LETTERS TO OURSELVES PARTY LIKE GATSBY SIBLING LETTERS JAZZED TO BE DIFFERENT FUTURE PLANS

FOREWORD W ow, how four years can go by in an instant! It has been my honor, as your principal, to watch you grow from tentative freshmen into such strong and remarkable seniors. Both inside and outside of the classroom, you proved to be a special group that came into senior year ready to lead, take charge and enjoy your final year as greyhounds. The 2019-2020 school year started out as a wonderfully normal year. Throughout the year it was a complete joy to watch your leadership in action as you accomplished great things academically and extracurricularly. The year was progressing just as we hoped, and then came Covid-19. As with every senior class, you looked forward to your rites of passage: your last performance, senior season on the court, field or track, DECA Nationals, Tech Hounds competition, prom and graduation. Even with some of these things lost because of this pandemic and the uncertainty of the future, you have not lost your spirit. You have risen to the challenge, picked each other up and supported our

underclassmen, who look to you to assure them everything will be okay. Through your perseverance and resiliency, you have shown, by example, that it will. Considering how confidently you have reacted to the changes in your senior year, we know your resolve will create bright futures for all of you. As you leave Carmel High School and encounter times when nothing may seem normal, always remember, you are the Class of 2020. You have each other, your teachersand our entire staff who love and believe in you. You will always be a Greyhound and no one or situation can ever take that from you.

With pride and appreciation,

Principal Tom Harmas

I’m just excited to meet new people, get involved at Purdue and make as many experiences and memories as I can. After Purdue, I intend on pursuing my education in physical therapy, and I’m just excited to travel to new places.

I’m excited to get out and live on my own as well as spend time with friends and pursue my education in a field that I feel passionate about, which is engineering. I am also looking forward to the end of this quarantine.

I want to become a dentist. I would have a lot of school to go through, and I’m obviously excited about school. I’m on the National Cheer team, and I’m excited about that. There are so many things I have planned, but who knows?

cOnnOr farrell Over these past four years, Carmel has given me a lot of great experiences and built me as a person. This next decade, I’m super excited to see where my life takes me, both career-wise and the experiences that I have. For college, I’m going to the University of Alabama, and I’m happy to not only take part in everything they have to offer but grow myself and prepare myself for my future career. Throughout this next decade, I want to keep seeing myself grow, and I want to see myself reach all the goals that (I’ll have) set for myself. Hopefully over the next 10 years, (I’ll have) not only created myself a stable career, but also built myself a small family... I can’t wait for the next 10 years to come.

OURSELVES DEAR FUTURE ME,

DEAR PAST ME,

T

hank you. Thank you for being relentlessly yourself. For understanding the bigger picture of this life you have been blessed with. While there are so many things one may look back on and regret or wish they did differently, you were able to understand what to take from them. I know I have many imperfections. I know that maybe I shouldn’t have let others’ opinions affect me, shouldn’t have been so intimidated by that pretty girl across the room, shouldn’t have said that one thing that could have hurt someone’s feelings. But you have gotten me to the point where I can ask myself, “Why not? Why should I be ashamed that those things ate me up inside if they made me who I am today?” For a large portion of middle school and even high school I wondered, “Why isn’t my house as big as theirs, why should I have to pay car insurance or why do my grades matter so much?” But here today you have found all the answers that you longed for. You wanted that big house and were intimated by the girl across the class because you hadn’t yet realized you were normal. You didn’t know that maybe the girl across the room felt the same way about you or that materialistic ideals aren’t what determines a good friend. While you had these thoughts, you still went out of your way to be involved, cared about your grades because it was YOUR future, and worked 25 hours a week to learn what it means to work for what you have. I am proud of you for having insecurities, but not letting them stop you from striving for the best you. I am proud of you for learning how to love someone with your entire heart and for still caring about those who you have drifted from. While along the way you will question so many moments and decisions, I want you to know that no effort or ambition was unimportant. So I sit here today thanking you for not wasting the last four, seven, or 18 years of our life because I am proud of who we have become and who we will be. Sincerely,

ou have come so far. You have knocked down barriers, overcome obstacles and defeated challenges that were deemed impossible to defeat. Through the tough times, you held your head up high and continued to persevere, despite the tiring battles. When times got hard, when you failed to succeed, you never gave up. As you continue down the road of life, it will be easy to give in, to fall apart and to break down as nothing worth having comes easy. There will be temptations, hardships and fear. There will be sadness, misery and brokenness. But, remember, you have come so far. As your journey continues, don’t lose sight of why you set out on your journey to begin with. You will continue to grow, blossom and thrive, but you have to keep your head held high and keep a positive mindset at the same time. With a positive mindset, well-established goals and mental strength, nothing will overtake you and your willingness to be the best you can be. There are several life lessons that should be adopted, but there are 10 things to always remember as you continue on your journey. Always show kindness to everyone you encounter, never stop trying, learn from your mistakes, take care of yourself mentally and physically, keep friends and family close, always strive to be better, never take yourself too seriously, everyone’s journey is different, it’s okay to move on and happiness is found within. Remind yourself of these ten things. Understand what these ten things mean to you and how you can implement them in not only your life, but the lives of those you surround yourself with. We can all become better, and rise by lifting others. Remember to never lose sight of who you are, be you and be true. Sincerely,

Some of my favorite memories from high school come from the competition trips I would take for DECA. In one specific competition, my group and I got second place in Business Services and Operations. Hearing our names called was a really exciting moment and we felt like our hard work had paid off.

One of my favorite memories of high school is definitely my senior year Dance Marathon. It was such a different experience for me this year, so being able to see our group’s hard work pay off was amazing. Also, just knowing throughout the night that that would be my last high school Dance Marathon made everything feel really bittersweet so it was definitely a special night.

You are a big portion of the reason I’ve accomplished what I have up to this point in my life. Your determination mixed with your competitive spirit pushed me to be more successful than I otherwise would’ve been in many areas of my life. Both academically and athletically, you challenged me to get better at everything I did. Although there are a lot of people that I can thank for my achievements, you are one of the more significant impacts. I suppose that’s one reason I should look forward to going to the same college; you’ll probably push me there as well, even more so than I could push myself on my own. So thank you for pushing me to always be a better version of myself. peyton

dear peyton,

Throughout the last twelve years of school, we have been close in almost everything we do. In elementary school, we had all the same teachers, went to football practice together, and sent each other to the doctor’s office in gym class. In middle school, we biked to school together, shared some classes, and went to lacrosse practices together. High school was a little different— with the size of Carmel, we didn’t share as many classes and most people never knew the other twin existed. However, we still had some SRTs together, went to track practices together, and somehow ended up running cross country together senior year, although you were much faster. College next year will be very different, but some things will stay the same: we will both be Boilermakers, both be study engineering, and the legacy of the Sandlin twins will live on! logan

I am going to miss you more than you know. In our family of four sisters, you fill a different role for each of us. For little Vera, you are the TikTok instructor, the book reader, the master chef. She’s been able to love you as “another mama” and you have been able to witness her growth from a unique, 15 years older perspective. For Georgia, your little twin, you have been the cool teenager, always up for an adventure. You have modeled lively and exciting teenage years that she will aspire to experience. For me, you are my partner in crime. I love being a fellow big sister with you. From Dunkin’ runs to road trips, you find a way to make each and every day one to remember. Whether it be bringing my textbook to school or covering my chores, I always know you have my back...even from Bloomington. I hope I can continue to teach the “littles” as you have taught me: to work hard, to find joy in the little things, and above all be kind. While we still have plenty of sisters here, you have a special place in all of our hearts, and we will miss you next year. IU and the Wells program are beyond lucky to have you. love, nora and vera

dear jaehee,

dear taehee,

You have been a great role model in my life...but I’m also happy that you’ll be going to college. Before you go, I want to say thanks. Thanks for constantly nagging me and making sure that I don’t do anything stupid like keeping my buzz cut. Thanks for listening to me play Joplin’s Elite Syncopations constantly even though I know you do not appreciate ragtime. And thanks for transforming me into the person I am today. You have been able to persevere through difficult times and I know that whatever challenge you face, you’ll be able to overcome it. I’ll miss walking to school with you, having you look at me with disappointment every time I mess up in orchestra, and being in the same band class. When you’re gone, who can I talk to about taking the real estate agent test? Anyway, always remember—no matter what anyone tells you, jaywalking is still a crime.

My favorite ice breaker is telling people what my name and your name mean. People always laugh awkwardly when they find out Jaehee means joy and Taehee means GREAT joy. I’m excited to not have that one adjective loom over my head in college. But I’m gonna miss you barging into my room to tell me about the Kevin Bacon effect and how I should watch The Mentalist. You never fail to impress me with your sleep schedule either; never let anyone tell you only getting four hours of sleep is something to brag about. Learn a Liszt piece, cut back on playing League, and don’t stop reading those entrepreneurship books. If I’m being honest, I think you’ve earned that adjective before the word joy. But I can’t let your ego get big because that’s my job. So let’s just say that the meanings of our names are just blatant favoritism.

WORKFORCE

DELANEY KIBLER

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO NEXT YEAR?

WHY AN INTERNSHIP INSTEAD OF COLLEGE?

I technically don’t know yet, but (I’m doing) a paid apprenticeship (at Steppenwolf Theatre). (It’s) in the Chicago theater district, and it does a lot of different types of plays, particularly ones that are hardhitting and influential, as opposed to mainstream plays that have no substance. I basically am assistant stage manager, and I would get experience doing whatever the stage manager needs me to do throughout the entirety of the play process, which is about seven months.

I think that for my desired career path (director), it’s the smartest and most cost-efficient thing to do. I have had so much experience in high school with directing and stage managing that I think my resume is good enough to get me into a good internship without having to go to college. Plus, school just isn’t for me. I can’t sit and learn, which is why tech theater was my favorite class. We were always moving, building and creating.

WHY THE MARINES?

THIJS BOOM MARINES

My job will be infantry in the Marines. I will be attending college afterwards, (and there, I will) probably (study) something generic like business, which could be applied to multiple career fields. I’m going to the Marines first so that I can get my college paid for through the GI Bill. Also, I’ve just always wanted to go into the military.

TRADE SCHOOL Also known as vocational or technical school, gives students the technical skills to prepare them for a specific field like nursing or plumbing

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO NEXT YEAR?

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THIS ROUTE?

I plan on attending Hobart Welding Institute in the fall, which is a trade school that is 10 months long. After my 10 months, I’m either going (to) go straight to the workforce or hopefully, if all things work out well, (work) for the Navy.

With welding, it’s all about experience. You can study welding, but if someone goes to college and studies welding for four years, someone (else could be) like, “Oh, I’ve been welding for four years actually.” It gives them a little head start on their career. When I go to Hobart and get all that training, it should set me up well to get a good job.

WHY GO TO HOBART BEFORE THE NAVY? The pay (at the Navy) could be better if I got my previous training before I joined the Navy. Hobart is basically the Harvard of welding schools. It’s very high-end, so if I graduate from Hobart, that would be good on my resume. It really shows how good I am. I want to contribute that to the Navy.

RY

WHY TRADE SCHOOL? Trades are really in need right now, and they can offer a ton of opportunities. While I’m not saying going to college is bad, if you just don’t know what you want to do, I wouldn’t say go to college. (That’s) like (wasting) a couple of years and (being) like, “I actually want to do this.” Really look into what you want to do. Don’t just look at college— look at other routes like trade.

(It) actually encourages you to get a college degree while you’re on active duty, so they have easy connections to online colleges that will help you get whatever degree you want, and they will pay for it.

DREW GOINS COAST GUARD

Kassandra is undecided where she will attend in the fall

I always wanted to protect people and wanted to go to the military because of my grandpa, so I was looking at all the branches, and I felt like the Coast Guard was the best fit for me. I ship out to basic training July 14, unless this coronavirus gets worse, and I am doing four years as of right now. I would like to be a cop whenever I get out.
