COMMODORE’S REPORT Hello! I’m hoping you’ve all managed to stay reasonably warm over the last few months, as I have found it to be one of the coldest I have ever known! Sound patronage around the bars and restaurants certainly reveals the depth of bravery that many of our members are prepared to endure in order to enjoy a cold beer or a hearty warm meal at their Club. Whilst the long, freezing winter hasn’t entirely put the brakes on Club activity, it certainly has had a significant impact on our budget. So bring on the warmer Spring weather!
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Thank you to the approximate 70 members who braved the weather to participate in our AGM (7th August 2016). Reports on the club’s finances and activities were presented and the minimal amount of questions raised in general business appears to endorse the notion that all is running well for us here at HYC. Two points worthy of mention though are the new Loyalty Program initiative – see the General Managers report for details - and secondly and most importantly, the possibility of holding a Special General Meeting regarding fees and cash reserves.
CLUB FINANCES The difficult task for those charged with balancing the Club finances together with maximizing the value
in your membership is incredibly challenging in a normal world let alone at a time when a worsening economy threatens the level of income the club requires to cover the ever increasing expenses. The narrative around almost every economic discussion is about the arduous times ahead and we are certainly not immune to the evident tough times at present. With this in mind, we have embarked upon a detailed examination of the impact of these significant rising costs (substantially greater than the CPI suggests) against our flagging income and the subsequent pressure on cash flow. The outcome of this examination suggests we need to take counteractive measures immediately and both Club Management and Executive Committees are busy producing a financial plan not only to address this but also to ensure we are debt free by 2023. I expect we will hold a Special General meeting this November to this effect.
COMMODORES’ BALLS This is the season many WA Yacht Clubs hold their respective Commodores Ball. Natalie and myself have recently attended East Fremantle, Mandurah and Ocean Reef clubs’ special events, all of which have put on a fantastic show and made both of us feel incredibly welcome. I note with interest that Hillarys Yacht Club’s own “CHICK MAGNET” the legendary Kevin Stacy was seen strutting his stuff at the recent Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club Commodores Ball. For those who do not know him, Kevin is our current Club Sailing Champion at the young age of 80+ something. An amazing individual and long-time patron of our Club. HYC’s own 2016 Commodore’s Ball proved to be

a very popular event with the “All That Glitters Is Gold” theme allowing members to glam it up and party on. The Blues Brothers theme band rallied members on very early in the night led by Vice Commodore Barry Jewson. Barry has an apparent love for the lime light and the dance floor, encouraging members to get into the swing of things even before sweets came out. The feature band Peace, Love And All That Stuff had to drop their first set and go straight into the party mode music just to keep up with members ripping up the dance floor.
JAG THE JOKER Your Club is always looking for exciting concepts, means and ways in which members can participate in activities promoting camaraderie and friendship across all HYC sections. Jag The Joker is one of these initiatives recently introduced as a weekday get together where all members can enjoy a quick drink and the chance to win the jackpot (5pm to 7pm Wednesdays). Take the time to attend the next Wednesday afternoon you have free, there is a great dinner deal to go with it.
OUR SPONSORS I would like to take the opportunity through this Compass article to impress upon our members the significance of the incredible support of our Club sponsors. Firstly, a big thank you to our committed sponsors for their ongoing support and generous contributions. The legacy that their support provides is very tangible and can be seen in the ongoing transformation of our Club facilities such as the Wet Bar and in the near future, a kids playground. In addition, our sailors, anglers and divers enjoy the fruits of their sport with prizes largely provided by sponsors. The relationship between the Club and our sponsors is not simply limited to a sign on a notice board, naming rights in Compass or their name mentioned in a presentation. We need to up the ante and look to return the goodwill so generously afforded to us. Keep an eye out for our sponsor’s brands and give them the opportunity to win your custom.
NEW ACTIVITIES As September arrives so will the warmer conditions and the opportunity to enjoy the previously mentioned activities or some of the new activities planned for 2016/17 such as Stand Up Paddling, a family snorkel day and more water based events. Keep an eye our for the promo’s.
MELBOURNE CUP The HYC Melbourne Cup Luncheon is a great way to enjoy “the race that stops the nation”. You can be guaranteed The Harbour Room will be packed and everyone will be in fine form relishing the great dining experience that comes with this special day and later dance the afternoon away to the tunes of the band of the day. With a bit of luck you might get lucky in a sweepstake but be assured this is a club event not to be missed!
THE QUEENSLAND ANNEX Brett Young and Tanya Bartram who were only just recently sailing their First 35 (Haywire) here at HYC have moved to Queensland with the boat and along with Karen and John Cable are competing in the Hamilton island Race Week. Andy Hill has made the trip across to crew. For the record Karen and John Cable, HYC members who also moved to Queensland would like us to believe they run the HYC Airlie Beach annex, and in good spirit offer up their hospitality to club members (provided you bring the drinks). Vice Commodore Neil Harrison and his wife Wendy are also competing in the event on different boats with Wendy doing very well at this stage on the “all girl crew” 45 foot “Mister Jibe” If you haven’t been to the club recently, please take the opportunity to reacquaint yourself with the fabulous social and dining opportunities on offer, preferably invite some of your friends to join you and introduce them to our magnificent facilities. I hope to see you around!

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT
AROUND THE CLUB
LOYALTY REWARDS PROGRAM
Well here we are only a month away from Opening Day and the start of another summer season. Winter has certainly felt colder and the weather not really conducive to good boating. Dinghy and Keel racing has had their interruptions with weekend weather and strong wind warnings reducing racing days and sailing opportunities. Obviously power boating and cruising has also been affected which is easily recognisable by the lower fuel sales experienced. During the last twelve weeks there has only really been one weekend, that of 13/14 August which allowed for on water activity and good boating weather. Winter has always had its quieter moments, so hopefully with spring upon us and some sunnier days being looked forward to, activity in, out and around the Club will be welcomed. Wednesday Jag the Joker and Friday Night member draws are a great opportunity to have the chance of winning and being rewarded for attending the Club. Both draws now jackpot weekly with prizes of $650 and $550 currently available. All you have to do is be there to have the chance of winning. So get down to the Club, enjoy the activities, the company of fellow members and all the Club has to offer.
Advice to date suggests many members are now aware of the way the program operates. The more you use your card when enjoying food and beverage at the Club, the more you receive in return! Loyalty rewards start accruing once the first level, your $130 quarterly levy, has been reached. Increased rewards accrue at subsequent levels being $260, $520 and $780. Reward beverage vouchers are printed at the tills when each level is achieved. They do not have to be used immediately and can be left to increase with each level. Vouchers do not expire until the end of the following levy period. If a till receipt is printed at the time of purchase, the receipt identifies the members spend and the level reached to date. The reward beverage voucher can be redeemed when the member wishes. If the voucher is used at the first level, another voucher will become available when the second level is reached. If you have any queries, food and beverage staff can assist your inquiries at the point of sale tills.
OCTOBER COME & TRY We are again opening the Club up during the month of October, including Opening Day, to allow anyone interested in joining the Club to experience all we have to offer. This is a great opportunity to let your friends and neighbours know they are welcome to try out the Club, its hospitality, its activities, its views and to meet other members. All visitors do need to be signed in when they attend or if they make a restaurant booking.
DISCOVER SAILING DAY Also part of the “Come and Try” month is Discover Sailing Day on Sunday 23rd October. This day always attracts plenty of people and families to the Club to go out sailing on yachts and dinghies provided by our members who kindly volunteer their time in support of the Club. It’s a great opportunity for any current members who may want to go for a sail to get out there too. So let your friends know there is plenty to do during October at Hillarys Yacht Club

Dive Adventures Hillarys Yacht Club Divers explore Indonesian waters Every year the HYC Dive Section embarks on an overseas dive trip and this year it was to Manado on Celebes Island, Indonesia. 10 club members and 3 others flew to Singapore and then Manado to stay at Tasik Ria Resort for 22 dives in 8 days. The diving was primarily in Bunaken National Marine Park which, as a protected area, offered some of the worlds best tropical reef diving. Highlights of the trip included close encounters with a brand new Sperm Whale calf and many very healthy looking turtles. All manner of fish, soft and hard coral, sea horses, anemone with symbiotic clown fish, gorgonian fans and of course sharks provided hours of underwater viewing pleasure. Some of our drift dives had us virtually low flying along reef walls replete with a kaleidoscopic display of colour and abundant marine life. The resort had a Fawlty Towers air to it with its best years definitely in the past, but any accommodation shortfall was offset by delightful staff always ready to help. A request to source limes and mint led to the invention of a cocktail now known as the “Manado”. A concoction that contravenes the nuclear, biological and chemical treaties of 36 countries but surely heals any ailment. As an added bonus, it also kills cockroaches. As our divers are all experienced, the diving was event and stress free. The dive guides also relaxed, realising this was not a baby sitting exercise as they so often are. We watched with amusement as other snorkel and dive groups thrashed in the water and kicked each other. The participants were Rick, Judy, Michael, Sue, JG, Cass, Kamila, Margaret, Nicola and myself from HYC. Troy from Perth Diving Academy organised the trip and was our sherpa. Garth and Amanda made up a very cohesive

group of 13 divers and I am delighted to say that despite the tummy grumbles, poor plumbing, bug bites and other loud and annoying guests, laughter and companionship prevailed. Next years adventure is planned for Komodo in the first week of July on a live aboard boat. This is being organised once again through Troy at PDA and I thank him for his sterling work in organising the Manado trip.

BORNEO With the larger group heading off to Manado for an 'all dive' trip four of us opted to go for some diving in Borneo combined with a chance to venture into the rainforest. First stop was Kota Kinabalu and three nights unwinding by the water. Non-divers enjoyed the spa while the divers had two days in Tunka Abdul Rahman Marine Park. This area is not on most divers must-do list and we can conclude it probably shouldn't be. It was wet and warm and not much more. Unfortunately a typhoon way to the north stirred things up and the visability was not dissimilar to Rottnest after a 4m swell. If you wanted a photo of more than your hand in front of your face it would have been a challenge! Still this was always a prelude to the main event. Our 'no dive' day before flying was spent getting some culture at the local tribal village. The reputation of HYC clearly preceded us as one of our group was sworn in as the visiting tribal chief for the day! Stage 2 on the trip was Sandakan on the northern tip of Borneo and an overnight journey to the rainforest. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is only a 40 minute drive from the town on the way to our jungle lodge. These amazing animals are brought here as orphans and through the recovery process are released into a protected but unrestricted reserve where they are free to leave. They take years to gain the skills to become fully independent and will return less and less as they grow. That night after checking in to our eco forest lodge we took a cruise along a tributary of the Kinabatangan River to spot the troops of screeching proboscis monkeys as the
settled into the tree tops for the night. On our final jungle day we visited Gomantong Cave where a million swallows build nests from saliva only for locals to harvest them for Chinese soup. And this is called a delicacy! The mess from the swallows is cleared up by an Indiana Jones moving carpet of cockroaches that cover hand rails and boardwalks. Just don't look down! Finally time for another short flight, then bus and 45 minute boat transfer to Mabul Island and the chance to dive at Palau Sipadan. For any diver who enjoys the tropical fish side of our chosen sport, this ranks as amongst the best in the world. A tiny coral peak sitting on top of 600 metres of underwater cliffs. It is hard to put into words the exhilaration of floating alongside walls of coral teaming with small fish, with reef sharks and large Green Turtles at almost every turn, while below you is nothing but the black of the deep. Even our non-diving partners took the chance to snorkel and get a sense of the amazing world beneath these particular waves. Being only two in our group we also had the opportunity to venture into Turtle Cavern, a pitch black cave beneath the island that becomes a graveyard for turtles that become disorientated in the dark. The risk of losing a diver means the guides do not often take clients here where the floor is littered with the skeletal remains. Trip over; all that is left is the boat, bus and flights back to a wintery Perth.

COMMODORE’S BALL
A T A GL A N C E
SEPTEMBER
A wonderful evening of glitz and glamour celebrated the end of season at the annual Commodore’s Ball. All that Glitters is Gold was the theme carried throughout the event, from the glittery backdrop where our guests posed for photos to the menus and sparkles on the tables. Commodore Simon Davenport opened the evening by thanking guests for attending before everyone was treated to a three course meal and a floor show from Blues Brothers. The hit band Peace, Love and all that stuff followed and got most people to their feet to fill the dance floor! And so a great night had to come to an end eventually with trails of glitter following guests out on their departure! Thank you to the Chefs, function staff and Simon Davenport for putting on yet another fantastic event to add to the long list of successful Commodore’s Balls.

NOVEMBER
The bar was lifted once again this year with the decision to put on a party style Christmas in July event. There was no need to wait until December to get into the Christmas spirit with drinks flowing well into the night! Our traditional Christmas buffet was met with many a compliment to the Chefs and clean plates making their way back to the kitchen. The sensational Perth duo Kokomo kicked us into ‘party mode’, once again filling the dance floor and creating a night to remember! The addition of live music to Christmas in July celebrations was a huge success, and in fact, it may prove difficult to top this in December, but of course... we’ll give it our best shot!

Know your skipper
Bart Brouwer surprisingly managed to convince Marie to crew the family Spacesailor 20 for Rottnest trips. He was a regular crew member on an Endeavour 24 at RPYC before family commitments intervened. When the kids had grown a bit he started sailing again as crew on a Javelin at Perth Dinghy Sailing Club. At age 40 plus, Bart and his skipper were clearly in the “veterans” category for this performance dinghy. They set the club record for most number of capsizes in a race. Bart quickly decided to give up on the Javelin and crew on a more age-appropriate Farr 38 at FSC instead.
HYC Perspective
Age and Membership Bart is a keen keelboat racing sailor who has been a member of HYC since 2005 and is 58 years young. He grew up in Perth and having moved into the Sorrento area back in 1986, Bart can still remember the vigorous opposition to the boat harbour and the early years when the shops were largely empty of customers.
Initially Bart sailed as crew on the M27 class yacht, Covert Operation. He then took the opportunity to buy a half ownership share and has since shared skippering the boat with his co-owner and then neighbor, Graham Atkinson. The last 10 years sailing at HYC have been the most enjoyable for Bart. He considers Covert Operation an exciting and rewarding boat to sail and the dedicated crew makes it a double pleasure. The highlight was when Covert Operation won the Keelboat Club Champion’s trophy in 2011. His recollection of HYC when he first became a member was how friendly and informal the club was. The diversity of activities is the other big distinguishing feature of the club.
Family Background Bart and Marie have been married for over 25 years and they have twin daughters, Ann and Jill. His father was a keen sailor and handyman who built his first three sailboats himself to teach Bart and his brothers how to sail. Bart considers his biggest achievement was surviving two years at home as the principal carer of their twin baby girls. He became expert at many things like changing nappies, mushing vegetables and never sleeping. The girls are 19 years old now so Bart doesn’t have to change nappies or mush vegetables any more, but he says there are still a few sleepless nights.
Occupation Bart has recently retired from a lengthy career as a tax accountant with the ATO. He is now busy focusing on his family, some longstanding projects and his role as HYC Keelboat Racing Captain.
Yachts and Achievements Bart has sailed on or owned a number of boats. First was a Windrush 600. This was an oversize surf cat which was well designed for getting quickly to Rottnest and parking on the beach in front of the pub. After this he

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT This winter has been a challenge to conduct events on the water. At the same time, a number of items of Training and Development are being developed. Tackers has continued as our major training effort, with the July School Holiday introducing 11 children to sailing through their participation in Tackers 1 in the first week! Five of these went on to complete the Tackers 2 course. The young sailors who completed this course were very excited to meet our Commodore, Simon Davenport.
HYC’S APPROACH TO WATER TRAINING ACTIVITIES Naturally, at HYC, we continue to ensure the highest quality of duty of care for our activities. We recognise that all water activities carry some degree of risk and there are a number of actions to be taken before an activity is conducted at HYC to ensure we consider it safe to go ahead. We need to visit the Weather Bureau forecast sites and consider the weather in regards to the specific activity - whether it be junior sailing, dinghy racing, angling or diving or other. For this, our go-to websites are www.seabreeze.com.au or www.bom.gov.au. Secondly we need to consider any relevant Shark activity in the vicinity of the Club activity. The web site we use is www.sharksmart.com.au which provides real time updates and reports of sightings using information fed through by Surf Life Saving WA and the Department of Fisheries. These reports are then considered relevant by their location to our Club activities. The decision is then made on whether the activity continues.
DUYFKEN: 2016 HARTOG EXHIBITION We are working with the management of the Duyfken with their visit to Hillarys in September. Dutchman Dirk Hartog and his crew became the first Europeans to walk on Western Australian soil when they landed on an island just north of Shark Bay in 1616. This year the Duyfken replica – a rare reproduction of typical Dutch trading vessels of Hartog’s time – will be central to the 400th commemoration of this significant event in Western Australian history. Many of the local schools will have the opportunity to have a look at the ship before it continues its voyage as part of the 400 year celebrations.
UPCOMING TRAINING A new Keel program will commence in September using the two M27’s: HYC Training and Xtreme. This will involve identifying the necessary sailing skills to be delivered. Thursday afternoon Dinghy training will commence in September in accordance with our water space application.
FREE TACKERS DAY On Saturday, September 17, HYC will conduct a Discover Sailing Day from the beach in the Marina adjacent to where the Duyfken will be on display. This is open to the public.

DIVE
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm
As the season is closed for crays, the dive group goes into hibernation. Many of the group resort to heading to the warmer waters of the Maldives, Fiji and Indonesia to enjoy spectacular diving and escape the cold. However, a weight retrieval on N Jetty on 30 July harvested 34 chain weights. Each one weighs something in the order of 90kgs and divers play about in the muck and 16 degree water to locate and attach the weights while a ground crew winch, clean and store the weights for repair and reuse. So, with not much to report, I thought I might describe my favourite sea creatures, the Cuttlefish. It is actually not a fish (as it’s name might suggest) but is a mollusc. It belongs in a class of Cephalopod that includes octopus, squid and nautilus. These critters are seriously intelligent to the degree that it is generally accepted that they are smarter than dogs. They have one of the largest brain to body size ratios of all invertebrates. They also have one of the fastest growth rates in the animal kingdom but only live for one to two years. The cuttlebone you might have seen at the beach is a porous aragonite (calcium carbonate) structure which is used for buoyancy. This is done by changing the gas to liquid ratio in the cuttlebone
chambers. One of our dive section members uses the cuttlebones as moulds for making jewellery. Some of the really fascinating features are the eyes, skin and blood. They have a W shaped pupil which allows them to look both forward and backwards at the same time and while they don’t see colour, they can perceive the polarisation of light. Their skin is covered in chromatophores that are sacks of hundreds of thousands of pigment granules controlled by hundreds of muscles. These provide the cuttlefish with the capacity to camouflage, warn, communicate and just plain old show off. They can also change skin texture and shape. They are mesmerising to watch on a dive as they are often not shy when you find one under a ledge. Their blood is green/blue as it uses the copper containing protein haemocyanin
20 Compass September 2016 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc
to transport oxygen. They have three hearts. One for each of the pair of gills and the other for the rest of the body. Oh, and by the way, they are venomous. When it comes to body structure, the males differ from the females by having eight arms and two tentacles while the female has two less arms. Really smart young male cuttlefish have been observed disguising themselves as females by hiding two of their arms and pretending to carry an egg sack. They sneak past the guarding male and mate with the female. Very cheeky. They can be very curious and I have had them investigating my dive gauges. Perhaps they are attracted to the luminescence or are just wondering how much air I have left before I have to surface and leave them in peace. They will occasionally investigate your hand if you use it to mimic their shape by extending your finger and thumb sideways and dangling the middle three fingers. Some divers have reported aggressive encounters directed
towards their face but I have only detected a curiosity as they either see their reflection in the dive mask or just want to look you in the eye. They will occasionally help you corral a cray knowing they will be rewarded with a leg or two. Sometimes they will even try to take a cray out of your hand. One that lived in a cave at Cow Rocks got to know me so well that it would come out to greet me and eventually allowed me to stroke its underbody. This was accompanied by a rhythmic extension and contraction of the throwing arms and vivid skin pulsing. It would then follow me on the dive knowing it would be rewarded with something tasty to eat. Of all the sea creatures I have encountered in 42 years of diving, the cuttlefish stands as the most intelligent, entertaining and fun critter in the ocean.

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4 Wed of the Month at 7.00pm
DINGHY
th
Our Presentation evening in early June was well attended by sailors, family and volunteers to celebrate another enjoyable year for our Dinghy Division. Awards included Club Championships and Consistency for the Summer Series, the Winter Series 2015, plus individual awards for both sailing and on shore endeavours. The Winter Series 2016 race days have had an increase in boats from last year, which is pleasing considering the weather on some days. It shows that it is always worth the effort to come to HYC, check if it is suitable to go for sail, to see sailing friends, and maybe for some hot food from the Snack Shack. On the Saturdays between the Winter Series race days, there has been training for those wanting to improve their skills or are transitioning to another Class. In June we had a team successfully take part in a Dinghy Teams racing regatta at RFBYC. We have reviewed and revised our annual calendar of activities with the intention of improving the variety and enjoyment of sailing, social and related activities for people of all ages, both male and female, for our
healthy outdoors lifestyle. In September all Dinghy and Keel fleets are looking forward to again taking part in Bart’s Bash which is the World’s largest sailing event. Last year, this was very successful at Hillarys. Also in September we have our Registration day and training activities for the Summer events which start with the Club Opening Day in October. Preparations and training are also taking place for many sailing events away from our Club, including National Championships of all our Classes during the Christmas period. We wish all those taking part in these events the best of luck, and look forward to seeing everyone back at HYC.

KEELBOAT RACING
UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm
Winter Racing Conditions for winter racing this year has ranged from strong winds (and even stormy conditions) resulting in postponement or cancellation of races and such light conditions that yachts retired. In division one experience and all-round performance has paid off for Hard Evidence, Jack Tar, Mulberry and Deckchairs Overboard and they are at the top of the leader-board. In Race 1 Vaya Con Dios revelled in the heavier conditions to get well ahead whilst Mulberry got in some early practice for the MOB race. In Races 2 and 4 Jack Tar had a close duel (one would say too close) with Hard Evidence, each having a win. In division two Volant (two wins) and Covert Operation are at the top and hard pressed by Helga, Zinfandel and HYC Training. Catabatic and Sensei have shared the spoils in division 3.
Handicap System Off the water, discussion has centred on the merits of the handicapping system and the possible change to the current method to bring about a quicker response to continued success, or lack thereof, to enable every boat to succeed. In many ways the handicapper’s job is a thankless task, rectified here with a huge thank you to Gary Illing who conscientiously undertakes his role in a professional manner.
Be Prepared
the new season. Remember: Category 6 is for the inshore consistency races, Category 4 for Fremantle, Rottnest and Mindarie races whilst those venturing farther offshore may require Category 3, 2 or 1.
September Action Those enjoying the winter hibernation will be lured out for the Cocktail Party on Friday September 16, a chance to dressup and enjoy the warmth of friends and of the Clubhouse before embracing Bart’s Bash on Sunday September 18. Bart’s Bash is a great opportunity to get out on the water, keelboats and dinghies alike, raise a few dollars for a good cause and help to set a Guinness World Record for the number of boats in a race. Last year HYC was one of the best represented in Australia, so let’s do it again.
Dirk Hartog Anniversary Celebration Great to see that HYC has 3 yachts represented in the race and rally north to Geraldton and Denham starting from Fremantle on Saturday October 15th. Kraken is in the doublehanded division, Mulberry will race in division two and Perle will be in the rally division. Good luck to all crews.
■ John Bird
If you are using the off-season to prepare your boat then book early as the lifters are usually busy just before the opening day. Attention is drawn to regulations requiring fire extinguishers older than the 5 year date stamp on them to be pressure tested or renewed (see page 30). This will be checked when your safety check is carried out for

CRUISING IN COMPANY
The new season for the CIC has been active with one sea based event and three that were land based. The Mindarie Cruise, Sunday 29th May was a motor/sail cruise as the wind died after 30 minutes of our leaving Hillarys Boat Harbour. However the Western swells made the voyage between the Three Mile Reef and the Burns Rock reef spectacular. The entrance over shallower waters on the leads into Mindarie Marina went from being spectacular to quite concerning with our adrenalin levels raised somewhat as our boats were pushed along by the swells. As the swell had subsided, the cruise back to Hillarys was very pleasant. On June 19th the bike ride, walk or drive to Burns Beach for Brekky from HYC, Mullaloo or Ocean Reef was well attended with the weather being kind to all. Thanks to Norm and Shelley Cowper for organising the morning.
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm
BOWLING On Sunday July 31st the CIC sailors were looked after by the ladies of the Osborne Park Bowling Club in weather that was not at all kind to us. However we managed to get a few “ends” in and a few of us “kissed the kitty”. Going by the laughter and squeals a great time was had by all. Thanks to organisers John and Sue Bird.

DAY TRIP TO GUILDFORD SUNDAY JULY 3RD 2016. Wow what a great day! Seventeen people enjoyed a train ride into the city then out on the Midland line - it’s so easy on the trains. Alighting at Guildford we were met by four more who had gone by car. Lunch was at the Rose and Crown Hotel built in 1841, this year celebrating its 175th anniversary. Thank you to all who participated. It wouldn’t be the same without you.

Special mention was made of the contributions of all committee members who performed their duties without fault. The contribution of long serving treasurer, Morrie Elson was worth special mention and thanks. All committee positions were declared vacant and were then put to a vote with the following results. MAY BOAT COMPETITION Unfortunately, winter weather came early wiping out the scheduled competition day and also the next week causing the May boat competition to be cancelled.
JUNE BOAT COMPETITION Despite a borderline forecast for sea conditions and the threat of rain later in the day, 19 anglers signed on for the day’s fishing. The wind waited until the competition started and then made conditions far from comfortable. However, at the weigh in, 9 species were presented, with Greg Mansell’s 722g Skippy and Frank Pierucci’s 2.589Kg dhufish the stand-out fish. Of the four junior anglers, Jake Speed (pictured left) with 4 species was the winner, closely followed by Aiden Rinney with 3 species.
28 Compass September 2016 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm
With 4 species, which included a 630g tarwhine, Ruby McGrady was the lady winner (pictured right). Of the 11 men fishing, Frank Pierucci with 6 species was the winner from Greg Mansell with 3 species. The lucky fish wheel spin was won by Greg Mansell with a 174g sand whiting.
JULY BOAT COMPETITION The weather forecast for the scheduled competition day was such that the competition was deferred to the next week, Sunday 24th July, when at last, there was a weather forecast to delight a boat angler’s heart! South, south easterly winds 10 – 15 knots all day with flat seas and little swell forecast. Encouraged by the forecast and despite the minimum temperature at 4 degrees, 19 anglers signed up for the competition. The weigh-in saw 14 species represented, the most for the current competition year, with the best fish being Adrian Broadbent’s 2.425kg baldchin groper, Allan McDiarmid’s 1.070kg skippy and Jake Speed’s 1.665kg harlequin. Several undersized dhufish were landed and successfully released by the anglers on Balaton Jack. Of the four juniors, Jake Speed with 4 species was the winner from Ryan McDiarmid with 4 species. Jake’s feature fish was a 1.665Kg harlequin. With only one lady entering the competition, deciding the winner was easy. Congratulations to Ruby McGrady, 2 species the winner! There was close competition in the men’s section with Allan McDiarmid (pictured below) winning with 5 species from Alan Partridge, 4 species and Frank Pierucci, also 4 species . The lucky fish on the wheel spin was Eric Lay’s sand whiting of 200g.

MARINA FACILITIES
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Mon of the Month at 7.30pm
The requirements to inspect/service/replace fire extinguishers have changed and the HYC By Laws now reflect these changes. All fire extinguishers now need to be serviced/ tested/replaced at the time interval specified by the manufacturer and the Australian Standards AS1851-2012. This places the onus on the owner to undertake a check every 6 months as follows: a. Check that the extinguisher has not been discharged. b. Check the extinguisher for damage and corrosion. c. Check operating pressure. Gauge pointer should be in green zone. d. Check that the nozzle is not blocked. e. Check cylinder date stamp (normally on neck or on the base). If it is over 5 years old it will require a pressure test/refilling or replacing. One of the main causes of extinguisher failure is compaction and solidification. To reduce this risk extinguishers should be regularly rotated/shaken. The Marina Facilities Committee has recommended a phased in approach to compliance and non-marked/dated fire extinguishers will be marked with a permanent marker as inspections take place, however all fire extinguishers must comply with the new standards as from 1 January 2020 for vessels to pass the Marina Compliance Inspection. (Note: Vessels subject
to Australian Sailing accreditation will require immediate compliance). There are a number of ways to record the expiry date of your safety equipment including the following methods: • Keeping a diary • Putting the expiry dates in your smart phone calendar • Clearing marking the expiry date on the extinguisher using a permanent marker • Using the DOT “Don’t Expire” sticker - available from the HYC office • Use the tags now supplied with all new extinguishers Safe Boating!

POWER
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm
Hopefully you have flourished in the cold, wet winter we have just endured! We look forward to a great improvement for the rest of the year. The Power Section has been a little quiet with only the very hardy taking to the water during recent weeks. We did however undertake a Pirate Raid to Claremont Yacht Club and steal the pirate Chest which, for the time being, resides at HYC. 30 people took part in the raid and a great time was had by all. Thanks to Jim for driving the coach and to CYC for organising the event. We look forward to the return – when we invite a club to raid HYC! By the time you read this report, Smokies Disco will have been and gone – I hope you all enjoyed it and have recovered from any aches and pains that resulted. After a ten week absence overseas I have been catching up on what has been going on at the Club and the Power Section. It is great to see that an initiative such as ‘Jag the Joker’ has been attracting members interest and increasing attendance at the Club. We hope to see you all there! The Power Section is planning several activities over the next few months. These will include a Wine Cruise/ Tour, a Lunch Cruise and a Twilight Cruise. Please watch for details on the web site, on flyers and on posters as plans become finalised. Just a reminder – the Power Section monthly meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm. We have, as regular members, owners of big boats, small boats and indeed several members who are not boat owners. We would love to see new members in all those categories at future meetings and at future Power Boat Section activities.
