estas alturas de la pandemia del COVID-19, que está poniendo en jaque al sistema de salud pública y a la economía de los Estados Unidos, nadie pone en duda las contribuciones significativas que la comunidad de trabajadores esenciales de origen latino ha hecho a lo largo de este trágico año que termina. En los hospitales, campos de cultivo, las empacadoras de carne, la industria de la hospitalidad, los supermercados, un incontable número de latinas y latinos han estado y siguen arriesgando todos los días su vida haciendo los trabajos esenciales para llevar comida a nuestra mesa o cuidar a nuestros enfermos. Es un resultado justo para todas aquellas personas que merecen un alivio económico en medio de la pandemia, pero especialmente para aquellas más vulnerables entre nosotros que han continuado realizando los trabajos esenciales a un altísimo costo personal, toda vez que han sido afectadas desproporcionadamente por casos de Covid-19, hospitalizaciones y decesos. Resulta obvio que el nuevo paquete de rescate económico será insuficiente para cubrir las necesidades de amplios sectores del país que han sido golpeados duramente por la

pandemia y sus secuelas. Por eso debe ser visto como un anticipo de un paquete más ambicioso y generoso que pueda ser promovido por el próximo gobierno a partir de enero. Se espera que el gobierno de Joe Biden, que asume el poder al mediodía del 20 de enero, se mueva con velocidad para presentar esa nueva propuesta al nuevo Congreso. Ojalá ese plan tenga el mismo espíritu inclusivo que el más reciente paquete de rescate económico. Es un acto de elemental justicia para todas las familias vulnerables que siguen arriesgando su vida por el bien de todos nosotros durante la peor emergencia de salud de nuestras vidas.

t this stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is putting the public health system and the United States economy in check, no one doubts the significant contributions that the community of essential Latino workers has made throughout this tragic year. In hospitals, farm fields, meatpacking companies, the hospitality industry, supermarkets, countless Latinas and Latinos have been and continue to risk their lives every day doing the essential jobs to bring food to our table or take care of our
Intense negotiations were required for mixed families to be included in the latest version of the economic rescue package approved in Congress and now they will be able to receive the benefit of a $600 check, to try to alleviate the burden that job loss has represented throughout the pandemic. The new package also includes $300 a week for unemployment for 11 weeks, $284 billion from a new small business support package, $82 billion for schools and universities, $13 billion in nutritional assistance and $25 billion in rent help. It is a fair result for all those people who deserve financial relief in the midst of the pandemic, but especially for those most vulnerable among us who have continued to perform essential jobs at an exceedingly high personal cost, since they have been disproportionately affected by cases of COVID-19, hospitalizations, and deaths. It is obvious that the new economic rescue package will be insufficient to cover the needs of large sectors of the country that have been hit hard by the pandemic and its aftermath. That is why it should be seen as a preview of a more ambitious and generous package that can be promoted by the next government starting in January. The Joe Biden administration, which takes office at noon on January 20, is expected to move with speed to present that new proposal to the new Congress. Hopefully that plan has the same inclusive spirit as the latest economic rescue package. It is an act of elementary justice for all vulnerable families who continue to risk their lives for the good of all of us during the worst health emergency of our lives.

IT MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT TEST OF A CHILD’S LIFE. MOST AREN’T GETTING IT Early childhood advocates, with the support of key leaders, are working to expand developmental screenings statewide

lionka Hernandez had a nagging feeling something was wrong with her 1-yearold son, Diego.
But the effort to get more children screened for developmental delays continues. Having a governor who “gets it” is huge, Little said. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who learned he was dyslexic in fifth grade, has made early childhood care and expanding pre-K education focal policies, though the pandemic slowed those plans. For example, he had to cut $159 million from a planned preschool expansion for 20,000 children.
There was his all-too-frequent smile, the way he was so quiet, and how he had spoken “mama” and “papa” at six months of age — and then stopped speaking altogether a few months later. Time and again, Diego’s doctor dismissed Hernandez’ concerns. But by the time Diego went in for his 20-month check-up, the Oakland woman was done hearing he was just fine. In tears after that appointment, she begged a nurse at the reception desk to see a different doctor. The sympathetic nurse handed her a bag with programs and pamphlets, including one for a developmental screening and referral program called “Help Me Grow.” Hernandez called. Three months later, doctors at the Regional Center of the East Bay (where Help Me Grow had referred her) had diagnosed Diego with autism. Hernandez was in shock and not even clear what autism was, but she also felt intense relief. “I felt depressed, thinking he wouldn’t be able to do this or that,” she said. “But over time, I’ve seen he has so many opportunities.” Help Me Grow is a program of the First 5 Association of California, an organization formed in the late 1990s to address the developmental needs of children during the critical early years of life. Launched in Connecticut in 1997, Help Me Grow came to California in 2005 as Help Me Grow Orange County. It’s now present in approximately 30 counties. Help Me Grow works across the state to ensure specific developmental screenings happen when a child is 9 months, 18 months and 24 or 30 months old, as recommended by health experts. Typically, developmental screenings are carried out at a doctor’s office, with parents filling out standardized questionnaires that the pediatrician then reviews. The questionnaires help doctors assess whether children are hitting typical physical, behavioral, speech, cognitive and other milestones. But not all pediatricians use the formal screening tools, and many children fall through the cracks. Children can also miss out on screenings for a variety of reasons, including inadequate access to health care. Help Me Grow helps fill gaps in the developmental screening system by conducting screenings itself when necessary and connecting parents and children in need to resources and programs that can provide therapy and other services. Some children enter Early Start programs, which provide services to infants and toddlers with disabilities identified very early, including those who have complex medical conditions such as cerebral palsy. California’s low screening rates Because there is no uniform reporting system among California’s patchwork of health care programs and services, it’s difficult to say with certainty how many children aren’t being screened.

But statistics suggest the number is dire. According to the federal government’s third-party state-by-state data collector, only around 1 in 5 California children under 4 had received all three screenings in 2019. The state’s 21 percent screening rate was significantly below the national median of 33 percent. Regardless of the exact screening rate, experts agree that tens of thousands of California children with developmental delays aren’t diagnosed until they hit the school system. For children whose delays are detected late, the ramifications can be lifelong. That’s because interventions such as behavioral, physical and speech therapy are often most effective when started during the toddler years. Billions of connections are made in a young child’s brain, spurred by interactions with the world and people around them through touch, sounds, words and song. In fact, research shows between 85 and 90 percent of brain development occurs before a child turns 3. “The first three years last forever,” said registered nurse Sheila Dedrick, manager of the Ventura-based New Parent Resource Center, part of the Community Memorial Health System. When delays are caught early, services can help the child’s brain make the connections that are lacking. But as children get older, it’s “harder to break those brain habits,” said Heather Little, systems director of First 5. “We’re not identifying kids early,” said Dr. Marti Baum, a pediatrician who is the lead for Help Me Grow in the Inland Empire. As a result, “they’re not getting services, and that means they’re already behind before they get started.” Why screening rates are low There are many reasons screening levels are low: doctors are overburdened, parents don’t know to bring kids in, families lack transportation, or the legal status of the family may make the parents hesitant to seek care. Some families are also financially strapped and focused on basic survival, such as providing food and shelter for their children. Disparities in screening rates between Black, Latino and white children also play a role. A
study released in August by the American Academy of Pediatrics found Black children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder more than three years after parents expressed concern with their development. The study noted that 47 percent of Black children with autism also had an intellectual disability compared to 27 percent of white children, who were tested and diagnosed much earlier. Structural racism, prejudice, education and income likely play a role in the disparities, the research suggests. For Carolina Navarro and her son, Eduardo Loza, developmental screening was delayed due to a combination of things. There was the language barrier (Navarro’s primary language is Spanish), not being heard by her physician (he addressed her concerns about how little her toddler slept by prescribing sleep medicine), and her home in San Bernardino County’s high desert, which is far from resources. Eduardo’s behavior concerned his mom. He slept only four hours a day and would do things repetitively like walk around a table for hours. Though he was speaking before he turned 1 —detailing facts about the solar system and planets — it wasn’t back-and-forth conversation. In fact, Navarro thinks his advanced speech and photographic memory made it harder to get anyone to listen to her concerns that something might be wrong.
A challenge in expanding Help Me Grow is the way it’s funded — via a tobacco tax, which also supports First 5. Fewer people are smoking, which means ever-dwindling resources. Sarah Crow, the First 5 Center for Children’s Policy managing director, said Help Me Grow has become savvier at leveraging partnerships and funding partners who see the value in the work. First Five would like to see Help Me Grow in each county, although that may not be feasible due to funding constraints. Baum, the Inland Empire-based doctor, said she wishes she could put a Help Me Grow flyer on every telephone pole in the state. Instead, the organization is working to send home a card with the parents of every newborn printed with a number to call to set up 9, 18, and 24 or 30 month screenings. Help Me Grow and its partners are also working to streamline the data-collection process for doctors and medical offices, so they can better track developmental screenings. And parent advocates are working in communities across California to get the word out. Gabriela Velasco of Orange is one of those advocates. Her son, Jair, was diagnosed with autism at 25 months, thanks to a phone call she made to Help Me Grow. At the time, no one took the concerns she had about her son’s behavior seriously, including her mother.
When Eduardo turned 14 months, Navarro began aggressively looking for help. It took over a year to get him in to see a sleep specialist because of the wait list, she said. Ultimately it took the involvement of her private insurer, the sleep specialist, a regional clinic and First 5 to get the diagnosis.
Now 12 years later, Jair dreams of being an engineer. As a Mommy and Me health educator at MOMS Orange County, Velasco feels blessed to be able to walk other parents through what can be their darkest days. Even her mom, who once dismissed Jair’s autism, is making public service announcement videos about the disorder in Spanish.
At age 3, Eduardo was diagnosed with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and low thyroid function.
“I want parents to know, never give up because it’s going to take a village,” Velasco said. “We can make it together.”
After that, Navarro was able to assemble help: behavioral and speech therapists, teachers and other parents to seek advice from.
A push for solutions
Back in Oakland, Alionka Hernandez’s son Diego is now 9 years old and in fourth grade. He loves to read, draw, and film his own movies. He talks about making cartoons when he gets older and teaching swimming lessons for children with disabilities — the water has always soothed him, Hernandez said.
There are indications that fewer children have

“It’s a whole team,” Navarro said. “They make a big difference.”

ISMARCK, N.D. -- North Dakotans are on the front end of a long winter during a pandemic. But a mental health expert says it doesn't have to mean months of unhealthy isolation. He says people can tap into some reminders, as well as new advice, on how to protect their mental well-being. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll says 53% of U.S. adults feel their mental health has suffered during the crisis. That's up more than 20% from the beginning of the pandemic. Paul Nussbaum is a neuropsychologist at the University of Pittsburgh School of medicine. He said it shows the effect the situation is having on much of the population. "When we have a sense of loss of control and we're not able to sort of express ourselves in ways and cope in ways that we need to cope, there's almost a learned helplessness that begins to emerge," Nussbaum said. He said tips offered back in the spring, such as establishing a routine and staying active, are still helpful. But he also said expressing what you're going through to a friend or loved one can be therapeutic. Nussbaum said added financial stress for many residents is bringing even more anxiety. Be he said those who are struggling need to remind themselves that the crisis isn't their fault, and that showing some vulnerability by talking it out can work wonders. "It's not rocket science, it's not fancy. But it's still foundational for how we can begin to heal," he said. He said sharing these feelings can help people recognize they're not the only ones dealing with these problems. He

ACRAMENTO, Calif - Teachers' unions want to see significant changes to a proposal they say would force schools in California to reopen in March as long as they're out of the "purple" tier, or most stringent level of COVID-19 restrictions. Assembly Bill 10 will be taken up as an emergency measure when the California Legislature returns in January. California Federation of Teachers President Jeff Freitas wrote to state legislative leaders this week to oppose what he describes as a blanket
mandate to reopen. "The one line that we don't want to cross is to remove that authority of local control," said Freitas, in an interview. "Our school boards, our local stakeholders, our parents, our educators should have the right, the control and the data to make the decisions for themselves." The letter notes that teachers want to return to class, but worry it may not be safe. It calls on California to establish a statewide tracking system for outbreaks at schools as they reopen. It also points out that AB 10 contains no benchmarks
for things like testing and contact tracing in schools. Casey Carlson, a specialeducation teacher who serves as president of the Greater Santa Cruz Federation of Teachers, said she believes AB 10 fails to address many important issues. "Funding is needed for adequate PPE," said Carlson. "Funding is needed for safe ventilation in school buildings, and for extra intervention that might be needed for students who have to catch up." The bill is sponsored by several prominent Democrats in the Legislature.

Claro, puede comprar solo productos orgánicos en todas las categorías, pero terminaría gastando más del 20 por ciento más cada vez que compra. Otra buena razón para volverse orgánico si come carne es la ética: el ganado criado de manera convencional está sujeto a confinamiento y hacinamiento mientras se le administran antibióticos para prevenir la propagación de infecciones bacterianas en su medio. El mismo cálculo se aplica a los productos lácteos orgánicos frente a los convencionales: la leche y el queso orgánicos pueden contener más Omega-3, pero por lo demás las diferencias en la salud son insignificantes. Sin duda, hoy es un acto de equilibrio comprar teniendo en cuenta la salud de su familia y su propia conciencia sin arruinarse. t is indeed difficult to figure out which foods are worth spending more money on for organic varieties. Sure, you can just buy only organic in every category, but you’d end up spending upwards of 20 percent more every time you shopped. And certain “conventional” (i.e., non-organic) foods contain lots of pesticides and chemicals while others do not. Knowing where to draw the line in the grocery aisle is increasingly difficult given the profusion of organic choices these days. But luckily if you are armed with a few facts, you can eat healthier without breaking the bank. As for produce, many conventionally grown fruits and vegetables don’t contain or pass along significant amounts of pesticides or other noxious chemicals. The non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) suggests only buying organic for their so-called “dirty dozen” list of common produce items that do tend to harbor larger amounts of chemicals: strawberries, spinach, nectarines, apples, peaches, pears, cherries, grapes, celery, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers and potatoes. Going for organic varieties of these fruits and vegetables is one of the most affordable ways to eat healthier because the price premium on organic produce is in many cases negligible given more consumer demand driving increased production and supply. On the flip side, EWG also produces the “Green Fifteen” list of produce that tends to be contaminantfree even when not organic: avocado, pineapple, onion, papaya, frozen sweet peas, sweet corn, eggplant, asparagus, cauliflower, cantaloupe, broccoli, mushrooms, cabbage, kiwi and honeydew melon. As for animal products, organic varieties can only bear the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) “Organic” stamp if they are

In fact, given how difficult this year has been, a party might be exactly what is needed. The good news is that there are plenty of fun, safe ways to ring in the new year as a family right from the comfort of your own home. Here are a few ideas for making your New Year's Eve celebration a fun event for all: 1) Have a dance party: With a little planning and spirit, any room can be transformed into a dance space. Turn on some tunes, get the family moving and raise the roof to ring in 2021. You could even turn off the lights and use glow sticks or LED lightup wands for added ambiance. 2) Set up a photo booth: Make it a night to remember by setting up a photo booth for the kids to enjoy. Pick a corner, pull out old Halloween costumes or find some festive props, and let your kids get creative. The photos can be great to share on your social channels to wish friends a happy new year. 3) Look through old photos or home movies: As we head into a new year, take a trip down memory lane by looking through old photos or watching home movies. l año 2021 es quizá uno de los años más esperados por todos. La vida retornando a la normalidad, a la vida de antes. No obstante, esto quizá se conseguirá alrededor de los meses del verano. Infortunadamente observaremos más estragos causados por el COVID, durante los primeros tres meses del año. Aunque la vacuna ya está lista, y está siendo transportada por todo el país, no veremos la luz al final del túnel sino hasta finales de la primavera. La vacuna no estará disponible para todos en otros países. Naciones como India por ejemplo, sufrirán más embates de esta enfermedad. El brote en Suramérica logrará ser contenido en parte, dentro de varios meses. Por supuesto, habrá controversia alrededor de este tema, existen personas, muchas personas que le temen a la vacuna. Además existe una cuantía de teorías de conspiración especialmente en internet. Lo justo y ecuánime es escuchar la voz de los médicos, es la ciencia quien nos salvará de esta situación. Debido a la pandemia, la economía mundial se verá afectada, han ocurrido muchas pérdidas, negocios han cerrado de manera definitiva y existirá una gran cantidad de desempleados a nivel global. La economía estadounidense tenderá a mejorar desde inicios de la primavera, pero será una mejoría muy lenta, para millones de desempleados, no será suficiente. Este 2021 será el año del buey en el horóscopo chino, el año trae buenos augurios respecto a la salud, será un año diferente al 2020, será un año mejor. La energía caótica del año de la rata, llegará a su epílogo a finales del mes de enero. Este año el planeta Venus y el planeta Marte, no estarán retrógrados lo que traerá mucho alivio a las gestiones diplomáticas, a las parejas, a los casados, a las empresas y a los comercios. Será un año en el que muchas personas experimentarán sucesos paranormales. Apariciones de espíritus y de seres humanoides, tendrán lugar en diversas partes del mundo. Lastimosamente más incendios forestales acontecerán en sitios que ya fueron dañados por los fuegos. Fenómenos climatológicos afectarán a varios continentes, el calor en algunos casos será insoportable, sequías e inundaciones pueden ocurrir con relativa frecuencia. En el tema migratorio, habrá un sentimiento de calma entre muchos inmigrantes; tepesianos y soñadores, lograrán legalizar su situación. El año 2021 representa una luz de esperanza para todo el mundo, hemos aprendido a través de la pandemia, que es lo realmente importante de la vida; el amor, la familia, la buena salud, la amistad, el agua, los alimentos y la paz, son los tesoros más preciados. Actuemos de corazón, con buena voluntad, con generosidad y con cortesía. Hagamos de nuestro planeta un mundo mejor.
