INCLUSIVE FAMILILES BECOME EXTENDED FAMILIES resolution results in becoming aware that opportunity right here at home is limited unless one obtains the training and education needed.

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

N

ow that November 11th Veteran's Day has been celebrated appropriately, it is time to think about one's family becoming a more inclusive extended family. This is in preparation for Thanksgiving Day family reunion get-togethers as a first step (regardless of long-term disagreements). Plan to get your family together in preparation for not only Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2019, but also for Christmas, December 25th and New Year's Eve 2020. The main purpose of these family gettogethers is to foster the longterm relationships which have been the basis of your genealogy. At these family reunions much of importance will happen as an outcome of simply telling each other what you are doing and how it is going with you'. By sharing your interests and current involvements, you open the door to supportive and constructive commentary by those who are interested in fostering the best outcome possible. It is these intangible relationships and associations which result in those emotional commitments which are basic to not only family relationships but also to committed friendships. These result in a commitment to help out even if it is only with personal experiences of the past. It is during these conversations that one learns about the past challenges which were faced and resolved. Many times, the

And even then, it is in personal associations that one learns who can help open the door to the opportunity being sought. Those individuals who try to do things all by themselves invariably have many challenges which may be resolved by learning the needed information from someone else who is in that field. One common obstacle is thinking and believing that the challenge being faced is unique to you. That is never the case. In your family circle, share your thoughts and feelings so that by becoming slightly vulnerable others will be given the opening by you to share their experiences and know-how. Attending family reunions will give you the opportunity to share your current state of personal affairs with those most interested in your well-being. If you do not have brothers nor sisters, then develop strong friendships with someone who, over time and association, proves worthy of being trusted. As a teenager, I rebelled against the personal characterizations which were placed on me by others who were not family members, I wanted to go to college and did not realize that my father and mother did not have the background nor information which permitted them to guide my activities and interests. My mother used to say to me: “Solo si Dios quiere” (Only if God wishes (grants) it.”) My high

school advisor was an AngloSaxon teacher whose vision of my future was You are going to be a steel-mill worker just like your dad.” Somehow, in my mind I had decided that I was not going to be a steelworker'. It was a different Anglo-Saxon adult who told me, “Hilbert, you have a natural facility with numbers. You should develop that talent. Which I subsequently did by studying math all the way up to the calculus. Even though my high school had no science teaching laboratories, it was a natural sciences teacher who directed me towards books which informed me about the biological sciences. But it was my father who told me that while I was a teenager, “look around to the many different areas of work and knowledge because through that effort you may discover what it is you really like to do and understand. I am a 'steelworker” because that is the way I could make the most money which supports your mother and my children. It is those circumstances which influenced what choices I had.” My dad had the natural ability to analyze things. I saw him read many books as a child. And I know that I copied many of his habits of reading which led to learning and knowing something about many things. Looking back, there is one area where I could have benefitted by knowing more and receiving more guidance. That area was in dealing with money'. However, I learned much from friends whose families were better

off than mine. It was during discussions of future purchases that I learned to shop around for the best value rather than spend my limited funds on the fad of the moment'. It was at home; in the family that I learned to take care of essentials first. Most importantly, I learned to resist sales pitches. Most importantly, at home I learned to play games which were educational. However, I did play football as a sport where I learned teamwork and membership'. My swimming sport involvement taught me to develop my free style strokes for long distances. I was never fast and speedy, but I did have much endurance, so I ran the long races. Most importantly, I learned to lose with grace and accept the fact that others where more gifted than I was. However, I also learned that I had certain gifts which I developed. Basically, I experimented much as a teenager and learned my limits and developed what I was good at doing'. But through all these developments, I received support and assistance from parents and siblings though I did not realize that until I was a more mature individual. It was in the family that I was first exposed to being teased. And I miss all that now that I am a mature individual who has enjoyed my family, eight brothers and 3 sisters plus both parents who raised us in the Roman Catholic tradition of religion. It was in this family that I learned right from wrong; limits imposed by current lack of resource$ and

doing the most possible with what was available. Somehow, my family was always optimistic and content'. We all learned to share things fairly. It is these intangible human interrelationships which are missed if you do not attend your family gatherings or as an alternative, learn to be with friends who are good colleagues. These latter folks are the ones who become your extended family. Good mental health results from being in working relationships with parents, siblings, friends, and work colleagues. I also think that being a supportive and involved parishioner in a church group is a good thing. It is in the family that I learned to treat other with respect and honor their dignity and personhood. Today, many good friends and associates help me to sustain the quality of my life and its interests. With experience and maturity, I know that my perspectives have changed. “What is a good lifestyle?” It involves living with others who treat each other with mutual respect and dignity. And who know how to tell you how to enjoy and be glad, life is good! Especially when it involves your family members and good friends. Decide to use this holiday season 2019 to really enjoy the coming 2020 year! Begin with your family (and/or friends). The outcome will be inclusive extended family.

Com.

COLLEGE STAFF CELEBRATES HARD-WON VICTORY AT CA SUPREME COURT

ACRAMENTO, Calif. - A victory in court for workers at Antelope Valley Community College could have major statewide implications. Workers challenged a district decision to change their work schedules without having them vote on it as outlined in their contract. The Public Employment Relations Board ruled against the district and this week, the State Supreme Court let that decision stand. Jeff Freitas, president of the California Federation of Teachers, hopes this will encourage colleges to respect the rights of the people who serve the students, day in and day out. "It can set a precedent throughout the state about back pay and the abuse of wages and benefits for your secretaries, your janitors, your transportation specialists," says Freitas. The change meant that five years ago, people went from working five days a week to four longer days plus a half-day Friday - the same number of hours overall, but no overtime pay on the longer days. Now, Antelope Valley College will have to pay them an estimated $1.5 million in back overtime. Betsy Sanchez, a college spokesperson, argues that because the work schedules did not exceed 40 hours, no overtime was required. Pamela Ford - president of the Antelope

Valley College Federation of Classified Employees, Local 4683 - says the case affirms the value of workers standing together. "If there was no collective bargaining, then we would not have had any say in our work hours, and the president could have just done whatever he wanted," says Ford. "But collective bargaining is what gives employees rights within the workplace." Sanchez also notes many employees chose alternative schedules during the 90-day period before the change took effect.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS LOSE SLEEP TO BINGE-WATCH TV

new survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) found that 88% of U.S. adults admitted to losing sleep due to staying up late to watch multiple episodes of a TV show or streaming series - and this number jumps to 95% when looking at 18- to 44-year-olds. The same survey shows that Americans rank sleep as their second most important priority, following family. But actions speak louder than words, and it's not just TV shows that are taking precedence over sleep. Two-thirds of adults have lost sleep due to reading, 75% of men have lost sleep watching sporting events, and 72% of those aged 18-34 have put video games ahead of bedtime. "Choosing to binge on entertainment at night instead of sleeping has serious ramifications," said AASM President Dr. Kelly A. Carden. "Sleep is essential to health, wellbeing and safety, and chronic insufficient sleep can lead to an increased risk of health problems, mood disorders and motor vehicle accidents." Here are a few tips to help binge-watch responsibly: Set an episode limit. Commit to a specific number of episodes at the beginning of your watching session. To decide how many episodes you can fit in, determine your bedtime. The AASM recommends adults get seven or more hours of sleep for optimal health. Use this bedtime calculator to find out when you need to go to bed based on your wake time. Get out of the "auto-play" loop. Many streaming services will automatically launch episodes one after another to ensure you keep watching. This makes it easy to think "OK, one more episode," leading to late nights and sleepy mornings. Check settings to turn off the "auto-play" and ensure you are consciously choosing when to continue watching, and when to power off for bed. Make time on the weekend. If you enjoy streaming for longer periods, set aside part of your weekend to catch up on your favorite shows. Reserving Saturday or Sunday afternoon will provide more time for getting immersed in your shows, while still providing adequate time for sleep. Filter out blue light at night. If you stream content on a cell phone or tablet, make sure you have altered the device's blue light setting to minimize the alerting effects of screens at night. Bright light, such as that from a mobile device, sends signals to your brain that indicate you should be awake. This can make it difficult to fall asleep. Adjust your screen's brightness in the evening and avoid any electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Avoid using devices in bed. Streaming from the comfort of bed can also impede

Kelly A. Carden.

your ability to fall asleep.

EARTHTALK Q&A: WHAT DOES ECOCIDE MEAN? Dear EarthTalk: I’ve heard of suicide, homicide and genocide, but what is ecocide? -- Leslie P., Carrboro, NC

W

hile the concept of “ecocide” may be new to many of us, the practice of willfully destroying large areas of the natural environment has been around about as long as humans — although we got a lot better at it using the machinery we developed during the industrial revolution. Bioethicist Arthur Galston first started batting the term around in the 1970s to describe intentional widespread ecological destruction, especially as it pertained to ruining inhabited environments so people couldn’t live there anymore. One classic example of ecocide in modern history is American troops’ widespread application of the toxic herbicide Agent Orange across Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. It was used to clear some 12,000 square miles of tropical rainforest to enable flushing out the “enemy,” despite the toll on civilians and the environment. There are also plenty of presentday examples, including: mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia whereby miners blast through hundreds of feet of earth to access thin seams of coal; the “fracking” for oil and gas across wide swaths of Canada’s Alberta tar sands that has so far destroyed thousands of square miles of boreal forest and peat bogs while releasing hundreds of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere; the dumping of crude oil and toxic waste into Ecuador’s Amazon by oil companies too focused on profits to do the right thing about waste removal; and deep sea mining whereby the use of heavy machinery to ply veins of precious metals from the seabed is ruining marine ecosystems we still know little about. In recent years Scottish activist Polly Higgins championed the cause of getting the International Criminal Court (ICC), an independent judicial body created by the United Nations in 1998, to recognize ecocide as a “crime against peace” in the eyes of international law. Her work focused on getting the ICC to add ecocide as the fifth prosecutable “core international crime” (along with genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression). Sadly, Higgins succumbed to cancer at age 50 in April 2019, but her efforts to institutionalize ecocide as a major international crime lives on with other activists. “Destroying the planet is currently permitted,” says Jojo Mehta of the non-profit Stop Ecocide. “That is how ecosystems are being destroyed every day by dangerous industrial activity, exacerbating the climate emergency and destroying our forests, our soils, our rivers and the lands that we love.” Mehta points out that any of the 122 member states of the ICC can formally suggest adding ecocide as a major international crime. Stop Ecocide is working with small Pacific island nations which are already “feeling the sharp end of climate change” to urge ICC to finally adopt ecocide as another crime it prosecutes. “Serious harm to the Earth is preventable,” urges Mehta. “When government ministers can no longer issue permits for it, when insurers can no longer underwrite it, when investors can no longer back it, when CEOs

DOES 5G CAUSE CANCER?

D

Shelly Palmer

oes 5G cause cancer? No. No one knows what causes cancer. There are scientific theories, some with extraordinary supporting evidence, that clearly identify carcinogens (details below). But when I asked Dr. Michael La Quaglia, my granddaughter’s cancer surgeon, how a 2½-year-old gets pancreatoblastoma, he looked me straight in the eye and said, “If we knew, we could prevent it. All I can do is try to remove it. And, with God’s help, I will be successful.” Those words ring in my ears to this day. So, it is with a great deal of humility, personal experience and a strong belief in the scientific method that I submit to you a reasoned rebuttal to the meme that “5G causes cancer.” First and foremost, when researchers determine that something is a carcinogen (a substance, mixture, or exposure circumstance that promotes the formation of cancer), they provide clear, specific protocols to avoid it. So far, the only things related to 5G that have been classified as a carcinogen are cellphones. In 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) put cellphones on its list of “Class 2B carcinogens.” Other Class 2B carcinogens include pickles, aloe vera leaf extract, and being a firefighter. The warning about cellphones from the WHO is best paraphrased as “Don’t use your cellphone as a pillow,” or the crasser “Don’t sleep with your cellphone.” That said, cancer is serious business, and this topic is more than worthy of exploration. History of the Idea There have been people claiming that electromagnetic radiation causes cancer from the advent of 2G cellular networks. This is not new. In 2000 Florida’s Broward County Public School system asked a consultant, Bill Curry, to study the impact microwave radiation might have on school children. Mr. Curry concluded that the technology was “likely to be a serious health hazard.” As evidence, he referenced a graph labeled “Microwave Absorption in Brain Tissue (Grey Matter).” The graph has become a popular meme. (See photo.) His report, methodology, and conclusions have been called into question by so many scientists it would be impossible to name them all. However, Christopher Collins, PhD, professor of radiology at NYU, sums up the criticisms of Curry’s report concisely: Curry’s work failed to take “the shielding effect” of the human body into account. Dr. Kalil Abdullah, brain tumor neurosurgeon at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, agrees. There simply is no credible scientific evidence linking any cellular network (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G or anyG) to increases in brain tumors or other types of cancer. Carcinogens

There are many known carcinogens. Some carcinogens, such as inhaled asbestos, certain dioxins, and tobacco smoke, have nothing to do with radioactivity. Everyone knows the danger associated with inhaled asbestos, and anyone who has renovated an old structure knows what it costs (and the lengths to which one must go) to remove the cancer threat. Similarly, cigarettes (the main delivery vehicle for tobacco smoke) have carried a health risk warning from the Surgeon General of the United States for years. Some electromagnetic waves are carcinogenic, such as the ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma ray parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Should you avoid extreme exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation? Yes. There is known correlation between exposure to UV and certain types of skin cancer. This is why you are told to wear SPF 50 sunblock and avoid extreme exposure to direct sunlight. It is why there is a significant industry based on the thesis that humans need to be protected from UV radiation. But, unlike exposure to high levels of ionizing radioactive material (such as the materials used in nuclear reactors) which deterministically cause radiation sickness and may lead to death, when one analyzes the effects of exposure to low-levels of nonionizing radiation (which we will define more clearly in a moment), one finds that cancer is a stochastic effect. In other words, the radiation we are going to discuss in this article only has a probability of correlation with the occurrence of cancer, which is a major reason (among others, including small sample size, inconsistent exposure rates and controls, and short duration) peer-reviewed scientific studies have so far been inconclusive. Ionizing vs. Non-ionizing Radiation The United States Environmental Protection Agency provides the following definitions of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation: Non-ionizing radiation has enough energy to move atoms in a molecule around or cause them to vibrate, but not enough to remove electrons from atoms. Examples of this kind of radiation are radio waves, visible light and microwaves. Ionizing radiation has so much energy it can knock electrons out of atoms, a process known as ionization. Ionizing radiation can affect the atoms in living things, so it poses a health risk by damaging tissue and DNA in genes. Ionizing radiation comes from x-ray machines, cosmic particles from outer space and radioactive elements. Radioactive elements emit ionizing radiation as their atoms undergo radioactive decay. Radioactive decay is the emission of energy in the form of ionizing radiation. The ionizing radiation that is emitted can include alpha

particles, beta particles and/or gamma rays. Radioactive decay occurs in unbalanced atoms called radionuclides. Why Some Health Professionals and Scientists Believe 5G May Pose a Threat In 2016, U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) published “Report of Partial Findings from the National Toxicology Program Carcinogenesis Studies of Cell Phone Radiofrequency Radiation in Hsd: Sprague Dawley® SD rats (Whole Body Exposures).” It’s not exactly light reading, but basically the report details a study where mice and rats were exposed to extreme levels of radiation in the frequency range of cellphones. After two years of “whole body exposure,” there were an elevated number of mice afflicted with heart tumors in the exposed group. This study has been highly criticized. Google it. You won’t believe the number of articles about articles about articles. Then there’s the Ramazzini Institute Study of far-field radiation effects on rats. Like the NTP study above, there is no consensus regarding the results of the Ramazzini Institute Study. This is worth Googling too. Same issue. How These Studies Relate to the Rollout of 5G There are some people who believe (and argue) that because the density of 5G network towers will be greater than that of previous wireless networks and because 5G networks will include wavelengths of higher frequencies than those of previous wireless networks, the risks suggested by NTP, Ramazzini, and other studies will be elevated. A few very competent scientists and health professionals have been quite vocal on the subject. That said, most of the doctors, radiologists, and physicists I’ve spoken to about this roll their eyes and wonder why tanning salons are not banned worldwide. Remember UV? That’s the type of electromagnetic radiation that makes humans tan. And extreme levels of UV (like those you receive in a tanning bed) are much more powerful than anything a 5G tower or device could expose you to. My Advice There are many things in the world that you should care deeply about and pay close attention to. I won’t give you my list, but I will tell you that fear of cancer from 5G networks and devices is not on it. Safety Tip Don’t put yourself in an environment where you are exposed to high levels of any type of radiation. Where might that be? Such places are so rare, they are generally marked with big yellow signs that say, “Warning – Radiation Area.” That is not a warning I expect to ever see on a 5G device or network tower.

S

Open Space Authority

AN JOSÉ, Calif.

FOUR REASONS TO PURSUE CAREERS IN NURSING BPT

s time and technology reshape the workforce, most professionals are not in the position to choose one career or one track and stick with it until retirement. Nursing offers relevant, future-focused opportunities for people of all ages and levels of experience, from those re-entering the workforce or making a career change, to registered nurses pursuing further education. Below, you'll find for four key reasons students are pursuing licensure or a degree in nursing (RN to BSN and beyond), shared by Dr. Bonnie Stegman of Maryville University.

that shows no sign of slowing. That means you can expect competitive salaries and benefits. You'll even find that employers are getting creative in how they recruit and incentivize new hires. Mercy Children's Hospital in St. Louis created a seasonal staffing option, where nurses can opt to work a full-time schedule from September to June, then take time off in the summer months while retaining their benefits - and a guaranteed job in the fall. It's a valuable offering for anyone with childcare considerations. Other employers are providing financial incentives such as signing bonuses and tuition reimbursement. It's an environment ripe with opportunity.

1. Satisfaction

Make it happen

If you are interested in making a direct impact on the lives of individuals and communities, you should consider nursing. It's a rewarding career, according to nurses themselves - 83% say they are satisfied with their career choice. Many find the job fulfilling on a personal level as caring for others is a hallmark of the profession. Nurses provide a great deal of personal contact and engagement with patients, a traditional role that has only become more important in today's often-hectic healthcare environment. At the same time, nursing is an exciting and expanding field with new areas of focus and settings in which to practice. You have more options than ever before to pursue your individual interests and work at the cutting edge of healthcare.

Once you decide to pursue your licensure or earn a nursing degree, you have a variety of educational options. It all starts with finding a program that offers a realistic path for your existing schedule and responsibilities.

2. Wide-ranging opportunities Nursing often is associated with foundational healthcare settings such as primary care practices, hospitals or nursing homes. However, nursing offers many different paths to build and develop the specific track that's right for you. It

You also can specialize in public health, working in nonprofit organizations, community health centers or governmental agencies. Across specialties and settings, you also can build on your experience caring for patients and transition into other areas, serving as an administrator or an educator, for example. 3. Flexibility The array of options and opportunities available within nursing means that you can pick what best

fits your needs and preferences. For example, if family responsibilities mean you need to keep a 9-to-5, Monday-Friday schedule, some primary care or specialty practices can accommodate that. Through telehealth, you can provide patient care and education remotely, potentially creating opportunities across geographic areas and time zones. If you're open to moving around, you might find work as a traveling nurse to be an interesting - and usually well paid - choice. And, this flexibility means you can adapt and shift your focus as you move through different stages and phases of life. 4. Demand and compensation Nurses are in high demand nationwide, a trend

Online programs typically are designed for flexibility. The online nursing offerings at Maryville University, for example, include an RN to BSN program with multiple start dates throughout the year that can be completed 100% online to help students balance work and school commitments. You also can find flexible options in on-campus programs as well. In addition to programs for fulltime and transfer students, Maryville's on-campus nursing options include a part-time evening and weekend program designed for working adults. As our population ages, career options in healthcare are predicted to expand and grow. Nursing is worth considering - a resilient and wideranging career field with significant opportunities, now and in the future.
