COMMODORE’S REPORT As I write this report we are in the midst of some extremely cold and stormy weather and the warmth of summer seems so distant. Fortunately, Opening Day 2017 and the formal commencement of our sailing season is just around the corner. With this comes the air of excitement for members re-uniting themselves with the pleasures of our club and all that summer affords us. This year’s Opening Day theme is ‘Sea Creatures’ and by the time you receive this Compass issue it will be time to organise your boats and costumes ready for the sail past. Naturally, getting out on the water is not for everyone, so for those who just want to be entertained by the activities of the day, there will be much to do.
Commodore’s Ball The recent HYC Commodore’s Ball was a great success with a full house, and seats selling out early it confirms just how good a show the Club puts on. Visiting Commodores were very impressed with how Hillarys members got behind the Club particularly when it comes to embracing the theme of the night. The meals were superb as was the service and of course the band was the highlight. With the “Ball” season upon us, Natalie and I have been thoroughly enjoying ourselves visiting many clubs. As usual, we have been made welcome on every occasion, a courtesy extended by a long tradition of friendship between yacht clubs.
Annual General Meeting The 2017 Annual General Meeting saw the following Club Officers and Captains retire from their positons. Their dedication to furthering the needs of their sections has been nothing less than exemplary and when you consider the time and commitment required to fulfil those positions they are all most certainly worthy of our sincere thanks: Captain Angling Greg Mansell Captain Dive Brian Meade Captain Marina Facilities N/A Captain Power Leigh Clifton Captain Cruising John and Sue Bird

The incredible effort he and his team make to ensure our Club runs as seamlessly as possible (which often goes unnoticed) is significant and without their contribution, our Club would not be the wonderful place it is. Special mention also goes Tony Sheehan who, after 12 years of excellent service, retires from active duties on Committee. His journey with this Club has arguably seen us through our most substantial change and expansion. His contribution to the Club, alongside the other architects of our transformation and advancement, can easily be seen in the splendour of this magnificent facility we all enjoy today. Whilst Tony will continue to be active as a volunteer, I am sure there will be many more journeys planned around our great state with wife Jan and their much-loved caravanning life.

The AGM is also our chance to acknowledge our champions for the year and as such, on behalf of all members of HYC, I congratulate the following winners: The Junior Sports Star: Jackson Porter Jackson successfully made the transition from the Optimist class to Laser 4.7 class with a third placing in the National Championships in Adelaide in December. Jackson will compete again in the Nationals this year in Queensland following completion of his secondary school studies. The Senior Sports Star: Ruby O’Grady. Ruby won the AAA State Boat Championship on a particularly rough and windy day at sea and was part of the Ladies team that was second in the team’s event. Ruby regularly assists with the juniors developing their skills to land the big one. The Club Person of the Year: Gary Illing As the Keelboat handicapper, Gary uses and advises on the use of the computer software program “Finishing Line” to produce results during the sailing season and for Presentation Night. In addition, Gary assisted the Dinghy section to adopt the Finishing Line program with seminars on its use and also drives the start-boat for them. Our club, as it stands, is testament to the many committed members, sponsors and volunteers who have shaped and carved out our place on this gorgeous part of the coast. Being mindful of the need to continue the legacy they created, I encourage all members to embrace the myriad of activities and events on offer either by volunteering, sponsoring or simply participating. The rewards are exceptional! An example of this is the reunion on the 5th August of our 2011 World Sailing Championship Race Management Team. The camaraderie on the day was outstanding as many of us recounted (possibly slightly embellished) the countless tales of the event. This great initiative from the Dinghy Division spring boards a real focus on further developing our volunteer base and an exciting opportunity for members to get more out of the Club. We have been speaking with the organisers of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and HYC is most likely to play a role supporting the “on water” leg of the Baton Relay as the baton makes its way up the northern coast of Perth. Watch this space.

Financial The last year has been financially very challenging and, albeit small, we achieved a well-earned surplus for the year in both our financial performance and cash position. With the combined business acumen of our newly appointed Flag Officers, the experience of our skilled staff in Management and the input from our passionate membership base I am very confident that as our financial plan unfolds over the next few years, the charge forward toward a sustainable and prosperous future will come to fruition (debt free 2023). With spring almost upon us, I sincerely hope all members join me in taking advantage of the Club and its sensational ocean views, food and atmosphere. I hope to see you around the Club sharing the HYC experience with your friends, family and colleagues.
A Final Thank You This is to be my final report as Commodore and my last opportunity to formally thank all members for the support, encouragement and camaraderie both Natalie and myself have received over the past two years. We have both thoroughly enjoyed the honour and privilege that comes with the role of Commodore, we have made lifelong friends and look forward to being part of HYC’s future as its unfolds. Thank you. Simon Davenport, Commodore

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT A NEW YEAR The first three months of our financial year has produced some positive results. Food and beverage operations are currently above forecast, mainly due to stronger function activity. Member spend during these winter months has been lower than expected. With the summer season approaching and some planned initiatives, including development of weekend activities, Wet Bar Sundays, Open October, member and section events and Christmas corporate involvement, we hope the positive start will continue. Boatlifting operations have also been positive during this period and above the results of last year. August, however, given the recent inclement weather, is expected to lower year to date results. The wet and colder weather has also had effect on our fuel sales. Almost every weekend for six weeks has not been conducive to boating or generating fuel sales. Other operating areas of the Club, membership and pen fees are holding to projection, services revenues are below forecast and operating expenses continue to be a frustrating factor.
FIVE (5) YEAR PEN LEASE EXTENSIONS During October and November these leases near the end date of their current terms and as renewed provide the revenues assisting our operations and forecast expectations. Five year renewal notices will soon be distributed. Should these extensions not be taken up, other pen occupants interested in securing a five year lease term should express their interest and contact the Club. The term of the leases is actually 5.25 years so as to be aligned with the head lease of the Club. Listed below are the expected outlay amounts required to secure a 5.25 year pen lease term. 10 metre $26,625 12 metre $34,855 15 metre $49,925 16 metre $54,210 20 metre $76,630 If you are a current pen holder and interested in securing one of our five year pen lease terms, you should contact the Club and submit your expression of interest.

About the Clipper Round the World Race The record breaking 40,000 nautical mile race is the only race of its kind where organisers supply a fleet of identical 70-foot ocean racing yachts and a fully qualified skipper to look after the crew. Having completed a rigorous training course, the crews are geared up in the latest extreme protection clothing to commence a challenge usually reserved for seasoned professionals. For the taxi drivers, chief executives, students, lawyers and other occupations that form the crews, it is a supreme challenge and an endurance test

like no other. Clipper Race organisers admit “the sea does not distinguish between Olympians or novices. There is nowhere to hide - if Mother Nature throws down the gauntlet, you must be ready to face the same challenges as the pro racer. The epic round the world race is divided into 8 legs and 14 individual races and participants can choose to do one, some or all the legs. The fleet departed from Liverpool, England on 20 August and you can track their progress at the Clipper Race website: www.clipperroundtheworld.com

CLUB EVENTS The Great Gatsby Commodores Ball A fitting and glamourous farewell for Commodore Simon Davenport as he welcomed VIPs and Members to his last Commodore’s Ball. And what a night it was! Over 250 guests packed the Harbour Room, decked out in black, gold and red to transform into the ultimate Great Gatsby party! Empty plates made their way back to the kitchen after each of the three courses served and there were many compliments on the night, and feedback that followed, that the Chefs had outdone themselves this year. With a floor show by the Flapper Girls from Sugar Burlesque opening the entertainment, Perth band LA Gold lit up the stage and filled the dance floor for the evening. You can see some photos of this year’s Commodore’s Ball in the ‘Through the Porthole’ section on page 18.
Best of British Rock This was a different style of event usually seen at Hillarys Yacht Club, but the support was overwhelming! Selling out at 250 guests, two weeks before the event, it was always bound to be a great night out! Members and their guests were treated to happy hour drinks with complementary bar snacks, plus a British themed menu before three of the best tribute acts in Perth took to the stage. With music by Rod Stewart, Annie Lennox and Tom Jones, how could the dance floor not be full? The performers really put on a show for us and a great night was had by all! As always, thank you to the Chefs and service staff who ensure these events run so smoothly on the night - it is genuinely a pleasure to host such events when they are so well supported!
Social Events
Christmas in July Yes, we were quite sure there was no need to wait until December! Another sell out event with over 200 guests feasting on the Christmas-themed buffet while Perth duo Pretty Fly set the atmosphere with some great music, and of course, who doesn’t like a dance at Christmas time?!

Know your skipper Water sports and sailing have always been an important part of Irishman, Ian Conboy’s life, whose parents made sure that he could swim from a young age. Ian’s mother loved the sea and would bring all to swim at a derelict mill race, where his father, who wasn’t a good swimmer, would wade out to a sandbank on the other side of the mill race and wait for the young Ian to dive off and propel himself under the water and hopefully come up near where his father stood. He says that when he first felt that ‘silky feeling’ he thought ‘the water is for me’! It would later turn into a passion for the sea. Later, boarding in high school in Ireland led Ian to become very active in the canoe club, so active in fact he would sneak out to illegal ‘night time forays’: “I had the key to the canoe shed and we used to paddle across the Garavouge River to a night club. You know how you would be at 16 or 17, bursting to get out…and that all went well until we got caught” - no more key! In university, Ian ran the canoe and surf club, where he accidentally got into surfing when he was hammered at the mouth of a canoeing river, by a famous surf break. It was an experience that turned his passion from canoeing to surfing. “After that I don’t think I sat in a canoe again, I just went surfing”. Thirty years later and after a change of address for work reasons, he found himself nowhere near a surf break. But having left the Love of his Life, Marie a surf and windsurf widow for far too long, they both turned up at the local sailing club to try their hand at something that they could do together: Dinghy racing initially in a 420 and then a Dart 16 catamaran finally upgrading to the more competitive Hobie FX1. That went well until a particularly bad gybe, where Marie and her harness line got wrapped around the mast a few times. It didn’t put her off sailing, just cat(amaran)s. Thinking about that incident he explains “You see, when choosing your life partner, you have to be careful. Marie’s father Johnny gifted his daughter an unparalleled
Ian Conboy education of boats and camping”. That stood out more for Ian, when he was choosing, than the fact that Marie would soon become a doctor and he could retire when 55! During that time Marie and Ian also crewed on various racing keelboats, honing their skills and so in 2006 they took the plunge and bought their first keelboat, a 1990 Beneteau First 325 they now call ‘Sandrine’. The move from Ireland in 2012 could have been daunting, leaving a network of family and friends behind. But, for the Conboy family, it has been made easy with sailing and club life and the opportunities it offers. Their son, Rian also an accomplished sailor, coached in HYC and is now skippering the Youth Training boat ‘Xtreme’. HYC and in particular its people, eased them into Aussie life without a hiccup. As he says’ Sailing is a sport that when you are partaking, it consumes your thoughts; nothing else matters, except you and the people you are with, and the people in HYC are all that matter”.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT As we look forward to the start of next season, our preparations are almost complete with the production of the new 2017/18 Sailing Handbooks – many thanks to Garry Illing for his assistance in their production. Our preparations are also focused on Opening Day on 8th October with this year’s theme of ‘Sea Creatures’ bound to produce some great boat costumes! The timing of this year’s proceedings at Opening Day has been altered slightly to allow all Members to hear the speeches on the Boardwalk without having to rush off to prepare boats for the Sailpast and we’d encourage all Members to be a part of this gathering. Several of our members have been participating in the winter series across the Metropolitan area. The Huck Scott Winter series at Fremantle Sailing club was completed on August 12 after the racing was cancelled due to inclement weather. As a testament to their training and commitment, our young sailors performed well with the Optimist Silver sailors dominating their fleet with Nicholas Wurster 2nd, Mitch Graham 3rd, Ben Graham 4th, Logan Lynn 6th and Bradley Dick 7th. Aidan Gardner was 10th in the Optimist Gold. Caitlin Shaw was 5th and Bryce Taylor was 7th in the Laser 4.7. Campbell Stewart was 5th in the Laser Radial. James Stewart was 1st and Marcus Fisk was 7th in the Laser Full Rig – great results across many classes! The Keel winter Series has been interrupted by inclement weather, ranging from no wind to a gale warning, although we managed to complete it by the end of August. The Dinghy Winter Series had a little better luck with the weather only interrupting one race day. The winter months saw a couple of seminars delivered for members with North Sails presenting their approach
to sail care in July. This was well received by 67 members who were able to share vision from the America’s Cup and how the latest technology is used in sail making – a very informative seminar! The second seminar was presented by Todd Giraudo, the mastermind behind competition sailboat, Kraken. Todd, along with his doublehanded crew David White, is preparing to compete in the Double Handed Melbourne to Osaka race in March next year. This voyage of 5,500 miles will take about 35 days and will be a first for a Hillarys Yacht Club Member. Todd’s presentation recounted his meticulous planning involved in participating in such a voyage including the fuel carried to power all of the electronics and the food to power the two crew. We wish the Kraken crew well on their next adventure!
Tackers Come & Try Day Now in its second year, HYC will again be at the Hillarys Marina on the morning of Saturday 9th September. Already with 50 children aged between 6-12 years enrolled online to participate, we anticipate this number to double, making the coloured sails spectacle very popular. There is still time to enroll your child in this free event – visit www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au or enroll on the day!
Junior Offshore Fishing Clinic Already a popular day for Juniors, this new format will expand the skills of 14-18 year olds with an all-day deep sea fishing trip! Participants will gain a great deal of assistance, tips and tricks from experienced and knowledgeable Angling members. The Offshore Fishing Clinic is open to all 14-18 year olds and will be held on Saturday 9th September. To register, please contact the Club on 9246 2833.

DIVE
Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm
Once again the Dive Section embarked on an overseas trip, this time to Komodo on the live aboard boat, Indo Siren. There were 16 crew to cater to the needs of 15 divers. The trip was organised by Troy from Perth Diving Academy, Hillarys and I thank him for his input and help both before and during the adventure. We dived some of the most pristine dive sites in Indonesia's protected waters of the Flores Sea and Indian Ocean around Komodo. Water temperature was consistently around 28deg, allowing diving in rashies and board shorts. From high speed drift dives at the appropriately named "Shotgun" to spectacular reef dives and night dives, all our boxes were ticked. The volume, variety and health of the sea life was very encouraging. The fish, turtles, manta rays and moray eels were unconcerned by human presence while the sharks tended to keep their distance. They really don't like bubbles.

Other members of the dive section embarked on adventures in Spain, Fiji and Nusa Lembongan (Indonesia). All returned with tales of clear water, warm sunshine and weight gain. Meanwhile, in the chilly waters of Hillarys Marina, the dive section members dived to retrieve fallen weights from moorings. You may have noticed us as divers searched for and secured weights on the silty bottom which were then winched onto trolleys, cleaned and stored for reuse. Our next retrieval date is scheduled for 2 September, so bear with us as we temporarily crowd a jetty and make a mess. Brian Meade

DINGHY
A highlight of each year was again our annual Presentation evening in May which was well attended by sailors, family, volunteers and supporters to celebrate another enjoyable year for our Dinghy Division. Awards included Club Championships and Consistency for the Summer Series, the Winter Series 2016, plus individual awards for both sailing and on-shore endeavours. The Winter Series 2017 race days has again had a good number participating, which is pleasing considering the weather on some days. It shows that it is always worth the effort to come to HYC to check if it is suitable to go for sail, to see sailing friends, and enjoy some hot food from the Snack Shack. On some of the Saturdays between our Winter Series race days, some sailors have been taking part in the Winter Series of other Clubs. We have also been conducting training and practice days. Our annual calendar of activities is in our Handbook which is available on the HYC web site in the Dinghies

page, from September each year, and once again we have endeavoured to ensure we have a variety of enjoyable sailing, social and related activities for people of all ages, both male and female, for our healthy outdoors lifestyle. In September, all Dinghy and Keel fleets, plus some visiting boats, are looking forward to again taking part in the enjoyable Bart’s Bash race which is HYC’s part of the “World’s Largest Sailing Event”. Also in September we have some training and associated activities to prepare for the Summer events which start with the Club Opening Day in October. Preparations and training are also taking place for many sailing events away from our Club, including National Championships of all our Classes during the Xmas period. We wish all those taking part in these events the best of luck, and look forward to seeing everyone back at HYC. Greg Jennings, Dinghy Captain.

KEELBOAT RACING
UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm 17 Sept: Bart’s Bash 29 Sept: Cocktail Party 8 Oct: Opening Day
Zinfandel, Xtreme, Mulberry and Farrouk set sail
Winter Series It has been a winter of contrasting weather conditions that challenged and frustrated sailors as they faced variable light winds, strong winds and the extreme, causing cancellation of races. Still the interest did not wane with good-sized fleets highlighted by 20 boats for the first winter race on a glorious June day. With just three races completed thus far, Hard Evidence has scored two easy wins (and a fastest) to be leading division one with Sandrine and Seachange close behind on points. Dart Vader has shown she is fast with she and Surfer Rosa both recording a fastest time in the series. In division two Covert Operation, Helga and Xtreme are just behind consistent performer Show Me. The HYC Youth Squad on Xtreme continue to impress, battling it out with Covert Operation for fastest time on exactly the same kind of yacht, an M27. Zinfandel is never far off the pace with a win and also a second fastest in the first race. Greg Hill has brought his UFO 34, Not Negotiable from the river for racing at Hillarys and has been very competitive with a third on handicap to go with his third fastest on the day. Welcome, Greg! Chris Kelly is promoting Women on Water sailing Pandora with a female crew very successfully in division three and leads the series from Catabatic, which is usually the fastest and Sensei.
Annual General Meeting At the Annual General Meeting the Commodore Simon Davenport praised the success of the Keelboat section, and in particular Mulberry and her experienced crew, for their second placing in the Dirk Hartog Ocean Classic and Kraken’s second placing in the Fremantle to Bali race. Very deservedly, Gary Illing was named Club Person of the Year for his contribution as handicapper and as a consultant to the company that runs the software Finishing Line. Gary has assisted the Dinghy section with the adoption of Finishing Line and also driven the start boat for them. Well done Gary, we really appreciate your efforts.
Melbourne to Osaka Todd Giraudo and Dubbo White are now preparing Kraken for the Melbourne to Hobart race and the Melbourne to Osaka (Japan) race in the double-handed division. Todd gave a very informative talk to members and visitors on the yacht, its equipment, sail wardrobe and provision of water, food and power. The Jeanneau Sunfast 3600 is one of the smallest yachts in the anticipated fleet of twenty and all the experience gained in sailing all the offshore classic races off WA will be called upon as Todd and Dubbo embark on this great adventure.

CRUISING IN COMPANY Lawn Bowls On Sunday, 9th July CiC members played Lawn Bowls in brilliant sunshine at the Osborne Park Bowling Club. This was followed by lunch at the nearby Amaretto Café. Many thanks go to Sue & John Bird for their organisation of an enjoyable land based winter activity.
Talks & Seminars At the August CiC meeting Nick Cox gave an interesting talk, “Escape from Pepela’’ about the adventure of sailing home (Fremantle) from Roti Island, Indonesia on a 34ft cruising yacht ‘’Freya’’. Nick emphasised the importance of safety, preparation for the voyage of the yacht, it’s equipment, the provisions for catering, the experience of the skipper and the crew.
Burns Beach Cruise On 18 June 2017 we began the season of winter “Land Cruises”. Our first event was a journey to Burns Beach Café. We try to arrive in all ways possible, walking, running, cycling, even motor cycle or car for those over 70 or injured during the cruising season. We gathered at about 09:15hrs to start with a coffee or tea “heartstarter”, followed by a vast menu of different dishes to suit the different palates. The main idea of winter cruising is to stay in contact over the long winter break from sailing. We have a th

We finally got the message time was up when the lunch crowd started arriving. 22 cruisers attended to make the morning lively and enjoyable with lots of table rotations going on to catch up with more people. The weather looked threatening but stayed away until we arrived home. The day set the scene for more fun activities to engage in over the winter break.

Recfishwest Position on Mandatory Wearing of Life Jackets on Boats Press Release, July 4, 2017 Currently, the WA Department of Transport is conducting a review of recreational boating safety requirements and the public have been asked to put their views forward during the consultation period. Safety equipment items under review include: • lifejackets; • distress signals – EPIRBs, PLBs and flares; • radios and distress signalling sheets; • compasses and GPSs; • fire extinguishers; and, • miscellaneous equipment (first aid, lighting, paddles, bilge pumps, anchors). Recfishwest is a key stakeholder and is represented on the Department of Transport’s External Reference Group which provides input from all the relevant water using sectors, including recreational fishing. One topic that is being widely discussed is the consideration for the mandatory wearing of life jackets on recreational vessels. Please see below our position on the issue of the mandatory wearing of life jackets on recreational vessels: • We encourage and promote safe fishing experiences for all and equip fishers with the knowledge so they can make their own decision to fish or not to fish (as we do for rock fishing), and we believe this needs to be applied to vessel safety • We support increased education campaigns towards
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
vessel owners, of the risks associated with their safety, it’s important that people have good knowledge to make their own informed decisions in specific situations • We do not support a blanket approach to make the wearing of life jackets on a boat mandatory – Fishing in WA offers a large variety of boat and kayak fishing opportunities and simply having one strict rule covering all those situations is not something we support – Where there’s evidence and statistics to support the wearing of life jackets in high-risk situations such as boat fishing at night or by yourself, like some other states, we would consider this approach instead – We believe safety comes down to the individual and personal responsibility is the key factor • We believe educating boat fishers on the advancement of life jacket technology is important. There are some great slim fitting, compact life jackets that are designed to be worn on the market now, and for a really reasonable price. Educating the boating public and empowering them to make their own choices is a better approach than making it compulsory Recfishwest works hard to promote safety and we want to see all fishers return home safe at the end of a day’s fishing.

MARINA FACILITIES
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Monday of the Month at 7.30pm
With winter receding and spring approaching it is time for regular inspections and undertaking preventative maintenance on your vessel to reduce long-term issues or damage during unpredictable weather in the coming months. Your inspections should include: • Ropes – Replace/Report if frayed including shackles and other mooring fittings • Weights – Report if missing or shackles are damaged • Battery Chargers – Check regularly and comply with Section 8 of the HYC Bylaws • Bilge Pumps – Check that they are working and the bilge is free of contaminants • Ventilation – Make sure it is adequate to avoid rot and mildew • Shore Power Leads – Check for any damage and that it is clear of the water line While members have starte to visit their vessels more often and return items removed over winter, it is important to reduce the possibility of opportunistic theft of valuables and boating accessories. While CCTV is in place at HYC the identity of the offenders is challenging during the hours of darkness, so follow the principles of the crime prevention initiative of Look, Lock and Leave. The clutter around finger jetties and access ways is increasing with many items becoming a trip hazard. Remember that Emergency Services or HYC Representatives may need to attend to an emergency situation at any time and these items are likely to impede a quick response. Your cooperation is sought to remove and stow these items on board your vessel or take them home for storage. The annual tagging of shore power leads has commenced and you are reminded that all non compliant shore power leads found connected to shore power outlets WILL BE REMOVED and available for collection from the office. If you have
fridges, freezers or other equipment connected to the shore power then please make the changes to comply as your non compliance will make the club NOT responsible for any loss of perishables or other issues arising from the removal of the non compliant shore power leads. If compliant shore power leads are found to be damaged or weathered making them noncompliant you will be advised to repair/replace the shore power lead within 7 days after which time the club will replace the lead and charge the cost to the pen occupant. Non-conforming shore power leads and damaged or loose electrical fittings can also be the cause of electrolysis that can severely damage your vessel and nearby vessels. HYC highly recommends the fitting of Galvanic Isolators to prevent this damage from occurring. Tony Sheehan retired following the AGM in August 2017 after spending the past 17-plus years as a member of the Marina Facilities Committee. On behalf of the Committee and the numerous boat owners who have had the pleasure of Tony inspecting their vessels, we wish Tony all the best on his retirement. He will no doubt still make his point known during the times he will be visiting the club, in between his love of caravanning throughout the outback. Finally, it gives me great pleasure to hand the reins over to Rear Commodore Rob Gillespie who will continue the arduous tasks and challenges made more difficult with an aging infrastructure and the mounting pressure of increases in costs of materials and labour.

POWER The winter has seen very little power boating and the Power Section has had no formal on-water activities since the last Compass report. The only section wide trip was our weekend foray to Kerry and Maree Lewis's farm - Wintercreek. We started by gathering fallen branches and other timber to add to the already huge bonfire pile. This was, of course, made a little more difficult by our overwhelming need to stay hydrated - my excuse anyway! Despite the somewhat damp conditions, the lighting of the fire went well and we very quickly had a good source of warmth to accompany the snacks and nibbles.
Bernie toasting - in more ways than one!
Berni decided that she had to have toasted marshmallows - we found her a long multi-branched stick and, even though getting within 10 feet of the fire was, by now, fraught with danger, she managed to toast several marshmallows before being driven to abandon the project by the increasing heat output. As night fell and the rain started in earnest we retired
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm to the magnificent patio where we cooked and ate a BBQ - all whilst staying hydrated of course. After being woken at some ungodly hour by the kookaburras we breakfasted and then the gentlemen of the party - avoiding the clearing up - had to go and ‘rescue’ one of Kerry’s steers which had managed to get itself stuck in the next door property. Mission successfully completed, we took our leave and made our way home. A huge thanks to Kerry and Maree for allowing us to use their beautiful home and for all the work they did to make us comfortable! We have spent some time planning events for next season - boat trips and otherwise. One of the highlights of the spring should be the Pirate Raid which will be happening in November - watch for the details. It should be a great night! The off-season has seen many of the section regulars heading off on trips and holidays partially at least to avoid the cold, damp conditions of which we seem to have seen more than our share for the last couple of months. We have received reports from some of our members who are away - Bob and Robin Mason who have spent the winter up north sent details of their twilight cruising many places between Darwin and Broome - together with photos. I like the one below - it looks warm and sunny. This is my last compass report as Rear Commodore of the Power Section. By the time you read this Leigh Clifton will have taken over the reins and it only remains for me to wish him all the very best in his new role and hope that he has as much pleasure and satisfaction as I have in the position and that he enjoys as much support from the Power Boat Section. ARE YOU GETTING THE LATEST IN
TYRE TECHNOLOGY?
Not all tyres are the same. They look similar but there is a massive difference in technology and that matters. Technology makes a great difference to safety, stability, strength, performance and value for money. You can work out whether a tyre has the latest tyre technology by looking at 3 areas: TREAD
CARCASS
the depth and design
COMPOUND
the materials used
the way the tyre is built
Tyres, like shoes, must suit the places you want to go. Pick the right tyre tread to suit your application and have the latest features for performance.
Like a house’s foundation, you need a strong carcass for the construction that goes on top. Do your tyres have a high tensile construction?
Quality of plastics can differ greatly, some are brittle while others are strong and flexible. It’s the same in a tyre’s compound. Make sure your tyres contain chemically-coupled silica.
Come and see the experienced team who will help you choose tyres with the latest technology.
