In December of 2004, the international community witnessed one of the most horrible natural disasters in human history. The earth quaked deep in the Indian Ocean, summoning on of the largest Tsunami's the modern world has ever seen. Just under a quarter-million people died in over ten countries. Natural disasters like these occur very frequent all over the planet; Katrina in the United States, mudslides in Central and South America, droughts and brush fires all over the western world. For most of us, the severity of these situations never really crosses our minds until it is almost too late. In many instances, when it is time for us to act and perform in the face of danger, we loose sight of some of our most trusted family members: our animals. When natural disaster strikes, it is important for us to be ready not only for the human members of our family, but also our pets. Many people, when asked if they have plan for natural disaster, don't even really know where to start. Luckily, there are resources out there at your disposal. The American Red Cross, a well-respected authority on disaster relief, has set a few guidelines for taking care of pets in imminent danger. Here are some of the things that they suggest: 1.

Find a safe haven for your pet

Know where you are going to take your pet in the event that you cannot take care of it yourself. Call hotels, friends, family, animal shelters and other "animal friendly" place where your pet can find shelter in the face of danger. 2.

Have a disaster kit prepared for your pet

Your disaster kit should include safety materials, a list of medications, food water, ID tags and extra leashes if necessary. These items will help keep your animal safe in the event that you are separated. 3.

Stay informed and know what to do

Usually, when a natural disaster occurs there are warning signs. The local news stations will inform you to the best of their ability as the information becomes available. This, though, should not be the extent of your information gathering. There are hotlines that you can call in your area to get information of safety recommendations and where to go for extra supplies if need be.

Natural disasters will occur in the future. It is just a question of where and when. The more proactive we are in gathering information to protect ourselves and our pets, the better our chances will be of surviving. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Devine
