COMMODORE’S REPORT
Hello and welcome to another sizzling summer at HYC.
and witty moments in the Management team. My wife Natalie and myself are thoroughly enjoying our new involvement with kindred yacht clubs visiting several in the past few months for various events. As proud representatives of HYC we have been made to feel incredibly welcome on every occasion, typical of the long tradition of friendship and support amongst yacht clubs. Whilst some of these clubs have 100’s of years of history, HYC is only approaching its 30th year and whilst ours is short in terms of time, a common thread of comment from the people we have met, is how impressive our short history is. Our club as it stands is testament to the many dedicated members and volunteers who have played such an important role in shaping that history. Today they can be assured we plan on growing their legacy and are clearly focused on building an even brighter future.
This is my first opportunity after stepping into the role of Commodore to thank you for electing and endorsing your new Executive, Management and section committees for 2015 /2016. Congratulations to those whom take up those positions. I look forward to working with the new faces in the team and wish them every success representing their sections. We say goodbye to retiring Rear Commodores Judy O’Brien - Diving and Ian McCall – Angling and in doing so sincerely thank them for their huge commitment to managing their sections over the last few years. It has been an immense pleasure to have worked with them. Neil Harrison also moves on from RC Sailing and steps up to Vice Commodore along side Barry Jewson. My first report as Commodore also allows me, on behalf of the club the opportunity to formally thank Commodore Chris Grant for his leadership, guidance and wisdom in overseeing the best interests of our membership over the last two years. We will miss his many entertaining
HYC DISCOVER SAILING On the 1st of November we as a club participated in YA’s “Discover Sailing Day” for which HYC is one of the best performing clubs in Australia. The program is simply designed to introduce people to sailing. It brings out the best in our club with over 50 members giving up their Sunday morning and volunteering for this major event. Nearly 300 people visited the club to discover what sailing is all about. The day was superbly run and many visitors were so impressed with what was on

MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHEON I was fortunate enough to be one of the over 300 members and guests who arrived in their finest for the HYC Melbourne Cup Luncheon to be welcomed with a complimentary glass of sparking wine and an impressively decorated Harbour room. After enjoying a few drinks, it didn’t take long for some guests to become experts on ‘the race that stops the nation’. The room was a buzz and there was an air of excitement. The band was quick to capitalise on this and had the ladies grooving on the dance floor within seconds of the race finishing. Soon enough some brave men graced the floor with their unique rhythm and style. The food and service was superb as would be expected and the day was another remarkable success. Many of us danced the afternoon away. As usual our wonderful staff had great difficultly in “moving on” some of the partygoers

when it was time to go home. Congratulations to the winners of best dressed and best hat. Thanks to the ladies of The Tuesday Group who ran the Sweep Stake so well and to the Power Section for running the wine and chocolate raffle. Big tip- get in early for next year !!!
SAILING SEASON OPENING DAY Albeit the AFL Grand Final weekend, good numbers of members saw the 2015/2016 sailing season get underway on the 4th of October with the traditional formal opening and the firing of the canon. This was followed by with the Sail Past and several boats making a big effort to dress their boats in the events theme “Outer Space”, the best dressed boat award going to Seachange. We look forward to seeing more Power boats in the sail past next year. The Commodores Cup lived up to the spectacle it is and several visiting dignitaries and members viewed the racing from the Members Bar, a great vantage point to watch the yachts and dinghies compete and jostle for position on the start line. Congratulations to all the winners.
JUNIORS I have had the pleasure of being involved with our junior sailing for several years now and I am continually impressed with their willingness and their passion to brave the sometimes intimidating conditions that frequent our sailing area. Developing sea awareness and sailing skills in our juniors is not only a commitment bestowed upon us simply because we are a yacht club but also an obligation given we are the most significant facility along the northern corridor capable of providing this valuable community service. With this in mind, we are about to embark upon another initiative with the TACKERS program, which we hope to see children aged 6 onwards come and try sailing. Tackers is sailings version of what Auskick is to the AFL. The Angling section is also very busy developing and expanding their Junior program. Both Natalie and myself were pleasantly surprised at the recent Annual Angling Presentation Night with the extent of junior involvement and by just how well the juniors conducted themselves in the company of other members of all ages. With summer here, I sincerely hope all of our members are taking advantage of the club and its premier ocean and marina views, sensational food and atmosphere. One of the many notable improvements to the social and dining experience at HYC is the recent upgrade to the Wet Bar including a large expanse of artificial lawn, the enclosing of the roof, improvements to the glass paneling to tame the sea breeze and a new and expanded menu. Make sure you take the time to enjoy this new setting – watch out for the Pop Up BBQ nights – already a great success!!! As a final note, I ask all members to actively participate in the clubs sporting or social scene and share the HYC experience with your friends and colleagues. Hope to see you around the club

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT
The summer season is well underway and activity around the Club has certainly jumped a level or ‘three’. It’s great to see members enjoying all that the Club has to offer. On water, off water, in and around the Clubhouse. The capital improvements and continuing maintenance program around the Club undertaken prior to Opening Day and since have been welcomed and being well utilised. The members restaurant and lounge area, the adjacent stairwell, the outdoor wet bar development all positive. The Pop Up Bar and BBQ events in the wet bar have been well attended. We are working to improve these events at each occasion. The recent harbour fireworks saw a full Clubhouse and a very full car park, a great sight to see. Our October Club promotion and membership drive combined well with Discover Sailing Day attracting many new and interested people wanting to see what the Club is all about. Culminating in an additional 67 new members joining the Club, the initiative again proved positive and bettered previous year numbers. Please welcome these new members when meeting them and help them feel at ease around the Club, introducing them and assisting their enjoyment of all the facilities we have to offer.
TRANSITIONAL MEMBERSHIP At the AGM this year we introduced a new category of ‘Transitional’ membership. This category allows younger families and individuals, below 30 years of age, who may not be fully capable of affording full ‘Ordinary’ membership at the time, to spread their joining and membership fees over 5 years. This is a very attractive opportunity for those meeting the age to become members and begin enjoying all that the Club offers.
battery refuse station located just inside the boatlifting facility. This is not the first time a situation like this has occurred. It often occurs when engine oils have been replaced and are being removed to the oil refuse station and the leaking oils damage the jetties and grass areas. It is paramount when removing any liquids from vessels that it is done in a safe and proper manner. Let’s hope we don’t shave this happen again.

VESSEL MAINTENANCE & SAFETY
BOB JANE T-MARTS
A recent maintenance issue onboard a vessel had its batteries ‘explode’ causing engine room damage and significant cleaning required, caused by the battery acid. Thankfully no one was near the batteries as it happened. Unfortunately though, in removing the damaged batteries and acid from the vessel, significant leakage took place, causing even further damage to our jetties and grounds.
Tony Hammersley
These photos clearly show the damage which can be caused when not containing liquids properly. In this case the battery acid has leaked all the way to the

Bart’s Bash 2015
We did it for Bart
On Sunday 20th of September, a Guinness World Record was set for the Largest Sailing Race in 24 hours for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. The event titled “Bart’s Bash” is held annually in memory of Andrew “Bart” Simpson, a gold medal Olympian who died tragically following a training accident in 2013. The “Bart’s Bash” event is a sailing event run by individual sailing clubs around the world in order to raise money for the charity and this year a monumental 13,000 participants of all ages and abilities sailed in this years event. The money raised from the event goes into the encouragement of young people to take up the sport. From the Abu Dhabi Sailing Club to the Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club and 465 venues in between, covering 62 countries, 9165 participants sailed in the Bart’s Bash Race.
Hillarys Yacht Club flew the flag not only for WA where a fleet of 35 boats took to the water but they were probably the largest fleet across Australia. Sailing to set a Guinness World Record for the largest fleet in a race and to fundraise for the Andrew (Bart) Simpson Foundation, the HYC yachts included keel boats, tasars, lasers, 125s, optimists, an aero and 3 yachts from the TS Marmion cadet unit. Globally, the Bart’s Bash event has so far raised over $155,000 for the Andrew Simpson Foundation and sailed over 36,000km. The event was not only to remember Andrew Simpson but to celebrate a great love for sailing across the world.

OPENING DAY Outer Space was the theme and outer space it was! We were blessed with glorious sunshine as the day proceeded with the customary formalities of the opening ceremony marking the opening of the 2015/2016 sailing season. This year welcomed our new Commodore Simon Davenport who proudly introduced our new Vice Commodore Neil Harrison, Rear Commodore of Angling Bill McPherson, Rear Commodore of Dive James Leesue and Rear Commodore of Sailing Brett Bailey who were all presented with their Hillarys Yacht Club burgee’s. Celebrations continued with the dinghy demonstration, colourful sail past and Commodore’s Cup race. This year the kids, young and old, were entertained with oversized board games providing hours of fun and a face painter to decorate the young faces of the club. The time and effort put in by our staff, volunteers and members creates a relaxed atmosphere here at Hillarys Yacht Club which brings people back year after year. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage more families to join in our event emphasising that this it not just an event for our sailors. We want all the family to come along and enjoy the day.
COME AND TRY MONTH For the first time Hillarys Yacht Club opened its doors to the local community welcoming them to come down to the Club and see what we have to offer. Bruce Ellery
Bruce recently celebrated his 61st birthday with a quiet drink on the club balcony watching the sun set on a warm spring evening with his partner Gabriele. He joined HYC in 2011.
Family Background Bruce came to Perth in 1976 from the land of the long white cloud at the age of 21. He has two children, a son Casey 36 and a daughter Kimberley 32. Charlotte is his daughter-in-law with grandchildren Danika 8 and Jay who is 5.
Occupation For the past 8 years Bruce has been running a Polish Concrete business (but not from Poland); it is a hard graft but results can be satisfying. For more than 20 years Bruce worked in logistics, distributing petroleum & gas throughout the western zone of NT, WA and SA for Shell. In the late 70’s Bruce lived with his family in a caravan throughout northern Australia, working on numerous projects. These were great times living like a gypsy, no TV and at times lucky if you could pick up ABC radio. Developed some great relationships along the way.
Yachts Initially Bruce and Gaby crewed on Murphy’s Law before he caught the bug. Bruce’s desire to sail off over the horizon one day and some advice from experienced sailing friends within the club led to the purchase of his first and current yacht Show Me, formerly Banzai (Club Champion 2006/07 Des Riley). He is enjoying learning some sailing skills, growing in confidence with new experiences with a view to securing a yacht to fulfil his future dreams.
a first class club and facility. Being part of the Sailing Section there is a progressive team environment presenting opportunities in which we are encouraged to get involved and get the most from them. Bruce and Gaby both enjoy the relaxed social camaraderie after each race.
Regrets Bruce regrets he is guilty of yelling at his crew occasionally during a race [he wouldn’t be the first or last to do so!]. Whilst he enjoys the sailing, at times he misses being in the water as opposed to being on the water-maybe time to try dinghy sailing!
Achievements and Awards Firstly being accepted as a token Aussie after 39 years residence, however Bruce still supports the dark side from across the ditch in any trans-Tasman sports, including the recent Rugby World Cup! Most Improved Boat Award in Keel Division 2014/15.
Special Events Bruce sailed and kite-surfed the fjords in Patagonia off the back of a 15m Lagoon catamaran, tangled his kite in a lone tree in a remote bay in Mauritius and crewed on Haywire in the Fremantle-Albany return race this year where he discovered the advantages and disadvantages of a water activated PFD!
HYC Perspective As a relative newcomer Bruce appreciates the hard work of past and current members enabling all to enjoy

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
The 2015/16 season is well under way. Our Keel Division is experiencing growth in the numbers of boats sailing and the numbers of crew participation. The presentations are becoming livelier after each race. The standard of the racing and crew work is also improving each week. The extra numbers of crew on each boat is also helping with the performance. Our Dinghy section numbers have been reduced due to exams and injuries. We do expect the numbers to grow again over the summer months. New bronze Optimist sailors are being encouraged to join the fleet to help grow the numbers again.
COACHES CORNER
Training in the October School holidays was very good with 20 young sailors enjoying the week long activities. Several new laser sailors joined the club. We are also grateful to Taylor Townsend’s father Graham for the assistance in providing 3 new laser trolleys. During the training courses we have had the advantage of using HYC Club dinghy members to assist and buddy the new sailors. This has proved invaluable over the years. This has also been very useful when attending State and National Championships. Over 40 ladies crewed on the 22 boats in the Hillarys Fremantle Ocean Race. The photograph was taken at the ladies celebrations following their arrival. We will continue to identify activities to promote WOMEN ON WATER.
SAIL TRIM We have recently been requested to share the secrets of Sail Trim. Firstly let us start with the tools. Can we adjust the Luff, foot, backstay to ensure the correct adjustments? A seminar at HYC has been organised to assist the process. Please bring your crew SAIL TRIM SEMINAR WITH NORTH SAILS’ NICK DAVIS February 8th 2016 7 - 8.30pm

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
DISCOVER SAILING DAY Hillarys Yacht Club continues to use this day to promote our club, provide sailing opportunities and increase our club membership. 340 attended on the day. Assisting the visitors was signage on the streets surrounding the club to encourage their arrival. 60 club members volunteered their time to assist in the direction of the Discover Sailing participants and taking the 17 Keel and CIC yachts and 15 Dinghies out for the Discover Sailing experience.
This year all goals were achieved and more importantly was the general interest in all of the sections. These included Angling, Dive, SUP, Dinghies, Keel and Twilight sailing. It is our intention to follow up these opportunities. There is a terrific opportunity to encourage new members into the sections and then to grow the use of the facilities. Our membership did grow on the day with over 60 new families joining the Club. Next year we will continue this worthwhile activity on Sunday 6th of November 2016.

ANGLING
AUGUST BOAT COMPETITION In perfect weather, 12 anglers took to the water hoping the fish were as plentiful as reports in the media had suggested. THEY WEREN’T as at the end of the day, only 6 species were recorded, with skippy and whiting the most caught. Junior winner with 2 species was Ryan McDiarmid (28.048 points), from Lucas Pohl, 1 Specie (17.270) points. Lady winner was Julie Loran, 2 species (26.056 points) from Ruby McGrady, 1 specie (17.268 points) Winner of the men’s section was Allan McDiarmid with 3 species (42.120 points) from Dennis Loran, also 3 species (36.650 points).
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm
special thanks go to the Club for its promotion and support for the event which is now planned to be an annual event with the 2016 competition to be on 26th August 2016. It is hoped that other sections of the club enter teams next year making this a special inter-section event.
SEPTEMBER BOAT COMPETITION At last, weather forecasts meant no postponement of the competition and 19 anglers signed on with little wind and a promising forecast. However, once again, the weather man was wrong and seas became very choppy by 11.00 causing some boats to call it a day. At the weigh in, some nice fish were weighed in with 8 species recorded.
Ian McCall was the lucky winner of the chocolate wheel spin with his 179g whiting.
Junior winner was Jake Speed with 6 species and 70.640 points, from Lucas Pohl with 3 species and 36.700 points.
2015 TEAM FISH COMPETITION
Lady winner was Ruby McGrady with 4 species and 46.918 points
Gazetted for Saturday 22nd August, the team fish was postponed to Sunday due to stormy weather on the Saturday. With calm seas in the morning, 10 teams one juniors team, 4 mens teams and 5 mixed teams ventured out at 6.30am. All returned safely in choppy seas for the 4.00pm weigh in. Catches were quite disappointing with only 7 species represented at the weigh in. Overall winners were the Dreamcatchers mixed team skippered by Dennis Loran with 5 species and a total of 60.434 points. Second overall was another mixed team, The Partridges, skippered by Allan Partridge who also had 5 species and 59.068 points. Winner of the men’s section was the team skippered by Kyle Weller who had 4 species ( 47.448 points). This was the first Team Fish for some years, and
20 Compass December 2015 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc
Winner of the men’s section was Frank Pierucci with 7 species and 84.104 points from Greg Mansell, 4 species 46.404 points. Heaviest of species prizes were given to juniors Aiden Riney, Jake Speed and Lucas Pohl with the juniors again showing all how to catch the big ones.
HOLIDAY FISHING CLINIC for JUNIOR ANGLERS Hot, still weather conditions greeted the 24 juniors enrolled for the holiday fishing clinic. Tuesday was spent familiarising the keen students with the equipment and safety rules to be used and followed while at sea on the next two days. Wednesday’s weather was perfect with plenty of fish caught and the bonus of whale sightings by both boats.
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
All were excited for the competition on Thursday and they were not disappointed with six species caught and weighed in. Overall winner was Robert Ross with four species which included the heaviest flathead at 773grams. Heaviest of species awards were given to: •
King George whiting (727g) Henry Miller
•
Sand whiting (205g) James Wilmot
•
Herring (195g) Khye Gomez
•
Skippy (172g) Jack Sarich and Will Johnston
•
Pike ( 230g) Luke Miller
Overall, all the Angling Section volunteers declared this to be one of the best clinics held considering the weather and conduct of the participants. Thanks to all the volunteers and to Mel Harvey for the organisation.
OCTOBER BOAT COMPETITION On the competition day, 18th October, North Westerly winds were gusting to 25 knots forcing postponement until 25th October, when 19 anglers signed on and began in choppy conditions with a strong south easterly blowing, but a moderating forecast. For the two hours prior to the sea breeze commencing around 12.00, conditions were excellent, however, the fish were not cooperating and so, at the weigh in, only 8 species were weighed in. Junior winner with 4 species was Jake Speed (46.314 points) from Aiden Riney, 4 species (45.656 points). Lady winner was Ruby McGrady with 3 species (35.480 points) from Julie Loran, 1 specie (17.322 points).

DIVE
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm
Just prior to the opening of the official dive season , dive section volunteers retrieved 31 weights that had dropped off springer ropes from vessels penned in the marina. This is one way in which the dive section is able to help the club as well as earn some money for the dive section. Without these volunteers the club would need to go to an outside contractor to retrieve these weights. This also allows section divers to practise navigation skills in limited visibility under the finger jetties. The official diving season opened with the opening of the recreational cray fishing season on the Thursday the 15th October. Seven intrepid divers braved windy and swell conditions to catch the first crays of the season. All up 7 crayfish came back to shore. However as the conditions were not improving, the balance of the day was cancelled. Four dive section members [Michael and Judy O`Brien and James and Alana Leesue] then headed off to Lembongan, Indonesia, for some tropical diving and a great time was had by all. Thank you very much to Michael and Judy for organizing the accommodation which had magnificent views looking back to Bali and across to a giant volcano, which happily behaved itself while we were there.
which helped the digestion no end. The current Perth weather has not been conducive to good diving, however dives have continued with Balaton Jack and private boats in use. While we were in Lembongan, Andy Cassidy and Paul Manuel had an exciting interaction with a 3 meter white shark at the Geordie caves. Thank goodness for shark shields and tight wetsuits. The crayfish are plentiful on local Marmion reefs and strangely all have not shed their carapaces as yet and some even have barnacles starting to grow. The white run has not started as yet. The try October promotion looks to have been successful for the section as we welcome 6 new divers into the club. Any members that wish to have a dive with the section please feel free to contact myself, Andy Cassidy, our dive captain or Craig Burkett, who is our dive planner. Happy diving! â– James Leesue Rear Commodore
The diving was fantastic and with the gentle conditions together with very attentive Dive Masters, my wife, Alana, who is a new diver, found her Mojo very quickly and gained valuable experience. So much so that on our return to Perth she was out in front on our next dive pointing out crayfish for me to catch. The people on Lembongan were very helpful and even provided a taxi service free of charge to and from their restaurants,

CRUISING IN COMPANY
nd
Dec 12/13 - CIC cruise to Freo Possible Croatian cruise in 2016
With the winter season a distant memory now, the CIC activity on the water is hotting up in line with the Perth temperatures. New on the agenda and with mounting support, has been the “Crew on someone else’s boat” day. The first of these was held in September with 4 vessels participating, each with an assortment of crew. 6 vessels participated at the next event in October. On both occasions, fine conditions contributed to a relaxing sail which was followed by lunch and beverages at the wet bar. These sessions have provided a great opportunity to experience different vessels, swap notes and learn some new skills, like helming at a wheel versus a tiller. A number of CIC members volunteered their boats to take prospective members out on the water for the “Discover Sailing Day”. An overall success with 50 new members joining HYC on the day. On a more competitive note, the “Cruiser cup”, which has become a regular event in the calendar and has grown in support, was
won by Sana II consecutively in October and November. CIC have hosted a number of interesting talks over the last few months. These have included presentations by Geoff & Rita James on their sailing and cycling tour in the Netherlands and Steve & Selena Steddy, who cruised/ dived in the Marshall Islands and Bikini Atoll. We would like to welcome Carol and Steve Braack to HYC and look forward to seeing their vessel, “Rebecca Rose”, out on the water. As always with the summer months ahead a number of cruises are in the calendar, and we look forward to sharing the usual relaxation and camaraderie with the other cruisers over the weeks to come. Our new CIC captains, John and Sue Bird, have brought their own sense of panache to the CIC group, and will kindly be hosting the CIC Christmas Party at their place on Sat Dec 5th. ■ Robert & Fran Pagnacco

Dec 19 - Family Fun Day Jan 16 - COW Rock Race
The Winter Series race days were completed in fine weather and celebrated with a BBQ. There was a great response to the training days which were conducted on the alternate Saturdays to the race days. The Barts Bash event in September had ideal weather, was well supported and enjoyed. In late September, three of our Tasar dinghies took part in their Australian Championships in Townsville, Queensland, in a 61 boat fleet. Nick & Graeme Willis won the Junior Helm. Four of our Optimists took part in the annual WestSail training camp for junior sailors at Rockingham. This was followed by the State Youth Championships. Jackson Porter, the HYC Junior Sports Person of the Year, sailed well in the 119 boat fleet at the Optimist Asian & Oceania Championship in Doha, Qatar, during late October. Great efforts by everyone in very competitive environments. Our Saturday morning sailing has seen a steady increase in participants, as we strive to improve the enjoyment of the activity, including the addition of a

coach who has been well received, especially by new and less experienced sailors. These are some of the activities that Dinghy sailors, families and supporters can be involved with in the next few months, aside from the regular sailing days: •
A Family Fun Day & BBQ on 19 December;
•
The fun and relaxed format of the Cow Rock race in January is a good way to get the sailing started again after the break for Christmas and New Year;
•
Dinghy fleets are proposing to take part in an Australia Day race and celebration, to coincide with the Keel fleet’s race and celebration;
•
We can expect to have the added colour and action of the 125 Class with us for the Pot of Gold regatta in February. ■ Greg Jennings Dinghy Captain

11 Dec - Christmas Dinner The start of the “Power Season” has been a bit mixed. We have had some magnificent weather but also some quite rough seas. The first outing of the new season was our river trip up to East Perth for lunch at The Royal. Unfortunately only a small number attended because of threatened weather but it was thoroughly enjoyed by those who did! We will be repeating this activity later in the season to see if we can get more trailer boats involved and a much larger group of people.

On 6th November the Power Section held a progressive dinner in the clubhouse and on member’s boats. We had 24 attendees who greatly enjoyed the occasion. I don’t think anyone had any space left for drinks and chocolates after the meal – I think they must have evaporated all on their own. A big thank you to all involved in the preparation and execution of the evening.
The Power Section organised the Champagne Raffle for the Melbourne Cup Lunch once again with Leigh and Barry selling lots of tickets and eventually drawing three prizes of Moet and chocolates. I think the lunch was a success enjoyed by those who attended. I hope the raffle was equally enjoyed.
Future activities will include the section Christmas Dinner to be held Friday 11th December in the Meeting Room. We will have the section Beach BBQ in Narrowneck Bay on the afternoon of Saturday 23rd January (Australia Day long weekend) perhaps finishing with a drink or two on the boats. The Power Section Rottnest Mini-Golf Super Challenge will be held on the morning of HYC Rottnest Run – due on 30th April. The section is hoping to reschedule the Pirate Raid to Claremont Yacht Club – watch out for further news. Other activities are in planning – keep an eye on the notice boards and flyers for details. Anyone, be they boaties or not, if you would be interested in attending any of the Power Section activities please contact Barry on 0430 150 301 or Leigh on 0427 191 695. MARINA FACILITIES
As the holiday season approaches skippers not only need to be fully conversant with “safe boating practices” but implement them. Being the skipper makes you responsible for the duty of care of all your passengers, your vessel and other vessels in the vicinity. Some of the key points to remember are: Take care – Be prop aware and make sure passengers do not protrude their legs over the side when the motor is running. Don’t let safety expire – Always check your flares, anchors, life jackets, radios, fire extinguishers and all other safety equipment before each outing Don’t go overboard on alcohol – When you are out in your vessel, the consequences of mixing of excessive alcohol with your boating activity can be fatal. The combination of wind, waves and the sun can all magnify the effects of alcohol and affects

your judgement and skills, so drink responsibly when boating. Remember it is an offence to operate a vessel while affected by alcohol or drugs to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the vessel, Section 59(2) of the Western Australian Marine Act 1982. Stow your lines, cords and hoses – Neatly and don’t have them lying on the jetty walkways as they are a trip hazard-especially at night. Pumping bilges into the marina – Regular inspections of your bilge to ensure that no oil or other contaminants are present before turning on your pump is about protecting the environment and contributing towards a healthy marina. Look-Lock-Leave – also applies to the boating fraternity. A majority of property thefts from vessels are as a result of opportunistic moments that are presented to thieves due to the lack of vigilance. Before you leave look around and within your vessel and secure any valuable items away from prying eyes. Locking valuable equipment away is not only good practice but also reduces the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Before leaving check that your vessel is securely locked and keys not left in obvious places (including in the ignition) where they can be easily found by opportunistic thieves. On behalf of the Marina Facilities Committee Members we wish you all happy holidays and safe boating. ■ Fred Gere Rear Commodore

Division 2 in Marmion Reef Race
Dispensing with Martians, Tardis Box, Star Wars characters, planets, black holes, flags and other Outer Space paraphernalia after the sail-past, twenty eight yachts scrambled out to the start of the Commodore’s Cup on opening day. Racing on a new course for the 15 knot north-westerly the catamarans made the most of it with Sally Malay and Out The Back finishing first and second with Ryan Binedell’s Low Flying Duck third in division one. In division two the Vikings filled four of the top five positions with Volant and Sublime first and second and Covert Operation (an M27) third. It was pleasing to see five cruising yachts turn-out for the division three (JAM) race with Comfortably Numb first ahead of fastest yacht Sana 11 and Minx. The 24 nautical mile race-the Marmion Reef Race, the first of the Ocean Series began in a light northerly that faded and then filled in from the south-west, however in between, the yachts were in complete disarray. Mulberry, with sail-maker and tactician Brent Fowler on board eked out a 9 minute lead over second placed Haywire to finish first and fastest with Murphy’s Law and First Impression filling the minor places in division one. In division two, the “backmarkers”, travelling with the new breeze, hung on to the front-runners and newcomer Mark Taylor on Helga recorded an easy first with Show Me and Pinta picking up pennants too. Farrouk was fastest.
Dart Vader, Perle and Haywire in division one and Farrouk, Covert Operation, Pinta, Xtreme, Pandora and Zinfandel picking up pennants. Chasing the Cruiser Cup this year Sana 11 won both cup races in division three (JAM), however there are still four races to go in this series. The “Come and Try” month of October was a great success and brought a number of would-be sailors to the Club to try their hand at crewing on a number of keelboats before signing up on Discover Sailing Day. Following a suggestion from Clem Rogers, Des Riley is putting together a challenge for the Interclub championship to be sailed on B&Ws next March. With approximately 20 sailors interested it is hoped two full crews will be assembled, skilled and coached by Neil Harrison and Ryan Binedell, initially on Ryan’s Low Flying Duck before training on the river and the actual boats. Good luck to all concerned. ■ John Bird
A favourite series held over 5 races throughout summer, the North Coast Series, pits the wits of HYC sailors against those of Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club who are keen to regain the NCS Trophy held by HYC. Two short races each day challenge the crew to perform slick spinnaker manoeuvres, the outcome of these usually determines the results. So after two days of racing HYC holds a narrow lead on points from ORSSC with close racing from Hard Evidence, Bad Habits and Salamander in division one and Pinta, Covert Operation, HYC Training and Farrouk in division two. The first two consistency races were held in strong winds (with rain in one) with Sally Malay, Hard Evidence,

Windy conditions
challenge yachts
The fastest time going down to Fremantle in the annual HYC to Fremantle yacht race was an hour faster on Saturday than the return journey the next day; reflecting the contrasting wind conditions. Reaching on a strong easterly breeze the catamarans showed a clean pair of rudders to the rest of the fleet with Sally Malay (Ian Walker) first and fastest and however the Beneteau First 35’s, Mulberry (Mark Pitt) and Haywire (Brett Young) recovered to cross the finish line off the South Mole second and third and on handicap as well. Pinta (Kevin Stacey) continued on her winning way in division two but only by 27 seconds from the fastest in the division, Covert Operation (Graham Atkinson) who flew a tiny spinnaker and reached speeds of over 11 knots in finishing nine minutes ahead of third placegetter Pandora (Chris Grant). Catabatic (Rob Bills) was the best of the jib and main fleet (div 3). An accurate forecast for Sunday for the return race
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
of 12 to 15 knots ENE turning to the NW proved to be a testing challenge for all yachts as they tacked all the way back to HYC. This did not suit the catamarans at all and any hope of taking the trophy for best performance over both races was gone with the wind. It did suit a classic racing yacht in Mulberry who was fastest but was pipped on handicap by Salamander (Bruce Bradford) with Perle (John Bird) third. Once again Covert Operation proved she is the fastest yacht in division two but on handicap still lowered her colours to the Viking 30, Blue Chip (Deborah Fisk) and two other Vikings Tropical Itch (Tony Brooke) and Helga (Mark Taylor). Rob Bills in Catabatic completed the double in division three. Overall, Mulberry, Tropical Itch and Catabatic were the trophy winners in their divisions based on the combined place results and fastest corrected time. â– John Bird
