Ojalá estos vientos de cambio y una política de salud consistente e igualitaria ayuden a despejar los temores y la desconfianza en momentos que restablecerla es más importante que nunca. e are still more than a month away from the change of powers in the United States, which takes place every four years at noon on January 20, and it is already possible to perceive the smells and colors of the approaching change in the environment. It is a change that can be seen in the new tone - serious, measured, reflective - of the public discourse of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice Presi-
But beneath the surface and from the faces, it is clear that a new order of public policy priorities is looming, with a new emphasis on tackling the structural inequalities that affect the most vulnerable among us, including our minorities. In her first message as the first woman to be nominated for Secretary of the Treasury, former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen spoke of the disproportionate impact that the pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis have had on the poorest, with loss of life, jobs, businesses and of the difficulties to cover the cost of the mortgage or the rent.
For her part, the one appointed by the president to occupy the Office of Programming and Budget of the White House, Neera Tanden, daughter of immigrants from India, referred to the strategic importance that social programs play in opening opportunities for improvement for millions of lowincome people.
I agree with those who believe that the common thread of the words and designations of Joe Biden's next government is the fight against income inequality that has generated a series of chronic distortions, obviously exposed by the pandemic, with a balance tragic for the most vulnerable population.

According to cybersecurity experts at CompTIA, a good first step is to check how old your equipment is, whether it’s your own, rented or leased from an internet service provider. Routers, modems, switches, access points or any other device hooked up to the home network should be less than five years old. Anything older should be replaced because its built-in security protections are woefully outdated. Strong passwords are critical throughout your home, starting with your Wi-Fi network. Don’t name your home network “try and hack me” or include personal information in the network name. You don’t want to call any attention to yourself via the network name. Be sure to check the encryption level for your home wireless network. At the very minimum you want the encryption option set to WPA2. 70 40 40 3 10 25 50 Factory-installed default passwords and settings on digital equipment are an open invitation to hackers. matter of balancing security and convenience. While simpler passwords are easier to remember, they’re less secure. On the other hand, you don’t want to make them so complicated you’ll have trouble remembering them. Set passwords to something that’s a little challenging, but that you’ll remember. Whenever you receive notification about a security patch or software update, make sure you install them right away. Companies make these updates available when they discover bugs to fix or security holes to fill. It’s a good practice to have your router and other devices set to automatic updates so the latest security patches and software updates are installed soon after becoming available. About 1,100 institutions nationwide are contributing to the Opportunity America survey on workforce development. California Community College System Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley said "upskilling" will be crucial to an equitable recovery from the pandemic. "It isn't high-wage-earning, white-collar workers that have been impacted. It is blue-collar, front-line vulnerable workers at the lowest level that have been hit the hardest," Oakley said. "And these are individuals that community colleges have the greatest access to."
Colleges are being asked to complete the survey this month. Tamar Jacoby, president of the nonprofit Opportunity America, said she hopes the data will convince state lawmakers to allocate more for career education. "The problem is, you have millions of Americans wanting these short, job-focused programs that the colleges are well positioned to provide, but in many states there's no way to pay," Jacoby said. "You can't use your Pell grant to pay for them. Most states do not fund them." Salvatrice Cummo, executive director for economic and workforce development with Pasadena Community College, advises people looking for work to consider short-term community college courses that can lead directly to jobs in such hot industries as healthcare and computer science. "Sit with the counselor and take a look at the programs that best fit your desires and interests and career path," Cummo said. "And have them share with you, what are the growth occupations?" Cummo noted many of California's 116 community colleges now offer competency-based credentials that are designed to funnel graduates into fields that are in demand. Support for this reporting was provided by Lumina Foundation.

ACRAMENTO, Calf. -With the prospect of a new Biden administration on the horizon, California groups that advocate for education reform are hoping for big changes in 2021. states, so that school districts have adequate PPE and staff for cleaning, for substitute teachers," Honowitz said. Much depends on an election outcome far from California -- the U.S. Senate runoff in Georgia in early January, which could flip the Senate to Democratic control. President-elect Biden, whose wife Jill is a community college professor, has called for two years of free community college and four years of free tuition at state universities for low-income families. In addition, he's said he wants to cancel some student debt and institute universal kindergarten.
Honowitz said he'd like to see the Department of Education revive civil rights and equity issues that got some traction under President Barack Obama, but have either been sidetracked or scuttled over the past four years. "There's a lot of things that got eliminated under Trump -- things like addressing suspension and expulsion disparities, social-emotional learning, school-based mental health," he said. Honowitz also believes workers' rights have been eroded in the last few years, and said he expects Biden to pursue a more collaborative approach to labor-management issues.

The project started in 2017, and Nepal used early traditional as well as new technologies to measure the heights.
The new height is 86 cm (2.82 feet) less than the widely accepted 8,848 meters, measured by India in 1955.
The Chinese team started surveying Everest with the BeiDou navigation satellite system of China last year.
But for China, the mountain, which straddles the border between Nepal and Tibet at the crest of the Himalayan mountain chain, measured 8,844.43 meters. Mount Everest is known in Nepali as Sagarmatha and Tibetan as Chomolungma. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi from Beijing and his Nepalese counterpart Pradeep Kumar Gyawali from Kathmandu announced the height of the peak in a joint virtual event streamed live.
Nepal’s survey team led by Khim Lal Gautam climbed Everest on May 22, 2019 and installed GPS equipment and ground-penetrating radar at the summit.
It was during a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping in October last year that Nepal and China agreed to announce the measurement jointly. The Survey of India first measured the height in a project that continued from 1849 and 1855. The surveyors made observations from the Dehradun base to the Sonakhoda base in Bihar. The peak was not recognized as the tallest mountain in the world then.
It is the first time the two countries agreed on the height of Everest to end the debate about how high the roof of the world is.
Surveyors employed trigonometric calculations to measure the height of what was known as "Peak XV."
With this joint announcement, the friendship between the two countries will reach "new heights," said officials of the two countries who participated in the event.
They set the mean computed height of the peak at 29,002 feet (8839.8 meters).
It was a symbolic reference to the growing closer ties between the two countries that India, Beijing's regional rival, views with concern. “For Nepal, this is indeed a special moment for all of us. Mount Sagarmatha Chomolangma has remained an eternal symbol of good relationship and continued friendship between Nepal and China,” minister Gyawali. The height of Everest has never been precise. It was measured for the first time in 1849 by the British. Nepal had announced in 2011 to measure the height of the mountain in a “national pride” project, but it could not take off because of political instability and a lack of

The peak got its name after Sir George Everest, the British geographer and ex surveyor-general of India, who led the team of surveyors. In 2005, the Chinese Bureau of Topography and Cartography recalculated the peak using GPS and radar equipment and established its height almost four meters less than the widely recognized one. China had previously measured the mountain only up to its rock height. The Nepalese argued the snow on top of the summit should also be measured. The altitude agreement also settles the doubts that the mountain height may have changed due to the impact of the 2015 earthquake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale. The quake killed more than 9,000 people, including 19 on Everest.

“En el siglo XXI, el éxito de las causas ambientales se basará en nuestra capacidad para transformarnos en organizaciones y movimientos más justos, inclusivos y relevantes”, concluye Jiménez de Green 2.0. his issue was in the news recently when 13 current and former staffers from the National Audubon Society, a leading environmental non-profit, spoke out against the organization’s management for maintaining “a culture of retaliation, fear and antagonism toward women and people of color.” One employee who quit voiced his perceptions of an uncomfortable reaction in the mainly white and male executive board when issues surrounding the lack of women and people of color came up. David Yarnold, President and CEO of Audubon, has rebutted the claims and has brushed off any responsibility for the actions and behaviors that people have attributed to him around issues of diversity. “Audubon is not the first environmental organization to face allegations of racial inequity and most likely will not be the last,” says Andrés Jimenez, Executive Director of Green 2.0, a non-profit dedicated to increasing racial diversity within green groups. “The responsibility of creating a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion falls on the leadership of every organization,” he adds. “It should never be the burden of employees of color to have to fight uphill battles and face intimidation or harassment in order to accomplish something as fundamental as equal treatment and transparent processes for accountability.” Dorceta Taylor’s 2014 study The State of Diversity in Environmental Organizations detailed bias along gender, racial, and class lines within 293 environmental groups. Key findings included that men were still more likely than women to occupy powerful positions in environmental organizations, and that while significant progress had been made on gender diversity, the gains had mostly gone to white women. Additionally, the state of racial diversity was lagging far behind gender diversity. “Homogeneous workplaces arise because of adherence to particular cultural norms, filtering, network structure and recruitment practices,” reported Taylor. “These are forms of unconscious or inadvertent biases that can lead to or perpetuate institutional homogeneity.” In the intervening years since Taylor’s landmark study, several environmental groups have made strides toward becoming more inclusive and diverse. To wit, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) has implemented training workshops on im-

plicit bias. Meanwhile, the Wilderness Society’s innovative “Urban to Wild” program works to make nature more accessible to city dwellers and people of color in urban communities. Additionally, the group has been working to increase racial and ethnic diversity through paid internships. Another example is the Resources Legacy Fund (RLF), which moved its base to a bigger city and expanded its outreach to local schools and colleges in order to attract staff from more diverse backgrounds. And it’s not your granddaddy’s Sierra Club anymore: The environmental group that started it all back in 1892 recently adopted a comprehensive Multi-Year Equity Plan and Workplan Guidance. “In the 21st century, the success of environmental causes will be based on our ability to transform into more just, inclusive and relevant organizations and movements,” concludes Green 2.0’s Jimenez. "RAINBOW WAVE" OF LGBTQ LAWMAKERS TO PRESS FOR CHANGE

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The 2020 election is notable for the so-called "rainbow wave" of LGBTQ lawmakers elected for the first time, in California and across the country. For example, Todd Gloria is the first LGBTQ person and the first person of color to be elected mayor of San Diego, Susan Eggman from the Central Valley will be the first LGBTQ Latina to serve in the California state Senate, and Alex Lee from San Jose has said he's honored to become the first openly bisexual member of the State Assembly. "There's a lot of things you'd assume that would have already been accomplished by 2020 that haven't been done, even in California," Lee said. "And so, I hope to encourage more young, queer people of color to run for office and make their own history in California." In addition, Christie Holstege, the new mayor of Palm Springs, is the first openly bisexual mayor in the country, and Delaware elected Sarah McBride as the first openly "trans" state senator in the nation. The number of LGBTQ members to serve in the next Congress is the highest ever. The United States still, however, has a long way to go before the percentage of people in government who identify as LGBTQ matches that of the general population. Samuel Garrett-Pate, communications director for the group Equality California, noted that while the Biden administration supports passage of the Equality Act, true progress will require more than providing basic legal protections. "It's going to take investment in LGBTQ students in our schools," he said. "It's going to take a real commitment to ending the epidemic of violence against trans-
gender women. And it's going to take working together to end the HIV epidemic, which is going into its 40th year next year." Garrett-Pate added that Equality California hopes to make progress by electing more LGBTQ people and allies. To that end, the group's Leadership Academy works to recruit and train candidates for public office.

acramento – The California Department of Motor Vehicles is temporarily suspending behind-the-wheel driving tests for at least two weeks beginning December 14. The DMV is taking this step for the health and safety of customers and employees during the current statewide surge in COVID-19 cases. “Behind-the-wheel drive tests require two people to share space in one vehicle and – while we have made numerous changes to safeguard the testing process – the current surge in COVID-19 cases presents increased risk to both parties,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “While our field offices remain open to serve the public, we hope customers will first go online to take care of their DMV needs.” In-vehicle testing is a requirement for first-time driver’s license holders and commercial license applicants. The temporary suspension includes commercial and noncommercial tests but does not apply to motorcycle drive tests, which can be conducted at a safe distance. Customers with scheduled appointments in the next two weeks will be notified their tests are canceled. The DMV will automatically reschedule the tests at a later date. DMV drive test examiners will be redirected to assist with other customer transactions. The DMV previously suspended drive tests for three months beginning in mid-March. The DMV resumed administering behind-the-wheel tests in June with safety protocols in place, including required face coverings, temperature checks, cracked windows for increased air circulation and seat covers. The DMV continues to recommend that customers use its online services at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/ portal/dmv-online/, expanded virtual services and other service channels to complete transactions including eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. AN JOSE, CA – While the pandemic has been tough on everybody, there are certainly those who have been hit harder than others. VTA employees dug deep to raise a whopping $20,716 during its annual Thanksgiving drive to benefit Second Harvest of Silicon Valley! Of more than 300 teams in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties raising money during this campaign, VTA was among the top five fundraisers. VTA has a longstanding tradition of raising awareness of poverty and hunger in Santa Clara County through employee donations. With the pandemic doubling the need for food and volunteer opportunities, many employees also pitched in their time to help Second Harvest sort and distribute food in the community. “We are fortunate to work for a great company like VTA and are able to have what we need and also a few things we want, but we can’t forget about those who don’t even have what they need,” said Lucas Perez, a customer service supervisor who has been instrumental in increasing VTA’s participation over the years through friendly competition between de-
“This is my way of giving back to the community. I’ve told my co-workers my story, this is why I push it. I also came to find out that other people had similar experiences and knew where I was coming from,” she said. Nguyen says creating intradepartmental competition among the different segments of workers at her yard is key to making Cerone competitive with the other VTA sites. She even collected funds from coworkers and then donated online for them because she said a lot of people either don’t like to give online or might not get to it. But she is quick to deflect credit to herself, saying it is more about “Team Cerone” and the willingness of her colleagues to donate. This year, in lieu of barrels around VTA’s five campuses to collect nonperishable food items, Second Harvest provided a donation portal for online giving. VTA set an internal goal to raise $10,000 among our 2,100 employees, and the goal was exceeded by more than double. VTA’s contributions will help Second Harvest provide 41,432 meals this holiday season. Second Harvest has seen the demand for food assistance double to 500,000 people a month since the start of the pandemic. Their donation collection does not end with the holidays, as the need exists all year round.

ico or Colorado." Ten states, including Texas, currently have abortion "trigger laws," meaning abortion bans or restrictions that are unenforceable now but designed to go into effect if constitutional precedent changes. Brandi Collins-Calhoun, senior movement engagement associate for the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, noted abortion rights activists across the nation projected a post-Roe world since the appointment of anti-abortion justice Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.

USTIN, Texas -- New Mexico and Colorado are likely to become major destinations for Texas women seeking an abortion if the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the 1973 Roe versus Wade decision.
Aimee Arrambide, executive director for NARAL Pro-Choice Texas said women there already had a preview of what future abortion access could look like when the governor and attorney general used COVID-19 quarantine measures to block access to abortion care under the guise of public health.

"And formar sobre problemas de salud, problemas de what we saw is an increase in Texans traveling to inmigrantes, salud reproductiva y problemas de laT:10.5" states where it was more accessible, like New Mexmujer.
"We've been using language around when Roe gets overturned because it's something that has always seemed inevitable to us," Collins-Calhoun remarked. "But now it's certain that it's going to happen." Arrambide contended the Texas Legislature is controlled by anti-abortion legislators who don't acknowledge what severe restrictions will mean for women's access to health care. "One in four people will have an abortion in our lifetime, but because of the stigma surrounding abortion, that's not really front and center," Arrambide asserted. "The anti-abortion people use the word abortion four-to-one times more than our side does, and I think that helps contribute to the stigma." Arturo Hilario El Observador “Wander Darkly” is a twisting and surreal tale of love and grief where a couple, Adrienne (Sienna Miller) and Matteo (Diego Luna), embark on a journey of self-reflection as they weave through the memories of their relationship after a car accident leaves them in a strange state of being. Writer/director Tara Miele based the story on her own experience of being involved in a traumatic car accident and the reflections of life she and her husband had afterwards. Recently I had the opportunity to chat with the two leads of the film, Diego Luna and Sienna Miller, about their experiences working together and finding chemistry in their collaboration, to the parts of the poetic-like narrative they connected to most. “Wander Darkly” is out now on streaming platforms. To start off, I just wanted to know which aspects of the story and themes did each of you personally connect with most? Sienna For me, the idea of being able to go back, I think the thing that I find most interesting about life in general is the connection between people and really my obsession about being a human is to do with love. And what that is, it feels so elusive and so fascinating and so overbearing and beautiful and painful and like I'm obsessed with that that thing that exists. And so, the concept of being a couple who are kind of on the wrong track together, going back to the inception of that relationship and examining the moments where you pivoted and went wrong, the little things that you miscommunicated over, the little kind of corrosive things that happened that sent you on the wrong track. The idea, the concept of going back and looking at that with somebody was just beautiful to me. I'd love to do that in real life. That was what got me. Diego To me, I guess, I mean. Also, the honesty that the script has to talk about, the challenges of our relationship, the challenges of parenthood, the challenges of how this is dynamic, you know, it gets dramatically confronted when the most beautiful thing that can happen to you happens, you know? And I think that's really interesting. How when you're supposed to be reaching the top in terms
of love - it's a moment where the most is expected out of you and how much you can boycott yourself and how much or how little we understand, you know, how to perform that task, that at the same time is so natural. It's a very interesting film to watch because it somehow reminds you that whatever you've gone through can't be that wrong, that we all are confronted [with] actually not knowing what's best and just making one mistake after another. And it was nice to exercise that and through Matteo, get the guilt out, you know, in a way. How was it working with each other in terms of creating the chemistry for that relationship on screen? Can you talk about that for a little bit, please? Sienna I feel like it's nothing you can really work towards. You either have it or you don't. The fortunate thing, I think with Diego and I, we've been friends on and off for a while, we've known each other. We kind of grown up together in that town of the film industry of Hollywood, and we both come from a theater background. And this film felt very much like a play in many ways. Like it was it was a real leap of faith, it was very surreal. It took it needed people who were willing to kind of jump and try things and be brave in a way that you just sort of have to do when you were rehearsing a play, that probably helped. But I think if I'd been with a male actor, you had a massive ego or a load of arrogance or kind of narcissism, and that does exist in that town, I don't know that it would have worked. Because there was so much vulnerability from both sides that it just it took someone who just was available and open, and Diego is that. Diego I feel kind of the same. You know, if I think about the choice, it's the most dangerous choice probably I've done professionally, obviously. But being next to someone you can trust; someone you can open up to and really show what you're feeling and who you are. It's the only way to transit through a process like this. And I guess that was essential. So, besides the chemistry you see there, it's like the chemistry behind every decision, the necessity of holding someone's hand and saying, "Yeah, right? You should do this to keep going, are we in this together?" It was it was beautiful to experience because that's what filmmaking should be about, it's the collaboration that matters.

omestic violence has spiked alarmingly as victims are trapped at home with their abusers amid lockdown orders during the COVID pandemic. At the same time, traditional safety nets have largely been shut down, according to a panel of experts speaking at an EMS news briefing Dec. 3. Citing a recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine, panelists noted that one out of every four women in the U.S. and one in 10 men are currently facing abuse from a spouse or intimate partner. Financial stressors — including job loss, unemployment, housing instability, and greater labor burdens as children remain at home instead of going to school – have contributed to the increase. Black and Native American women are at greater risk for being killed by domestic violence, panelists said, while Black and brown people are less likely to call police in DV situations because of distrust of law enforcement. Domestic violence hotlines have seen a drop in calls as victims cannot find safe spaces from which to make calls. Shelters are closed or operating at full capacity, and thereby cannot take on new clients. And many courts and law enforcement agencies have severely restricted the scope of their operations since the start of the pandemic.
Chandra also noted that the Administration has let lapse the Violence Against Women Act, authored in 1994 by then Senator Joe Biden. The Act, which must be re-authorized every five years by Congress, has been credited with a 60 percent drop in domestic violence between the years 1994 and 2010. Fawn Jade Korr, senior staff attorney with Bay Area Legal Aid, spoke about how law enforcement and the legal system often fail victims of abuse, particularly women of color. Responses by judges and law enforcement officers differ depending on the ethnicity of the survivor, she stated. “Who is the survivor? Is she a white woman asking for protection? Or is she a woman of color? Is she someone from a culture who is not comfortable talking about sexual abuse in open court in front of a bunch of mail judicial officers? Or is it a black woman whose credibility is always going to be questioned more sharply?” questioned Korr, also stating that for those without legal representation, “the barriers can be insurmountable.” The court system and law enforcement have been failing survivors because of a lack of adequate implicit bias training in law enforcement, said Korr. “I think it’s really important for all police officers to be able to give culturally sensitive responses to survivors of domestic violence,” she said, noting that undocumented people and newer immigrants are going to feel uncomfortable sharing the details of their abuse with police. Most of her clients don’t feel support from the police when they call to report a violation of a temporary restraining order by the abuser, or for help in getting him out of the home, stated Korr. Bias must also be neutralized when survivors enter the courtroom, she said, noting that these are ongoing issues not specific to COVID, but critical to successfully enabling survivors of domestic violence. Other speakers at the Dec. 4 briefing included HaNhi Tran, deputy district attorney in the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, and Johanna Thai Van Dat, staff attorney at the Santa Clara County’s Family Law Facilitator’s Office/Self Help Center. Tran and Van Dat noted that Santa Clara County – home of Silicon Valley — has dramatically shifted its services so that victims of domestic violence can continue to easily access services. The County has severely restricted the number of people who can come to court, but victims can still appear for proceedings via video or phone calls. DV advocates have expressed concern that, during the pandemic, victims cannot often find a safe place, out of earshot of their abuser, to participate in legal remedies via video or phone. Tran said in Santa Clara County, victims can get help from victims’ advocates at the District Attorney’s office, who will book a conference room at which the survivor can safely listen to court proceedings and advocate for herself. Tran said criminal proceedings against an abuser begin when police are called to the scene, sometimes by the victim, or often by a neighbor or family member. “Even in the midst of shelter in place, victims are still able to call the police to seek help, and criminal cases are still being filed and heard in criminal court. And that’s because the police, the DA’s office, and criminal court are essential services which have been allowed to remain open.” A no contact restraining order removes the abuser from the home until the case is heard. A peaceful contact order allows the offender to remain in the home, but they cannot physically or verbally abuse the victim in any way. For a civil restraining order, police need not be involved, explained Van Dat, adding that such types of orders can also be used in cases of abused elders or adult dependents. Civil restraining orders last until the case is heard. A victim’s legal status is never asked about, she said. “I remind people about the operational impact of domestic violence: children who grow up witnessing abuse often times become perpetrators or abuser perpetrators and victims themselves. We need to break that cycle of generational violence,” said Van Dat.
