COMMODORE’S REPORT The last four months has gone so quickly, it just seems summer was yesterday and now its winter. But this year we were spoilt with a great autumn, especially in May where we enjoyed plenty of mid-20 degree days and light breezes. It was great to see so many empty pens in the marina over the weekends. From Feburary through to May, the Club was jam packed full of activities and events and a massive thanks, as always, goes to the wonderful fleet of volunteers that are always ready and able to assist in any event we run at HYC, greatly appreciated by all.
Angling The Angling Section are always busy conducting events, whether it be mid-week or on the weekends, but their marquee event is the Harbour Classic Fishing Competition which was held on Saturday 7 April. With $22,000 in prizes up for grabs, we had 170 entries in the event and once again it promoted HYC as a strong angling club. Big thanks to Danny, Garry and the Angling Section for pulling it all together to make a very successful event.
The Sun rises on the 2017 Harbour Classic
Once again, the Rottnest Run was on in April and saw a large contingent of sail and power boats roll up at Rotto for the weekend. We booked the marquee at the Rottnest Hotel and all sections enjoyed the hospitality of our sponsors PK Construction, Ramsay Air Conditioning, Daikin and Peard Real Estate.
Sailing On the sailing side, Kraken completed the Melbourne to Osaka double-handed event and finished a magnificent 2nd on IRC Overall - a truly outstanding feat and great result! Congratulations to Todd Giraudo and Dubbo White... I wonder what’s next for these two! As mentioned previously, Kevin Farebrother from HYC will be competing in the 2018 Golden Globe Race - a solo, round the world yacht race that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the original event. The races starts on 1 July and the 19 boats competing will sail 30,000 miles alone with no outside assistance. We wish Kevin a safe and fast journey and look forward to hearing his story upon his return. HYC also conducted its first Sail Easter Regatta which was hailed a great success and a very solid platform to grow the
Power The Power Section continue to drive new initiatives to promote the section and the Twilight Cruise, organised for 24 March, was highly successful with 70 people enjoying a great spit roast at the Club. Unfortunately the weather was not conducive to a cruise but this didn’t dampen the spirits of the attendees who had a great night - with some kicking on until the wee hours of Sunday morning! event in future years. 60 boats attended and the event was supported by many volunteers which contributed to an efficient and well run event. The sailing season has now drawn to a close with the HYC Keelboat Club Champion 2017/18 being Covert Operation, skippered by Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson. The presentation of that trophy, plus many others, was in front of 150 members at the Keelboat Presentation evening on 19 May.

Training Our Training & Development division, headed by Chris Kelly, engaged 980 participants through various courses and events in the last 12 months - a truly great effort, and one that ranked HYC second on the WA training scoreboard.
Social We have some wonderful social events coming up in the next couple of months such as the Commodore’s Ball on Saturday 23 June and the Eagles & Fleetwood Mac tribute show on 14 July. Hopefully we will see you at these events and don’t forget the AGM: Sunday 12 August at 10am. See you around the Club or on the water. Neil Harrison

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Summer Season Over Summer and the boating season have concluded with our Sections holding their presentation dinners and events. Congratulations to all those active participants and volunteers who have received recognition and awards. Along with the end of season is the end of our financial year. The operations of the Club have continued and produced a positive end of year result. Auditing is currently underway with an expectation of a small surplus near $50K above the previous year. Given the tightened economy and reduced revenues and spending, this positive result has been achieved mainly through cost control and reduction of expenses.
HYC Marina Clean Up On behalf of the Club, I would like to thank all those volunteers who assisted and actively took part in cleaning our marina, both on shore and underwater. In conjunction with the nationwide initiative, Clean Up Australia, and the whole of Hillarys Harbour, 13 of our dive section members dressed up in their wetsuits and combed their way through our jetty system filling their catch bags. Another 50 volunteers, some monitoring diver safety from rescue boats and the jetties, others collecting and transferring the raised items for sorting were also involved.
6 Compass June 2018 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc
The land based volunteers also worked their way along the rock walls and fenceline. We recovered over 8m3 of rubbish, separated and catagorised into recyclables and general rubbish including glass bottles, cutlery, deck chairs, a variety of plastics, fishing rods, lines, clothing, tyres, propellers, rusted out craypots, anchor chains, cans and other items, which of course included rusted old frames of wheel barrows and trolleys. It was a good day for the Club and a job well done helping our the environment and our own backyard.
HYC Golf Day The next day, 21 of our members took part in our inaugural golf day at Joondalup Country Club. The weather was a little cooler, helping out the golfers and battlers taking part. Members and partners, from varied sections of the Club, did their best enjoying the beautiful course and grounds including, of course, the 19th hole for refreshment and relaxation. There were some good scores and there were some not so good scores returned at the end of the day. Peter Carstens produced the best score and received the inaugural trophy. As is usual at most social golf events, there is the not-sowanted NAGA award, which was reluctantly accepted by Terry O’Grady. Thank you to those who took part. It is hoped we will have more members and tee off opportunities next year so the event can grow and be another great social event for the Club and members. Kraken Tales
The fleet get underway from Melbourne
Two men, one boat, four boxes of rum and an epic race to Japan.
Sailing Kraken, a Sunfast 3600, 36ft long yacht, in last year’s Fremantle to Bali race would have been enough of a sailing achievement in anyone’s book, but for Skipper Todd Giraudo and David “Dubbo” White, this was just the training ground for a much bigger feat. The Osaka Cup - a 5,500 nautical mile two-handed yacht race starting in Melbourne – is one of the few South-North long distance ocean races in the world. The race passes through multiple weather systems and seasons as it crosses the Pacific Ocean. There is no set course. First held in 1987, the race provides a challenging long-distance, short-handed racing event traversing the Pacific Ocean every five years.
Preparations For Todd & Dubbo, preparation for The Osaka Cup started over two years ago. In Todd’s words “for any race, preparation is key, particularly for long races. I believe that about 80% of the race outcome is decided before you start. I spent a lot of time and money to ensure everything works: suitable sail wardrobe, provisions and communications, with as little as possible left to chance.” “Our preparation for this race “Sailing the boat commenced not long after our is the easy part, nomination over two years ago. This included: 250nm Cape Naturaliste race and the most – lithium batteries; 1440 nm Fremantle rewarding.” to Bali race – watermakers, sat comms; 1700nm delivery Fremantle to Melbourne; 440nm Westcoaster and return delivery.”
The Race Itself Most competitors agree just getting to the start line is an achievement in itself, and to finish is to win. Gale force winds in the Bass Strait delayed the start of the race by a day but soon the yachts were headed up the east coast of Australia, crossing the East Australian current, through the Solomon Islands and the doldrums of the equator. The course then heads into the north-easterly trade winds and the equatorial current before fighting the Kuroshio Current, which flows up the Pacific Coast of Japan. The race finishes
8 Compass June 2018 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc
in the port of Osaka on Japan’s Honshu Island. The East Australian Current pushes warm water all the way down the NSW coast. Living in just boxer shorts for most days, it was too hot to sleep below deck during the day, and too hot in the sun to stay up top. The newly installed fans became essential to seek refuge below deck. The Kuroshio Current begins on the east coast of the Philippines and Taiwan then flows north east up the coast of Japan and dissipates into the Northern Pacific. This is a warm 24°C current and is approximately 100nm wide with the main 50nm portion running at 3 knots. Kraken experienced 6 knots of cross current, which is sufficient to flatten out the sea even with 20 knots of breeze. Thankfully, Kraken had good winds to cross the current and avoided doing more miles north east that would be inevitable in lighter conditions. “The Solomon Sea “The sailing is dominated sucked. Very hot and by hot conditions and light winds” says Todd, on one day we did only “supposedly there are meant 34nm for the entire day” to be trade winds abeam in both the northern and southern hemispheres, but I think the brochure needs correcting: Every four or five days we seemed to stop for half a day, or more, just waiting for a breeze. Even in the last week out of Osaka we parked up for the best part of an entire day!” Competing against two other Sunfast 3600s, a Red Jacket, a Radford 40 (which was at HYC for many years), an Elektra Beneteau 47.7, a Surf Dude Felci 45 and a Force Eleven Adams 11.9 made for good, close racing with six of these seven yachts finishing within the same afternoon and night, which also meant an extended arrival party!
The Finish Line Todd and Dubbo sailed Kraken into second place on IRC standings, third on AMS and third on PHS on the afternoon of 3 May 2018. “We were relieved and excited to cross the finish line” recalls Todd, “We had a gale of 40-45 knots through Yureseto and were down to just the No 4 jib. The weather cleared and lightened and we had a following

Well, revelations are not required here. Completing the equivalent of eight back-to-back Sydney to Hobart races is an enormous achievement for two people sailing such a small boat. And as Todd and Dubbo now relax and sip rum under a shady tree somewhere, we can only imagine what challenge they will dream up next. In fact, they’re probably already halfway there…

Getting Started Starting at the age of 10, sailing has been a big part of my life for over 9 years now. I wasn’t a big fan of sailing when I first started, and it wasn’t until I could complete a race that my competitive side won over. I started on a racing skills course because my dad was adamant that I do the first course possible after moving from South Africa. This had its challenges and I always remember being cold and not enjoying myself. Nonetheless I continued to come down and on my third race day after not coming last, I knew I had found my sport. On my 12th birthday my parents bought Swamp Rat, an Optimist that is still sailing at the club today. It was in this boat that I won the silver fleet state championships which really got me excited about sailing.
Getting Competitive I was always very competitive as a kid and sailing was a perfect way to use this. For the first six years I loved sailing because I was constantly improving and getting better positions. However, my last year of school meant I didn’t have as much time and I essentially stopped competitively sailing for a year. Upon returning I was very disappointed with my results as I was being beaten by sailors who had never beaten me before. This put a further halt on my sailing. So instead I tried to focus on university and I would ride my bike as much as I could. Over the course of a year, my fitness improved and in November 2016 I decided to start sailing again. I trained hard with the 5,4,3,2,1 exercise which involves sailing on one tack for 5 minutes and on the other for 4 minutes and so on. It is used to increase leg strength and endurance and after spending so much time on my bike, I was quite good at this. After doing a few of these exercises I didn’t want to do anything else. There was something about the leg pain that I loved and the 5,4,3,2,1 is an overwhelming reason as to why I still sail.
Instructing Instructing is very similar to sailing. The true test of a skipper is to see how calm and logical he/she remains when everything else has turned to chaos - may it be ropes stuck in the propeller, boats stuck on the rocks, capsized boats or yelling kids. It is these situations I most enjoy about instructing because it is all about solving problems and improvising. Since I was 11, I have volunteered at the Learn to Sail courses at HYC and it was always the highlight of my school holidays. When I turned 16, I completed the coaching course which allowed me to take on further responsibility in the Club. I have always enjoyed finding the best way to teach. I try to remember what it was like to start sailing and it helps me to motivate the kids.
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
2018 National Championships My preparation for the Queensland Nationals wasn’t very well rounded as the 5,4,3,2,1 was the only drill I wanted to do! This meant my light wind skills were lacking and little focus was spent on downwinds or tactics. Luckily, the regatta was windy and all I had to do was get the legs working and sail fast. This turned out well for me as I came 9th overall, being my best result to date. The greatest moment was on the second day where the winds were 20+ knots. It was the last upwind of the day, so I was very tired, in 8th place and the gap behind was big enough that I could afford to take it easy. The sailor in 7th was two boat lengths ahead and tacked into a position that disadvantaged me. In frustration, I decided to push myself to the limit to overtake him and ended up in 6th place at the top mark. I lost both places on the downwind, but it still sticks as the best moment. I learnt that a top spot is possible but to improve I will have to work on my tactics and downwinds so that I can still compete at a high level.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT HYC Emergency Plans Our current Club Emergency plans were updated in February and are in current operation. The plans are divided into two main sections – one for Clubhouse emergencies and one for on-water activities at HYC – and include all procedures and contact details required in an emergency situation. To have these documents is standard across the Clubs industry and schools and other organisations require us to have these available. Of course for our own risk management, it is vital that we review and update these procedures regularly and we encourage all members to be aware of the details. The plans are available from Club Reception or from our radio tower.
State Womens Championships This regatta was sailed on Saturday May 19 and hosted by RFBYC. Sarah Lidiard skippered the enthusiastic HYC team of 10 ladies who have not had the same experiences as the river crews sailing on the river courses. Given the interest shown by new sailors for this format, in particular how the other clubs train and prepare for this competition, we hope to be able to provide more support in the future for our crews to broaden their experience.
Dinghy Winter Training Attention has now turned to preparing for next season. We have recently had more boats apply for storage to assist in our consistent growth in the Dinghy section. Thursday Training is in recess in June and July due to the light and inconsistent weather. We will train on Saturdays when weather and time allows. Squads are being formed for those intending to represent HYC at the forthcoming Nationals in Tasmania. DT 1236 90x60.qxp_Layout 1 21/11/2016 9:07 am Page 1

UPCOMING EVENTS
DIVE
Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm
FREMANTLE SAILING CLUB PHOTO COMPETITION At our annual dive presentation dinner last year, Anita Wyntje - Rear Commodore of the Fremantle Sailing Club (FSC) Dive Section, was so impressed with the standard of some of the images she saw on the night, she invited HYC divers to participate in one of the categories in the annual FSC dive photo competition. HYC divers gladly entered the Underwater Portfolio section. Entrants had to submit five photos based on the theme of Rottnest Island. The photos had to be taken wholly or partly underwater, between 31 March 2017 and 31 March 2018. With some near perfect ocean conditions, Balaton Jack has done a fair few trips to Rottnest Island this dive season. On some dives it was difficult to take a bad photograph with crystal clear water, shafts of light streaming into underwater cave systems, and an abundance of wildlife! The dives this year (in my opinion) have been some of the best I have done in and around Rottnest in the eight years I have been diving. We have made several visits to Crystal Palace, Shark Cave and the West End, which in the past have been undivable due to big swells and strong currents. Jon Tomkins informed me he was going to enter the FSC competition, and that he was entering a collection of ‘Rottnest Caves’ shots. I decided to give it a go too and submitted a variety of marine life calling it ‘Creatures Great and Small’. With nothing to lose, we both entered! The competition was held on FSC’s open day, and a whole room was dedicated to the photography competition. The walls were adorned with the photographs of contestants that had been lucky enough to be shortlisted. The white framed photographs looked very professional and were for sale after the competition, with the proceeds going to charity. Jon and I eagerly awaited the judge’s decision. The standard was very high. When the winners were announced in reverse order, I was surprised and delighted to get third place. With his stunning Cave photographs, Jon got a very well deserved 1st place….. …a big well done to you, Jon. HYC divers can hold their heads high again! Needless to say, we all went for a celebratory drink afterwards in the very impressive FSC bar. Someone once asked me if I ever felt like I missed out on the dive when I was taking photographs. I was quick to respond, “I actually think I see more”. Photography is a great way of remembering the dive, recording the sea life seen on a dive, and a great way to get to know the names of different species. As anyone that has done underwater photography knows: it is a challenge even in the best of conditions, however I would recommend anyone to give it a try. It can be very rewarding, in more ways than one! June Sullivan

DINGHY
Our major Dinghy sailing event for the year was the very successful inaugural Sail Easter Regatta which was the biggest multi-class regatta ever conducted at HYC and it promises to be bigger next year. Thank you again to the many volunteers and HYC staff who made it all possible. Our Summer Series races held on each Saturday has continued to provide an enjoyable experience and concluded in mid April. The last race day was the Little Island Race which has a handicap start from our launching ramp. The slower boats started first, followed by faster boats progressively starting to sail the course out to Little Island and returning to finish at the Club Tower on the north seawall. There were plenty of challenges including a wind increase instead of the forecasted gradually lighter breeze, to help the more experienced and faster boats create a relatively close finish. On our Volunteers’ Day in April, the usual race day volunteers tried their hand at sailing and the sailors tried their hand at race management to again provide a fun and rewarding experience. The Thursday morning sailing activity for adults which commenced in early February has been well received and is helping to get new people learning to sail in Dinghies. It will continue while it is suitable weather. During the next few months, Dinghy sailors and supporters can be involved in our Winter Series race days which commence on 16 June. Training and practice activities will continue throughout the winter to provide continued skills development and the opportunity to catch up with sailing friends. During September we have a Pre-Season Cocktail Party with the Keelboat and Cruising sections. Also, our Dinghies and the Keelboats can take part in Hillarys part of Bart’s Bash which is the World’s biggest sailing event. All these activities will help prepare us for our weekly Summer Series race days which commence in October. Remember that sailing is a sport for life, and everyone is welcome to be a part of it. Sail Easter Coaching Regatta a winner all round The Dinghy Division’s inaugural Sail Easter Coaching Regatta has proven a resounding success with 64 registered entries across eight classes and more than 90 competitors hitting the water over the three-day event. Held in one to one and a half metre seas and winds ranging from 5 to 25 knots, the three-day event proved to be the Club’s largest and most successful dinghy sailing regatta to date. “It was fantastic to see so many boats and sailors of all ages competing in the top-shelf conditions between the marina and Little Island,” said Club Commodore Neil Harrison. Commencing on Good Friday, the regatta gave competitors a taste of all conditions including a blow-out on Saturday afternoon when wind and wave conditions became a little too boisterous for safe sailing. Participating classes and divisions included Optimist bronze, silver and gold; Laser 4.7, radial and standard; Mirror; 125; Tasar; 29er; 420 and BIC. Regatta organisation and management was led by Greg Jennings with support from a small committee comprising Marshall Fox, Chris Kelly, John Porter and Des Riley. But, says Greg, the event could not have happened or succeeded without the support from Club staff along with the indefatigable army of volunteers who helped out on all three days.
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
“There are far too many to name individually so I say a very big thank you on behalf of the organising committee to all of those who helped out laying courses, coaching, driving rescue boats, helping on the ramp, marshalling in the carpark and working in the clubhouse. A highlight of the regatta was the coaching support provided by 420 Olympic gold medalist and WA Institute of Sport head sailing coach Belinda Stowell and fellow coach Ryan Palk who helped sailors on all three days, as well as Dennis Jones, Chris Kelly and Chelsea Bradford. Further highlights included the attendance of the Open Bic Worlds team and the decision by the Optimist Association to make the event a ranking regatta. “Planning for the 2019 regatta has already begun and in light of the experience and interest shown this year and the state and national media coverage, we are very confident it will be even bigger and better,” said Greg. “The feedback from this year’s regatta was fantastic with 90 percent of sailors giving the regatta a positive satisfaction rating.” Des Riley

KEELBOAT RACING
UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm Winter Race Dates (Sundays): 17 June
North Coast Series Showdown The sailors from Hillarys took a narrow lead into the final day’s racing and with very little wind it looked as though that’s where the result stood. The start team patiently waited for the fluky, light southerly to fill in and after three attempts, racing was underway. Two races were completed and Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club clawed back some ground through the good performances of the Etchells Leda and Stump Jumper together with Hot Gossip and Feelin Free. Pennant winners for Hillarys were Hard Evidence, Quicksilver, Sheer Magic and Volant in race one, with Blue Chip and Catabatic adding to the list in race two. Despite Ocean Reef winning the day, Hillarys prevailed for a season result of 628 to 635, thus regaining the trophy Ocean Reef won in season 2016/17. The top yacht in division one was Hard Evidence (Des Riley and Marshall Fox) whilst in division two it was Catabatic (Rob Bills).
Hillarys to Rottnest and Return races Sailed in light and variable winds from the south, the skippers’ skills and patience were tested in the Rottnest races. In division one, first over the line going to Rottnest was Roric Smith sailing the very fast Pogo 12.5 Surfer Rosa however was second on handicap to Sandrine with Lamotrek third. Covert Operation was first and fastest in division two with Blue Chip second and Helga third. In division three Comfortably Numb was first over the line and second on handicap to Pandora with Sensei third. The return race to Hillarys began in a light easterly before it turned to the south and strengthened providing a spinnaker run home. John Akers on Lamotrek improved on his third placing, getting the win over Bill Gilbert on Jack Tar
29 July
1 July 5 Aug with new owners Scott Eiszle and 15 July 19 Aug Neil Ireland, third on Dart Vader. Mulberry was fastest. In division two the HYC Youth Squad sailing Xtreme showed they could concentrate for four hours winning ahead of Helga and the fastest yacht Covert Operation. In division three, as the only two starters, the results for Pandora and Comfortably Numb were a repeat of Saturday’s race.
Mindarie Races were Nail-biters After a morning and afternoon’s racing to and from Mindarie, the results came down to seconds to separate placegetters. A south-easterly that waxed and waned sent the yachts on their way north with spinnakers flying for a quick run to Mindarie. In division one Lamotrek picked the shifts best and was first, with Sandrine second and Mulberry, although setting fastest time was third, only two seconds in arrears. Covert Operation set fastest time in division two and was third behind Helga and the winner Tony Brooke skippering Tropical Itch. In division three Rob Giraudo on Pandora was first with Sheer Magic second and Sensei third. Comfortably Numb was fastest. During lunch the wind shifted to the south-west and picked up to 13 knots making it a long beat back to Hillarys. All yachts had a good look at the stern of Seachange as they cleared out to record a first and fastest in division one. Second was Sandrine with Hard Evidence third. In division two Alan Peacham was feeling good after a win in Feelin Free with Tropical Itch second and Panache third just one second ahead of Covert Operation, who was fastest again.

Comfortably Numb excelled in the stronger breeze to record a first and fastest in division three, only one second ahead of Sensei and twelve seconds ahead of Pandora. Over the day’s racing nine places were decided by margins of twelve seconds or less, a compliment to handicapper Gary Illing.
End of Season Dinner In many ways the results showed it was a very even season with trophies shared among many yachts however the cream still rose to the top with the Overall Consistency trophies going to Hard Evidence, Covert Operation and Sensei in their respective divisions. Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) was crowned Club Champion for 2017-18. The coveted Viking Trophy went to Tropical Itch, the Cruiser Cup to Sana II and the inaugural winners of the
Club Champion the crew of Covert Operation with Vice Commodore Brett Bailey
Chris Grant Memorial race were Sally Malay, Show Me and Sensei. The visit of the Clippers to Fremantle featured in a slideshow as did the yacht Finistere which overturned in the Fremantle to Bunbury race with loss of two lives Rob Thomas and Paul Owen. A fundraiser was conducted with proceeds going to FSC to honour the memory of their former Commodore and also the HYC Dinghy Section. Retiring Keelboat Racing Captain Bart Brouwer received a thunderous round of applause as acknowledgement of his excellent five years of leadership of the section. Excellent food and entertainment by Simon and Babba rounded out a very enjoyable evening. John Bird

CRUISING IN COMPANY Mandurah Easter Cruise 2018 With the forecast having indicating an early start to make use of the Easterlies, boats departed Hillarys for Mandurah from 1am onwards on Good Friday morning. Some opted to sail to Rottnest on the Thursday and after overnighting, depart for Mandurah from there on Friday. Winds were initially 5 to 10 knots with a bit more South component than we would have liked and the “4 knot” rule was instigated, that is - if the speed drops below 4 knots, turn on the engine and boost speed. As the day progressed, winds became stronger and we finished the journey in fine style at hull speed. We had six boats on the cruise. On Good Friday evening, we had dinner at Sharkys, a table having been reserved in advance. They are licenced and although specializing in fish and chips, they also offer some meat dishes. Saturday was at leisure until the evening and some cruisers took the train up to Perth to attend the footy. Ian and Cassandra invited us to hold the traditional Banco cocktail party on board Zest, with it’s much more roomy cockpit and this went over very well. Afterwards we retired to Mandurah Yacht Club (MOFSC) for dinner. Most enjoyable! On Easter Sunday morning, Panache and Banco sailed to Dawesville Cut and tied up alongside each other. The two crews had lunch on board Panache after Geoff and John had had a swim. As usual there were dolphins feeding in the area. We experienced good winds, especially on the return sail to MOFSC. That evening, after drinks aboard Vaya con Dios we all had a pleasant dinner at the Jasmine Thai restaurant. Monday saw the return sail to HYC with most boats departing early. We had great Easterly winds for the first half of the journey and then winds became light and variable before settling into the South West It was a very enjoyable weekend and if you haven’t been on an Easter cruise to Mandurah, you should put it on the list for next year! John and Norman, Banco.

AAA Competition The AAA WA State Boat competition, an annual competition for all AAA Angling Clubs’ members was held and hosted by Cockburn Power Boats Association in Cockburn and whilst the conditions were woeful, some nice fish were caught and the HYC were well represented with runners up in the Seniors and Ladies section with yours truly (Ron Thornton, right) winning the heaviest Leather Jacker species. Paul Frzop was also recognised for his contribution.
Harbour Classic A great turn out for the HYC Harbour Classic with conditions to match with some great fish caught. The Juniors out-shone most of the competitors but HYC members Andrew Dunne, Steve Bevis, Mark Williamson, John Cahill, Mitch Graham were successful in picking up prizes for the best fish of the species. Jake Speed and Aidan Rinney, both members of the Angling section, won a Rod & Reel from lucky door prizes. You can see more photos from Harbour Classic 2018 in

The three-day clinic comprises all aspects of fishing, from casting to tying knots and two days of fishing on the Club’s boats. Plenty of fish were caught and the kids with the biggest fish of the species - Hudson McKay, Lewis Dolan, Olivia Freame, Bart Whitehead, Julian Chester and Zen Pascucci all received prizes. The most outstanding junior was Julian Chester with 5 species - well done Julian!
May Beach Comp Nine anglers took part in the weekend Beach competition: six men and three ladies. The weather on the first day was perfect for beach fishing, however on the second day the weather was howling winds and rain and not a lot of fish wanted to play ball. Twilight Cruise 24th March Unfortunately, the cruise was cancelled due to bad weather but we still enjoyed the Pig-on-aSpit which proved very popular with around 70 people attending. Thanks go to Graham for supplying the mobile rotisserie. While we had a captive audience, a raffle was held to raise funds for the children’s playground equipment and many thanks go to all those who generously donated prizes. Thanks again to Graham for providing the first prize, won by Bill McPherson.
Rottnest Run April 2018 A great turn out saw several power boats attending and testing their expertise with a quiz on navigational and regulatory knowledge. Dennis Loran proved to be the master and took the win with Brent Griffith coming second.
Playground Equipment
Members of the Power section, along with two family members, travelled to Serpentine to strip down playground equipment for reallocation at the HYC playground. It was a big and heavy task and by the time we loaded the vehicles, trailers and took off in convoy, it looked like the circus was coming to town. All the equipment is now safely stored on club grounds for reassembling in the near future.
Mini Golf A fun and social day out playing mini golf saw Glenn & Sarah Ironmonger end up at opposite ends of the scorecard! Glenn took out the prize for a hole-in-one and Sarah was a very happy last place! . Our front runners having a rest after a strenuous round of golf
