Gov. Brown signs into law bipartisan effort to combat child-sex trafficking / On Sunday the 28th Gov. Brown signed into law a bipartisan plan by Sen. Ted Lieu to strengthen penalties imposed on buyers and sellers of minors for sex. “Instead of going after those who sell the sex, we can now go after those who buy the sex,” Lieu, D-Redondo Beach, said about Senate Bill 1388, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2015. “The message now is clear: If you purchase sex, especially from a minor, then you will be prosecuted, fined and put in jail because our children are not for sale. the ‘mid-term election’ on tuesday, november 4, 2014 is an opportunity for local Hispanic-Latino citizens to vote. the basic question is ‘are you better off as a liberal or as a conservative’? Democrats control the Ca State assembly with a majority vote in both the Senate and assembly. it is the legislative process which allocates tax revenues to fund programs/ projects which, in turn, assist people. Why review all this? Because Hispanics have never voted their full potential. therefore Hispanics have not infl uenced public policy to the extent possible. By personal choice, Hispanics are no one’s constituents; as a community, they chose ‘not to be engaged’. Recall that in the recent Supervisor District 2 election, where voters chose between Ms. Cindy Chavez or Ms. teresa alvarado, only one of six eligible registered Hispanic voters, exercised his/ her choice by actually voting. today it is essential to see four (4) of six (6) Hispanic voters vote. this should be possible with 70% getting ‘Vote-by-Mail’ ballots. these voters can vote early before november 4th. Will you select a mayor who has a relationship with the Latino Community? Will you elect more Latinos to the San Jose City Council. it could be possible to have as many as 3 Latinos seated on the San Jose City Council. and why not? Latinos have the numbers; Latinos have just not exercised their voting potential. When we do,

nothing will change without your vote. this election, like all others, is the ultimate poll that really counts. Without your personal vote being tallied, there is no infl uence as a constituent on the public polices which are enacted. When you chose not to vote, you chose not to take your place in the democratic decision making process. you are complicit without knowing that you helped create the current status quo. if corporations can speak with their money, you must speak with your vote. that is what corporate special interests cannot do: Vote! and, you outnumber them at the polls. What good is being the largest Hispanic ethnic group if its citizens do not vote? By not voting, all are complicit in the wrongful outcomes that have been chosen by doing nothing; by standing on the sidelines while elected offi cials chosen by others make decisions which impact your family and children. Most importantly, by not voting you have denied the true majority, the authority to act in the interests of the majority, which wants to do the greatest good for the greatest number. Latinos tend to focus upon their differences which defi ne their cliques. it is time to focus upon common traits: your Spanish surname & language, culture, value system, and history of civic evolution. if you could, and would focus upon these potential bonds of relationships....on what you like, then it is possible to achieve solidarity. Differences of opinion do not matter over the long run if you remain respectful, tolerant,

Major issues are impacted by these ideologies, (Public policy regarding unemployment benefi ts, welfare assistance to the disabled, homeless and needy and, medical care, tax reform, immigration reform, reform of ‘law & order’) as adjudicated by judges we elect. Community safety and security are determined locally....all are impacted by your personal vote. Politics begin at local levels. While money may be the ‘mother’s milk of politics’, it is your personal vote which, when counted with all others, becomes the ‘authoritative poll’ that guides this community. its impact ripples up through county, state, nation, and then the world. it is the power and authority of ‘We, the People’ which is defi ned when voters actually do vote and it’s used to empower the thrust of public policy: ConSeRVatiVe oR LiBeRaL. the Hispanic ‘swing vote’ can change the course of our city’s public policy, only when its latent power is expressed in the large numbers required, to direct this community’s leaders according to its expressed choices. By voting, the many choices made are enumerated which impact taxes, programs, projects, the economy, funding for education, medical and social services....and much more. Pero la verdad, la verdad es que deberíamos, en justicia, estar mucho mejor. nuestra comunidad, la hispana, lleva desventaja en muchos rublos, y el problema es, que de seguir así, no es gran cosa lo que le espera a nuestros hijos, a propósito de la herencia hispana. Cerrando el mes en el que celebramos lo que somos, lo que nos identifi ca, lo hemos signifi cado en la prosperidad y el desarrollo de este país, es justo hacer un balance. ya hemos hablado de la discriminación de la que somos víctimas con bastante más frecuencia de la que cualquier comunidad debe tolerar. y hemos hablado también de las desventajas económicas que afectan a muchos de los nuestros, sobre todo a aquellos que deben permanecer en las sobras, a pesar de ser trabajadores honestos y dedicados por aquello de la reforma que no ha sido. y claro, hemos hablado de la reforma que aun esperamos que sea, y hasta ahí, la balanza no nos favorece y en asuntos de educación y prevención en salud tampoco salinos ganando. y las últimas noticias no son tampoco alentadoras, para cerrar con broche de oro las celebraciones del mes de la herencia hispana, el Centro de investigaciones Pew nos

La realidad que los políticos que elegimos siguen avalando con su falta de acción. De acuerdo con el informe expuesto por el Centro de investigaciones, datos recientemente revelados por el Censo, dan cuenta, además, de que los inmigrantes hispanos tienen dos veces más posibilidades de no tener acceso a seguro de salud que los hispanos nacidos en estados Unidos. Los datos son frescos, están fechados en marzo de este año y revelan además que el 14 por ciento de la población estadounidense no tiene seguro de salud. entre los hispanos que no tienen seguro, 7 millones son inmigrantes y 6 nacieron en estados Unidos. ¿Qué

quiere decir eso? Que no es gran cosa la diferencia entre los hispanos que han venido y los que han nacido aquí, cuando de desventajas se trata, claro. otro dato, cerca de la mitad de los inmigrantes hispanos que no son ciudadanos americanos carece de seguro de salud. ni que decir de aquellos que no han podido ajustar su estatus. De nuevo, ¿Qué signifi ca eso? Signifi ca que nuestra población no tiene acceso a medicina preventiva, a información especializada y culturalmente correcta sobre los riesgos que enfrenta su salud. Signifi ca que careciendo de acceso a medicina preventiva, nuestra comunidad es mucho más proclive a padecer de enfermedades cardiacas, diabetes e hipertensión, para citar solo algunas de las enfermedades que tienen relación directa con el estilo de vida y la alimentación en general. y signifi ca también que muchas familias hispanas padecen por la falta de atención médica y, lo que es peor, por el miedo de necesitarla. esa es nuestra realidad. La que solo podremos cambiar en las urnas, claro si sabemos bien a quien darle nuestro voto y pensamos bien en la herencia que queremos dejarle a nuestros hijos.

San Jose CALIFORNIA The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) was recently selected as one of the beneficiaries of Destination Imagination’s Motorola Solutions Foundation Grant, receiving $15,000 to enhance STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education. The grant will be utilized to fund 40 teams across the county, with priority given to schools that are new to Destination Imagination and/or those that are Title I. Destination Imagination, Inc., an educational nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching

This honor means the Pioneer High senior is in the running for some 800 achievement scholarship awards worth more than $2.5 million. The National Achievement Scholarship Program, founded to honor and provide scholarships to academically promising Black American students,

Sabía que, probablemente, debería durar hasta que mis hijos estuvieran en la universidad, y por eso me dediqué a investigar cómo pagar menos por un auto confiable que me gustara. Hice miles de investigaciones y finalmente acoté mi búsqueda a dos modelos: Ford Fusion y Honda Accord. Hice las pruebas de manejo y hasta convencí a dos de los vendedores para que me

Community leaders sound off in support of Measure Q Measure Q is a $24 parcel tax that would give the Open Space Authority funding for resources to carry out its purpose of preserve the natural environment within Santa Clara County

Measure Q is a $24 parcel tax that would give the open Space authority funding for resources to carry out its purpose of preserve the natural environment within Santa Clara County. if passed, the parcel tax would generate approximately 7,883,760 per year over a set 15 year time span. “the funding that comes from Measure Q, 120 mil-

lion dollars, over 15 years will go to infuse the health and sustainability of the fastest growing county in California by continuing our open space preserves and trails, growing them in the unincorporated areas, investing in our cities and making sure that our public continues to have the high quality of life that we have enjoyed,” said andrea Mackenzie, the open Space authority’s General Manager. Mackenzie said 25 percent of the funds received from the measure will be reinvested back into participating cities. the authority mapped out 30 high priority projects across its county jurisdiction ranging from restoring the San Francisco Baylands, improving county farmland, to maining local trails. the measure’s core focus derives from priorities listed in the Santa Clara Valley Greenprint. the priorities are grouped in four catego-

ries; preserving the region’s natural heritage, increasing public access to open spaces, protecting water supplies and providing easier access to open spaces with environmental education opportunities. educational opportunities are what sparked Sergio Jimenez, San Jose Parks and Recreation Commissioner, interest in the measure. east San Jose raised Jimenez joked that his only view of open space growing up was his concrete patio outside of his apartment complex. “i never had exposure to large areas of open space, i didn’t know what nature was,” said Jimenez. Jimenez said there are children in the county who have never had the opportunity to experience nature or any form of open space that is easily accessible. the measure has received a hefty list of supporters ranging from elected offi cials at

a state and local level, said Gloria Chun Hoo, President of League of Women Voters in Santa Clara County. “Business groups tend to not want taxes,” said Chun Hoo. Chun Hoo announced one of Measure Q’s most recent endorsements, the San Jose Chamber of Commerce. though the measure has received numerous support, it has a long time critic-the Silicon Valley taxpapers association. in 2008, the association won a lawsuit over the authority’s special assessment. though the courts ruled that the authority violated the provisions of Proposition 218, only 25 percent of taxpayers asked for their money back. ASTRONAUT José Hernandez

On September 30th NASA Astronaut José Hernández was present at an East Side San José school recently named after him, Alpha Public Middle School José Hernández. His intention was to celebrate his namesake by providing the students of the school, which specializes in mathematics and technology, with worthwhile advice on achieving goals, no matter how far away they seem. As one of four children in a farm working family, José worked alongside his family and other farm workers throughout the fields of California, harvesting crops and moving from one town to another. As he described in his address to the children and family, media and staff at the school, he worked in the hot sun, even 7 days a week during the summer “break”. In March they’d start the harvest, going to school Monday through Friday, and work weekends with their parents, eventually having to leave, just as they were getting accustomed to their new schools. His father once asked José and his siblings how they were feeling, when they had just gotten off a shift in the fields. They responded,

‘tired’. Their father shot back with “That’s great. Remember this feeling. You guys have this advantage of living your future now.” Puzzled, José pushed for what his father meant. His father responded saying that what they were living now, at that time, was what their future had in store for the 4 children if they didn’t get an education. “I was about ten years old wondering what it was I was gonna do when I grew up”. Soon enough that would be answered. In 1972 he watched the last Apollo mission to the moon alongside his family. As the broadcast went on, he ran outside to look up at the moon. Among the Astros he envisioned the men on the television, a quarter million miles above him and the rest of the world. He went to and fro, television set to looking up to the sky, before realizing this was his calling. “I went inside and saw and heard Eugene Cernan talking to mission control in Houston. Went outside and saw the moon again, and I was hooked.” At that point he recanted his dreams to his father, who sat him in their kitchen, usually only reserved for doing homework, eating, or stern talking-to. He’d already done the first two, so he expected his father to be upset with him. Ultimately, his father

explained that in order to become an astronaut he had to make a plan. José knew that being a farm worker already set him back many steps in his plan, but his father encouraged him to understand this was a blessing in disguise. For if he knew this about himself, knew what it was like to perform the hard labor, that studying and reaching his academic goals would be difficult but definitely worth the effort. “Always deliver more than what people expect”. It would help Jose Hernandez towards his goal in getting to the stars. After much hard work he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Paciﬁc in 1984, and an M.S.in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1986. He attended many schools and didn’t learn to speak English until he was 12. In 2004, after 12 years of applying, he was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate. Five years later Hernandez’s dream came true when he rocketed into space as a crew member of the 128th shuttle mission, and the 30th mission to the International Space Station. Today, with his foundation, Reaching for the Stars, he inspires thousands of children around the world to follow their dreams.

Arturo Hilario eL oBSeRVaDoR Sonya Cotero arriola’s passion for education extends from her experiences as a fi rst generation Latina carving her path within the fi eld, and her desire to help kids unlock their potentials. as President of the co-institutional Sacred Heart nativity Schools, housing both an all boys and all girls school, she recounts how her journey led her to this place. arriola’s father was part of the 1940’s Bracero program, in which he worked while many of the able-bodied men were in the war effort. He traveled to different states and that’s how he initially wound up in the Bay area. after heading back to Mexico he would later relocate back to Marin to start a life with his family, including Sonya. Her family played tennis on the weekends, which in her world of growing up Latino in Marin County, was a rarity. While watching the nCaa Stanford vs. Florida Women’s tennis fi nal at age 8, (Stanford ultimately won), she made a decision about the course of her future, then and there. “Mama, when i grow up i’m gonna go to Stanford and i’m gonna play tennis there”. Her mother supported her daughters decision, telling Sonya to get the grades needed; that they’d fi gure out how to pay for school when the time came. Both her parents felt strongly about their daughters receiving an education, “the only herencia, (inheritance), we can give you is your education…and that’s what they gave me.” after achieving her goal of getting into Stanford and playing tennis for them, she had to deal with college like

many of the fi rst generation students. “Like a fi rst-gen kid, i wandered my way through, not really knowing what i was doing.” the struggles of navigating the unknown in college helped formulate what she wanted to do within the education spectrum. Soon after getting her education arriola was determined to fi gure out how someone like herself, the daughter of immigrants, working-class people, got into college, and how these tactics could be replicated for future Latino students. at Stanford, her last two years of research focused specifi cally on Latino kids. then at Harvard’s Graduate School of education while studying for her Masters, she was in a risk and prevention program where she was looking at data on what made these kids succeed. She continued her pursuits at UC Berkley, landing back in the Bay area. after she was done with her schooling, she entered the corporate world of consulting until her child was born. after a couple of years, the perfect opportunity arose for her to practice what she preached, working at Bellarmine College Preparatory. at Bellarmine she did outreach in a student and parent support program for college bound students. “i saw the effects of the nativity education. i saw the results. We saw the challenges that kids had in college prep school and worked towards addressing the challenges, which ran the gamut.” tuition for this private school is with parents paying $45 dollars a month, or $540 a year for the quality education and programs which can be seen as a framework for success. the average annual income for students’ household is $34,000 a year. the cost to educate every

child is signifi cantly higher than $540, around $15,000 a year. Part of this is the cost of keeping the students in an extended learning day, which runs from 7:30am6:00pm, as well as retreats, and summer programs. according to arriola, Sacred Heart’s programs promote growth, advocacy and “instilling the basic belief that they will go to college. it’s just a matter of what they want when they’re there.” Five factors to how she sees success in education: academically, spiritually, tech literacy, co-curricular and life skills. one of the most indicative of growth and positive spiritual philosophy is within life skills. By helping build relationships through school trips, discussion and faith exercises, formation experiences help create a strong foundation for the students to be able to analyze their own feelings and decision-making. the ignacion framework being utilized asks for one to listen to their heart. “When our heart is light and peaceful it’s at work. it’s the path where i’m drawn to. if my heart is troubled in a scenario, maybe it’s not worth it. How do we teach our kids that? Wouldn’t that be an amazing framework for decision making?” these tools are being used to help the children of the school get prepared for college and life in general. this is a place where upward mobility is a true goal. Sonya’s thoughts also lie in the future. Her vision is to insure a quality education at low cost to families. “Lowincome kids deserve to go to a catholic school if they want to. and we have to make sure that we’ll be around to provide that. i hope and pray, and wish, that the number of low-income families in California will not grow. Unless there are some radical

changes in society, we will always have a low-income presence.” the late Pastor Mateo Sheedy of Sacred Heart Parish had many dreams of change; one was to give a good catholic education to low-income students. although he is gone, his dream lives on in people like the ones working at Sacred Heart. the dream lives in Sonya’s vision for the school and her collaboration with her staff, in the students from the Washington neighborhood who are defying statistics. there is a formula there and it’s allowing these students, many fi rst generation Latinos in this country, to become self-suffi cient and go to college without the boundaries that are generally found in this community.

This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

Do iPhone 6’s bend and, if so, is it Apple’s problem?

His message was clear – if it doesn’t work when you hold it that way, don’t hold it that way! It was not the message new iPhone 4 owners were expecting, but it was prescient.

Sadly for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners, it does not bend back.

Unless you were off planet (or not paying attention in class) this past week, you’ve probably heard that the iPhone 6 has a “form-fitting” case that will shape itself to match your backside – if you keep the device in your back pocket. In other words… it bends.

Mobile devices are fashion accessories, we’ve already proved it!” Self-hypnosis is one thing, but making buyers of $400-$950 smartphones

The shareholder value and the cash had to come from somewhere. While we wait for Apple to offer a solution (as opposed to a non-explanation or flat out denial), we can pass the time by considering all possible meanings of the phrase “bend over.” It’s what Steve would have wanted us to do.

However, several scientists now believe the idea has real potential. Scott and Julie Brusaw came up with the idea eight years ago as a way to reduce greenhouse gases. their company, Solar Roadways, builds glasstopped solar panels that can withstand the weight and wear of trucks and heavy traffi c. Simultaneously, these panels will produce electricity for revenue and possibly for charging electric vehicles. Moreover, LeD lights inside panels create road markers and even produce advertisements. Despite facing a large amount of initial skepticism, mass-produced solar roads have the potential to cut nearly 75 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. the project has received federal grants, as well as $2 million in fundraising on indieGoGo. However, mass production of these solar panels still faces many complications. the panels are extremely complicated, with three different bases. the fi rst layer is the road surface—the glass is bulletproof, ridged to

provide traction but translucent to pass sunlight to solar cells. Underneath this is the microprocessor board for sensing loads on the surface and controlling heating elements. the heating elements are necessary in order to melt snow and ice, or else the solar panels cannot absorb the sun’s energy. this in itself poses complications, but could potentially result in the collection of freshwater through a purifi cation runoff system. Finally, the third layer is the base plate, which distributes the solar power and data signals to homes and businesses connected to the roadway. this complicated process means that one panel is estimated to cost up to $5000. So far, the Brusaws have been building these panels by hand. Mass production of the panels, therefore, would be extremely expensive. Scott Brusaw has yet to release just how expensive the project would be. Some critics wonder why solar panels should be placed on the road, rather than easier, safer places such as roofs, sidewalks, etc. the roof, for example, would have less shadow. Shadows pose another question. according to an article in the magazine Renewable international, even a small amount

of shade on one solar panel reduces the effi ciency of the entire stretch. Cars, trees and surrounding buildings, of course, constantly shadow roads. Critics therefore wonder if the possible ineffi ciency is worth the cost of mass production. another point of criticism comes from the remote aspect of LeDs. the ability to change lane directions to provide for better traffi c fl ow during rush hour, provide road markers and produce advertisements is very benefi cial. However, this also provides the opportunity for hacking and even worst-case scenarios of chaos if anyone can change lane patterns. Despite these possible complications, the potential is extreme. according to Dr. Pradeep Haldar, solar power and photovoltaic expert at albany’s College of nanoscale Science and engineering, “if you just did it for all the roads in new york, that would be enough to power all of the electricity we need in new york State.” of course, we all want to believe in the possibility of solar-powered roadways. environmentalists hope that further research and funding will help turn the dream of solar roadways into a carbon footprint reducing reality.
