There has been a copious amount of speculation revolving around whether pets have a sixth sense that helps them to predict natural disasters prior to humans. Dating back to 373 B.C. there have been reports of animals acting hectic prior to a strong storm, as ancient Greek reports have stated. Determining whether our pets can predict or not has been a constantly studied subject within veterinarian circles for an abundance of years and many pet owners are asking if it's true. Is it True? As previously stated there has been an abundance of witness accounts that have explained the possibility of animals detecting natural disasters prior to their owners. In 373 B.C. it was said that the ancient Greeks noticed the animals fleeing Helice days before an earthquake took over the city. Also, prior to the Indian Ocean Christmas tsunami in the year 2004, it was noted that an elephant was seen breaking from its chains in order to flee to higher ground. Scientific reports have also stated that when a natural disaster occurs, there are less animal casualties than human casualties in many areas. The USGS (United States Geological Survey) does not acknowledge these reports to have any scientific standing but they agree that animals seem to produce extreme and odd behavior prior to a natural disaster. How Dogs Sense? Out of all of the pets in the world, dogs have been known to have the keenest sense of smell and have shown erratic behavior the most before a natural disaster. They are said to have a "sixth sense" that helps them to determine whether an area is to be safe or not. Generally when horrible weather is due to hit a particular area, it has been noted that dogs exhibit extreme fits of barking and have shown erratic behavior. Another way to determine whether or not dogs can sense disasters is to see how many dog casualties occur during a natural disaster and to see how many pets go missing after a tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, etc. happens. This can help to determine whether they predicted the event to occur. Determining whether pets can detect natural disasters before they occur is up to personal opinion although scientists have been working on answering that question for many years.
