This latest milestone along with the completion of the Upper Penitencia Creek Improvement Project last year, marks fulfillment of environmental mitigation requirements related to the construction of the 10-mile, two station Berryessa Extension Project. The purpose of these mitigation projects is to lessen construction impacts to wetlands and other aquatic resources. The mitigation included creek restoration, erosion repair, removal of a critical fish passage barrier and floodplain expansion.

Milpitas Mayor Jose Esteves Recognized for Outstanding Service to Local Library The Honorable Jose Esteves, Mayor of Milpitas, was recently recognized as the 2013 Elected Official for Outstanding Service to a Local Library by California Public Library Advocates (CPLA). Mayor Esteves’ contributions to the Milpitas Library and the Santa Clara County Library District were honored at the California Library Association annual conference in Long Beach, California on Monday, November 4, 2013. Beginning in 2002, Mayor Esteves was instrumental in overseeing the funding and construction of a new library in Milpitas, which was completed in 2009.

San Francisco 49er Navorro Bowman spreads Christmas cheer to innercity communities A leader both on and off the field, San Francisco 49ers’ ace linebacker, Navorro Bowman, will link with two non-profit organizations housed in the Hunters Point District, Bayview YMCA and Urban Ed Academy, to spread Christmas cheer to 200 disadvantaged kids. As a product of the Boys & Girls Club in Prince George County (Maryland), Bowman is eager to lend a helping hand to those in the Hunters Point District who are socioeconomically challenged, having been raised in a similar environment. Today, Friday, November 29, 2013 is ‘Black Friday’ which is when Christmas shopping season begins. This commentary is about Black Friday being the symbol of American consumerism. A premise is that Henry Ford was the first entrepreneur who consciously developed consumerism when his Ford Motor Company employees were given a $5 raise.

Business economists of that era were dumbfounded. His logic was simple. If employees earn enough to purchase a Model T Ford, sales increase; Ford’s assembly line must produce more vehicles; suppliers get larger parts orders; distributors meet demand, etc. Eventually, business analysts of that era understood and began the development of American consumerism.

The next major cycle of consumerism happened after World War II (1945) when 13,000,000 military personnel came home; began families; needed single family homes; etc. And they had consumerism support from federal government policy via the GI Bill which enabled a higher level of training/education; home loans; and small business loans. Also, the Marshall Plan financed the rebuilding of the war ravaged national economies of former enemies and allies in Europe and Asia. The outcomes were high domestic employment and productivity.

‘Middle class living’ was good and enjoyed by many. Everybody, individuals and corporations alike, paid their fair share of taxes which were used to fund the infrastructure (roads, harbors, airports, air traffic control, etc.) which was needed for both commerce and civilian activities. In addition much basic research was undertaken re-

Around 1975 things began to change. The ‘Boomer Generation’ began to make development and profits their primary goal. The living standard of middle class American workers began to see the production of goods shifted to overseas locations where costs of labor was much lower. And modern shipping systems enabled the shipping of goods so their arrival was in time to restock retail stores. Middle class wages stagnated; corporations began to treat skilled labor as a commodity to be discarded when a less costly alternative was available. Robots began to replace humna labor on assembly lines. Skilled labor was obtained from other nations using H-1B Visas.

Government policy to guide and influence employment and economic development began to fall under the control of those special interests seeking increased ‘profits’ and less regulation. These special interests focused on their stakeholder’s bottomline.

Commercial advertisement promotions now used not only newspapers and radio, but also television and the internet. Ebay, Amazon, and other internet retailers began to undercut the local retail chains of Sears, J.C. Penny, and Montgomery Ward. Christmas transitioned from the celebration of the birth of Christ to a very commercialized retailing event which promoted consumerism by promoting gifts giving. And Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, was designated the beginning of each year’s Christmas shopping spree which displayed the American consumer economy to be the envy of the world.

So where is the American middle class today? Since the Clinton Administration, which forwarded a budget surplus to the next Bush Admiinistration, corporations have thrived, but the individual skilled person

has not. Corporations have produced many low entry level jobs which do not provide enough income to support a family.

This 2013 year, certain retailers, such as WalMart, decided to be open all day Thanksgiving Day! A revelation was that their ‘associates’ earned only $17,700 per year, which is below the $22,000 federal poverty level. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reported that certain WalMart stores were asking their ‘associates’ to donate to fellow associates who had not earned enough to celebrate Thanksgiving with the customary turkey dinner.

Even fast-food outlets like McDonald’s are experiencing their employees asking for higher wages which enable a “middle class living standard”.

Such a standard permits the head of a family to pay for essentials needed (rent/ mortgage, food, clothing, education/training; tithing; recreation, health care, retirement savings, hobbies, etc.).

Today redistribution of wealth occurs through taxes and Christian altruism. The leaders of commerce must understand that in today’s economy, $15 per hour wages would provide the unemployed and underemployed workers the means to become consumers who pay for goods and services, rather than rely on welfare.

A $15/hour ($31,200 per year; $10,000 above the current federal poverty level) would be spent on choices freely made within the family. This outcome happens when employees are paid a ‘living wage’ rather than a minimum wage.

Both government and corporate leaders must focus not only on revenues, but also on middle class employment levels where a ‘living wage’ is paid. It is not possible to have a vibrant economy without a thriving middle class consumer. When families thrive, so does the nation’s domestic economy, its commerce and its consumerism especially on Black Friday.

Una nueva encuesta, por ejemplo, ha revelado que muchos padres desconocen los síntomas tempranos de los desórdenes de comunicación que pueden presentarse en los primeros cuatro años de vida. Y es que, la detención temprana, cuando se trata de problemas del habla el lenguaje y la audición es fundamental.

Y no estamos hablando de un problema menor o de una situación aislada si pensamos que hoy por hoy la incapacidad de comunicarse afecta a alrededor de 40 millones de personas en Estados Unidos y de acuerdo con datos de la Asociación Americana del Lenguaje y el Habla - Ameri-

can Speech-Language-Hearing Association -ASHAresponsable de la encuesta, para el primer año escolar, cuando lo niños empiezan la primaria, cerca del 5 por ciento padece de desórdenes del habla notorios.

Estos problemas del habla, afectan seriamente su desempeño académico y disminuyen su capacidad de interrelacionarse con sus compañeros. Sin embargo, muchos llegan a las aulas sin que sus padres, ni ninguna persona de su entorno, se haya percatado de que existe un problema. Y el asunto es que la detección temprana hace más fácil y económico el tratamiento de estos desórdenes y amplía las posibilidades de recuperación al corto plazo.

La mencionada encuesta de la ASHA señala, sin embargo, que la falta de conocimiento entre los padres, es el principal obstáculo en la detección temprana de desórdenes de la comunicación.

Por eso es importante llamar su atención y la de los educadores, para que estén atentos a percibir las primeras seña-

les de que existe un problema del habla, el lenguaje o la audición.

De acuerdo con la vocera de ASHA Yadira Medina Torres, entre los síntomas iniciales que deberían llamar la atención de los padres están la aparente falta de atención que puede deberse a la dificultad para escuchar y la dificultad para hilar palabras después del año.

Y es que un niño que presente problemas de comunicación, no interactúa socialmente y no entiende lo que se le dice; a pesar de haber llegado al año.

Otra señal de que un niño está teniendo problemas del lenguaje es que usa solo unos pocos sonidos, palabras o gestos o no dice las palabras con claridad, cuando está entre los 18 meses y los 2 años.

El primer paso, entonces, de acuerdo con la experta, es acudir al pediatra que determinará si el pequeño paciente debe ser o no evaluado por un audiólogo o un patólogo del habla.

Superior Court and County of Santa Clara Celebrate National Adoption Day, Bringing Together 48 Children with 36 New Families.

The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara County Social Services Agency joined together to celebrate National Adoption Day, and help place 48 children into 36 permanent homes. Their goal is to increase public awareness of the need for adoptive parents, to educate would-be parents about the adoptive process, and to celebrate the local families who have opened their lives to children in need of permanent homes.

“This is truly one of the Court’s most special and joyous days of the year,” said Presiding Judge, Hon. Brian C. Walsh. “The overwhelming excitement that comes from the starting of so many families is palpable."

With help from Superior Court and Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children’s Services staff, this year 12 Santa Clara County Superior Court judges will forgo their regular duties and turn the Downtown Courthouse into “Adoption Central,” expediting the processing and finalizing of 48 local adoptions.

“The well-being of our children is one of the County’s primary goals,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, Chair of the Board’s Children, Seniors and Families Committee. “It is very fulfilling to help facilitate the adoption process and showcase the dedication and devotion of families that provide a safe and nurturing environment for children.”

According to preliminary 2012 information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 399, 546 children are in the foster care system in the United States and more than 107,719 of them are waiting for adoption. Santa Clara County has processed more than 7,000 adoptions in the past 51 years. Last year, the Department of Family and Children’s Services finalized 87 adoptions.

Residents interested in becoming foster parents or adoptive parents should call (408) 299-KIDS. The process includes participation in a 10-week training program called PRIDE and completing a home study program with assistance from the Department of Families and Children’s Services staff.

Two United Auto Worker locals announced that 39 members of the House of Representatives have joined their effort to stop the Sequester, the disastrous budgeting policy that indiscriminately cuts billions from federal research budgets, slowing the pace of innovation and forcing scientists around the country to walk away from promising projects. A letter signed by the 39 members was delivered November 21 to Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Working with Congressmen George Miller of California and Jim McDermott of Washington, UAW 5810 and 4121 urged members of Congress to voice their support for breakthrough scientific research by stopping these devastating budget cuts.

UAW 5810 represents 6,000 postdoctoral researchers at the University of California, and UAW 4121 represents 4,000 academic student employees at the University of Washington.

“We are thrilled that so many members of Congress

understand the importance of scientific research and the harm being done by the Sequester,” said Neal Sweeney, President of UAW Local 5810. “As Congress moves towards its December budget deadline, we need to have a more rational discussion about making smart investments in our future – and that includes the frontline research that fosters innovation and keeps us the cutting edge. We are hopeful that this strong alliance can persuade others in the House to take up a common-sense budget that moves society forward.”

Health experts identify obesity as the number one health issue facing American children. Current statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that more than one-third of children are overweight or obese. It’s a condition that not only brings increased health risks, but also can subject a child to taunting and discrimination.

Dealing with a child’s weight problems is never easy, but there are a number of things that parents can do that can make reaching and maintaining a healthy weight a more attainable goal.

A starting point is not to be the food police. Restricting or constantly lecturing about food choices can leave a child feeling deprived, different, controlled and rebellious.

The result can be lowered

Instead, give your child an active role in food choices.

Help your child learn about healthy food choices and include him or her on shopping trips to the market. Don’t automatically say “no” to poor food choices, but instead gently teach your child how to balance less desirable food choices with healthier ones.

An overweight child doesn’t need lectures about his or her weight. Instead, teach your child to have a realistic view of the world and himself or herself. We aren’t all supposed to look like models or movie stars. Healthy people come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Finding a healthy weight is the goal you want.

It’s also important to be a positive role model for your child. Make dinner a family affair with everyone taking reasonable portions and hav-

ing a choice of healthy foods.

Don’t lecture about healthy snack choices, but instead set the example by reaching for that piece of fruit yourself.

Staying active should be a family goal. A family walk, bike ride or ball game works off excess calories, provides communication opportunities, and has overall health benefits for your child and the entire family.

Encourage communications. Often, we use food to make us feel calmer, to hide anger or to avoid problems.

Teaching your child that there are other ways to deal with issues besides the refrigerator can help overcome the emotional eating problems so many children face.

If you feel excessive weight is a significant problem for your child, talk to his or her physician about possible options or see a professional counselor specializing in children.

Seguro de automóviles alquilados. Las agencias de alquiler de automóviles ofrecen sus propios seguros contra choques, responsabilidad civil, robo y otras coberturas.

La sabiduría popular dice que debería evitar adquirir estos seguros si su propio seguro –o los beneficios que le ofrece su tarjeta de crédito –le ofrece una cobertura similar para autos alquilados, pero conviene contactarse primero con su compañía de seguro o con el emisor de su tarjeta de crédito para asegurarse de estar plenamente cubierto.

Mucha gente solo tiene una vaga idea de: lo que su seguro automotor cubre y no cubre, cómo se puede anular accidentalmente la cobertura, o que, aun cuando el accidente no hubiera sido su culpa, el seguro puede no pagar los daños si no tiene el tipo de cobertura correcto.

SACRAMENTO The California Employment Development Department (EDD) is notifying more than 222,000 long-term unemployed Californians that they will lose their federallyfunded extended unemployment benefits at the end of this year. Unless Congress and the President agree to renew the extensions, California and all other states can no longer pay any federal extension benefits for weeks ending after December 28, 2013. The Unemployment Insurance (UI) program will then return to providing only initial state-provided benefits that will still be available for up to 26 weeks.

“We’re notifying unemployment claimants of this approaching federal benefits

cutoff to ensure that everyone is aware of the situation,” said Sharon Hilliard, EDD’s Chief Deputy Director. “We want to make certain that people know what to expect so they can plan their personal finances accordingly. In addition, we’re also providing information on a wide range of federal, state and local resources that may be helpful for them and their families.”

The EDD is sending out notices advising affected claimants that the week ending December 28, 2013, will be the last week any federal extension benefits can be paid, even if someone is still unemployed and/or has a remaining balance on their extension. That means unless Congress takes any further action, there will be no phase-out of these benefits

– all extension payments will come to an end at the same time.

More than 617,000 Californians are currently certified for unemployment benefits, down from the early September estimate of 770,000 mostly due to the recent end to Tier 4 extension benefits here in California. Approximately one-third of the current customers are longerterm unemployed who are receiving federal extensions and who will be immediately impacted by the upcoming cutoff. They are strongly encouraged to closely monitor the EDD website page on federal extensions at www. edd.ca.gov for details on any developments over the next several weeks.

The purpose of this video is to increase awareness among young drivers, Deaf and hearing, that texting, internet surfing or emailing on mobile devices while driving is extremely dangerous. According to AAA’s survey of teen drivers, 46 percent of teens text and 51 percent talk on cell phones while driving.

Sacramento CALIFORNIA The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is joining several other state highway patrol agencies across the nation to participate in two separate traffic safety challenges during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Keeping in line with the CHP’s mission of saving lives, both campaigns have set a goal of zero fatalities during the five-day period.

In California 155 miles of I-40 stretches from Needles to Barstow. This stretch of highway through California averages more than 200 collisions annually. Preliminary SWITRS data from 2012 indicates at least 10 people were killed in collisions on I-40 in California.

Interstate 5 (I-5) is the main Interstate Highway on the West Coast. Beginning in San Diego County, I-5 links several major California cities and stretches through 17 of the state’s counties. More

Tapia siempre sentía que tenía que demostrar que era tan buena como un bombero masculino. Cuando tuvo la oportunidad de solicitar una asignación permanente, ella lo solicitó a la estación más concurrida de la ciudad.

Aprendió su trabajo, mejoró muchísimo y desarrolló sus sentidos al máximo.

Ocho años más tarde se enfrentó a un Capitán que le dijo que no quería una mujer que trabajara en su puesto hasta que ella lo convenció de darle una oportunidad por lo menos durante seis meses. Ella terminó quedándose allí por un poco más de 3 años. Le ofrecieron una promoción que ella quería irónicamente, quería seguir trabajando en esa estación. Su Capitán no solo permitió que ella se quedara y finalmente se convirtió en una conductora, fue su primera promoción.

"Mi personalidad es tal que si usted me dice que no puedo hacer algo, voy a morir en el intento ", dijo Tapia. "La gente me puede decir que eres demasiado frágil, eres demasiado pequeña, usted es demasiado marrón, mexicana, lo que sea, estas son todas excusas".

Algunas de las palabras más comunes que escuchaba eran: " Bueno, ella es una mujer. " Eso sólo hizo querer aún más a su profesión. Ella quería demostrar que podía hacer el trabajo. Una vez que se domina una posición , ella sabía que era hora de seguir adelante . Era casi como si ella tuviera que demostrar su valor a todo el mundo, demostrar una vez más que era lo suficientemente buena.

"Había días en que lloraba en el camino a casa y yo creo que lo que estoy haciendo aquí, ¿por qué sigo tratando de hacer esto, pero al día siguiente iba a volver ", dijo Tapia.

Con la ayuda de su familia ha sido capaz de alcanzar sus metas. Había siempre gente Negativa, mas aún; y la gente que pensaba que no podía hacerlo en ese entonces, pero también estaban las personas que se toman un tiempo de su día, proporcionando el estímulo, y las técnicas de la oferta.

"Mi parte favorita del trabajo está fijando el estándar para el servicio que ofrecemos a la gente de nuestra zona. Los chicos que trabajan para mí, ellos saben lo que yo espero y creo que sólo elevan el estándar ", dijo Tapia.

Familia monoparental con su hijo e hija. La Jefa del Batallón Tapia está agradecida por su familia. Es una entrenadora para el equipo de las porristas de su hija, madre voluntaria para el softbol, está en la junta de la liga, y disfruta de los deportes de invierno.

Recientemente aplico por un lugar temporal como jefa de la división, pero no puede ser el momento de seguir adelante.

Cinthia Rodriguez El Observador A quarter century ago women were proving to men that they too can be firefighters. One of those women was Patricia Tapia. Not only did she prove she had the 'stuff ', she became the first Latina Battalion Chief in San Jose’s Fire Department.

In 1985, the fire department was hiring women for the first time. Tapia’s father, a firefighter, mentioned it to her. She thought it wasn’t for her and was already working in high tech business. As soon as she found out a close family friend was preparing to become a firefighter she gave it a chance.

By January of 1986 she was hired.

“When we first got hired, there were people that were trying to keep us out,” said Tapia. “One of the very first orientations we had, I remember they invited all of these people and some of the spouses were really angry with us. Asking us questions like "How do you think you can save my husband’s life if he gets in trouble?”

Not only did she have to face verbal discouragement, but in the early years, the equipment didn’t fit women. She remembers dealing with isolation and no one would help her. She was given extra work and was drilled on a daily basis. It was as if the department didn’t want women in firehouses.

“You change people’s mind, one person at a time. You work harder, and you prove that you really do want to be here to be a firefighter. And you’re not here for any other reason,” said Tapia. “And once people see that, one per-

son at a time, you do change minds. It took a lot of years, a lot of hard work.”

Tapia always felt like she had to prove she was as good as a male firefighter. When she had the opportunity to request a permanent assignment, she requested the busiest station in the city. She learned her job and got really good at it and developed respect.

Eight years later she faced a captain that told her he didn’t want a woman working at his station, until she convinced him to give her a chance for at least six months.

She ended up staying there for a little over 3 years. She was offered a promotion that she ironically wanted to turn down in order to continue working at that station. Her captain didn’t allow her and she became a driver, her first promotion.

“My personality is one that if you tell me I can’t do something, I will die trying,” said Tapia. “People can tell me you’re too short, you’re too small, you’re too brown, Mexican, whatever, these are all the excuses.”

Some of the more common words she would hear were “well she’s a woman.”

That only made her want it even more. She wanted to prove that she could get the job done. Once she mas-

tered a position, she knew it was time to move on. It was almost like she had to prove herself to everybody all over again that she was good enough.

“There were days I would cry on the way home and I would think what am I doing here. Why do I keep trying to do this, but the next day I would come back,” said Tapia.

With the help from her family she has been able to reach her goals. There were always the nay sayers and the people that thought she couldn’t do it back then but there were also the people that would take the time out of their day, providing encouragement, and offering techniques.

“My favorite part of the job is setting the standard for the service that we provide to the people in our area. The guys that work for me, they know what I expect and I think it just raises the standard,” said Tapia.

Single parent to her son and daughter, Battalion Chief Tapia is thankful for her family. She’s a coach for her daughter’s cheer squad, parent volunteer for softball, and is on the board of a little league and enjoys winter sports. She recently applied for a temporary spot as division chief but it may not be time to move on.

Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk Hydraulic fracturing (known as “fracking”) is a method of causing fissures in underground shale rock formations to facilitate the extraction of otherwise inaccessible natural gas and oil.

In a typical fracking operation, drillers inject a mixture of pressurized water and chemicals underground to fracture the rock and free up the gas and oil. Not widely employed in the U.S. until less than a decade ago, fracking has quickly become a major player in the U.S. energy scene. The resulting influx of cheap domestic natural gas— cleaner burning than the oil and coal it has replaced—is at least partly responsible for the fact that the U.S. has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions to the lowest levels since 1992.

Fracking has been good for oil companies, the economy and even our carbon footprint, but it doesn’t come without environmental cost.

A typical fracking operation pumps some five million gallons of water and chemicals underground to break up the shale. About half the water is removed during the oil and gas recovery process, leaving the other half underground where it can contaminate aquifers and degrade soils.

Enterprising petroleum engineers have been hard at work trying to find ways to frack without water. One promising alternative involves using carbon dioxide (CO2) to break up the underground shale instead of water. “Fracking with carbon dioxide has a number of potential advantages,” reports Kevin Bullis in the MIT Technology Review. “Not only would it eliminate the need for millions of gallons of water per well, it would also eliminate the large amounts

of wastewater produced in the process.” He adds that CO2 may also yield more natural gas and oil than water, given the dynamics of how it works underground.

Also, CO2 used in fracking can be recovered and used repeatedly. And once a well is done producing, it can be sealed up, sequestering the CO2 underground where it can’t add to global warming.

Researchers at the University of Virginia estimate that fracked sections of the Marcellus shale in the eastern U.S. could store over half of all U.S. CO2 emissions from power plants and other stationary sources over the next 20 years, with other shale formations providing significant additional storage.

Right now CO2-based fracking is uncommon, given the abundance of water in our biggest fracking regions and the logistical challenges in transporting a compressible gas to well sites safely and

cheaply. But as fracking expands into politically charged areas, or arid regions where water is scarce, waterless fracking could become more common. Already, nearly half of the fracked wells drilled across the U.S. in 2011-2012 are in water-stressed areas, according to the sustainability-oriented non-profit, CERES. And a recent study from the consulting firm Wood Mackenzie concluded that many of the countries with the greatest promise for developing shale oil and gas through fracking suffer from water shortages.

Bullis says that one of the largest shale gas resources in the world is in China underneath 115,000 square miles of desert. “Piping in water would strain already tight supplies,” he says, but adds that China’s major use of coal-fired power plants means the country has plenty of CO2 it could be capturing and using.

How to Dress Because deer can spot colors in the ultraviolet spectrum, if your hunting garments contain UV brighteners or are blue, you’ll actually appear to glow in low light to deer.

Opt for camouflage, which makes it harder for deer to spot you from a distance.

But don’t neglect to wear at least the required amount of hunter-orange clothing, to be visible to other hunters.

Body Odor When it comes to managing body odor during a hunt, it’s

not just a matter of politeness toward fellow hunters. The human nose has about five million olfactory receptors, the neurons responsible for the detection of odor. Deer have an estimated 297 million. The way you smell can scare off a deer.

“The goal is to delay the inevitable -- to fool a buck’s nose long enough to make a shot.”

Use pine, acorn, earth, and -- if you’re up for it -- skunk scents to cover your smell.

And you could even draw a buck to you by using deer urine scent.

Follow the Rules Whether they’re for safety or deer population management, be sure to follow the rules of the park or grounds on which you are hunting.

Clean up after yourself and never trespass.

Event includes Annual Holiday Art Sale San Francisco CALIFORNIA The Mexican Museum will celebrate what would have been famed Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s 127th birthday as part of its Family Sunday on Dec. 8 from noon to 3:30 p.m. The event is free and adults and children are welcome.

Those attending will not only learn about Rivera and his art, but will also have the opportunity to create a birthday card for Rivera. But the fun won’t stop there. Adults and children will also be able to create their own holiday ornament. These activities will be led by museum staff, and everyone, regardless of

age, is encouraged and invited to participate. Participants are encouraged to arrive early as space is limited for the hands-on art project.

Diego Rivera, is one of the best-known Mexican artists.

He was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. A naturally gifted artists, he began his formal training at a young age. But it wasn’t until he traveled to Europe in 1907 that his talent began to blossom. He met Pablo Picasso and had a front-row seat to the cubist movement. When he returned to Mexico, Rivera went to work for the new revolutionary government.

He was commissioned to paint several murals on government buildings. His tal-

ent and acclaim led Rivera to receive commissions in other countries – including the United States. Rivera is considered the greatest Mexican muralist.

In addition to Family Sunday, The Mexican Museum will be hosting La Tienda Holiday Sale starting on Dec. 7 through the 31st, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A large selection of beautiful, traditional handmade crafts made from ceramic, copper and wood will be available for purchase.

There will also be a selection of Huichol jewelry. The Mexican Museum is located at Fort Mason Center, Building D and is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Veronica Taylor Ramirez EL OBSERVADOR The Miss California Latina Pageant popped into Kassandra ‘Kassie’ Peña’s life three times before she finally spontaneously decided to sign up and compete. The 24-yearold San Jose State University broadcast journalism graduate holds the title of Miss San Jose Latina.

While surfing YouTube, as a sophomore in college, Peña stumbled upon a YouTube user who competed in the pageant. Peña glanced over the pageant website, but ultimately ignored it. Some time after, while surfing YouTube, she found herself on the pageant website, but once again she ignored it. About a year ago, Peña ran into the pageant website for a third time.

“This keeps coming to me, obviously it’s meant to be in my life for a reason. So then I said, you know what, I have nothing to lose. I’m totally just going to apply to it,” said Peña.

A month after applying, Peña was selected to be a contestant. Shortly after, she was notified that she would represent San Jose in the pageant.

“When I got notified that I was representing San Jose, I was just so excited because I knew I would have a lot more opportunities in this large city,” said Peña.

Although she is considered a rookie by pageant standards since this is her first competition, Peña and her family have embraced pageant life to fullest. “It’s definitely an experience in my family because no one has ever done a pageant. I’ll be the first and we’ll see what happens,” said Peña.

Aside from the glitz and the glamour of the pageant gowns, each contestant must also have a platform. For Peña, that platform was an easy choice: gang prevention. Her interest in the topic began in high school when she did a presentation about gangs in the area.

Within her family and circle of friends, Peña witnessed the psychological effects of gang life. “Research is showing that gang members are now initiating and trying to recruit as young as 11 and 12 year olds,” said Peña. This past year, Peña attended the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force town hall meetings to learn in-depth about gang prevention, and meet with the community to create a plan to combat gang life.

With her current title, Peña hopes to remind children “there are other outlets in life besides joining a gang.”

“With any title, someone has so much power and it’s really what you do with that power

that determines how great of a leader you can be.”

If Peña were to win the title of Miss California Latina, she hopes to start her own organization focused on keeping children safe, or contribute and network with an established organization.

Even though Peña has not competed yet, she is already a voice for young Latinas.

Peña is a contributing writer to Latinas magazine, an online magazine focused on empowering Latina youth.

She has also documented her entire pageant experience on her Wordpress blog.

Her blogging skills have even earned her a guest spot on NPR’s Latino USA with Maria Hinojosa. Peña was asked to speak about Latina body image.

Peña will compete for the title of Miss California Latina on November 29-December 1st in Pasadena, California.

With or without the state title of Miss California Latina, Peña is simply humbled to have taken part in the experience.

Juan Carlos Miranda Special to El Observador Holiday season is here and retailers are all fighting for your attention--and money-to get you into their stores and sites. They will lure you with special deals and one-ofa-kind items that everybody sort of seems to have one (go figure). With Christmas just around the corner, resisting those black Friday deals will be next to impossible.

If you’re one of those people that will be camping out at the store, for days-on-end just to get your hands on a brand new game console a store will only have a certain amount of them available.

Later you come to find out the manufacturer released a lot more the very next day for the same price, if not lower

than the price you got it for.

By then you are feeling like a chump for believing you were getting your money and time’s worth--then all my respect for you dissapears but I’m sad to say, you are a chump. No big screen TV, game console or designer bag is worth ditching spending time with your family to feed your shopping addiction, just because you think you are getting a good deal.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for good deals, but seriously, don’t fall for the insanity of the so called Black Friday deals.

Instead shop smart. Chances are that you will find a justas-good substitute for that special deal you were trying to get. As far as getting the same item, be patient and wait because you still have a month before Christmas. And as that day gets closer, most retailers will bring back the deals they

offered during Black Friday, if not at a lower price.

I know it’s inevitable for many of us to spend money on presents, but let’s remember not to let the big box retailers manipulate us like puppets.

Instead develop a plan as to when, where and how will you get your Christmas list done. For that, here are a few tips that will get you through.

- Know what the exact item is that you want to get and if there is something you can substitute it with in case you can’t get it (which is rare).

- Shop around for the best deal and look into retailers’ websites for price comparison and price matching.

- Buy it online. Online shopping is the greatest because, if you know exactly what you are looking for, you

can get that item for the best price and even gift wrapped.

Give yourself a few days to receive it, so shop early.

- Shop at your mom-andpop store for one of a kind items. All big retailers carry the same items. But if you’re looking for good quality, one-of-a-kind items then shop at your nearest momand-pop store. Not only will you be contributing to your community but our economy.

- Finally, be patient. Don’t ever think you have to go stand outside a store for 12 hours to get a good deal.

Instead wait, because those deals will come back, and when they do, the demand for that item won’t be as high as before. Just remember - be a predator and wait for the right time before you go in for the kill.

The new song counterattacks manipulation and turns it into a collective expression

San Juan PUERTO RICO Normally, viruses approach people. Instead, Calle 13 proposes for its audience to approach the virus. That is why on November 5th the band announced that in a few days their fans would be able to hear their new single, after almost four years of not releasing new music. “Multi_Viral” is the first single off their fifth studio album to be released in 2014.

The song features the participation of Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, who is a renowned activist and accused of being a hacker and leaking classified information. In addition, it includes collaborations with Tom Morello, deemed by RollingStone magazine as one of the best guitarists of all time, as well as Palestinian singer-songwriter and musician Kamilya Jubran. This diversity is what makes it impossible to pigeonhole Calle 13 into a particular genre of music. The same can be said for “Multi_Viral”, it’s a song that belongs to many genres. Through the music and

lyrics, fans can identify with particular elements of the song and develop a personal relationship to it.

The concept of the song emerged last June when Residente met with Julian Assange at the Embassy of Ecuador in London.

Through a Twitcam they proposed to their fans on Twitter to write the song together.

That very day, they received thousands of emails from which they selected words and phrases, which began to fuel the creative process.

As Residente describes it, “It was like a puzzle… similar to what happens when one writes, you have all the words in your head and you build what you want, but this time I was actually seeing the words”.

In reference to the lyrics of “Multi_Viral” Residente states, “It represents a universal discomfort, it speaks about courage, about what lights the wick, and it manages to cause a chemical distress in your body. It’s about the actual connection amongst people that exists on a global scale, and that’s the reason

for “Yo soy 132” (in English, “We are 132”,) a movement comprised of young people who oppose media manipulation and disinformation) and 15-M (a citizen mobilization in Spain that demands a fairer system and promotes a more human type of journalism) because we have a connection.

When we hear the single, we realize that through the song we actually feel the sound of the interferences, representing what the lyrics communicate.

This very interference is an analogy to the manner in which media conveys information. Although the verses allude to thoughts that have been thought of or expressed about in the past, they become part of a whole. The concept of the message is transmitted in perfect unison through the lyrics and music. It represents the media’s ability to hide or alter the truth and not say things how they really are. In the case of “Multi_Viral”, they managed for this particular virus to communicate everything that is not communicated.

feco es que los aficionados no sean sorprendidos “que lleguen al mundial y tienen problemas con el boleto y esto nos preocupa porque no queremos que existan daños y riesgos a los consumidores que hayan caído por practicas de publicidad engañosa”.

Font explicó que “esas agencias que dicen tener boletos corren el riesgo que no se los vayan a proporcionar, no tenga los boletos, que sean boletos falsos, que sean incluso boletos a un precio mayor, lo cual no existe porque los precios publicados en fifa.com están homologados a nivel mundial y no existe cambio del costo conforme se acerca la fecha del torneo”.

Detalló que “hemos estado en colaboración cercana con la Profeco, hemos detectado ciertas empresas que están ofertando o teniendo publicidad engañosa a cerca de los boletos, cualquier agencia que diga que los tiene, no los tiene, porque no está autori-

That said, a Forbes reviewer was dead-on when he wrote: “Both consoles are going to appeal to different gamers.” Here’s what you need to know: * Cost. The starting price for Sony’s PlayStation 4 ($399.99) is $100 less than Microsoft’s Xbox One ($499.99). But while the latter ships with Microsoft’s
