school adds in academics as the children are ready.
mental stage, and current ability to function. “We help the kids get to a place where they can regulate their behaviors, increase their attention (and) their tolerance of frustration, and better navigate peer and adult relationships,” said Fauscette. The goal is to help the children achieve emotional stability, so they’ll be ready for a traditional learning environment. The staff and volunteers at DTI are chosen in part because of their temperament and ability to regulate their own emotions. These qualities are as valued as their education, though most have backgrounds in child development, psychology, or mental health.
The Children’s Institute building on Harbor-UCLA’s campus is surrounded by playgrounds. The inside is decorated in lively colors, and it’s neatly cluttered with toys and children. It looks like Crayola designed a home inviting visitors to come play.
“An adult in control of their emotions helps children who are not in control of theirs,” said Parra, who leads some of the staff trainings.
Children ages 2½ to 5 are eligible. Many have been expelled from regular preschool. DTI has space for 12 children and classrooms have, on average, one staff member for every two kids. Referrals come from child protective services, pediatricians, Head Start, internal mental health programs and community mental health agencies.
Reggie started at DTI in early May. The teachers observed that when he behaves like a dinosaur or other animal, it is because he is feeling anxious and frightened. In this way, they reason, he is attempting to defend himself against the danger he perceives. So, instead of punishing him for disobeying, Reggie’s teachers approach him calmly and help him address his anxiety.
DTI is one of less than a dozen such specialized programs in Los Angeles County, which is home to nearly 330,000 children younger than five. About 20 percent of those kids live in poverty and most have experienced adversity. The need far exceeds the slots available. “Therapeutic preschool uses the neuro-sequential model,” said Jesus Parra, the regional director for clinical services for Children’s Institute. This approach provides a framework for helping a child, keeping in mind his or her trauma history, develop-
The program aims, Parra said, for “the parents to fall in love with their child again.”
In the last few months, Reggie has made progress learning to use words—and not aggression—to express his emotions. The Huangs have already noticed a change. The teachers “were able to describe to us how Reggie interprets his world,” Daniel Huang said. “It’s helping—him and me.” Pediatrician ChrisAnna Mink writes the bimonthly Doctor’s Notes column on children’s health.

Kelly Dittmar, director of research at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, said November 2020 was a watershed year for African-Americans, Asian-Americans and other women who've long been excluded from many aspects of politics.

"We did have a record number of Native American women who ran for office this cycle for the U.S. House," Dittmar observed. "And we tracked that over the course of the election cycle, noting the importance of that in diversifying the pool of women who run."

owerful Hurricane Eta has left an enormous destruction in its path through Central America. The climatic phenomenon attacked the whole region with mighty force. The countries that have been most affected are Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The rest of the countries were also affected but with less intensity. In Guatemala a mudslide buried a village where over two hundred people died; the storm caused catastrophic floods. Honduras is the country that has been hit the hardest in this tragedy, it's calculated that two million people have been the victims of this disaster. One fourth of the country has been destroyed, buried under mud. Whole families have lost everything. Thousands of children and elderly people are sleeping under the elements and

Guatemala has started to recover slowly since only one region of the country suffered considerable damages, same as Belize and Nicaragua. In the case of Honduras, it is most concerning due to the Hurricane passing through the whole country, leaving death, destruction and disaster in its path. The crops were destroyed, many animals drowned and perished. Literally thousands of people don't know how they will feed their children. This is the time to show our generosity toward our sister republic of Honduras; if you can donate, please do so! We can make the difference; we can bring refuge and food to hundreds of thousands of people that have been left homeless and in the streets.

Against the magnitude of the disaster, the government of El Salvador has extended its brotherly hand and provided help to Honduras and Guatemala. President Nayib Bukele sent medicine, food and rescue groups to both countries. The help to both neighboring countries is calculated to be over two million dollars. A wonderful and welcomed gesture on the part of El Salvador. But the need in these moments is enormous, and the help and presence of the international community is urgently needed in Central America. The region has been devastated by this terrible Hurricane.
E

NC EXPERTS FORECAST CLIMATE OUTLOOK UNDER BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ENGLISH mitment to address climate change under Executive Order 80 further into effect. A 2019 Pew poll found across political party lines, 77% of Americans agree the nation should be developing alternative-energy sources such as wind and solar power, and decrease production of fossil fuels. Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at UNC Charlotte Brian Magi said policies at the state level will continue to protect air quality for North Carolina residents. "I think we were excited even before the election began about a lot of the prospects that North Carolina has going forward into the future," Magi said. "Part of that is leadership at the top levels of the state, providing a pathway for a clean energy future."

ALEIGH, N.C. -- Recovery from the pandemic will likely be the focus of the incoming administration, but environmental experts say actions to address climate change should be included in economic stimulus plans. Joel Porter, policy manager at Clean Air Carolina, said President-elect Joe Biden could boost cleanenergy growth and infrastructure development, as well as declare climate change a national emergency. He said North Carolina already is leading the way. "We've got a very strong clean-energy economy that's been growing over the course of the last ten years," Porter said. "And that's poised to only continue to grow if the right policies are in place," He said environmental groups across the state also are encouraging Gov. Roy Cooper to move his com-
Magi moderated a virtual panel this week looking at how climate change is impacting residents as part of State of the Climate 2020, a special 12-hour online giving day in support of clean air and climate solutions in North Carolina. Porter said he expects Biden to reverse numerous environmental rollbacks made under the Trump administration. He pointed out many industries support long-term solutions when it comes to environmental policy. "And we're talking about really big companies that do a lot for the economy. And at a certain point, companies will want regulatory certainty," he said. "Regardless of who's in power, they just want to know that they're playing by a fixed set of rules so that they don't have to keep changing the way that they operate every four years." He said the Biden administration could further develop the Obama-era Clean Power Plan to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants, as well as implement stricter mileage standards and caps on auto emissions for vehicle manufacturers. EXPERTOS DE CAROLINA DEL NORTE PRONOSTICAN LAS PERSPECTIVAS CLIMÁTICAS BAJO LA ADMINISTRACIÓN DE BIDEN ESPAÑOL

ALEIGH, N.C.
