let’s make those 2015 New Year’s needed resolutions now to make changes and transitions happen sooner rather than later. We all must get to work on several issues which are ‘in our face’ now. Do not expect any peace and tranquility without personally doing something about the following: 1) relationships; 2) ignorance; 3) materialism; 4) having life’s essentials; 5) taking a role in the local society and its economy. 1) Relationships require trust, communication skills, empathy, sympathy, charity, love, faith, forgiveness, sympathy, and empathy. Think about these intangible things. 2) Ignorance can be reduced by education; acquiring knowledge (facts). Many presentations exist on the internet; try the KHAN Academy.
3) Materialism (owning or having things) does not provide a sense of belonging or a high self-esteem. It does require engagement in local commerce (ownership with stewartship works). 4) Having life’s essentials; food, water, clothing, security affordable housing, safety and a sense of belonging. Google ‘Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs’ to expand on this concept. 5) Taking a role in the local society and its economy. Too often one is not aware that learning negotiation skills; being able to compromise; becoming engaged and involved in local commerce enables one’s role in society. A job’s wages enables one to provide for self and family (the most basic unit of society). Think about the above and make your own resolutions for change and transitions which begin during 2015. It takes a bit of courage, deter-
mination, and commitment to make resolutions and transitions which lead to high self esteem and satisfaction; contentment. Try it during the coming New Year 2015! Health Department must provide human behavioral health modification expertise. The experience of that ‘State prison realignment program’ used to decompress the CA State prison census must be used here. Also, the ‘Faith Community’ and the SJ Mayor’s Gang Task Force need to have joint meetings to discuss the role of ‘personal values’ which impact the bias, bigotry, prejudice, and racism in our community. These negative attitudes exist in all of us to some degree. As a very diverse community we need to face up to that reality, before a major destructive event such as that which occurred at Watts, happens here.

GREEN LIVING
Lori Abbott California News Services SACRAMENTO, CA Rice farming in California is entering a new era. The Air Resources Board is considering a proposal to allow rice farmers to generate offsets to sell in the state’s cap-andtrade market. “The program will allow rice farmers to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions while creating new revenue”, said Robert Parkhurst, agriculture greenhouse-gas markets director for the Environmental Defense Fund. “This is a very unique protocol,” he said. “This would be the first time a crop-based protocol would be a part of California’s cap-and-trade system. So, it’s really significant.” Rice production is especially important to clean-air efforts because flooded rice fields produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The proposal allows farmers to voluntarily switch from wet to dry seed-
ing; drain their fields seven to 10 days earlier; or alternate flooding and drying throughout the growing season. Paul Buttner, manager of environmental affairs for the California Rice Commission, said the rice industry has been at the forefront of innovative farming practices, and called this an important first step. “We’ve been working for many years,” he said, “and we’ve developed many technical tools and unique approaches to address making this a reality for emissions reductions across large landscapes of agriculture.” Rice is one of California’s largest crops, contributing more than $5 billion a year and 25,000 jobs to the state’s economy.
Parkhurst said the protocol will allow rice farmers across the United States to generate offsets to sell in California’s carbon market. It eventually may be used for other crops to help the state’s agricultural producers’ transition to practices that reduce greenhousegas emissions. “A lot of what’s been done in this protocol can set the stage for future protocols from agriculture,” he said. “So, this could be something that could be applied to California almonds or to another California crop.” Parkhurst said the rice protocol also ensures that important wetland habitat will be maintained for wildlife and bird populations. The Air Resources Board is to meet to consider it.

Arturo Hilario El Observador As the holidays come to a close and the busyness settles, actress Yvette Yates gets to spend it with her parents, who are in town visiting from the Southwest. There will be a lot of cooking while they celebrate the holidays together. Yates stars in Paul Thomas Anderson’s crime/comedy/ drama film adaptation of the novel “Inherent Vice”, written by Thomas Pynchon and starring a studded casts which includes Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro among others. Yates is originally from El Paso, Texas, and growing up in that culture affected her outlook and identity. “My parents are from Ciudad Juarez and I was born in El Paso Texas so I’m definitely
a border town girl, strong about my roots, and proud of it”.
mathematics professor. So it was always education” she says.
Her parents have ties to education, “my mom is a paraprofessional she works with autistic kids in an elementary school and my dad works at the community college as a
This led her towards the medical field, where she ultimately ended up at UCLA. “its not a straight line, I went to UCLA and got my degree
in Physiological Science, I was trying to be a doctor and I love medicine, I love the science, I still do, I think its amazing, and I still read up on it. I took the MCAT, and I also did research in the school of medicine at UCLA.” In addition she was published in the Journal of Molecular Immunology. After taking the MCAT, and doing well on it she had her heart set on another career field. “I spent all this money on school (yet) I wanted to do something in entertainment but I didn’t know what it was just yet. But I knew I had to try it.” At first her foray in the entertainment industry saw her working within the production department, essentially getting experience behind the scenes. Yates says this helped her a lot first I started with production and behind the scenes, which helped her a lot. “It taught me the work ethic of being on a set, really respect everyones time and efforts.” She then moved on to being in front of the camera for student thesis films as a way to get experience as an actress, soon she would find her passion. “I didn’t have anyone to really go to, ‘oh so how do I go into acting?’ Everyone I knew was a science major, mostly.
But once I started doing the shorts I got ‘Nina Quebrada’ which is ‘broken girl’ and it was about human trafficking.” Soon after Yates began attending film festivals, and in 2008 was nominated for the Imagen Awards, going up against films like “Love in the Time of Cholera” and “La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon)”. “El Gringo”, opposite Christian Slater, was her first lead role. Now, with Inherent Vice and her future looking bright, she feels like she’s on cloud 9. “I screamed like i had won the lottery, and I did, i really did because working with Paul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin phoenix and this array of high caliber cast and crew, its so surreal and i’m so grateful to be a part of it.” In ‘Inherent Vice’ Yates plays Luz. “She is Mexican-American, but she is this American girl living through the love, sex, rock and roll era. There is 60’s, 70’s vibes and not being constrained by boundaries. You see her, shes in beverly hills, not stereotypical, not somewhat shut in, or being
subdued, and I think thats the spirit of Luz, I love her.” In being at the forefront of a new generation of Latino actors and actresses, Yates feels it is important to show the reality of the makeup of this society, the multiculturalism that defines it more and more. This push for more minority characters with substance “is reflective of society, its true to society. I think its good for the young kids, and even adults. They, just as much as kids, have adjusted to that and the more we infuse it the more we embrace difference and change and that’s reflective in other issues, those that affect Latino culture, as well as those of other cultures. It allows room for discussion and I think thats’ really important.” Next up for Yvette Yates will be the comedy ensemble film, ‘Bloodsucking Bastards’ (sounds fun), which is the opening film for the 21st Slamdance Film Festival on January 23rd in Utah. You can see Yvette in theaters now as Luz in ‘Inherent Vice’.
