Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: • lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. • treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. • improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: • have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. • have a heart condition • have liver problems • have kidney problems • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” • are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: • other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem • water pills (also called “diuretics”) • potassium supplements • a salt substitute • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? • Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. • For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. • If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child. • For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. • DIOVAN can be taken with or without food.

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. • If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Lie down, if you feel faint or dizzy. Call your doctor right away. Kidney problems. Kidney problems may get worse in people that already have kidney disease. Some people will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. Call your doctor if you get swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, or unexplained weight gain. If you have heart failure, your doctor should check your kidney function before prescribing DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood pressure include: • headache • flu symptoms • stomach (abdominal pain) • dizziness • tiredness Side effects were generally mild and brief. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with heart failure include: • dizziness • joint and back pain • low blood pressure • tiredness • diarrhea • high blood potassium Common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people after a heart attack which caused them to stop taking the drug include: • low blood pressure • cough • high blood creatinine (decreased kidney function) • rash Tell your doctor if you get any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of DIOVAN. For a complete list, ask your doctor or pharmacist. How do I store DIOVAN? • Store DIOVAN tablets at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15°C-30°C). • Keep DIOVAN tablets in a closed container in a dry place. • Store bottles of DIOVAN suspension at room temperature less than 86°F (30°C) for up to 30 days, or refrigerate between 35°F-46°F (2°C-8°C) for up to 75 days. • Keep DIOVAN and all medicines out of the reach of children. General information about DIOVAN Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Do not use DIOVAN for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give DIOVAN to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them. Preoperative aspirin therapy can benefit cardiac surgery Aspirin taken within five days of cardiac surgery is associated with a significant decrease in the risk of major postoperative complications, including renal failure, a lengthy intensive care unit stay and even early death (30-day mortality), according to a study by researchers at Thomas Jefferson University and UC Davis Medical Center set to appear in the journal Annals of Surgery.

Operation “Second Chance” 2011 The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with all other Santa Clara County law enforcement agencies, will be implementing a special monthlong program in which individuals with NON-VIOLENT MISDEMEANOR CRIMINAL and TRAFFIC WARRANTS can receive a citation with a new court date, in lieu of being booked into the County Jail. “Operation Second Chance” 2011 has begun and will run through December 31st. Individuals can go to any Santa Clara County law enforcement agency to receive their warrant citation, which will require a new “Promise to Appear” in court date. Operation Second Chance 2011 is directed towards all misdemeanor warrants, no matter what the bail is, including those warrants stamped “No Cite and Release,” and “No Bail.”

The following warrants DO NOT qualify for this program: felony warrants and ANY warrant involving violence. However, subjects with these types of warrants should take this opportunity to turn themselves in so they can take care of their matter in court.

This program has been tremendously successful over the past six years. More than 2,100 people have taken advantage of the program and avoided spending the holidays in jail by selfsurrendering. They were issued citations with a new court date and released “on the spot.” The program remains countywide with all law enforcement agencies participating. Individuals with outstanding misdemeanor warrants can go to their local Police and Sheriff’s stations and surrender themselves on the outstanding warrants and be released instead of going to jail.

When I became Governor again—28 years after my last term ended in 1983—California was facing a $26.6 billion budget deficit. It was the result of years of failing to match spending with tax revenues as budget gimmicks instead of honest budgeting became the norm.

In January, I proposed a budget that combined deep cuts with a temporary extension of some existing taxes. It was a balanced approach that would have finally closed our budget gap. I asked the legislature to enact this plan and to allow you, the people of California, to vote on it. I believed that you had the right to weigh in on this important choice: should we decently fund our schools or lower our taxes? I don’t know how you would have voted, but we will never know. The Republicans refused to provide the four votes needed to put this measure on the ballot. Forced to act alone, Democrats went ahead and enacted massive cuts and the first honest, on-time budget in a decade. But without the tax extensions, it was simply not possible to eliminate the state’s structural deficit. The good news is that

our financial condition is much better than a year ago. We cut the ongoing budget deficit by more than half, reduced the state’s workforce by about 5,500 positions and cut unnecessary expenses like cell phones and state cars. We actually cut state expenses by over $10 billion. Spending is now at levels not seen since the seventies. Our state’s credit rating has moved from “negative” to “stable,” laying the foundation for job creation and a stronger economic recovery.

Unfortunately, the deep cuts we made came at a huge cost. Schools have been hurt and state funding for our universities has been reduced by 25%. Support for the elderly and the disabled has fallen to where it was in 1983. Our courts suffered debilitating reductions. The stark truth is that without new tax revenues, we will have no other choice but to make deeper and more damaging cuts to schools, universities, public safety and our courts. That is why I am filing today an initiative with the Attorney General’s office that would generate nearly $7 billion in dedicated funding to protect education and public safety. I am going directly to the voters because I don’t want to get bogged down in partisan

gridlock as happened this year. The stakes are too high.

My proposal is straightforward and fair. It proposes a temporary tax increase on the wealthy, a modest and temporary increase in the sales tax, and guarantees that the new revenues be spent only on education. Here are the details: • Millionaires and high-income earners will pay up to 2% higher income taxes for five years. No family making less than $500,000 a year will see their income taxes rise. In fact, fewer than 2% of California taxpayers will be affected by this increase. • There will be a temporary ½ cent increase in the sales tax. Even with this temporary increase, sales taxes will still be lower than what they were less than six months ago. • This initiative dedicates funding only to education and public safety—not on other programs that we simply cannot afford. This initiative will not solve all of our fiscal problems. But it will stop further cuts to education and public safety. I ask you to join with me to get our state back on track.

It would be prudent for Latinos to become more involved in civic affairs, causes, and movements. Just recently ‘Los Voluntarios de La Comunidad’ joined the Occupy San Jose group in a rally at San Jose City Hall and participated in a march to Cesar Chavez Plaza. While both groups share common concerns, the “Occupy Movement” would be advised to carefully analyze and project the impact of its collective actions. Certain unintended outcomes have been experienced. For example, when the Occupy Oakland group managed to close down the unloading of container ships, it was the teamsters longshoremen and warehousemen who lost wages. These labor groups are part of the 99% whose personal income earnings were negatively impacted. If the Occupy Oakland group leadership wants to influence corporate decision makers, it would behoove them to reconsider their ‘Occupy’ goals and strategies. Corporate executives of multinational corporations may be influenced with direct communication from each individual member of the “Occupy Oakland” group. Why not send thousands of letters to those corporate decision makers? These executives are very interested in ‘profitable enterprises and operations’, but are not the ones who lose a day’s wages when the port’s operations are shut down by protestors who deny access of trucks into the wharf area. These executives need to become informed about the fallout of their decisions which impact many who belong to the 99% grouping. And when a work-

er’s earnings are curtailed, do not expect their union representatives to be understanding and supportive. Jose Sandoval, a leader of “Los Voluntarios de la Comunidad” is very committed to enabling the acquisition of driver’s licenses by undocumented workers. It would be more effective to encourage members of “La Comunidad” to write letters to the U.S. Congress and to directly address members of the U.S. Congress to focus on doing the business of the people by writing the federal legislation that enables the State of California and every state of the union to issue driver’s licenses to the undocumented residents amongst us. The basic issue lies within the authority and responsibility of the U.S. Congress because legal residency is a federal government matter. So why not organize a letter writing campaign directed to members of Congress, especially those on the Congressional committee responsible for drafting federal legislation that has a chance of being enacted as the ‘Law of the Land’. Another strategy which could be adopted by the Occupy Movement would be to encourage citizens to become registered to vote, learn about the issues, and then to vote on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. The same strategy needs to be applied to their common concern about mortgage foreclosures. What America needs is a national housing policy that encourages and enables citizens to end up owning their home. Current mortgages (which amount to being a contract to purchase a dwelling and land) have legal language which defines

the rights of the lenders, brokers, and banks. The home buyer has nothing which protects his/her interests and built-up equity. The Office of Consumer Affairs needs to take up this cause. Predictably, brokers, banks and lenders will oppose any mortgage legal language changes. The home buyer (a consumer) has almost no rights, but all the obligations to make on-time monthly payments. A challenge is to formulate federal laws which enable a home buyer to stay in that dwelling. Figure out a way for the mortgage to ‘earn money’ for the lender while allowing the home buyer to remain in that dwelling. That procedure is not fully defined today. A recommendation is to form a teaching program which informs your members/followers regarding which elected official is responsible and then hold that elected official accountable. The Occupy Wall Street movement has had much success in refocusing the nation’s attention to issues of disparate unfair tax rates and the need to protect the middle class whose consumerism is essential to sustaining the American consumer economy which is the largest and most stable economic engine on earth today. Nonetheless it is good to see Latinos becoming more involved in civic affairs which require current public policy and business practices to be redefined to achieve ‘a greater good for most of us”. It is not enough to ‘work hard’; It is necessary to ‘become informed’ and then act in one’s best interest.∆

Young aspiring musicians at Burnett Middle School in the San Jose School District have another reason to be filled with holiday cheer. Fidelity Investments surprised the students with new musical instruments during a special holiday music concert. The school’s principal announced the performance as part of a special series of “holiday music.” The string orchestra played for roughly 80 students and firm representatives.

Fidelity’s branch manager also took the stage. He explained the role of Fidelity to the students and touched on teamwork and how music teaches it.“Fidelity is happy to support the arts in our local schools and help programs, like the one here at Burnett Middle School, provide as many students as possible with opportunities to explore their interests in music,” said Matt Enger, vice president and branch manager of Fidelity’s Campbell Investor Center.

Currently, approximately 170 students participate in the conservatory-style music program, which includes concert band and string orchestra at beginning and intermediate levels. Students inclined toward writing music also have the opportunity to learn about composition and recording software in digital music classes. Staff members from Fidelity’s Campbell Investor Center presented the students with the new instruments decorated with festive holiday bows, including: two alto saxophones, three tenor saxophones, three trombones, two cellos and twelve violas. The instruments are part of a specific wish list identified by the school to help expand their growing instrumental music program. The instruments are valued at more than $30,000.

Students like Isaias Martinez were very excited about the gifts.

Staff members from Fidelity presented the new instruments. “I love it,” said Isaias Martinez. “Students don’t have a chance to play brand new instruments and we will.” The students were super excited. No words can explain their reaction. Some were so amazed by the surprise that they refered to the instruments as an early Christmas gift. With all the budget cuts, the arts are under funded so schools need support from organizations like Fidelity. Burnett is focused on closing the gap. This year Burnett Middle School ranked seventh in the County for

their Academic Performance Index (API) gains. Over the past three years Burnett has showed continued growth on their API, gaining 50 points to increase their score to 692. “This means a lot to us. We will now be able to have a complete band,” said music teacher Jelani Canser. “Now the students will have a more realistic idea of what an orchestra and band should sound like, and their eyes will be open to what they can really do!” Cinthia Rodriguez is the Editor of El Observador. Año tras año miles de personas celebran el 12 de diciembre en grande. Recuerdo cuando mi mama me llevaba a misa y siempre había niñas y señoras vestidas un poco raro. Siempre le preguntaba a mi mama porque y no le tome mucha importancia. Ahora a los 24 años me encuentro otra vez averiguando el significado de ese día tan especial, simplemente conocido como el día de la virgen.

Desde entonces se cree

que a hecho muchos milagros. Su presencia se celebra con misas dedicadas a ella para dar gracias por todos los milagros que ella realiza todos los años. Se asen cantos y bailes para celebrar en su nombre todo el amor que le tienen todos. En las misas sus seguidores demuestran todo el amor que le tienen. En especial, los mexicanos se unen a la virgen de Guadalupe y es referida como la virgen morena. Ahora también entiendo que las niñas y señoras vestidas raras se visten con prendas similares a las que adornan a la virgen. Aprendí que en esa fecha fue cuando ella se le pareció a Juan Diego en su manto. Juan diego era un indio muy humilde que la virgen de Guadalupe escogió para que le llevara un mensaje al obispo de la iglesia católica

romana. La primera vez que fue no le creyeron y regreso al monte de Tepeyac para decirle ala virgen de Guadalupe lo que sucedió. Era el mes de diciembre, cuando el tiempo es frio y seco. Entonces la virgen le dio unas hermosísimas flores de todos colores y el regreso. Con su manto lleno de aquellas flores perfumadas fue y pregunto por el obispo. Lo recibió en el pacillo de la iglesia y le volvió a decir que la morenita quería una iglesia en el monte de Tepeyac. Como prueba Juan Diego dejo caer su manto y cayeron aquellas hermosas flores. La imagen de la virgen de Guadalupe también apareció en el manto del mensajero. Entonces todos los que estaban presente se arrodillaron al ver por primera ves ala madre de todos los mexicanos.

Doctors Without Borders Pays Tribute to the People Fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa Doctors Without Borders (DWB) launched a music project, “Positive Generation: Voices for an AIDS-free Future,” based on songs created by HIV support groups in Zimbabwe and recorded with Zimbabwean and international artists, including Estelle, Alejandro Sanz, Paula Fernandes, Oliver TUKU Mtukudzi, Karina Pasian, ten Zimbabwean choirs, and many others. The music aims to raise awareness about the reality of HIV/AIDS in subSaharan Africa by highlighting how people on treatment can still live a ‘positive’ life. The project also highlights

the importance of programs that prevent mother-to-child transmission of the virus, and warns of the consequences that current global funding shortfalls for HIV/AIDS programs would have on the lives of thousands of patients. DWB is using music to raise awareness about the virus in Zimbabwe, to educate patients and their families that they are not alone, to inform them that treatment can stabilize the illness, and to end stigmatization of HIV/AIDS patients. Support group choirs, largely made up of Zimbabweans living with or affected by the virus, offer an open, posi-

tive approach to HIV/AIDS education. Their testimonies and songs raise awareness about how to prevent the spread of the disease and encourage people to seek HIV diagnosis and treatment. “With this project, we want to pay tribute to a generation of people who are living ‘positively’ with HIV. Their testimonies transmit positive messages and help fight stigmatization. With DWB’s operational experience in HIV care since 2000, and the latest progress in HIV science, we know that an AIDS-free generation is possible if effective programs are implemented on the ground.

We need to keep fighting to reach this goal,” said Mari Carmen Viñoles, head of DWB’s mission in Zimbabwe. Through “Positive Generation,” DWB aims to bring attention to the recent progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and to warn of the threats that could stop or even reverse progress. Recent research has shown that early treatment not only saves lives, but also has a significant impact on reducing HIV transmission and preventing new infections. Zimbabwe, the country with the third highest HIV burden in Southern Africa, where 14 percent of adults (about one million people) and 150,000 children are currently living with HIV, has taken ambitious steps to improve HIV/AIDS services. Zimbabwe has seen positive results: currently 63 percent

of those in need of antiretroviral therapy (ART) are receiving treatment, up from only 5 percent in 2006, and expanded ART coverage has reduced annual AIDS deaths by 42 percent since 2006. This progress, which could mean a future free from HIV, is threatened by a lack of funding and program closures. Zimbabwe, like many other high prevalence countries, will require additional funding in the coming years, yet AIDS funding is currently being cut back globally, as confirmed by the decision by the board of the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to cancel Round 11 funding.  “We are facing a serious situation. We are seeing some of the most promising developments in more than a decade of treating patients living with HIV/AIDS, with

the potential to turn this epidemic around. Yet these promises will come to nothing if there is not enough funding; we are even running a serious risk of losing ground in the fight against HIV/AIDS,” said Paula Farias, project coordinator of Positive Generation. Without donors making every effort to fulfill their pledges and step up to meet the real needs on the ground, countries with high HIV prevalence will inevitably face disruptions to their programs. More funding is also crucial to ensure that attention is paid to pediatric HIV care through targeted strategies and adapted treatment, and to implement prevention of mother-to-child transmission programs.
