COMMODORE’S REPORT This is my first Commodore’s Report after being elected at the AGM and I am proud and honoured to be Hillarys Yacht Club’s 13th Commodore - lucky for some! My first sense of obligation is to sincerely thank those retiring Flag Officers that have contributed in many ways to the Club since taking on their roles, which is greatly appreciated. They are: Simon Davenport Commodore Barry Jewson Vice Commodore Barry Garrett-Reed Rear Commodore Bill McPherson Rear Commodore I would also like to officially welcome the members of the Executive and Management Teams: Fred Gere Vice Commodore Brett Bailey Vice Commodore Paul Skinner Treasurer Roric Smith Independent Member Garry Cunningham RC Angling James Leesue RC Dive Rob Gillespie RC Marina Facilities Leigh Clifton RC Power Mark Taylor RC Sailing
The Sun rises on the 2017 Harbour Classic
Opening Day Another great day! The weather, early in the week, looked threatening but the sun came out and we had 1015 knot winds for the yachts and dinghies. There was plenty of hype around the Club during the day, partly due to our October ‘Discover Hillarys Yacht Club’ month, an initiative whereby everybody is welcome at HYC. We had excellent feedback from visiting Flag Officers and politicians on how warm and friendly they find the environment at HYC. The highlight was Kraken, a 36 foot yacht, that set sail to Melbourne to compete in the double-handed Melbourne to Osaka race in March 2018 - some 10,000km! All the best to Todd and Dubbo on this epic journey!
Discover Sailing Day at HYC On 22nd October, we participated in the nationwide initiative of Discover Sailing Day and, with the fantastic assistance of 60 volunteers, we were able to take almost 400 people out onto the water in either a keel boat, a dinghy or both! Well done to both the Keel and Dinghy Sections and to the many Flag Officers that made the day a success. Part of this day, as well as the month of October, was to encourage people to join the Club and we ended up signing 50 new members during the month - a great result!
General News There has been so much happening over the last three months at the Club, which means our Members have had plenty of activity choices. We had 70 sailors compete in Bart’s Bash in September Opening Ceremony at the 2017 Opening Day. Photo by John Bird

which was one of the highest participation rates in Australia! Well done to the sailors and to the volunteers for laying the course and recording the times. The Dive Section are in full swing as the water starts to warm up, and one day, I’m sure they will hold a crayfish afternoon at the Club so we can all benefit from their efforts! I’m sure this can be used as a recruitment drive to get more members to participate in this great section. The Angling Section continue to attract good numbers to their events, both in competition and fun, so if you do want to participate, please contact the Rear Commodore of Angling, Garry Cunningham. The Power Section has also been busy, but unfortunately their sunset cruise on the 28th October had to be postponed due to bad weather; disappointing as 90 members and guests had registered! They also organised a very successful Pirate Raid in November where 120 people enjoyed a great buffet and live music, with good partiicpation from the Perth Flying Squadron, who plundered the treasure chest. The Club has also put on a number of “special interest” events over the last two months which has attracted good numbers, both for the events and for dinner beforehand. These were the North Sails Tuning Seminar, the screening of the film “A Plastic Ocean” and the UK Sail Trimming seminar. Well done to Chris Kelly for the organisation of these special events. The improvement program has also been busy in upgrading the Wet Bar with the inclusion of a long wooden bar table and a Mirror sailing dinghy attached to the roof, as well as the establishment of the children’s playground. The old sailing mast hanging from the
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
upstairs restaurant annexe looks fantastic and really adds to the feel of the yacht club. There is always plenty to do at HYC. If you want to get involved, the “Fit Chicks” walkers and the “Fat Boys” cycling group meet every Wednesday at 4pm and are both great ways to meet fellow members. All you need is a pair of walking shoes or a push bike.
Looking forward There are a few pending highlights for the Club coming up, set to put HYC on the National and Global map in late 2017 and throughout 2018. Specifically, we look forward to: • “Kraken” with Todd Giraudo and Dubbo White competing in the Melbourne to Devonport Race at Christmas time. • “Kraken” sailing double-handed to Osaka in March 2018. • HYC Member Kevin Farebrother attempting to summit Mt Everest and fly the HYC burgee from the top of the world! Can’t wait for that photo! And if that wasn’t enough, Kevin will also be competing in the single-handed Golden Globe Race around the world in June, some 50 years after the first race. You can read about Kevin’s adventures in our feature article on pages 8-9. We wish Todd, Dubbo and Kevin all the best in their epic adventures. All the best and see you around the Club. GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT SEASON UNDER WAY Opening Day saw the start of another season of sun, sailing, boating and activity around the Club. The weather and activities provided were welcomed by all those in attendance. Families and their children enjoyed the fun of the day, face painting, gym bus and the animal petting stall. The sailpast, conducted following the ceremonies, was supported well with good participation from members dressing their vessels into the ‘Sea Creatures’ theme of the day. Congratulations to all those having a win on the day, in the sailpast and our dinghy and keel racing events. Congratulations must also go to our Apprentice Chef Sean Woolford who won Hospitality Group Trainings’ award for Most Outstanding Final Year Apprentice. Sean beat chefs from The Breakwater and The Balmoral Hotel in the final cut. Sean is a welcome asset in our galley and restaurant. Well done Sean.
AROUND THE CLUB Our Sunday Sessions in the Wet Bar are well underway. Supported with a variety of affordable food and beverage, live music and happy hour pricing with our Jag the Joker draw at 5.00pm, activity from members and sections has been welcomed. Some further sun shade and wind protection is planned for the area which should be completed leading into Christmas and the New Year.
INISIDE THE CLUB Here is the latest list of members drawn Friday evenings at 7.30pm in the Clubhouse. The drawn member needs to be present to collect the $2,000 Jackpot, not friends of, sisters of, or 5 minutes away by car, they need to be in the building when drawn. Jackpot currently $2000. While transiting the boatlifters yard prior to Opening Day I couldn’t resist catching these two long time members taking cleaning the bottom of their yacht so seriously:
Club operations to date have maintained the positive results of the first three months holding our year to date performance ahead of last year. Hopefully summer activities, restaurant and bar patronage, boatlifting maintenance and good boating weather supporting fuel sales will be strong.

From summit to sea
One man’s quest for a world-first. Hillarys Yacht Club member and adventurer Kevin Farebrother is about to embark on the challenge of a lifetime. No stranger to Mount Everest, Kevin’s plans for 2018 will see him attempt to be the first person to have ever stood on top of the world and sail solo round the world unassisted (using only celestial navigation) in the same 12 months. Having been introduced to the challenge of the Golden Globe Race by a simple text message from a friend that read “This is for you…”, Kevin admits the planning process has been a “whirlwind of emotions involving time, money and sweat – some morning’s it’s on, some it’s off!”. The 2018 Golden Globe Race takes sailors back to ‘the golden age of solo sailing’ and celebrates 50 years since Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s historic 1968/9 world first solo non-stop circumnavigation in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Yacht Race. Entrants in the race are limited to only what Sir Robin had available all those years ago – no computers, GPS, satellite phone, nor water-maker, no outside assistance or aid of modern day shorebased weather routing advice. This means Kevin will be navigating with a sextant on paper charts, without electronic instruments or autopilots. Only occasionally will he be able to communicate with the outside world when long-range high frequency and ham radios allow. The sense of this challenge is not lost on Kevin, “This is a chance of a lifetime to test mind and body to the limit. The challenge is being alone for such a long period with no one to bounce off thoughts and ideas when the going gets tough” he said. Having bought Don McIntyre’s (Founder and Chairman of the race) Tradewind 35 Silver Heels, Kevin’s first task was to sail it back to Perth for its refit. Kevin says “in hindsight, I should have listened to Don and done it all on the Eastern side of Australia”. Officially representing Hillarys Yacht Club in the race, Kevin
8 Compass December 2017 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc
explains this is the extent of his support: “This, for me, is a truly Corinthian entry – I have no sponsor and no team. I’ve done everything myself except making the sails and replacing the rigging. It’s been an interesting journey already from which I’ve learnt lots, but at times it’s also been a frustrating one.” “My refit is definitely on a budget but the more I do, the more I become at one with the boat. I’ve had a leaking bilge which at one point was thought to be coming through a crack in the hull; I’ve had reports that the mast will inevitably fail as it’s the same boat as former entrant Shane Freeman used and he lost his mast when he rolled 400 miles from Cape Horn! But a new mast is out of the question so the dice will be rolled again and I’ll hope for the best.” Kevin is clearly no stranger to huge physical and mental challenges – the former British 23 SAS soldier has already reached the summit of Mount Everest an impressive three times. But whilst Everest may at least be familiar territory, the daunting conditions he will face on the oceans will be a new challenge altogether – “I’m more of a climber than a sailor. The scariest part for me will be the heavy weather, having not really
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
experienced any seriously heavy stuff before. After all, you don’t train for a marathon by running a marathon. No doubt I will get rolled and I can only hope that not much damage is done, but as with anything to do with nature, a slice of luck will always be needed. I’ve learnt that after many years in the mountains”. To put this solo race in perspective, more people summit Everest in just one season than have ever circumnavigated the globe solo and unassisted. “There’s still a long way to go to the start line - holding down a job and getting the boat race-ready are taking its toll, as I’m sure it is for the other contestants, unless they’re being sponsored, although no doubt that comes with a whole other set of pressures.” In a fitting gesture to tie these two epic challenges together, Kevin has renamed Silver Heels to Sagarmatha, the Nepalese name for Everest. In Kevin’s words: “If I’m lucky enough to finish, I can compare the Everest of the land to the Everest of the ocean and see which is truly more testing.” “I think I already know the answer.”
HYC wishes Kevin the very best of luck with his quest. We look forward to following his adventures closely and, with a bit of luck, seeing the HYC burgee flying higher than ever before, on top of Mount Everest!
“The race itself will be an adventure testing mind and body to the limit, which is how I like it. Why do something you’re already good at? Try new things and test what you’re capable of.” Kevin Farebrother

CLUB EVENTS Fathers’ Day Once again, a great turn out for Fathers’ Day showing that our Dads really are appreciated in the Club! For the first time, dinner was our biggest sitting this year which means if this trend continues we will have entertainment all day long next year! Bad “dad jokes” aside, the feedback from Members was very positive and we look forward to an even better Fathers’ Day for 2018.
Opening Day The ‘Sea Creatures’ themed day brought out some fantastic costumes, both on boats and in person, to celebrate the start of the sailing season. The combination of face painting, the GymBus and the entertaining “Critters Up Close” activities proved a huge hit with the kids while adults and VIPs enjoyed live music, free wine tasting and a great spectacle of various interpretations of ‘sea creatures’ costumes in the Sail Past!
Melbourne Cup A sell-out event once more, the ‘day that stops the nation’ certainly delivered in terms of a great day out. In a room full of colour, some 300 members and guests enjoyed a three course meal, an exhilarating race and music by Perth band Shimmer. Congratulations again to Kerry McDonald, Carol Sampson and Sharron Blatch who won 1st, 2nd & 3rd (respectively) raffle prizes whilst the best dressed prizes went to Sue Bordus (Best Dressed Lady & winner of the $200 Living Colour for Hair makeover voucher), Gary Bell (Best Dressed Man) and Jenna Dickson (Best Hat).
Pirate Raid The HYC treasure, last year plundered from Claremont Yacht Club, was lost this year to the Perth Flying Squadron. Making quite the entrance, our visitors were treated to a warm HYC welcome, a sumptuous buffet dinner and entertainment from Perth band Passion Works. Thank you to the chefs and wait staff who deliver such exceptional service on our Club events; to our staff and volunteers who coordinate various aspects behind the scenes and to our Members - without your support, these events wouldn’t be possible. We look forward to delivering a wide range of affordable events next year to make 2018 our best year yet!

Brett Bailey
One of the great benefits of growing up in Perth in the 50s and 60s was the time families spent taking advantage of living relatively close to the ocean and the Swan River and the activities in, on and around the water. Brett’s dad Bill and his grandfather Joe had been members of Claremont Yacht Club in their younger days and when Brett was about eight years old, his dad decided to get a boat that could be used for fishing but also be rigged up to sail. So a diagonal planked maple boat was built by a shipwright in South Perth. In the sailing configuration, the boat was a centreboard dinghy with bowsprit, jib and main. This was Brett’s introduction to sailing and, with his dad, sailed on the river but predominantly on the ocean at Quinns Rocks; not in any formal sailing, just learning and enjoying being on the water. Later, Brett in his early 20s, decided to get more involved in sailing and purchased what was popular at the time - a Red Witch trailer-sailer – a small keelboat about 6 metres long – joined Perth Flying Squadron and raced there for many years, at one time filling the role of Rear Commodore of Pens & Moorings. Then along came a girlfriend who also enjoyed sailing! She had a surf-cat and sailing became a shared interest racing on the Red Witch and taking the surf-cat out for fun on the ocean at Quinns Rocks. Quinns Rocks gets mentioned again because it is where the once girlfriend whose name was Lynda and Brett lived after they were married. The Red Witch was sold to become the deposit on a block of land where Brett and Lynda built a house and still live now. Boating was always around and with a young family of two girls Brett thought it time to get sailing back on the agenda and a Corsair dinghy was purchased – these were popular in the 70s and could accommodate a family of four. They were great to sail, unless you capsize, and so the daughters decided this was not their kind of boating. However all was not lost and one day the youngest, Hannah, asked if she could learn to sail. The family arrived
at HYC for a “learn to sail” course with both Hannah and older sister Rachel spending a great week on the ocean learning to sail. The family never left and have been part of Hillarys Yacht Club ever since. Brett and Lynda became involved with the Dinghy Division as volunteers on and off the water and serving on Committee. Brett was Dinghy Captain for three years, then served two years as Rear Commodore Sailing and is currently one of two Vice Commodores. A few years ago, at 62, Brett had a run in with cancer and Lynda had heart bypass surgery. These events clarified their thinking and decided life was too short, there was more fun to be had and so Sensei, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 37 was purchased. Although it is a cruiser, the Baileys and their crew enjoy racing the boat as often as possible. Brett says sailing is one of the best sports for a family and he is thankful his dad got him started all those years ago. With Lynda being keen and enjoying the experience of sailing on a bigger boat and the two daughters also being members at HYC in their own right, life for the Baileys is just fantastic.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Currently the Club is involved in a large number of training activities from school-based to members and to the general public. Our school programs are gaining in popularity and during the past three months we have conducted school courses in power boating, learning to sail and the operation of a marine radio. The Tackers day at the Hillarys Marina on September 3 was an enormous success. 12 of the club instructors and assistants were in the water from 9am-1pm, giving over 300 6-12 year olds a fun sailing experience. The day resulted in sold-out school holiday courses throughout October, full of those youngsters learning to sail. Of course, our programs are not limited to teaching children, there are many courses designed to introduce teenagers and adults to sailing on dinghies and keel boats, safely operate a power boat and much more! If you are interested in developing your skills, please enrol through our website.
Opening Day 2017 The weather prior to the opening ceremony kept us busy second guessing whether the rain would hold off to allow all of our Members and guests the opportunity to participate in the speeches without having to move inside. We were lucky, and in warm sunshine, enjoyed the day’s activities. The sail past was extremely well supported with dinghies, over 40 yachts and 10 powerboats putting on a great show.

Discover Sailing Day Our Club participated in this National activity again with nearly 400 guests attending the club on a Sunday morning - our biggest Discover Sailing Day to date! As it always is, Discover Sailing Day is a huge effort by a large number of Club Members that volunteer their time teaching and patiently coaching new sailors, all in the name of making an enjoyable experience. Thank you also to those many volunteers who coordinated registrations and boat logistics - the day just isn’t possible without you.
Clipper Race Inter Yacht Club Regatta The Clippers are coming! The fleet was due into Fremantle on November 21st after being delayed by 4 days with headwinds. HYC was invited to participate in the Inter Club Regatta from Fremantle on the 28th. Those selected to crew the boat from the Members’ Restaurant draw were John Bird, Sue Carter, Rob Franke, Todd Giraudo, Chris Hilton, Chris Kelly, Alex Lennox, Warren Linnel, Anthony Mee, Gemma Nicholson, Sue Osborne and Roric Smith. Roric Smith kindly offered his boat, Surfer Rosa, for a training sail before the event, as well as sponsoring the team t-shirts, for which we are extremely grateful. Chris Kelly

DIVE Dive section assists volunteers in sail mark refurbishment. The dive section was approached by Chris Kelly with a request for assistance in the annual lifting of the keelboat sail marks for refurbishment. In years past, the process for lifting the marks involved Balaton Jack coming alongside the mark, then on board crew would capture the mark, tie it to the gunwale of the boat, then the crew would skull drag the anchor and chain aboard. The problem here of course is that the crew generally consists of volunteers who are in the latter part of their years and lower lumbar strains would be a very real possibility. Chris Kelly and David Swain came up with a cunning plan which involved the assistance of the dive section. David had manufactured a crane device similar to that which the dive crew use when lifting lost springer weights from vessels berthed in the HYC marina. This crane would be positioned alongside the port side entry gate amidships of Balaton Jack and secured in place. The question was “How to attach the lifting hook onto the anchor?” This is where the dive section happily agreed to help. A risk analysis meeting was called as the major concern was having a diver in the water whilst Balaton Jack was operating live above. The answer resolved into dive providing an experienced diver to be on board acting as a spotter, and who would be in constant communication with the skipper. John Gregory offered his services to be the spotter, I was to be the diver and Chris Kelly was to be the skipper. We all agreed that once the floating mark was secured to the boat, Chris would engage neutral, signal to John Gregory and I would enter the water. The crane hook was then passed to me and I would submerge with the crane hook and attach it to the mark’s anchor. Three tugs on the lift line would signal to the crew on board to engage the winch and retrieve the chain and anchor.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm Once I had surfaced and had come back on board, John Gregory [spotter] would signal to Chris Kelly [skipper] that it was safe to engage gears. This strategy worked perfectly. My observation, once I had attached the hook to the anchor, was that some of the anchors, over the efflux of time and with wave action etc, had sunk themselves into the sand sometimes to well over 300mm. It would have required a lot of physical effort to drag the chain and anchor up from the sand, only using muscle power and so the risk of soft tissue injuries, was very high. All marks were recovered safely and the operation was considered a success. James Leesue, Rear Commodore Dive Section

Shoreline Yacht Club (Longbeach) Burgee Exchange As a regular visitor to Long Beach, I decided to drop into the Shoreline Yacht Club of Long Beach to say hi. I was warmly welcomed and invited to return and have done so several times. The club is about 1/3 the size of HYC and depends heavily on volunteers such as Rear Commodore Einar Lorentzen (pictured) to function. The outlook is over Queensway Bay to the Pacific Ocean. In the background is the Queen Mary and the dome that once housed Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose". The islands (disguised oil platforms) visible from
the club balcony are known as the Thums or Astronaut Islands in honour of four NASA Astronauts that perished on active duty: Ted Freeman, Gus Grissom, Edward White ll and Roger Chaffee. Behind is the Wyland Whaling Wall on the Long Beach Convention Centre. The bar is filled with memorabilia and boasts bottomless champagne breakfasts and seriously dangerous happy hours. $10 buys you eggs benedict that is top restaurant quality. It is a very welcoming club and I am planning to return at every opportunity. ď Ž Brian Meade, Dive Captain L to R. Brian Meade (Dive Captain HYC), Jane Baroni and Einar Lorentzen (Rear Commodore SYC).

DINGHY Our Winter Series was very successful, with the final day’s excellent weather providing enjoyable sailing for everyone. That success helped provide a great response to training days and other activities that followed. In September we again took part with the Keel Division in the Bart’s Bash event, which is the world’s largest sailing event, and it was again well supported and enjoyed by all. In late September, some of our Optimist and Laser sailors took part in the annual WestSail training camp for junior sailors at Rockingham. Also during the school holidays many of our sailors helped as instructors for various levels of learn-to-sail courses at HYC, which has resulted in more sailors and families joining our activities each week. The HYC Opening Day was very successful for Dinghies with suitable weather for everyone to sail and the combined presentations afterwards with the Keelboat sailors was well received by everyone. Our Summer Series race days which are held on Saturday mornings, has had suitable weather every week to provide a good start to our summer activities. These days have included training activities for children
UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7.00pm and adults to provide them with the skills to eventually join in the racing activities. There has also been training and practice activities on Saturdays when it hasn’t been a race day due to regattas at other Clubs. Thursday afternoon training is also a popular activity. Coaching for all sailors is our ongoing focus, to ensure everyone can develop their sailing skills while enjoying the experience. These are some of the activities that Dinghy sailors, families and supporters can be involved with in the next few months: The Saturday morning race days and training, the Christmas Family Fun Day & BBQ, the Australia Day sailing & BBQ, plus the fun and relaxed format of the Cow Rock race in February. We wish the best of luck to all of our Dinghy sailors who will be taking part in their Class’ Australian Championships in the eastern states during the Christmas & New Year period, and look forward to hearing about their experiences. KEELBOAT RACING
UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm
Opening Day Delight Mayor Troy Pickard declared the season for 201718 of Hillarys Yacht Club open with the firing of the cannon on Sunday, October 8th. A festive atmosphere of colourful decorations, children’s activities, music and ceremony set the scene for a sail-past of dinghies, yachts and power craft dressed in the theme of “sea creatures”. A highlight was the departure of Kraken. The crowd watched on, in awe, as Todd Giraudo and David (Dubbo) White set off in their Sunfast 3600 yacht Kraken, bound for Melbourne where they will compete in the Melbourne to Osaka (Japan) race next March. Crew and family members were almost as adventurous with their sea creature costumes which featured sharks, octopi, colourful fish, alluring mermaids and even a lobster perched half way up the mast. Best dressed yacht in the sail-past was shared between Zinfandel and Sandrine. In the Commodore’s Cup Hard Evidence was first in division one with Covert Operation and Pandora successful in divisions two and three.
Bart’s Bash Bonanza Joining sailors at 596 venues in 80 countries and numbering close to four thousand sailors, once again HYC competed in Bart’s Bash, the largest global simultaneous yacht race. The Australian contingent of sailors numbered third behind the UK and South Africa and Hillarys Yacht Club was a significant contributor. In contrast to the winter
races, brilliant sunshine and a ten knot westerly was ideal for the combined start of keelboats and various classes of dinghies. As a gesture chocolates and pennants were handed out to winners Lamotrek, Helga and Sana II in divisions one to three respectively.
Discover Sailing Day Success Blessed with a perfect sunny morning and a light breeze, twenty two keelboats made an average of four trips each to cater for three hundred and fifty children and adults whilst over one hundred new sailors tried their hands sailing the smaller dinghies. Many thanks to all the crews, staff and volunteers who made Discover Sailing Day our biggest and brightest yet.
North Coast Series Underway In season 2016-17 Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club took the North Coast Series trophy from the grip of Hillarys Yacht Club where it had been held for three years. In the first of five day’s racing spread over the new season, HYC struck the first blow in a tight contest. Deckchairs Overboard was first and fastest in race one for HYC in division one whilst Covert Operation did likewise in race two of division two. Ocean Reef SSC performed strongly in division two with Feelin Free and Panache picking up pennants in both races, however the overall depth of the HYC team in both divisions prevailed on the day for a narrow win. Fremantle and Return Races The owners of Seachange (Hugh Burton, Darren Shirdon, Cass Castalanelli & John Gregory) were thrilled with their back to back division one wins in the Hillarys to Fremantle and return races. In division two Blue Chip was first and fastest on the trip to Fremantle, upstaging Covert Operation who set fastest time on the return journey which was won by Tropical Itch. Sensei and Comfortably Numb each had a win and a fastest time in division three. Many thanks to Clem Rogers for hosting us at the RPYC Annex in Fremantle and to Greg Shakeshaft for entertaining everyone with a challenging nautical quiz: now we know the difference between a yawl, a ketch and a schooner (you can’t drink two of them).

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm Dec 14-16 Stark Bay Cruise Jan 26-28 Rockingham Cruise Feb 17-18 Cockburn Sound Cruise Mar 3-5 Rockingham Cruise
Finally the 2017/2018 Cruising in Company Season has started after a winter which carried on well into springtime. This wild weather caused us to cancel our September cruise to Thompsons Bay which had been changed from Stark Bay. The CiC had yachts and members participating in Bart’s Bash, the Pre-Season Cocktail Party, the Opening Day Sail Past, the Commodore’s Cup; the Cruiser Cup Race 1 and Discover Sailing Day. The Longreach Bay Cruise, November 4th & 5th had seven yachts participating. The weather was perfect over the weekend for sailing, swimming, kayaking and more! At 4.30 on Saturday afternoon, the social part of the cruise kicked off with a fun filled contest of beach bocce. This was followed by fine dining at Geordie Bay Café. On Sunday morning we enjoyed a coffee and breakfast again at the same café, before departing on our sail back to Hillarys.

A nice 6kg Snapper was caught by Ancient Mariners Team however as this is a species competition the biggest fish or largest bag weight doesn’t always win the competition. A big thank you to HYC’s General Manager, Danny Rechichi, for sponsoring the prizes for Team Fish.

Junior Fishing Clinic
September Beach Competition This was the last of the four beach competitions for the year and the weather was blowy and wet, however the competition still went ahead and there were four men and three ladies competing with very few fish caught. There was no winner in the men’s section as not one of the four men were able to submit a fish of size. The ladies managed to catch one fish each and the winner with the heaviest fish was Michele Campbell with a 0.207kg Tarwhine and Ruby McGrady second with a 0.06kg Herring and, thirdly, Judy Thornton with a 0.74kg Whiting. As this was the last Beach competition for the year all the points from the previous three competitions were added together for the overall Beach winners announced on the Annual Angling Presentation night.
Once again HYC hosted a very successful Junior Fishing Clinic in the September School Holidays with 22 children participating. The three-day course teaches kids how to cast, tie knots, use tackle/fishing gear and two days of the clinic is dedicated to fishing on the club boats - the first day on the boat is how to fish and the second day is a species fishing competition with lots of prizes and a BBQ. Beau Bennison was the overall winner with 4 species, total points 45.42/bag weight 0.71kg. Beau also had the biggest Flat Head. Ethan Corley came second with 3 species, 35.34 points/ bag weight 0.67kg and third was David Le Roux with 3 species, 35,15 points/bag weight 0.57kg. All the kids had a great time and are looking forward to the next Fishing Clinic in the school holidays. Thank you to HYC’s Mel Harvey and all the volunteers.
September Boat Competition The September competition went ahead despite strong winds forecast and surprisingly some very good fish were caught, 15 men, two ladies and three juniors took part. Frank Pierucci missed a few competitions and came back from holidays to take out first place with 6 species, 71.01 points/ bag weight 2.00kg. Jake Speed, Frank’s regular deckie, was second place with 5 species, 59.82 28 Compass December 2017 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

Fish of the competition was a Queen Snapper 4.62kg, caught by Murray Westlund.
Beach Competition November The November Beach competition is the first of the four competitions for the year where all HYC members can fish from the beach with similar rules/ species as the boats. The points are accumulated at the end of the year with the eventful winner being awarded prizes and a trophy. The November Beach competition’s weather was wild and only six competitors ventured to fish the blustering winds, swell and heat. With only two fish being weighed in, the winner of the men’s was Ron Thornton and the ladies Ruby McGrady, with nice prizes donated by Danny Rechichi.
Recfishwest Grant
October Fishing Competition The Weather Gods were really kind for the October Competition - the start of the new annual fishing competitions - and the day was one of the best days on the ocean for a long time. There were 16 men, 1 lady and 1 junior fishing with some excellent fish caught. Being the last day before the Demersal ban for Snapper and Dhu fish, these fish were targeted by anglers with the great conditions and three nice Snapper were caught along with Black Sea Cod. Murray Westlund caught a very nice Queen Snapper weighing 4.6kg, which is a bit of a rarity these days, and Mick Elliot picked up a nice Snapper on his first HYC Angling Competition.
www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au
HYC Angling section were successful in applying for a $550 grant from Recfishwest which was to be used to purchase new life jackets. The Angling section voted to match Recfishwest’s grant and purchased 10 mens and 10 junior life jackets. A big thank you goes to Recfishwest and we look forward to securing further grants in the future. Anglers with the new life jackets on a recent fishing trip

Berthing your boat When checking your boat and especially during bad weather, look for: • Worn eyebolts and missing nuts • Missing weights • Worn mooring shackles • Worn thimbles • Frayed/broken ropes • Excessive movement/surging • Vessel trim/ listing • Bird nests • Power cord is clear of water • Loose covers/clears • Sails flapping/unfurling.
Recommended rope sizes using Silver Rope. Vessel Size 20-30 ft or 6 -10m 30-40 ft or 10-12m 40-50 ft or 12-15m 50+ ft or 15m+
Rope 20mm 22mm 24mm 28mm
Where possible stern ropes should be crossed as shown, if the boat configuration makes that impracticable, short ropes can be adjusted to allow for tidal variations. Pen Holders should consult Jetty Reps if in doubt. On floating jetties, the same number of ropes are recommended, taken directly to the cleats and thimbled eyes to chains/sliders. In Club rental pens, the Pen holder is responsible for the mooring lines, thimbles and shackles attaching the ropes to the chains, HYC is responsible for the weight, chain, securing shackles and eyebolts. In leased pens, the owner is responsible for the ropes, thimbles, shackles, weights, chains, and shackles, whilst HYC is responsible for the eyebolts. Maintenance concerns should be reported to the Moorings Officer or Reception on a Pen Maintenance Report Slip.

POWER As the weather has not been suitable for boating we have been busy in our section with other events. The September wine tour was a great day and with a full bus we headed out to the Swan Valley. We visited five small boutique wineries who looked after us very well and a lot of tasting was done with cheese and biscuits on offer to soak up the alcohol. The final stop of the day was at Conti’s Winery and Restaurant where they welcomed us with a predinner drink and a sumptuous meal to follow. Many thanks to Graham for providing the entertainment with song books, percussion instruments and music to sing along to and a game “the wheels on the bus”, a great time was had by all. Also many thanks to Jim for driving the bus once again and getting us around safely.

October “Discover HYC Month” Due to bad weather the planned Twilight Cruise had to be cancelled. This was very disappointing as approximately 90 people were interested in going.
Melbourne Cup The Power Section once again ran this year’s Melbourne Cup Day Raffle and congratulations go to the winners: Kerry McDonald, Carol Sampson and Sharron Blatch.
Pirate Raid Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club turned up by boat, raided HYC and took the treasure chest that HYC raided from the Claremont Yacht Club in 2016. We had a great turn out for the evening’s festivities with 27 members from PFSYC and 84 HYC members made up of all sections within the club. It was good to see most dressed up in their pirate gear. After a very good buffet enjoyed by all, the music started and it was party time with great music and lots of dancing. Good to see that most HYC members held up their end and kept partying until the music finished. Many thanks to HYC’s Kylee and Carlie for their efforts.
October Opening Day was well attended with a lot of boats in the Sail Past. Congratulations to Bill and Michelle Barclay and their crew for taking out the best dressed power boat for the second time in a row.
