On this past December 3rd Ricardo Lara was re-elected as the Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus. The decision was unanimous and now puts the Senator as the chair of this group. The Caucus is now the largest in legislature, with 26 members, which represent the growth of the Latino demographics in general. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE who need to voluntarily return to Mexico. That will not happen because we are indigenous….here to stay and belong. Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR
My mother, Guadalupe Dorado de Morales, was a very devout religious person who, without fail, prayed to ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ as her patron saint. During a journey to Mexico, accompanied by my mother, sister Socorro, our children Linda, Antonio, and Maria and wife, Betty, we went to visit the basilica which is today called ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’. This basilica is impressive though built simply of red bricks. Many devout indigenous people were present during our visit. Their devotion and faith were evident. During our visit, we toured the ruins of Teoticuahan. The ruins to be seen, even today, are the product of a civilized order and economy. We climbed the Pyramid of the Sun, where at the top, my children, each at different times, reported that they felt that they belonged there. They had experienced some sort of paranormal cosmic kharma. Know, that today, we are still people of great devotion and faith, and we are all taught to use human logic, to follow the rule of law and order, which we perceive to be inequitably available to us. Regardless, many of us are the descendants of families whose genetic history goes back to primordial times somewhere here in America. Today, many of us are saddened. We are disdained by elected members of U.S. Congress, who consider Mexicans to be foreigners
As Latinos, we must have the drive, and the faith, to master the many principles of modern science, technology, engineering, and math. (STEM). Our forefathers had mastered them and had used them to build edifices and temples which may be viewed even today. Know that it was a Mexican mathemetician who described the concept of ‘zero’ (nada) which enabled European mathemeticians to connect negaitive numbers to positive numbers with the result that an important step was accomplished which enabled the creation of calculus. Many who saw the movie “Stand and Deliver” where an epic story of a Latin teacher in East Los Angeles was able to teach barrio students mathematics to a level of understanding that enabled them to perform, with expertise, which national and local school officials would not accept as being possible. What that teacher instilled in his students was the faith of accomplishment which enabled total understanding. His teaching methods were adapted slowly by mainstream education authorities. Today, we are being asked to ‘Stand and Deliver’ because the current society and economy is failing because of greed and corruption, much of which is ‘legal’ because the purpose and intent of the U.S.Constitution has been thwarted. This can be corrected, but it will take a persevering concerted effort to correct the current misdistribution of the natural wealth and abundance which exists on this planet Earth.
Let me tell you why many of us are people of ‘Faith’. We are furtunate to live in ‘Silicon Valley’ where many virtual natural phenomenon are exploited to enable eletronic devices, e.g., ‘smart phones’, computers, etc. Consider that we all are accustomed to the reliability of these electronic systems and devices. I ask you now to consider the ‘electron’ which physicists tell us is a ‘negative particle, having almost no mass’. None of us have ever seen an electron, yet we rely upon it with great faith. It performs what it does according to its nature without fail. Electricity is defined as ‘a flow of electrons’. It also enables computers to work because when an electron is in a ‘field’, that field is negative; when not there, that field is positive. It is on this natural phenomenon, which man did not create, and which exists throughout the universe, that became the binary numeric system which became the basis of any and all programs. MicroSoft, Intel, Adobe, and many other firms are successful because they correctly use these natural phenomenon. Without knowing it, their technical staffs are people of great faith and rely upon natural phenomenon. Let’s get back to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Back in 1530, Juan Diego, an indigenous person, was asked to be the Virgin’s messenger. In 1999, Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Virgin Mary Patroness of the Americas, Empress of Latin America, and Protectress of Unborn Children. I recommend you google ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’, find and read the history by Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio based on original documents wriiten in Nahuatl recording these miracles.∆

The day laborer marching down Alum Rock towards San Jose City Hall yelled out to the multitude, “What do we want?” Screaming back with all their might, protestors answered, “Immigration reform!”
For over seven years I have been an organizer of a great majority of the immigration reform actions in San Jose, in different capacities: as a member of a student organization at San Jose State University that advocates for undocumented students, a member of the May 1st Coalition, a community organizer and organizing director of a local non-profit that empowers immigrants, and a labor union organizer. To paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr., as an organizer my duty was to fight for justice because that is what love looks like in public.
The values of justice, love, sacrifice, and serving the people--so that we are treated with dignity and equality--did not allow me to apply for Deferred Action for over three months. This “benefit” confers the “right” to be treated as secondclass, to forego other basic human rights such as family unity, voting, access to a safety net, and the freedom to travel. Never once was I in the streets with the people demanding only a workpermit.

In the streets, never once, have I heard my community answer the above question with, “A work permit!”
Starting on August 15, undocumented community members throughout the nation between the ages of 15 and 30, that meet certain requirements, have been coming out of the shadows and filing their DACA and employment authorization applications. About 300,000 individuals have applied for this benefit.
I am what the media and other sources have labeled a DREAMer. I was brought to the United States at the age of seven. I completed second to twelfth grade in public schools, attended Evergreen Valley College, and transferred to San Jose State University where I received a B.A. in Social Science, Single-Subject Prep.
With full honesty, this process has been very difficult. On the level of political empowerment, this is not what I fought for. On a personal level, I could not allow myself to apply before helping others (one of the organizer syndromes). The values that I learned from my mother, the Catholic faith I grew up with, and reading

In two weeks I finished putting together my Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) packet. Through the process my heavy heart felt contradictory emotions: feelings of joy, accomplishment, excitement, and freedom, alternated with vulnerable feelings of being a sell-out, failing, and accepting to be dehumanized. My mind exploded with memories of
At an early age I understood that sacrifice is needed to bear witness to change. From being open in public about my undocumented status and participating in a hunger strike, to frequently protesting outside ICE offices and now applying to Deferred Action, sacrifice brings with it new life. I apply for DACA feeling reenergized to be part of a historic and heroic struggle to win immigration reform. The necessity to organize has become more urgent. While I have felt this urgency for close to ten years, moments like this of great sacrifice bring a renewed sense of hope. With the hope that millions of people have inside comes the duty to organize. ¡Let’s continue organizing!

DIOVAN (DYE’-o-van) (valsartan) Tablets Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? DIOVAN can cause harm or death to an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. If you get pregnant while taking DIOVAN, tell your doctor right away. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: • lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. • treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. • improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. Medicines that lower your blood pressure lower your chance of having a stroke or heart attack. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: • have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. • have a heart condition • have liver problems • have kidney problems • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” • are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. • have ever had a reaction called angioedema, to another blood pressure medicine. Angioedema causes swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat, and may cause difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: • other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem • water pills (also called “diuretics”) • potassium supplements. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • a salt substitute. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) • certain antibiotics (rifamycin group), a drug used to protect against transplant rejection (cyclosporin) or an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV/AIDS infection (ritonavir). These drugs may increase the effect of valsartan. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? • Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. • For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. • If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child.

• For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. • DIOVAN can be taken with or without food. • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. • If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. 71 years later: Remembering Pearl Harbor Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR As a Naval Base, Pearl Harbor sits quietly in a beautiful port in the Hawaiian island of Oahu and until the events that occurred on December 7th, 1941 the lagoon harbor managed to avoid any type of hostile situation. At first established to assist American citizens in the whaling industry and provide some type of general security for Hawaii in the late 1800’s Pear Harbor was a quiet base whose activity was generally to dock U.S. ships and perform maintenance.
According to the official Pearl Harbor site, Japan had sought out to take over Asia. By the late 1930’s it was becoming a real possibility. After the United States, the Netherlands and Great Britain worried about Japans pursuits there was a freezing of Japanese assets. Not wanting to halt their ambitions, General Hideki Tojo decided to go through with its takeover. After the U.S. began producing for the war effort, Tojo saw our country as a threat. This is how the initial plans for an attack to the Hawaiian base were started. Being his countries Prime Minister General Tojo was able to outline and
execute his imperialistic plans with ease. Calculated and precise, the 2-hour attack left a total of 3,500 Americans dead or wounded. It took place in the early morning of December 7th, 1941 and started with a first wave that decimated the U.S.S. Arizona and left her crew of 1,177 dead. The heartbreak of these senseless deaths was engulfed along with emotions of anger and confusion. The U.S. was not in any war and out of all places Pearl Harbor was not prepared or able to defend itself from this attack. Four days after the De-
cember 7th attack the United States formally declared war on Japan and Germany, thus thrusting one of the greatest superpowers into a war that would see a dramatic shift because of their involvement, as well as that from Russia in the East. This propulsion into the war made the U.S. the most economically powerful country in the world from that moment forward. In the end General Hideki Tojo was tried by an International Military Tribunal for the Far East, and was hung on December 23rd, 1948 for his war crimes. His acts caused the deaths of all
those at Pearl Harbor and his own people. The resulting bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which totaled 246,000 casualties, could have been avoided had he complied with the several countries who were against his takeover of China. These days we can look back at the memorials, the mostly unrealistic Hollywood films, or the interviews and news clippings of the event. All these stories commemorate a time where peace was shaken and the alliances of the people of the U.S. were tested. Neighbors turned on each other for being Japanese and inter-
ments occurred. Even here in the bay area there were camps that hosted these Japanese families. In 1944 the U.S.S. Missouri was christened and left the San Francisco Bay Area to fight in the East during World War II. It was the last battleship to be built by the United States. It was also the ship where Japan formally surrendered on. These days it sits unperturbed in Hawaii, welcoming visitors and wonderers who can stand in historical sites and remember the people who sacrificed and fought for our country. At last there is peacefulness.

Osvaldo Castillo EL OBSERVADOR On Saturday December 1, Applied Materials held its 17 th annual “Helping Hands Day”, an event where employees and their families joined together to give back to the community by assembling and packing 6,000 boxes filled with 118,680 pounds of food, which the company distributed to low income families and individuals across Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. “Applied traditionally runs one of the largest corporate food drives and employees across the company join together to donate their time, food and funds,” said Amaya Weigert, Media Relations, Corporate Communications, at Applied Materials. “Approximately 300 employees and their families gathered in 12 assembly lines to help assemble and pack 6,000 boxes of traditional holiday meals. In the
17 years Applied has done this event, employees have packed a total of 60,000 boxes.” The Applied Materials Foundation funded the purchase of food, which was selected by Applied’s longtime community partner Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara, and San Mateo Counties. The event took place at Second Harvest’s new Cypress Center, which serves as their volunteer and fresh produce hub. “Second Harvest distributes the food to individuals and families in need across Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties through a network of more than 300 nonprofit agencies,” Weigert said. “The 6,000 boxes packed at the event will result in approximately 118,680 pounds of food which, in addition to fresh milk, chicken, tortillas and produce which will also be
distributed, equates to approximately 188,231 meals.” Last year’s drive efforts were valued at $1 million and enabled benefiting food banks to deliver 2 million meals in local communities. Helping Hands is just one of the many activities employees participate in to support the food drive. Others include spaghetti feeds, pie throws, bake sales and candy grahams to raise funds, and group volunteer shifts sorting food at the food bank. “Applied has been an active member of the community for more than 30 years,” Weigert said. “Each year, Applied Materials and its Foundation donate approximately $5M to local organizations focused on education, the arts, the environment, and civic development.”

For example, let some of your children or grandchildren prepare holiday meals, bake cookies or help decorate the house. 6. Share responsibilities. Ask for help. Delegate holiday tasks so you’re not overstressed with deadlines. 7. Don’t have unrealistic expectations about what you can and can’t do during the holidays. Give yourself credit for what you can do and recognize you’re not super human. When you do, you’ll have a more enjoyable holiday season.

Bacon-Cheddar Pinwheels (Makes 16 pinwheels)
1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1can (8 oz) Pillsbury Crescent Recipe Creations refrigerated seamless dough sheet. 2 tablespoons ranch dressing 1/4 cup cooked real bacon pieces or 4 slices bacon, crisply cooked, crumbled 1/2 cup finely shredded cheddar cheese (2 oz) 1/4 cup chopped green onions (4 medium) • Heat oven to 350 degrees F. If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough; separate into 2 long rectangles. Press each into 12x4-inch rectangle, firmly pressing perforations to seal. If using dough sheet: unroll dough; cut lengthwise into 2 long rectangles. Press each into 12x4-inch rectangle. • Spread dressing over each rectangle to edges. Sprinkle each with bacon, cheddar cheese and onions. Starting with one short side, roll up each rectangle; press edge to seal. With a serrated knife, cut each roll into 8 slices; place cut side down on ungreased cookie sheet. • Bake 12 to 17 minutes or until edges are deep golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm.

La Sagrada Virgen de Guadalupe
La controversia sobre las apariciones de la Virgen de Guadalupe continuan hasta hoy. Marion Jiménez Castillo EL OBSERVADOR La veneración a la Virgen de Guadalupe, se ha convertido con el paso de los siglos, en todo un dogma inalterable de la fe católica. Sin embargo, existen personas que han puesto en duda que dichas apariciones sean reales. El abad Guillermo Schulenburg, puso en duda las apariciones de la Virgen Morena y hasta intentó desacreditar la existencia del indio Juan Diego, enviando una carta al Vaticano para que se le pusiera un alto a su canonización. En aquel momento miles de sacerdotes, obispos y cardenales, se opusieron al abad, adjudicándole el nombre de “católico de pobre fe”. La controversia surgió debido a unas pruebas que se le hicieron a la mantilla original, la cual según la historia, Juan Diego presentó como evidencia de las apariciones ante el poder eclesiástico. Uno de los investigadores puso en tela de juicio la autenticidad de la mantilla. Las apariciones de “la Virgen María” siempre han sido puestas en duda, lo mismo sucedió en Fátima, Portugal y con la Virgen de Lourdes en Francia. Como creyente en la Virgen de Guadalupe, considero las
apariciones como sucesos reales. La Virgen se ha aparecido en diversas partes del mundo, se le ha revelado a seres humanos selectos y de corazón puro, para que por medio de ellos, el mensaje de luz que ella dicta, sea propagado entre los pueblos. Los diversos nombres de la Virgen María alrededor del mundo se deben al nombre que se les da a las diferentes advocaciones. La aparición de la Virgen en México a principios del siglo XVI, tuvo una apariencia mestiza, porque la madre del Redentor quería que la nueva raza que se estaba forjando en el nuevo mundo, le recibiera como mensajera del cielo, de ese modo las nuevas generaciones se iniciaran en el culto Mariano y al mismo tiempo los indígenas, dejaran de adorar a los dioses paganos. La Virgen de Guadalupe se apareció por primera vez al indio Juan Diego, en el Cerrito del Tepeyac, el 9 de diciembre de 1531, pidiendo que en ese lugar se levantara un templo en su honor. El obispo de ese entonces, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, recibió la noticia con mucha reserva. Posteriormente el 12 de diciembre la Virgen volvió a aparecerse y le pidió al indio que recogiera las rosas que brotarían en el cerro. Juan Diego las recogió, las colocó
en su ayate y fue y las mostró al Frayle como prueba de la aparición. Cuando el indio desdobló su ayate, la imagen de la Virgen de la Concepción estaba plasmada en la túnica. Y fue así como el Frayle y los demás prelados de la iglesia fueron testigos de aquel milagro. La Virgen de Guadalupe fue coronada canónicamente el 12 de octubre de 1895 por el Papa León XIII. Son también notables los santuarios a la Virgen de Guadalupe en Cáceres, España y en San Salvador, El Salvador, lugar en donde también se apareció la Virgen Morena en 1953, por lo que se le edificó una hermosa basílica. San Juan Diego fue finalmente canonizado en el año 2002 por el Papa Juan Pablo II, convirtiéndose así, en el primer Santo de origen indígena. El nombre de la advocación Guadalupe, proviene de la palabra nahuatl “Coatlaxope”,que significa <<la que aplastó la serpiente>>. Con el paso del tiempo la palabra se castellanizó a Guadalupe. La Virgen Morena, La Sagrada Virgen de Guadalupe, es la Reina de México y Emperatriz de América y las Islas Filipinas.

“Ho, ho, ho!” What is Your Christmas Outfit Really Saying About You?
Juan Carlos Miranda SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR Office parties, friend’s parties, family gatherings, it seems that everyone and their grandma are having some type of celebration for Christmas. Oh what a joyous time to spend with family, friends and coworkers bickering at the most petty stuff. Come on, I know most of you do it, don’t lie to yourselves. It’s this season that I find it to be the most fascinating of them all, when everyone dresses in their most glamorous duds (or so they think) for the many holiday parties they get invited to. Now, if you don’t want to be the one person people are going to be talking about for all the wrong reasons, then follow my simple advice and do your homework before stepping out the door looking like a Christmas tree. When it comes to holiday parties the same philosophy applies as to everyday wear, “DRESS TO IMPRESS.” If you don’t feel good wearing what you’re wearing, you will not look good wearing it either. Simple as that. Choosing the right ensemble depends on what type of party you’re attending. If it’s an office party you have to make sure you look your best without going the slutty route. Don’t give your bitchy coworkers one more reason to hate on you. Whether you’re on the skinny or more voluptuous side, opt for a dress that says “I’m classy and sexy, eat your heart out bitches!” As far as color goes, nothing says ‘sexy hot’ more than red. If you have small breasts go for a plunging neckline, skinny girls can get away with this type of dress. If you have large puppies then don’t show them as much. Opt for a peplum dress to take attention away from your chest. Remember that you don’t want the wrong type of atten-
tion. Family gatherings are more lax. You can pretty much wear whatever you feel like because, no matter what you put on, your siblings are going to grill you no matter what. So just put on whatever makes you feel good and comfortable and take a chill pill. Family gatherings are meant to be enjoyed with your loved ones no matter how annoying you might find them to be. One thing you will definitely need is the best accessory of them all, your smile. Friend’s Christmas gatherings are a whole different beast, or should I say Grinch? Stick to your style and dress to feel comfortable and to impress. Your friends are just as judgmental as your enemies; the only difference is that your friends will tell you what they really think straight to your face. So avoid crazy outfits and Santa hats, leave those for the kids, grab a fancy scarf and nice coat and arrive in style. Command attention as soon as you step into the party and wear your nicest casual clothes, yes casual. Friend’s parties are usually at a house therefore giv-
ing you the liberty of dressing more relaxed. Also, if you overdress you’ll stand out from the rest like a sore thumb and people will think of you as a stuck up a-hole. So put on a nice pair of jeans and some killer pumps with a sparkly top and party the night away in the company of your good friends. If all fails and you still have no idea of what to wear, it doesn’t hurt to hire someone that will give you great advice and will help you find the great outfit—preferably someone who doesn’t know you. Hiring a stylist doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money. There are many stylists out there that will give you a great rate and will help you figure out what looks good on you without making a hole in your wallet. The best part when hiring a stylist is that they know what they’re doing and they’ll work with you to find the perfect style for you. Here is my Christmas present to you.
