The San Jose Metropolitan Area is proud of its diversity; its community safety and security. San Jose State University is an integral part of this liberal, accepting and inclusive community which supports the creative innovations of Silicon valley’s industrial complex. SJSU has trained more than 50,000 engineers employed therein. Since a college education is essential, it is fitting during 2014 to give more attention to the ‘Town & Gown’ issues impacting this community, its families and their kids. Why are there not enough class offerings scheduled to permit all students to fulfill their degree curriculum requirements during a four year period? Many students

cannot afford to stay enrolled for five or six years. They need assurance that all degree requirements are available during their four academic years. The current situation adds to the college student drop out rate, especially of students from families having modest means. Why are ‘required classes’ not available? Is the faculty really committed to teaching or is an effort being made to have SJSU become another academic research factory? Since SJSU was orginally founded as an educational institution which trained teachers and professionals needed by the community, maybe its faculty needs to review its priorities and mission statement.

and cost of operations to dtermine what contributes to the escalation of costs, especially tuition and fees? Just what is being supported by public revenues (taxes) provided to SJSU as part of the UC/CSU/Community college state supported higher education system?
What is the cause of all those tuition increases? Would the UC/CSU/CC system permit an investigatory commission of ‘nonacademic’ organizational experts look at their current organizational structure
Too many gifted students from families of modest means cannot attain their career goals unless the cost of a public university education is kept at levels which are reasonable, accessible and attainable. Should our Latino community establish a rotating college scholarship fund which is administered transparently, and which provides for full fundng of tuitioin, books, fees, and board & room to deserving qualified student candidates? In its own self interests, the Latino community could do just that. El Observador recommends that the local Latino community review the en-

ies, gas or anything for that matter. During 2014 let’s learn enough to understand how to influence school officials so that our community benefits as much as does the other sectors of Silicon valley. Last September 2013 the State Department of Education implemented LCFF (local control financing formula). This department kept 10 categorical programs while handing off 48 categorical programs to the local school boads. Board chairs such as ARUSD’s Delores Marquez, and four board colleagues are now making funding decisions formerly made in Sacramento. Those parents whose child benefitted from those 48 categorical programs now need to become watchful informed stakeholders. Let’s complete the cycle by asking how our local member of the California State University system is funded. Let’s understand why it was

necessary to change the former practices of permitting local San Jose East Side Latino students to be accepted at SJSU. If we pay taxes which support SJSU, then let us understand what, if anything, we are getting as a ‘quid pro quo’. Let us require that SJSU provide all ‘core curriculum requirements’ for a four year degree within four academic years. Is that too much to ask? If so, then let’s find affordable alternatives. The local Latino community has enough interested, informed and educated professionals to be directly engaged in the proposed ‘investigatory commission’. That is what we, as a community, need to address during 2014. The outcome will provide a sense of inclusion and becoming a significant stakeholder. Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2014.

One problem with most New Year’s resolutions is that we set unrealistic goals for change. It might be important to lose weight, stop smoking or improve a relationship, but simply deciding something must change doesn’t mean it will. For a resolution to work, it requires actual planning, not just wishing. Start by making realistic resolutions. Don’t expect to shed all your excess weight by the end of January. Accept that breaking a long-term smoking habit may not succeed on the first try. Set goals that are realistic and attainable. Next, develop a plan which takes into account that your resolution requires a meaningful change in behavior. Figure out what you need to do to help make your goal attainable, and accept that

you may not be one hundred percent successful. Habits acquired over years don’t change instantly. Instead of focusing on the final, desired outcome, break big tasks into smaller, more manageable pieces. A resolution to exercise more might start slowly with a daily 15-minute walk, adding time each week as you get into better shape. For weight loss, your achievable mini-goals might be changes in eating habits, rather than actual pounds lost. A first goal might be to cut out one high-calorie food each day. A second goal might be to replace one high-fat favorite with a new fruit or vegetable. Use minigoals that focus on positive behavioral changes and use the successes of hitting those mini-goals as positive reinforcement to help keep you going. The secret to success with resolutions lies up front, both in the resolutions you develop and in what you expect from yourself in terms of compliance. Once you have carefully and thoughtfully planned the resolution, and accepted that you may stumble a time or two on the way to your final target, you can rest assured that you have begun the process in good fashion and have a better than average chance of success. Resolutions can offer a very positive opportunity to change areas in our lives that we would like to improve upon. Making a resolution can be one step toward this self-improvement and succeeding at a resolution can both improve our lives and bring a rewarding sense of accomplishment.

Affordable Banking for Low- to Moderate-Income (LMI) Communities By Roberto Pineda, Union Bank, N.A.
Union Bank is creating positive change in our communities with its new Union Bank Access Account. One of the first of its kind, the new account helps illustrate the bank’s commitment to providing products that serve the needs of the low- to moderateincome (LMI) segment and other consumers, including those on ChexSystems, who may not qualify for a traditional bank account.
Ssn Jose CALIFORNIA The Reaching Out Food Center at the Cathedral of Faith held their annual ‘Celebration of Love’ Monday, December 23 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. During the event, 3,362 grocery carts full of food were distributed, including turkeys, fresh produce, vegetables, bread, and pastries, to needy families. The retail value of the distributed food is well over $900,000. “This year, we saw a much greater demand in our services,” said Jim Gallagher, Reaching Out’s director. The mostly-volunteer ministry, which operates out of a debt-free, 16,000 square foot distribution center on the Cathedral of Faith campus, provides emergency food and basic life necessities for over 120,000 economically disadvantaged. Over 1,000 volunteers were on hand at the event to provide assistance to food recipients. U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren attended the event, as she has been an outspoken proponent of Reaching Out over their 34year history. The Celebration of Love Food Distribution event took about three hours to pull off—and more than 3,500 vouchers were distributed to recipients over the past month. Each family presented their voucher to receive their food. “No one will be turned away,” Gallagher said. The Union Bank Access Account is a direct response to requests from consumers and community groups regarding the needs of the LMI customer segment that includes the unbanked and underbanked population. According to the 2011 Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, 8.9 percent of U.S. households are unbanked, which represents 1 in 12 households in the nation or nearly 10 million in total, while 20.1 percent of U.S.households are underbanked, which represents one in five households or 24 million in total (http://www.fdic.gov/householdsurvey/). Union Bank continues to honor its legacy of public service through a commitment to responsible products and practices, one of its five tenets of responsible banking. The Union Bank Access Account is a low-cost product that offers features and functionalities to allow customers easier access to their account and the opportunity to establish a banking relationship with Union Bank. “The ongoing feedback we receive from our community partners and customers is critical to our product development,” said Union Bank Vice President and Senior Product Manager Rogger LaCruz. “We are proud to respond with an affordable product that offers the features typically offered on consumer checking accounts, while avoiding the risk of incurring overdraft and non-sufficient funds fees.” The Union Bank Access Account is a checkless account and is available in California, Washington and Oregon. Customers may visit a Union Bank branch to
learn more or to open an account. There is no set up fee and direct deposit of a payroll or benefit payment is not required. Once the account is open, customers can make deposits and withdrawals in a branch or at an ATM.They may also use the account’s ATM card to perform point-of-sale transactions (with a personal identification number) at participating merchants. Providing customized financial services and solutions has been the heart and soul of Union Bank throughout its nearly 150-year history. Whether we’re helping a family buy its first home, supporting small businesses or the vital work of affordable housing developers, or providing affordable financial services to LMI consumers, fair and transparent banking is a fundamental Union Bank commitment. “We know that empowering consumers and businesses, and providing them access to affordable financial services is what helps communities thrive,” said Union Bank Senior Executive Vice President Julius Robinson, head of Corporate Social Responsibility. “That includes identifying opportunities where we can serve the LMI market segment.” For more information on the Union Bank Access Account please visit your local Union Bank branch for further details. (BPT) While election politicking dominated the top 10 searches of 2012, this year people were a little starry-eyed when it comes to online searching. Miley Cyrus (No. 1) came into our lives like a wrecking ball and dethroned Kim Kardashian (No. 2) to become Yahoo’s most searched person in 2013.
Top searches on Yahoo in 2013: 1. Miley Cyrus 2. Kim Kardashian 3. Kate Upton 4. Minecraft 5. Selena Gomez 6. Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) 7. Amanda Bynes 8. Jodi Arias 9. iphone 5 10. Justin Bieber “In past years, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton dominated our lists,” says vera Chan, Yahoo Web trends analyst and senior editor, who oversees the Yahoo Year in Review. “They started off as the girl next door and the It Girl, before the trains wrecked. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian have taken up their slots, but they’re savvier in controlling their image and making sure we sit up and take notice.” The twerk — which helped land the term into Yahoo’s obsessions list — wasn’t Cyrus’ only move. Right after the vMAs, she poked fun at her own image on “Saturday Night Live” to show she was in on her own joke. Kardashian’s pregnancy, divorce, and engagement guaranteed the reality star a continued place in the Top 10 (she’s been a regular since 2009), although even giving birth to Kanye West’s daughter North wasn’t enough to keep her top pole position.
Information, released by Yahoo, noted an exception to the star-domminated list was Obamacare. “Ironically, the government shutdown, which had been designed to defund Obamacare, may have been its biggest publicity stunt,” says Chan. Searches averaged their highest during the 16-day shutdown, which also coincided with the website’s launch. The notoriety surrounding the murder trial of Jodi Arias thrust the defendant into the Top 10. The iPhone 5, which ranked second in 2012 despite not even being out yet, ironically fell to the ninth slot when the real thing finally emerged. Online gaming phenomenon, Minecraft, comes in at fourth.
Top 10 news stories A quick scan of the news stories reveals a wide breadth of domestic and international issues: Obamacare (second), the Boston Marathon bombings (third), the birth of Great Britain’s -royal baby (fourth), Syria civil war (sixth), North Korea missile threats (seventh) and the papal transition (ninth) made the list. Surprisingly, despite the dialogue about race relations, crime, and gun control that the George Zimmerman murder trial engendered, it was the Jodi Arias trial that took the No. 1 spot. What didn’t quite make the Top 10s may also be equally intriguing. The government shutdown lasted 16 days in October, but a civic paralysis commanded the national conversation. “It was much ado about doing nothing,” Chan observes. Besides checking the status of the “government shutdown,” people also looked up fur-
loughs, sequestration, fiscal cliffs, the players involved, and of course what was open. Had the shutdown lasted longer than 16 days, the phrase would’ve cracked the Top 10.
Obsessions Twerking makes the list of America’s web obsessions, but unlike Gangnam Style, people just wanted to know what the heck it was. Television shows like “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead” and “Duck Dynasty” (which tops the list) dominated. “The mass audiences of broadcast days are gone, but a lot of people think we’re in a golden age,” Chan says. “And they’ve long been on cable networks and now, of course, on outlets like Netflix and Amazon. We hosted a dating show parody ‘Burning Love,’ which got nominated for an Emmy.” The “Fifty Shades of Gray” obsession extended to casting this year, which saw at least one star drop out because of fan outcry, although he attributed that to scheduling. Other obsessions included apps like Snapchat and Bitstrips, the Rainbow Loom toy that takes the Silly Bandz craze into craft mode, and the selfie. Other takeaways of 2013, identified in the Yahoo Year in Review, which launched Dec. 3, include gay milestones, the year’s biggest trials, viral photos, science discoveries and hoaxes, and what Yahoo’s calling the WTH moments, with no less than Dennis Rodman leading the diplomatic charge. People can find original videos, slick slideshows and bigpicture analyses from Yahoo News writers on yearinreview. yahoo.com.

LEGAL CLASSIFIEDS (NAPSI) Your energy bills will be less likely to get you hot under the collar if you heed a few hints from the experts at the U.S. Department of Energy. 1. Install and set a programmable thermostat to save up to 10 percent on heating and cooling costs. 2. Use sunlight to your advantage. During the cold months, open your curtains during the day to let the sun shine in. During warmer months, use light-colored window shades or blinds to reflect heat back out. Using natural lighting can also reduce your need for artificial light. 3. Set your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees. Install low-flow showerheads or temperature-sensitive shower valves. 4. Choose energy-saving lighting. Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, compact
fluorescent bulbs yield as much as 75 percent energy savings and last six times longer. 5. Get an electronic power strip. Many chargers and other devices consume energy even when not in use. Plug them into the power strip and turn it off. 6. Arrange for annual heating and cooling system maintenance by a qualified technician. 7. Clean the air filters in your heating and cooling system monthly and replace them as needed. Also, clean the vents, vacuum under the refrigerator and keep food from blocking the airflow. 8. Use Energy Star certified appliances and electronics. They use much less energy and water than standard models. For example, a new Amana dishwasher uses 35 percent less energy and 62 percent less water than older, conventional dishwashers. It has a heated dry function that whisks away moisture, drying dishes thoroughly and saving you time.
Its Triple Filter wash system means there’s no need to prerinse your dishes: The three filters remove food particles so you conserve energy and water and still get dishes clean. Then there’s the Amana Side-by-Side Refrigerator. With its large capacity, it uses 30 percent less energy than older models. It also dispenses filtered water and ice so you can save money not buying bottled water. 9. Plant trees that lose their leaves no closer than twice their height south of your house so they’ll provide shade in summer but not block sunlight in winter. Other good places for trees are in Tanzania, Brazil and Indonesia, where they help reduce environmental destruction. That’s why, for every major appliance sold in the U.S., Amana will donate the cost of planting a tree.

(BPT) Ringing in the new year on a budget? The high price of New Year’s Eve hotel accommodations doesn’t have to keep you from celebrating in big-city style. Even the most sought-after New Year’s Eve hotspots have nearby alternatives that give travelers access to big-city countdowns without the big-city price tags. “Surveys have shown that two-thirds of travelers will choose a destination first, then search for ways to make their plans and accommodations fit into their travel budgets,” says Jeanenne Tornatore, senior editor for the travel booking website Orbitz.com. “A great way to do that is by considering hotel accommodations in the suburbs just outside the city you’re looking to visit. For New Year’s Eve, travelers will see incredible savings and
still have easy access to the spectacular big-city celebrations.” For example, for a new year south of the border, travelers can save up to 42 percent by staying in Cozumel instead of the crowded Cancun strip. Families interested in visiting Orlando, Fla., for the holiday might prefer to say in nearby Kissimmee and save more
than 20 percent. Here are a few other top New Year’s destinations and their moneysaving alternatives: Las vegas strip/off-strip: It’s easy to see why Las vegas is the nation’s top destination for New Year’s Eve with its world-class celebrations and ultimate parties. But, not to worry, staying at hotels offthe-strip means a 31 percent
hotel savings, without missing out on all the New Year’s party action. Travelers will still have convenient access to the New Year’s fireworks and live music on the strip and at the Fremont Experience. Whether you’re ready to let loose and party or looking for a classic New Year’s celebration, Las vegas has it. New York City/Newark, N.J.: The Times Square ball drop is the most iconic New Year’s celebration of all and this year it’s easier than ever to afford a trip to the Big Apple by staying in one of the many New York City suburbs. If you book your New Year’s Eve hotel in Newark, N.J., a quick train ride will drop you in the center of all the action, and you will have one more reason to celebrate - 68 percent average savings. New Orleans’ French Quarter/Garden District: When it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve in grand style, it’s hard to top New Orleans. And, best of all, much of it is free. Jackson Square is ground zero for the evening’s fun and excitement, complete with live entertainment. Just before midnight, the crowd turns its attention to the roof of Jax Brewery, waiting for an 8-foot-tall fleur-de-lis to drop and ring in 2014. Want to join in on the fun without the big price tag? Savings of 33 percent can be found by staying in the mansion-lined Garden District, just a short streetcar or cab ride from the action.

n The Wolf of Wall Street, revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese directs the story of New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio). From the American dream to corporate greed, Belfort goes from penny stocks and righteousness to IPOs and a life of corruption in the late 80s and early 90s. Excess success and affluence in his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont warranted Belfort the title - “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

his Walter Mitty (Stiller) is a modern day-dreamer, an ordinary magazine photo editor who takes a regular mental vacation from his ho-hum existence by disappearing into a world of fantasies electrified by dashing heroism, passionate romance and constant triumphs over danger. But when Mitty and the co-worker he secretly adores (Kristen Wiig) stand in actual peril of losing their jobs, Walter must do the unimaginable: take real action – sparking a global journey more extraordinary than anything he could have ever dreamed up.

Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected— as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors.
