Cinthia Rodríguez EL OBSERVADOR La semana pasada asistí a una discusión sobre inmigración. Sé que voy a sonar cínica con las próximas frases pero denme la oportunidad y escúchenme. Bien, creo que es increíble que las personas se reúnan para hablar acerca de la inmigración pero siempre es el mismo punto. Ayudar a los residentes a convertirse en ciudadanos. ¿Qué pasa con las miles de personas que califican para permisos de trabajo a través de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA por sus siglas en ingles) o las personas que califican para otro tipo de visas? Yo estaba presente con mente abierta y presté

Es muy bueno que cada vez más personas se estén convirtiendo en ciudadanos, pero su trabajo no termina allí. Deben ejercer sus derechos e instar a su gobierno para ayudar a los demás. Esto significa que tienen que votar. Deben movilizarse. También me di cuenta de que hay una gran necesidad de tener más información a la disposición de nuestra comunidad inmigrante. En mi experiencia personal, mi tía compartió cierta información con mi madre acerca de su estado. Sus situaciones especiales han hecho posible que ella pueda solicitar la residencia. Todo el papeleo se ha hecho, las huellas digitales se han enviado y ahora está a la espera de esos nueve números. Hay tanta información. Las diferentes organizaciones que parecen estar luchando

la batalla por la reforma migratoria tienen que trabajar con todos los medios de comunicación y hacer llegar el mensaje. Necesitan prestar un poco más de atención a los que siguen indocumentados. A veces siento que hay un sentimiento de desesperanza, pero luego recuerdo que nuestra gente es más fuerte de lo que ellos mismos creen ser. No intento darles falsas esperanzas, sino más información y datos. Hágales saber que hay personas que quieren ver a todos firmar su ciudadanía tan esperada. La inmigración ha sido un tema candente desde que recuerdo. Estoy a favor de un proceso legal, pero siento que los miembros del Congreso sólo les gusta hablar de ello, pretender que van a hacer algo y siguen con su campaña. Lo que me da esperanza es que la gente sigue juntándose a exigir acción. Más personas tienen que estar presentes y participar en la lucha por sus derechos.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s civil rights legacy was celebrated on Monday, January 20, 2014. The traditional program began on time; Milan R. Balinton, Exec.Dir., AACSA, introduced the coMC’s Carl Davis, President, Silicon Valley Black Chamber of Commerce and Carolyn Green- Walker, National Council of Negro Women and Garden City Women’s Club. This report will focus on the keynote address. Dr. Hill is an award winning writer, a columnist and editor-atlarge for the Philadelphia Daily News. Of interest will be his book entitled FIRST CLASS JAILS; SECOND CLASS SCHOOLS to be published later this year. His research focuses on the intersections between culture, politics, and education. Dr. Hill began with a review of the U.S. Constitution as an ideal system of governance which is a ‘work in progress’ Slavery issues were addressed by President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (1863) 90 years after this nation accepted the principle that ‘all men are created equal Women obtained 19th Amendment voting rights (1922). President Roosevelt’s New Deal (1930’s) mitigated the impact of the Great Depression by forming the Social Security Administration, Works Progress Administration, FDA, FHA, etc. During World War II, African Americans served in segregated military units until President Truman decreed that its units be integrated. During all this the Negro was subject to Jim Crow laws curtailing vot-

What Dr. Martin Luther King did was to listen to the people. And he responded to their needs in a non-violent civil disobediance manner. His purpose was to ‘right the wrong’. His nonviolence approach required discipline and an ability to ‘love your neighbor’ in a meaningful Christian manner. Imagine….Rev. MLK being dropped brom the Baptist Ministry and Moorehouse College denied him a seat on their Board of Trustees because he is a bad radical influence’! Imagine the courage needed to face those police batons, dogs, and fire hoses while having already decided not to strike back at all. Nonviolence took personal commitment and discipline. Dr. King included Hispanics and Philipinos. He was against the Vietnam War. He listened to the people who were struggling. And for all his efforts, Dr. MLK was assassinated in 1968 shortly after he had delivered his ‘I Have A Dream’ speech where he compared American governance ideals to a promissory note which had not been fulfilled. It is still not being fulfilled today. In 2008, Obama was elected….the first African American to be elected President. And again by the people in 2012. Civil rights must be reviewed in today’s current context established by the vote of the people not once, but twice. President Obama has been listening to the people. He has identified their hopes and dreams. Are their dreams being fulfilled? Or are their dreams being deferred? Today, America’s middle class has become its underclass. It’s children go to bed hungry. The school dropout rate is 50% in some communities; as high as 75% in others.

This nation must educate all its children because “one of them will be our leader with ideals and leadership traits just like Dr. MLK!” Dr. King practiced “listening to people”. Understand that Dr. King asked this nation to deliver on its promissory note. It is due to all of us, not just a few of us. There is a national outbreak of poverty today. The ‘War on Poverty’ has become the ‘War on the Poor’. Dr. Hill asked, “Why is it so hard to get social programs funded? Funding for food stamps was curtailed along with housing, education, unemployment insurance, and health care was blocked. Corporate subsidies were continued. Hill’s point was that poor people must organize. All must have the bravery to speak their truth. Today Dr. MLK would not support any war in Afganistan or Syria. We must say ourthoughts even if it is not a popular thing to do. Visit the prisons; then support schools not prisons. Let’s fix the wrongs here; then elsewhere. We can do both, but let’s fix our communities first. Our children, begat under bad circumstances are still our responsibility to care for and raise. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM: TOO MANY INDIVIDUALS WHO DO NOTHING AND SAY NOTHING. Imagine changes needed. Then take responsible action. Address every wrong that exists in your communities: violence; drugs; no jobs; no housing; no access to personal opportunity; curtailed access to vote. The personal challenges faced by Dr. MLK still exist. Imagine his dream; then do something today. For his insightful remarks, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill received an extended standing ovation.

Aguascalientes MEXICO El Hospital Mexicano “Miguel Hidalgo”, en Aguascalientes, México, realizó exitosamente una cirugía para separar a unos siameses isquiópagos (unidos en la pelvis), una malformación muy poco común, pues se presenta un caso de este tipo por cada 500 mil siameses que nacen vivos. En conferencia de prensa, el doctor Rosendo Sánchez Anaya, Director Médico del Hospital y responsable del equipo multidisciplinario que llevó a cabo la cirugía, dijo que los siameses que compartían el mismo colon, recto y vejiga, se encuentran ahora en perfecto estado de salud.

Explicó que el procedimiento duró 9 horas y fue una cirugía de alta complejidad. Una vez separados, los pequeños permanecieron en el hospital durante dos meses. Actualmente, su estado neurológico y motor es bueno y los doctores esperan que tengan un desarrollo normal. El doctor Sánchez Anaya mencionó que los niños tienen un año y tres meses de edad y están en tratamiento ortopédico para poder juntar sus piernas y puedan empezar a caminar. El doctor destacó que todos los gastos de la cirugía fueron cubiertos por uno de los programas del cuidado de la salud del Gobierno de México llamado “Seguro Popular”.

El director médico del hospital mexicano “Miguel Hidalgo” mencionó que la institución cuenta con 200 camas censables, ofrece 90 mil consultas médicas cada año y realiza 8,000 cirugías. Este hospital mexicano atiende las necesidades de la población proveniente de tres estados de la República Mexicana: Zacatecas, Michoacán y San Luis Potosí. Asistieron a la conferencia de prensa el director del Programa de Trasplante de Riñón de Aguascalientes, Rafael Reyes Acevedo, y el Director de Comunicación Social de la Secretaría de Salud de Aguscalientes, Héctor Ruiz Esparza.

Monica Amador EL OBSERVADOR On Thursday, January 16, 2014, Pepsi Beverages Company of Hayward opened one of its state-of-the-art bottling plants to Latino business leaders and news media to highlight the beverage industry’s leadership in environmental stewardship, as well as its economic impact on the region. On hand to greet the attendees were Paul Turcotte, Greg Haskin, Lupe De La Cruz, Richard Montañez, representatives of PepsiCo., and Pedro Carrillo, American Beverage Association . The tour showcased hybrid trucks, which are a growing part of PepsiCo’s delivery fleet. The company operates the largest fleet of electric vehicles in the country, and recently launched a 105 electric vehicle deployment in California for Pepsi Beverages Company and Frito Lay. “Our company’s success in the state is based on responsiveness to California consumers and partnerships we’ve built with a diverse array of retailers and suppliers,” said Greg Haskin, Senior Director of Government

Relations for PepsiCo. “Our success also includes our commitment to producing and delivering products in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.” PepsiCo’s recycling and water conservation initiatives were also on full display throughout the tour. The packaging for beverage products is 100 percent recyclable—everything from the bottle to the caps to the boxes in which they are packaged. This is to reduce energy use and greenhouse gasses. As a result of initiatives such as these, beverage companies used 46 percent less packaging in 2006 than in 1990, despite an increase in sales. PepsiCo is a global food and beverage leader with a portfolio of brands that offers many choices to fit various lifestyles that includes Pepsi, Tropicana, Gatorade, Naked Juice, Sabra, Frito Lay and Quaker. All told, PepsiCo’s footprint in California includes 11 manufacturing plants plus an additional 60 locations for warehouses, distribution centers and regional offices. Pepsi provides an overall economic impact of $16.73

billion, $2.27 billion in wages annually, $2.35 billion in taxes to the state of California, $3.52 billion in taxes to the federal government and $42 million in charitable giving in California during 2012. PepsiCo employs more than 372 Hayward residents, and services more than 4,200 retailers. When combined with the PepsiCo-owned Gatorade production facility in nearby Oakland, the company’s regional employment numbers increase to 425. California’s non-alcoholic industry directly employs more than 26,000 Californians in production, bottling, distribution and other roles, and supports the employment of an additional 86,000 Californians in related industries such as food and beverage, entertainment and others. “PepsiCo strives to be a good community partner and works hard to be responsible to the needs of the consumer,” stated Richard Montañez. The Bay Area Gardeners Scholarship Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2014 Scholarship. The BAGSF Scholarship is open to all graduating high school seniors and college students from San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Since 2006, BAGSF has awarded 132 scholarships to students from diverse backgrounds and economic situations. Through education, students are searching a way to better their future and their families. BAGSF scholarships impact 20 students every year. Scholarships up to $1,500 are awarded to qualifying students to reach their dreams of higher education. An example of a dream turned reality is Agustin Valverde, a 2008 scholarship recipient who graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Civil Engineering.

when you approach your ill child, he or she will also worry about why you look so worried.

Winter greatly increases the odds for a young child to become ill. Whether a case of strep, a touch of flu, or simply the common cold, damp, chilly winter weather combined with lots of school contact with other children is the recipe for a sick child.

Similarly, instead of asking, “How are you feeling?” when you can see that the answer will be negative, offer some positive comments. Tell your child that he or she is looking a bit better, or maybe has some more color back, or seems a little cooler.

While most of us know the medical steps to take for a cold or the flu, too often we ignore the emotional things we can do to help our child get better. If you’ve ever heard your young child apologize for being ill, then you’ll begin to understand that kids often feel bad about feeling bad.

And don’t overlook the healing powers of hugs and cuddles. Plopping a sick child in front of the TV and checking in now and then is tempting, but offering physical contact that encourages positive feelings of comfort brings better results. Try putting him or her on your lap and reading a story. Do some drawing or coloring together. If there is some TV time, spend at least part of it with your child,

So, how to change that? Start by smiling. If you look too concerned and worried

holding hands or giving hugs while watching together. Also try to encourage healthy thinking. Our minds have the power to affect our bodies. Talk with your son or daughter about imagining feeling better and it can help them actually feel that way. You also need to listen to your child. Even if it’s just a tummy ache, encourage him or her to talk about it and you may discover some stress of the day being described that is the actual cause of the physical pain. None of us ever wants our child not feeling well. When illness does strike, try combining being a health care giver with being a loving, supportive person who encourages a positive attitude. It really can help your child feel healthier faster.

Getting enough sleep is very important. Recent scientific studies by biologist Maiken Nedergaard, University of Rochester Medical School, underscore its role in having good health. To many sleep seems to be a waste of time when work and other activities are more desirable. However, there is a role that sleep has in human physiological development and its evolution. For some time common sense established that sleep is essential for having wellness. Now it’s known that forming and consolidating memories happens during sleep. Sleep plays a central role in the formation of new nerves, repairs, and pruning. Sleep plays a crucial role in the physiology of one’s brain, its changes, and the ‘janitorial maintenance’ needed to remove ‘metabolic debris’ created by consuming 20% of your total body’s energy. While one is sleeping soundly, the brain’s janitorial functions are very busy cleaning up your brain’s house by removing its metabolic garbage. The brain’s thoughtful activities use 20% of the total body energy produced. Consider your physical exercise…. muscles get tired when too much lactic acid accumulates. Athletes need rest periods to allow the removal of metabolites such as lactic acid and carbon dioxide. Blood circulation is essential to this restoration recovery process in muscles. The same sort of process is now known to happen in the brain. It is done by the circulation of ‘lymph fluids’ in pathways whose existence is now es-

tablished by nuclear tracer technology at the molecular level. The lymphatic system is now appreciated as being the custodian that cleans up the brain after any strenuous workout. The metabolic litter in the brain is cleared out. Metabolites associated with Alzheimer’s diseasesuch as the protein beta-amyloid must be dealt with. Consider a pet fish tank. The air bubbler and filter must work continuously to provide oxygen and remove excrement. When these functions are impaired, the fish dies. Until recently, the brain was thought to clean itself by a recycling process within its brain cells. When that recycling process begins to fail, diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, become evident with the accumulation of beta-amyloid proteins. Biologist Nedergaard believes that the recycling process is not enough. The brain is too busy to recycle all of its metabolic byproducts. An established network of cerebrospinal fluids (spinal fluids) provided the circulation of lymph that cleans things out inorder to maintain a normal healthy environment within the brain. Special ‘glial cells’ are associated with this ‘glymphatic system’. Glial cells support the brain by protecting neurons and maintaining the proper metabolic environment(homeostasis). Using special fluorescent tracer dyes and advanced microscopy, Nedergaard’s research team defined the brain’s interstitial space networks (ISN) which amount to 20% of the total brain volume. The cerebrospinal fluid flows through these interstitial spaces and is devoted to the removal of noxious metabolic waste

products produced daily when one uses his/her brain. During sleep, these ISN’s continue to clean up and catch up so as to return the brain to its normal clean’ environment. Nedergaard believes that during sleep the brain is processing much information by reassessment process, and filing it in storage bins to create one’s memories, which can be recalled and used later on. Using the mouse brain as a model, it was established that during sleep the interstitial spaces increased from 5% to 20% of the brain’s volume. This facilitates the custodial maintenance and clean-out process. The ‘awake brain’ had only 5% flow rate compared to the ‘sleeping brain’s flow. Notably, the same procedures on baboons, dog and goat brains yielded similar results. Dr. Nedergaard and her colleague, Dr. Helene Benveniste, an anesthiology specialist, have asked for medical board approval to use volunteer (human) patients. Modern society’s peer pressure to be physically active too much of the time does not permit adequate sleep recovery time for one’s brain. The National Sleep Foundation’s available data show that 80% of working adults are afflicted with sleep deprivation. Adults should sleep 7 to 9 hours per day, a basic recommendation. Data reveal that working adults are getting 5 to 7 hours of sleep. Some 50 to 70 million Americans currently suffer from some form of chronic sleep disorder. Whatever causes us to sleep too little results in our brains not having enough time to clean up their internal house environment.

CALFORNIA El Dr. Ron Chapman, director del Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH, en inglés) y director médico del estado, ha anunciado hoy que el número de muertes relacionadas con la influenza confirmados hasta este momento en el estado ha aumentado a 45 para esta temporada, incluyendo dos muertes pediátricas. Esto constituye un aumento de 38 muertes desde el anuncio de la semana pasada.

Kaira Portillo SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR California is the state with the highest number of Salvadorans: 573,956 according to the 2010 census. After Mexicans, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans, Salvadorans make up the largest Latino population in the U.S. What initially caused such a massive wave of immigration from the smallest country in Central America, that has resulted in such a concentrated Salvadoran population? Unfortunately, it was a brutal 12 year-long civil war that pushed many families to rebuild their lives here in the Bay Area and beyond. Although other Latin American countries were also experiencing economic and political conflicts in the 1970s and 80s that was causing immigration to the U.S., the brutality and length of the Salvadoran civil war- which included the use of death squads, the recruitment of child soldiers, as well as many human rights violations carried out by the military set the stage for a mass exodus. Disturbingly, the U.S. Carter

and Reagan administrations invested millions of government aid, weapons, and military training to fuel the war: $5.7 million was allocated in 1980 alone! Two crucial events that drove many Salvadorans out of the violent country was when Archbishop Romero was assassinated while giving mass (March 24, 1980) and when, at his funeral a week later, government-sponsored snipers opened fire on mourning citizens in which 42 people died from being shot or trampled! It is still not known exactly how many people “disappeared”, but official UN reports document that at least 75,000 people were killed in this vicious war that lasted from 1980 to 1992. During the 1980s, the Bay Area had a blossoming Latino community, mostly made up of Mexicans and recent immigrants from other Central American countries. But as the civil war in El Salvador kept escalating, so did immigration to the U.S. And as more families followed their networks, more and more Salvadorans came to call the

Bay Area home. I was one of those kids who was born and raised here after my parents fled the horrors of this war. I remember my mom telling me about the piles of dead bodies she’d see on her way to school in the morning and the fear she felt at hearing the curfew bell at night, knowing she would be instantly killed if the military caught her out on the street. It was not until I attended college and took an Ethnic Studies course, that I was able to deeply grasp the historical context and significance of my personal immigrant family reality. As I sat there reading the statistics and historical facts, I connected the dots as to why so many Salvadoran youth in the U.S. had got caught up in gangs. War, trauma, poverty, and immigration cause so many ripple effects on families and communities. It was also this college class, “Latinos in the U.S.,” that opened my eyes to one very important similarity, not only among all us Latinos, but also with immigrants from any other country in the world: the struggle for a fair economic and political system is paramount.

Varios grupos del sur de la bahía se reunieron frente a la oficina de ciudadanía y servicios de inmigración de los Estados Unidos; localizada en Santa Clara. Más de 100 miembros de la comunidad, miembros de sindicatos, el clero y los estudiantes, se unieron para también presentar su propio mensaje. Exigieron que el presidente detenga las deportaciones que separa a familias. “Es tiempo de que cumpla con su promesa de darnos una reforma migratoria integral”, dijo Salvador Bustamante, integrante de Latinos Unidos por una Nueva América. “Estamos en el segundo periodo de la administración Obama y en lugar de una reforma migratoria lo que recibimos es una póliza de deportaciones draconiana donde están deportando mas de mil personas por día”. “Queremos que se tomen procedimientos humanitarios para que la gente sea capaz de convertirse en ciudadanos aquí en los Estados Unidos a partir de ahora y no hay”, dijo Laurie Mesa, directora de asuntos comunitarios, United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 5. “Está tomando demasiado tiempo. Veronica Taylor Ramirez EL OBSERVADOR “190 thousand permanent residents are eligible to legalize in Santa Clara County,” said Vanessa Sandoval, Director of Immigration Legal Services for Services, Immigrant Rights, Education Network or SIREN at the first ethnic media immigration roundtable. Ethnic media and community organizers were invited to participate in an immigration roundtable on Friday, Jan. 17 in San Jose. The roundtable hosted by New American Media, New American Campaign, SIREN, and the National Immigration forum, focused on helping Bay Area immigrants become citizens. The speakers featured were from local organizations: SIREN, Silicon Valley De-Bug, Asian Law Alliance (ALA), Self Help for the Elderly, International Rescue Committee (IRC), and the Bethlehem Project. Sandoval said of those 190 thousand eligible only eight percent take the steps needed to naturalize. The New American Campaign aims to reduce the barriers for people to naturalize. The main barrier cited in the discussion is cost. The U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) naturalization application fee is $680. Sandoval said for those on fixed incomes the application fee could be the equivalent of a month’s income.

“Most of the clients that come to our offices and to our events qualify for the immigration fee waiver,” said Bea Pangilinan of the ALA. “That means that their incomes fall well below the U.S poverty level.” Private attorneys and other legal services may charge up to thousands of dollars for immigration services. The New American campaign saved clients over a half a million dollars by providing them with the USCIS fee waiver, a waiver that they said “most do not even know exists.” “Another barrier that we see is just a general fear. They [eligible permanent residents] don’t know what to expect when they naturalize, they don’t know what documents to produce,” said Pangilinan. At a previous event, Pangilinan met a woman who received her green card in the 60s yet had not applied to naturalize because she was unsure of what resources are available and what the process entailed. The speakers also said another reason for not naturalizing is the misconception that permanent residency status is permanent. “If you leave the country for more than 6 months at a time you can abandon your residency and lose your status. If you commit certain crimes you can be deported,” said Sandoval. “Even though we call it permanent

residency it’s most definitely not permanent in the sense that it can be revoked.” Amir Music, Senior Immigration Coordinator for the IRC said, “The biggest challenge is lack of information. They just don’t know about the possibilities.” One possibility that Music referred to is the option of taking the naturalization exam in a native language if the permanent resident has been in the country for many years. “One of the huge barriers to citizenship is that you have to be competent in English, you have to take an English exam, you’re actually questioned, you’re interviewed, you’re interrogated by an USCIS officer” said Sandoval. The campaign provides CDs, the 100 exam questions to make exam takers feel “empowered and prepared for their interview.” “Citizenship is what empowers people to become full fledged members of their communities, to contribute and to participate, not only in voting. But we have seen that naturalized citizens have become much more motivated, have less fear, and participate in their local community,” said Sandoval. The next event hosted by the New American Campaign is a Free Citizenship workshop Wednesday Jan. 29 at the Berryessa Community Center, 3050 Berryessa Rd. in San Jose.

As announced at a press conference in November 2013, organized labor and veterans service organizations (VSOs) will be coordinating their activities at the state capitol in support of each other’s agendas. “Veterans have always been welcome to become members of different labor unions and have always been supportive of each others agendas” stated Pete Conaty, a veteran and governmental advocate for over 20 veterans and military organizations at the state capital. “Only now we will make it official.” Presently, VSOs and labor unions are working off of a seven point policy platform that involves legislation, jobs and service projects. California is home to the highest number of veterans in the country and home to the highest number of recent Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. The number of the current generation of veterans in California is numbered at over 200,000 and is expected to grow as the war in Afghanistan winds down. As part of the service project effort during the week before and after Veterans Day last year, work parties of union members, many of who were veterans themselves, went to selected VFW, American Legion and AMVETS Posts around the state. They used their skills to make improvements at aging Post facilities. “They were really helpful in upgrading and cleaning up our facility” stated Sacramento AMVETS Post 1 Commander Chris Hoffman. “And they are continuing to work on projects at our Post.” “This will be a win - win formal partnership between veterans service organizations and organized labor” said Lorraine Plass, Legislative Chairperson for AMVETS, Department of California. “Currently VSOs and labor may meet in Sacramento during March to begin formalizing this partnership” state Conaty. Boba Fett arrives at The Tech Museum of Innovation, museum announces worldwide exhibition is extended

México (NOTIMEX) Salvador Dalí, pintor controversial, irreverente, delirante y vanguardista, que en su tiempo fue fuertemente criticado y que hoy en día es admirado, es motivo de homenajes, en lo que es recordado a 25 años de su muerte. Salvador Dalí vio la primera luz el 11 de Mayo del 1904, en Figueres, Girona, Cataluña, en el seno de un hogar liderado por Felipa Domènech Ferrés y Salvador Dalí Cusí, quien se desempeñaba como notario y poseía una posición de influencia política y social. A los cuatro años, el pequeño Salvador inició su formación académica en la Escuela Pública en Figueroa, no obstante mostró aversión desde los primeros años de estudio, por lo que su padre los envió a una escuela privada cuyas clases eran en francés, idioma que adoptó para expresarse profesionalmente, aunque también dominó el catalán y el español. En los veranos, la familia se trasladaba al pueblo costero de Cadaqués, donde Salvador pintaba y conoció al artista impresionista Ramón Pichot (1871-1925), con quien estudió arte, señala la biografía del pintor surrea-

lista disponible en el sitio electrónico “philamuseum. org”.Tiempo después, Pichot convenció al padre de Dalí de que le permitirá ingresar a la a Academia de Arte de San Fernando en Madrid, donde pudo desarrollar su propuesta artística y conoció a Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) y Luis Buñuel (1900-1983), con quienes años después colaboraría. En ese periodo, el joven artista experimentó con varios estilos de pintura de la vanguardia, principalmente con el Cubismo, el Futurismo y el Purismo, que aprendió a través de reproducciones en los diarios de arte. No obstante, su estancia en la academia fue corta, pues al año siguiente fue expulsado por encabezar una protesta estudiantil contra la no concesión al pintor Daniel Vázquez Díaz, por lo que tuvo que regresar a su tierra natal, donde fue instruido en grabado por Juan Núñez. Sus primeras obras las mostró en galerías de Barcelona y Madrid y en 1926 viajó a París, Francia, ciudad en la que conoció a Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). En los siguientes años, exhibió sus obras surrealistas en diversas partes del mundo, tales como Estados Unidos, Francia y Londres, y colaboró con libreto, el vestuario y los decorados del ballet “Bacchanale”, estrenado en el Metropolitan Opera House de Nueva York. En los siguientes años, su obra fue motivo de retrospectivas y el artistas recibió diversos galardones, además varios recintos tomaron su nombre, ejemplo de ello es el Museo Dalí en Cleveland (Ohio) y Teatro-Museo Dalí de Figueres. Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EARTHTALK President Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum in April 2010 establishing the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to promote and support innovative community-level efforts to conserve outdoor spaces and reconnect Americans to the outdoors. The Memorandum calls for collaboration among the Departments of Interior and Agriculture as well as the Environmental Protection Agency and the White House’s own Council on Environmental Quality in leading the initiative. Eight other federal agencies play a supporting role—and literally thousands of other partners from state, local and tribal governments, nonprofits and the private sector are involved as well. Getting young people, especially city kids, into the outdoors to experience our country’s unique natural heritage is a top priority of America’s Great Outdoors. Before pursuing any specific strategies, initiative leaders solicited feedback from everyday Americans as to what mattered most to them regarding conservation and access to the outdoors. Some 105,000 written comments and many more spoken ones from “listening sessions” held

coast to coast streamed in and were crucial to the development of programs. Public feedback continues to shape the initiative’s agenda. Some of the programs that fall under the umbrella of America’s Great Outdoors include: the Veterans Fire Corps, which employs veterans in forest fire management; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s program providing technical training and work opportunities for underserved youth in habitat restoration and fisheries monitoring; and the establishment of a new network of “water trails” coast to coast to increase everyone’s access to the outdoors. America’s Great Outdoors was in the news recently when Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced the launch of 21st Century Conservation Service Corps as part of the program. “21CSC,” as Jewell calls it, aims to be a modern incarnation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that President Franklin Roosevelt used to help put Americans back to work during the Great Depression. Jewell envisions a 100,000 person strong “CCC 2.0” that will provide opportunities for thousands of young Americans—6.7 million of whom are currently unemployed or not in school—and veterans

transitioning back to civilian life to serve their country, feel proud of what they are accomplishing and improve their own lives and the lives of others around them. Part of what makes America’s Great Outdoors unique is that partners from every sector of American society— not just the federal government—are encouraged to help. 21CSC is partially funded by a $1 million dollar donation from clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters, and Jewell is in search of another $19 million from other private sector partners to turn the program into a potent force for reducing youth and veteran unemployment while giving our endangered lands and waterways some much-needed attention. Environmentalists may be disappointed that the Obama administration hasn’t been able to muscle through mandatory greenhouse gas emissions cuts and put sustainability concerns at the forefront of the policymaking process, but getting unprecedented numbers of Americans involved in conservation projects that protect the nation’s treasured natural heritage is a worthy conservation legacy in its own right. The program is sure to positively impact generations of Americans for decades to come.

Yosvani’s passion, however, can not make Reiner stay. Reiner has an opportunity to play soccer at a higher level, which is an opportunity that most in his situation would dream of. He dismisses Yosvani’s ideas of starting a life together.
