COMMODORE’S REPORT Welcome to the Christmas edition of Compass! The Club is now into summer mode with sailing every weekend and diving and angling very active in their sections.

Opening Day Well, what a great turnout of Members, nonmembers, sail boats and power boats. There was plenty of activity around the Club, both on and off the water. The sail past was well supported, and one of the most spectacular I’ve seen, with record numbers from both sail and power! Congratulations to the Best Dressed Boat winners: Sheer Magic skippered by Tony Weymouth (sail) and Shore Shot skippered by Peter Roberts (power). Record numbers competed for the Commodore’s Cup in the Keelboat Section with 32 yachts over three divisions and over 20 in the dinghy division.

Discover Sailing Day Scheduled for Sunday 21st October, the weather was against us and unfortunately we had to cancel the onwater activities. Despite this, many came down to chat to HYC Members from every section and explore the Club and learn how they can get involved. It was wonderful to hear our current Members being so enthusiastic about their involvement and enjoyment in the Club and this, along with the month-long invitation for the general public to get involved in our activities, resulted in nearly 60 new members during the month of October. Those registered for Discover Sailing Day were invited to

come back for a sail at a later date and the Dinghy section completed their rescheduled “Discover Dinghies Sailing” on 10 November with great success. Thank you to all those volunteers who made themselves available for a second date.

Section Activities There has been a lot happening both on and off the water since the last Compass Magazine. The Power Section conducted one of their “famous” Twilight Cruises on Saturday 20th October but unfortunately, once again, the weather was not kind and the cruise was cancelled. However, well over 100 Members and friends participated in the gourmet Pig-on-a-Spit roast carvery and a great night was had by all. As always, thanks to Leigh Clifton and Graham Townsend from Minprovise for providing the Spit that was used on the night. The Sailing Section has had plenty on with Bart’s Bash on 16th September with 30 boats and over 70 sailors participating. We had four yachts compete in the Perth to Geraldton 50th Anniversary Classic, whereby we took the Top 4 places in division 2: well done Kraken, Lithium, Mulberry and Perle! We have added another three yachts to the keel fleet this summer so we send a warm welcome to Echo (Tony Hanavan), Whispering Jack (Bruce Bradford), Anastasia (Lorraine Brindle). We also welcome the new owners of Show Me, Tim & Katie Tucker and Louise Harvey as the new owner of Rushmere (formerly Sandrine). As the water warms up, the Dive Section is becoming more active so if you are interested in joining and participating in SCUBA dive trips, please contact James, the Rear Commodore of Dive. A number of keen divers have just returned from a dive expedition to Komodo Island and, we are pleased to report, nobody was attacked or taken by a Komodo Dragon Bart’s Bash 2018

Oktoberfest fills the Wet Bar

Again, the Angling section continues to be active in both boat and beach fishing, running monthly competitions and social angling during the week. If you’d like to get involved, please contact our Rear Commodore of Angling: Garry Cunningham.

The Social Scene Well, there has been plenty of action here! Oktoberfest was a great day for both Members and visitors. November saw over 200 guests for Melbourne Cup which was a fantastic party for all those involved. The band “Landslide” again filled the dance floor with “Classic Pub Anthems” in mid-November and it just shows that old rockers never die – they become members of HYC!

General As most of you are aware, we have a new team managing the Boat Lifting Yard, so please give them a call for your boat maintenance. Feedback from recent customers has been excellent and I’m confident they can get your boat ready for all your summer activities on the water. To all those Members that will be competing over Christmas in local regattas, national championships or the Sydney to Hobart race, HYC wishes you all the best and may luck be on your side. GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT We’re closing in on Christmas and all the pre-summer events - Fathers Day, Opening Day, our Discover HYC Month in October and Melbourne Cup - have been held with good attendances, fun, dancing and enjoyment with some nice weather to suit. There was also the Power Twilight with a 40kg Pig on the Spit, a very busy Oktoberfest and our Classic Pub Anthems band and dance night. The Power Twilight missed out on the better weather but the food was welcomed by all present and a fun event was enjoyed. Oktoberfest was a great day with German beer, themed food choices and a relaxed casual day appreciated by all the members and families socialising at the Club. October’s “Discover HYC Month” welcomed non-members to visit and try out what the Club has to offer. Nearly 60 new members signed up during the month. Most recently, the Classic Pub Anthems Night was another live music event where members and their guests enjoyed a casual night at the Club, dancing and enjoying the company of friends. It is always nice to see members enjoying events at the Club in addition to the weekly restaurant and bar specials, buffet and A La Carte menus and on-water activities. However, there are many members who miss out on these opportunities and the additional benefits of their membership. Did you know, 10% of members don’t use any of their food and beverage levy each year. Another 10% only use half their levy and another 10% use less than half of their total levy. This suggests around only 70% of members fully utilise the benefits of membership! Of course, within this group of members, there are many that enjoy the facilities ‘much more’ than just their quarterly levy. With the many added events filling the annual calendar, there are plenty of opportunities to attend the Club with friends and use up your levy.

Given the current economic climate and the majority seeking value for money, the Club is an obvious choice. Our menus are varied and affordable, our beverage and wine list pricing very competitive and lower than equivalent facilities, plus staff keen to provide quality service. Oh, and then there are the views! A truly high standard and among the best on offer. The new year, following our Retro New Year’s Eve Party, will see a new Sunday Carvery introduced at an affordable $25. Also during January, we will be distributing a survey to members seeking their thoughts and input on the hospitality offerings of the Club. As with all surveys, unless there is a good return response, the results may not be clear enough to act upon. Please take the time (and yes, it will be a quick survey) to provide some feedback on what it is that would see you visit, enjoy and use the facilities of the Club more often. Taking the time to submit the survey will put you in a draw for a welcomed reward. Did you also know that we offer $100 table draw on Friday nights when dining at the Club? If you’re at the Club you may be even luckier and win the weekly Members Draw! Here is the latest list of members drawn Friday evenings at 7.30pm in the Clubhouse. The drawn member needs to be present to collect the Jackpot, not friends of, sisters of, or five minutes away by car, they need to be in the building when drawn. Reciprocal Memberships have been used in clubs for decades - not only benefiting the clubs’ members, but also benefiting the clubs themselves. The ability to be introduced to a similar club when travelling has obvious benefits: a home away from home, an exclusive opportunity to experience warm hospitality ‘off the beaten track’ and away from other tourists and, of course, the option to enjoy a favourite pasttime whether it be angling, diving or sailing as part of your holiday. For clubs too, reciprocal arrangements carry a range of benefits: additional people enjoying the club’s facilities, being ‘put on the map’ as tourists spread the word in their home towns and the knowledge learned from comparisons with other clubs around the world. As a well established club, Hillarys Yacht Club has a number of long-standing reciprocal arrangements with various clubs around Australia and overseas and is continually looking for ways to improve member access to similar organisations at a local, national and international level to enhance the value that a Hillarys Yacht Club membership can offer. At the local level, Hillarys Yacht Club holds a reciprocal agreement with Joondalup Golf & Country Club which allows our members access to one of Perth’s best golf courses and includes discounts on food and beverage, accommodation, green fees and motor cart hire. with a number of clubs, including the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club that has the added benefit of providing accommodation and located about 20 minutes from downtown. The Singapore Air Force Yacht Club is currently redeveloping its facilities with the new design phase having been completed and now entering the tender phase. It is situated some distance away to the north of Singapore on the Straights of Johor. The Seychelles Yacht Club is situated in the suburb of Victoria with a short walk from the centre of town and overlooks the Indian Ocean. The facilities include showers, toilets, laundry, Wi-Fi, bar and restaurant. Visiting yachts are welcome with members of reciprocating clubs eligible for free membership for one month. The Venetian Yacht Club (Compania della Vela) in Venice, Italy has a historical Clubhouse just a stone’s throw from St Mark’s Square with a small but well visited restaurant. Limited accommodation is available and is on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, which is directly opposite St Mark’s Square. On a recent visit to the USA, Vice Commodore Fred Gere visited the California Yacht Club and met with Sallie Wolcott, Director of Membership which resulted in a new reciprocal agreement being reached. If you happen to be in Los Angeles, a visit to this prestigious club is a must. It is located in the beautiful Marina del Rey - the largest man-made small craft harbour in the Western Hemisphere. In addition to the striking views offered from its clubhouse, members can enjoy the use of the club’s spa and heated pool, play a game of paddle tennis or relax in the Member’s lounge or restaurant. The clubhouse and offices are open Wednesday to Sunday and members can enjoy the many dining services offered in addition to the formal and informal social events that the club is known for hosting. Our HYC families showed their appreciation to their Dads with another great turn out for Father’s Day. Over 460 people enjoyed the Father’s Day buffets along with the soothing sounds of Eddie Roberts over breakfast before Peter Dellecoste kicked it up a level for lunch followed by Cameron Dobbie with the dinner service. The kids where kept entertained by the Pop Magic Pirate Show over the lunchtime sitting.

AFL Grand Final It’s not often we get a local team in the grand final - but we were ready for it! The nail-biting game was shown in the Wet Bar and the Marina Bar and to the relief of most (we can’t say ‘all’), the Eagles were crowned hometown heroes and many a celebratory drink was poured!

Our Pirate theme Open day proved popular with a huge participation in the sail past - it was great to see so many power boats this year and a solid dinghy fleet to complement the keelboats! Kids were welcomed into our new playground, some completely transformed with face paint, while others enjoyed a quick pony ride around the Club!

Oktoberfest For the first time this Year we hosted an Oktoberfest event in the Wet Bar where we welcomed the general public as part of our ‘Discover Hillarys Yacht Club’ campaign. We were blessed with great weather and and over 300 people joined the festivites, drinking over 150 litres of German beer and consuming well over 200 Bratwurst hotdogs; I think we can all agree that it was a great success!

We had a great crowd at Melbourne Cup this year keeping the dance floor full well into the afternoon. The Chefs did a great job, serving up some new dishes and feedback on the day was very positive indeed. Thank you once again to our Tuesday Group volunteers for selling all the sweep stakes, to the Power Section for organising the raffle and to event sponsor, Living Colour for Hair, for donating our Best Dressed prize!

Classic Pub Anthems Landslide really know how to fill a dance floor! What a pleasure it was to have this great band back again, playing all your favourite Classic Pub Anthems! Whilst it wasn’t sold out this time, the atmosphere (and various oldschool “Rock“ t-shirts) made for a entertaining evening - matched only by some questionable dance moves in front of the band! If you haven’t been to one our live music events, you really are missing out... they are such a fun night out with friends for a very low ticket price! Stay tuned for the next one!

Know your skipper Cass Castalanelli first joined HYC in 1994 when he bought a Leeder 710, “Quality Time”, but his main involvement with HYC was after he got into diving in 1998. He mastered diving and became an instructor in 2003, Rear Commodore in 2001 then Vice Commodore before again becoming Rear Commodore for another 3 years. He continued to be very active in the dive section and had also been crewing on a few keel boats for club races and acquiring a taste for fish getting involved with the fishing competitions. After helping with the 2011 ISAF world championships he got a taste of sailing and formed a syndicate to purchase Seachange in 2014, which was purchased in Airlie Beach and sailed back to Perth. John Gregory’s interest in boats began at an early age. The family were 10 Pound Poms, arriving in Fremantle via the Suez Canal in 1952. His father had served as a radio operator in the British Merchant Navy during WWII, so in the late 50’s John was often dragged down to the Fremantle wharves to visit ships that his father had sailed on. The family eventually settled in what was then called “Mount Claremont”. Many a day was spent paddling around the wetlands in homemade canoes constructed from roofing iron and fruit packing crates. John hoped to one day own a boat and this came to fruition when he partnered with two friends to purchase their first 21’ power boat. After around 190 trips to Rotto, the partnership was eventually dissolved, and John and his friends went off to get married and have families. John returned to boating in 1997 when he purchased “Stardust” which was eventually sold due to costs and a lack of family interest. John was then boat free for several years until discussions with Cass - a friend from the Dive Section - resulted in them recruiting

Hugh and Darren in a partnership to consider purchasing a yacht, and the rest as they say, is history. Hugh Burton grew up in the suburbs of Perth after his parents emigrated from the UK when Hugh was nine. His father worked in the boat building industry in Perth which meant Hugh was always around power boats. Hugh’s father built him a 9-foot sailing dinghy when Hugh was 14 and although he never raced in his teens nor was a member of a club, Hugh spent many lazy days sailing the swan river. Hugh became a member of a syndicate in 2010 as part owner of a Beneteau Cyclades 393. The following year the syndicate competed in the Fremantle Bali Rally – The long ocean crossing brought out Hugh’s nemesis… seasickness. Unfortunately, the syndicate folded and Hugh decided to join Hillarys Yacht Club which is much closer to his home suburb of Iluka. Hugh competed as crew on Mark Pitt’s Mulberry for a few seasons before he decided to look for another syndicate. Hugh was just ready to sign into a new syndicate in Fremantle Sailing Club when Carol, his wife, telephoned him to say that there was an expression of interest for a syndicate at Hillarys Yacht Club…… Darren Shirdon grew up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches racing Manly Juniors, Flying Ants and 4 crew 16ft skiffs. The start of a flying career put sailing on hold for a while until an opportunity arose to crew on an iconic former Admirals Cup selection contender “Inch By Winch”. This led to a keen interest in offshore racing, competing in many CYCA Bluewater races along the East Coast. A move to wife Nicole’s home town of Perth in 2013 saw him then team up with Cass, John and Hugh to purchase “Seachange” (Delphia 40) on which he enjoys more relaxed racing, and coastal cruising with Nicole and their 3 children.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Our training participant numbers continue to grow with courses increasing in popularity. December Keel courses have sold out and, at this time of year when people are ready to get out on the water more, our Recreational Skippers Ticket courses have seen a surge in numbers. This year we are running a number of courses for youngsters throughout the school holidays, incorporating no less than five Learn-to-Sail courses from age seven and up between December and February and our ever popular Junior Fishing Clinic for 9 to 16 year olds in January. All our courses are available to book online, either for yourself or as a Christmas gift. Our increase in training courses over the year has led to more boats competing in our weekly races and the ability to create additional coaching opportunities for our up and coming sailors. In particular, congratulations must go to James Stewart (sailing a Laser Full Rig), Caitlin Shaw and Eleanor Wise (both sailing Laser Radial) who all made the Western Australian Sailing Squad (WASS) for 2018.

Western Australian Sailing Squad (WASS) The WASS program has been developed to assist and foster talented Western Australian sailors striving towards high performance pathways. The aim of the WASS program is to provide a foundation step for determined and talented club sailors to the WAIS squad and beyond. The program is pioneered by The Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) in collaboration with South of Perth Yacht Club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Fremantle Sailing Club, Hillarys Yacht Club, Royal Perth Sailing Club and Australian Sailing. WASS sailors are invited to weekly on water squad training sessions with their class specific coach. This targeted coaching provides the sailors with a program that is better tailored to each of their specific needs to fast track their learning and performances. This on water training is partnered with off water physical conditioning training with a focus on efficient and safe movement. These sessions programed and run by specialist WAIS young athlete trainer, Brock Fleay, aim to improve performance and more importantly, assist in injury prevention. WASS sailors will also receive ZHIK team uniform to proudly represent WA at events around the world. The qualification events for the WASS Youth Pathway and Olympic Pathway squads are the National Titles and Australian Youth National Titles (AYC) each year in January.

DIVE The Trip to Komodo Komodo? Oh, that place with the dragons? Where is that?’ So went the general response to the Dive Section overseas destination in October. Up to Bali turn right and fly for 75 minutes by turbo prop to the island of Flores. Komodo National Park lies in the Flores Sea to the west of the port of Labuan Bajo. Besides its famed giant reptiles, divers know the park for its warm water, drift diving and BIG fish. Eight divers and 3 non-diving partners headed off to our resort base on the beach of a quiet cove just outside the town. Each morning our day boat making the 90 minute run out to the dive sites with breakfast on the way. And a pattern quickly developed; dive, relax, eat and repeat three times daily, returning to port at the end of each day with the sun setting on still waters between numerous small islands. Day 1 brought an amazing treat when, barely had the photographers amongst us had a chance to check our settings, we found ourselves pressed to the sand as huge manta swept up from below. Our dive guide directed us to a spot on the opposite side of the slope from a large group of divers whose curtain of bubbles caused the 3m wide winged rays to turn and sweep directly over us at less that arm’s length only to then dive back to the deep before repeating the show. It’s hard to convey the connection of looking these giants in the eye from so close up. The highlight of day 2 was a swim along a sloping shelf around an island at about 20m deep until eventually the oncoming current made progress impossible so it was out with the reef hooks (think tent peg with a curve end and

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm cable attached to our BCD) to latch onto a convenient rock and then just float there to watch the display of numerous reef sharks darting back and forth just a few metres away. Day 3 and the non-divers joined us on the boat. They had the opportunity in the morning to snorkel and watch from the surface as the divers, in clear 20 metres of water below, found a coral garden littered with sleeping turtles. Debatable if these creatures are the most photogenic of the ocean but certainly the easiest to photograph. It was difficult to know if they were even aware we were there. In the afternoon the boat dropped us on the island of Rinca, the neighbour of Komodo Island and the home of the visitor centre where you can get up close with the dragons. Any doubts as to the danger these lizards pose was dispelled by the need for 3 guides/guards to accompany our group of less than 20 and each armed with a long pole should the need arise! Renowned for their deadly saliva and capacity to track their prey after biting it until eventually succumbing to the poison, this was not a creature to start thinking ‘quokkaselfie’ with! The stand-out moment on the 3 dives of Day 4 was Crystal Rock. This tiny rock was above the water and below was a wall of coral and a myriad of fish. Hovering out in the current as if hanging by a thread: a Spotted Eagle Ray. With a 2m wing span it maintained a steady position whilst its food came towards it in the strong current. Day 5 The last morning of diving brought us to a small island and the briefing explained that once we dropped in a current would pick us up and carry us along the reef and around the island. Something lost in translation was the strength of the current! What followed was an exhilarating 20 plus minutes where all you could do was concentrate

on not getting pulled out ‘into the blue’ of deeper water and even stronger current. Impossible to swim against you could just kick hard enough to slow yourself down to ensure you stayed in contact with the rest of the group. At the end of the dive was the reward of schooling Giant Trevally and Barracuda. Surfacing, we found we had circumnavigated three quarters of the island! Diving over and one day of relaxation by the resort pool to allow our ‘no-fly time’ to count down and dry equipment before the trip home and to start culling the near 900 photos shot down to the good ones!  Jon Tomkins

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7.00pm 15 Dec: Xmas Family Fun Day

With the Summer series underway and the weather warming up, it’s worth a look back to our sailors’ achievements in the last few months. September saw us join the world sailing in support of Bart’s Bash, and conduct another successful Free Tackers event in Hillarys Boat Harbour. A record number of HYC sailors were invited to WestSail 2018 at RFBYC: An elite four day training camp involving fitness, theory and on water training, conducted by top level coaches. Many backed it up with the WA State Youth Championships. Congratulations to Bryce for his 4th position and to Mitch, Aiden and Alicia for their first States in the Laser 4.7. In Optimists, HYC was represented by Ben, Sam and Bradley in the Open fleet, and Maxime, Oliver, Bindy, Zen, Jasper and Charlie in Intermediate. Our section was proud to participate in the HYC Opening day festivities. The Dinghy sailpast was appreciated by the onlookers, and our morning race allowed some of our sailors to crew on Keelboats for the Commodore’s Cup. Sail Freo allowed our sailors to stretch themselves in some fairly hectic conditions in October. Bryce and Aiden again stood up in Laser 4.7. Sam, Bradley, Maxime, Jasper, Oliver, Zen, and Charlie all learned something about perseverance and determination on the Optimist race course.

Extra training has already boosted our Optimist squad, with a 2nd place in the recent Teams racing event held on the river at RFBYC. Family Fun Day is December 15. UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

Bart’s Bash Sailors at 640 venues in 86 countries numbered close to four thousand as once again they competed in Bart’s Bash, the largest global simultaneous yacht race. In contrast to the winter races, brilliant sunshine and a ten knot westerly was ideal for the combined start of keelboats and various classes of dinghies. Twenty eight yachts competed at Hillarys with success for Chris Kelly and crew on HYC Training in the keelboats.

Opening Day and Commodore’s Cup Newly elected Mayor of the City of Joondalup and Patron, Albert Jacob opened the new season for HYC with the traditional sail-past and Commodore’s Cup races. Best dressed boat was shared by Sheer Magic for sail and Shore Shot for power. Several yachts from ORSSC joined in and the division one fleet swelled to 16 yachts and the total fleet was 31. Whispering Jack continued on her winning way with Chelsea Bradford at the helm. There was success for Alan Peacham skippering Feelin Free in division two and Steve Okeefe on Comfortably Numb in division three.

Fremantle Ocean Races One of the largest fleets (18) in recent years turned out for the weekend’s racing. The hospitality of the RPYC annex (thank you Clem) and an entertaining quiz night (thank you Greg) has made this weekend a highlight of the season. Surfer Rosa set fastest time both ways in division one and was first going to Fremantle whilst Sally Malay won coming back. In division two Helga had a win as did Sheer Magic, whilst fastest times were shared between Covert Operation and Goldie. Deckchairs Overboard set fastest time each way in division three and Comfortably Numb and Anastasia each had a win.

North Coast Series On Day 1 of the NCS eighteen yachts from ORSSC and HYC resumed the friendly rivalry in two short course races with two divisions. Best for ORSSC in division one were Hot Gossip and Leda whilst for HYC it was Lamotrek and Whispering Jack. In division two Petite Bateau and Feelin Free were best for ORSSC and Volant and Blue Chip for HYC.

Good performances on Day 2 from Blue Chip, Volant, Bad Habits, Hard Evidence and Perle reduced the overall lead of Ocean Reef to just five points.

Consistency Series Finally Underway A very strong sea breeze may have kept some yachts in their pens and caused four retirements however Surfer Rosa went like a rocket to score first and fastest in division one. Mark Taylor skippered Helga into first place in division two and also the Viking Cup. Deckchairs Overboard competed in division three for a first and fastest whilst Rob James sailed De la Mer into second place and newcomer Echo (Tony Hanavan) was third.

Fremantle to Geraldton and Return Offshore The 50th Geraldton Ocean Classic lived up to its reputation as a tough race with a strong nor-westerly breeze greeting the starters off the north mole and if that wasn’t enough, the return journey was against an even stronger southerly. A fleet of ten racing yachts including Kraken, Lithium, Mulberry and Perle from HYC and four rally boats competed in this iconic race. Michael Giles on Endorphin arrived in Geraldton after 26hrs 49min for fastest time in division one and in division two Wayne Pitcher on Lithium was ahead of Kraken by 5 mins in 28hrs 59 min. On corrected time for YAH Shiraz 111 (Edrick Delfos) from Geraldton was first, Perle second followed by Lithium, Mulberry and Kraken. On IRC the result was pretty much reversed with Todd Giraudo on Kraken first, then Lithium, Mulberry and Perle. The hospitality of the Geraldton Yacht Club was outstanding and after a recovery day it was time for the Lobster Pot Series of five races. Mark Pitt’s consistency on

Mulberry was rewarded with third place on IRC, the best for HYC. Daily rehydration took place at several watering holes. The 50th Anniversary Dinner honoured past and present sailors including Kim Swarbrick who sailed in the first and the 50th Geraldton races and Chris Kelly who also sailed in the first Geraldton race (and 30 more). With a forecast of strong southerlies not all yachts headed to the start-line for the return race to Fremantle. The first night was the worst as yachts tacked back and forth making their way slowly down the coast. It was up each wave and a bone-jarring slam down the other side. Argo set fastest time of 41hrs 23mins to be first on YAH and IRC in division one. In division two Kraken was first and fastest on IRC and YAH in

45hrs 46mins followed by Lithium, Mulberry and Perle. At the Presentation Night Dinner at SoPYC Perle received the Cook’s prize for last boat home, the Navigator’s prize for best estimated time of arrival in Fremantle and third prize in the Batavia Coast Series (up, Lobster Pot and return) YAH. Accolades to Kraken who was second to Argo on IRC in the Batavia Coast Series and first overall for the Combined Geraldton and Return races in division two, followed by Lithium, Mulberry and Perle. UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm 15/16 Dec: Stark Bay & Return

Mandurah By Land On a Sunday late in August, eleven members of the Cruising in Company group participated on a land based cruise to Mandurah. We all met at the Greenwood Train station at 9am and boarded the southbound train for Mandurah . About 80 minutes of travel found us all standing on the Mandurah Train Station to transfer onto a new Transperth bus headed for the Tourist Information Center on the Boardwalk in central Mandurah. It was here we were greeted by Michael McGee, our volunteer Heritage Tour Guide for the day. Michael is a passionate individual, with a fantastic knowledge of the early history of Mandurah which he shared with us as we progressed on the tour. He explained the early development of the region, the life and times of the pioneers linking the development of Mandurah over the intervening years up to the present day. We ended up at the Mandurah Museum where some members went off to explore the boatshed and its collection of restored vessels and the others explored the Museum and its collection of fantastic exhibits and historical artefacts about the Mandurah region. Before we knew it, it was midday and we had to leave the Museum for our lunch appointment at the Brighton Hotel. A delightful meal was enjoyed by all, with the odd beverage to lubricate the throat as we chatted about the informative morning. We gathered ourselves and headed towards the bus stop, catching the bus to the Mandurah train station for the journey back to Greenwood. We all agreed it was a very enjoyable day along with the lovely weather!

Longreach Cruise On Saturday 4th November, two yachts - Banco and Sailfar - left Hillarys in the morning and set sail for Rottnest Island. The sea conditions were comfortable with a low rolling swell and smooth sea however the wind was from the south-west so it was a slow trip to the Centaur Mark. From there, the two yachts headed towards Rotto, still sailing close to the wind. They made their way until positioned north west of Longreach Bay , tacked onto a easy reach arriving in the bay early afternoon . Once the mooring buoys were secured and the yachts settled down, an odd beverage was enjoyed with conversation about the day’s sail. A few other motor launches came into the bay and the afternoon slipped by without event. A pleasant night was had

on both yachts and the crews retired to their bunks. Overnight, the weather conditions improved in that the sea flattened slightly but the wind stayed in the south west. Breakfast was enjoyed, washed down with warm coffee and the skippers decided to cast off the mooring and head out of Longreach Bay, north east back to Hillarys. The trip home was much easier than the day before, running before the wind and arriving back in the Hillarys pen in a pleasant two and a half hours. Another pleasant cruise with great company and reasonable weather conditions. Unfortunately the cameras did not get used but great memories remain.  Rex Fredericks

ANGLING Welcome to the last Angling report for 2018. This year was a big improvement on 2017 with more anglers fishing and a lot more good fish caught which shows that the Fisheries and anglers must be doing something right! HYC Anglers were successful in the AAA and Harbour Classic making 2018 even more successful than 2017 in all the external fishing competitions. We’ve provided abbreviated results in this article, but you can find full results from all competitions on the Angling page of the Hillarys Yacht Club website.

Team Fish Competition Every year HYC endeavours to bring fun and comradery into fishing with a Team Fish event where teams are made up of all ages and genders with some great prizes donated by the Club. This year was no exception with 24 anglers forming six teams of fierce competitors. The weather conditions were good and some nice Dhu fish and Snapper were caught. Congratulations to The Old Sea Dogs who were overall winners with The Geordies in second place. All anglers with the largest species received prizes and The Geordies won the heaviest bag prize thanks to Ross Elliott’s magnificent Dhu fish. Fish of the competition was a 9.02kg Dhu fish caught by Ross although Denis Loran’s 3.5kg Snapper was a beauty!

September Boat Competition 14 Anglers took part in the September fishing competition with 11 men, two ladies and one junior. With good conditions, everyone caught their fair share of fish with the Fish of the Competition being Allan McDiarmid’s (our Men’s winner) 0.74kg King George and Ruby’s (Ladies winner) 0.74kg Skippy. Congratulations also to Renan Pascucci , our Junior winner and Greg Mansell who won the $100 Lucky Angler prize.

October Boating Competition The weather for the October boating competition was the best it has been in a long time and 25 anglers took part 21 Men, 3 Ladies and 1 Junior in perfect sea conditions. Ian McCall and Julie Loran won Men’s & Ladies, respectively, with Sam Cunningham taking the Junior’s title. The total species caught was 11 and the Fish of the Competition went to Frank Pierucci for a whopping 1.312kg King George Whiting - just missing out on a club record. Well done to Ian and Julie who were off to a great start for the new fishing competition year! The $100 Lucky Angler prize was won by Frank Antulov.

November Beach Competition

September Junior Fishing Clinic 10 kids took part in the 3 day fishing clinic which comprises knot tying, beach casting and fishing on the club boat, with a species competition on last day with lots of prizes followed by a BBQ. Many fish were caught from a combination of six species: Flathead, Goat Fish, Herring, Skippy, King George Whiting and Sand Whiting with most kids catching three species. With the same number of points allocated as species, the overall winner was Bailey Cripps with the heaviest bag, second Michell Bartucciotto and third George Kay. Fish of the clinic went to Bailey for his 1.59kg Flathead and Mitchell’s 1.18kg King George Whiting.

September Beach Fishing Comp. The last beach comp of the year took place in ordinary conditions and seven men and three lady anglers took part. The fish were not playing ball that weekend with very few fish caught and all the weed on the beaches didn’t help the fishing! Ron Thornton was our winner, with Ron Malek in second place. None of the ladies weighed in a fish.

The beach competition saw only 5 anglers: 4 men and 1 lady fish and very few fish were caught. Bryan Noris won with 3 species totalling 30.06 points (bag weight 1.06kg) and no other fish were weighed in. The next beach competition will be held at Busselton on the first weekend in February 2019. Everyone is welcome to enter this two day competition so let’s hope we get a good turn out and the weather gods will be kind!

November Fishing Competition 15 anglers took part in the penultimate fishing competition of the year in average conditions with 12 men and 3 ladies (no juniors). The overall Men’s winner was Bryan Noris and the ladies winner was Julie Loran. Eight species were caught overall and the fish of the round was Bryan Noris’s 0.69kg Flathead with Peter McGrady winning the Lucky Angler $100 prize draw.

HYC Angling Presentation Night HYC Angling held their presentation night in October and everyone had a great time with excellent food, games and great fun. Some results were very close in the men’s boating as most anglers fished all of the comps for the year. There was only six points separating second, third and fourth places, however the overall winner, Allan McDiarmid, excelled in the Boat section winning by 177 points from second place Ian McCall with Greg Mansell third. In the ladies section, Ruby McGrady dominated again winning by 189 points with Julie Loran second and Annette Kirwan third. In the juniors section Ashley McDiarmid won by a massive 169 points with Renan Pascucci (who only recently joined the angling section) second with Sophia O’Kane third and the mini junior was won by Oscar Lihou. Can you don a lifejacket, gather your flares and EPIRB then make a radio call in under 30 seconds? In an emergency on the water, 30 seconds could be all the time skippers and passengers have to gather and fit lifesaving equipment and to notify response agencies. Your Marina Facilities Committee (MFC) urges our members going out on the water to consider the 30 Second Challenge, an initiative of the Department of Transport. The Department of Transport (DOT) wants those heading out on the water this summer to be prepared and is advocating skippers and passengers take the “30 Second Challenge” to test their readiness for an emergency on board a vessel. DOT Manager of Safety Education, Laurie Adams, said that safety gear needs to be well maintained and easily accessible if it is to be useful in an emergency. There were 13 recreational boating fatalities recorded in WA in the 2016/17 financial year, a record high and triple the recent annual average of four deaths.

This initiative - that tests if people can gather flares, EPIRB, make a radio call and don a lifejacket in 30 seconds - responds to the detailed analysis of incident data which showed that better maintenance of safety gear and improved accessibility could have limited the number of tragedies last year. Are all your crew and passengers familiar with where all lifesaving equipment is stowed? To assist, consider the use of a stowage plan that can be referred to by them when the skipper is occupied. A brief on where equipment is stowed prior to departure is also highly recommended, along with routine inspections of all safety equipment at the start and end of the boating season. In the lead up to the boating season, the MFC recommends that skippers and those who go boating take the challenge and test their readiness for an emergency. Hopefully, people who do so will learn from the exercise and make changes if required. The importance of safety gear can never be overstated. Tragically eight of the 13 deaths in WA waters last year may have been prevented if the persons had been wearing a lifejacket when they entered the water. Skippers are urged to be prepared and take the 30 Second Challenge.  Rod Sweet

Opening day was a great success for the whole club and it was good to see so many powerboats partaking in the sail past. Congratulations to Peter Roberts, who’s boat Shore Shot won the Best Dressed prize for powerboats!

Melbourne Cup Raffle The Power section was again pleased to offer the Moet Melbourne Cup raffle with some very happy winners! (The fourth was not a prize winner but certainly looked cute in his borrowed yellow hat...)

Twilight Cruise The twilight cruise unfortunately had to be cancelled due to inclement weather but a great time was still had by over 100 people in the Wet Bar for our Pig-on-a-Spit BBQ! Many thanks to Graham for organising the pig and providing the spit, and a huge well done to Chef Damo and his crew for providing so many delicious meals. Our big raffle was drawn on the night and was won by Jane Wann. Many thanks to all who donated prizes to make the raffle very successful.
