ME RRY CHRISTMAS: FELIZ NAVIDAD & SOME CURRE NT EVE NTS COMMENTARY shipped throughout this nation. Every time you consume a salad, some of those brussels sprouts and lettuce were probably grown in these two valleys where farmworkers continue to do the cultivation work needed which cannot be mechanized. Someday, farmworkers must be paid a living wage. It is difficult to accept the reality that the CA Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2020! PLAN TO VOTE! And plan to learn about the issues and candidates so that you know who will best represent your personal values.

continue to be an optimist even though the reality of impoverished and homeless residents continues to be a challenge for our community, its moral and ethical standards and its economy. Darryll Cortez, a SJPD retiree, continues to invest his time and talent in arranging for impoverished youth to obtain new clothing from cooperating stores and their management. Cortez and wife Alicia have somehow managed to do this for the past several years. Their mindset is truly altruistic. The Sacred Heart Community Services Center again distributed some 5,000 bags of groceries to needy low-income families. On a different thrust: Fernando Zazueta, esq., President, La Raza Historical Society of Santa Clara Valley and Ramon J. Martinez, Ph.D., plus Consuelo Rodriguez, Ph.D., plus Belinda Quesada conducted a fundraiser event where Duarte Construction made a major contribution ($10,000) which was more than matched by Latino attendees present. It takes money to pay for supportive services which permits La Raza Historical Society to process, properly categorize, and create those archives which will be digitalized and posted in the cloud where that information is very accessible to any and all. The optimistic expectation is that Latino youth will access that family treasure trove of information when they want to learn about the many supportive and creative contributions made by Chicanos (Mexican Americans) and Native Americans. Grandson Bert Garcia made a brief historical summary of the work his grandfather and father did in recording what individuals and organizations did in El Excentrico Magazine. The entire archives will be digitalized and placed in the cloud's memory bank. El Observador today is the successor. Hispanic-Latino family members must now remember to not throw away artifacts and historical documents which may now be given to La Raza Historical society. My personal perception is that many Latinos must become aware that artifacts and historical documents can now be given to La Raza Historical Society. WHY? We need to educate those many Anglo-Saxon recent immigrants who simply do not know about the many prior developments which, over time, resulted in the creation of Silicon Valley. Our Latino youth need to know and understand that not everything intellectual has an AngloSaxon origin. In fact, the Conquistadors did not succeed in destroying the Aztec, Mayan and Inca cultures. They’re legacy and ancestry is still present and lives within our communities. Also, Santa Clara Valley along with Salinas Valley continue to be the source of many vegetables
If you are an American citizen, take time to check on your voter registration status by going to https://eservices.sccgov.org/rov/ which is the site for the Registrar of Voters, County of Santa Clara. That smart phone in your hand has the capability for you to do that and it is your personal responsibility to do just that. The consequences are that you will be able to vote come Tuesday March 3, 2020. The Hispanic vote can be the determinant of many public policies which are being written now and will be on the ballot. Plan to give this Latino community a unique Christmas Gift by planning to vote and actually voting. Keep in mind that despite all that corporate special interest money, the one thing each registered voter has is their vote to push back many undesirable corporate proposals which will be on the ballot. If you are concerned about employment, you need to understand that Google, Facebook, and Apple will be employing an additional 39,000 new employees. Many of these jobs are well paid, but they require the employee to be a competent knowledge worker. So, take time to prepare your mind with the knowhow they need along with the management skills every organization uses to communicate and coordinate logistics, production, distribution, and sales. We need to accept the fact that as Latinos and Native Americans we have contributed to the many developments which resulted in Silicon Valley becoming an envied intellectually creative and innovative center wherein intangible intellectual property is more valuable that all else combined. And, Latinos accepted the presence of other ethnic groups which resulted in Silicon Valley becoming very diverse. Each culture and its knowledge base have different insights about natural phenomenon. Global Climate Change is one such phenomenon which is being addressed by people of color who are composting organic stuff; planning replacement forests; and still doing much of the ordinary grunt work needed to sustain this unique Silicon Valley economy. And most of us know and understand at a gut level that this universe was not created by humankind. Rather it was created by God whose Son, Jesus will be born of the Virgin Mary on Christmas Day. That is the religious legend accepted by those many individuals whose faith is Christian. It was Christ whose parables changed outlooks and postures of those in positions of authority, power and dominion. We, The People of faith will get things done in the future, just as we do now, and have done so in the past. So, develop and keep your faith and enjoy your Christmas 2019! Feliz Navidad; Merry Christmas!

ashington DC - US President Donald Trump wrote a letter this Tuesday fiercely attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic opposition for destroying American democracy by attempting a coup against the American head of state. He said the whole inquiry against him is "declaring open war on American Democracy" and demanded that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, "immediately cease this impeachment fantasy." "By proceeding with your invalid impeachment, you are violating your oaths of office, you are breaking your allegiance to the Constitution, and you are declaring open war on American democracy," Trump said in the letter addressed to Pelosi the day before the House of Representatives is to vote for his impeachment on grounds of "obstruction of Congress" and "abuse of power." The unusually bitter six-page letter charges head-on against the Democratic opposition. "You are the ones interfering in America's elections. You are the ones subverting America's democracy. You are the ones Obstructing Justice. You are the ones bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your own selfish personal, political, and partisan gain," he said. This Wednesday a full session of the Lower House is set to vote on the charges against Trump, which will likely pass immediately due to the large Democratic
majority, which will in turn be a green light for starting a process in the Senate for his removal from office, which will begin in January. Given the Republican control of the Upper House - 53 against 47 - and that impeachment requires a two-thirds majority to pass, the removal of Trump from office is highly improbable. Democrats announced last September the start of an inquiry into Trump's activities after a whistleblower revealed to intelligence services the content of a telephone conversation last July between the US president and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In their talk, the American put pressure on the Ukrainian to open an investigation into his political rival and former vice president, the Democrat Joe Biden, and his son Hunter for suspected corruption in that country. Over the past few months, six committees of the Lower House have carried out an inquiry to open a possible impeachment process against the head of state, which has included hearings of witnesses, both behind closed doors and in open sessions of the House of Representatives. This Monday the House Judiciary Committee published the details of the case in a 658-page document, which concludes that Trump "betrayed the nation" for his own personal gain. The text establishes that Trump should be accused of "high crimes and misdemeanors," according to the US Constitution, for the abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

ARTS & ENTERTAiNMENT
Arturo Hilario El Observador he binary suns of Tatooine have set, and there is finally an ending to the saga from a galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars, the Sci-fi series that has captivated filmgoers and pop culture since 1977, released its ninth, and presumably final story revolving the protagonists fighting a war against a merciless Enemy helmed by Sith Lords like Darth Vader and the Empire, and most recently Kylo Ren and his First Order. To start off, this Star Wars has it all. In its nearly 2 and a half hour runtime, it manages to create brand new story threads, introduce new characters and bring back classic ones, as well as find a way to close that last chapter on a story started by George Lucas mind in the 70’s. It’s a hell of a tall task, but now that’s it out, it’s safe to say that it won’t be the greatest received of them all, but it’s certainly an entertaining close to the saga of Luke Skywalker and those around him. I’ll be honest, that brand new story is established within the first few minutes, not related to the last film, and within this new story there are many details and quests to presumably get the best solution for the protagonists to defeat an evil that has manifested in the galaxy. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster figuring things out, but you’re grateful it’s with the funny and friendly Star Wars mainstays you’ve grown to love and root for over the years. The second half is the conclusion to this new threat, new story arc and the conclusion to the whole cast of the Star Wars universe. It’s a dense film, but one that does try to bring closure to what has seemed an open and limitless world.
If by saying this is the last Star Wars film in the Luke Skywalker saga, you are essentially closing the book on many beloved characters and it’s both amazing and sad to see their final portrayals (maybe forever, maybe for the foreseeable couple of years?) on screen. Characters like Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Chewbacca and newer characters like Jannah, played by Naomi Ackie, and older cast members that return from the original trilogy get their final moments. Through the new story arc and its turbulent final showdown, you get to see glimpses of the old, the new, and the visually astounding worlds of the galaxy. There are a lot of surprising reveals, references and characters, but I’m not spoiling it here. This film showcases the end of the new trilogy, giving Rey most of the screen time as she figures out exactly who she is, and what her purpose is in the galactic fight of good versus evil. In the shadows, with some great performances is Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, who also must face his final curtain call, whether his fate is good or bad, within the light side of the force, or the darkness of the Sith. I’m going to say it once more. “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” isn’t the best of the bunch, that’s 9 whole movies over 42 years so it’s tough to beat, but it is the conclusion, and as a Star Wars fan I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Its pacing is fervent and nonstop, but those moments of calm and character development amongst the original cast and the new one is sublime, a perfect opportunity for the waterworks. Along with the score by John Williams, it’s an emotional, but imperfect experience. I will recommend it to fans regardless, it’s nice to say goodbye.

Arturo Hilario El observador

once heard a priest whom I deeply respected say something about Christmas that troubled me. He said that Christmas was really more for children, while Easter was truly for adults. This statement troubled me because while the Christmas mystery is more easily accessible to children than might be the Easter mystery, Christmas is neither superficial nor superfluous. On the contrary, the Christmas mystery is profoundly penetrating as it provides the foundation for understanding the key significance of the Easter mystery. The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes St. Athanasius’ poignant expression: ‘the Son of God became man so that we might become God’ (CCC 460). This is sometimes referred to as the ‘great exchange:’ God enters the human condition to transform it, heal it, and elevate it, so that humanity might enjoy communion with God. Indeed, there is nothing superficial or superfluous about that aspect of the Christian mystery. This is the deep signifi-
cance of the Christmas celebration: God enters our world, our humanity, so that we might enter his world, his divinity. We might ask one more question in all this: why does God do this? He doesn’t have to. He humbles himself to enter our humanity freely, out of love – love for you and me. I invite us all to ponder that mystery of God’s boundless love during this Christmas Season. Let us take time to ponder the quiet serenity of Manger scene – Joseph and Mary in adoration of the newborn Jesus. This scene speaks to us deeply of God’s quiet, but profound presence in the world, and if we allow him to enter, in our lives. In this Christmas Season, I pray that the sacred mystery of Jesus’ birth penetrate our lives, our families, our relationships, our work and activity, that we might acknowledge the power of the Incarnation ever at work within us – transforming us, healing us, elevating us to communion with a God who loves us beyond our imagination. Be assured of my daily prayers for you, especially in this Christmas Season!
