DESTRUCTIVE IMPACT OF DENYING PEOPLE THEIR HISTORY your local city council member. Ask them to craft a city ordinance which makes local gun violence a misdemeanor and to promote mitigation of all violence. Especially domestic violence.

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR “The most effective way to destroy a people's community to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” This is my revised version of George Orwell's original statement. Dolores Huerta recently sent out an email stating: “Dear Hilbert, when you’re celebrating Thanksgiving this week, add one more thing to pause to give thanks for —the Brady Bill and Brady Background Checks! The Brady Bill was signed into law on November 30, 1993. The landmark law established our nation's background check system on gun sales. It was named for White House Press Secretary Jim Brady, who was shot during the 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan. The fight to pass the Brady Bill, led by Jim and his wife Sarah, took six votes over seven years and three presidencies. Jim and Sarah's work paid off. To date, background checks have stopped over 3.5 million gun sales by prohibited purchasers — helping save countless lives. That is truly something to be thankful for! But even as we cherish the lives saved, we know that too many Thanksgiving tables will have empty chairs, as families mourn gun violence victims. It doesn’t have to be this way. Legislation to expand background checks to cover all gun sales is sitting on Sen. Mitch McConnell’s desk. Urge Mitch McConnell to act today!” EO encourages you to contact

Often, domestic violence involves gun violence. Available data reveal that an estranged wife has a very high probability that she will be shot by her partner in their home if that home has a hand-weapon in it. This is reason enough to encourage any and all homes not to have a gun in the home. Having that gun stored in a locked drawer or cabinet often slows down its use. Often violence is acted out by an individual who has never learned to control his/her emotions which may result in inadvertent physical actions. Each individual needs to acquire the discipline which leads to discussion and negotiation prior to using violence to win an argument. Learn at least one de-escalation method and use it when appropriate. The avoidance of physical violence is enhanced if an individual decides to engage de-escalation methods when appropriate. History records many fights which dealt with issues that could have been mitigated by negotiated discussions. One's understanding of the need to negotiate more often is obtained by reading more history. Quite often, what was involved was crop failure, the need for lebensraum (living space), and the use of violence to impose an ideological approach to an issue. The Crusades and America's Civil War (1864) both involved ideologies. Religion in the first case and the abolition of slavery in the second. In addition, economic issues along with droughts and migration of people are also often used to avoid violence. The actions taken always involve persons and their families to locations thought to be safe, secure and permit

employment. America today is a national community whose history involves the migration of families from Northern Europe, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. The result is having communities which have connections to the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, several African nations like Nigeria, and several Asian nations such as Vietnam, Japan, Korea, and China. During the 1800's the Irish migrated because of the potato crop failure. Many Mexicans and other Central and South Americans migrated here to escape involvement with civil wars, abusive drug syndicates, and lack of local job employment opportunities. The historic first group of immigrants were fur traders who came to North America to obtain beaver furs. Their commerce was responsible for the near extermination of beavers. Recently, a local community's city council enacted ordinances which protect those beavers which recently moved in and built a beaver dam across a creek within the city limits. Hispanic-Latinos migrated north from Mexico, Central and South America to the United States to seek a better life and safety. Asians, especially the Chinese, were not wanted as immigrants by America, but their labor was used to build many infrastructures (tunnels, railroad bed, levees, etc.). The 7th Calvary and 3rd Calvary collected the Iroquois Nation and forced them to leave their lands along the Atlantic Coast from New York to Florida. These Native Americans were escorted to Reservations located in Oklahoma, Texas, and other Southwestern states where reservations were established. Much of these movements were justified by a white-supremacist ideology termed “Manifest Destiny”.

Think about all the conflicts all over the world today which have resulted in millions of refugee populations. For example, the current Syrian Conflicts have resulted in 3,000,000 refugees who are trying to migrate into northern European nations and elsewhere. All of these migrations contain individual families whose migration history is being lost because each generation does not become informed. In my own family, I recently came across the documents which established that my mother and father legally migrated into America back during 1910. Their portal of entry was El Paso, Texas/Cuidad Juárez, Coahuila, Mexico. Their motivation was to escape the 1910 Mexican Civil War. Once the Morales family was settled down, my parents assisted several relatives with their efforts to migrate into America. Their motivation was economic because there were not enough well-paying jobs available in Mexico. And it was difficult to transcend the social levels which existed then. People will migrate to any location which offers an opportunity to improve the family living standard. Access to opportunity, education and fair, equal treatment in society are big attractions. Make an effort to create opportunities for the elders of your family to tell their stories. Many elders endured deprivation, bias, prejudice, and bigotry in order to relocate so that their children had a more favorable opportunity to become educated and achieve the “American Dream” of success. While America's democracy is not perfect it is being improved, which is why many migrate here. Those migrants need to be encouraged to tell their personal experiences acquired during their migration. Those family histories are part of your developmental history. That

history is lost when it is not passed on from one generation to the next. The outcome is a destruction of your prior community as you acculturate to become fully Americanized. These days, diversity has become a reality which is responsible for many good things being enabled. We, the diverse people, have different insights and perspectives. These traits are already known to be basic to being innovative and creative. Silicon Valley would not be the center of innovation and creativity without its diversity. We are learning to live together. We must respect each other's dignity. The outcome is a community having much resilience and flexibility. The mixed marriages have children who possess hybrid vigor. And, what is required is that each of us has obtained some sense of our prior family history which establishes the feeling that we belong here. In addition, we must allow our children to learn well their family history while encouraging them to also learn to become effective skilled individuals whose services are of value to local industry. Knowing howis as essential as knowing who. Keep in mind that it is a woman, usually the mother, who first teaches her child language and logic; right and wrong; along with relationship skills. The father is also involved as the supporter and provider. And it does take a community to assist and support parents in the development of the next generation. There is a historical as well as a biological cycle to this family process. It is a good thing to know your personal history because that made you who you are today (now). Be thankful and appreciative so that you responsibly support the cycle of life you are engaged in today.

MAKE SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY MORE THAN A ONE-TIME EVENT Days like Small Business Saturday can help business owners get face time with customers who might not normally shop there. And consumers get to see what they might be missing—the personal connections and experiences they may not always get from online or big box retailers.

N

ovember 30, 2019, is Small Business Saturday. Starting in 2010, American Express designated this day—the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year— to encourage people to "Shop Small." The financial services company reports that since the commemoration began, "Consumers have reported spending an estimated $103 billion across all Small Business Saturdays combined." As a community revitalization expert, I welcome every chance to shine a spotlight on the small businesses and local entrepreneurs who make up the economic engine of most small and mid-size towns and cities.

Still, shopping small and local can and should be more than a symbolic one-daya-year event. Anyone who wants a stronger, more vibrant community needs to support their small businesses every day. They are the key to economic revitalization. They play a vital role in creating the "sense of place" that gives a community its competitive advantage. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses create two out of every three net new jobs in the private sector. What's more, over half of all Americans own or work for a small business. There's a symbiotic relationship between residents and small business owners. They really need each other. Small businesses provide jobs and keep the dollars circulating locally. Their owners have an active and personal interest in the well-being of the community. They live there. Their kids go to school there. They care about what happens. When wealth is created, business owners are more likely to turn around and reinvest in the community.

In fact, small businesses have a far more important role in their communities than ever before. The old "pillars"—big institutions like banks, hospitals, media outlets, and other businesses—are no longer locally owned. The executives who work for them play a critical short-term role in the community, but often they're not there for the long haul. It's no longer a given that they'll retire there. So small business leaders must step in to fill this leadership void. A few decades ago, the owners of these "pillar" businesses were committed to keeping their communities vibrant. They knew their economic health depended on it. But now that the owners of these former "pillars" live elsewhere, they just don't have the same intimate connection to the community. It makes sense for small businesses to take the lead in pulling communities out of the economic slump many have been in for years. When communities are vibrant, there are more high-paying jobs, and people can afford to shop. Quality of life improves. There's more money for schools and programs that lift people out of poverty. Everyone wins. That's what happened in Pensacola, which in recent years has seen a surge in new businesses and explosive growth in property values. Small businesses have galvanized into a solid group, and they take an active role in the leadership of the community.

The city's business leaders mentor new entrepreneurs. They've put systems in place to ensure that all small business owners are well trained in the leadership skills they need to thrive long-term. And successful small businesses give back. Hopefully other communities will use Pensacola's journey as a blueprint. Many small businesses have made their commitment to their local community part of their brand. This is what customers want. The more chaotic and uncertain the world becomes; the more people crave a safe and stable home base. This is a huge trend, and it's taking place all over America. This is how you, the small business owner, can compete with the mega-retailers. Create an experience for your community. Citizens will know they're being looked after, and they will want to do business locally. This can become your competitive advantage. Take care of the community, and it will take care of you. The bottom line? Don't shop locally only on Small Business Saturday. Do it every chance you get, all year long. A purchase from a small business owner is an investment in your community. Who better to support than those who are working so hard to create a better future for everyone?

'CLEAN CARS' AT LA AUTO SHOW, EVEN AS SOME FIGHT EMISSIONS STANDARDS

Suzanne Potter California News Service

L

OS ANGELES - Clean cars are a hot topic at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week, even though consumer watchdogs claim some car makers are playing a double game. The car companies are touting their "green" vehicles at the same time they support President Donald Trump's decision to loosen federal emissions standards. Shannon Baker-Branstetter, manager of cars and energy policy at Consumer Reports,

said she doesn't believe automakers' claim that they want one clear national emissions standard. "They had one national standard, and they asked the Trump administration to roll back those standards," she said, "and now, we have chaos." Not all carmakers are on board with the president's policy. In July, the state of California announced that BMW, Ford, Honda and Volkswagen all have agreed to voluntarily install clean-car technology and bring more clean cars and electric vehicles to market. The Trump

administration wants to rescind a waiver that lets states pass stricter emission standards, which is the position taken by Fiat-Chrysler, General Motors and Toyota. Baker-Branstetter complained that there is a big disconnect between some of the manufacturers' public stands and their actions. "While automakers are trying to sell greener vehicles and have a green image," she said, "some of them are undermining that by what they're doing with their lobbying money, and by siding with the Trump administration to roll back emission standards." The Justice Department is investigating B-M-W, Ford, Honda and Volkswagen, alleging anti-competitive behavior. Consumer groups charge that it's retaliation for signing the agreement with California. More than a dozen states have signed onto the framework to become "clean-car states." The auto show runs through Sunday at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Details of the California agreement are online at arb.ca.gov, and information on the auto show is at laautoshow.com.

STUDY: CA UNPAID ESTUDIO: TRABAJO DE CAREGIVERS' WORK VALUED CUIDADORES DE CA SIN PAGO, AT $63 BILLION PER YEAR VALUADO EN $63 BILLONES AL AÑO

A new report warns the U.S. will continue to see a shortage of caregivers as the population ages and families are smaller. It says by 2030, there will be only four potential family caregivers for every person over age 80, compared to seven in 2010. Photo Caption: Unsplash

ACRAMENTO, Calif. - Unpaid family caregivers in California volunteer 4 billion hours of their time, and perform work valued at $63 billion each year, according to a recent report from AARP. The Golden State, with almost 40 million residents, has 4.7 million caregivers who help adult friends or relatives with limitations in their daily activities. Blanca Castro, advocacy director for AARP California, says her organization believes lawmakers should require employers to allow workers more flexible schedules and paid time off when they're caring for an older adult. "Policymakers need to give people more time during their workday and not have to take vacation time or sick time to take care of a loved one," she states. California is a leader in supporting caregivers. Last year, state lawmakers raised the amount workers are paid while on family leave. And a 2015 law requires that hospitals train caregivers for tasks such as cleaning wounds, giving medications or moving a person from wheelchair to bed, so that newlyreleased patients don't end up back in the hospital. Castro says a good next step would be to allow licensed nurse practitioners to work without being under contract from a doctor. That would help with the shortage of medical professionals in some areas, and could allow more home care visits. "We are the only state in the western region that still requires the nurse practitioner to have a contract with one physician in order to practice, and that really limits access to health care," she points out. The AARP report is part of a series known as Valuing the Invaluable. It found that in 2017, about 41 million family caregivers in the U.S. provided 34 billion hours of care. The estimated economic value of their unpaid contributions annually is $470 billion.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

MANÁ’S ALEX GONZÁLEZ KEEPS ON DRUMMING Founding member of legendary Rock en Español band looks back at what made the band click and reasons for their continued longevity

O

Arturo Hilario El Observador

I'm having fun doing it. But since I would say 2007 when we did the "Amar es Combatir" tour we brought in a second stage, an island, at the end of the arena because we always try to see how we can get closer to our fans. You know not only the fans that are in front of us, we want to reach the crowd that's all the way in the back.

ne of the most famous “rock en español” bands of the last quarter century, Maná formed in 1986 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The band included Fher Olvera, the vocalist and main composer, the brothers Ulises and Juan Diego Calleros, on guitar and bass respectively, and 15year old drummer Alex González.

So, we started playing some songs on a second stage all the way at the arena. But on this tour, we have now three stages. So, we have the main stage, we have a stage that's in the middle of the catwalk which is in the middle of the arena. And then we have an island that's at the end of the arena. So, the great thing about this is that you know you get to play in three different areas of the arena, and you give your fans all these opportunities to see you in different areas.

At the time they only hoped of booking club shows, much less the far-off dream of a successful radio hit and record album to go with it. At the time they were unaware that in a few short years they would become one of the most iconic musical acts of the Americas, and the prototype for the alternative rock en español movement worldwide. Thirty-three years later, they’re coming towards the end of their current “Rayando el Sol” tour, named after their 1990 all-time hit song, and will play in Oakland on November 30. Drummer Alex González took some time between shows to talk about their origins, and his fateful decision to move from his hometown of Miami to Mexico City and answering a “wanted” ad that changed his life - and gave the world one of the most kinetic drummers in Spanish language music. I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about yourself. I wanted to know a little bit more about how you got started off with Maná and music in general. I've been a founding member of Maná since the band started, but prior to being one of the founding members I met Fernando (Fher), the lead singer prior, because he was looking for a drummer for the previous band that he had called "Sombrero Verde".

Photo Credit: Maná of your songs, "Rayando el Sol" as the tour name? Well the reason is this is the first time that Maná tours without a new record. So, when we were coming up with a name we were going through a whole bunch of names and Fernando came up with the name of the tour. "Why do you want to name it that way?" He says, "Well if you guys remember that was the song that basically saved our career," which is true. I mean we were really struggling as a band.

So, I had recently just moved from Miami to Mexico City, I was 15 years old and my mother saw an ad in the paper that a band was looking for a drummer. A well-known band was looking for a drummer between the ages of 15 to 21 with more than nine years of experience. I was definitely looking for a band especially you know, moving from Miami to Mexico. You know I still wanted to continue my dreams of being in a band playing with a band, so long story short I went, there were other drummers there.

We had put out already our first record in 1987 but a lot didn't happen. We toured very few times around the country. We weren't getting any gigs and the economic situation was really bad. I was personally living you know from friends to friends’ homes and long story short when we came back from a record company meeting and we took our gambles and the director of the company said, "You know nothing is going to happen with you guys. You know this whole thing, rock en español, doesn't work. You guys are doing salsa, rock and reggae rock and all that. You know that's not going to click off."

I asked Fer for me to be the last one to audition because I wanted to see how the drummers played. In that way I could learn the songs a bit better. So, when it was my turn to go up and play the songs, I already know them fairly well, so I played and Fernando really liked what he saw, and what he heard.

We were pretty bummed out. So, we came back from that meeting we were staying at a friend's house in La Condesa [neighborhood] and Fernando went and he bought some beers. Normally we would always travel with an electric guitar, with a bass guitar, a drum machine and a four-track recorder.

I went by train actually from Mexico City to Guadalajara which was an amazing trip - 12 hours on a train. And I arrived in Guadalajara and met the rest of the guys in Sombrero Verde. I auditioned and they told me that I got the gig, so long story short I stayed in Guadalajara. I came to live by myself when I was 15 years old, I lived in Fernando's house with his mom and his sisters.

And we just started drinking beer and just trying to write something, and then we came up with this really cool melodic circle of different parts: verse, chorus [and] bridge. We were working all night and then I went to bed and Fernando kept writing and when I woke up the next morning he said, "I have the lyrics. You know what, I was just going to go to sleep and the sun started to rise and I started coming up with these lyrics."

I lived in the back part of his house where they had the rehearsal space. There was this little room where I was renting next to the rehearsal space, and the rest is history. I played with Sombrero Verde from 1984 to 86. That's when Fernando decided to disband that band and to start a brandnew band. So that's why you know we just started dabbling in the whole rock en español thing but mixing more Latin elements. Sombrero Verde was already singing rock en español from 1981. So, it was just like a normal transition. Then the rest was a lot of hard work and history. So here we are you know 30 something years later. Now talking about your most current tour, what is the meaning behind using the name of one

And [he] sang it to me. I mean it's "Rayando el Sol", and I go, "Wow man that's a great lyric." So what we did was we recorded that demo then we gave it to a friend of ours, Jose Quintana, who was a person that has always believed in our band and he heard it and goes, "Wow this is this is a great sound. This has potential." He took the demos to Warner Brothers Mexico. They heard it, and they said it [sounded] like a great song. But here's the funny thing though, we record album "Falta Amor", where "Rayando el Sol" is included, and when they released the song the company didn't get too behind it. There wasn't that much promotion. We did a video, but it really didn't take off. The fans were the ones who started calling the radio station is saying, "Hey

can you play that song again?" So, the fans really made that song into what it is. We started getting more phone calls, you know to play in clubs, so we started really playing a lot and then people saw us live and that really started resonating and getting the word around. We toured almost two and a half years behind that that record from all 1990-91 and a little bit of 92 and then immediately we started working on the next record. Basically, that's why we made this tour "Rayando el Sol". That song saved our career. In fact, there would be no Maná [without it]. I was wondering after all this time you guys have had this band and constantly been touring, what do you like best about the touring aspect? Oh, we're addicted to touring. I mean that's basically a huge part of why Maná is successful. It's because we've toured so much, and people get to see us play. You know it's not the same having a song on the radio playing 24/7 as opposed to somebody seeing you live and seeing if you can actually play that, or if you can actually play the record. We've always had a very good credibility as a live band and we always invested a lot of our money into the production and to making sure that the sound system is awesome, and that we have a great crew, and that the lighting gear is great and [we're] always coming up with good ideas. At the same time taking care of ticket prices to make sure that everybody has the chance to see a band. So, it's so important to tour and that's that you also build your base. We love going to other countries, seeing other cultures, meeting new friends, seeing old friends. You know, just the adrenaline once the lights go off and you hear the roar of the crowd, that gets you so pumped up and then hit the stage and just give 100 percent.

And thanks to the P.A. system that we had the video screens and stuff, the people can hear anywhere there in the arena they're hearing really really good, and they're seeing the band really really good. So that's like I mentioned before, you know we always have you know thinking about our fans and to make sure that they get to see the band and hear the band the best possible. Then with my solo, what I'm doing now is I wanted to do something different from the previous tours. So now what I did was I have a drum set that it's a regular kit, the main kit that I'm using. When it's time for my solo my drum kit adds an extra kit in the back. So, it's a hybrid kit. So, at the end of the day I'm surrounded 360. And it's fun because I'm going around playing all these drums and cymbals and everything is acoustic, there's no electronics. It's just me playing all these amazing drums and cymbals and just having fun. That's something that that I really enjoy, and the fans also really like. Yeah of course. Thanks Alex. Now my last question is, why do you think folks should come out to Oakland on November 30 to see you guys on tour? Well I think we have some of the best fans in the world because we're seeing second generation, third generation fans going to our shows. We've seen [people of] a lot of different ethnic backgrounds going to our shows on this tour and it's so amazing because you know every single show that we've played has been sold. On one hand there's all these fans that have seen Maná before. That are excited to see us again. There are fans that are going to see Maná for the first time which is amazing when we see and read their feedback on social media. And then there's people that are going to see Maná just out of curiosity. It's great when there's people that don't speak Spanish and they're in the crowd seeing the band and because you know they have heard about us or they're curious about rock en español and they talk about social issues, human rights, the environment, how we've been pushing that you know to get immigration reform.

So, we really love playing and that's something that we really cherish, and we really try to make sure that we give the people the best show possible and we get their money's worth in. We want to have people leave inspired, leave people happy and with a positive attitude and go home and say, "Well I had a great time and it was worth it."

So, what I can tell you is that you're going to see a concert that lasts more than two hours. They're going to see a band that has a variety of music even though it's a pop rock band. But we play so many different styles of Latin music and at the other end also they go to see an amazing production. We get close to our fans and that we interact with our fans.

Speaking of giving the performance 100 percent, there's a moment in your tour where there's a change of stage location in the venue and you’re doing a drum solo as the rest of the band relocates in the dark. I was wondering how that developed?

We really enjoy playing and people see that and they feel that, they see a band that's giving everything on the stage and getting the crowd going so hopefully you know the fans that have seen Maná, you're gonna have an amazing time, and the fans that are gonna see Maná for the first time they're gonna be also having a great time and probably blown away.

I've always been doing a drum solo with Maná, that's something that I always really enjoy doing and it's just a fun moment of me with the audience and interacting and just doing something fun that people can enjoy and appreciate at the same time.

And the people that want to go see a band that they've never seen before. I think they're going to be very satisfied and very happy.

EARTHTALK Q&A: LAWN CHEMICALS AND DOG CANCER Dear EarthTalk: Is it true that lawn chemicals can cause canine cancer, and if so, how can I protect my dog? -- Bill W., Ithaca, NY ENGLISH

Maybe you shouldn't let your dog run free at the park — or in your neighbor's yard — if carcinogenic chemicals are used on the lawn. Photo Credit: Brett Sayles, Pexels.

U

nfortunately, the answer may very well be yes. A 2012 study published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal, Environmental Research, found that exposure to certain lawn care products, such as the nearly ubiquitous herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2 4-D for short), increases dogs’ chances of developing Canine Malignant Lymphoma (CML) by 70 percent. When ingested repeatedly, 2 4-D acts as an endocrine disruptor, mutating a dog’s white blood cell count allowing malignant tumor cells to replicate unchecked. While obviously worrisome for dogs and those of us who love them, the implications for people aren’t good either, given the similarities between the onset of CML in canines and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in humans.

A 2013 study in another peer-reviewed journal, Science of the Total Environment, found that “exposure to herbicide-treated lawns has been associated with significantly higher bladder cancer risk in dogs.” Certain breeds of dogs (terriers, beagles, sheep dogs) are at greater risk, but needless to say lots of 2 4-D or other synthetic lawn chemicals like glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp) aren’t good for dogs of any stripe. “A strong justification for the work was that dogs may serve as sentinels for potentially harmful environmental exposures in humans,” report the researchers behind the bladder cancer study. What can you do to help prevent more dogs (and humans) from getting sick? For starters, avoid using lawn care chemicals around your home. And if you hire or manage someone else to take care of your yard, make sure they are not using 2 4-D, glyphosate or any other potentially hazardous pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Getting rid of your lawn altogether and replacing it with regionally adapted native plants that don’t need fertilizers or pesticides to thrive is another way to protect dogs from chemicals while saving yourself the trouble of having to mow the lawn. If you can’t live without a grassy green lawn and can’t bear to just let it go wild, opt for all-natural, organic inputs. For instance, organic compost distributed across your lawn with a shovel in a thin layer can do just as well or better at nourishing your grass as chemical fertilizers. For weed control (beyond good-

old hand-pulling), a great all-natural alternative to RoundUp is BurnOut, which uses the power of foodgrade vinegar and clove oil instead of glyphosate to eradicate unwanted plants. As for protecting your dog while out on a walk, steer clear of private lawns, even if you have to leash Fido to keep him out of neighbors’ yards. And the days of letting your dog run free in parks where your municipality may use questionable landscaping chemicals are over now that we know the potential consequences. Fortunately, many enlightened cities and towns have taken steps to rid their publicly accessible lands of such hazardous treatments. But you won’t know unless you ask, so contact your local parks department to find out exactly what they’re spraying. And if you don’t like the answer, rally other dog owners to help get it changed, for dogs’ sake. amentablemente, la respuesta puede ser sí.

ber was stripped of its license to operate in London on Monday November 25. The governing body, TfL (Transport for London), stated that Uber does not meet the “fit and proper” requirements for private hire operators. Uber immediately appealed, so it’s business as usual for Uber drivers and riders today, but both sides are gearing up for a fight.

Uber does not have a stellar reputation. There have been all kinds of claims against the company. Some warranted, others not. All in, this is the second time in two years that the company’s license renewal has been rejected. The London Cab Drivers also hate — and I do mean hate — Uber and everything it stands for. I spend a fair amount of time in London, and the cabbies universally want Uber off the roads. At first, it was a pride thing. It used to take a remarkable amount of education to be a London cabbie. You may call it “street smarts,” but they had to take a test that the average Londoner might well fail. Unlike many planned cities (even NYC), London evolved over time, and the only way to know your way around is (was) by memory. In the age of Waze, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and other apps, all you need to do is be able to drive. That’s the main point. The cabbies and private car services in London are getting destroyed by Uber (and by other ride-sharing companies). They want them gone. Then, there’s the other “European” strategy. Don’t invest in tech. Just fine it. I’m not sure that one fully applies here, but it’s a disturbing pattern emerging across the whole of Western

Photo Credit: Pixabay Europe. Uber tweeted, “We have fundamentally changed our business over the last 2 years, setting the standard for safety in the industry. TfL’s decision on our London licence is wrong and we will appeal,” which will let Uber’s 3.5 million customers and 45,000 driver breathe a little easier today. My guess is that Uber will work this out. Clearly, Uber has room for improvement, and this may just be the government putting them on notice (again). I can’t imagine a major city without Uber. That said, Lyft certainly can.
