Second Santa Clara County firearm buy back pays out $61,150 and collects 610 weapons On Monday morning the results of the second Santa Clara County gun buy back were revealed and this time around 610 firearms were collected. The total payout was $61,150 and was held at the Reid-Hillview Airport on March 23rd. The first buy back brought in 1,116 weapons from handguns to fully automatic assault weapons. Supreme Court to review affirmative action ban in Michigan A Michigan proposal (“Proposal 2”) which is identical to California’s long standing Proposition 209 will review the Sixth Circuit’s decision to strike down a referendum to Proposal 2. If the case is overturned it means a chance at California being able to end the anti-affirmative action that is currently in place. Dealing only with legislation on ‘gun control’ is not enough. In the wake of the latest atrocity which snuffed out the lives of 26 citizens, 20 of which were children ages 5 to 7, it is recommended that a change in strategy to ‘public safety and security’ be seriously considered. The major objective must be to enact national legislations which increases public safety & security levels. Recommended considerations include the following: 1) Mitigating the use of hand guns, assault weaponry and high capacity magazines of all types. Require their owners to have licenses. 2) Ban the manufacture, sale and use of high capacity ammunition magazines (exceeding 10 rounds capacity). Exceptions will be the future possession of high capacity magazines and weapons by all American military forces, their reserve units and select agencies (local police, sheriffs, FBI & CIA). 3) Enact a program which provides parents and guardians access to mental health services for a troubled youth (ages 12 to 21). This program provides early identification, diagnosis, and therapy which mitigate mental health issues. 4) Present community violence information at local levels. This can be most effectively disseminated in local communities by local ethnic community news organizations (i.e., use the CBO/NGO’s of Hispanics. African American, Vietnamese, Philipino, Chinese local CBO/NGO’s which effectively penetrate their communities. Use all six

ways to communicate to ethnic populations: a) graphics; b) the spoken word; c) local community print media; d) local ethnic radio broadcasting; e) local TV and f) The internet’s websites and social networks. 5) VIDEO GAMES: Standards for depiction of violence, killings, mayhem, brutal beatings, etc. need to be established by the movie/video game industry. A few youth end up not knowing the difference between their personal reality and the virtual reality through which they have become indoctrinated and desensitized. These kids end up being mentally deranged and need mental health services. 6) Enact a component which addresses all forms of violence and bullying in the community. Especially in those ethnic and low-income communities which already are experiencing high numbers of murders related to local gang activities. Impoverished low income communities tend to experience high violence rates coupled with higher levels of local police & public safety activities. For example, half of the 46 killings San Jose, CA has experienced during calendar year 2012 are related to ‘gang activities’. These proposed coordinated approaches deal with the multiple factors usually involved whenever a ‘multiple killing incident’ happens. These include: a) an individual, usually male; b) who has mental health issues; and who has access to high performance weapons, high capacity magazines, and is able to purchase large quantities of ammunition. Mass public killing events have always had a perpetrator who has mental health issues, These individuals have concerned knowledgeable family members and friends who can be enabled via disseminated program information, when seeking help for a known ‘troubled individual’.

Support programs which establish early detection, registration, treatment, and prevention efforts. Said programs must be enacted at ‘grass root’ community levels by Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA/YWCA’s, Community Centers, social and public safety workers who operate in existing ‘hoods.

Therefore, a coordinated comprehensive and integrated approach to enhance public safety and security will have a higher probability of success by reducing the future number of these murderous events. A focus solely on ‘gun control’ has not worked in the past and ignores the several other factors detailed above.

The consequences of not taking a comprehensive inclusive approach are: The potential achievement of a higher level of community safety and security will not be achieved. The experienced number of ‘mass killing incidents’ will continue unabated. The assault weaponry ownership and location registry will not be established. The proactive early identification of ‘troubled individuals’ will not begin to happen; the mitigation of violence, including domestic spousal abuse and bullying, will not occur. Consider that community peace, safety and security are essential to all local social activities; the delivery of civic services; operation of commercial enterprises and local education institutions.

Esto esencialmente significa que las mujeres poco a poco van siendo reconocidas como iguales respecto a los hombres. Puede ser que haya tomado mucho tiempo para que esto sucediera, pero me alegro de haber llegado a disfrutar los muchos sacrificios que han hecho las mujeres para que estemos donde estamos ahora. Las mujeres son hermanas, hijas, madres y la media naranja de una persona especial. Como hermanas, naturalmente cuidan a sus hermanos. Esto tiene mucho sentido ya que estamos programadas para querer, cuidar y criar. Habiendo dicho esto, ser madre puede llegar a ser tarea fácil para algunas, pero siempre requiriendo mucho trabajo y esfuerzo. Aún no siendo madre, puedo imaginar lo difícil que debe resultar cuidar a otro ser que depende totalmente de ti. Y no sólo eso, sino que las mujeres tienen que enfrentar el aumento de peso, los cambios hormonales, el dolor al momento de dar a luz y todo lo demás que conlleva el ser madre. En realidad, no se habla mucho de estos temas, pero debe ser un momento de locura que puede requerir un gran sacrificio, pero de alguna manera se las arreglan. Si no hay niños en las vidas de las

mujeres, podrían convivir con una persona especial con quien compartir su tiempo y ofrecer su apoyo. Algunos hombres no pueden vivir con ellas, pero al final creo que el viejo refrán podría tener razón, ya que también “No se puede vivir sin ellas”. Lo más importante es que las mujeres también son líderes en nuestra comunidad. Algunas han tomado sobre sí mismas la tarea de convertir este mundo en un mejor lugar para vivir, con su esfuerzo diario; ya sea para desempeñarse como médico, juez, o siendo una organizadora de la comunidad. Éstas son algunas de las mujeres que trabajan más duro. Pero recuerden como mencioné anteriormente, también tienen otras funciones que desempeñar, ¿Cómo hacen todo esto? Debe ser complicado pero posible a la vez. Las mujeres son tan vitales. Ellas continúan añorando alcanzar sus metas y luchan por ello. Espero que cuando llegue a tener una hija y ella alcance mi edad actual, reciba el mismo trato que yo he recibido. Puede ser que tengamos un poco más de camino que recorrer, pero hasta ahora las mujeres de las generaciones pasadas pueden estar orgullosas de lo que han logrado. Así que, damas, vamos a seguir adelante, progresando ¡Me siento orgullosa de ustedes!

Veggielution Community Farm Announces 2013 Farm Box CSA Shares Low-Cost CSA Program Increases Community’s Access to Healthy Food This Spring, San Jose’s only nonprofit urban farm, Veggielution Community Farm, is providing 60 South Bay households with colorful boxes of farm-fresh vegetables, picked and packed weekly by volunteers and high school youth program participants. This weekly program, called the Farm Box, runs from June 4 to November 5. But unlike other veggie box subscription programs, half of Veggielution’s weekly boxes will be provided at a significantly reduced price to low-income residents. Shares are on sale from now until they sell out.
Veggielution, founded in 2008 and rapidly expanding since, brings people together around gardening and healthy lifestyles. Last year the nonprofit entered into a 9-year agreement with the city of San Jose to grow produce with organic practices on 6 acres of land at Emma Prusch Farm Park. Veggielution offers gardening opportunities 5 days a week at the farm, as well as a variety of educational programs for youth and adults.

support localfarms. In addition to vegetables, members will occasionally receive flowers, herbs, eggs and other special treats. Veggielution offers two share options for their members, the Sponsor and Family share. For a one-time payment of $690, individuals can purchase a Sponsor Share. They receive 12-20 pounds of vegetables each week from June 4th to November 5th, depending on the season. The Sponsor Share helps subsidize the cost of Family Shares, which are half the price. New Law Improves Breast Cancer Detection

CALIFORNIA A new law taking effect April 1 will improve breast cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue. Senate Bill 1538, authored by former State Senator Joe Simitian, will require, that following a mammogram, women with dense breast tissue be informed of the following:
They have dense breast tissue;
That dense breast tissue can make it harder to evaluate the results of a mammogram; That it is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer; That information about breast density is given to discuss with their doctor; That a range of screening options are available.
Dense breast tissue both makes the cancer more difficult to discern on a mammogram and increases a woman’s risk of cancer. The new law requires women to be told if they have dense breast tissue and, for those who do, suggests that they discuss with their doctor whether further screenings would be advisable. Now a Santa Clara County Supervisor, Simitian said, “By requiring information on dense breast tissue, the law now ensures that women are better informed about their

bodies and will help them make better decisions about the medical screening or care they might need.” “Early detection of cancer is the key to saving lives, which is the most important aim of this law,” said Simitian. “But it also reduces health care costs, because cancer caught early can be treated less expensively and with less hardship to the patient.” About 40 percent of women have dense breast tissue, but an overwhelming majority of women are unaware of their breast density. The risk of breast cancer for women with extremely dense tissue is five times greater than for those with low breast density. A study by the Mayo Clinic in 2011 found that 75 percent of cancers in women with dense breast tissue were missed by mammography alone. Both the cancer and the dense tissue appear white on a mammogram. The legislation, Senate Bill 1538, was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown following the 2012 legislative session.
As it moved through the Legislature, it gained the support of the California Radiological Society, the California Nurses Association, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, the California Affiliates of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Breast Cancer Fund. “I’m gratified that doctors are now required to share this vital information with patients,” said Simitian. “But in addition, those concerned about women’s health should continue to do all they can to make women aware of this issue, to encourage them to ask the right questions about their cancer risk and about appropriate preventative measures.” For more about SB 1538, visit www.senatorsimitian. com and click on the “Are You Dense” icon. A raíz del tercer aniversario de la promulgación de la Ley de Cuidado de Salud Asequible (ACA) y la Notificación Previa de Cambios Metodológicos emitida por el Centro para Servicios de Medicare y Medicaid (CMS), La Coalición Latina hoy formuló las siguientes declaraciones sobre la “Notificación de 45 Días” prevista para entrar en vigencia el 1 de abril de 2013. La Notificación Previa de Cambios Metodológicos emitida por el CMS podría dar lugar a una interrupción de servicios significativa para los 14 millones de beneficiarios inscritos en los planes Medicare Advantage. Esta notificación, junto con las reducciones de financiamiento de Medicare Advantage exigidas por la ley y ya puestas en marcha por la ACA, reducirá el próximo año los pagos de Medicare Advantage en más de ocho por ciento en promedio, o aproximadamente $11 mil millones en 2014. “Nuestros pobres y nuestra clase media son el sector más vulnerable de nuestra comunidad, y se verán afec-

California’s unemployment rate unchanged at 9.8 % Nonfarm payroll jobs increase by 1,700
SACRAMENTO California’s unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.8 percent in January, and nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 1,700 during the month for a total gain of 681,400 jobs since the recovery began in February 2010, according to data released by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) from two separate surveys. The federal survey of households, done with a smaller sample than the survey of employers, shows an increase in the number of employed people. It estimates the number of Californians holding jobs in January was 16,775,000, an increase of 30,000 from December 2012, and up
322,000 from the employment total in January of last year. The number of people unemployed in California was 1,816,000 – up by 3,000 over the month, but down by 212,000 compared with January of last year. EDD’s report on payroll employment (wage and salary jobs) in the nonfarm industries of California totaled 14,526,700 in January, a net gain of 1,700 jobs since the December survey. This followed a gain of 8,200 jobs (as revised) in December. Seven categories (mining and logging; construction; financial activities; professional and business services;
educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; and other services) added jobs over the month, gaining 29,300 jobs. Leisure and hospitality posted the largest increase over the month, adding 7,800 jobs. Four categories (manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; information; and government) reported job declines over the month, down 27,600 jobs. Information posted the largest decrease over the month, down 18,200 jobs. In a year-over-year comparison (January 2012 to January 2013), nonfarm payroll employment in California increased by 254,900 jobs (up 1.8 percent).

Enrollment rates at 20-year low, with first-time students among the most affected
SAN FRANCISCO Student enrollment rates in California’s community colleges have dropped to a 20-year low in the wake of unprecedented cuts in state funding, according to a report released by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). In the Great Recession and its aftermath, the community college system sustained $1.5 billion in budget cuts between 2007–08 and 2011–12, the report finds. These cuts are far larger than those made during past economic downturns in the state. These cutbacks led in turn to a decline in access for students. Had enrollment rates remained at 2008–09 levels, the community college system would today be serving an additional 600,000 students. The sharpest declines in enrollment are among returning students—those returning to school after an absence—and first-time students. Enrollment of first-time students declined by 5 percent—even as the number of California high school graduates increased by 9 percent. PPIC’s survey of administrators shows that the
colleges have prioritized their core academic and career technical missions. Enrollment declines have been lowest for these courses. Nearly all administrators say they also give priority in course enrollment to certain students, usually continuing students— those enrolled the previous semester. Recent high school graduates and basic skills students were less likely to get priority. These priorities led to a dramatic change in the age composition of the colleges’ students: Enrollment among the oldest and youngest students has declined sharply. At the same time, students who have remained in the system are succeeding at higher rates, the PPIC report says. Success has improved by three measures: the share of students who complete a course, earn a passing grade, and successfully transfer to a four-year college or university. The success rates have increased for every ethnic and racial group. The fiscal outlook for community colleges is brighter today because of revenue from
the passage of Proposition 30 and potential increases in the 2013–14 state budget. But the additional funding is unlikely to make up for years of big cuts. The report concludes that if community colleges are to fulfill their multiple missions, they will need to look at finding additional cost savings and developing new revenue sources. Finding new revenue will be difficult because community colleges—unlike CSU and UC—cannot raise fees, which are set by the state legislature. One source of that funding may be local parcel taxes. Another is changes to the fee waiver system. The colleges have waived fees of as many as a third of students in recent years. The income threshold to qualify for a waiver is relatively high. If the threshold were lowered, some students now getting waivers may be able to pay their fees, which are relatively low, on their own. Others are likely to qualify for federal financial aid but don’t necessarily apply for it. Requiring them to do so, as the governor has proposed, could bring in federal dollars.

Local Young Lady Competes For The Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Oakland/San Jose Title Dania Zamudio of San Jose was recently selected to participate in the 2013 Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Oakland/San Jose pageant competition that will take place on April 6. Zamudio learned of her acceptance into this year’s competition when the pageant announced their selections following interviewing in the local Oakland/San Jose area. Zamudio submitted an application and took part in an interview session that was conducted by this year’s Oakland/San Jose Pageant Coordinator. Zamudio will be competing, for her share of thousands of dollars in prizes and specialty gifts that will be distributed to contestants. Zamudio will be competing in the Miss Jr. Pre-Teen division, one of four divisions that will
have young ladies ages 7 to 19 competing in modeling routines, which include casual wear and formal wear. Most important, Dania will display her personality and interviewing skills while interviewing with this year’sOakland/San Jose judging panel. Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition. If Zamudio were to win the title of Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Oakland/San Jose, she would represent Oakland/San Jose and the surrounding communities at the National Competition that will take place in Orlando, Florida. YMCA Honored by First Lady for Work Fighting Childhood Obesity
San Jose CALIFORNIA South Valley Family YMCA recently was honored by First Lady Michelle Obama for its work to combat childhood obesity in the community. The nonprofit received an Honorable Mention in the “Let’s Move! Communities on the Move Video Challenge” at the Let’s Move Faith and Communities event hosted by The White House and the Centers for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Y’s video, “A Community on the Move,” was among nine winning submissions from faith and community leaders, showcasing what they are doing in local communities to offer opportunities to make healthier choices, provide access to healthy, affordable food, and encourage increased physical activity. Videos came in from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. In the video, the Y uses upbeat music and footage, from its after school programs, to show how it provides creative opportunities for children and families to exercise
through sports, group games, cultural dances and ZUMBA classes. Children and families participate in nutrition education, cooking classes and tasting activities to promote eating fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods. “At the Y, we partner with schools, churches, food banks and government agencies to positively impact the lives of youth from low-income families who are at risk of academic failure,” said Liz Gonzalez, program director at the Y. “We provide kids with a safe, healthy and enriching place to be after school.” Mrs. Obama launched the video challenge in February 2012 during the celebration of the second anniversary of Let’s Move! at an event in Longwood, Fla. Twenty-one states accepted the challenge and submitted videos focusing on strategies for children of all ages. A panel of judges from Let’s Move!, USDA and HHS chose one top winner, a Popular Choice winner for receiving the most votes online, and several Honorable Mentions. Ree Drummond, known to her fans as The Pioneer Woman, is raising four active kids on a working cattle ranch in Oklahoma and has written two best-selling cookbooks. She says she loves to find new ways to put more delicious veggies on her family’s table. “I get so excited about my garden — maybe a little too excited!” Drummond says. “Sometimes I literally have vegetables coming out my ears. Fortunately, I’ve got four kids who love to pick just about anything I plant, so everything gets harvested on time — if not a little earlier.” If you don’t have a vegetable garden or can’t always get fresh produce, don’t despair. Flashfrozen vegetables retain much of their flavor and nutrient value. Thaw vegetables before using them in these recipes, or just heat them through and toss with high-quality butter for an easy side dish. When they taste this good, kids will be saying, “More veggies, please!”
Spring Stir-Fry
Yield: 4 servings 1 half stick (4 tablespoons) Land O Lakes Butter with Olive Oil & Sea Salt, divided 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound whole jumbo shrimp, peeled, deveined, tails removed 3 carrots, peeled and chopped 1/2 pound asparagus, ends trimmed off, cut into 2-inch pieces 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen green peas Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 lemon 1/4 cup finely minced fresh parsley Fresh Parmesan shavings, as desired Heat 2 tablespoons butter in large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and stir to cook for 1 minute. Add shrimp and cook for 3 minutes, or until opaque. Remove shrimp and garlic to a plate. Do not clean skillet. Add rest of the butter and melt. Add carrots and asparagus in a single layer and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender but still slightly crisp. Scoot carrots and asparagus to edges of pan, then add peas to middle of pan. Cook for one to two minutes, stirring gently, until peas are heated through and tender. Add shrimp back to pan, stir to toss, then add salt and pepper. Squeeze juice of one lemon all over contents of pan and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Remove from heat. Sprinkle parsley over top. Serve stir fry immediately over cooked rice, or on its own. Top with Parmesan shavings and squeeze on extra lemon juice if needed.
Oven-Roasted Asparagus and Mushrooms
Yield: 4 servings 1 pound asparagus, trimmed 1 (8-ounce) package mushrooms, quartered 1/4 cup red onion, sliced 3 large cloves garlic, sliced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 half stick (4 tablespoons) Land O Lakes Butter with Olive Oil & Sea Salt, melted 1 teaspoon lemon juice Heat oven to 425°F. Arrange asparagus, mushrooms and onions on aluminum foil-lined 15 x 10 x 1-inch baking pan. Sprinkle with garlic, salt and pepper. Drizzle melted butter and lemon juice over top. Bake 15 to 20 minutes until asparagus are tender and lightly browned.

Chavez is the best known American Hispanic who was a civil rights activist. One of his statements was: “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community... Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” We, in San Jose, CA, were fortunate in having Cesar E. Chavez, live here in the ‘Sal Si Puedes’ (get out if you can) area. Here he acquired his leadership skills at CSO, San Jose as a community organizer. Within a few years, Cesar had personally learned much about the socio-economic situtations faced by low income workers, especially the farm workers (los campesinos). Cesar Estrada Chavez was the founder of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW), the first successful farm workers union in America. For more than 30 years Chávez, supported by Dollores Huerta, led the UFW to achieve dignity, respect, fair wages, medical coverage, pension benefits, and humane living conditions, as well as countless other rights and protections for thousands of our nation’s workers. His leadership on behalf of workers helped achieve the first
MARCH 29 - APRIL 4, 2013 industry-wide labor contracts in the history of American agriculture and brought about the passage of the groundbreaking 1975 California Agriculture Labor Relations Act. Recently, on March 22, 2013, when U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Majority Leader Harry Reid (D, NV) attempted to have a U.S. Senate Resolution to honor and commemorate civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez, the U.S. Senate Republicans obstructed its approval. “I am proud to introduce legislation commemorating the life and legacy of César Estrada Chávez – something I have done every year as Chairman of the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force,” said Senator Menendez. “Chávez was one of the greatest civil rights leaders of our time – a man who dedicated his life to fighting for equality, justice, and dignity not only for Hispanic farm workers, but for all workers in the United States. Chávez always said: ‘the fight is never about grapes or lettuce; it’s always about people.’ His legacy serves as a source of inspiration to me and many others who believe in fairness and safety for every American worker. “Regrettably, my Republican colleagues in the Senate are yet again standing in the way of giving César Chávez the recognition he deserves, despite their renewed interest in winning over Latino voters. The contrast could not be clearer: this is the sev-

Harvesting Unions: Cesar Chavez and the people’s fight alongside people like Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy.
Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR Cesar Estrada Chavez was born into the conditions that countless others also faced when being Mexican-American or any Latino nationality in the 1920’s U.S. He was born to a farming family in 1927 in a small area around Yuma, Arizona. As a child with 5 other siblings, he worked alongside them on their ranch land and grocery store, although ultimately this land and store were lost during the Great Depression. In 1938 his family, unable to maintain a stable livelihood in Arizona, moved to California to work in the fields of Southern California, which during the 20th century was the worlds center of agriculture. As a boy, he and his sister helped sick farm workers by driving them to the hospital or giving them general rides. His selflessness was due to the morals his grandmother and parents had instilled in him throughout his life. The value of hard work, importance on caring for the less fortunate and understanding the inequalities of the world around him, created the drive for social upward mobility. His schooling only went as far as 8th grade in order to become a full time farm worker and allow his mother rest from the exhausting farm work. The injustices that Cesar Chavez saw coming from this type of work would eventually build a base for his efforts as a labor reformer. This would shape the future of farm working and civil rights
His ascent from a full time farm worker to a labor leader and Civil Rights Activist began when he joined the United States NAVY at age 17. His experiences being there for two years did not bode well, as he would one day describe it as a the “two worst years of my life”. This was due to the discrimination he encountered being a Latino in military service. After returning from service he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Favela, and moved to San Jose, California. They would eventually have 7 children. Early on in San Jose, Chavez met a priest who enlightened him on the principles of nonviolence and introduced him to the writings of Mahatma Gandhi and St. Francis. These men showed Chavez that through calm, collected tactics, change could be made in society and community. Thus the mechanisms of social organizing began to turn within Cesar Chavez. His first real introduction into organizing was from joining the Community Service Organization (CSO). This group specialized in dealing with immigration and tax problems. They had been enlisting new members in San Jose in 1953 when Chavez met an organizer of theirs named Fred Ross. This man would become a life long collaborator and friend because of his ideals and teachings.During his whole life Cesar had seen and lived through the prob-

lems of the farm workers and the systems that controlled it. Until joining the CSO he had not been able to progress with his ideas and goals. After gaining the knowledge and inner strength to help others in vastly more positive ways, he managed to move up in the CSO ranks, ultimately becoming the president. Although in that position, he was not allowed to organize farm workers, which led to him resigning and beginning his own plans of creating a association for farm workers. He traveled throughout California creating networks with farm working commu-
nities. His new organization was the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA, later United Farm Workers, UFW) and it helped project the civil rights violations that were and had been, committed for years to immigrant laborers in the fields across the country. It helped people gain the knowledge about the respect they deserved among their community, as well as how the voting process worked. In the 1960’s his organization joined with the Filipino Agricultural Workers Union (FAWU) after the farm workers civil rights movements
were becoming increasingly tense. During these moments of boiling social momentum, Cesar Chavez shined as the leader of the movement. Nearly everyone accepted this. He had worked his whole life, first as a youth in the fields to a leader amongst the crowds of supporters. His non-violent tactics reinforced the idealism of Gandhi and St. Francis and would go on to be a signature tactic of his vision and power with the communities of the nation. Even after he helped restructure the treatment of farm workers and made their lives a lot more positive, he continued to strive for com-
munity service until his death in 1993. Fasting showed his physical commitment to the non-violent movements he led. This spiritual inclination was a way to refocus his vision and find support from followers who knew that Chavez cared deeply about the UFW and everything it wanted to accomplish. These initiatives helped made Chavez into a symbol for perseverance, justice and peaceful protest. His legacy continues to inspire the generations that came after him, in fighting for equality for immigrants and all workers in the United States. He was awarded a posthumous Medal of Freedom from then President Clinton in 1994. On March 31st his legacy and symbol of community strength, environmentalism and civil rights is celebrated as an official state holiday.

México NOTIMEX La vida de dos artesanos, que a través de su labor se han convertido en extraordinarios artistas, es recogida en el segundo libro de Hartmut Zantke “Alebrijes, Obras maestras de Jacobo y María Ángeles”, presentado en el auditorio del Museo de Arte Popular (MAP). La publicación combina narrativa e ilustración para dar a profundizar aún más en el arte popular mexicano, que está inspirado en toda una zoología fantástica prehispánica, y donde es posible visualizar el pensamiento creativo mexicano muy arraigado en motivos religiosos, así como en el arte ancestral. Hartmut Zantke explicó que el libro surgió a raíz de una fuerte inquietud y conexión que tuvo con el arte que en conjunto han llevan a
cabo Jacobo y María durante toda su vida, a quienes había comprado en el pasado 300 de sus piezas, en su mayoría alebrijes. Desde su juventud, Zantke se ha dedicado al estudio del arte europeo y asiático, sin embargo, desde 1991, se interesó por el arte indígena mexicano, pues en ningún país halló tan fuertes raíces que conjugan el arte antiguo y moderno, algo que sólo sucede en México. Parte de la tradición que en ellos se observa proviene del trabajo que escultores y pintores mexicanos, quienes utilizaron formas, colores, ornamentos, pictografías de culturas muy antiguas y que retoman mitos y leyendas mayas, aztecas, zapotecas y mixtecas. Además, Hartmut Zantke destacó que el trabajo de Jacobo y María recuerda a las
formas primitivas de la vida, tal y como alguna vez lo representó el zoólogo Ernst Haeckel en sus retablos al describir a los organismos unicelulares que viven en el mar, mismos que introdujo al arte. De la misma manera, el autor mencionó que los reflejos en diferentes formas simétricas sobre los que trabajan estos artesanos, así como el uso de formas tridimensionales, quienes desarrollan su arte desde lo minúsculo para elaborar una estructura compleja muy bella. “María y Jacobo toman como bases diseños de sus ancestros, usan elementos muy complejos y que los posicionan como perlas o diamantes en un collar dan de manera muy intensa una fuerte muestra de lo que es el arte mexicano, que tiene como característica fundamental su humildad”, concluyó.

Juan Carlos Miranda SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR The other day, after a long day at work, I was trying to hurry with what I was doing because I wanted to go home when my friend Mari asked me a question--actually two. The first one was, “Are you still writing your column?” To what I replied, yes. The second question required a little more thinking and reflection on my part. “Why don’t you ever write about big girls?” I immediately replied, “But I do! I mean, I have written an article or two.” Afterwards on my way home, Mari’s question still resonated in my head.
The truth is, the majority of women, if not most, do not look like these people who have been genetically blessed-one in a million. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you view it), not everyone has been blessed with the same genes. Some us are tall or short, big or small and, if you ask me, I think there lies the beauty of it. We all have something unique, something that makes us stand out from the rest, something that makes us “me,” and that’s just great. I mean, how would it feel to look like those people we idolize for their beauty? What would it be like if everyone looked exactly the same? Just boring, wouldn’t you agree?
“An article or two?!” Could it be possible I had become just another cynic who believes all that crap that media depicts as being beautifully acceptable? That, if a woman does not look like a Victoria’s Secret model, they can’t be deemed attractive? Media has set the bar intrinsically high and realistically unattainable.
Real women come in all shapes and sizes, yet it is the same women--the majority-that get ostracized by the same channels that should be catering to them. The truth is, real women are not all skinny bitches. Come on, I know you’ve all thought the same thing when you came across a skinny, ditzy girl. Latin
women have curves! They got boobs, and hips, and ass and although they might not look like JLo or Sofia Vergara they have the confidence to strut their stuff down the street. Real Latinas got flavor that oozes through their pores when they go dancing, wearing a tiny dress that barely cover their assets because someone forgot to tell the manufacturers that real women have curves. Something’s gotta change. It is time clothing designers take a hard look and go out into the real world where the regular size is 16 instead of 2. It is time they start designing clothes for the real consumers, the ones that matter, and not a tiny fraction of the population. The fact is, real women are not all skinny bitches and it’s time for the media to start catering to these women. When will that start, it’s up to us. Just remember it begins with a phone call, an email, or a stance.

Earthquakes to Host Second Annual 5K/10K Challenge San jose CALIFORNIA The San Jose Earthquakes announced that the club will host its second annual Earthquakes 5K/10K Challenge, benefiting The Health Trust of Silicon Valley and the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund, on Sunday, Aug. 18. The 5K/10K Challenge begins at 8 a.m. with three options for runners of all ages. The San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund was established in 2008 and focuses on raising awareness among local youth about the importance of healthy lifestyles and staying active. Additionally, the Community Fund has helped create a number of community programs to support the local Hispanic community. In 2012, the Earthquakes raised over $75,000 to benefit the community. Sharks acquire 2013 and 2014 second round draft selections San jose CALIFORNIA Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager, Doug Wilson, announced that the club has acquired second round selections in the 2013 and 2014 NHL Drafts from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Douglas Murray.“We have tremendous respect for Douglas as a
hockey player and a person,” said Wilson. “He has been a warrior for our hockey club for the past eight seasons and he has been in the Sharks family for the past 14 years. This deal places Douglas in a quality situation which he deserves.” Murray was originally selected by San Jose in the eighth round (241st overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry
Draft. He leaves ranked 13th in games played (451) on the Sharks all-time list, posting 59 points (six goals, 53 assists), 361 penalty minutes and a +32 rating. He also appeared in 57 Stanley Cup Playoff games with San Jose, 11th most in franchise history, where he notched ten points (two goals, eight goals).

“People can use mobile alerts to find flash sales on flights and resorts, and their PC to book vacations without the extra expense of a travel agent,” says Marian Merritt, Internet safety advocate for Norton by Symantec, global leaders in online security. “But, in the excitement of planning a vacation, security can often be an afterthought.” Offers for free airline tickets on social media sites, phony (“phishing”) emails
about how to earn more frequent flyer mileage, or offers for discounted excursions are all ways cybercriminals try to lure you in so they can steal your personal information. At first glance, any of these scams can look entirely legitimate, so before you click a link in an email or on a social network, take the extra step to verify the offer by visiting the company website. One of the most used digital devices on vacation is the smartphone -- you use it to take pictures, search for the best places to eat and to find your way around with GPS. But, if your phone goes missing, it can be a bigger headache than the security line at the airport. Merritt recommends installing security software like Norton 360 Multi-Device before you hit the road, so if your phone or tablet is lost or stolen, you can remotely locate it, or even temporarily lock it, to prevent anyone from accessing it until you get it back. If you’re going to be spending time in the sand or out on an excursion, leave your
phone locked up in the hotel room safe for the day. Not only is it likely to be a distraction from the fun, but bringing it everywhere increases your risk of loss or theft. And, considering all of the apps, photos and private information that live on your phone, losing it is probably worse than losing your wallet. Finally, while it may be tempting to make purchases while lounging by the pool, or to check your bank account balance while waiting at the gate for your flight, unsecured public Wi-Fi hotspots can be a virtual paradise for cybercriminals.
