THOUGHTS ABOUT THE IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY AND THANKSGIVING Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR
F
irst, let me express my hope that everyone everywhere has an opportunity to be with family and friends enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving Holiday meal. This nation, with its capitalistic commerce has yet to resolve the challenge of wealth distribution which permits everyone to have a good life enjoying safety and security. All those homeless individuals who endure life in the street are evidence that this nation has a wealth distribution issue. Fortunately, altruistic NGOCBO's step up to clothe, feed and house the impoverished and handicapped.
cannot conceive of a national governance practiced by an ultra-conservative Republican governance in which the White House had Donald J. Trump as President; and both the Senate and House of Representatives with a Republican Party majority. Our community witnessed a touch of conservative governance when the 2017-18 IRS tax reform legislation was enacted. Recall that corporate taxes dropped down from 35% to 21% while personal income taxers were raised about 8% more for those individuals whose annual income exceeded $250,000. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is to be commended for the Democratic Party having a majority vote in the House of Representatives. But do note that every progressive federal legislation is being stonewalled in the Senate where a Republican Party majority exists today.
Consider making a contribution to a local non-profit. Second Harvest Food Bank, Sacred Heart Community Center (San Jose, CA) and Salvation Army come to mind. These three NGO-CBO's have been accessible to and assisted many impoverished individuals and families.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi's email dated 11.19.2019 states:
I personally appreciate, and am hopeful, that the many Hispanic-Latino members of our community in Silicon Valley for the 'good governance practices' of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Dem-SF) whose detailed planning efforts prior to 2016 election resulted in the House of Representatives having a Democratic majority at this time.
But Trump is already scheming ways to discredit witnesses and spread LIES to turn public opinion in his favor.”
It is this Democratic Party House majority which re-established the check and balance system of American government. I
“Trump’s presidency is going down the drain… and he KNOWS it.” Democrats just held their FIRST public impeachment hearing and the testimony was DAMNING.
In addition, the several testimonies displayed on TV underscore the self-serving purpose of Trump and his allies. Their collective actions have diminished American international leadership through those actions which were all made with a 'quid pro quo' that favored this President's already immense wealthy status. American
government,
at
international, national, state and local levels, has invariably undertaken programs which are of service to our domestic commerce. Sustaining a high employment level is essential to the distribution of opportunity to earn enough wealth to have a good life. Under recent Republican dominated governance, the middle class has not experienced any increased income levels. In fact, the most recent data support the observation that the wealth gap has increased. What this nation needs most today is to tax the ultra-wealthy at a much higher level. When the working middle class does not earn enough to have funds to spend on discretionary items after paying for essentials, this American domestic economy does not work very well. We must keep in the forefront of our consciousness that our domestic consumer economy is what 'makes America great'. Our domestic economy attracts immigrants who seek work. In addition, other nations ship their goods here because our consumers have the funds in hand to make purchases. Too many forget that when all of us, especially the working class, have jobs which pay a living wage, this American economy is what makes America great and powerful enough to sustain the world's most highly technical and effective military forces. These military forces have played a role in sustaining ‘world peace’ since WW II. Trump's use of import-export tariffs was a very bad exercise of executive authority because those taxes will be paid by the American consumer. Those tariffs amount to an additional tax which decreases disposable income
levels. That’s why this Op-Ed was assembled to let Trump know his self-serving methods are apparent. Trump better get his bag packed -- his presidency may not survive the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry!! Impeachment is a U.S. Congressional process which is described in this nation's Constitution. Simply stated, the House of Representatives initiates the impeachment by first voting to perform an extensive inquiry whose objective is to establish the facts. Then the removal from office of any President is possible. Especially anyone who is not worthy of continuing as this nation's leader. Mr. Trump provided his own impeachment rationale when he delivered the U.S. Congressional approved foreign aid in a wrongful manner. That foreign aid cannot be leveraged to ask for a favor (i.e., a quid pro quo). Especially a favor which asked Ukraine officials to assemble information which would be used to enhance the proposed Trump re-election campaign effort. That should never happen nor be successful if attempted. This act brought to my mind the reality that Trump's election was assisted by Russia's Putin. In this instance, Trump is asking Ukraine's President to obtain information about former V.P. Joe Biden. That information could be used during the upcoming 2020 campaign. Has Mr. Trump ever competed for anything fairly and squarely? He will soon learn that there are consequences for the use of underhanded methods.
His leadership style does not unify Americans for any purpose. Trump had used government revenues to fund those detention facilities along the border. invariably, much of what he does results in some form of profiteering for his personal interests. That conforms well with his past actions. Recall that Trump never disclosed his personal IRS Tax statements when campaigning for election. To prevent that from happening again in the future, the standard voluntary practice of revealing your IRS Tax submittals must become a requirement for those who seek the U.S. Presidency. Recently more than 40 Border Residents visited the U.S. Congress to demand accountability and responsibility. The Border Network NGO/CBO is to be applauded for their efforts as noted by Susanne Flores (email dated 11.19.2019). Border residents will talk to Senators about the real needs of border communities. On Thanksgiving Day 2019, I ask each reader to be thankful for his/ her current status. Let's resolve to find a way to share what is possible with someone who needs a hand up. When 'We, The People' assist those we can, all involved become greater. It is this generosity which underlies the sharing of many essential items and resources. This demonstrates our people's belief and faith in Divine Providence which has favored Americans with much. Let us be very thankful for all that we have and enjoy and remember to share with those in need. ENJOY YOUR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY.

JAMIE LEE CURTIS: A FAMILY, A MURDER MYSTERY, AND IMMIGRATION The Iconic Actress gives insight on the new comedy, “Knives Out”
Jamie Lee Curtis stars in the new mystery comedy “Knives Out” by writer director Rian Johnson. Photo Credit: Lionsgate
T
Arturo Hilario El Observador
he murder mystery genre of films had long been on the sidelines in popular culture until recent efforts like the adaptation of British author Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” novel, and Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 “The Hateful Eight”, pushed that genre back into the mainstream. Now writer and director Rian Johnson, whose last film was the blockbuster “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, brings his own version of the complex murder mystery to the big screen. His film “Knives Out” tells the story of a wealthy family and the intricate relationships and underlying motives after the family patriarch dies under mysterious circumstances. This is where a detective comes into the scene, trying to figure out just “whodunnit”. The detective, played by Daniel Craig, is joined by an extensively great cast that includes Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield and Michael Shannon, who play an eccentric group of family members, staff and local law enforcement dealing with the fallout of the murder within the family’s mansion. Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays the eldest child of the family, took some time recently to speak to us about the resulting film efforts of all that talent, and how it was working on a mystery movie updated for the current political climate while retaining the twist and turns and intrigue of a classic murder mystery. So, Jaime Lee, to start off I want to get an idea of what is going on in the film "Knives Out"? Well the first goal of any good murder mystery is the joy of just that word, "mystery", not knowing where you're going. Not knowing where it's going, what the characters are doing, that is such a pleasure. And when you have someone like Rian Johnson who wrote and directs the movie you have somebody telling that murder mystery story in a really interesting way. And then you just fill it with really good actors. And so, it's a very satisfying - It's like a really satisfying creative meal. So, first of all that's what's going on. It's a really fun way to spend two hours. Then of course it's about a family. It's about a white privileged family. And there's a very big class differential
in the movie that is sort of second story if you will. The main character of the movie is a young caregiver named Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), who is taking care of this sort of older white patriarch, this murder mystery writer, and the movie is really about their relationship and the way the family deals with that relationship; and the way that the family treats Marta which is not really well. And I just think that it's a good social commentary. It's a comedy so it's done in humor. For instance, there's this running joke in the movie that none of the family members know where she's from. Everybody brings up a different Latin American country which is racist and horrible and xenophobic. And yet at the same time really funny the way that it's dealt. So, the film is also an ode to those Agatha Christie mystery novels and the "whodunnit" genre, except "Knives Out" seems to have a more modern and refreshing point of view with Rian Johnson at the helm. Can you talk a bit about what it was working with Rian Johnson and that ensemble cast? You know you're not in an Agatha Christie movie when the 23-year-old young actress is using a JUUL and vaping in the first second of the movie. Like in the first five minutes you know you're not in an Agatha Christie movie you're in a modern movie in the middle of a class and political divide that is pervasive in this country right now. We made the movie a year ago and the movie is coming out not even a year after finishing it. So, you know many many many many many of the issues in the movie, the red and blue state mentality, is played out in a delicious way, in a very funny way. And you know, again that's all Rian Johnson who wrote it and had the whole thing in his head and then you bring 15 actors into an old house near Boston and put a camera in there. It's pretty funny. Could you now tell me a little bit more about your character of Linda and what her motivations are, and how you got into that role? Well I am the oldest child of the patriarch played by a fantastic actor, Christopher Plummer. And you know, it's about white privilege and legacy and the abuse [regarding] trust fund children and people who are given their wealth and not have to
earn it. It's a think piece about that kind of wealth. And Linda, seemingly because nobody is what they seem in the movie, is the most selfsufficient and that whole idea of self-reliance is very strong in her. Like literally goes through her like a rod which you know is funny to see. She is a very successful real estate woman; she owns her own company while the other children seem to be much more tethered to the to the teat of the family money. Linda It looks like has much more self-reliance. I was curious was there any specific moment or filming day that was memorable to you that you can speak on? Well there's really only one day where the entire cast is present or the majority, in one sequence that involves a will reading because of course someone has died. It's a big sequence in the movie and it involves all these very funny actors and for being in an ensemble movie, that is a really delicious thing to be able to do. Would you say that in a way “Knives Out” is like a family movie as well as a whodunnit mystery? Big time. I mean it's not a movie for young children but it's definitely a movie for a family Thanksgiving. “Let's go, you know adult family members, let's go to the movies and work out all our problems on the screen”. Let's watch these people lose their minds and we don't have to. Which is really nice on Thanksgiving to do. Let these people go crazy and then you don't have to hate each other. On that note, what would you say is something that people can get out of "Knives Out" when they go see it? It's first and foremost a comedy. So, you will laugh. I think you will see, depending what side of the aisle you tread, you will be satisfied because there's plenty of representation on both red and blue. The sort of second layer of course is the family dynamic which is really fun to explore as we just said, letting other people work out their family drama while you sit back and eat popcorn and not have to do it yourself. And lastly, it's a movie about class divide and it couldn't be more topical, the immigrant experience is brought into this movie in a very clever and interesting way. “Knives Out” hits theaters on November 27, 2019.

UNIQUE PUBLIC-PRIVATE CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIP PRESERVES 937 ACRES IN COYOTE VALLEY $93.5M investment is first for natural infrastructure protection in California, providing water safeguards for citizens of San José and securing critical "last chance" wildlife corridor between mountain ranges

our first line of defense against climate change and this investment in Coyote Valley will be used as a model for climate-resilient infrastructure across the state,” said Ash Kalra, California State Assembly member for the 27th District. Kalra introduced Assembly Bill 948 in the California State Legislature to designate Coyote Valley as a landscape of statewide significance and create the Coyote Valley Conservation Program. “Along with the signing of Assembly Bill 948, this is a game-changing effort towards ending the decades-long urban sprawl mentality and speaks to the broad support for preserving and restoring precious resources throughout California.”
AN JOSÉ, Calif. - On November 6 the San José City Council approved the protection of 937 acres of open space in North Coyote Valley, through an innovative partnership between Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority (Authority) and the City of San José. This landmark conservation transaction will permanently protect wildlife habitat, natural floodplains and water quality and build resilience to climate change for residents in the 10th largest city in the nation. Recognizing the important benefits that nature provides our communities, this unique public-private partnership focuses efforts on the protection of Coyote Valley’s vital natural infrastructure to benefit nature and people. When voters overwhelmingly passed Measure T in November 2018, it created an unparalleled opportunity to conserve and restore the South Bay’s largest remaining freshwater wetland, Laguna Seca, and significant undeveloped natural floodplains upstream of San José. Few conservation deals have been done at this scale, and San José is one of the first cities in the nation to significantly invest infrastructure funding in nature-based solutions to address flood risk reduction, water supply and water quality benefits to its human and natural communities. Located at the southern extent of San José city limits, these undeveloped properties of North Coyote Valley will be purchased from willing sellers, Brandenburg Properties and the Sobrato Organization, at a cost of $93.5 million, making this one of the most expensive land conservation efforts in California. Details of the purchase and sale agreements were approved today in a 11 to 0 vote by the San José City Council. At $100,000 per acre, the cost of land in Coyote Valley may be considered high compared to typical land conservation deals, but the price reflects the fair market value of the properties today. Fundraising for this purchase is being led by POST, with additional funding expected to be provided by public agencies and private foundations, including the Authority. Approximately half of the total funds needed to complete the transaction will come from the City of San José’s Measure T, a $650 million infrastructure bond. “Our preservation of Coyote Valley for future generations makes good on our collective obligation of stewardship for our—and more importantly, their—planet,” said San José Mayor Sam Liccardo. “I’m proud of our work, together with the Authority, POST, land owners, and many community stakeholders over the last four years, to negotiate agreements, build a public campaign, pass Measure T at the ballot box, and ultimately deliver on our promise to the voters.” Liccardo further added, “While consistent with the vision of many of predecessors to protect our greenbelt for posterity, Coyote Valley’s conservation also enables San José to become more resilient to a host of climate-related perils, from wildfires to floods to drought. In the Authority’s 2017 scientific report, the Coyote Valley Landscape Linkage, North Coyote Valley is identified as the critical landscape linkage between the Santa Cruz and Diablo
This landmark conservation action marks a paradigm shift away from sprawl and instead embraces nature-based solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase carbon storage and support a more sustainable and climate-resilient region.

Mountain ranges, allowing wildlife to migrate and adapt to a changing climate. It is the key link to connecting $3.5 billion of open space investments made in the adjoining mountains ranges where there are over one million acres of core habitat. Additionally, strategic conservation in Coyote Valley provides significant new opportunities for outdoor recreation and supports local agriculture. For decades, North Coyote Valley has been under the threat of development and designated for
industrial land uses, including Silicon Valley tech campuses and most recently, large distribution warehouses. This acquisition removes the threat of development and unlocks opportunities to implement a vision to protect and restore Coyote Valley’s significant natural resources, creating a landscape of regional, state, and even national significance. "I commend Mayor Liccardo, the City Council, POST and the Open Space Authority for securing this landmark deal. Our natural environment is

“San José is taking an enlightened and fiscally astute approach to land use by putting jobs and housing where today’s workforce wants to be and discouraging the sprawl that both exacerbates traffic and pollution and interferes with the natural functions of the land itself. Optimizing land use in this way aligns perfectly with POST’s mission,” said Walter T. Moore, president of POST. “Clean air, fresh water, a healthy functional ecosystem and easy access to recreation are just some of the many benefits people and wildlife will experience as a result of a protected Coyote Valley.” Over the last forty years, environmental advocacy groups like Committee for Green Foothills and Greenbelt Alliance and the voices of many dedicated community members have made permanent protection of Coyote Valley a priority. Once the transactions are completed, the Authority will assume responsibility for managing, stewarding and opening these lands to the public. They will coordinate with the City, POST and other key stakeholders to lead a multiyear public planning process to define the future of Coyote Valley and open it to the public. The plan will inform how to restore these lands to enhance the ecological, economic and qualityof-life benefits that they uniquely provide. During the planning process, which is expected to take 3-5 years, the Authority will provide organized educational events and volunteer opportunities to introduce Coyote Valley to the public. Details on how to get involved can be found at openspaceauthority.org/coyotevalley. Additional funding will be required to fully restore the lands and allow for carefully planned public access. Efforts will continue with private donors, state agencies and private foundations. Details on how to support this private fundraising effort are available at https://openspacetrust.org/ donate/. “We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to protect and restore this Last Chance Landscape for its open space benefits including helping to build a climate resilient future for our urban and natural communities,” said Andrea Mackenzie, General Manager for the Authority. “The Authority is honored to partner with the City and POST to deliver a greener future for Coyote Valley.”
