Unfortunately, there is a high percentage of members of these vulnerable communities who still have high levels of skepticism about the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine, despite the fact that its use has been officially authorized.

Es una responsabilidad individual, pero también, un compromiso colectivo con la humanidad. othing better to rekindle hope than images of the first nurses, doctors, and hospital support staff being vaccinated against COVID-19. It is, without a doubt, an extraordinary success of science to have managed to develop, in just a few months, highly effective and, as far as we know, safe vaccines to combat one of the most serious threats against humanity in modern history. This is a breakthrough with a significant potential impact on the communities that have been most disproportionately affected by the pandemic. I'm talking about the essential worker community

Although some surveys show an increase in the levels of public acceptance of vaccines since they were authorized by the federal government, others reflect that there is a need for a strong public awareness campaign to eliminate the doubts that still prevail among communities of color. An AP / NORD survey clearly shows the dimensions of the problem. Only 34% of the Latino community plan to get vaccinated against the coronavirus at this time. The distrust of the African American community is even greater: only 24% of this community is willing to get the vaccine, despite the fact that it is already available. Comparatively, 53% of non-Hispanic whites in the United States expressed their intention to get vaccinated when their turn comes. The acceptance gap is worrisome because the communities least inclined to get vaccinated are the ones that currently face not only the highest number of cases and hospitalizations but also deaths. This is another perfect storm in the United States public health system.

To complicate matters, the survey shows a low level of trust in the general population towards their political leaders, the media, and pharmaceutical companies. Fortunately, there is a high level of trust in healthcare professionals. I dare say that the same sense of priority given to the development of vaccines must be applied to persuading the most vulnerable communities, that it’s in their personal and collective benefit to get vaccinated in a timely manner.

If we also add the historical distrust that some of these communities feel towards the federal government and towards the health system, it is evident that we have before us a serious public health challenge.

Medical science perpetually seeks a balance between risks and benefits. In the case of COVID-19 vaccines, I have no doubt that the latter trumps the former. Personally, I wait for my turn to get vaccinated, hopefully most are thinking similarly. It is an individual responsibility, but also a collective commitment to humanity. ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- New data shows the pandemic has had crushing effects - especially on California's parents and children. A report released on December 14 from the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows in the Golden State, 15% of parents are struggling to put food on the table, 20% don't know if they'll be able to pay the rent or mortgage next month, and 12% have no health insurance. Ted Lempert, president at the group Children Now, said that instability combined with school shutdowns has been particularly hard on children of color. "So many kids are feeling down, depressed, hopeless. And some serious mental-health issues are increasing," Lempert said. California is notorious for having very few school counselors relative to the huge student population. Gov. Gavin Newsom is set to release his 2021 budget proposal in the first week of January. At a minimum, child advocates want the governor to abandon education cuts, known as deferrals, that were promised for 2021 in order to balance the 2020 budget.

"All children, in good times and in bad, should have their basic needs met," Boissiere said. "Children should not be hungry. They should have safe, secure housing. They should have access to quality education. Parents should have access to child care so that they can work to support those families." Boissiere also would like a federal commitment to put racial and ethnic equity first in the COVID-19 response efforts. "If you look at food security, 14% of households reported that they didn't have enough food to eat," she said. "When you compare that to African Americans, it's 23%, so almost double, and 19% for Latinos, compared to 9% for Asians and 10% of whites." The report also calls for the vaccine to be made available to all, at little-to-no cost.

They'd also like to see more subsidies for child care. Leslie Boissiere, vice president of external affairs with the Casey Foundation, said policymakers must work to head off a looming foreclosure crisis and expand access to unemployment insurance for gig and part-time workers.

BBB SAYS DON’T LET THE GRINCH STEAL YOUR CHRISTMAS

OS ANGELES & SAN JOSE – Online shopping has never been more popular. It’s easier and safer to stay at home and shop from your computer, tablet or phone. For all of its convenience, however, online shopping puts you at greater risk of identity theft, so the Better Business Bureau has some tips that could save you thousands of dollars and lots of headaches. “We’ve said it before but it bears repeating: scammers have upped their game during the pandemic, and that includes finding more ways to steal your identity,” says Steve McFarland, President & CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Los Angeles & Silicon Valley. “If you give your credit or debit card info to a unsecure site, they can steal your card number and use it to make purchases – or even open up other financial accounts using your identity.” BBB has these tips to help consumers prevent fraud when shopping online: • Shop at home using your private Wi-Fi network. Hackers can get into public Wi-Fi networks and steal your information. • Check the URL. If it starts with “http” it’s not a secure site. Make sure the URL starts with “https.” There should be a lock symbol in the address bar, too. • Use a credit card. Your card issuer offers protections and an easy way to get your money back. If a hacker gets hold of your debit card info those funds will be automatically deducted from your bank account until the issue is resolved. • Use your card's security features. Some credit cards have special features like a temporary virtual card number. If it’s compromised, you just cancel it and inform your issuer. Also ask if you can set up alerts for suspicious activity. • If you’re buying a gift card online, buy only from known sellers. Even better, it’s safer to buy gift cards in the store. • If you’re using a gift card while buying online, be very careful and make sure you’re doing business with trusted sellers. Otherwise, you have little recourse for a refund. If you think your identity has been stolen during a transaction: • File a report with the Federal Trade Commission and with your local police. • Let your card issuer know right away.

WHY WHITE VOTERS CHOSE TRUMP: THEY FEEL LIKE A MINORITY GROUP IN AMERICA SUNITA SOHRABJI Ethnic Media Services

W

hite voters, who overwhelmingly chose Donald Trump in his re-election bid, say they feel disenfranchised in a new America which prioritizes other races over their own. According to exit poll data, three out of five white voters voted for Trump, baffling pollsters who believed the Administration’s record during Trump’s tenure would handily oust him from office. Almost 45 percent of college educated white women also voted for Trump, according to exit poll data. In total, 74 million people voted for Trump, who, on Dec. 12, lost his re-election bid after the electoral college declared a win for Democratic contender Joe Biden, who won more than 81 million votes. Arlie Hochschild, professor of sociology at UC Berkeley, has surveyed the Trump landscape for the past five years, ever since the businessman announced his bid for office on June 16, 2015, descending a golden escalator at Trump Towers in Manhattan. The renowned sociologist spoke of her current research with blue collar workers in Appalachia, a very low-income, primarily white rural area in Eastern Kentucky. The coal-mining industry, which provides the majority of jobs in the region, is in deep decline as the U.S. moves towards greener energy sources.

Those who voted were not reflective of the polity at large, said Romero, noting that voters who do turn out tend to be older, wealthier, and white, and more educated. “Whites are always over-represented amongst voters,” said Romero.

ally getting 1ahead.’”

But in Appalachia, a different sort of Trump supporter emerges: white people who believe they are a minority in their own country as they watch other ethnic groups eclipse them economically.

“There’s a sense of being left out,” she said, adding: “They feel colonized by liberal culture, which says whites are bad: they are racist. And men are bad: they are rapists.”

“They actually feel that life is rigged against them,” said Hochschild, noting that these voters get their picture of reality from Fox News, and CNN or MSNBC on rare occasions.

“They feel like a minority group that is in decline, and they feel that people of color are rising while they are declining,” said Hochschild. She noted the anomaly: the economics of Black and Latinx households have largely been on a downward trajectory over the past decade.

“They see that people of color are newscasters. They see black football stars and basketball stars getting multi-million dollar deals to advertise stuff. And they think ‘Wow they're millionaires or billionaires. Gosh. Those blacks are re-

In comparison to white voters, majorities of Black, Latino, Asian and Native American voters rejected Trump by large margins and turned

out in force, helping defeat the incumbent President. Davin Phoenix, assistant professor of political science at UC Irvine, sees Trump´s persistent support among most whites as a “doubling down” effect of anger that the President has used to keep his base active. “There´s this expectation that is not founded that maybe white Americans, specifically white women, would move away from Trump,” Phoenix said. “But what did Trump very effectively do throughout those four years? Continue to engender and activate that sense of anger.” “Trump has been normalized and kind of the ethos

or the mythos of Trump supporters has been normalized,” he said, noting that the President not only polarized the country on race and ethnicity, but also on gender, religion, and socio-economic status. The dividing lines also served to alienate Democratic factions from each other, said Phoenix, author of “The Anger Gap: How Race Shapes Emotion in Politics.” Although this election saw the highest turnout in a presidential election in the last 120 years, almost half of all eligible voters — 85 million people — did not turn out for the critical election. Thus, Trump received just 31 percent of all possible

At a Dec. 11 briefing organized by Ethnic Media Services, Hochschild said the stereotype of a Trump voter is the guy with the red Make America Great Again, pumping his fist in the air. Other images that come to her mind include Mark and Patricia McCloskey of St. Louis, Missouri, who brandished guns outside their home in June as Black Lives Matters protesters marched by; the McCloskeys went on to speak at the Republican

Even in California, which prides itself on being unabashedly Blue, Trump amassed 5.5 million votes, the most of any Republican Presidential candidate ever. Overall, Trump received 47 percent of the white vote in California, while Biden received 51 percent, a scant four percent margin in a very progressive state, noted Romero. “Many of those that opposed Trump in this election cannot fathom why anyone would vote for somebody who is trafficking in racial tropes,” said Romero, adding however that Trump supporters do not see him or his actions as racist. “His rhetoric is carefully structured. He leaves open huge pathways for people to interpret his statements.” White voters and BIPOC voters are looking at the country’s landscape from contrasting lenses, said the researcher. Whites overall less likely to recognize the existence of individual and institutional forms of racism, she said, pointing to the polarized opinions surrounding the death of Minnesota resident George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by white police officers. Romero holds an optimistic vision for the future of America. “We must all commit to fight for a better America, for an accessible and truly inclusive democracy.” “Even though Biden won, we're still faced with an incredibly underrepresented or non-represented electorate,” said Romero.

ENGLISH and experiences. This is called "Mental Health 360."

ince the pandemic began, many have felt the effects on their mental health. The CDC reported in June that over 40% of Americans suffered an adverse mental or behavioral health condition, with anxiety and depressive disorders topping the list. By mid-July, 53% of U.S. adults said their mental health was negatively impacted by stress and worry due to the pandemic, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll. As the pandemic continues, these stressors are likely to impact more people every day. Are you or your family members likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues? If so, what can you do to support your - or your loved one's - mental health? First, it helps to uncover your predisposition toward certain traits or mental conditions. Just as you might seek information about your genetic predisposition for illnesses to guide your lifestyle choices, discovering your genetic traits related to mental health can help support your emotional well-being. Thanks to a breakthrough in the translation of genetic mechanisms and traits that can influence a person's behavioral predispositions, the Genomind Mental Health Map provides a springboard anyone can use to take action toward better mental wellness. Mental health is a function of genetics, environment, lifestyle,

Dr. Scott Wiener, a board-certified psychiatrist focused on a biological based holistic approach, uses genetic information as a vital tool. "For far too long the practice of psychiatry has only utilized symptoms in the assessment of someone's mental health. Evolving science has now given us the opportunity to assess the biological causes underlying those symptoms," says Wiener. "Genomind is an essential tool in this advanced process of creating a more complete picture of mental health." Unlike some ancestry tests that have a spit tube for collection, you only supply a cheek swab sample for Genomind's test. They then analyze 38 genetic variants and influences on 29 mental health traits, resulting in a report detailing 59 possible behavioral predispositions specific to your genetic profile. Genomind provides resources and recommended actions from trusted advocacy groups to help improve your wellness and quality of life. The Genomind Mental Health Map identifies 7 Core Genetic Mental Health Capabilities: 1. Stress and anxiety 2. Mood 3. Focus and memory 4. Sleep 5. Eating behavior 6. Social behavior 7. Habits and substance use Exploring your genetic predispositions in these seven crucial areas increases your self-awareness and empowers you to take steps toward better self-care. Stress and anxiety If you are one of many who have the variant of the gene involved in stress hormone regulation (FKBP5), you may experience a heightened stress response. Knowing that this variant may contribute to your stress response allows you to target this biological mechanism to help regulate it. For example, supplements such as magnesium and/or rhodiola rosea have been shown to help. You can also try mindfulness techniques like grounding exercises and meditation. Sleep and focus Or you may find you have a variant of the gene associated with excessive brain cell signaling (CACNA1C), which can result in traits such as: * Trouble falling asleep * Moodiness * Inattentiveness You can target this mechanism with supplements shown to stabilize it, like omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium. You could also make changes in your behavior or environment, such as reevaluating your sleep habits and schedule. Memory A variant of a gene that encodes for a protein critical to brain cell growth and repair (BDNF) is associated with predispositions involving memory and stress response, which may affect your working memory and stress levels. Fortunately, BDNF levels can be boosted through exercise. People with this variant are even more likely to benefit from the brain-enhancing effects of exercise than people without it. Knowing you have this predisposition may help jump-start your exercise routine. Knowledge is power Discovering your genetic predispositions and their potential impact on your mental wellness can help you prevent problems before they develop, or reduce them if they already exist. "At Potomac Psychiatry, we have used genetic testing to evaluate over 2000 patients and have found it to be a highly effective tool to provide a patient with critically important information," says award-winning psychiatrist and author Dr. Bruce Kehr. "Understanding genetic predispositions and implementing associated epigenetic recommendations will likely result in better mental health outcomes." Knowledge of your genetic predispositions is a vital tool for boosting your overall mental health and wellbeing - especially during challenging times.

NEW ZEALAND AGREES TO CREATE TRAVEL BUBBLE WITH AUSTRALIA

ydney, Australia - New Zealand has agreed "in principle" to opening up a travel bubble with Australia early next year, the country’s prime minister announced Monday December 14, 2020. The commencement of the quarantine-free initiative is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2021, with the date to be announced in the new year, It will come "pending confirmation from the Australian Cabinet and no significant change in the circumstances of either country," Jacinda Ardern announced in the last post-Cabinet press conference for "a year nobody would have imagined." One of the criteria is 28 days free of community transmission, and contingencies in place in the event of an outbreak that may see borders closed and thousands of citizens looking to return home into managed isolation. In Australia, Health Minister Greg Hunt welcomed the plan, saying the government is "absolutely" likely to approve and that the plan is "good for Australians and it's good for New Zealanders." "We are ready to implement from our side as soon as New Zealand is ready," he said. Australia had already approved quarantine-free entry for New Zealanders into most states, and kiwis must go into state quarantine on their return home. Ardern had indicated she was not ready to open up the borders in the opposite direction, until now. "[New Zealand's decision] is the second half of the equation. We consciously opened up Australia to people coming from New Zealand because their case numbers were negligible and we knew there would come a time when our case numbers gave them confidence," Hunt said. "So this is a sign that New Zealand and Australia are not just working together, but that families can be back together in both directions. Friends can be back together in both directions." It is estimated there are around 568,000 New Zealanders living in Australia, creating a busy travel corridor between the neighboring countries – until the pandemic began and border closures kept transTasman families apart. Pre-pandemic, New Zealand also accounted for almost half of Australia's international visitor arrivals. Wellington on Saturday also agreed to create a reciprocal travel bubble with the Covid-free Cook Islands in the South Pacific, which has a free association arrangement with New Zealand, by end of March next year. It is expected to be the first to get

off the ground. Both Australia and New Zealand closed their borders in March, and have since mostly allowed only their respective residents and citizens to enter. The two governments began to explore the opening of an air corridor between the countries months ago as a measure to mitigate the economic effects of Covid-19. New Zealand has recorded 2,096 cases of Covid-19, including 25 deaths, while Australia has surpassed 28,030 cases, and 908 deaths (including 20,352 cases and 820 deaths in the state of Victoria).

FEDS DELAY LISTING MONARCH BUTTERFLY AS THREATENED SPECIES ENGLISH at Davis, said that number should be orders of magnitude higher. "The entire California population has not exceeded 30,000 for the last two winters," he said, "and it looks like this year will be even worse. They should be more like 20 million or 30 million."

ACRAMENTO, Calif. - The monarch butterfly will not be listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act for at least a few more years, the federal government announced Tuesday December 15, even though its populations have plummeted. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the monarch meets the criteria for listing, but limited resources mean other species will be listed first. Preliminary data from the annual Thanksgiving count of monarchs that overwinter on the California coast showed only 2,000 to 3,000 individuals. Dr. Arthur Shapiro, a professor of evolution and ecology at the University of California

The reasons for the decline of this iconic orangeand-black butterfly still are being studied, but the culprits include losing habitat to development, pesticides, and climate change. In addition, proliferation of parasite-prone non-native milkweeds in coastal areas may be leading the butterflies to breed early in the winter instead of the spring. Dr. Cheryl Schultz, a biology professor at Washington State University at Vancouver, was part of a team predicting three years ago that if the monarch population dropped below 30,000, the species could spiral past the extinction threshold - the point at which there are too few individuals to keep it going. However, Schultz said she remains hopeful the species can be saved. "With people working together and using the science," she said, "I think there's incredible promise, and resiliency of the monarch populations, to turn them around." For now, the monarch will remain a "candidate species" to be listed in the future as threatened. The Endangered Species Coalition is asking butterfly enthusiasts to take a stand and call for protections for the monarch and other pollinators.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

Morgan VTA Rider Since 2014

¡Saludos por las vacaciones y que tengas una astuta! he holidays are indeed a hugely wasteful time of the year, but there are many ways we can reduce our impact and still enjoy this special season.

Gift wrap is a great place to start. Much of the wrap we buy in stores can’t be recycled because of its mixture of paper with glitter, plastic, dyes, laminate and other materials, so it goes straight to the landfill after we use it once. Wrapping gifts in brown grocery bags or parcel paper makes use of an everyday item that you may already have in your home while keeping your wrapping recyclable. Cut open paper bags from the grocery store, wrap up your present like you would with any other kind of paper, and tie it up using recyclable twine, paper ribbon or a shoelace (you can even put it back in the shoe later). To decorate your gifts, use stamps and leafy embellishments to make for a cute or sophisticated look. Go out into your neighborhood to forage for flowers or shoots of leaves to slip under your ribbon or twine. Another alternative to wrapping with brown paper is wrapping your gift with a scarf (two presents in one)! The debate over which kind of Christmas tree (real or artificial) is better for the environment has been raging for a long time, but the real right answer is a live tree that you can plant in the ground outside after the holidays. If you decide to get a cut tree, look for one that’s grown sustainably and pesticide-free. Going to the closest tree farm lowers the carbon footprint of buying a tree that was imported. If you want to get an artificial tree, most experts agree that you would need to reuse it for about 18 years to keep the environmental impact lower than that of a real tree.

There are plenty of ways to decorate your home festively for the holiday seasons without being wasteful. First of all, if you already have decorations, use them! If you don’t, try DIYing your decorations this year. You can use recycled paper or salt dough to make ornaments for your tree, and collect branches, holly, and leaves outside to create a wreath to hang on your door. Additionally, if you enjoy advent calendars for the month of December, try investing in a reusable wooden one this year so that you can fill it up with your own favorite treats, toys, or surprises for years to come. It’s also important to be conscious consumers while we shop for holiday gifts. Be sure to think (and think again) before buying something this season. Try to buy long-lasting gifts and shop at small, sustainable and/or local businesses to make your shopping greener. Etsy is a great place to find small businesses that sell ethical and sustainable products. Finally, if you enjoy unwrapping your creative side over the holidays, making your own gifts (upcycling thrifted clothes, jams or chutneys, knitting, painting, pickling or whatever you want to do) is another way to reduce waste. Cheers for the holidays, and have a crafty one! ARTFORD, Conn.

ARTFORD, Conn. -- Workers' rights groups are hopeful Congress will pass a $900 billion COVID relief bill but said it's just a first step.

The bill reportedly includes a direct stimulus payment to needy families and billions to facilitate distribution of the vaccine and help struggling businesses and the unemployed stay afloat. Megan Fountain, coordinator of advocacy and partnerships for Unidad Latina en Accion said help can't come soon enough. "The food lines are long, the jobs are scarce and COVID is reaching the peak of a second wave," Fountain cautioned. "So things are very dire. " The compromise bill is a far cry from the $2 trillion HEROES Act proposed by Democrats, which would have sent billions to shore up state budgets and avoid cuts to social services.

Republicans ended up dropping their demand for COVID liability protections for businesses. Fountain said essential workers, like those who clean our hospitals or stock grocery shelves, need more protections, not fewer, during the pandemic.
