COMMODORE’S REPORT This was the address I gave the members at the AGM on Sunday the 12th August, but I thought I would share it with all members, via Compass. I will give you an overview of how HYC performed, in its varied activities, over the last 12 months. The 2017-2018 trading year proved to be very challenging due to the economic downturn in WA and the flow on effect it has to many parts of the community, especially in recreation and hospitality, which has created weaker demand across our Profit Centers that operate in this space. The Treasurer’s Report shows a small but well-earned surplus for the year, both in our financial performance and cash position. The Executive and Management Committee, along with the General Manager, continue to focus on new ways of generating business, reinvigorating the way we do things, and listening to members on how to do things better, I thank all those involved. As Commodore, I visit many other Clubs for Opening Days, Commodores’ Balls, Mess Nights, etc. and in talking to other Clubs, they are also in the same situation, and to be honest - Hillarys Yacht Club is going OK in comparison to many. We are well positioned to enjoy a prosperous future and thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Executive & Management Committees and its many Volunteers, you can be assured of receiving the maximum value for your membership dollar, in a superb environment. So, I will briefly discuss our various sections

Angling The Angling Section have enjoyed reasonably good participation with competitions in both boat angling and beach fishing. Big thanks to Garry Cunningham, our Rear Commodore, for driving this section. The mid-week fishing trips continue to be very popular - possibly due to successful bag catches on the day - and I strongly recommend all members to participate in this very affordable group activity. Junior Fishing Clinics, run by angling section volunteers, have seen up to 20 participants enjoying the opportunity afforded to them during school holidays. The 2018 Harbour Classic was once again a great success with over $20,000 in prizes and we pleasantly saw some of our own Club members on the winner’s podium - what a great result!

Dive The Dive Section have had 34 dives this year, two more than last year and the cray count, obviously the Dives section most important KPI, was up to 504 legal sized crays, down from 545 the previous year so either the crays are getting smarter or the Dive section are getting slower. I will let you

decide, but with a nickname like Fossil for James, our Rear Commodore, it’s probably the latter. The dive section are not just about catching 500 crays and not sharing them with us, they are also developing into a Fox Studios, where during their dives, they shot some 40,000 images, and were invited to participate in the Fremantle Sailing Club’s annual photo competition, where Jon Tomkins took out first prize for his portfolio of “Caves of Rotto” and June Sullivan came in third for her portfolio on “Creatures Great and Small”. Fantastic photos and some great results. The have also been busy around the club, conducting weight retrievals, and also cleaning the marina floor within our harbour of junk and debris that somehow gets on the sea bed, so on behalf of HYC, thank you for doing that.

Marina Facilities As always, under the watchful eye of Rear Commodore Rob Gillespie, the band of volunteers from Marina Facilities were very busy. They inspected 50 odd vessels for compliance and maintained the service program for weights, chains, eyebolts and other fittings with those requiring replacement done so in a timely manner. I am also happy to report many significant achievements saw the completion of several long-term outstanding maintenance issues, and of course commencement of new ones.

Power The section, under the guidance of Leigh Clifton and his merry band of helpers, had a significant increase in members attending functions and events, the Wine Tour and the Pirates Evening were very well attended. Australia Day celebrations were held at Narrow Neck at Rotto, and was very well attended; well Leigh thinks it was, he could not remember too much the next morning! They had a Twilight event organized at the Club to take Members of HYC on a Twilight Cruise in February and watch the sunset with a spit roast afterwards. Unfortunately it was blowing 20-plus knots from the SW, and the cruise had to be cancelled. However, there was still 90 members partying in Pinkies Wet Bar, enjoying a spit roast and plenty of drinks. They also purchased a pre-loved playground, travelled to Serpentine to dismantle it, brought it back to HYC, and it is now erected next to Pinkies Wet Bar. When completely finished, I am sure there will be many Mums and Dads with small kids that are very appreciative of what the Power Section have achieved. Many, many thanks to all involved. As Commodore, the increased activity in our Power section events is very pleasing and I look forward to participating in the many events in the forthcoming season. Well done to Leigh and all active members of that section.

Sailing The past year has seen a lot of activity in our various Sailing Sections. One of our members (Todd Giraudo) and David White, not only cruised from Hillarys to Melbourne, departing on our last Opening Day, they then competed in the Melbourne to Hobart Race, collecting 2nd Overall on IRC, but also used these

passages as the prelude to racing from Melbourne to Osaka Japan, a 36-day race covering some 5000 nautical miles with a small deviation for a cyclone thrown in. They were second in IRC Overall, a great, truly outstanding result for a doublehanded event, Just Todd and teammate Dubbo on board. We have had another member, Kevin Farebrother, undertake the huge task of preparing a vessel to compete in the Golden Globe Race, a solo around-the-world odyssey using a fifty year old boat design and technology, and shipping it all to the other side of the world for the start. Unfortunately, Kevin had to pull out of this event, but even getting to the start and competing was a great achievement. Well done Kevin, and I am sure he will be back to compete in something else in years to come. Hillarys hosted the Sail Easter Regatta for the first time this the year with over 60 competitors from around the state. It is a very complex task to organize all the on-water management for the various classes and different starts as well as the offwater support to cater for all the visiting sailors and families. It was a great success and looks like going on to a greater high next year with increased numbers. We have received many compliments on how professionally the event was run. It makes us all proud to be associated with a club where the office staff and members can work together so efficiently. These sorts of events bring members together in a volunteering and organizational role, forming new friendships as well as showcasing the fun and professional atmosphere here at HYC to other clubs. Our dinghy section was well represented in the QLD National Championships over Christmas/New Year in both lasers and optimists and planning is well under way for this year’s nationals in Tasmania. The dinghy section has been steadily growing in numbers but this year we have seen a big jump in juniors entering the section, something that has no doubt been assisted by the very successful Tackers displays over at Hillarys Marina beach organized by our training department and the section. The Cruising in Company section is still strong and when the weather has not been ideal for relaxing on the water, they have embarked on activities together like bowling or dinners, or just getting together to have a drink and chat, as like-minded people do from time to time.

Social On a social note, we always have plenty of activities, which are always very well patronised, such as the Commodore’s Ball, Melbourne Cup event and New Year’s Celebrations. In the last 12 months, we have conducted a couple of ad hoc events, and most recently an evening with Landslide, a great band covering a lot of Fleetwood Mac and Eagles songs, with some 220 enjoying the evening until midnight. I understand we might be having a few more of these events, in which members can invite guests to showcase our fantastic yacht club to a wider audience. Our reciprocal agreement with Joondalup Country Club is the first agreement of this type to deliver such great success in expanding the social fabric of HYC. I am pleased to see the Joondalup members not just patronizing our restaurants and bars on a regular basis but also singing our praises.

Training and Development Again we have been busy in this area, Hillarys Yacht Club, was in the Top 10 Sailing/Yachting Clubs nationally for delivering accredited training, based on certificates issued. We have completed 328 Tackers and Start Sailing Courses in the past year, which has started to feed our Junior Sailing Programs and HYC were second in the state in courses delivered, behind RFBYC. We are now training more instructors to cater for the increased demand in junior and youth programs. Well done to Chris Kelly and to Danny for the support shown in this area. We have another public event on Saturday 8th of September in the basin at the Marina, showcasing our Tackers program and HYC, whereby we expect to get 350 kids to go for a sail, as we did last year. A couple of our members that have come through our sailing programs on previous years achieved some good results this year. Marcus Fisk finished 9th in the Laser Nationals at Christmas time in the most competitive dinghy fleet in Australia, and Eleanor Wise has been included in WA State Sailing squad for Laser Radials. Well done to these fine young members.

General I must thank the Ladies & Gentlemen in the Tuesday Group that assist the Club in many ways, by selling sweep tickets at our Melbourne Cup Function, assisting with the mail out of Compass, and other tasks around the Club, so well done to all involved. The Tuesday Group are on the look-out for new members, so if you think you can help, please call the Club on 9246 2833. Another great campaign from our Marketing Team has been the successful promotion of our Corporate Brochure. You will have seen the small booklet around the Club and possibly in your local shopping areas, which is designed for awareness of what we do and can offer at HYC. It offered members and sponsors an opportunity to promote their products and services without attracting a cost to the Club. Good to see the Fat Boys and Fit Chicks riding and walking on a Wednesday afternoon at 4pm. Going for around an hour followed by a debrief in the Bar afterwards, this is not an exclusive group, its open to any members that have a push bike or a pair of walking shoes. The groups cater for all ages and have a great time. We often speak about our volunteers; we praise them for their hard work, their friendship and their dedication to the Club, thank you once again. In addition, a massive thanks to all Flag Officers and Officials, past and present, who dedicate a lot of time and effort into this great club, which has ensured it is one of the most respected Clubs along the Western Australian Coast. GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Annual General Meeting We rounded up the previous year with our AGM on Sunday 12th August. Presentation of the years’ financials, the reports of the Commodore, Treasurer and Constitutional Compliance Committee were all delivered and accepted by those in attendance. Continuing tight economic conditions resulted in a small surplus, a little improved on the previous year. Reduced revenues, ever increasing costs and an environment in which spending seems to have tightened again continue to have an effect on the operations of the Club. As we move into another year, Management, Officers and Staff will continue support and provide facilities and services for the benefit of the Club and membership. It was heartening, during the AGM, to receive enquiries from members interested in their responsibilities as members and their respect for the rights of membership. In follow up to those enquiries, I provide the below from the By-Laws and Liquor Licensing, supporting the discussions during the meeting.

1.4. GUESTS All allowed Members as specified in the Club Constitution shall have the privilege of introducing guests to the Club premises provided that: 1.4.1 No guest shall be allowed in the licensed premises of the Club whilst the bar is open unless his or her name has been recorded in the Visitors Book by the Member who has invited such guest or guests and such Member shall be responsible for the conduct and dress of such guest or guests. 1.4.2. No member shall invite more than five (5) guests to the Club on any one occasion without prior approval from the Commodore or General Manager. 1.4.3. A guest may not be supplied with liquor other than to be consumed on and in the Club’s premises. 1.4.4 The number of visits permitted to each guest shall be five (5) or as prescribed from time to time by the Management Committee. Further to the above, it is always necessary when booking a table in the premises of the Club, to understand these requirements and always provide your membership and telephone number to confirm your booking. Members also raised concern that there were members with guests and non members not adhering to these requirements. In response, it was highlighted: should a member believe these regulations are not being followed, it is part of their responsibility as a member to bring to the attention of Management, Duty Officers or senior staff, their concern that a guest or non member is utilising the facilities of the Club outside of allowed access.

Management Committee, in its future meetings, will review access to the Club and expects to implement additional processes to identify, support and protect the rights and benefits of membership. Hillarys Yacht Club is a Members’ Club, for all member categories to enjoy, remain welcoming and to utilise the facilities and rewarding benefits of membership.

20 Years of Service Also during August, the 24th to be precise, our long time bookkeeper, Sheryl Begbie, reached this amazing milestone. Sheryl has been an incredibly reliable and committed employee of the Club. She has supported and maintained high bookkeeping standards assisting our management over many years, including the change, growth and development of the Club. In discussion with Sheryl, I don’t believe she intends to change anything, and like many of our long time employees wishes to continue providing for the Club. I would like to sincerely thank Sheryl on behalf of the Club for her sustained effort.

Social Groups at HYC As well as a vibrant social scene with Club events and within the watersports activities, the Club also has a few social groups that get together regularly. The Fat Boys The self-titled group bring a good sense of humour to exercise and a healthy lifestyle, enjoying a bike ride along the coast every Wednesday at 4pm (weather permitting) before enjoying a few drinks back at the Club. Various levels of fitness are catered for but most will agree that the real motivation is the beer with friends on Wednesday afternoons!

The Fit Chics

The Tuesday Group Originally started in 1993 for members that were not allied to any other group within the Club, the Tuesday Group has grown and developed into a fun-loving social group that also volunteers around the Club, predominantly with the distribution of our quarterly Compass Magazine. The group attends Club social events together as well as their own get-togethers where you’ll find some of the best cakes you’ve ever seen! The Tuesday Group are in need of some ‘new blood’, so look no further for your welcoming new group of friends!

Originally started as the wives’ answer to The Fat Boys, The Fit Chics has become a vibrant walking group in its own right. While the men push pedals, the women pound the pavement with a walk down the coast and back, taking in the ocean views and having a good natter along the way. At 5pm, back at the Club Bar, the group transforms into The Sip Chics to enjoy a drink on the Club verandah! Northern Perth Reef The fishing project everyone is talking about.

Perth’s northern suburbs are about a year and a half away from an angler’s and diver’s dream: our very own artificial reef right on our doorstep. Still in its initial planning stage, Recfishwest is currently undertaking public consultation to help understand the community’s fishing desires, expectations and preferred broad reef location. Using funds from the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (money that comes from licence money fees), this reef could potentially become a major attraction for locals and visitors to the state of WA. The question now is: What do locals want from a new reef, and where should it be installed? Recfishwest are the peak body representing over 750,000 WA fishers. Independent of any government department, the organisation is not for profit and aims to ensure great fishing experiences for everyone in the WA community.

What is an artificial reef? An artificial – or purpose built – reef is simply a structure specifically designed to enhance fish habitat and production by providing food and shelter for a range of species. Make no mistake – this is not junk or “materials of opportunity” thrown onto the ocean floor with crossed fingers that it’ll do more good than harm. These are thoughtfully designed concrete or steel structures built in specific shapes and configurations to attract certain types of species: A high, vertical reef will attract pelagic fish (tuna, mackerel, trevally),

a lower vertical reef is more suited to demersal fish (pink snapper, dhufish etc.) and a low flat reef provides ideal homes for lobsters, crabs, King George and other bottom fish. Artificial reefs are designed to be seven times more productive than natural reefs, they are environmentally friendly, current-altering and provide a stable environment for a wide variety of fish. With no toxins to damage the area (unlike “materials of opportunity”), the reefs come with an expectation of conserving biodiversity, increasing the opportunities for recreational fishing and, depending on your skills, holding up a bigger fish for that all important photo. There are several artificial reefs already established across WA, from Exmouth to Esperance, and each one seems to come with its own story: The Mandurah reef survived a wild bushfire before it was sunk and divers can still see the scars underwater. The Rottnest Fish Towers is the tallest purposebuilt reef in Australia at 12.5m, and the first in WA to be made of metal. The Esperance reef (due for deployment September 2018) actually has a focus on safety after a thorough consultation process with locals. All these reefs are a result of community drive and a desire to enhance the biodiversity of species and enhance the fishing opportunities available in their selected regions.

A long, involved process As with the design, determining the exact location of the reef is a long process. The viable location options diminish with each consultation with key bodies introducing their own restrictions: shipping channels, military practice zones, cabling areas and marine protection zones dramatically constrain the possibilities. This process creates a short-list of deployment areas which is taken out to the community – the people who will actually use it – to determine the exact location. For WA’s next reef, the location will be somewhere in Perth’s North Metro area. Once a location is set, there are many official ‘hoops’ to jump through including a long list of bodies (Fisheries, Maritime Safety, Royal Australian Navy, Port Authorities, to name just a few) from which to secure approval and an exemption from the Australian Sea Dumping Act, which in itself requires approval from Government, Indigenous groups, military, shipping bodies etc. Only then can reef construction begin.

HYC Consultation Evening Hillarys Yacht Club hosted a consultation evening with Recfishwest in July 2018 which was very well attended by over 60 fishers and divers who braved the cold weather to learn more and have their say. The presentation from Recfishwest was informative and thorough and backed by a team of people who clearly live to fish. This is an organization of passionate people, absolutely dedicated to the providing bigger and better fishing opportunities.

The group of Flag Officers, divers, anglers and even a couple of very dedicated juniors was interested and vocal. All had questions. Would the reef attract sharks? Would we be able to dive around it? Would it become a major tourist attraction? Recfishwest listened intently and answered the best they could without a crystal ball predicting the future. With 300 hours of footage on existing reefs, they haven’t seen an increase in shark behavior (although sharks can learn, so there’s always a potential for them to be present). Yes, the intention is for SCUBA divers to enjoy the reef too and divers are urged to put their opinions forward so that this is a consideration in the design and location. The Esperance reef is tipped to be a huge attraction for the local area, and with its proximity to the city, the economic value of the Northern Perth Reef has the potential to be immense. So what does this mean for Hillarys? One message from Recfishwest was clear: This will be the people’s reef. Designed for the locals with no agenda or pre-conceptions. The consultation process is comprehensive and every opinion invited and heard. Could this be the best development for Hillarys’ anglers in decades? Will it place us at the centre of Australia’s best fishing spot? Will the barbeque be big enough for the size of fish we’ll catch? For now, it looks like you decide. CLUB EVENTS 2018 Commodore’s Ball Neil hosted his first Commodore’s Ball with great success. The crowd of over 200 included Government Officials, Commodores from neighboring clubs and many of our past and present Flag Officers. We were also happy to see some new faces amongst the crowd. The Black and White themed ball kicked off with red carpet photos, scrumptious canapés and sparkling wine, all while being amazed by the tricks the magician had up his sleeve. Yet again, the Chefs did a great job, trying some new things this year which was received well. “Tod Johnson & Peace Love“ got the party started, playing all the crowd favorites!

Landslide played the best of the Eagles & Fleetwood Mac This was such a great success with over 240 members and their guests being transported back in time enjoying all of the old hits! We received such great feedback we have decided to have Landslide back later in the year with a new show playing all of the pub rock classics. Christmas in July The room was set ready for the Christmas cheer with yet again another sell out event with music from the duo Pretty Fly. Mark Taylor

Age and membership At the age of 50, Mark is a relatively new comer to sailing - his first steps into sailing began in 2014 when he and the family joined HYC and Mark immediately embraced the club culture riding with the Fat Boys cycling group and crewing with Chris Grant on Pandora.

Family Background Born in Perth and growing up in Cottesloe, Mark married childhood sweetheart Corinne 25 years ago, moving to Innaloo and now Hillarys. They have three children: Devon currently studying nursing at ECU, Bryce in Year 11 and Talia in Year 8, both at St Marks.

Occupation Starting a mechanical apprenticeship at 15, Mark worked at several locations before he and Corinne started their own business “Automark“ in March 2000. Quickly realising the business would outgrow the small workshop, they moved to a purpose-built workshop in Winton Road, Joondalup in 2009.

Yachts and Achievements Before joining HYC, the only sailing experience Mark had previously was windsurfing on the river as a teenager. Within months of joining the club, a boat “Helga” had been purchased in Geographe Bay and sailed back to Hillarys. One of the first races she competed in was the Rottnest race with the WOW (Women on Water) team and Chris Kelly at the helm (Mark was in hospital having his appendix out). Since then, Mark has competed in almost every race on the

calendar, rarely letting go of the helm. Helga won the Ocean Series Trophy 2017/18. Crewing on Perle in the Dirk Hartog commemorative race in 2016 was an experience Mark won’t forget easily, sailing from Fremantle to Geraldton and then Geraldton to Denham and encountering some, let’s say, interesting weather has been Mark’s biggest race to date. When work commitments allow, Mark intends to make these sorts of passages a more frequent occurrence.

HYC Perspective Mark believes the welcoming atmosphere of HYC is our biggest asset. Things don’t have to be taken too seriously; you can be as competitive or as relaxed as you want to be. Bryce started sailing optimists almost as soon as the family joined and has now progressed to a Laser taking it to the Nationals in Brisbane with Mark last January. Corinne spends a lot of her time coordinating the running of the Dinghy Snack Shack on most race days. Members are welcomed and encouraged to join in in whatever capacity they feel comfortable and be rewarded for that participation by being welcomed into the larger family of HYC. As Rear Commodore Sailing, Mark enjoys trying to grow the club while keeping it grounded in its roots - a water sports club based around, and encouraging, participation.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Winter activities have been busy and involved with Keel and Dinghy Winter Series Racing and continuous development of squad training programmes. A number of new crew were introduced to keel boat sailing during the series which will only help development during the summer series. Dinghy numbers have increased 300% on last year’s winter series numbers and training numbers also have continued to increase.

The Tackers Free Day is scheduled for September 8 from 9:00am - 12:30pm and has already received interest from over 150 to date. This is hoped to be another spectacular day as it was last year. A number of HYC sailors have been invited to participate in the Westsail programme which is to be conducted in the first week of the September school holidays with the WA Youth Championships to be conducted on the Wednesday and Thursday. HYC will conduct school holiday training courses in the second week of the holidays. Applications to attend these courses are available on the Club’s website. A flare demonstration will be held for all members on Friday October 5th at 6:00pm. ALL members are welcome. With the new season’s Opening Day scheduled for Sunday October 7th, all Members are encouraged to participate.

Best Dive sites: The shark cave, Rottnest Many people are scared of sharks and there is a lot of hype in the newspapers every time someone sees a shadow in the water. The fact of the matter is that in 2018 more people have been killed in Australia by Rock Melons than by sharks (Rock Melons 4, Sharks 0). Although, to many divers, sharks are something we often want to see when we’re diving, well smallish ones, that is. There are many nice dive sites around Perth and some amazing ones around Rottnest, in particular. There’s one (maybe two) world-class dives around Rottnest out to the West End. It’s called “Shark Cave” and last year HYC divers were privileged to dive it at least three times! To dive Shark Cave, we need really calm conditions as it’s at the roughest, most exposed part of the Island on the South West corner. The cave is famous as it’s a known hangout for Grey Nurse sharks (the same type they have in AQWA). Grey Nurse sharks can grow up to 3m long and look quite fierce but are mostly harmless to humans - despite a mouth full of pointy ragged teeth, they are avid fish eaters (long pointy teeth for grabbing fish not tearing flesh). They also have an amazing talent: most sharks sink if they don’t move forward, but Grey Nurses can go to the surface and take air into their stomachs to balance their buoyancy and hang almost motionless, gentle, calm.

During one dive in Shark Cave there were three or four Grey Nurse sharks, but on another there were five to seven sharks inside the main shark cave and two more underneath a smaller ledge cave outside. The Shark Cave itself is a wonderful dive - even without the sharks. Its entrance is at 15m depth and sticks up above the plateau of the reef about 10m, while plunging down inside the reef another 10m. It consists of one huge slanting slab of rock overhanging another. In the roof of the cave are several holes forming “skylights” which cause beams of glittering light to wash down into the cave with huge schools of small fish gathering in the roof near the holes. Sharks gently glide through the shoals like an airship moving through a flock of birds. Magic! To date I’ve made just under 1800 dives on five continents and seen some amazing sights, but this site is one of the best and certainly in my Top 10, possibly Top 5 dives ever. We are privileged to have such a great site on our doorstep and there are others just as good around Rottnest. We are also privileged to have the boat and the opportunity with HYC Divers and Balaton Jack to be able dive a world-class site. If you are a certified diver, come dive with us. If not, come talk to us and we’ll help steer you to a good training centre. Diving is a life-long adventure for all ages, Jacques Cousteau (who invented modern SCUBA) was 83 when he stopped diving and we have divers in our group aged 15.  Ian “Sharky” Jones

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7.00pm 8 Sept: Free Tackers Day

It has been fantastic to see the growing interest in dinghy sailing over the last few months with a number of new members and sailors joining the dinghy section. This has been a result of the very successful school holiday Tackers program implemented by HYC development and marketing teams. This growth should continue with more school holiday programs planned and as the weather warms up for the summer season. A reinvigorated committee is producing results in the areas of communications and shed management. Our thanks go to Verma for the implementation of Team App for sailor and supporter information and attendance notification, and to Katie and her helpers for shed organisation. It was a great start to our winter series with over 30 boats braving the cold morning starts for race days one and two. It was encouraging to see a number of new green fleet Optimist sailors starting their sailing career. On race days, warm soup made by our sailing mums provides very welcome relief to cold sailors. The weather however wasn’t on our side with a number of successive winter race days having to be postponed with 20–30 knot winds and rough seas. This time, however, was not wasted and good use of the conditions was made to practice rescue techniques by our on-water support volunteers. Off water activities have also been taking place, with sailors working on their fitness and sailing theory. In-between winter racing, some HYC dinghy sailors have been competing in the FSC Huck Scott series. It’s great to see how well HYC sailors do in these regattas with a number of sailors doing very well in the placings. Also, two of our race committee volunteers have been giving a helping hand to the Huck Scott race management team. It’s great to hear reports on how professional and organized our HYC race volunteers are, especially when it comes from another club. We congratulate Bryce Taylor for winning the HYC Junior Sports Star award, in recognition for his achievements throughout the year at Sail Easter, Royal Perth, and State Championships in the Laser 4.7 class. Our junior sailors recently cheered the return of their Tackers instructor, Eleanor Wise, wondering “where has she been?” Eleanor has been selected for the

The WASS squad, directed by Australian Sailing, is a youth pathway squad designed to assist and foster talented Western Australian sailors striving toward high performance pathways. The program involves weekly on water activities and off water strength and conditioning sessions which rotate through three Perth clubs throughout the scholarship period. Other off water sessions include physiology, nutrition and discussions on life-study-sport balance. Sailors must commit to the Laser class national titles, Australian youth national titles, Class state titles , WA youth championships and all major local inter-club regattas. This includes three WASS weekend camps and attending all HYC club winter and summer competitions. In addition, sailors are expected to do self motivated gym and aerobic training to increase their overall fitness. It sounds like a huge commitment for a seventeen year old with all the distractions of teenage life but in Eleanor’s case it is simply an extension of what has already been a long term commitment to sailing from the age of 10. We wish Eleanor all the best in her future sailing endeavors.

Bart’s Bash will be held in September with a Guinness world record attempt of the largest sailing race in 24 hours at multiple locations. The dingy section will most certainly be a part of this and we welcome all dingy sailors to participate. Dinghy parents and adult sailors are invited to “frock up” and join the rest of the HYC Sailing community at the Pre-season Cocktail Party, on 14 September with a movie night planned for the juniors at the same time. We also look forward to Dinghy participation in the Season

Lithium in action in a winter race

Wet, windy, winter racing A series of cold fronts didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of sailors to get out on the water for the Winter Series. The handicap starts produced some close tussles at the finish with wins to Sally Malay, Perle, Jack Tar and Whispering Jack in division one. In division two HYC Training, Helga, Show Me, Volant and Panache scored blue ribbons whilst in division three Catabatic, Anastasia and Vaya Con Dios were victorious. The final race determined the trophy winners in all divisions. Thanks to Marshall for manning the start/finish tower. The overall winners were: Div 1: Lithium, skippered by Wayne Pitcher Div 2: HYC Training, skippered by Chris Kelly Div 3: Catabatic, skippered by Rob Bills

September Action Apart from the Grand Final there is a pre-season cocktail party for sailors and partners on Friday 14th September and Bart’s Bash on Sunday 16th. It is hoped there will be a good turn-out for both events. Apart from being the largest yacht race conducted simultaneously around the world, Bart’s Bash raises money for worthwhile youth sailing endeavours. September is also a great month to get the boat ready,

checking all equipment is working and in date to procure the racing safety certificate prior to the start of the summer season.

New boats, new and old hands. Rivalling Surfer Rosa as the club’s fastest boat is Lithium brought in by Wayne Pitcher with Dart Vader now sailed by Scott Eiszle and Neil Ireland. Larraine Brindle let go of Sublime and picked up Anastasia from Albany whilst Tony Waymouth is straddling Sheer Magic and Viking Lady. Bruce and Chelsea Bradford acquiring Whispering Jack has shown a turn of speed, winning their first race. The summer racing season is shaping up to be a beauty.

Fremantle to Geraldton 50th Race Six weeks out from the start of this iconic race usually sailed in very challenging breezes from the south (the return race is worse) a significant number of four entries from HYC intend being there. Stepping back to the Golden Age of solo sailing Les Sables d’Olonne, a little coastal town in north-west France is famous for being the home of the Vendée Globe which is a single-handed non-stop yacht race around the world without assistance. I headed there to catch up with Kevin Farebrother, a friend of mine who had decided to take part in the recreation of the first non-stop single-handed round the world yacht race. The aim was for all the competing boats to arrive at Falmouth by 11th June 2018, for a parade around the expanse of Falmouth Harbour led by both Suhaili, the boat that Knox-Johnston skippered in the original race and Gypsy Moth IV, Chichester’s yacht. Then at 14:30hrs a gun would be fired and we would race in “The SITraN Challenge Charity Race” to Les Sables d’Olonne (approx. 350 nm), prior to the commencement of the round the world race. Kevin had asked for me to sail with him in the SITraN race. This would be the last opportunity he would have to sail with someone else on-board with GPS, autopilot, electronic charts, iPad, wind speed indicator, sat phone etc. before being removed to recreate the conditions of the original race in 1968. Kevin was going to have to navigate by sextant and get his weather forecasts by contacting passing ships or reading the clouds and his barometer. Arriving in Les Sables d’Olonne was very humbling. Hundreds of people lined the harbour entrance and cheered as the boats entered the marina. The next few days were spent attending numerous briefings and press calls as well as provisioning for the epic voyage ahead. So, what does somebody take to eat on a non-stop, round the world trip lasting 300 days? The answer is simple: ‘a lot’. About 200 tins I counted in total. Then there are all the packets of biscuits - about 50 of them. Breakfast cereal by the wheelbarrow load and jars of jam and honey,

tea and coffee, 70 litres of long life milk and 10 tins of powdered milk. Plus, 200 freeze-dried high-energy meals. Ten 2kg drums of freeze-dried muesli, and high altitude high energy snacks. Kevin is a chocoholic so he had over 120 bars of Cadbury’s stashed away too. I left France and returned to the UK approximately ten days before the start. Kevin was joined by close family and I felt by then I could do no more to help him on his way. The race commenced on 1 July and was broadcast live on French national TV. I watched from an armchair, with a beer in one hand and a burger in the other. Epilogue As of 10th August the race has now been going for five weeks and the fleet are spread along the west coast of Africa and most are through the doldrums. Of the 18 original entrants, the fleet is now down to 12; one never left the start line, his boat did not get through the safety scrutineers, a second boat pulled into La Corunna on the north coast of Spain after just six days, the contestant claiming that the loneliness was not something he had been able to mentally adjust to. Three more were to throw in the towel by the time they had reached the Canary Islands. Unfortunately Kevin was one of them. Lack of sleep, his inability to get the self-steering system to function correctly along with concerns over the constructional integrity of his rig were the reasons given. Others too had issues with their self-steering systems, some were able to fix them, others not. Kevin has returned to the mountains. He has no regrets and has enjoyed the experience. Lawn Bowls at Osborne Park Bowling club We had twelve Cruising In Company members arrive at 10.30 at the Osborne Park venue. Our organizing Captains Sue and John Bird , invited us all into the foyer of the club to meet with the Club Manager and discuss our planned activity . With threatening rain and wind 20-25 knots from the west and greens that were already quite wet under foot from the overnight rain, a suggestion was made that the bowls would need a double reef put in to bowl down-wind and as for headed into the wind, tacking across the green was frowned upon. After a brief discussion involving the conditions of the day, the general decision was made to abort the lawn bowls and reschedule to another day. However, the scheduled lunch at Café Ameretto became a late morning coffee and cake, which was most enjoyable, with prompt table service of our chosen hot beverage and delicious low calorie cakes. Conversation amongst the group was enjoyed by all and the hours slipped by quickly, again some of the group had seats at the Optus Stadium to occupy and enjoy aerial ping pong. With luck, they will stay dry along with the other 50,000 supporters of our wonderful AFL game. The rest of the group headed off to their vehicles and home for a wet Sunday afternoon relaxing, as you do. Thanks to Sue and John for organizing the land cruise but sadly the weather is beyond our control. Regardless, we all enjoyed ourselves...

ANGLING Welcome to the third Angling report for 2018 and this year is certainly flying by with Spring upon us. Fishing over the winter was not as good as it could be with large swells and plenty of rain - well at least the farmers love it! There was a bit of action in the May and June competitions but the July competition was cancelled and there was no Kids Fishing Clinic or Beach competition over the winter months.

May Boat Competition 15 Anglers took part in the May fishing competition with one lady and 14 men fishing and no juniors this time. Men’s Species Points Bag Weight Winner: Adrian Broadbent 4 48.74 2.37kg 2nd: Aiden Rinney 4 48.21 2.1kg rd: 3 Peter McGrady 4 45.90 0.98kg Ladies Winner: Ruby McGrady 4 47.44 1.72kg In total, 11 species were caught and the best fish of the compeition was a 2.60kg dhufish caught by Nick Fitt. Frank Antulov won the $100 Lucky Angler voucher.

May Beach Competition Nine anglers took part in the beach fishing with six men and three ladies. The fish were very elusive with lots of under- sized fish caught and not too many to weigh in. Men’s Species Points Bag Weight Winner: Lucas Pohl 2 25.53 0.268kg nd 2 : Allan McDiarmid 2 25.49 0.249kg Ladies Winner: Ruby McGrady 2 25.99 0.498kg The fish of the competition was a 0.365kg Mackerel caught by Ruby McGrady.

July Boat Competition The July Boat competition did not go ahead and the alternative day was also cancelled due to bad weather.

August Boat Competition On the Saturday before the competition, the water was magnificent and everyone was hoping for the same for Sunday’s competition. However, the forecast looked a bit dodgy and the competition went ahead and turned out to be pretty good by late morning. 16 anglers took part in with 11 men, three ladies and two juniors. Men’s Species Points Bag Weight Winner: Allan McDiarmid 8 106.96 6.48kg nd 2 : Ron Thornton 5 58.65 3.65kg 3rd: Ian McCall 4 51.59 7.49kg Ladies Winner: Ruby McGrady 4 47.68 3.68kg nd 2 : Annette Kirwan 3 35.51 1.51kg 3rd: Julie Loran 3 34.93 0.93kg Juniors Winner: Ashley McDiarmid 5 59.58 2.29kg 2nd: Renan Rascucci 4 45.84 0.92kg This was a great result for Renan, who was fishing in his first ever competition! although Allan McDiarmid caught a 2.54kg dhufish, the fish of the competition was Ian McCall’s 2.54kg Flathead - a magnificent sized fish that is rarely seen these days. Allan McDiarmid sneaks away as the overall leader for the Best Angler of the Year award. Chick Hoath won the $100 Lucky Angler voucher.

Monthly Fishing Competitions A fishing competition is held monthly, usually on the third Sunday of the month (subject to clashing with other events). The competition is also your chance to win prizes including the $100 free raffle draw for entering the fishing competition and a chance to pick a card for Jag The Joker which jackpots weekly. HYC member Geoff Tuke recently won the $1,000 jagpot and - for those who follow numbers - 17 would have been the lucky number. You can also get a double chance to win on the chocolate wheel for the heaviest fish of the day!

Kids Fishing Clinic No kids fishing clinics took place over the winter School Holidays and the next one will be in the September School Holidays, so all the kids from the last clinic please come down join in and try to improve on your last catch. All new kids are welcome! Registrations are online via the HYC website.

MARINA FACILITIES Inspection And Maintenance Alert For owners of Stainless Steel Anchor Chain, Swivels & Anchor Shackles: During last season, members of HYC reported that their stainless steel anchor chain had failed. The members lost their anchors and on inspection, many of the chain links had separated along the length of the chain. The Marina Facilities Committee researched the subject and found that this was a commonly reported event affecting stainless steel chain, swivels, and shackles. Most commonly relating to 316 stainless steel when used underwater in warm climates. There are many articles explaining the technical effects of stainless steel emersion in salt water. The technical terms for the effects are Stress Corrosion Cracking and Chloride Induced Stress Corrosion. Factors such as quality, engineering and fabrication, temperature, and duration of exposure to salt water all contribute to stainless steel failing under load.

1. Regular visual inspection of all components of an anchoring system for signs of corrosion, wear, faults or separation. 2. Stainless Steel Shackles are oversized and wired closed. 3. An alternate anchoring system is easily accessible for deployment if needed. 4. Anchor Position Alarm plotter functions, programs, and apps are used to provide an alert in the event of anchor failure or drag. 5. Elizabeth Quay Making great use of the long weekend in June, the HYC Power Section enjoyed a great weekend at Elizabeth Quay. The weather was just perfect and a good time was had by all with trips up the river in tenders and dinner at one of the restaurants. Thanks to Gary Bell for organising the trip.

Kids’ Playground The Power Section purchased and donated a kids‘ playground. The playground was dismantled in Serpentine, transported and stored on the club grounds for assembling. The call went out for volunteers and it was great to see so many willing to participate and help. The weather was against us with a lot of rain and wind but that did not stop us proceeding to put the playground together. Many thanks to all the volunteers - without their help this would not have been possible.
