HAVE THE COURAGE TO SPEAK UP
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR “Having the courage to speak against prevailing opinion in civil strife is often greater than that demanded on the battlefield” is a statement made by Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894). His main contribution to medicine was an 1843 essay on a contagion (disease) later identified as measles. This measles disease can be controlled by immunization of a child at early ages. In today's practice, school districts require that every child be immunized. There are, unfortunately, a certain small number of parents who do not want their children immunized. As the number of unimmunized children increases, this virus disease invariably makes a come-back. This is unfortunate, because measles is one disease which almost was eradicated worldwide. This same disease was brought to the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors. Native American tribal populations had never been exposed to this viral disease. Consequently, the resident population had never developed any immunity.
Measles epidemics happened amongst indigent peoples with the consequence that an estimated 60% of the native indigent population died. Historians often do not mention the impact of this measles disease because of their focus on what the European immigrants were accomplishing as they invaded and took charge as the dominant population. It takes a certain level of courage for parents to decide not to have their children get measles shots (i.e. be immunized). They must stand up against the professional opinions of public health specialists and the attendance requirements established by school authorities. This issue is revisited every school year, especially when students return to their classes after their summer vacations. Our communities must begin to consider ways of identifying and neutralizing certain strongwilled individuals. At the national level, the current President, Donald J. Trump, is a contrarian who consistently does not perform according to traditional expectations. There are also several elected obstructionists. Mitch McConnel, (Senator: South Carolina) is the best example of an elected official who is extremely partisan and an
effective obstructionist. For example, all the proposed legislation which were initiated by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and endorsed by the House Democratic majority, ended up on Senator Mitch McConnel's desk and have stayed there. As Senate Majority Leader it is his job to schedule these items for consideration by the Senate. The Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, has not processed any legislation sent by the House of Representatives. This is obstruction by those who are elected officials whose re-election must not happen during the coming 2020 Presidential Election Year. I am concerned that the Democratic Party strategists are focused upon efforts which may Keep the House Blue plus result in the election of a Blue Senate (i.e., flip the Senate from Red to Blue). Having both the House and the Senate with a Democratic Party Majority is their objective. Achieving that would simplify passing proposed liberal progressive legislation. While I am a registered Democratic voter, I am also aware that the best legislation is crafted when bipartisan debate and negotiation happens while the legislative issue is being crafted. This
friendly adversarial debate is part of the checks and balances which ensures that all advocates of special interests have their voice and vote heard at the conference table. It is very important that all special interests', especially those advocates of women, low income working class, and retired elderly, have a presence (seat, voice and vote) during these preliminary conferences to ensure that their concerns are presented, heard, and included. The present Trump Administration does not accept the current Global Climate Change evidence collected by climatologists. Trump has decided not to recognize Global Climate Change as being ‘really important’. According to a Sierra Club official, “Here’s why our planet needs you today -- the United Nations just released a report with a dire warning -- without immediate action, global warming will fundamentally transform our world. These consequences are not for future generations to experience at some distant date, they are already here. If we don’t do something now, global warming will lead to social disruption, economic damage, and public health impacts on a scale never seen before.”
I do not understand how all that scientific evidence which climatologists have recorded and collected can be ignored. Global Climate Changes are happening: Higher temperatures; larger more destructive storms with longer cycles. Non-traditional global weather events having higher energy levels are happening now. Higher weather temperatures (even if it’s only one-degree Fahrenheit), result in higher moisture content clouds. Then when these cloud's temperature drops below the dew point', very much higher volumes of rain fall. This process results in the experiences being reporter: Flash floods; higher water volumes flowing down creek beds and rivers. Homes built on lowland flood plains end up being surrounded by rainwater which makes roads impassable. The very good outcome of all this is that this community's sixyear drought was broken; its reservoirs are almost full. Thus, our supply of drinking water is assured, and ‘Life is Good’ again. It takes courage to speak up! It takes courage to remind the nay-sayers amongst us, that our lifestyle is much better than that of many others.

OS ANGELES - In California, 1.3 million children younger than age five may lose out on essential services because of a hostile immigration climate, according to a new report.
Researchers from two children's advocacy groups found that the Trump administration's anti-immigrant policies and heightened law enforcement have had major impacts on children up to age five.
Andrea Lopez, family and community engagement coordinator at Para Los Ninos, which runs Head Start child care centers in Los Angeles, says families are dropping out of crucial programs for fear of being deported. "That's been the most heart-wrenching thing for us, is seeing their struggle and the fear that has been embedded in them," she states. Lopez says many families are refusing all forms of public assistance, even for their American citizen children, mistakenly believing that this would be held against them when applying for residency. President Donald Trump says his policies are designed to reinforce the rule of law and save taxpayer dollars. Mayra Alvarez, a report coauthor and president of The Children's Partnership, an advocacy organization focused on children's health equity, says many children suffer, terrified that their parents won't be there when they get home from school. "The kids are becoming more aggressive," she points out. "There's also greater separation anxiety. Social withdrawal, being more stressed out as a result of this environment."
A new report says many young children in immigrant families are having a hard time in preschool, linking fear and distress to the current political climate. Photo Credit: Greg Gayne/Para Los Ninos Patricia Lozano, another coauthor and executive director of Early Edge California, an advocacy organization focused on early learning, encourages state policymakers to pass a law that declares preschools and day care centers off limits to immigration officers - something already in place at K-12 schools in the state. "Early childhood programs should be safe places for families, and the providers and teachers need the support to provide the right resources to face this hostile environment," she stresses. California demonstrated its commitment to early childhood programs by allocating funds in the new state budget to train home visitors from the Cal Works program on ways to blunt the impact of federal immigration policies and help families connect to needed services.

EFE; Translation by Arturo Hilario
T
he growth of eSports in Latin America is undoubtedly one of the trends that has evolved into a sport, with the creation of new teams, sponsors and competitions, and now, the need of some countries to regulate laws for it as a sport.
It all starts with the simple question, are eSports a sport? Recently this was the question that opened the debate at a public hearing in Brazil with a Senate bill 383 of 2017 that seeks to regulate electronic sports.
In some states of the Latin American region, laws already indicate that eSports are a sport like any other, because it has the minimum essential factors that any traditional sport has: athletes, cash prizes, a public and competitions. In 2017, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said in a statement that eSports, "could be considered a sporting activity." To this we add the birth of innumerable confederations and federations to "help" or "encourage" the electronic games market. The problem is that this also brought with it many doubts about the "good will" of these confederations. In the last public hearing of Brazil, on November 21, led by Senator Leila Barros, despite being accompanied by experts in electronic sports in the session, it generated outrage among the gamer community, because the debates are being driven by people with little participation in eSports. To this is added that "Draft5", a specialist in the eSports market, in one of its publications highlights certain irregularities in the bill that places federations as "unique representatives" of the eSports scenario
Photo Credit: Unsplash and that the senator Roberto Rocha of the PSDB-MA party has his son Roberto Rocha Jr. as vice president of a federation, generating a conflict of interest between a federation and the eSports market. This is just the tip of an iceberg that is being replicated in other Latin American countries, creating an impressive growth of eSports, the amount of public viewership and therefore sponsors who begin to lay their eyes on them. As has happened with most of the sports that were professionalized, these situations are an indication of the interest that this world arouses and everything that happens from now on will serve to build more solid foundations of a sport that does not seem to slow its growth in Latin America.

GET BACK IN YOUR FAVORITE JEANS WITH THESE WEIGHT LOSS TIPS

o you have a favorite pair of jeans sitting in your closet with the hopes that one day they will fit again? You’re not alone!
American women want to lose an average of 16.8 pounds to fit into their favorite pair of jeans and nearly 39 percent say they like to keep jeans in their closet that don’t fit to motivate them to lose weight, according to a survey by Nutrisystem. And while trying on jeans that don’t fit from the back of your closet or even a new pair at the store can be frustrating, being equipped with the right tips can help you get on the weight loss track and back in those jeans. 1. Eat Smart and Often. Aim to eat smaller meals every two to three hours, six times a day so that you don’t binge or overdo it. You’ll feel full and satisfied, which will help you make smarter choices. 2. Keep the Good Stuff Where You Can See it. It may sound overly simple but it’s true, you are more likely to eat healthy foods if you put them in a visible, easy-to-reach location. And for the fridge? Don’t put your fruits and veggies in the produce bin! The middle shelf is the sweet spot. That’s where to keep your celery, carrots, apples, oranges and all that good stuff. 3. Don’t Go It Alone. Losing weight isn’t exactly a cakewalk. But it doesn’t have to be impossible. Find a weight loss plan that works for you and fits in with your lifestyle. Certain weight loss programs ensure you feel satisfied throughout the day and take the guesswork out of dieting, making it easier to stick with the plan and drop those pounds. 4. Drink Up. Hunger and thirst are easily confused, so stay hydrated. But don’t make the mistake of drinking your calories,” says dietitian Courtney McCormick. Opt for water. If you’re looking for a more flavorful option, add fresh fruit slices, a few squeezes of lemon or some sprigs of mint leaves. 5. Find Your Routine and Stick With it. It’s important to plan for what you’ll eat and when you’ll exercise each week. Carve out part of your day that works for your schedule and you’ll be much more likely to follow through. You owe it to yourself to focus on your health. Making changes is never easy at first but hang in there. Your results will fuel your continued commitment. For more information and more great tips, visit theleaf.nutrisystem.com. Remember, making healthy changes can help you solve your denim dilemma and get you back into your favorite jeans in no time!

¡No estás solo!
3. No te vayas solo. 5. Encuentra tu rutina y apégate a ella.

LOGAN COUTURE NAMED 'SHARKS PLAYER OF THE MONTH' FOR NOVEMBER
S
San Jose Sharks
AN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Sharks announced this week that captain Logan Couture has been selected as the 'Sharks Player of the Month' for November. Couture, 30, finished the month of November with 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists), which led all Sharks, and a plus-7 rating. He also led the team in assists and was tied for first in goals over that time frame. Throughout the month, the centerman registered two three-assist contests, recorded his fourth career four-point game, and was the

first player in franchise history to score the overtime goal in consecutive team games (Nov. 21 at Vegas Golden Knights and Nov. 23 vs New York Islanders). The six-foot-one, 200-pound native of Guelph, Ontario was originally selected by San Jose in the 2007 NHL Draft (first round, ninth overall). Couture is currently first on San Jose in assists (20) and points (28), fourth in goals (eight) and shots (73) and tied for fourth in takeaways (18). He is currently tied for 11th in the NHL in assists (20). This is the seventh player of the month recognition for Couture.
EARTHTALK Q&A: PAPER PRODUCTION Dear EarthTalk: You don’t hear much anymore about the cutting of our forests to make paper. Has this destructive practice just moved overseas where we don’t have to confront it, or have increases in recycling in recent years made paper production less destructive? – J. W., Greenville, SC.

t’s true that saving paper (and in turn saving trees) used to be a big discussion topic at home, school and office, but these days you don’t hear much about it. This is likely because paper recycling has become ubiquitous; most of us are now well-versed in how to sort recyclable paper from other “waste.” According to the American Paper and Forest Association (AF&PA), upwards of two-thirds of all paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling in 2018. What this means is that a lot of the paper we use now gets made with recycled materials that don’t cause more logging and deforestation. A big player in this march forward has been the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an international non-profit that sets standards on forest products and then certifies and labels those that meet the standards as eco-friendly. Another major factor has been the establishment of guidelines set forth and agreed to by 200 governmental and other entities in 2014’s New York Declaration of Forests (NYDP), an international agreement to “end natural forest loss” by 2030.

Despite this progress, deforestation for paper still continues unabated in Indonesia and other parts of the developing world where government oversight is non-existent and profit incentives are too great for illegal loggers to ignore. Some 10 percent of global deforestation (a major driver of climate change) is due to logging for wood products including paper, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).
Santa Run: Dec. 15

UCS reports that clearing tropical forests and replacing them with mono-cultural plantations of so-called “fastwood” trees like acacia, partly to make virgin paper, accounts for more deforestation across Indonesia than more infamous environ-

mental bogeymen like palm oil production and coal mining. “This is particularly harmful because about a quarter of fastwood plantations were cleared on carbon-rich peat soils,” reports UCS, “adding significantly to global warming pollution.” Beyond recycled paper itself, there are some promising alternatives to wood pulp as a feedstock for paper production. Some well-known alt-paper feedstocks include fiber crops like bamboo, kenaf, hemp, flax and jute, agricultural scraps such as sugarcane bagasse, corn husks or straw, and textiles left-over in the production of fabrics and rope. A newer entrant in the green paper alternatives playing field is calcium carbonate—literally rock dust— which is made by pulverizing construction waste and fusing it together with plastic before compressing it with massive rollers into its final paperthin form. What about, you might ask, the rapidly-growing digital age we find ourselves in now? Isn’t that saving trees? Yes, but consider the electricity load of all the computers, tablets and phones, as well as the server farms and network switching facilities that keep your e-mail inbox full and your Facebook feed full of new content. They’re largely powered by coal and other fossil fuels. Our addiction to digital information might just be taking a larger toll on the planet than if we still got our information the old-fashioned way—from actual books, magazines, newspapers and printed reports.
