MAKE PLANS FOR 2020 NEW YEAR – AND INCLUDE PLANS TO VOTE Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR
O
n Christmas Eve, 24 December 2019 I attended Episcopal Church services at All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Palo Alto. Forty years ago, this church would have been full, but in keeping with the decline in church attendance nationwide, the empty pews were evident. Those attending were families with children. Parents continue to value their religious faith because it is where individuals, especially children, first learn about religion, faith issues, and the Decalogue (10 Commandment). All of these issues are discussed in church - though parents are the first to demonstrate the wisdom and civil impact resulting from following the 10 Commandments. However, Christmas is the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in the humble setting of a manger, because there was no room available at local inns. This fable continues to be presented over a three year cycle because in those times, Romans were the dominant governing. Strict Roman law was enforced by Rome's military forces. Roman citizens had many advantages and
civic privileges. The rest of us heathens did not. And, much like today, the Law of the Romans was harsh if you were not a Roman citizen. American citizens do not realize their advantages until they are denied them.
supremacists (especially Mr. Trump) that they may have to put up with us because we are indigenous? I do not think so. However, I now have more evidence which establishes that I belong here. And so, do all who are related to me.
It was Jesus Christ, who after staying at home and minding his Mother Mary (and Father Joseph), began to expose both Roman citizens and all heathens to a more considerate application of the Law.
What will ensure that I get to stay here with my primordial background?
His first major assertion was to throw the moneylenders out of the Church of God. The next was to instruct the elders about the application of a new approach to being faithful. “Give to God, the Things that are God's; And to Mankind, the things that Mankind created following insights and understandings.” My daughter Linda was curious about our family history. So, she had DNA samples analyzed. Mine revealed that I was definitely indigenous American: Mexican (Zapotec) with 56% certitude. An additional 28% of my DNA could be traced back to the Iberian Peninsula (Spanish genomes). I do not know if that genetic analysis will do me any good. It is simply interesting. And it is good to know that my antecedents all were indigenous to this American continent. So does this information entitle me to tell those white
It will be my participation in this Democracy! All I must do, along with all of you, is to participate by voting. We get to select our government representatives by voting for them. As our elected representatives, all elected officials are beholden to their electorate. The most important action each of us, who are registered voters, can do is to participate with our votes. When we, as individuals, do our homework (due diligence), we can collectively select representatives whose connections are to those of us who voted them into office. So do not give up to all that advertisement by special interests who want to exploit this American nation, its working class, and its natural resources. The most important resolution each of us can make for the New Year 2020, is to decide to vote in our own best interests. We all need to take time necessary to learn about the many issues before voting! When our community votes, the
community is officially defining and stating its priorities. At that time, our priorities are being established. During a prior election (2018), some 6,000,000 voters did not record their opinion, so they helped a minority who support Donald Trump to elect him as the President of the United States of America. Had those 6,000,000 nonvoters voted, Hillary Clinton would have been the first woman elected President of the USA. Instead, Trump was elected by very small margins through the electoral college vote. As a person, most of us voters would not want to associate with Donald J. Trump. As a business mogul who was elected President, he has used his business acumen to ensure high employment rates and the current highperformance economy. Many voters would vote to re-elect Trump into a second 4-year term. Unfortunately for Trump, when he publicly impeded the smooth regular operations of the U.S. Congress; when he encouraged certain individuals to not respond to subpoenas issued by the U.S. Congress, Trump had conducted impeachable actions. It was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who properly imposed the two Articles of Impeachment. One was for impeding the work of the U.S.
Congress and the second Article of Impeachment was for misuse of his Presidential Authority and Powers. The House of Representatives, which has a Democratic majority, supported these two Articles of Impeachment which now need to be presented to the U.S. Senate for their consideration and action per the U.S. Constitution.
1042 West Hedding St. Suite 250 San Jose, CA 95126
I am reasonably certain, that an impeached president may not campaign for a second 4-year term. The final disposition of this issue is in the hands of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi because she has not yet forwarded the official House Impeachment Action to the Senate for their consideration and action.

All of this makes for a very interesting Presidential Election 2020 Campaign Process. It is during the 2020 Presidential Election process that the next President of the United States of America will be determined by those registered voters who actually vote. Please make your own personal commitment to participate as a voter during 2020 by actually voting. Keep in mind that when you do not vote, you have supported the other side. So, it is very important that each of you registered voters remembers to actually vote going into the eve of this new decade.

(UNAM), told EFE. The story in the daily El Universal about the event describes lighted Christmas trees and a procession by priests, battalions and dancers in honor of Quetzalcoatl, who is portrayed as a plumed serpent.
First lady Josefina Ortiz helped hand out toys and goodies to the poor children invited to the event, which drew about 15,000 people, including foreign diplomats.
The early 20th century was marked by the rise of extreme nationalism in many parts of the world and Mexico, where the revolution that ousted Francophile dictator Porfirio Diaz had just triumphed, was not an exception.

exico City - At a time when Santa Claus is everywhere, it is hard to imagine that Mexico came close to replacing the long-popular symbol of Christmas with the pre-Columbian god Quetzalcoatl in 1930. A Christmas without Santa sounds like something straight out of a science fiction story, but on Dec. 23, 1930, Mexico City's National Stadium, which hosted large political rallies, was the scene of a strange event free of the jolly old man. On that date, President Pascual Ortiz organized a toy giveaway for children presided over by Quetzalcoatl before a pre-Columbian pyramid. "It was a nationalist project by the education secretary, Carlos Trejo, to replace Santa Claus and put in something more Mexican," historian Alfredo Avila, a professor and researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico
"The Mexican governments of the 1930s used nationalist rhetoric with strong pre-Columbian references to confront what they viewed as a possible US cultural invasion," the historian said. During that time, US brands made a big push into the Mexican consumer market, with the Coca-Cola Company popularizing Santa Claus. Replacing the jolly white-bearded Santa with a plumed serpent was one way for Mexican officials to "bolster the country's pride by looking at its roots," Avila said. "Quetzalcoatl was a peaceful pre-Columbian deity, of the cult of civilization and a bringer of good fortune, unlike the gods of war, such as Huitzilopochtli, who would not have been a good fit as substitutes for Santa Claus, the Three Kings or Baby Jesus," the UNAM historian said. Praising indigenous symbols comes across as paradoxical in a country that created great myths about the pre-Columbian civilizations at the same time that "for the government, it was not important to pay attention to the indigenous communities," whose members accounted for about 20 percent of the population, Avila said. The new Christmas symbol, however, was not widely accepted and El Universal published drawings and ads making fun of the project, as well as letters from readers who were shocked and wondered whether they were supposed to add a plumed serpent to their Nativity Scenes. Critics questioned whether it made sense to try to redefine Christmas with an indigenous emphasis in a country that was home to millions of devout Catholics. Avila noted, though, that the Mexican state had just won the 1926-1929 Cristero War, a conflict that pitted the lay revolutionary government against militias backed by the Catholic Church in a battle for control over education in Mexico. President Pascual Ortiz's administration, for its part, had little sympathy for the Catholic Church, but it tried not to push the faithful too far and held the event on Dec. 23 instead of Dec. 25. No other alternative Christmas celebrations were ever held and nearly 90 years later, Quetzalcoatl remains relegated to museums while children await the arrival of Santa Claus with his sack full of gifts.

ACRAMENTO, Calif - Last year, the federal government took in $79 billion fewer corporate tax dollars than it would have before the 2017 Trump tax reforms took effect, according to a new re-
port. Researchers with the nonprofit Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy evaluated the profits of 279 Fortune 500 companies and found that, even though the law lowered the tax rate from 35% to 21%, corporations paid on average just 11.3%. Report co-author and ITEP Senior Fellow Matthew Gardner says that's because the tax bill failed to eliminate huge loopholes. "That's big news because part of the point of cutting corporate tax rates was supposed to be that we could broaden the base," says Gardner. "Make it so that the legal tax rate is what companies actually end up paying. That doesn't seem to be happening." Instead, the report found 91 corporations that paid no federal taxes, including California-based Chevron, plus Amazon, Halliburton and IBM. The Trump administration insisted the change would bring millions in offshore profits back to the U.S. and spur more job creation. But the report found instead, companies for the most part chose to execute large stock buybacks - which benefit shareholders, not employees. And Gardner says it's all perfectly legal. Corporations are simply taking advantage of the tax breaks that they lobbied Congress to get. "So, it would take a real change of heart among elected officials to turn around and fix this problem," says Gardner. "But you know, the 'glass half-full' argument is that they broke it, they can fix it." The authors suggest that Congress repeal full expensing of capital investments, and limit the ability of tech and other companies to use executive stock options to reduce their taxes by generating "costs" that far exceed what companies actually incur.

ANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. -- A movement is afoot to reduce the number of teenage girls behind bars to zero, led by a coalition of juvenile justice reform groups, judges, attorneys and probation officers. Santa Clara County is one of five sites nationwide taking part in the initiative launched by the Vera Institute of Justice. Santa Clara Superior Court Judge Katherine Lucero supervises the juvenile-justice court there. The judge is spearheading the effort to drill down on each young woman's case to find out what went wrong in her life, and then see if the court can help -- for example, with a safe place to live, transportation to school or drug treatment. "Let's really individualize our approach so that we can get this woman what she needs to be successful," says Lucero. "Instead of overwhelm her or make demands that are not going to be achievable because of a situation at home." The program takes into account issues, such as structural racism and abuse that
lands a disproportionate number of girls of color and LGBTQ girls in the juvenilejustice system. They are collecting the data to be able to analyze current practices and have begun training girls so they can speak out and help inform policy changes. Attorney Darya Larizadeh with Youth Justice Initiative at the National Center for Youth Law says it's important to understand that sexual violence is a big driver of subsequent criminal behavior in girls. So, providing safe places for girls to escape abuse will keep more of them off the streets.
The program also combats the tendency of some law enforcement to keep girls in custody in order to keep them safe from abusive situations or sex trafficking. Instead, agencies are tasked with finding appropriate placements with family, friends or a foster family.

NEW YORK WANTS TO BAN MORE EXPENSIVE PRODUCTS FOR WOMEN ENGLISH
N men.
EFE ew York - The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, announced on Sunday a proposal to prohibit that products aimed at women have higher prices than similar ones designed for
The intention of Cuomo is to end the so-called "pink tax", a phenomenon documented in numerous studies according to which many items and services promoted towards females are more expensive than others equal for men. "It is discriminatory and disgusting to our values and we will put an end to it," the governor said in a statement. Its proposal is included in a package of measures for 2020 and includes legislation that would prohibit price discrimination by gender and that would require certain businesses to publish price lists of their services, under penalty of fines. In a report prepared in 2015, the New York City Council analyzed the prices of toys, clothing, cosmetic and hygiene products and confirmed that in 42 percent of cases, those directed at women were more expensive. According to the data collected, items for women cost an average of 7 percent more than similar items for men, with the biggest difference (13 percent) in personal care products. Thus, the New York governor emphasizes that throughout their life, a woman will have to pay thousands of dollars more than a man for similar products, which ends up affecting her disposable income and her savings. To this is added, he recalled, the problem of the wage gap, whereby women traditionally enter less than their male partners for similar jobs. "For too long women and girls have faced social and economic discrimination in all aspects of their lives, but in New York we are leading the fight for a real gender match," Cuomo said.
